Werewolf Ambulance: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast - Episode 275- Lake Bodom (2016)

Episode Date: April 6, 2020

In this week's episode, we pander lightly to our Finnish listeners by reviewing a truly dark film from our Nordic pals: 2016's "Lake Bodom." Special topics for your consideration include: cultural und...erstandings of Finland, the possibility of fun tow truck hijinx, having a visceral reaction to seeing someone drinking from a lake and the script getting flipped and then flipped again and then flipped again and then... Are you into Scandinavian horror? May we suggest Episode 92- "Dead Snow" (Norway), Episode 163- "Let the Right One In" (Sweden) and Episode 260- "Rare Exports" (Finland)? Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey Katie. I mean I'm shitty. Yeah, I'm getting through it. I assume by the time this comes out, things will still not be grand. No, I mean maybe they'll be better. Who knows? Probably not. Probably not. I hope... I hope everyone listening as well and their families are safe and you guys have enough toilet paper. That's a like legit concern right now.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Oh man, you know what I have, a box of baby wipes from Costco, I am not scared about not having the ability to wipe my butt at all. Yeah. It's pretty great. Yeah. Anyway, get a bidet.
Starting point is 00:01:00 I don't know what to tell you. I got one. Thanks for being good listeners to us or just maybe not having a lot of horror movie podcasts to listen to or film review podcasts to listen to, but we appreciate you. And we are pandering to you because we desperately want to be number one in the film review category category to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the film, to, the film, the film, to, the film, to, to, to, to, to, their, of, their, to, to, to, to, to, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, their, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, tip, their, their, the because we desperately want to be number one in the film review category in Finland for just one day. If we hit number one, even for one second, I swear to God I'll lose my fucking mind. It'll be so cool. We were three. We were three. We were three and I almost, I almost cried. Oh, we got as high as three. Yeah. Whoa. I was pretty saked about that. Whoa. I was pretty saked about that. We may have been two at one point. I think we were two behind. We were behind the Bechdelcast, but we were
Starting point is 00:01:52 ahead of pop culture happy hour. And I was like, fuck you NPR. Woo! You're not Finland's national public radio. That's right. Well anyway, when you put it that way. So we're doing the movie Lake Bodum, the Finnish Slatcher movie. Part way through this movie, I realized that I knew the story of the actual Lake Bodum murders from my true crime wanderings. Oh, I see. Do you want me to tell? You got a little grossed out? Grosed out? You mean, like, I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I, like, like, like, like, like, I, like, like, I, like, I, I, like, like, like, I, like, I, like, I th, like, I should like, I should like, I should like, I should like, I should I should like, like, like, like, I should th, I should th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. Oh, the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the actual Lake Bodum case ended was like 20 years later, one of the boyfriends
Starting point is 00:02:46 was arrested and put on trial for the murders. And I think he was acquitted. I'm like 95% sure he was acquitted. But it's kind of weird that they made this movie, I think, in a lot of ways. Sure. It's something I liked about it is that it's, apparently those murders have become folklore in Finland. Yeah. They've basically taken on the like urban legend,
Starting point is 00:03:13 like Hookhan man sort of like vibe to them. Wow. Where the killer is still out there. There's like, there's a metal band called Children of Bodum. There's like all these like it's very referenced in Finnish culture and this would be just a really good job of being I initially thought it was going to be based on the killings. Yeah but it's it's based on the folklore. Yeah yeah for sure. Which I liked. I also thought it was actually kind of
Starting point is 00:03:41 shaming true crime people a little bit too because the true crime kid is the worst. Also I had the years wrong it's 43 years later that he was tried for the for the murder it was in March 2004. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. And yes he was acquitted. That's so weird. Yeah. Anyway let's get into it.. This movie does a lot with like fucking with your concepts of what a slasher movie is going to be. Yeah. So we're initially following Elias and Atta? Ata? Yeah. Athea? Atea? Ate? I don't know. Which are these two like teen boys? Also, why are you in high school with full-on neck tattoos? I, that, Ilius is not a teen boy.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I have so many issues with that. One, two, why are they friends? Like, what do they have to be friends about? He's supposed to be singing for a vegan hardcore band. Yeah. And totally. And the other guy has the same haircut as me. You do not have Kirk Cobain hair. It's growing out and like there's no, I'm either gonna have to cut it myself or I'm gonna look like Kurt Cobain. I don't know what to do. I wish I could pop over and cut your hair. I would let you. I could give you my haircut. Oh wait. I don't have the bone structure for your hair. For sure. I would just be an entire, I would be a nose.
Starting point is 00:05:06 A nose on a neck. I keep threatening to give my beard some civil war general bullshit because I'm just stuck at home and it doesn't matter. What is it with men and facial hair and like making it comedic for a little while? Like, what is that impulse? Oh, right. That, that, that's why you pee in the sh the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th the th the th th th. th. th. th. th. the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is theate is the is on the is on the is on the is on thoes on the. the is on the is on the is on the is on the is the is the is the is the is the is the is th. No is th. No. No. No. No. th. th. th. th. th. th. the is the is the is the is the is the is the. theateateateateat. theat. theat. theat. Noooooooooooooooooooooeses. Noes. Noes. that impulse? Oh, it's because we're children. Oh, right. That, that, that's why you pee in the shower, too, huh?
Starting point is 00:05:32 I'm doing it right now. Also, well, yes, we are recording this episode remotely. So we're following these two chuckleheads as they trick to female students at the high school into going to Lake Bodum, or no, they think they're going to a cabin in the woods to hang out. Right. And they think there's going to be more people there and it's a party. The movie is intentionally vague about all of their relationships, which I think it has
Starting point is 00:06:06 to be, but I do think it's to its detriment because you're just like, are these guys kind of strangers, are they classmates, did they just meet, are they friends? Like, what is happening here? You know? Right, because they want to reveal all that stuff an hour from now. Right, and it's kind of hard to be in that hour where you're like, I I I I like, I I like, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th and I, I, I, I, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the the the thi, the thi, thi, thi, the thi, the the thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th be in that hour where you're like, I don't understand who you are to one another. Yeah, because they take this really long drive out to the woods. What I really liked at the very beginning. So the other Finnish movie we did was, um, why can't I think of it? Rare exports. Rare exports. And that showed us a very specific side of Finland. Yeah, that northern Russian border area, very cold, very trees,
Starting point is 00:06:46 all that, just forest, some people call them. No, just trees. They're almost like, they're almost like clusters of trees. Yeah, just like a bunch of trees together for a while. For like miles, even. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever you might call it. A thicket. A thicket. A really thick it. When we get that first aerial shot as they're leaving the city they live in, and it's just like 40 Clover Leaf Highway that they're going, like it's this huge metropolitan area, it seems. And I really like that, like that little glimpse of like another side of Finnish culture. Yeah, totally. Did you ever read the website Hell Looks when it was a popular thing? It was like a fashion website that was just like looks from Helsinki. It was like one of the more popular fashion
Starting point is 00:07:33 blogs of the like, I don't know why I'm asking you if you've looked at this, it seemed like something you might know as a fashion enthusiast. But it would just be like people with crazy looks on like streetwear in Finland. And that's like, so that is my concept of Finland. So like things like rare exports. I'm like, oh yeah it is actually a rural, weird, you know. Yeah, I think because my, the Finland that I know is Finnish metal. Yeah, which is very much about the snow and being in the woods and being a Viking. Sure. Or one of my favorite bands Fin troll,, th, th, th, th, so th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, so thin, thin, so thin, so thin, so thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th th th th th th th th th, so th, so th, so th, so th, so th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin thin thin thin thin thin thin thin thin thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, th snow and being in the woods and being a Viking. Sure. Or one of my favorite bands Fin Troll where they all pretend to be trolls. Love that. Deeply love that. They're a fun band because they're a Finnish band that sing in Swedish,
Starting point is 00:08:17 because the Finns and Swedes don't like each other, historically. So like they're kind of like fucking with cultural taboos while also being in a band thr-a thin thin thin thin thin thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi of like fucking with cultural taboos while also being in a band that's thing about being trolls and killing Christians. Weird. Metal is a weird world that I very much enjoy. I know that. I do know that. I do. So I want someone once described my taste in metal is metal that heavy metal people don't like. Because Finchroll is umpa metal, it's polka metal. Polka metal. Okay, I'll look into it.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Yeah, no, I know a polka is. Umpa, umpum, bumpa, umpah, ump. So that's my kind of my knowledge of Finland is that stuff. Yeah. Okay, fair. Finland. You are full of mystery. You are an onion of a nation who just keeps unraveling itself. Get us to number one. Beautiful countryside. Love you guys. Also you're also you're also attractive. I'm sorry we're so ugly. Oh my God. I feel like I'm
Starting point is 00:09:28 offending you with my looks. I feel like I could slide right into Finland. Oh yeah. There's like a certain segment of Finland like the cold places. Yeah. They'd be like, what's up Doc? This guy's one of ours. Yeah. Yeah. Finland is also the place where my friends were on tour and they were a straight-edge band and they were playing a bar and one of the guys was like, hey, can I have an orange juice? And a guy rolled up next to him was like, what's in it? Like, it's just orange juice. What the fuck is wrong with you? Which I really appreciate. I like that. So, they drive out to the lake bottom, they don't tell the girls where they are.
Starting point is 00:10:11 When you got out of the car and realize what the fuck had happened, wouldn't you be like, we're going home? Turn it around. Let's go. Yeah. So all of that, the reasons that they don't do that are revealed later too, but while you're watching it, you're just like, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to, thi, to, thi, thi, they, thi, they, thi, they they thi, th revealed later too, but while you're watching it, you're just like, because the true crime Ate is saying weird shit to them, like, the girls are not at all concerned about what he means by let's get started or like talking about why they're, it's important that they're the same weight in size as the victims of the Lake Boda murders. They are not totally weird. And they are not even like touched by this. And you understand why later, but like, in that moment, you're like,
Starting point is 00:10:51 what the fuck is wrong with you? Oh, also, Ida has the worst family ever. Yeah. We forgot to mention that before she leaves town. Yeah. And we've learned that there's some sort of, she's brought some sort of shame to the family. Something terrible has happened to her. I was really worried that it was a sexual assault. That's the kind of vibe I was getting. Yeah, they were setting that up.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Yeah, it was not. We learned later that, uh, an assault for sure someone supposedly took nude pictures of her at a party and distributed them. Yeah. And we also seen like the boys like loading an axe into the car or hatchet. And they're having like a very suspicious conversation where he's like, what did you tell them to get them to come? Like, what was their plan just to hook up? Like, what is, what is the plan? What is their the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their? their their their their their th. tip. tip. tip. tip. tip. tip. tip. tip. tipe. tipe. tipe? No?them to get them to come? What was their plan just to hook up? Like, what is, what is the plan? What is anybody? What are the boys motivations for being there? So I think Elias is there to hook up? Okay. And the other boy is trying to solve the crimes. He wants to set up the exact sort of night as it was when the murders the murders the murders the murders the murders the murders the murders the murders the murders to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to their their their their theycushe. theycushe. theycushe. they. they. they. their their they. they. they. theycooooooooooooooooooooes. the the the their their their their their their the crimes. He wants to set up the exact sort of night as it was when the murders originally happened to try and draw out the murderer. I guess so, but like... That's the Vi-By-By-Got too, but then, I don't know. Like he's not a very well thought out plan.
Starting point is 00:12:27 No, and he, the, Ate is not surprised when there's like, she sees a light across the camp or something like that. Yeah. You think he would be like, well, what is that? He's like, oh, I didn't see anything. I don't know. It doesn't matter. That creeped the shit out of me. Yeah. I don't know why, but just like the idea of like seeing a light that is there and just goes out really quickly.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Yeah. Really, like gave me the, whoa. Right. So if he thought he was going to catch a murder, why would he not be at least brought a net with him? What is he doing? We have like a fucking cartoon dog catcher from the pound puppies. I like to, so they're all like, they get high, I guess they pull out the smallest baggie of weed and everyone gets excited. I know, I would have smoked that weed in one sitting. I'm sorry, I'm a monster. They've been a weed in Finland. I'm sorry. I'm a monster. They've better weed in Finland.
Starting point is 00:13:25 I thought you were going to say sip. That's how I do it. I sip it. I grip and rip it. I sip it and rip it. So they uh, they're all going to go to bed after like Elias and Nora have been in the tent for a while by themselves. Yeah. And alluding to the fact that they may or may not have been... Right. And that's having sex for you kids at home. Oh I thought you meant making out but that's just... I remember now. So when they're getting ready to go to bed, Ida is like, oh I've just got to go bat the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their the t the tent the t their their their they're their they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their. their. their. I. I'm their. I their. I t. I. I t. I. I te. I'm te. I'm just just just just just. I've te. I've just just. I've te. I've. I've. I've te. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm t. I'm. I when they're getting ready to go to bed, Ida is like, oh I've just got to go bathe in the lake real quick. I'll be right back. Is that a thing you do when you go camping?
Starting point is 00:14:13 Just like go off alone and wash yourselves in the lake and the dark at night? No, one of the beautings of going camping is you don't have to bathe in your home. You don't have to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat to bat bat bat bat to bat bat bat to bat bat bat bat to bat bat bat to bat bat bat bat to bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat to bat to bat to bat to bat the the the to bat to bat to bat in your the their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in your their in their in their in the the the the the the the the their in the the the their their their their their th th th th that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that. You don't have to bathe in your home either. I'm just here to tell you that. Yeah, but like it feels like better being stank in the woods. Sure. Back to nature and all that. Yeah, exactly. This is also where I think they were drinking lake water and I was like, can you fucking drink lake water? Probably. I drank lake water before. Oh, where? How are you alive? In Maine? Because they have lakes th. that. that. that th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi the thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to be to be to be the to be to be to be to be to be to be th. th. that, that, that, that, that, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to be to be to be to be to be to be to be th. to be th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to be that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, the that, the that, that, the the that, the that, the that, that, the How are you alive? In Maine, because they have lakes that are unpolluted. That is not a real thing. I don't believe that anywhere in America, I don't believe that any body of water in America is so unpolluted you can drink from it.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I truly don't. Is that real? I'd done it. For, I've done it. And it wasn't a reservoir, it was a straight-up lake. But animals like die in there. Sure. You're fine. I don't... Whatever, that kid looks like a Finnish Harry Potter. This is my retorture.
Starting point is 00:15:15 You may be able to drink out of your lakes, but you still look like Finnish Harry Potter. I'm like mad about this, I don't know why. I've been running like a weird gamut of emotions lately where things are making me feel perhaps not the way they should, but I'm like fucking furious that you've drank out of a lake. I did it with a tin cup too if that makes it any hurts. Oh my god, you are a hobo. I was just riding the rails. Yeah. Took the B&O line out there.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Yeah. Also, night swimming in a lake. Don't do that. What are you doing? Night swimming anywaer. Do not go night, the ocean at night, you psychopath. Don't tell people that. They they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they are they are they are they are they they they they they they they they are they are they they they are they are they are they are they are they are they are they are they are they are they are they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they do not fucking get in the ocean at night, you psychopath! Don't tell people that they listen to you, you're an influencer. I don't want anyone's blood on our hands. So while she's night bathing, she's being peeped on by Elias. Because she goes full on topless for this night bathing. She's to watch them boobs. Also, like, it seems weird to wash your boobs while you're still
Starting point is 00:16:27 wearing jeans. I feel like, because in the waistband of your jeans is just going to get all wet. It's like, really, it's just super impractical. Yeah, I wouldn't think. No. It's almost like she was setting him up to watch her. But like, why did it matter? Because it doesn't matter. I think they were just like, how are we going to get boobs into this movie? We got to get him in here somewhere. Somebody show some titties.
Starting point is 00:17:00 And they go to bed, and they wake up in the middle of the night with Nora like being a little too spoony if you ask me. Oh, I don't think that's that bad. No. No. No. I'm not a huge fan of being touched while I sleep. Oh, I'm a snuggler. You know, I hate intimacy, but I'm a snuggler. So they hear, uh, uh, uh, uh, Ida hears a noise in the middle of the night, wakes up Nora, then she wakes up the guys. And Elias goes out to see what's going on and doesn't come back for a while.
Starting point is 00:17:38 She goes off to pee so, so far away. Right, because he comes back and spooks them all. And then she goes off, like, you just pee next to the tent. The whole first half of this movie is just being like, why are the people doing the things that they're doing? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Until it's revealed why they're doing it. sense, because everyone's actions are so counterintuitive to what you think would happen that you're like, is this just a really bad movie or, you know?
Starting point is 00:18:11 Yeah, but that's also kind of what a, like, I think it's playing with those troops of horror, of like slasher horror movies where everyone does the wrong thing. They always like, they do the dumb thing and that's what all of these people are doing. That's fair. That's like like like like like like like like like like like like like like that's like that's like that's like that's that's that's like that's like th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi into the basement. They always like, they do the dumb thing. And that's what all these people are doing. That's fair. That's true. Yeah. So Elias and Nora are gone for a while and Ate sneaks out or dips out to see what's going on, sticks his head back in and then he is slashed. Yeah. Step, stab, stab. It's just like mouth blood. And so after their tent gets tip tip tip teteeteete tip tip tip tip tip te te. A te. A their their te. their their te. te. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. their their their their their their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Se. S. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. S. Yeah. S. Yeah. S. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. S. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. S. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. S. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Just like mouth blood. Yeah. And so after their tent gets a tree falls on it or something or a big limb, we're all freaking out now because they're being killed just like those teams. Right. Someone yells we need a stretcher and I was like, I hope that's a mistranslation because that's a weird thing to yell right there. But they just leave him there to bleed out while they run.
Starting point is 00:19:07 He tells them to because I was like something is going on like why would that guy tell them to leave him like first of all nobody would do that and he's like a selfish teen you know what I mean like? Mother Teresa would be like carry me on your fucking back I'm dying. Don't leave me here, you know? She would. She would. She was like that. She, uh, old Terry.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Mom, a tear. Um, so they take off running, Elias, Nora and Ida Marie. And we've been told that the girls don't know how to drive, and I was like, if you're going to be in a horror movie, you have to know how to drive drive. It's true. Yeah, this is why I need to teach my daughter to drive a stick because I'm afraid that she'll someday be in a horror in a couple weeks when this lifts. Oh yeah, a couple weeks that's fine. Yeah, she just has like so much trouble pushing the clutch and it's like come on.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I mean that's what they made woodblocks for. Yeah, it's what they made him for. So they go running off Nora Nora trips and sprains her ankle. And then Elias is like, oh, by the way, I know who posted those nude photos of you. Right, and Ate had alluded to it before, before dying, so we don't find out what he actually knows, because he's like, it's more complicated than you think, and then he gets murdered. Right. And then as Elias is trying to tell her,, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, because, th, th, th, th, thi... thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thii. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi and then he gets murdered. Right. And then as Elias is trying to tell her, because he's like, hey, I'm really into you, I think you're really cool.
Starting point is 00:20:51 But Nora has now asked to be left behind too. She just sits down next to a tree with a flashlight and a hatchet, and is like, yeah, on. The game is a foot. What is the game? As someone who has walked a long distance on his sprained ankle, you can do it if you got to. And also like, how were they going to find her again? They couldn't even find her again? They couldn't even find. They're not. They're already lost. Yeah. It was so dumb. Except they don't need to find her again because she runs up and stabs Elias as he's explaining what's going on. He says the line, my heart only beats for you, and then she stabs him right through the heart from the back,
Starting point is 00:21:32 which I thought was a very good death. Yeah. And that's where I have the note, this is not the game I town. So, they had brought these giant suitcases, like rolly suitcases into the woods with them, which is asinine, until you realize they're filled with hazmat suits. Where the fuck did they get body bags? Like can you just buy body bags and can you buy them in Finland? Probably, yeah, yeah, yeah. Why would it? Finland?
Starting point is 00:22:05 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, OK, yeah, yeah. That makes sense, Finland. I don't know. Like, it's so bizarre. Like, so they knew where they were going. They had mapped out where they needed to hide the bodies. Yeah. They weighed the bodies. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:25 They weighed the bodies down. And then they were going to dump the car. Right. Unfortunately, they forgot to take the keys off of Elias. Right. Whops a doozy. So, Ida dives into the water and dives for the body. And fucking goes... it's just insane.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Nora's like, you can do it, you're the school champion. And I was like, the school champion of holding her breath? Like, yeah. This, body, diving for bodies, like. Ida, what are you doing? But this is a really good, I thought it was really good tense scene, because she's diving down there, which is tense, like, trying to hold your breath and search for keys and a dead body is very anxiety-inducing. I'd say so.
Starting point is 00:23:19 And right before she dives down, she again sees the flashlight across the lake. Right. So it's like hmm. There's someone else out there right? So she gets to the bottom she gets the zipper is stuck because of course the zipper is stuck she unzips it she gets the keys she breaks the surface of the water and you think yes Eda this is why you're school champion. This is why you won. The theme from karate kids starts playing. This is why you're school champion. This is why you won. The theme from Karate Kid starts playing.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Yeah. I wish we could sing it. We can't. We're not allowed. Thanks, Spotify. Yeah. Hey, we're on the Guatemalan charts in Spotify. That's something.
Starting point is 00:24:04 If you guys have any Guatemalan horror movies to suggest to us, please, too. We will pander. So, they get into the car, turns out they figured out how to drive. Right. It seemed like they maybe did, maybe did know, maybe did know. Yeah. And so they're driving away and through a very brief argument Nora reveals that she made up the rumor. It does not take much to like get her to crack.
Starting point is 00:24:35 I would take that to the fucking grave. Because if you made that up, you're a fucking monster. Right. Because so Elias has told Ida just before Nora killed him that there actually weren't any pictures. Nobody had ever seen them. The only person that, I mean everybody said they saw them, but the only person that she really like believed it from was Nora. Nora started the rumor.
Starting point is 00:25:03 Because she's in love with Ida. Sure. And who wouldn't be with that cute little button nose? And didn't want to lose her to Elias, Elias. Which is kind of a bummer, it's always kind of a bummer when like the only like overtly queer character in the movie is the person with the worst intentions on her. Yeah, she's kind of not the best. No. No. So they have this like intense argument and they start beating the shit out of each other.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Yeah, because it is like, well then I'm gonna turn you in. And so Nora smashes her in the face with a wrench. Yeah! That's what we call an outsized reaction. And then they get spooked off the highway by a man, or off the small country road, not highway at all, by a man standing in the middle of the road. Yeah, super spooky. As they like crest a hill or come around a turn or something. Yeah. So they wreck the car but not super super badly and it turns out that the guy is a tow truck driver. Yeah. And he's very scary. It gets so scary right now. This part is so scary. Yes. It almost turns into like high tension at this point.
Starting point is 00:26:21 I've never seen that and probably never will. But yeah. It's very creepy and it has this sort like like like like like like like like like like this sort like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like this th. It th. It th. It th. It th. It th. at this point. I've never seen that and probably never will but yeah it's very creepy and it has this sort of like menacey vibe to it. Yeah of this dude. Because he hooks up a toe cable to pull them out of the woods where their car is kind of stuck in a ditch and then proceeds to drive 70 miles an hour with their car attached to his tow truck. You don't see a lot of tow truck horror scenes like that, you know? No, a lot of tow trucks and more movies, but they're not generally doing this, which is, it's very good. No, they normally just tow you to where they're going to kill you. Yeah, right, just in a gentle tow tow tow was funny because Missy was like, oh, I bet that'd be pretty fun. Yeah, except you'd have to steer, which would be so, so scary.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Because otherwise you're going off the road and just smashing into a tree. Right? I just kept thinking, yeah, oh, for sure. Especially because that's what's happened to them. Yeah. Like, just that... Yeah, it is something that I've that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, you that, to to to to to to to to to to to to be to be to be to be to be to to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be, to be to be to be to be, to be to be to be, to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be toe, to be toe, toe, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, toe, too, toe, toe, too, too, toe, toe, toe, too happens to them. Yeah. Like, just that... Yeah, it is something that I've never seen in a movie before, and it's so terrifying that that could happen to you. Yeah, and it goes on for a little while, like, longer than you think it might opt to.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Yeah, it almost turns into like those Duke boys have gotten themselves into a situation again. But then it culminates in like the most brutal car wreck we've seen in a while. Yeah. Yeah. And then him dragging the car upside down down the road. Which he also does for a while. And it's still set to like, if you go on Spotify and look for like a deep focus playlist and it's just some sort of soft melodic music. That's what's playing which is very eerie. Yeah I thought
Starting point is 00:28:10 this this was extremely tense. Yeah. Extremely creepy and like terrifying. Yeah. They start talking about what they're going to do when he eventually the tow cable snaps and they're left in the middle of the road while he's coming back to get them. and Nora wakes up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up the the the the the the the th th th th th th th th th th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I to to to to to to to to to to thi. I'm too on. I'm. I'm too. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. I'll. too. too. too. too. too. too. too. too. too. too. to. th. to. th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I they. I they. I th. I th. I th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm thi. I'm the. I'm to the. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. the. the. the. the. the middle of the road while he's coming back to get them. And Nora wakes up Ida and is like, well, get your knife. And I said I never unpacked my knife. And Nora says, then how did you kill Ate? Yeah. She's like, well, I thought you did. Right. And that I loved that. That made me so happy. Yeah. Like, was that kind of makes me feel bad about their plan though because, and th. And, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, well, thi, well, well, well, well, well, thi, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, get thi, get thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, I've like... Like was... that kind of makes me feel bad about their plan though because wasn't Nora supposed to have killed him? She was. And how did that just come out now? Right.
Starting point is 00:28:58 And like where was Nora while the guy was killing him? Because she should have been there, right? Well, she ran eight miles away to pee. So weird. No, that is a very scary moment where they realize that they're not the only killers in the woods. Yeah, it felt like a real good like the calls coming from inside the house situation. Totally. And then Eda is like impaled on a piece of the car, right? Is it? Yeah. And she's likeailed? Yeah. And she's like, she's like, no, run for it. And I was like, okay, that's basically every character in this movie has said, leave me, which like, no, you would never do. And Nora is chased by a dog. Yeah. You know how much this scares me, the idea of being chased by a dog. It is so scary. I get th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. the th. thi. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the idea of being chased by a dog. It is so scary. I get scared if I see an off-leash dog in the park. Yeah, it's like a goddamn golden retriever.
Starting point is 00:29:50 It was a little less scary because when you first see the dog he has like a bedazzled muzzle. That's so scary. It's so metal. So the, we next cut to the girls dressed in bikinis with hoods on. Have we seen their mouths yet? We don't see their mouths until they take the hoods off. Yeah. And their mouths are glued shut. Oh my God. And that's when I was like, oh my God, Finns. Like, what are you doing? Well, I was like, oh my God, Finns, like what are you doing? Well, I was like, oh, is this going to go hostile? Are we going to go like full like torture porn gross out? The last movie I could think of that we had done where someone's mouth was sealed shut was D. Snider Strangeland. And then I thought about that movie for a long time and just was very, very happy. When the piercing guy goes,
Starting point is 00:30:49 Welcome to My World. Remember how that's the only thing you remember about that movie because you love it so much? It's so stupid. Welcome to My World. Body modification? Body modification. You guys should go watch D. Snyder's Strangeland and then listen to that episode. You're 100% shit. Yeah. Fuck, I just can't stop thinking about it. Now I'm thinking about the helpful cop in that movie, Officer Christian.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Holy shit, I want to listen to that episode now. What a great song. I bet we're really funny at it. So good. So their mouths are glued shut. There is a, the guy puts them into their tent with two other bodies that I assume were Elias and... Finish Harry Potter, yeah, you see the boy. You see the boy, the boy's face. So he's recreating that initial murder. Yeah. Because the girls are in the same, the bikinis
Starting point is 00:31:58 that looked like the bikinis of the girls who were murdered. Yeah. That fucking Até had brought along with him. We're, ugh, yeah. And because they were Elias's mom's bikinis. Like, isn't that weird that she... never mind. It doesn't matter. Don't yuck his mom's yum. No, it's just... Fine. We do real weird role play here.
Starting point is 00:32:24 And there's this like, seemingly violent scene that happened. We do real weird roleplay here. And there's this like seemingly really violent scene that happens. There's a lot of squirishing and squishing and yelling. And just like close up of like bloody faces. But we don't know what's happening. And I thought some real nasty stuff was going down that I was like not stoked on, but it doesn't appear to be what was happening. Because then the next scene is, is that where we see Ida in front of her parents' house? Yeah, just covered in blood sitting in front of her parents' home?
Starting point is 00:32:59 With, and there's like voiceover saying that no one will ever believe you? They, uh, I think the voice is saying that they didn't believe her. Oh, that's what it is. Yeah. And that she just couldn't admit that she had had a mental break or something like that, basically. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, which is like, that's so urban legend. You would be dropped off at home after all of your friends were like murdered and no one ever believe that you didn't do the murder. Yeah, yeah, which is a nice nod to the fact that this is an urban legend I guess. Yeah, yeah,
Starting point is 00:33:31 yeah, and it ends with more teens going down to the lake. Right, a bunch more this time I think right. Yeah, too many. Too many. I was just trying to see the order in which something happened, so I opened up the Wikipedia page for this movie. Can I read you the entire plot section? Oh, please. Yeah. A group of Finnish friends decide to go camping by Lake Bodum to do a reconstruction of the 1960 murders, but something goes wrong. That's the plot on Wikipedia.
Starting point is 00:34:00 I'm going to rewrite it tonight because that is terrible. I was just going to say, how do we talk about that for 35 minutes? I don't know. I don't know. But something went wrong. The end. I think it's definitely a commentary on true crime. I think it's definitely a commentary on true crime. Yeah, I would not describe you as someone who is fixated on true crime? I wouldn't say I'm fixated but I'm interested in. Yeah, I would not describe you as someone who is fixated on true crime.
Starting point is 00:34:28 No, or at least if I was I would never talk about it. You've never told me who your favorite serial killer is. I don't have one. I don't have one. Uh, a zodiac. It's just zodiac, but that's fine, that's fine. Green River Killer all the way. B. T. K. K. The other night I was lying in bed and I was having trouble sleeping because it's just so fucking stressful to be a person right now. And I was like, I think I'm just going to read for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:34:56 And then I like reached on my bed stand and what I had there was a book about the Boston Strangler, and I was like, I'm not gonna help, not gonna fix it, not gonna do it. Katie. I hate myself, yes. I love you. Do you want to move on to the ratings phase? Sure, you want to go first or you want to go second? I'll go first. Okay, do it.
Starting point is 00:35:21 I really enjoyed this movie. Yeah. It's, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll th, I'll th, I'll th. th. th. tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It's, the. It's, the. theat, theat, theat that that that that that that that that that that that that that, that, that, that. I really enjoyed this movie, much more than I thought I was going to. Yeah. It's, it's, um, it's in that sort of like, we've done a bunch of movies that have been kind of fresh takes on serial killers. Yeah. Or not, like Slasher, yeah. It's like the Behind the Mask movie. Scareform. And then, Scriform. Final Girls. I was joking about Screform. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:35:52 We need to do Scream 3 because apparently Courtney Cox has the worst haircut that's ever existed in that movie. I would like to do that very much. But I thought it was really an interesting take on that. I like that do that very much. I thought it was really like an interesting take on that. I like that it's a Finnish movie. Yeah. Because the Finns are amazing people. They make amazing culture.
Starting point is 00:36:12 And I really appreciate what they've done with this genre. I'm going to give this movie an eight and a half. Nice. I also really enjoyed this movie. Though I have to say in that first hour when I couldn't figure out how anybody was interrelated was really hard for me to watch and I think I may have given up on it if it weren't for having to do it for the podcast. And that can also just be like possibly a language barrier too where it's hard to tell the implications of things sometimes like you may not pick up on subtexts because you're not because you're reading the words instead of hearing them in them. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. But the way it ended I was
Starting point is 00:36:51 extremely into and it was definitely like a definitely a like uniquely European experience I feel you know what I mean? There's something so like, I don't know, Scandinavian about the whole thing. You know what I mean? I do, I do. Yeah, it had a very cold vibe to it. Yeah. So I'm gonna give it an eight. I would say you should watch this movie for sure. Yeah, especially if you're a fan of like Friday the 13th movies and that kind of like slasher and even in like even something like a high tension I think you'll still get something out of it because it's very weird and very violent. It's very weird and very violent. Yeah, eight. Mm-hmm. Katie, can I take you to a little place that I like to call, mail bag? Yes, please. Mailbag me.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Have I read the review from Unfrozen Caveman Loser? I don't think so. I love Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. This is, the header to this review is horror and rapporter. Question mark, parenthetical, I'm sorry. Oh gosh, in with a self-deprecation out of the gate. It's in the subject line. It's a five-star review. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:38:22 And it says, long-time listener, first-time reviewer. Again, I have failed. No, you're fine. Everything's fine. This is your success right here. The warmth repartee and commitment of these two hosts transcends the conceit to the point where horror fans and non-horrhans should find plenty to keep subscribing. Oh, they were a glimmer of light when I first started listening six years ago.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Oh my gosh, hi. Are just as much in even more uncertain times. Sorry too close so long to write this. You're 100% fine. If you say you're sorry one more time, I'm gonna come over there and slap you. I really am. That's the way to conjure candy Katie where she comes here else in slapshoo. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm
Starting point is 00:39:05 sorry. I just, I love that review that's super, super kind. I want to just bring up a one little point. Commitment, huh? We have not missed a week. Except when I had that baby baby. Well, yes, except for baby circumstances got in the way. There's just something about that that's like, yes, except for baby-sentence, baby-circumstance has gotten the way. There's just something about that that's like, it's very, it's that line, it's very much to me that line in spinal tap where it's talking about like how hard they rock or whatever, and their punctuality. That's how it feels, and it's very funny and I just really appreciate it. Thank you so much. And you're fine. that that that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very funny that's very funny that's very that's very funny. that's very funny. that's very funny. that's very funny. that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very that's very funny that's very funny that's very funny. that's very funny th th the thi thi thi thi th thi thi thi thi that's very funny. that's very funny. that. Who says bonus I'm not sure I'm not sure where we're going with that but Hold on five stars. Thank you so much Mm-hmm long-time Pittsburgh resident who's been listening since I came back in 2017 just want to point out that the Mausoleum episode led me to find old episodes of Commander USA's Groovy movie for free on YouTube. They were recorded on VHS, commercials included somewhere in the northern New Jersey area during the 80s. Thanks, Alan and Katie. That's the review of our podcast. Thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Mine's 5,000. Also, Alan is spelled wrong. It's your other host. It's my other host. We're not other host. I don't, we're not insulting you. We are just big fans of people spelling Alan's name wrong. You can also just call him Katie's friend if you want. That will also suffice. Thank you, M. Hines, 5,000. I appreciate that. And I'm glad that you're took you to something else that made you happy. For sure. That sounds like a good thing to while you're at work
