Werewolf Ambulance: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast - Episode 261- You've Got Mail (1998)

Episode Date: December 30, 2019

In this week's episode, we're reviving a ghost of New Years' Past-- oh yeah, we're talking about a rom com. What better way to ring in the year 2020 than with a movie about TECHNOLOGY? We're talking a...bout the 1998 Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks classic, "You've Got Mail." Special topics for your consideration include: Ryan and Hanks at peak cuteness, wondering if the concept of negging is romantic, Jimmy Stewart impressions, an abbreviated history of film and just a little Unabomber chat.  You can check out last year's episode if you want to experience our entire romantic oeuvre with Episode 209, "Love Actually." I guess you could also try the somewhat romantic film "Days of Thunder" (Episode 76) or, if you just love horrible sex scenes, you could do worse than Episode 170- "Roadhouse."  Please also go check out our Youtube companion episode in which we play the game "The Leading Men in Meg Ryan's Rom Com...Movies " and discuss the most wonderful, horrible premise of a rom com that could ever exist. Starting point is 00:00:00 Oh, hey Katie. Hi, Alan. I'll be a little I'm cli-a cli Cl-cli
Starting point is 00:00:16 I'm just finishing up a little I am conversation here. Cli-cli-cli-cli-cli-cli. Yeah, I'm just committing some, you know, like, you know, like, emotional cheating. I'll be right back. Sure, sure, sure. Uh, that's romantic, right? Mm-hmm. I have several questions.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I have a few answers. I bet you have an answer to this one. Okay. Okay, so you have seen a number of romantic comedies by virtue of living with a person who likes them. I have. Are they ever funny? Because the name comedy is right there. Oh man, I feel like there have been a few that I laughed at because whenever I do, Missy
Starting point is 00:00:54 makes a point of pointing out that I laughed at something that happened in romantic comedy. So you can never forget. Yes. So there are some, presumably? There are some. Okay. This feels just more like a straight-up romantic movie, songs comedy. Yeah, I think they were like, let's get Dave Chappell? And he was like, there's nothing I can do here. What am I supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:01:16 What am I supposed to do? They were like, let's put on a weird thing where one of the employees falls for uh... musolini here no generally some francs that was so weird but why was it there why was it unresolved I don't know I was like oh though this movie has to turn on a dime now and become this investigative reporting thing it's such a throwaway okay here's my next question yeah did you have an a well user name use that name I did not oh damn just I the tha the the to tha the th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to to to the to to to the to to the to the theyyyyy they theyy theyyyyy. the the the the they. the the the the throwaway. Okay, here's my next question. Yeah. Did you have an AOL username? You use that aim?
Starting point is 00:01:47 I did not. Oh, damn. Just wondered what it was. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Like 98 I started fucking around. Me too.
Starting point is 00:01:55 That's when I got into the web. Okay. I was on that aim. That's as good as any aim name could be. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Not only was a straight edge, but I was also an anarchist. Yeah, you were really cool to be around. And you were just like super fun. Just kidding. You're great. Whoever you are. Straight edge, anarchists. Vegans, you can go to hell. Just getting, you're fine. You're fine. You you all. I was also vegan. I know. And boy so sad. And I've played an hardcore band.
Starting point is 00:02:29 So you know to yell to people. You are a literal stereotype. But speaking of stereotypes, Meg Ryan. Yeah. Spirit stereotype? How would she's stereotype? Well, she's a white lady who loves New York in this movie. I feel like she brought a hairstyle into fashion that still lingers to this day, that like suburban
Starting point is 00:02:51 mom haircut. Uh-huh. And no one could really wear it as well as she did, much like the Jennifer Aniston Rachel, you know? Sure. Like no one ever looked as good in it as she did. No. You know what, you don't have cheekbones for layers. I I I I I I I I I I I I I th I th I th no I th no I th. I th. I th. I don't I don't I don't th. I don't tho. I don't th. I don't th. I don't th. th. th. th. th. th. thoen. thi thi thi. thea. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. thea. to. to. toea. toea. toea. toea. toea. toea. thea. thea. thea. thea. th. Oh, I know I didn't. No. You know what? You don't have cheekbones for layers.
Starting point is 00:03:05 I don't. It's true. It's true. I did have a big crush on by grye when I was a kid though. She is the cutest, goddamn button nose. It's like unreasonable how cute her nose. I say as a person whose nose gets stuck in coffee mugs occasionally. Yeah. Oh, at the beginning I do want to apologize if I go into a coughing jag at any...
Starting point is 00:03:31 I'll edit it out. But you'll hear me wheezing afterwards. I'm still coming off at cold. Let's call this one the uncut episode and we will leave everything in. Oh, man. So, it's like a live show. Is this your first time watching You've Got Mail? Oh absolutely not. Is this the first time we've said the name of the movie in this episode? Definitely. I still am not sold on what year it is either. 96? I have it as 98. Mm-hmm. You're probably right. I don't know
Starting point is 00:04:00 way I'm just taking 96 from nowhere and digging my heels and that that's the way it is. Yeah, I've got it as 1998. Nora Ephron. Did a wonderful job writing it, I think. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Mm-hmm. I think the dialogue is extremely watchable. It's engaging. This is a very engaging movie. And an engaging cast. People you want to watch do things. 1998, huh? Drama slash romance?
Starting point is 00:04:25 In what world is this dramatic? I don't know. I don't know either. But what anyway, my point about AOL usernames is that Meg Ryan in this film is entirely too old to have an AOL username with the word girl in it. Shop girl? Shop girl, you are a shop woman. It bumped me out. It's not like she's headed since she was like 23. No, it's new to her because she just got that laptop that's like a fucking cinderblock. I don't know man, it's better than New York 152. Yeah, what is
Starting point is 00:04:59 that? That's what a serial killer would make there. Yeah. Pitsburg, and wasn't it his street address, just like his house number? I, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that, yeah, yeah, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's, th. It's, th. It's, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. theeee. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. It's th. killer would make there. Pittsburgh, and wasn't it his street address? Just like his house number? I believe so, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my god. That's different thing. Yes. So this is not, oh, what was your AOL? It was a KTPG, a shortened version of my name because four characters was the least you could have,
Starting point is 00:05:21 and I was very boring. I like it. Thank you. It. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. the th. th. th. It's. It's threat. th. threat. th. th. the the the threat. the the the the th. th. It's the the least you could have and I was very boring. I like it. Thank you. It's better than X allergy X. I'm like really relieved I didn't put 182 at the end of it, you know, so it's like a, it's the restraint I showed was formidable. I mean a 420 at that point in time putting 666. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:43 666 I mean. Nice. I don't, from that, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I don't, I, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, th, I don't, I, I don't, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, I, th, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, like, like, th, like, th... thi, like, like, thi, like, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, 666 I mean. Nice. I don't, from that, I don't know your, whether or not you did drugs. I don't know what your political affiliations were. Those are things you gotta get across right away. Also, who the fuck was I emailing? I wasn't emailing anybody. I was just ordering records online. Yeah, they were like, this guy's cool. It's one of us. Can I tell you I love in this movie? Please? Parker Posey. Oh God, she's a national treasure. I love Parker Posey and every goddame thing. What's your favorite Parker Posey? Well, I do love her in Christopher Guest Moves. Yeah, mine's best in show. Yeah. Yeah. I really liked Party Girl when I was a kid. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Yeah, I was a kid. I was like 24. Yeah. Yeah. That's a kid. 24 year olds are kids. God she's amazing. One of her first lines is my agent died which makes one less person I'm not speaking to. And I was like, I fucking love you, Parker Posey. Like, nobody can deliver lines like that and get away with it. What I love about this movie is no one in this film seems like they should be hanging out with the person they're in a scene with. I agree. Other than maybe Greg Kinear and Meg Ryan? Yes. But like, Dave Chappell and Tom Hanks, in the world? And like, Tom Hanks and Parker Posey? No way. And also, all these people are just tangentially around the written word. They're in like the
Starting point is 00:07:11 written word circle, which is newspaper writers, bookstore owners, bookstore conglomerate owners, and like publishers, and it's just... And Jeff Goldbloom from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. What? Because he was like the poet, who was mad at other poets. Oh, that's right. That's right. I forgot about that. What a great character for him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Yeah. So, Tom Hanks is dating, living with Parker Posey. And Meg Ryan is nearly living with Greg Kinnear, who is like probably the only redeeming character in this film. You think Kenier? Yeah, like, I'd go out with Kenir. He's so boring. He'd probably like my KTPG, A.I.M. screen name. I'm worried that you're going to be able to Google KTPG and find out something
Starting point is 00:07:59 terrible, though. I mean, I'm googling it now to to to to to to to to take it out? I'm Googling it now to find out. It looks okay. It's mostly a radio station in Paragold, Arkansas. Is that what A.R. is? Yeah. Uh-huh. All right. It's fine. I think we're good.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I just, the Parker Posey, Tom Hanks, when his most Jimmy Stewart's self in this movie? Yeah. It's just like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like, I the the the the to to to to to to to to to to to. to. to. to to to to to to me me. to. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to me. to me. to me. to me. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the t. today. today. today. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. most Jimmy Stewart self in this movie, yeah. It's just like, I can't get my brain around it, like, it's so weird. This is a weird concept for a film. Do you want to just walk us through what's happening in this movie? Sure. We have two star-crossed lovers who have found each other on aim, on American Online. But this conversation... I'm sorry, I just immediately ask you to get to get to get to get to get to get to get then and to get then and to get then, I can't thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the my thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th my th my th my th my th my th my th my th my th my th my th my th my thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. I can't get to get to get thi. I toei. I can't thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. I can't thi. I can't thi. But this conversation, I'm sorry I just immediately asked you to do that and cut in, but like, this conversation they're having, I wonder everything's a non sequit, sequitur. Like are they ever having, are they ever just like, man I had a bad day and the other
Starting point is 00:08:56 one's like, oh, what happened? You know, like, I can't know, build a relationship. What's up with bread? I think I'm falling in love. Yeah. Isn't it just like cracking open a loaf of warm bread and spreading it with butter? Isn't that just life and New York? Godfather quote.
Starting point is 00:09:21 No. I also find, well right I find Meg Ryan's optimism and cutziness to be so off putting. Did you like how much head movement she had when she typed? I don't. I also just don't like the things she says like isn't it magic? Isn't it just magic? It's like, you know nothing's magic. You're a shopwoman.
Starting point is 00:09:49 How do you feel about like romantic movies from like the 50s and 60s, like Carrie Grant movie? I have never seen one. Oh really? I'm a fan. It will not surprise anyone. And I just watched an affair to remember recently, which is also, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, a a the the the the the the the the the the th................................................... It will not surprise anyone. And I just watched an affair to remember recently, which is also like a, ah the fuck are these people supposed to end up in love at the end of this movie kind of movie? Yeah. And so I think I was like warmed to this movie because of that.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Okay. Like I had the Carrie Grant Sheen bringing me into this movie. Okay. But yeah, I just I loved that like, oh this is hustling, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, bust, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, a, a, a bust, a bust, a bust, a bust, a bustle, a bustle, a bustle, a bustle, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. this. Okay, okay. But yeah, I just I loved that like, oh this is hustly, bustling New York, open it up in the morning. Yeah, da da da da da da. Do you have a plate to the soundtrack of the cranberries? That is such a weird choice. It was such a weird choice in that scene. But I do have the note, fuck the cramberries are so damn good. I love them so much. Do you? Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Do you. Not my favorite Cranberry song? No. And they are not a party bat. No, no, and no one tells him that. Well we tell him that he doesn't listen. Okay I'm sorry so they're two star cross lovers. They they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're their they're to to to to to th. They're to th. to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. tho. thi. thi. they're they're they're they're the. they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to the. the. to to to to to to to to te. to to to tell. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the. the. the. I'm sorry, so they're two Star Cross lovers. Two, they found each other on aim. They don't know who they are. They've never met. They're just talking about bread and warm butter. And how that's just a euphemism for life. And New York. Everything's is revolving around New York. New York is the third top-built character in this movie. Yeah, it's like sex in the city. It's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like sex, it's like sex, it's like sex, sex, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th sex sex sex sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in sex in the city, but like cleaner. And they're both in sort of loveless relationships with partners that it doesn't make sense
Starting point is 00:11:33 that they're in a relationship with. And they both own bookstores. One owns a very independent small bookstore called Shopper on the Quarter, a nod to the Jimmy Stewart movie that this is a remake of. And the other is Barnes and Noble. Yeah, exactly. Did it like, sort of satisfy you to know that he too would be out of business now? It's got a good, like, well, wait for it.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Yeah, right, exactly. I like that a lot. I was on I-Dib earlier reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, it. Yeah, right, exactly. I like that a lot. I was on IOMDB earlier reading trivia about this movie. Yeah. And one of the pieces of trivia was all the cast were emailing themselves, emailing each other during this movie. And it's like, yeah. Why wouldn't they?
Starting point is 00:12:18 That's how you communicate. I guess that actually email is probably dead now, but like... I email everybody all the time. I'm not giving it up, it's so efficient. It's true. Why would you stop emailing? And you can search it. That's the most important thing to me. You can search it. You can send a picture, you can send a couple pictures, you can send links. Let me tell you about emails. I love email. Is that bad? You love email. I do. I need a romantic comedy with me and email. So it's kind of cute that they're having this like anonymous. Sorry, I was just picturing you in Clippy
Starting point is 00:12:55 walking up in the sunset. Clippy can get it. I'm sorry, you were saying? No, I don't know. So they're having emotional affairs, basically, with their online pen pals. Seemingly with no ramifications for it. Like it's almost like kind of encouraging this behavior on some level, I think? I guess so. Yeah, it doesn't, you don't feel bad for Kinear or Parker Posey, really. Like if you found out that your partner was like sneaking off to have conversations with somebody? On the internet, which you don't know about because you're using a typewriter? I think that would be upsetting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Their breakup scene is so fucking stupid. Greg Keneer and Meg Ryan? Yeah. I find it in fury. Yeah. He's like basically like, I'm kind of seeing this news anchor and I don't really love you. And she's like, I don't love you either. Is it that magic? Is it magic how we don't love each other and they both laugh in the scene cuts? Yeah. No matter what somebody's's going to go, oh, fuck you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Or maybe I'm just a bad person. I think someone's going to say, here's all the shit you did that bothered me, you know? Because you're always just training a man for the next woman. How I feel about life, but you're going to make sure you set it up well for her. Yeah. Yeah, it's true. No, I can I can verify that. Yeah, well. Thank you for your service. I love the conversation about like when they like because she tells her coworkers, her, I guess her employees. She has so many employees. Are they all working that are? They all need to be there? Maybe that's a way to cut costs. That's all. Yeah, you can kick Steve Zon. What's on? What is tho? What is wrong with his? T th. T th. T th. I don't know look it up on your
Starting point is 00:15:05 No, thanks, I don't want to don't do it. I don't care. I don't want to know also I really thought that the other woman was just a bunco Catherine herb Didn't you think that? Who's Catherine? She's in all those movies? Do you mean Heather Burns? No, th other employee that was at the store? Oh, is that her name? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I guess so. Um, but yeah, she's, so she's told her employees about this, like, a affair that she's having. They're talking about cyber sex. Don't have cyber sex. Oh, I had cyber sex. We got knocked off line. do it, they don't respect you anymore. It's so weird. Cybersex.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Oh man. A-S-L. Wait, what's A-S-L? Age sex vocation. That's what you would I am random people with. Yeah, ASL. You're like, what American sign language? It's like, this is weird.
Starting point is 00:16:02 This took a turn. I'm sorry, so she tells them about her affair. Yeah, and then Gene Stapleton gets off the great, I had cyber sex what we got kicked off the phone, blah, blah, blah, blah. And they're all like super supportive. Yeah, yeah, yeah, she should go meet him. Yeah, yeah, she none of them was like, what about Canier? Yeah, what about Greggy? Come on, a little Gregster. The annoying, pompous journalist you're in a relationship with.
Starting point is 00:16:32 You know who one of my favorite characters in this movie is? Go. Dabney Coleman. Oh yeah, National Treasurer as well. It's just every time you see him, you're just like, this guy, this guy, you know? What are you doing, Deppney Coleman? Like they're celebrating the closing of a store, of an independent bookstore. He's Tom Hanks's father in this film. He's married to a child, I think, as far as I could tell. Who's trying to fuck Tom Hanks? Right. Who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, who then, then then, then, then, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. the is the is theei. thei. thei. thei line, and it's never marry a man who lies. Which is actually kind of funny when I say it. Anyway, Dabney Coleman is like such a villain,
Starting point is 00:17:17 just laughing at the closing of an independent bookstore. It's, yeah, it does not paint the fox family as very good people like because Grandfather Fox is well Shiler Fox is also being a dick. It's also being a dick and it's also married to a child from what I can tell. Yeah, because that little girl was his right? She was. So that means his wife can be like no older than 45. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's gross. It's not gross. So that's not gross. Oh, I'm supposed. I'm supposed. I'm supposed. I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm s I'm sorry. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th, I th, I'm. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she she's to to to to to to to to to th. She's th. She's th. She's thi thi thi thi thi to thi's thi's thi's thi's thi. She's thi. She's thi. She's th. She's than 45. Yeah. That's gross. It's not gross. Oh, I'm just saying it's gross. This movie is setting it up like it's gross. Because it's gross because Tom Hanks is taking the child around
Starting point is 00:17:54 and saying this is my aunt. Yeah, it's all, it's all punchlines. Yeah. All this like weird behavior is punch lines for this movie. Yeah, totally. So, so so, so, so I so I so I so I so I so I so I, I, I, I, I, I th, I th, I th. thi is, thii is, thi is, thi is, thi is, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. theee. th. the. thee. that the. the. th. th. th. th movie. Yeah, totally. So yes, I think within the confines of this storyline, it is gross that they're doing this stuff. Yeah. It's super weird.
Starting point is 00:18:11 So they eventually have a meat cute, where Tom Hanks brings his aunt and uncle into the store? Yeah, aunt and brother, I think, because one of them is Dabney Coleman's kid. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Jesus Christ. Also, I said, aunt because you did, and then I was like immediately very upset with myself, because the word is aunt. It's kind of you right in the middle of it. Yeah, H-A-U-N-T. How do you say that word?
Starting point is 00:18:34 Haunt? Ants are related to you, aunts live in the ground. Steal your picketing basket. Wait. So they go to her store, because he's checking up the competition. Stelthily. I don't think he is though. I think he's just buying shit. Well, this is the scene, like the whole setup to this is him taking them to like the street fair. And it's just just, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the the thi, the the thi, the the thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, the thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to thi's to thi's to to thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii's the the the thi, the thi, th them to like the street fair and it's just like we're going to give them adorable Tom Hanks right now. He's just going to be fucking out of control Tom Hanks.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I mean to be fair, Tom Hanks with a child is like real, real, real, real, real, real cute. Tom Hanks and two children riding around in tiny cars in a circle. So fucking cute. So, wea to'n'a, what are, what are, I I th, I th, I th, I th, I to to be to be th, I to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be. I, to be. I is to be to be th, I's, I's, I's, I's, I's their. I's their. I's their. I's their. thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. tome. tomorrow, tomorrow, tom. tom.'m loving every minute of it. So he goes to a bookstore, they have like a kind of awkward interaction where he won't divulge his last name, but his brother baby. Not his baby. He's a brother baby. Keep spelling love name Fox out because he just learned how to spell his own name. Yeah, it's pretty funny, I guess. No it isn't. No it's meant to be, but it thi they have the kind like like like like like like like like like. It the kind. It the kind. It the kind. It the kind, he the kind, he the kind, the kind, the kind, the kind kind, the kind, the kind kind the kind the kind the kind the kind the kind the kind the kind the kind they have kind they have kind the kind they have they have kind they have like a kind they have they have they have they have they have they have they have they have a kind, they they they's kind, he they's a kind, he they's a kind, he they's a kind. He they's a kind. He their, he. He their, he. He their, he. He their. He their, he. He their, he. their, he. their, their, their, their, their, their, kind. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. their kind. their kind. their, their, their, their, their, the name Fox out because he just learned how to spell his own name. Yeah, it's pretty funny I guess. No it isn't. It's meant to be, but it lands flat. Did you have the note the street fair looks like the one that'd pay the ghost? I didn't but that's pretty good to you. What was the oh the howling to your sister's a werewolf, there was just the endless street fair. Your sister's a werewolf.
Starting point is 00:20:07 Oh, that's a good-ass movie. It's sexier than this movie for sure. Because, wasn't Mickey from Buey's Big Adventure fucking around in that movie? Uh-huh, uh-huh, little ladies with a lot of hair taped on them. Yeah, this is a weirdly sexless movie. Yeah, was, was, was, was, was, was, was, th, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, oh, thi, oh, thi, tho, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, tho, oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that's a, thi, thi, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tha, tha, tha, that's a that's a that's a that's a that's a thoooooo-a, that's a that's a that's a that's a tha, tha, a taped on them. Yeah. This is a weirdly sexless movie. Yeah, there's no sexiness in this. There's like, it's like a New York City where eroticism has been eradicated.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Yeah, it's all very, instead of like a spaghetti strap dress, as you should have in 1998, it's all just linen and carigans. You know? They're all dressed like, um, like Diane Keaton. Yes, it is very Diane Keaton. I guess that's Nora Ephron for you though, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. She was like, put on this linen dress, put on this cardigan, you're gorgeous. And they did, they look great.
Starting point is 00:20:54 She's fine. It's just not at all sexy. So they have this awkward interaction, and then they th later at a party where she finds out that he is indeed Joe Fox. And he like unreasonably lashes out at her. I can't remember what he says but I was like wow that was like way mean. This is the heel turn for his character that he keeps going for the rest of the fucking movie and she's still falls in love with him. Yeah it's weird he's negging her but in a like not even funny way. He just, oh he says something about her store being so full of its own self-importance that it's like, it's just like monstrous.
Starting point is 00:21:31 It was the bookstore equivalent of Ivan Drago, I must break you. Yeah, yeah. But even they became friends at the end. Oh, it's true. If I can change and yous can change, everybody can change. Isn't that cool how Rocky stopped the Cold War? He did a good job. He did a really good job. Remember that Rambo movie where he was fighting with the Taliban? Yes, the brave, that film is dedicated to the brave men and women of the Taliban, isn't it? Oh my god. That is such a sad movie? Or maybe that's the second the first tha tha tha tha thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi that's thi thi that's thi thi that's that's that's thi that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thiiii thoooooooooo-s. that's that that that that that that that that that that that the brave men and women of the Taliban, isn't it? Oh my God. That is such a sad movie. Or maybe that's the second one, it's not that sad. No, the first one's very sad. So sad.
Starting point is 00:22:09 I am surprised that you've seen the Rambo movies. We did a Rambo's one year. We did a Rockathon, weigh, on New Year's Day, so watched all the Rambos. And then the next year we did Polyshore Athon, and that was when I put a stop, put a stop to the Thons. I'm going to go out at a limb and say there was not a Polly Shore movie thing. No, we did not leave the house that day. No. The early Polly Shores are great, but when you get into adopted, you just kind of want to die. Yeah. Yeah. So here's the thing that I thought was it would have been a very good turn to this movie is after he has this moment where he lashes out at Meg Ryan at the party, he goes home and writes an email to his pen
Starting point is 00:22:59 pal who he doesn't know is Meg Ryan, and he's like, don't you ever just like find yourself being the worst version of yourself and acting out of aggression and I was like this is a serial killer like that's something a serial killer says like I just can't control myself and I just become the worst version of myself and I'm aggressive and I was like what if he's a serial killer? What if he was? See this is where I thought he'd be like I'm not gonna do that anymore. I'm gonna be the good good the good the good the good the good the good the good the good the good th. th. the good th. th. th. th. th. th. thus the good thus thus the thus. thus. thus. thus. the. the. theo- thi's a the this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a this is a the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. the. the. the. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the thought he'd be like, I'm not going to do that anymore. I'm going to be the good person from here on now. I've learned a lesson in all of this. No, he doesn't.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Just double down. If you're going to learn a lesson, it's doubling down. And then they start seeing each other, tiny city. Everybody just bumps into each other, just all the time. Just like Pittsburgh, huh? Just like Pittsburgh? Just like Pittsburgh. I go a year without seeing someone I know. Yeah, someone who works in the same circles as you.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Yeah, yeah, yeah. No. Not here. She's in the grocery store pushing that tiny, tiny cart. Why was it so small? Apparently that's the first time they've ever let a movie film in that very famous grocery store. You did a lot of research and I thought we had a deal where we don't know things. It's been like two weeks since I watched this movie so I was just trying to refresh myself. Had a weird recording schedule. The holidays they get in the way. Oh and being super sick. Yeah. How do you feel about singing at parties? I can I just show you my next note? Read the top note. I cannot with
Starting point is 00:24:33 singing at parties like this. It's so uncomfortable. What if you don't know the song? What if you don't like to sing? What if you have a terrible voice? Should you just go to the bathroom and wait till it's over? Like what do you do? I was talking to. I the the the to. to. to. to to to to to the to to to to to to their. I to to to to to their. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. to. to. to. to. their. their. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I'm. I'm. I. I'm. I. I go to the bathroom and wait till it's over? Like what do you do? I was talking to him with a friend and they were like, oh yeah my uncle's gonna show up early so he can set his guitar stuff up for like singing afterwards. And I was just like, huh? Who knew your uncle had a gig here tonight? Like, oh, oh I hate it. When he does run Rudolph run, you guys are going to lose your goddamn mind right now. I don't know which is worse is like the group sing-along or somebody performing. Because the group sing-along you could maybe just fade out of the room and go check out what's in their medicine cabinet?
Starting point is 00:25:14 Yeah. But like, somebody performing, do you have to pay attention to them the whole time? I think so. Well, what the fuck? How are you are you? I? I? I are are you? I? I are you? I? I the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. I th. I thu? I thu? I thi? I thi? I thu? I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi? I thi. I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thee thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. thi. tha. tha. I assume. And tiny shrimps, if you got them. Which is why, why else would you go to a party if it's not talking cheese or shrimp? I assumed he was setting up his guitar to play Christmas carols and everyone was going to be joining in. That's the vibe I got. I think it's because I saw the exorcist too early and the sing-along scene and that ends with Reagan pissing of the floor and saying you're gonna die up there? Yeah. It's just like no I'm not gonna. No, that's how all sing-alongs in, a possessed child. So then the reveal happens to Tom Hanks where they've decided to meet, the pen
Starting point is 00:25:54 house have decided to meet, and she's meeting him at a cafe cafe she's got a book and a flower. Oh before this the I'm sorry not to interrupt but they she has gone on a a media blitz to try and like overpower the Fox bookstore right so he saw her talking shit on TV and then he was interviewed and they like fucked up his quote so he's all pissed off about this. Yeah he looks looks like a dick. Yeah, and Dave Chappelle's like, mmm, you look like a dick. But also he is a dick. Yeah. Sorry, so yes, cut forward to they're going to meet up.
Starting point is 00:26:31 So they're going to meet up at a cafe. And he takes Dave Chappelle with him to see if she's pretty, which is lame. he's gonna send her ass back to the project, you know, food stamps. Because that's what Dave Chappelle says, because he's the black person in this movie. I would like to now rewind it 20 minutes ago where you said this was a well-written movie. I don't think that it was very sensitively handled for Dave Chappel, no. I do think that it's a well written movie with its little hiccu. But no, it is a serious conflict of interest for her boyfriend to be writing that story in the New Yorker or whatever. For sure?
Starting point is 00:27:06 Yeah. That's all I want to see. He's like, no, it's not a conflict of interest. It one hundred percent is. I love when he's getting interviewed about that and that lady is totally trying to fuck him on the TV. Yeah, but then he does fuck her, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, th, th, th, th, th, th, that's, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, it's that's that's thi, it's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's th. It's that's th. It's to to to to to that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's th. It's th. It's th. It's not thi, it's not thi, it's not thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. that's not thi. It, it's gross. Get a job. Be professional. Come on, Susie McCombs. Come on, Susie McCombs, I try to fuck nobody. No, Susie McComb's is just rolling her eyes and disdain. She ain't trying to take Andrew Telly
Starting point is 00:27:34 to Bown. Why are we talking about Hells 2? I am so sorry. Hells to LLC. to LLC. So this is where th, th,, because he finds out that it is her, because Dave Chappelle looks in the window. And he leaves her there, and then he comes back and taunts her, which is cruel. It's just cruel. Like making fun of the flower that she brought to show him who she was. That sucks. It's cruel. Yeah. Yeah. It's a bummer. Yeah. Yeah. It's a bummer. Yeah. It's. th. th. Because. Because. th. Because. Because. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's that. It's that. That sucks. It's cruel. Yeah. It's a bummer.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Yeah. And then, yeah, he just comes in and bull is bullying her. Yeah. Now he's behind her being a dingus is a move that I have. He moves to another table. Yeah. But just keeps like berating her, yeah. Knowing that her friend isn't thureeee the f f f f f f f ftheuuuuuuuuuu- th th th th th th th th th their th th th th the isn't going to show up because he was the friend. Fucking dick shit. And then she, earlier they had a conversation, when they were having the conversation about him being mean, and she's like, I wish I could say what I was thinking.
Starting point is 00:28:34 Yeah. So she does. And then she feels like shit. He looks so fucking offended by it. He totally had it coming. He doesn't get to be a titty baby about it after he's been a monster. You don't get to zing someone four times and then get all crestfallen when they get you once. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Fuck off. Men. As a disher of insults, I have this like high toleran show. I'm like, come on, let's go. Come on, bring it back. to me. thi. the th. th. th. they. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thin. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I could never take it when people can't take it. If you're going to get into that like going toe toe like. Yeah, you can't get, you can't be a T.B.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Yeah. So yeah, they're both, they're both, maybe the rooftop killer. I actually liked that a lot. I also there was a line in that scene that I actually laughed out which was the Cathar Nurb, Bunko Catherine Irb was like, remember when you thought Frank might be the Unabomber? Because I just love a good Unabomber reference I think. I worry that kids these days just don't know about the the unubom. I. I. I. I the un unababababam. I think the unibomber is just gone from the public consciousness. I think he exists only on Wikipedia. I feel like, yeah. Yeah. I feel like everything from 20 years ago is just gone. But do you, you remember the unibomer, right? Oh for sure. It's so crazy. To this day, if I put on sunglasses and a hoodie, I look like the unibummer right now. I'm the th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. Starting point is 00:30:11 that? Because he's so eloquent and he writes these manifestos. I feel like Greg Keneer was like, oh, I'm in a romcom, I'm just going to be a fucking ham. Uh, also, where the fuck is Greg Keneer? He was everywhere for like 20 minutes? I don't know. That's a good question. I'd look him up, but again, not going to. This is where we find out that Bertie was once in love with Franco. Can I tell you something that I thought before that? I thought that the mother, because one of the main drivers of Kathleen Kelly, Meg Ryan's store, is that it was her mother's store and she worked there since she was a little girl and her mother passed away and it was all very magical and they loved to twirl. I hate the twirling. But Bertie, Gene Stapleton has a locket with a picture of Meg Ryan's mother in it.
Starting point is 00:31:05 And I was like, oh, were you lovers? No. No, they were just best buds. No, they were lovers. I'm 95% sure they were lovers. That's all. I want them to be lovers. Yeah. OK.
Starting point is 00:31:20 But she also loved Generalissimo Franco. So, varying tastes is what I'm saying for Bertie. It's just so, it's just so weird. It's, she tells this store, I don't know if it's supposed to mean something. Like sometimes you fall in love with a bad man, but he's nice to you. Is that what the lesson is? Because I don't think that's the lesson of this movie. of this movie. You know? Yeah. Women get taken by... Strong men, yeah. You know, I've often have had this theory that women are often are taken by tall men. Women always think that tall men are tall men are going to be interesting, but they're not, they're just tall. Yeah, we're just tall. We're not interesting. You're fine. I mean, you're okay. But there's a weird, th th th th, th, th's a th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a weird, th's a not, they're just tall. Yeah, we're just tall, we're just tall men. Not interesting.
Starting point is 00:32:05 You're fine, I mean, you're okay. But there's a, just a weird thing about it. I can't describe it, tall men. You think, wow, they must have something to say. I feel like this is like, earlier this evening, where Missy was like, you look like, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, I, I, I, I, I, I, th, th, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, th, th, I, th, th, th, th, th, th, but, but, but, but, th, th, but, th, but, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, It's such a good question. That's so loaded. Yeah. What she say? She was like, well, I, I, we just kind of moved away from. She just packed up her stuff and left.
Starting point is 00:32:31 I mean, am I like wine commercial or some wells or am I like, you know, citizen cane? Yeah. So, Meg Ryan breaks up with Kinneur in the stupidest break-up scene ever. Tom Hanks breaks up with Parker Posey after they get stuck in an elevator, which I thought she was actually very funny and charming in because she's a fucking hero. She was just being 100% of Parker Posey. It was great. How could you not love that?
Starting point is 00:32:54 Oh, where are my Tic-Tacks? What? If I ever get out of here, I'm getting my eyes lasered. She's fucking love her. I wonder if they were just like, all right go. I bet she ad liped some of that for sure, yeah. I feel like she was in everything for a minute and then out of things for a while and I feel like she's back in stuff again which I'm excited. Yeah, she's just so fucking funny. Her comedic timing is insane. Dabney Coleman moves on to the boat with Tom Hanks because he moves onto his boat. But then we never see him again, do we?
Starting point is 00:33:29 No, you just get the one night where they're kind of like commiserating about being bad at being in relationships. And you get Tom Hanks being like, well, I don't want to be like my dad. My dad's lame. Your dad's fucking Dabney Coleman. You don't speak to Dabney Coleman that way that way that way. So then the store closes. Yeah. They did have all this business. They get all this business from the the press like blitz. It's not enough to keep him with flow. She said it doesn't make a bit of difference, which I didn't understand at all. You didn't sell any more books? Katie, you don't understand the numbers. I guess. I feel. It the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the store. It doesn't. It doesn't. It doesn't. It doesn't. It doesn't. It doesn't the the the store th the store th doesn't doesn't doesn't the store the store th th th. It doesn't the th. It doesn't th. It doesn't th. It doesn't that that that that that that. that that that that that that that tho tho tho the numbers the way that Jean Stapleton understands the
Starting point is 00:34:05 numbers. I guess. I feel like, I'm fucking done with this. Let's see what we could do to get this shit or shut down. Yeah, she's like, I would like to retire and I don't know why I have to keep working here because my job doesn't seem to require me to be in my weird sex with authoritarian leaders. I mean, I'm now really hung up on the idea that that, because those lines are so throwaway, like, that there is a parable to be learned here. I mean, it would kind of make sense because Tom Hanks decides that he's into Meg Ryan.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Yeah, but the way that he's going to get her is to manipulate her. Yeah, so he's still doing the pen pal thing even though he knows who she is. Because he just can't quit her. Right. And who could? She's Meg Ryan. She's adorable. Don't you think Dezies are the friendliest flowers? If someone said that to me I you think dazes are the both a dork because she had a head cold at the time? You know what, if a woman says don't come up, I'm sick, please don't. You gotta push through. Why? I always think about, like, because Missy and I talk about these romantic comedies a lot because I have a lot of problems with them, as being really poor representations of what to do to get into a relationship. Strongly agree. So we talk about where to have met Sally. And there's all these
Starting point is 00:35:30 adorable interstitial parts with the old couples that are like, and that's how I got her. And there's the one guy that's like, I went into a store every day and asked her out and she said no, he eventually wore me down. That's like, no! Stop it! Yeah. That's really bad. That's not good. Really bad. But so he pushes his way into her apartment, where she's like,
Starting point is 00:35:55 first of all, I don't believe that this Meg Ryan would have tissues everywhere. You use it, you toss it. You don't put it on your dining room table. You don't put it on your dining room table. You don't stuff it under your pillows? No, you use it, you toss it. Mm-hmm. It's very gross. But also she looks fine, so.
Starting point is 00:36:10 This is the point where I have the note this movie is eternal. It is really long. It's over two hours. So she, uh, he comes up, she's sick. He heard she was sick. Where? Through the written word circle? She's got a fucking cold. Uh, Parker Prosy told me.
Starting point is 00:36:32 Oh, right, because she was considering working for her? It doesn't matter. Yeah, she wants her to be an editor for children's books. Which I'm sure she'd be great at. I'm sure, oh good for you, you'll land on your feet. No, it is good for her, I'm sorry. So he suggests through, they just keep meeting up. He keeps bumping into her. Yeah, he's like, via email, she's like, should we meet or whatever?
Starting point is 00:36:56 And he's like, yes, we should, but I have a project that needs some tweaking. But the project is his relationship with her. So he keeps running into her, which is also probably stalking. And I feel like she's probably like, oh man, I gotta go to CVS tomorrow. He's like, oh, man, I gotta go to CVS. CVS, but then he shows up at CVS. But that's what I'm saying, like, they're not like, isn't it funny how you have to go to the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy the pharmacy,
Starting point is 00:37:17 , to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go you shake them, they rattle. Just like New York, a city that never sleeps. Do you know what I mean? It's just fucking nonsense. I am so not romantic. Did you like the line where he's tellain? Did you like the line where he's telling her that she should meet her internet lover? And he's like, what if he's a fatty?
Starting point is 00:37:45 Yeah, that was brutal. It's like, Tom Hanks. Did you like the Meg Ryan? I was like, well, I wouldn't care. Yeah, I did. Yeah, I appreciated that. I could see her with a big guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Big, tall. ruling it out. I'm just saying you've got to be realistic. But also she could never be with someone who had a boat. Yeah, but then she is I guess. Yeah, uh-huh. Mm-hmm. Boats. What's up with boats? I would love to live on a houseboat. Ew. And what? Who was the best reaction you could have? Ugh. Ugh. I'm sorry to hear that. So he catfishes his way into, all right, we should meet up. Let's go meet up at that park.
Starting point is 00:38:38 But first she was wearing the worst khakis I'd ever seen and I was like, please don't wear them on the date, please don't wear them on the date please don't wear them on the date please don't wear them on the date and then I liked that she changed because she wore those gross ass khakis with Tom Hanks the first like did she not if she wanted it to be him why was she wearing the khakis you know they were they were that 90. But instead you went and put on a khaki dress and matching khaki cardigan. It was linen. And it was beautiful because it's New York in the springtime and there's like literally no trash anywhere. There's also no people of color anywhere.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Dave Chappell lives here, that's true. Also it doesn't smell like piss somehow. No. And when I say lives here, I mean this universe. So he's got the dog, Brinkley, and he's going to, he and Brinkley are going to meet her at this bend in the park path or whatever. And Tom Hanks is walking her to change her clothes back to her apartment. He doesn't change his clothes by the way. It does not. He's gonna run and get a dog. And they're kind of, they're like leading up to like their interest in each other. They'd be going on these like meet meet up dates for like a couple weeks now. And she's like but I couldn't be
Starting point is 00:39:58 unfaithful to this man I've never met so I have to go now. It's like, you are unfaithful to your boyfriend that you were practically living with. God damn Keneer. Sorry, he bought too many typewriters. Don't you have two of these already? So he's like, yeah, I understand he takes off. Dun, da, un, unbeknownst to us. He's the guy who's been emailing her this this this whole time. And that is not unbeknownst to, oh no. That is the plot of the film! Would you like me to read my next note? I'd love to.
Starting point is 00:40:29 God damn it, I cried when he comes up with Freakley. Look, you've been ill. You've been under the weather. I know I was watching this as I started getting ill and in retrospect I was like, oh yeah, you're you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you're like oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, you're you're you're you're you're you're you're thi, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, you're like, oh, oh, oh, you're like, you're like, oh, oh, you're like, you're like, you're like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, you're to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. th th th. thi, you're thi, you're thi, you're thi, you're thi, to thi, to to thi, to to to to to to thi, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to are all the time. That's like how it is when you get your period. There's a moment where she realizes he's been catfishing her. Like she realizes he knew, like here's the thing, it's just so hard to imagine how later she wouldn't be like, so all along, all along you. I wanted the six months later conversation of like, what the fuck? This is kind of a messed up thing that you did.
Starting point is 00:41:05 Yeah. It's just, fast forward to them in couples therapy, and I'm like, I don't think this is gonna work. And the therapist's like, oh God, you did what? Yeah. It's just this idea of like this person knowing something that you don't know and they're using it as like power of the power, the power,'s Tom Hanks and yes it's adorable. Yeah, I mean I think and I think no other actor would have been okay to be in that role because otherwise they would not be able to pull off the like awshucks it's me Tom Hanks you know.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Yeah that's why you needed a Jimmy Stewart in the previous can I tell you something I literally don't know who Jimmy Stewart is. It's a wonderful life. No. Uh. Is it? How do you not know Jimmy Stewart? I don't know. What do you think I like movies? He's a very famous film after.
Starting point is 00:41:56 I mean, I've heard the name, but I don't know what you're like, I don't know. He's like the awkshuxiest. Mr. Smith goes to the most, Mr. thia. Mr. S-I. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to. He's just the most, I think actually that's Henry Fonda, never mind. Don't know him either. These are old movies. Look, I got a niche. Well, I grew up watching old movies. Sure. Yeah, because I'm an old man. But that's why I've seen Masters of the Universe a hundred times, you know, like. For sure. It's my, it's my g generations, I the the the the th. It's th. It's th. It's sure. It's my, see, it's my generations, oh, it's a wonderful life is heat masters of the
Starting point is 00:42:30 universe also with Dolph Lundgren. I just have him on the brain, I guess. But Jimmy Stewart is like, oh, yeah, well, yeah, oh, yeah. That sounds the rainbow place. I wanted it to beat you. And I was like, did you have like an inkling that it was him? Because if so, like, why didn't you do anything about it? He walled me down.
Starting point is 00:43:01 No. And that's, somewhere over the rainbow is not a good choice. Do you agree or disagree? I am a I am a sucker for that song. Somewhere over the rainbow. This is just revealing all of these sides to you. This like this romantic like. Oh god yeah yeah yeah. I guess I never really realized you were a romantic. Yeah, I, uh, my favorite poet is Pablo Naruda and I love reading his love sonnets. Oh, man, whenever somebody reads those in a speech at a wedding, I always cry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so I'm a marshmallow.
Starting point is 00:43:37 I am the softest soft that's ever softed. I'm good with it. This is who I am. I've always always the easiest the easiest th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tho. tho. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. I am. I've always been the easiest cry on the planet like yeah and you know as shown by me cry at the end of this fucking nightmare of a movie. Well do you want to rate it? I do. Go first. This is the second time I've seen you've got mail. I watched it for the first time last year because my partner again is a big romcom movie person I watched this in sleepless in Seattle back to back. Mmm. Woof. The first time I watched this, I got so fucking angry. I was like, this is manipulative bullshit and I hate this? This time? Cried at the end of it.
Starting point is 00:44:15 It's a throwback to those older romantic movies. I get that, I enjoy those movies. But they are of a time that this is not of. This is made 40 years after those movies and we should have evolved. But they're on the internet, Alan, they're on the internet. Yeah, so I get what they were shooting for, I think it's a bad target. Sure. I will give this a five.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Wow, okay. But like it's skewed because Megineine Tom Hymings are so fucking adorable. I know. And they have great chemistry, Joe versus the volcano. Oh my god, they're perfect together. Yeah, yeah. How about you? Oh, I love to it. I'm giving it a nine.
Starting point is 00:44:53 I love this. I've seen this movie 400 times. Yeah, it's, City of Angels. City of Angels. What I love about it is like, these like strong feminist women that I know totally love this movie. It's like so anti-feminist in so many ways, but... I don't know. I love it. I love it. I love that that's just like...
Starting point is 00:45:21 Yeah, fuck it. It's just, you can't... We can be multi-dimensional beings. Not me, I am generally very cynical, but I guess on this one I'll get a pass. Uh, no, I love it. It's, um, you can't do better than Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:45:36 You can't seen the Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers movie yet? No, but I think I will cry at that because as a Pittsburgher I have a lot of Mr. Rogers, love in my heart. Because I also didn't realize that people everywhere knew them until I was in college. Oh really? Yeah, I thought because he was like, Mr. Rogers was so present and Mr. McPhilie like the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, the people, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, th, th, thi, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi,, they would be in the parades in the name, you know, they would be like reading in the assembly at your school, like, they were around. Sure, sure. So I just thought that they were like our local celebs. And when I realized that, like, Mr. Rogers had toubts.
Starting point is 00:46:14 Like, they it turns out, it is not. I have not seen it either and I guarantee I will cry to that. Like, I don't even have high expanse. It doesn't look that good to me, but I'm gonna cry anyway. Oh, I hear it's really good. Yeah, it's got nothing about good good reviews. tha good good good good good fucking hell. Can I tell you Mr. McPhilly story? Please. When I was in college, I wrote for Pittsburgh magazine,
Starting point is 00:46:49 which was at that time owned by WQED. Right. So I would work in the WQED building, which is near the Pitt campus, and the studios are still in there, like all of the studios of all the PBS programming that comes out of WQED is there. So one morning, get in the elevator, it opens up, Mr. Fucking McPhilly is in there. Wearing the suit, he was like cutting some promos or whatever in one of the studios downstairs, and I was like gobsmacked.
Starting point is 00:47:16 I didn't know what to say. And I just said, I was like, oh gosh, I'm just such a big fan of thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thian thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. If you ever need anything autographed, you know, you let the woman in whatever section know and she'll show, she'll get it to me. And then when I got off the elevator at the magazine floor, he said, speedy delivery and waved to me and I like, the door like, the doors shut, and I was the the the the door's the the to to to to to to to the the to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the wo the wo the wo the wo, the we, the wa, and she'll the wa, and she'll the wa, the wa, the wa, the woman the woman the woman the woman the woman the wa, and she'll the wa, and she'll the wa, the wa, the the the the the the the the the th..., she's th., she's th. It was just a wonderful thing that happened to you. It was a great thing that happened to me, yeah. I mean, just imagine being like in a position where you're like, I can bring joy. Yeah. I'm gonna joy it up right now. And I'm gonna do it. And that's what Tom Hanks and the New Year's do in the New Year's. It is New Year's. Probably should have done when Harry met Sally. Yeah. For the New Year's connection.
Starting point is 00:48:08 Yeah. You got any New Year's resolutions? No, I don't do those. No. You? I'm going to try to be more patient. Yeah. It's a thing Is that just like a taking a, count into 10 sort of situation or?
Starting point is 00:48:25 Just, yeah, just giving it a minute before I react. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm always jealous of people in movies and television who like are very level and measured because I'm so reactionary and I'm constantly fucking talking, so I can't ever be like measured. That's not patience I guess I'm thia. thia. thia. thiii. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi, just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just just, thi. Basically I'm gonna be a cooler person, a cooler headed person. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't start wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses everywhere everywhere. To be a
Starting point is 00:48:53 cooler person. Sure, sure. I have a leather jacket it looks extremely stupid on me. Can I take you to a little place that I like to call end of the year mail bag? only if you say it with a little more o'. person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person person... Here's one from Justin O'Hughes.
Starting point is 00:49:21 Can you guys play clips from your bands? Get on the internet. You can find them. Figure it out. Here's another quick one from Justin O. Hughes on Instagram. I just know Hughes. So what's your address? Can we create a Patreon so we can force?
Starting point is 00:49:40 I mean pay you to watch HellraraZ3? Ooh, which one is that? That's not space. No. For a space. Yeah, and if we get a treat for you, Justin. Justin, I gotta tell you, we'll probably get to it. You need not pay us.
Starting point is 00:49:54 This will be free. Although I've still, we've talked in the past about doing a patron. We just don't know what to do what tho. I think I get nervous when I owe people something. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if you give me money, yeah, I feel like I have to perform. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Like, because right now if this sucks, like, fuck you, it's free. Yeah, it does create like a, it puts a little stank on it that wasn't there before money got involved.

What's your least favorite traditional holiday movie and why? I think we know the answer to this. Love Actually. Yeah, it's gonna be love actually. Why? Because it's garbage? It's a trash bag of trash characters doing trash things.. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. thi. to. thi. to. to thi. thi. thi. the. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the it's garbage. Which is just such a gross masturbatory thing thatthat I can't even I can't even tell you Helen Rickman being a fucking dick to Emma Thompson. Oh, how dare he?
Starting point is 00:51:10 And Jimmy Stewart being like, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh Did I get it? Did I do it right? Should I see it's a wonderful life? Maybe I'll watch it. They didn't make movies that long back in the day. Sometimes they did, you've seen Citizen Kane? Yeah, I don't know what back in the day is. I'm just assuming it's black and white times. Sometimes between the advent of the ad ad ad ad ad ad ad ad of the tha tha tha tha tha We've got to hang it up.
Starting point is 00:51:48 What a way to end the year? I feel like you're just going to come back next to year. Like it's a new season and they've just recast the lead, the female lead. I just feel like this is Marsha. As we know from that YouTube come in, if anyone's getting recasted this show, it's not me. It's not you! I can't do a show with someone who says, Mommy, pick my boogies. Good night.
Starting point is 00:52:13 Good night. Good night. Katie, what are we doing to the bang in the new year? Okay, we're getting back to our poorly planned and poorly timed space horror movie rockblock. Poorly researched, poorly executed, hilarious. That's what our fucking tagline should be. Actually, I'm going to change it everywhere to that phrase. What was it? Let me write it down.
Starting point is 00:52:40 Poorly researched, poorly executed. Hilarious. Just attribute that to like, poorly executed. Hilarious. Poorly researched, poorly executed, hilarious. Just attribute that to like, Gene Siskel or something. Gene Simmons, I think it would be better. Abraham Lincoln. Oh, no, it's got to be Eleanor Roosevelt. So what movie are we going to do next week?

Don't read it. I don't want to know anything about it. I want to go in totally blind. Yeah, I don't mean a movie where like...Franchise in space? Exactly. Like Chuckie never goes to space, does he? Not that I know of. Okay, because he's got class. Because he gets married later on.
Starting point is 00:54:05 That's so cute. Michael Myers, no space for him? No space for him. Well, we'll find it. No Freddie in space? I feel like Freddy has been to outer space. I'm gonna ask Google, okay? If you don't mind.
Starting point is 00:54:19 Oh, please. Please. Has Freddy Kruger ever been to space? Freddy in space. Freddy Krueger reads, go the fuck to sleep. I don't know what that means. I'm just not even click on it. Welp. No Freddy in space. No Freddy in space. No. No. threat. So yeah, come back for a Hellraiser Bloodline. And then uh...
