Yes, with Christopher Walken. Oh man. I think I saw that once and was like, what is this? He's great. There's a sad story, I don't know what it is. There's some sad story about why Brendan Fraser can't get work. Oh, real Brendan Frazier? Yes. Oh, I don't know. Eech. I thought it was because he was balding and like really self-conscious about it.

Oh, yeah. There's a lot you can do about that, isn't it? I mean, John Travolta has made a career out of it for years. Hey, there's another voice here. We have a friend here. Our friend Chris is here. Hi Chris. Hey. What did you bring us? We're doing 1932's Universal Movies, The Mummy, which is one of the classic, slightly pre-code, the Hayes production code comes in in 1934, but not really a racy movie, but, you know, it has some good stuff. One of the classic universal horror movies that I think is a little underrated. People talk about Dracula. This is the same plot, but kind of better, I think.

And then you have Frankenstein, Invisible Man by James Well, which I think are maybe the three best, but I feel like the mummies, the underrated one. It's really cool. It's different th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th than the reboot mummy movies from the 30s and 40s and the Hammer mummy movies and that the mummy's a sorcerer. He's not like a dude and bandages who just chokes people. He's like a guy who's got a scrying pull and like cast spells and uses mind control. And so this is my favorite mummy movie because it's the only one where the villain's kind of a sorcerer. But it's also the least mummy out of mummy out of any mummy movie. It is. There's the least amount of mummy in a mummy in a mummy. That's true. I mean he's a mummy the whole movie though. Yeah, he's

a mummy inside. He's only bandaged for the first 10 minutes. And he walks away which is a great seeing because they don't even show it's like, oh the mummy just walked away. I like that scene. There's a lot of Egypt. There's a lot of statues and tombs. They were like this is in Egypt. You guys this is Egypt. It's Egypt. This isn't going to be Egypt. Yes. There's the scene on the roof of the there's like a rooftop party where Zeta Johnson who plays Helen Grovesner but they don't say the yes do they? They say it. Grobner? Grosner. British. She'll turn one direction and they, they say it, Grobner, Grobner, Grosner, but she'll turn one direction and they'll show the pyramids. And then she'll turn the other direction,

it's like, ah, modern Cairo. It's like a good use of stock footage to be like, this is so Egypt, but there's two Egypt, but there's two in a lot of things from that time So the remakes like that was Christopher Lee was like the four was that when was that one? Yeah, they were the other? Yeah, they were all those other like? the the Cushing Lee, I think that was in the 40s that were all sequel of the first which is kind of a reboot. Yeah, there's other universal mummies in the 40s that are all sequel of the first, which is kind of a reboot, where the mummy is just like a shambling monster that chokes people. I like this one because it's Boris Karloff, you see his face. He's a well-developed kind of like creepy.

He is. He wants to kill somebody and mummify them and bring them back to life because because because because because because because he like it's basically the same plot as Dracula kind of, but like creepy and you know, I don't know. So there's like this thing and I believe that like, you know, there's the Tarantino thing from Pulp Fiction where you're an Elvis person or a Beatles person. I think there's the you're a Lagos person. And I always thought I was a Lagosi person because I saw Ed Wood. I'm like, oh, what a charming story or whatever. And but I don't know, I just think Carloff is creepier in the same similar type of role as Dracula here is like the obsessive male evil monster dude.

Like I think he does it better. He's like stares at Zeta Johnson for like 10 minutes in that one scene. It's. It's. It's. It's. I'm gonna intimidate you. Yeah. This is the movie that really sent home the idea that the real monster is that they're all sex pests. They're all like just like being grossed the ladies the whole time. I mean, he dressed th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th is th is th is thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's the they's they's they's thi, they time. I mean, did he dress her in that tiny bikini thing? For sure. Yes. She put that wig on her. And she wasn't like, why do I have this wig on?

Or his slave, basically. Yeah. Yeah. Ah, it's a fucking slave. His newbieen? The newbieen, noble yeah. He plays the Cossack in that. He managed to like racially cross over between like Central Asian, South Russian roles and black roles and he's the Nubian in this movie. Okay.

But he and Boris Karloff seemed like they're about the same size, whatever. Yeah, it is like six five or something. Big dudes. The's weird. This movie is weird in that it opens with the Swan Lake song. As says Dracula. Does it? I miss that. Pretty weird. Yeah, that is weird. Also weird, we're closer, we're further away from the mummy than Swan Lake was to the mummy

now. That's all, it's like this movie's going to be like a hundred years old soon or something. Like that's crazy, not literally, but these movies are getting really old. Yeah. Yeah. We've been seeing a lot of garbage lately, so it's very nice to see something that stands the test of time. Although the pacing is very, very bad and it just ends and I was like, what? I feel like that was just a thing in movies at the time. Like, well, we've read the idea. Story is over.

Also, the poster I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I the poster for this movie is fucking amazing. Yes. It's so gorgeous. Also, whenever I think of Carloff, I just think of Tom Sabini's vanity license plate. You know what it says? I don't know. Carloff. Pretty good.

Pride of Minusin again. So it starts with the, what's now, I think, I don't know if it existed before then, the common trope that people were just bad. Right. I mean, foreign museums,, I saw the mummies and they were rad. I played my four role-playing games in there and I've never been there. It's crazy how much shit the British stole from everybody. Yeah.

Just, just a whole like, we'll just take that building. The Rosetta Stone was there, I don't know if it lives there, but it just like pressing themselves into the glass. It was, I mean... It's so weird. Yeah, the mummies there are pretty dope. Yeah, oh yeah for sure. I've been looking at the same Pittsburgh mummy for so many years and the mummy cat and the mummy babies. So then I have the note, the young guy opens the box and there's a scroll to which I have the note, dude, get a magic user or a cleric if you're going to pull

that scroll out. They'll know what to do with it. He can't use that. He can't use it. No, it just gives him laughies. He gets real laffy. He dies laughing, allegedly in a straight jacket. That was a pretty cool death, I thought. Yeah. It's depressing. Tara didn't like it because she thought it it ruined the great scene of the mummy running off that the guy just kept laughing. But I thought it was a good death.

And the movie has. The invisible man wins because he threw a fucking train off of cliff. No reason. That's true. They're including total number of incidents versus total number of bodies. He's such a dick. I love him. I love the mummy is like, I love him. I'm mad. Nah. I'm mad. Why are you so mad? Why are you so mad? Why are you so mad? Why are you? He's just like, no, I guess I'm just gonna go do the stuff. You gotta go. He looks good though, like the bandages like old and crispy and gross. And it's even in like, you know, black and white, no effects. You know, it looks great. And I love his hand. Like how wrinkly and dusty it is.

Yeah. Also giant, yeah. . Did the the same. Do they keep reusing the same shot of his face? Or were those different? I couldn't tell. Where they would just show his intense wrinkled face and look like a black.

I'm going to assume they were the same shot. Yeah, yeah. It was good. And then they kept going to it. like lighting stuff. He was a German expressionist guy who did Metropolis. He was a cinematographer for first slang in Metropolis and he was a cinematographer in Dracula. He was basically the de facto director of Dracula's the story. And then he was the first person to do shots where the cameras are disconnected from just like being on a tripod. He would walk around with him in his stomach, he'd put them on cranes. And yeah, especially when going from film to television was such a step down at that point in time. It was like such a gush thing to do. And all the shots are gorgeous in this movie, even if it is dragon in 72 minutes. Like, this is the kind of person he needed a union because he sucked. Yeah. And he couldn't get fired or something. I thought this guy was awful. He was like self-interest. Well, also his character blew. This character was just like, oh shit, are you a lady?

I love you. He even says something like, now that you've asked me for help, I'm never going to leave you alone. What? Right set up, buddy. Shacks out. He also does not care that his dad's dead because he's going to fucking bone down. He's like, no sadness about his dad father at all. He's just like, I love you. I thought what

could have been, despite it being abrupt, a great last scene was somewhat ruined by him than having to like bring Zita out of her like unconsciousness or whatever. Like that was clearly, oh we need the dude to do something here, but it was better. She just like called to ISIS and like, is that right? that sounds weird saying it these days right? when you call the the the the the the the the the the the the th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th. th. th. th. And then he would, then he has to like, pull her out of her back. Lucky Helen. So is she a reincarnation of the, um, of on? She has, she has the bloodline. Okay. I think is all it is, but like, spiritually. No, because in the flashback, it's her. She looked, didn't have another actor.

Well, yeah, I think it's that whole thing of like, yeah, when reincarnation just meant you looked exactly like the person. Yeah. He like, I have a collection of his supernatural stories, which are very, very bad. But all he wanted was to do other stuff and everybody was like, no, you're going to do the guy with the hat. You're gonna make the stories about the detective. And he's that that that that tho about the detective. That's what they said to him.

And he was focused on that kind of mystical, like, uh... The stuff that Houdini was trying to disprove. Didn't they have some big beef? Yeah, he hated Houdini. Hi, I'm Hugh Dini. Hi, I'm Houdini. That's right. And it said, this is the scroll of toth, which is the name. Scroll of toft is the name of the Tarrarother Conan Doyle story. Because it was originally based on... Because there's the Brom Stoker mummy story that's also I think not very good. Yeah, something seal or something with a boat. I read it once. It wasn't good. Okay. Yeah. Don't go read it. Specifically do not. But yeah, they wanted something that was basically similar to Dracula to do for this movie, so they needed another sex pest from a foreign land. I do wonder if post, I'm not an expert on this stuff, but once the, you know, the code era begins a few

years after this movie, could they've gotten away with so much non-Christian mysticism? Because basically all the Egyptian magic and the movie kind of works, you know? Yeah. And it basically comes at it from an ancient Egyptian magical perspective and they never kind of to, unless I'm forgetting something, a Judeo-Christian argument against it or something. No, yeah.
