Do you want to tell us about it? Well, we just finished watching American Mary. It's a Canadian horror movie, directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska, the Soska Twins of Twisted Twin Productions, and stars one of my favorites, Catherine Isabel. From Ginger Snaps fame? Mm-hmm. And she plays Mary Mason, the character Mary Mason,

who is a surgical student, who is having some financial issues, yeah. And a robot, as far as I could tell of her. Yeah, she, yeah, her emotions are kind of, I don't... th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi, thi, twin. thi, thi, twin. twin. twin, twin, t. t. t. t far as I could tell. Yeah, yeah, her emotions are kind of, I don't know. She's very deadpan. Mm-hmm. Well, in the beginning she wasn't, like, she was pretty robotic from the beginning.

Well, she just got like, you know, just thrown into that hole. Well, even when she was in class, the first day she was just kind of like, theirs, there's there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to thi, thi, to thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to to thi, to to to to to to to to to to to to to thi, thii, thi-a. thi, thi, thi, thi, of like, there's hebo globulin, blah, blah, blah. It seems like she's trying to live up to expectations of, like, her professors or the other surgeons. And that one, Dr. Grant, he's a real asshole. Dr. Grant is one of her professors who, you're right, it's like a complete dildo. And he keeps telling her how surgeons don't have the luxury to be sorry, and surgeons never mess up. And he apparently had just learned the word fuck because he used in every sentence.

He's edgy. That was really annoying. Yeah, it was weird. I guess you're just supposed to be like this, this man is like 100% dildo. He's pretty flat character otherwise. I have a note that he was edited in from like an Italian horror film from the 80s, because it seemed like he wasn't delivering

his dialogue in English and somebody was just ADR and that shit in later. I wouldn't have believed it. And he just gazed. He just sort of, he had that like, Freddy Prince Jr. and I know what you did last summer, just gazing into the ether, you know? Acting. Yeah. So, To one was just telling us right before we started recording that, the twins who directed this movie, their parents took- Yeah, they took out of extra status in the movie.

And the twins also appear in the movie. Yeah, they're the demonic Germans. German? Questionably German? Those accents were fantastic. They sounded like extra from Indiana Jones. I kept thinking they were the nihilists from the Fuglowski. We believed the accents. They weren't even doing the same accent, I didn't think. So from different parts of Germany.

So basically the movie is, Mary finds herself sort of thrown into this world doing extreme body modification surgery. She starts doing it as a way to make money, but then starts doing it as basically revenge after the most disturbing scene in this movie. Yeah, trigger warning. Yeah, it seemed, it was disturbing to a degree that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that in this movie. Trigger warning. Yeah, it seemed it was disturbing to a degree that like it felt like it was in a different film. Like it seemed like the tone was totally different than before or after. Like.

It, I was worried about the gore in this movie because I get the oogie boogies. But the gore was like pretty... Is the technical term for the Gore was like pretty... Is that the technical term for them? That's the surgical term. It's Oogie Bookies. The Gore like wasn't very stressful, but this rape scene where Dr. Grant rapes, drugs and rapes Mary is like so long and so upset it. Yeah.

Well, yeah, and like she wakes up and he's like sleeping in bed next to her. Yeah. They, well yeah, and like she wakes up and he's like sleeping in bed next to her. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. That's the whole, well the whole thing, because she made mention of it when she's working on him, getting her revenge, that she thinks that they thought she got into prostitution because there were other women there that were, you know, the one, the thrown. fucking mother fucker yeah and then she was basically drugged at the time when we see the woman laying on the counter, you know, with a nice circle jerk going on. Yeah. It was really upsetting. Is that what surgeons do? I think so. I think that's what you do when you have money. I know the doctors are dickens, but yeah. It was just like you just go to eyes wide shut parties and that's all their... Yeah, that was really, yeah, I just felt like it tonally was so much, so much different than the rest of the movie. Like, yeah.

Yeah, I can't watch people get the eyes. Oh, so brutal. I have a note that just says Tobin. How good you do this to us? But there are, I mean, the rest of the movie is like kind of funny, I would say. There's a lot of funny moments. There's some really good, I'm surprised how good the movie was overall. Yeah. I had, unfortunately, I had very low expectations coming into this. Because it was made because of when it was made because of the one it was made. It's Canadians no one's trust me. No, because I don't know. Yeah, because it was made after 1986. I don't trust anything made after 1986. I know. And it was on Netflix, which you generally mistrust. If you're not

I was also pretty drunk the first time I watched this movie. And I definitely like when when it like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like over just kind of like fist bumped in the air

There were really good comedic parts. There were like what's the the main actresses name again Catherine Isabel yes, she was great Two first names don't trust any like she was great in the gender snaps movies too, but like this like she she had like a weird like? She was like a weird like Laura Palmer quality to her. It also like a weird like fran. So he's, he's some kind of like low rent gangster and they've roughed some guy up and Mary comes in to initially answering like a Craigslist ad to be a stripper or a masseuse or something. Or like some kind of entertainer at a gentleman's club. She wasn't actually supposed to strip or anything. It was like... She hands the guy her resume for this Craigslist ad, which which was funny. That was funny. Would have been totally appropriate. I know, I'm still a little bit weirded out like she's kind of in like financial trouble needs the job, but she is so reluctant to do like you know she's so reluctantly sexy in that scene where you know she has to like you know take off her jacket show off the stuff you know the stuff I think that's reasonable that's fair that works and when she's like walking around she's kind of like you you know, very, what is it? What is it called?

Oh, I thought the thing with a camera was she wouldn't, she wanted him to see that she could do it and stopped. Oh, I to this

lady. So she was just kind of, that's what I got out of it. But yeah, maybe it could work on both levels, yeah. I just thought she was a nut bar. But she also, at no point prior to this had established that she had any interest in Billy like no and then like am the guy comes as soon he sees me I really like that yeah I felt like I felt like she should have more self-esteem than that yeah we also sort of figure it's like I mean she she was she was raped so it's like you know she's very emotially aloof yeah

and kind of closed off after afterthat particular scene, of course. Yeah. Yeah, it's weird because when they were sitting at the bar talking about Los Angeles, it almost in a way felt like a first date. Yeah, it's super weird. And she was very cold, very like stoic in the scene. Yeah, like he was trying to reset their relationship. Let's just start this over again.
