Episode Date: March 23, 2015

Continuing our recent run of 1980s horror films, this week we're discussing the 1985 vampire-next-door classic "Fright Night." In this episode, we discover a few surprising things about ourselves such... as Katie's massive crush on Prince Humperdink and Allen's revelation that he probably isn't Charley Brewster. We also discuss important topics like Marcy Darcy, film theory that involves "Monster Squad" and of course, vampire weiners! As always, we love to hear your feedback! Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi and welcome to another episode of WhereWaf Ambulance. I'm Katie and I'm here with my friend Alan. Hey Alan. Hey Katie. How are you? Are you a ghost today? Katie, I'm a British ghost. Oh no, wrong movie. No, not Ghost Ship, not again. No! No, no, not ghost ship, not again. No. No, I am, I am not. I'm a swatheau. I'm a British ghost. Oh no, wrong movie. No, no, not ghost ship, not again. No. No, I am not. I'm a, I'm a suave vampire this time. Yes. I'm a sexy, sexy, swa vampire in a beautiful turtle neck. Oh, so many weird necklines in this movie. So many, some of these sweaters with leather patches. Yes, this is a really well-covumed movie. Maybe we should tell you what you we're talking about. Well, I'm, I assume the no swab vampire is Fright Night. Fright Night, 1985? Excellent. Wait, there's a, there's no other Frid Night, it's just 1985.
Starting point is 00:00:52 That's the one. Okay. No, no, Prince Humberding is Prince Humberding. We are going to do spoilers if this is the first episode you're listening to. So watch the movie if you care about that kind of stuff. If not, listen on. And you can probably guess how this one ends. It's true. It's true. It's a horror movie. No twist. No twists on this one. So Freight is about a teenage boy named Charlie Brewster who is basically just trying to get to the bone zone with Marcy from married his children. Yeah, as any respectable red-blooded 1985 teenage boy would be. Yeah, and he has a new neighbor move in next door to him that he comes to believe is a vampire. Right, well we should also mention that Charlie is a horror freak.
Starting point is 00:01:47 He loves, he loves the Gothic horror films. Yeah, and he's a big fan of a guy who plays a vampire killer a lot named Peter Vincent, Vincent, who is clearly like a mashup of, I don't know, like. Well his name is a mashup of Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Yeah. And he's also a nod to like all like all like all like all like all like all like all the the the the the the the the to like the to like the the to to he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he that that that that that that that that he's that that that he's a that he's that he's that he's that he's that he's that he's. He's. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He's th. He's th. He's th. He's th. He's th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a nod to like all the horror hosts of Yor with like Zachar Lee and and Chili Billy Cardilly, Pittsburgh Zone. Chilly Billy Cardellie. So he's a nod to that as well which I really adore.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Yeah, yeah, he's a great character. It's a great movie. It is. Really enjoyed it. All right, so we're following Charlie Brewster trying to make out with Marcy Darcy, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a thee, a to, a thee, a to, a to, a to, a th, a th, a tho, a the, a the, a the, a the, the, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, and a th, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a the, and a theanor, and a thea, too-augh, and a toa, toa, toa, toa, toa, toa, thea, thia, thea, thea, and a're following Charlie Brewster trying to make out with Marcy Darcy, aka Amanda Beers, aka Amy. Although in my notes I refer to her only as Marcy. And you know he's a horror freak and he's watching, while he's making out with this girl on the pillows next to his bed, like total high school style. I loved it. I I really appreciated it. On the TV is Peter Vincent introducing bed, like total high school style. I loved it. I really appreciated it. On the TV is Peter Vincent introducing a horror movie that he's starring in also, which I really thought was quite quite fun. Then Charlie notices that something's happening next
Starting point is 00:02:54 door and they're moving a coffin into the basement next door. This really elaborate coffin is moved in. His girlfriend is ready to go to the aforementioned bone zone. Yeah. Charlie is now fixate in a the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. the th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the, the, the. the. Peter the. Peter the. Peter. Peter. Peter their their their, their, their, their. Peter. Peter. Peter. Peter. Peter the the the the the the the th. Peter the th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter th. Peter the, the, the, the. Peter the. the. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. t is ready to go to the aforementioned bone zone. Charlie is now fixated on this coffin. Which is a shame because a few minutes earlier he was pressuring the shit out of her. I have written here maybe she's not ready Charlie. And so Charlie actually ends up running out of the room to go tell his mom that a vampire is moving in next door. His poor poor beligured single mother. Sort of oblivious as well. Yeah, she's just trying to go to the bone zone too. It's true.
Starting point is 00:03:27 It doesn't matter with whom, just anyone. Causing his girlfriend to leave the house and, you know, setting up some turmoil in Charlie's life. The next night he's looking through the next door neighbor. Right. It sees him being Prince Humumberdank with a lady. A lady, a young lady. A young lady. Seemingly very young lady. Which comes up again later, which is upsetting.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And he's like, you know. They're mackin' there's some hot sacks going. There's a lot of closed eye rubbing. Yeah. And that's what I call it. And this is the first boobs that show up in the movie too. Because, you, you, you, you, you, you, because, because, Hum, the, th, th, th, th, th, th, a, a, a, a, a, a, a hum, a thum, a thum, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a thi, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi..aa.a.a. A thea. thi.a, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the first boobs that show up in the movie too. Because Humperdink, Jerry Dandridge, the vampire. Not a good name for a vampire.
Starting point is 00:04:10 It's a great name for a vampire. You know what's a better name? You know what's a better name? Chris Sarandoned is the actor playing. Yeah, he's so hunky, they. Oh, he's so hunky-a would not think of that guy as a hunky dude, but he's totally rockin' really well cast as a hunky dude. Yeah, he's standing behind a young lady.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I'm sorry. Is that a special kind of hunky? Yeah. Because you can be like a hunky bad guy. So is that this like the bad boy to the end-to-t of thing. Yes. I like it. Katie's into hunky evil dudes. Who isn't? Who? Name me a woman in their 30s, who isn't? He's steady behind her takes her shirt off, takes her bra off.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Her bra is doing nothing. It's like made of spiderwebs. I don't know what it's doing. This is a wish bra. And Charlie's watching this whole thing, as any self-respecting 17-year-old boy would be. With binoculars, decided it being about 15 yards away. And this is the first time you see Jerry Dandridge's fangs come out, as he's about to bite into the girl's neck. And he gets like long, gross fingernails too.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Well, I really like the subtlety of him changing to a vampire. Like, this is right around the time of the more dramatic changes of vampires, like the Lost Boys. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And stuff like that, you know, where they get the big brow ridges and all that stuff. And he does later on have a really dramatic change, but this is more subtle. Yeah, still hunky.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Yeah, sensual vampire. kills this woman. And then the next day after that he's coming home from school when... Oh we should mention that Jerry Dandridge notices Charlie staring at him and draws the blind so you don't actually see him bite the girl. Oh right, right, right. Right, so that so at this point we're still ambiguity. Yeah. He might just be like a gotthe guy he likes to wear fangs or something. Yeah, that seems legit. Yeah, that seems that that that that seems like that seems legit. Yeah, that seems legit. Yeah, that seems legit. that seems legit. that seems legit. that seems legit. th. that seems legit. that seems th. that seems that seems to th. th. th. that seems to to to to to to to to to the to that seems to to to to to to to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their their their to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to their. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. that seems seems seems seems seems seems to to to be to be to be to to be to th. th. to. th. th. th. to. th. th. th. the th. to. the to.igslist, there had to be something. So the next day, Charlie's getting him from school and he sees a woman getting out of a car being dropped off at his neighbor's house dressed very scantily, very high heels. Yeah, she's practically wearing a sandwich board that says prostitute. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:22 It was very, like very 80s prostitute. Yeah. At like 3.30 in the says prostitute. Yes. It was very like very 80s prostitute. Yeah. Yeah. At like 3.30 in the afternoon. Right. You know he gives this lady the up and down. Yeah. So the next day at school he's in like the hip cafeteria, like the Save by the Bell cafeteria with the TVs and everything. And there's a story on about a woman who's been murdered, and her body's been found and he recognizes it as that lady. And he th. And he's the th. And he's the th. And he's the th. And he's the the th. the th. the th. the the th. the the th. thi. thi. thi's thi. th. th. th. th. th. thi's thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the the the the the the the the the the thi the thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the thi thi that lady. Yeah, so he goes to the cops. Right. And the cops are like the worst fucking cops on the planet, this cop that he works with. I like the cop because he looks like it came out of a 70s cop TV show. Yeah, they were like we need a short black man and a trench coat. So the cop takes Charlie over to his next door neighbor's house and he says, this kid says, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. the cop. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. He's the the th. He's th. He's th. He's t. He's t. He's t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. the the t. t. takes Charlie over to his next door neighbor's house and he says this kid says you're a murderer which is not my friends how the criminal justice system works I mean you you were what 11 you have no idea how no you were one you're one
Starting point is 00:07:14 I was 11 you were one you have no idea what the criminal justice system was like 1980 this is Reagan era I guess I guess crazy. I guess. I guess. In this scene we also meet Prince Hopernick's helper, like, live-in dude guy. It's kind of like a butler but he just wears polo shirts. Named Billy Cole. Billy Cole, played by Jonathan Stark. Billy Cole.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Yeah, Billy Cole. And I like him because he wasn't, um because he wasn't a Renfield. He wasn't a super crazy whack job. He was just like, hey, what's going on? I'm a guy, the guy next door. Yeah. And I was doing a little reading about that and that's how Jonathan Stark got the role as he came in and he didn't play it crazy. He just played it like if you're going to be a a dude who's protecting a vampire. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's a th. He's like, he's a th. He's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a th. He's a thi. He's like, he's a thi. He's like, he's want to seem as normal as possible. Yeah. Just a regular dude with poofy, poofy, kushball hair. Yeah, a lot of tucked in shirts too. 1985, what are you going to do? Yeah, it's pretty sweet. So the cop seems to be taking Charlie's accusation seriously enough to go there, but then Charlie
Starting point is 00:08:17 freaks down and is like, their like, you get out of here, you wasted my time. This is what their voices sound like, just basically how I'm doing them now. Yeah, I think the coat tells him if he does this again, he'll put him in jail forever. Yeah, right, right, you can go to jail forever for that. I mean, it was the Reagan era, as we've discussed. Trickle down. to him about vampires and his friend is fucked up. Evil Ed, he's great. He is so weird. Stephen Jeffries, yeah, he's fantastic.
Starting point is 00:08:49 He rules and is the worst. He's everything. Well, watching this movie, I've seen this movie a ton of times. And every time I'm like, man, I really want to be Charlie Brewster, though. I don't think anybody's Charlie Brewster though, you know. I don't think anybody's Charlie Brewster though, you know? Yeah. I could pull off a tweed jacket with elbow pads. Yeah, because you're in your 40s.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Oh, that's right. And Evil Ed is just like a really skinny kid with like big spiky hair. And he's always talking like this! You're so cool, Brewster! So weird. He like, basically, you like can't have characters like him in movies in a post-Columbine era. Oh, jeez. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:09:30 I like him because he's like, he's every 80s nerd trope. Like he's obviously like got a little bit of a science thing going on because he's working, like he's working with electronics when Charlie comes in his room. Oh yeah. And, he's got a little rock and roll with his sleeveless black t-shirts yeah all that stuff he's just he's just a token dork I guess yeah yeah yeah yeah I appreciate the token dork and he tells Charlie that he need not worry because the vampire can't come into his house without being invited right so naturally Charlie's
Starting point is 00:10:02 desperate single mother totally invites him in. Because he's so fucking hunky, how she's supposed to not. And they're drinking bloody marries. I love that. And when he's in their house, he's whistling strangers in the night, which I also really loved. Yeah. He's just a swab fucking dude. Oh, he's so good. Oh, my god. I need to just watch all of his movies. This is getting weird for me. You just discovered you have a criss- surrounded fetish. I know it's so weird. He's just such a good, hot,
Starting point is 00:10:32 bad guy. There's just like, there's nothing else to do it. Yeah, for sure. Although later he gets a little weird. So he leaves and then comes back later. Right for the full-blown threat. Yeah. Really lay into Charlie, let him him tho that now he's the he he th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to to to to to th. to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. to to to thi. to to to to to thi. to to to to to toeee. to tooooooooooooooo. to to the. th the full-blown threat. Yeah. Really lay into Charlie, let him know that now he's been invited in. Hangs him out the window, basically, doesn't he? He slams him into the wall and like chokes him and knocks his pinball machine over. And Charlie's mom notices none of this damage to the home. No, she's got a eye cover on it. She also took some, oh God, what was the Xanax of the day? Valium? She got some Valium before she went to sleep.
Starting point is 00:11:08 This is when we see like the full transformation into Ukuki vampire, because Charlie stabs him in the hand with a pencil and like he wooden stakes him in the hand. Those were finger quotes you guys heard just then? Yeah. And that's when Chris ran and becomes just an ugly, heinous, Nosferatu, like... Still kind of hot though. Oh God. Just kidding, I guess. I guess. JK because I was called on it. Right, yep.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Mm-hmm. And then Charlie sees on TV this really well-timed spot for Peter Vincent's vampire hunting show. Right after Chris Saranen, like books because he's been wooded and staked. Yeah. Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie is like, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie is like, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, just tho, just tho, tho, tho, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. And thi. And thi, Charlie's like, oh, well, I'll go see this guy. Right. And at that point, I have on TV is obviously a vampire hunter. Yeah, right. At that point, I have in my notes,
Starting point is 00:11:51 how is this movie another hour and 15 minutes? Because this seems like it's getting to the climax. It is not. We haven't even gotten into the nitty nititit nit nit nit nit nit nit nit nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty n nitty n n n n n n n n n n nitty n nitty n n n n n nitty nitty n nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty nitty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty of of a to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the nitty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty gritty of a Roddy McDowell yet though. Yeah, this is a long movie. It is a really long movie. I mean I don't feel like it feels like a slog at any point but it is a long movie. Yeah, it could be chopped down by half an hour probably. Yeah, it could be chopped down by half an hour probably. So Charlie goes and he approaches Peter Vincent, Ronnie McDowell, and he's just, Ronnie McDowell in amazing old man hair, which is just like cake with flour.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Yeah, it's a powdered wig. It is literally a powdered wig. It's awesome. And you also see him like 20 years prior in the movie clips that they're playing. So he's like doing this really wide age range and stuff. I kind of watch his uh... Oh yeah, I'd watch the shit out of those movies. They had ridiculous names like they were like orgy of blood. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that sounds real actually. Yeah, the blood. It was on the, it was along those lines. Yeah, sure. So he goes in, he approaches Peter Vincent. And it just happens. It's on the exact Demented Madman, running around in Ski Masks,
Starting point is 00:13:05 Hacking Up Young Virgins, which I feel like should be the tagline for our podcast here. This is what Katie wants. Oh, come on. You love Dementin. I do. I do. I'm simple, I guess.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I prefer your subtler horror films, my NPR tones. So Peter Vincent kind of wants none of his bullshit. He's offering to sign an autograph, but then when Charlie's pressuring him to come hunt a vampire with him, he's not, he ain't having it. And then eventually Ed, Evil Ed and Marcy go back and pay him to help Charlie. Right after they see that Charlie's like totally lost the plot. Like he's c his room and garlic and crosses, and he's cutting wooden steaks, and he's just like, he's gone off the deep end. Yeah. Their idea is to help him by, you know, paying Peter Vincent a $500 bond, which made me so
Starting point is 00:13:56 sad. Yes, he made me so sad. It made me so sad. It's like, oh,, so sad. But then also, like, what if Marcy's on was like, well, you could use that bond you have? And she's like, oh, I gave it to a TV vampire hunter to have him prove that someone wasn't a vampire. That's, am I good? To help my handsy boyfriend.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Yeah, yeah. You know the one who's always grabbing at my tits? You're so cool, Brewster! We're also like 15 minutes into this movie like is going on forever. So they go and meet with Peter Binson, he agrees to do it. They set up a meeting with Jerry Dandridge to go the next night. Jerry Danders was like, oh, well now I'm going to get him in the house. Ho, hon, huh. And doesn't do anything with him. No, I didn't understand his excitement about that. Were you going to kill all of them? No. So they set it up so he's going to drink some holy water, but Dairy Dandruth. D'Andra's makes sure to point out that he's born again. So no, I'm actual told you're tap water. that. He's a man of God. Yeah, man of God. And he's he he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. And he's. they. th. they's they's they's they's said. they said. they said. they said. they said. they said. they said. they said. they said. they said. So. So. So he said. So he said he said he said he said he said he's. So he said. So he said. So he said. they he said. they. they's. they. they's. they's. they's they's. th. th. th. th. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He's. He. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He's said. He said. He said. He said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he said he's said he's th. He's th. He dick bag yeah and Charlie's like no he's still a vampire how could he do that and then Peter
Starting point is 00:15:07 Vincent's leaving and I guess he's gonna check his makeup because he pulls out of compact but the mirror and a cigarette case or something yeah and sees that Jerry Dandridge casts no reflection I was trying to help do you want to do that again nope okay you look lost you look lost well that's I'm sick th hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th I th I th I th I th I th I th th I thi th I th I'm th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th I th I th I th I th I thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi trying to help. Do you want to do that again? Nope. Okay. You looked lost. Well, that's, I'm sick. Hey guys, I'm sick. Peter Vincent drops his mirror and it smashes on the ground.
Starting point is 00:15:34 A little sliver rolls away. Yeah. To be brought up again in three hours. To be stepped on later by Jerry Dandridge, Yeah. Letting him know that that that he knows that they know that he's a vampire. And...
Starting point is 00:15:47 Yep. Then some more shit happens. Well, some more shit, you're just giving an amazing part. All right. So Evil's gonna peel off and go home and Charlie's like, no way do we've got to walk Amy home. So they're walking Amy home through the city. All of a sudden they're in the city. Right. And Evil's like, well, I'm just going to rip down this alleyway. And they're like, no, don't go alone, don't go to the alleyway. And it's like, fuck you guys, man, there ain't no vampire. This is dumb, dupe, dupe, dupe, killed by a vampire. This scene was actually pretty sad. So sad. Him crying. to thrrying. Him crying. the crying. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tho, tho, they. they. they. they don't they don't they don't go, they. they. Don't they. they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't they. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. they. Don't. they. they. they. they. they. the t. t. t. the t. the the the tap. the they. the the the they. they. they. they. they're going to die. Like, you're known from the beginning, evil is not making it to the end of this movie. I think I was afraid the I don't have a lot of feelings was going to have a period.
Starting point is 00:16:31 That was already, oh shit. This is my beaches moment again. No, like, you know he's going to die, so he gets killed, but it really upset me. It's really beautiful on some level because Stephen Jeffrey is really good at just, you know, like capturing that sad teenage boy who feels alone in the world. I have no idea what that felt like. And then the best part is that the compassion that Chris Sarandon has for him.
Starting point is 00:16:58 It makes him so much more handsome. He's just like, it's a beautiful, like taking him. And this is like, no, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, like, like, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that, that, th. that, that, that, that, that, th. th. that, th. thi. that, thi. thi. thi. thi. a beautiful like taking him and this he's like no one understands you and they don't like you yeah never gonna like you and he's like oh god. It's a real big bummer yeah but it's awesome I think it's really well done. Yeah. Kills him, kills him turns him. And then hunts down Charlie and Amy in a dance club. Club Radio. So good. It looked like so much fun. I want it like I've been to clubs you know and it's not really my scene. It's like too, you know, I don't, I'm not good at it. I feel like that could be good at club radio. Yeah, you can slightly gyrate. Oh, that's all you have to do, just slightly gyrate. I'm slightly gyrating right now. Which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which is, which is, which is, which is, which is, which is, which, which, which is, which is, which is, which is, which is, which is, it's, it's, it's, it, it's, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, I. th. It, it, th. It's like, th. It's like, th. It's like, like, like, like, like, like, th. It's like, like, like, th. It's like, like, to, to, it's Humberdink does with Marcy in a super gross scene because he's like a early middle-aged man and she's a teen and he's just fucking going to town on that.
Starting point is 00:17:54 Yeah. I mean technically he's probably a few hundred years old. Yeah. Well yeah. Well yeah. Even more like gross. The scene is really like the scene at the end of Dirty Dancing the Time of my life. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. I thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm just just just just just thi. I'm th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. I'm thi. I th. I the scene at the end of Dirty Dancing, the time of my life scene. I like half expected Jerry Orbach to be sitting in club radio. I don't know who that is. Jerry Orbock? Oh, I don't know. Get the fuck out. He was on Law and Order and he was like the, he was the dad and dirty dancing.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Come on, he's dead. The man is dead. He died for your sins. Please look for Jerry Orbach died for your sins t-shirt. I would wear that. I bet a lot of people would wear that. People who don't even like this podcast. We're not who he is. Well, you look him up. You'll know who he is when you see a picture of him. But yeah, it's really like the dirty dancing scene. It's like, just very like, sort of choreographed, sexy dancing in low light. And it's weird. Wait, bleeding right into a Terminator style fucking brawl where Terry Danders is just beating the shit out of the bouncer.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Yeah, he kills them. It's awesome. I like anything where you grab someone's hand and just crush it. I think that's a good plan. You're like, look how strong I am. Yeah, it's pretty sweet. That's a good wrestling move, too.
Starting point is 00:19:13 The feet of strength, you know? Not bought to you by house, or on a first name basis. Yeah. Earlier, we noticed that Jerry is looking at Aming going, she looks just like her, doesn't she? Oh, yeah. And Philly Conley goes, oh, she does. And then we go over to a painting of... Someone. Of someone from his past.
Starting point is 00:19:36 to never explained to him. That looks vaguely like Marcy Darcy. So Jerry Dantridge in that like that that homage to Dracula sort of thing where he's falling in love with the woman from his past yeah it's like you know all that jazz. And they kiss and it's extremely uncomfortable. So yeah he takes her to the back to the house gets her to take her top off it's real weird. And then he bites her and then he turns her and I wrote I didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't didn't th th th didn't th th th th th thi I didn't the thi thi the the the I didn't the the the the he he he he he he their he their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their she's their she's they. they. they. they. they. th. th. th. te. te. te. tape. tf. tape. tf. tf. tf. tape. tf. tf. tf. their. their. their. the he turns her. And I wrote, I didn't expect Amy to die a virgin. There's the one scene where I'm pretty sure he goes to... You know what? I thought that, but then... But she goes, I've never.
Starting point is 00:20:13 But then you can see his belt buckle. You can see his belt buckle. No, I thought it was. Oh, I tho. That's what I thought was happening. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, movie? How about I've never noticed this before? Oh, man. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Is that a vampire thing? Well, technically, I mean, you would think that they couldn't get erections or anything. Why couldn't they get erections? Uh, because they don't have any blood. But they're like the ultimate seducer but you can only kill. Your sexual release is murder. I'll take a popsicle stick to it or something. We're leaving this bit in. I know you thought this was coming out but this is staying in. So yeah he's making out with Marcy Darcy. She takes the top off, he bites her, he turns her and he's wearing the strangest collar in this scene it's like a boat neck sweater that curls down at the edges he's been wearing
Starting point is 00:21:08 turtlenecks he wears mock turtlenecks he wears the fucking weirdest shirts in this movie yeah and you know what it doesn't take away looks fucking good oh he's so good he's he's a and shirtless. So, so fucking hot. So, then we cut to evil, who is now a vampire, haunting Peter Vincent. Peter Vincent. And also a very sad and like haunting scene on some. I kind of, this seemed lost me a little bit because he like doesn't get any more like overblown or dramatic as a vampire. He's pretty much that way the whole movie. Well yeah he's on 11 the entire time. Yeah the entire time. And then he becomes a wolf?
Starting point is 00:21:54 Yeah. Well, you're skipping ahead. Because this is when he goes tells him that he's being hunted by a vampire, Peter Vincent takes him inside, and then he turns out he is a vampire, and pizza Vincent, and Peter Vincent puts the crucifix on his head. Oh yeah and it burns him and he jumps out the window. It looks like one of those Virgin Mary toast things. Yeah. It's a very iconic image at this point of the like screaming evil ed with the burnt crucifix, like, like, like, like, and like, and there, and there, and the, and the, and the, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, and he, the, the, the, th, the, th, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, the, Peter, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, they, they, they, th. thi. He's, thi. Peter, thi. thi. thi. Peter, Peter, the the, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter, the like screaming evil ed with the burnt crucifix, like there's t-shirts and all that jazz. So he jumps out the window and then Charlie comes to get Peter Vincent to get him to help him. And Peter Vincent's like, I can't do it, I gotta go, gotta go, gotta go, gotta go. This movie is very confusing to me because it's just a series of people going from like one house to another to another to another to another to another reading about the movie they did two weeks of rehearsals where they basically set it up like a stage play and they ran through the entire movie and I wonder if that's why there's those like set pieces oh maybe
Starting point is 00:22:51 because he was thinking of it as like a theatrical performance interesting so I have a hard time remembering the chronology right and also a lot ofto try and get into the thing. Yeah. And Ronnie McDow said that like he kind of based this character on the cowardly lion. There's the bravado when he's going to do a thing that he knows he doesn't actually have to do, but then when real shitridge's house and just walks in, just bust in the front door and then suddenly Peter Vincent's behind him. No, no, no, he's, no, you skipped over where he kills evil as a wolf in Charlie's house. I thought that was after.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Oh, fuck, who knows? Okay. So he kills evil. Right. Peter Vincent, like, we are vampires, wolves? Yeah, they can go back. That seems like it's chomping at the wolf man to me a little bit. You already have a bat, like why do you need?
Starting point is 00:23:53 No, they've always been able to transfer him between where are wolves and bats. I think what happens is Peter Vincent shows up and then goes to check on Charlie's mom. I have seen this movie the movie. the movie. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I've th. I've th. I've th. I've th. I've th. I've th. I'm. I'm. I'm th. I'm th. I'm thi. I'm th. I'm. I'm thi. I'm. thi. I'm. thi. thiol-I. thiol-I. thiol-I. thiol-I. thi. thomomom. thom. thom. th. th. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. the. te. te. te. tea. So. too. too. too. So. too. So, too. too. too. too. too. too. too. the on Charlie's mom. I have seen this movie so many times and I'm losing this part of the movie. Oh, I do have written here. I hope Charlie's poor mom doesn't come home to find evil on the carpet. So they're in Charlie's house when Eaul becomes, oh, because he goes to check on Carly's mom and waive and he pops up. Also, that's not what Charlie's mom's hair looks like.
Starting point is 00:24:25 No, she does not look like regular. Not at all, not even remotely. But Evel looks really great when he pops up because his teeth are just fucked up. He just says he's like gnarled fangs and he's got the contact lenses in, which at that point in time weren't contact lenses. They were just like half ping pongs. eyes and everything like they were really murderous looking. So they they engage in combat, evil turns into a wolf and jumps on Peter Vincent but as he's doing that Peter Vincent has a table leg that he stabs him with and then stakes the vampire and then another super sad scene I think is really sad because he just and Peter Vincent stays with him through his death
Starting point is 00:25:02 which I thought was really touching as well. It's a beautiful movie. Beautiful. So then we go back to Jerry Dandridge's place. Basically Hope Floats. I've never seen Hope Floats. It was literally the first thing to pop into my hand. I believe having never seen that movie, my review was so to shit.
Starting point is 00:25:20 So we go back to Jerry Dandridge. Back to another house. Yeah, back the house. And you know, Jerry Dandridge is just fucking with him. And like he does the cool thing where he's walking down and scratching the railing with his big, big long ass finger. And we are told by Peter Vincent, who knows this from movies, that Amy won't die if they kill the vampire the bit her before dawn. So they have to kill Prince Humberdink. Right, so there's a long battle that goes on throughout the entire house. They end up in the basement. This basement.
Starting point is 00:25:54 It's got hundreds of years of collected crap in it. No, that's not my beef. It is full of windows and gets excellent light because they bust out all the windows and he burns to death. Yeah, it gets light from every angle. Yeah, just like basements do. Oh, and there's the death scene for Billy Conley. I don't even understand what that was.
Starting point is 00:26:16 He just turns into goop. Yeah, why is, what is slime? I don't know. Okay. I don't know enough about the lore of the Jerry Dandridge vampire. I have several other questions. So yeah, they beat, they beat the vampire, Marcy Darcy terms back from, although we do see her full transformation in a vampire and she looks awesome. Why is her hair so long? You know, she's sexy now. That mean the idea of that making you mad. Well it's like like like like like like like she, th th th th th th th like, th th. She, th, th, th, th, thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to be thi, their, to be to be to be to be their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, thi, thi, thi, the. I to be too. too. too. too. too. the. theat, their, their their their their their, their of that making you mad. Well it's like she couldn't be pretty with her short haircut so they like literally just put a silly wig on her when she's a vampire and then when she wakes up again as like a teenage
Starting point is 00:26:53 girl her hair's back to being short. Come on fucking guys come on 80s. She has a giant mouth. Yeah her giant mouth is great. Yeah it looks it really nice prosthetic on that. Here's another question. Okay so they've they've they've they've they've they've they've they've they've they've they've they've. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. She's like th. She's like th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She's like, th. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She's. She's. th. th. th. th. th. th. She's th. She's like, th. She's like, th. th. thi. thi. th. thi. th. th. thi. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th another question. Okay, so they've killed very dandritch. Everything's fine. Yeah. Do you think Amy keeps the gauzy white dress that he dressed her in? I hope so. It looked really nice. I thought about her wearing until I cursing your prom. And then I wonder if it was like too many bad memories. I should say not everything is fine because there's a great, blah-brow moment at the end of the movie where Marcy Darcy and Charlie are making out and hanging out in his bedroom and then the camera pans over to the window across the street or across the way and Jerry Dandred his house and there's two little red eyes. Oh yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:27:35 I forgot about it. And then you hear evil laugh and that's the end of the movie. I love th th th th th th th th th th th th th an th an th an th an th an th an th an th an than than than, than, than, thin, thin, thin, thin, the, the, the, and than, and that, the, and the, and tham, and tham, tham, tham, tham, tham, tham, them, them, tham, tham, tham, tham, tham, tham, th an th an th an th an th an than, th an than, and than, and than, and than, and than, and than, and than, and than, and than, and than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than, than,. Well, I think the thing about this movie is that there's about an hour of it that's just people running around, fighting vampires vaguely. Like, there's no real, you know, you don't need to remember the chronology of it, you know, the beginning and the end and that's about it. Right. . so many times that it's just mush in my brain. Yeah. Probably it's like mixing with your own childhood. And you're like, remember when we had all this fog machines around our house and every time you looked at it, it was foggy?
Starting point is 00:28:09 I love the way that house looks when it's super foggy. It's so silly. It's so cool looking. So speaking of the set design, I have this the burbs all exist in the same universe. Oh, okay. Because it all looks like it could be on the same street. It really does. And part of me really likes that idea. Yeah. They're three of my favorite movies and like, they're three charming-ass movies.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So you're really great at that was like, that could be a world that I could go exist in. Can I go live where Monster Squad is now? Only if Rudy is there, speaking of Hot Bad Guys. And mentioning Monster Squad, not a lot of people know that that's where the name of this podcast came from. It's from a track. Alan, I didn't know that. Oh, really? It's a track on the Monster Squad soundtrack. I did not know that.
Starting point is 00:29:00 You probably tell me, and I just forgot. That's cool. I'm glad we did that. I love that movie. I didn't know in the soundtrack. Yeah, I would love to do that movie. There's a song in that movie that I really love where he's waking up for school with the day. The montage scene? Yeah, love that song. Rock Dance until your feet fall off. Yeah, so I really like the idea that this, they all exist. Yeah, they're all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all all. Yeah, they're all all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, they're all. Yeah, their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. Yeah, their their their their their th. Yeah, they're all friends. Yeah, and then I can go live there. So... You're scary German guy, aren't you? Probably. Probably by the time I get there, another piece of pie. God damn, that movie's so good. I know. All right, enough Monster Squad.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Yeah. So, I feel like this movie, for me, you know, I was 11 when I saw this movie. I was probably actually 12, because I saw it on HBO, so it was probably out for a year or two before I saw it. And I was just like, fuck, can this be teenage years? Can this be me growing up? Like, it was just like, yeah, because I didn't know what making out of girls? that stuff to know. Now you know, like, how th. How, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thin. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I, th. I, th. I, I, I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I, th. I. I. I. I. I was, th. th. th. th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. tha. tha. tha. th. th. th. how great would it be able to be able to meet like Zacharley and have him come and assist you in a situation? Like, that's stuff so cool. Isn't it so sad what you think your teenagers are going to be like and then what they're
Starting point is 00:30:11 really like? Oh, man. Yeah. Yeah. I read a lot of Sweet Valley High and well let's save that for our feelings podcast, feelings ambulence. We'rewolf Tears. Yeah, but I feel like this movie really like, it gave me hope and like something to aspire to. This could be my shitty suburban, you know, like growing up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:40 It wasn't. No, it was. There wasn't a vampire next door to you. No, there wasn't. Or was there? Nope. No, no, probably not really a couple. No, no, just a nice family. Yeah, this movie. It's good. It's good. It's really liked it. It's on Netflix. I wish it was shorter. Like, you know how I get about that. Where it's hard for me to sit for that long because I'm a petulant child. Seven. Whoa. Well, okay. You didn't even have to ask me. No, I knew it.
Starting point is 00:31:10 You jump right in. This is the first time. It's a beautiful. It was a seven. Yeah, it's good. For hot Chris Sarandon. Ah, fine, I love this fucking movie. For Hot Chris Sarandon?
Starting point is 00:31:28 Just for the total package. Oh, he is the total. I'm sorry, I'm done, I swear. I'm done. I'm going to, uh, I really want to give it a ten. I just fucking love it so much. I'm going to go nine. I'm going to downgrade it a little bit.
