It's Lovecraft's comedy piece, which is interesting because this is a comedy film for the most part. My brief history with this film is that when I was 12 years old, as usual, I feel like all my anecdotes about movie, when I was 12 years old. Yeah. So they couldn't get me into the movie of course because I was 12 years old. So they went and saw a tango in cash instead. It's still kind of a win. It was pretty good. It was fun. It was fun. It like really balances out, yeah. But so because of that, and because there was a lot of lore around this movie, about it get in band. You know how that that goes about. So I had a lot of like I was really pumped on this movie and then I think it I must have rented it once I came out on a video. Type. So Reanimator is about some medical students and their quest for glory. Yeah, Herbert West and Dan Kane is played by Freddie Prince Jr. He is not. Is that senior? Do you think it's senior? No, my god. He looks and delivers his lines, like, Freddie Prince Jr. and I know what you did last summer.

Just staring into middle distance. But luckily, we've got Barbara Crampton and Jeffrey Combs right there to bring everything right back up. Who is Jeffrey Combs? That's Herbert? Yeah. They also also also also also also also also had glasses and was shorter. Okay. I felt that was an own choice. Yeah. So they are... They're sort of like same the opposite sides of the same coin in a way so it kind of makes sense they look a little bit the same. Are they? I felt like Dan had no character development. I knew nothing more about him at the end of the end of the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their their their their their their their the end that I did at the beginning. So he's a medical student and he is on fianced to the dean's daughter.

Megan. Who's titties out all the time. Barbara Crampton. Yeah. I love her. He puts up an ad for a roommate and he gets Herbert West and he gets Herbert West who is a creep. He met earlier that day when he was being introduced to the school. Well, you meet Herbert West at the very beginning of the film.

Oh, right. It's a sort of cold. When he's in Switzerland. At a place where they practice medicine, which I'm going to Google that right now to see if that's a word. I meant to do it earlier. All right, it's German for medicine. Fine. See, nailed it. Fine. Yeah, so in film opens up with a woman frantically trying to get into a door and then some official looking dude with a couple cops with them coming and banging on the door.

The cops look like they've never seen anything like this before in their lives. They're surprised that they're police officers. And it cannot fathom that they are doing this. So they get into the room and you see that Herbert West is bent over someone on the floor who we assume to be hair grubber, Dr. Hans Gruber, he's injecting him with something. He's just some some gack from the 90s Nickelodeon era. I love the fluorescent color of that stuff. It's so 80s, it's so beautifully 80s. It's just like this stuff's magic. Yeah. Yeah, it's great. It's fun.

And then he injects Hans Gruber, not to be mistaken. Isn't Hans Gruber, oh you never seen Die Hart, damn it. Yeah, blew it. Alan Rickman's character from Diehard. And he injects him and then Hans Gruber shoots back to life, standing up, his face all fucking crenellated and fucked up, and then his goddame eyes explode and it's the best. It opens on a, it's a very disgusting scene. And also, yes, it is Hans Gruber from Die Hard.

I mean, he's not from Die Hard. That is also the man from Die Hard. It sets the tone for this movie, like right out of the gates. Next we are introduced to Dan Kane as he is trying to revive someone who's suffered a heart attack. And he's so buff and he's so sweaty and his V-neck on his scrubs is so low. And that's basically all you need to know. But he won't give up on the patient even though his instructor is like, came, you have to stop. So they're setting him up as being very much into keeping people alive and very interested in helping folks. As doctors ought to be.

Right, right. So he puts up an ad for a roommate on like a bulletin board, which I guess is like the Craigslist of the 80s. And the person who takes him up on this is Herbert West. At this point, we already know he's fucked. We saw him do this terrible thing. And we met Herbert West earlier when he came to the school, and Dan had taken a body down to the morgue, the body who didn't make it. And Dr. Hill was down there, lazering someone's brain.

you shoot a laser into the brain. That's how you do brain work. Yeah, with lasers. I mean, like, I don't know if you're a doctor, I'm a doctor. Dr. Katie. Dr. Katie says, shoot a laser into their brain. Bring to their fucking, and then stick a Q-tip in after you've shot a laser in their brain. And somehow this will make them obey you. Not how lobotomy's is being introduced to Dr. Hill and he says, I know you, Dr. Hill, I know your work very well. I knew it when it was originally Hans Gruber's and he just like lays into the dude and goes after him,

knives out, gnar-g-gong. So good. I think Jeffrey Combs is just like, he's so good at being a dick in this movie. Yes. Where we've also established that Dr. Dan has a cat, Rufus. Right, and a girlfriend Megan. Yeah, who's the daughter of the dean. And doesn't like to keep her shirt on. Also, throughout the movie people keep threatening Dr. Dan with, like, he'll get expelled if the dean finds out that he's sleeping with his, they're engaged. They're engaged. They're engaged to be married. I don't think her father knows.

Because the whole thing is he has to graduate before they can do anything before they can move forward in their relationship. So I don't think dad knows. They're engaged? Yeah. Yeah, the Dean Hal were audible, I'm sure. Yeah, you know. It's definitely going to the bone zone. Yeah, they're both young and attractive, doctors and love.

Isn't there whole's movies about this? I think there's so many network television shows about this. Isn't this the plot of like every networked television show? I've never seen the si- I and fucking. I guess it's not fucking. They're just making love. Just making love. Just making love. Fuck. Dan and Megan are hanging out and they're talking about how weird her rubest is. And then Megan realizes that Rufus hasn't been around.

Earlier, there's the great sex scene segue where it's a little uncomfortable where Megan, then Dan meet up in a hallway and he starts messing around with her and she goes, no, no, Dan, no, Dan, instant cut to the two of them in bed and her saying, yes, Dan, yes, Dan, they climax. And then Rufus... Do we have to say that on this podcast. Like let's not let's not do this. We don't need to describe that. Well it's important because that's when Rufus runs across dance back. This isn't like chica boom 12 here. Chica boom 12 for not I can say

the dirty details. So yeah, we've moved on and Megan is now wondering where Rufus is because even when they're having sex, Rufus is around. So Rufus is always not like. Shut the door, you don't want them looking at you. Like, so weird. So they go looking for Rufus. And eventually, Megan gets the bright idea to look in the refrigerator in her West bedroom. Where else would you look?

Yeah, looking terrible. Yeah, so looking very terrible, it's such a bad puppet. It looks like it's made out of like a cardboard paper towel roll and some like just fur fabric. It's not good. It's great. Because you don't want to see a real dead cat. So why not make the most 80s. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. th. th. th. th. Yeah. In the now, they would just put a dead cat in there. It kind of looks like the cat from Sabrina the teenage witch has died and stuck in a refrigerator. Wow. Wow, I didn't realize you were a Melissa Johnard. Time, time for secrets. So they accuse Herbert West of having killed the cat. He says, no, he found it dead because it had, um, suffocated. It had gotten its head stuck in a jar?

Cats don't do that. Cats do a lot of things. Oh no, I'll give you the internet. Cats do that a lot. Really? Yeah. Well, my cats just puked on the couch. Yeah. the. Well. Well. Well. the. Well. Sure and also for some reason in that scene every time Dr. Hill is explaining something West like breaks a pencil with a hand? Why? He's try to throw him off his game. It's very silly. Because he then like runs up, he does his own pencils. They don't belong to Dr. Hill. Get a pen, Mr. West. Yeah, that's a really good answer also. But he runs up to yell at Dr. Hill for teaching such a malarkey to the students.

So when he runs up, he like, he like, put these away, but I don't do nothing. It was a really good choice. I like the idea of just putting your hands in your pockets to keep them from like. They keep them from becoming weapons. Yeah. Yeah. So we find out that the cat's been reanimated when Dan's sleeping and is awoken by the screams, the uncatley screams, the uncately screams of a cat screaming in his basement. Dr. Dan is just lured by the siren song of cold hard cash it looked like he handed him about forty dollars so yeah he's a med student paying his way through college sure he's got a loan because we get really deep into Dr. Dan's financials oh man so he goes downstairs and finds that West is like fighting with this reanimated cat. And he grabs a baseball bat and is absolutely willing to hit his recently dead cat. No explanation. He's just swinging at his recently dead cat. Yeah. I could not. It's mind boggling.

It's mind boggling. It's nonsense. But West seems to have a certain charm over him. He seems to... It's so gross. Oh, speaking of gross, we also skip the dinner scene where Dr. Hill makes a toast to Megan, and it's the fucking grossest. He's just like, ugh, muh. I just have the, uh, the toast blust bluck bloast, bloast, bloast, bloast, blue. I blue. I blue. I blue. I blue. I to. I to. I to. I to. I to. the cat is alive again or was alive again they've just killed it again. Right Dan throws it against the wall and part of it explodes. Which I just wouldn't I just didn't believe to be real. Like I don't know. Suspension of disbelief Katie. Right. So West tells him about how he's sort of made this. He shows him one of the glowing green vials and he, and Dr. Dan doesn't believe him, so West brings the cat back to life again. And that made me really upset. Yeah, it was really upsetting. Yeah, it wasn't funny.

No, that's not funny. No, that's not funny. He's really not feeling the reanimated cat. That's when Megan comes in, Barbara Crampton, comes in and catches them and flips out. Yeah, because why shouldn't she? And tells her dad. Yeah. But this is happening, it gets West kicked out of school. And Dr. Dan. Well, Dr. Dan is just suspended, not kicked out.

He's lone guard up, which is the scene is kicking out of school. It's true, because and do this again because Dr. Dan is just now on board. Yeah, which also didn't seem right. It seemed like he should have probably, Dr. Dan seemed like a kind person. It seemed like he should have tried to like get back in on his own merits. Well he's being kind and trying to help out his friend, his new buddy. With this completely immoral andrible experiment. So they go into the morgue and they start fucking with some corpses with a mini tape recorder. No video camera. They'll just prove this reanimation in an audio format. Again I dislike this. I never even thought about that. You really you weren't like oh the sound will be enough?, because I didn't think, because my brain wasn't going, well, this is the thing that needs to be proved.

It's a crazy nonsense, make them up. And Dr. Dan, like I said, he seems like a kind person. It seems like he wouldn't if they can do this and stop the effects of death and bring people back to life, you've done a great service. I just feel like a good doctor would understand that death is inevitable for all of us. He needs to consider the human impact of these experiments.

That's all I'm saying. Well, that movie isn't as fun. No, you're right. So, they managed to reanimate one of the corpses of seemingly a linebacker? This giant enormous man comes up. That guy, it was weird because that guy was all upper body. These little chicken thing, every day was armed day for him. And he just proceeds to kick the shit out of the two of them. Yeah. Yeah. Or is it? What is it? What is called? You got it. Yeah, but, but, but, but they have a name. Shocke, defibrillators. Shocke him, shak him, shak him, shak him. Just a lot of weird, weird upsetting nudity. I've seen a bunch of nudity. Well, there's the one scene where Barbara Cramps is is is is is is is is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is th is a th bunch of this. Well there's the one scene where Barbara Crams is putting your bra on. There's one sexy scene and the rest are all just upsetting scenes. Yeah it's just heightening the upsettingness of the scene. Yeah. So comedy. Not a comedy but has comedic tones to it. I mean Jeffrey Combs delivery of Herbert West is pure comedy. It's pure over-the-top

ridiculousness. He's just silly. So this guy, the corpse that's been reanimated, Dean Halsey is trying to track the two of them down because he knows they're up to no good. And we forgot to mention the security guard that was reading do. Read boudoir, smoke, play cards, and deliver dad jokes. Pardon? Deliver dad jokes? And eat sandwiches. That's literally his job. It's the best fucking job. Yeah. It's pretty great. Yeah. So the Dean Halsey comes into the morgue and the reanimated line backer knocks a door down and starts stomping on Dean Halsey. And security guard seizes and says, I'm calling the cops. Where are the cops? They never show up.

Days past, the cops never show up. None of this has ever reported to the authorities, which I find to be incomprehensible. Yeah. So the linebacker kills Dr. Halsey, beats him to death and then theythey reanimate him because they have the freshest corpse they're going to get on their hands that isn't one they killed themselves. Which he basically did kill him. Yeah. They basically murdered him. So, they reanimate Dr. Halsey and he comes back and he's just gone. He's just gone. crazy and beating the shit out of everybody. Which they should have expected because that's exactly what the upper body guy did too.

And the cat? Yeah, like what? And Dr. Gruber's eyes just exploded. Yeah, we didn't see, yeah. Can you hear Katie rolling her eyes right now? So Dr. Halsey goes and hi. And then Dr. Hill comes in and seemingly just takes him to his office. I got this crazy man in my office, just put him in my office.

Just swap him right there. No repercussions for anybody involved in what's happened. No, yeah. The police never come. So why would anybody care? Yeah. So they put Dr. Halsey in basically like a rubber room yeah with a one-way mirror. Yeah Which Dr. Hill explains to Megan like she's probably never seen one before like Thanks for explaining the mirror. He's also being a creepaholic to her the whole time

Well, yeah, it's like if you need anybody if you're lonely so gross. Yeah, so gross Yeah, this whole movie is so gross. Yeah real quick I do want to mention that the way they took out the linebacker's corpse was putting a bone saw through his heart. Yeah, which is pretty fantastic. And it comes out, you see it happening from behind and then it comes out his front. Yeah, it was a really good effect. Really good special effect. It was getting gross. So yeah, eventually West is doing more experiments in the basement and Dr. Hill comes in and he realized what West has done and like calls him out and it's like you've reanimated this guy I want all of your research or you're going to jail. And West becomes very submissive to him. Yeah. Which I was like why is he doing

this and then he hits him with like a shovel and murder and cuts his head. He's off with the shovel. Yeah he to set off with the head with with the head off with with with with with with with with with with with with with with with the head with the head with the head and the body. I did not understand this. Yes, go on. Did the head? He didn't reanimate both. Yeah, he did. I didn't see that. Yeah, he stuck that he was like opening the chest and reanimating the body.

Oh, I must have been looking at something else. thiii. Hello, phone. Yeah, so he's reanimated both of them and now they work together sometimes like Dr. Hill seemingly can move the body with his mind but then some other times he talks to it Which right well he seems to still be connected to it on somewhat well and dr. Hill He'll escapes by his body knocking out Herbert West. Yeah, and then they both the head body make it make it make their way in? their way, theynigh. Yeah, they, they they they their their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their way, their, their, their, their, their way, their, their, and th their, and th their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. toge is, toge, toge, toge, toge, toge, tipe, thi, thi. their, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. Hill's head in a brownie tray. They go about their business, feeding it blood every once in a while. But yeah, but he also just verbally instructs the body at something. He's like, open the door. Well, like, you were doing all that other stuff with just your mind.

I don't know, whatever. Well, maybe some activities can I don't know. Okay. So then it's revealed that Dr. Hill has given Dr. Halsey a lobotomy and made him his slave because that's what lobotomies do. Well, he's found a special way to lobotomies people. Oh, right, he does say that later. Yeah, with his lasers. There's also a scene that I really, that just bothered me in terms of realism.

Where Dr. Hill has a fake head, it seems it's like a model of a brain of the skull on top of his headless body and the headless body is carrying his own head in a bag. Yeah. And then when the headless body opens the bag he gasps for breath like sir your lungs are not in there. That's the problem you had with this. I have a lot of problems and that's one the main scenes th. There. There. There. There. There. There. There. There. There's like like like like like like like like like like like like like like the th. There's like the th. There's like th. There's like th. It's like th. It's like the th. It's like th. It's like th. It's like th. It's th. It's like, the th. It's like, it's like, it's their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. Yeah. She just wanted to hate him but he's just so hunky. She couldn't do it. So Freddie Prince Jr. So unemotive. He tried. He gave it as all. And he flexed so much. So we're now going to come up to the most upsetting part of the film. I'm actually mad at you about this. I'm mad that you made me watch. I'm sorry. No, I'm mad. I'm trying to apologize for him. That's not how mad works.

Why would you do this? Why do you like this? Come on, fucking guy. I'm not going to give you a chance to answer. I'm just going to berate you. I don't know, because I saw it when I was 12. I don't know, like, like, uh, tuties. No, it wasn't. It was still gross then. So Dr. Hill kidnaps, Megan, their. her father kidnapped him to bring him to which is so upsetting. Yeah. Yeah. Come on.

And her father also strips her naked when she's put on the bed. Very violently. Yeah. Really didn't like it. No. It was upsetting. It sucked. It was a 40 year old me or 41 year now was was pretty let down in the twelve year old me and you know let down in the 80s because. He's just using his, now he's controlling his hands with his brain again. He's just grabbing her boobs and then he licks it. Oh yeah. He like puts the head between her legs and I was just furious. Well the head doesn't make it all the way.

Because the intent is clear. Yeah, the intent is clear. But luckily for all of us, West comes in and stops the situation.. The next thing I have written down just says, oh, and I don't know why. So at this point, Dan Kane and West have gotten Megan free from her bounds

and like have given her a shirt, which I thought was very nice, and they're trying to get away and you realize, and Dr. Hill's like, oh, you can't get away, and then all the corpses in the room animated I was actually a line that I really like Dr. West says I have a plan and Dr. Hill says so do I oh yeah oh yeah they all popped up yeah they all the time then because they were working on his commands and maybe he must have been like guys guys guys get guys get to go yeah it's gonna be awesome that was really fortuitous that what's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the they. they. they. th is th. th. th. th. th. I was was was was was was was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I. I. I. I. I. I. I was. I. I was. I was. I was. I was. pain in it. Peain and boobs and a lot of but yeah a lot of well-defined hamstrings also. Yeah, a lot of well-like, their-like-soi-li-liahahed-like-like-soeahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaheded-soease. thiaiaease. thiaeaseededed-soa-ss. But they're like not really doing much damage. They're kind of just like slapping away at people. Yeah, yeah, grabbing people. They're pretty innocuous as far as damage goes. Oh, Dean Halsey sort of regained some of his former self. It doesn't make any sense. And grabs the head of Dr. Hill and squeezes it until it explodes. But then all the other reanimated corpses start grabbing their heads, right?

Yeah, they started like acting out, like as if they're also connected to what's happening to Dr. Hill's head. I just want a medical explanation for this. This whole movie was like, there's a medical explanation. But that's all you need. You don't need the, like, I don't know. I need a vinegar. But they're just like science and medicine. And I'm in, I don't know.

So Dr. Hill's head gets exploded and the zombies kind of collapsed after that. Except for one. Why? He's the meat thi man? Meatman. Whyman? Meatman. Why? Because he looked like he was made out of meat. He comes and he takes out Megan.

He kills Megan. He jokes her to death. While Dan runs, I don't know, 200 yards down a hallway to get an axe. Yeah, not too fast either. Like, you think you would sprint and also, like, why don't you guys take the the ta in horror movies always get in an elevator? You know the door is gonna take a while to close. Right. So, yeah, Megan gets murdered by the meatman. And there's like a flashback sort of to the previous scene

that we saw of Dr. Dan trying to revive someone taken it too far, and they try to revive Megan and he can't do it. And so he gets the bright idea. It's a sad scene. To get some more of the serum. And the final scene in the movie is fade to black, except for the yellow glow in the dark serum. And then the plunger goes down, and then Megan screams. Why does she scream? Because she come back to life and birth is painful. Yeah, there meanful. Yeah. Oh boy. So that's a re-anivator. And there's a bunch of other ones, right?

Or at least two others? Yeah, there's two others. I have not seen the sequels. I'm not gonna, no. Oh, brother. Yeah, yeah, man. I for theymea. It's been a minute since I've seen. Yeah, I mean, I would have been more on board for this, were it not for that. I just couldn't, when that happened, I was like, I'm fucking done.

Like, I realize that makes me, um, I don't know. A good person? Not a good person, but just, um, stuffy or something. No. I just saw that in. I was infuriated. I was mad that I was watching it.
