Katie. Alan. For the first time in a long time, I'm excited about a movie we're doing. Is it this one? The one we just did? It is this one. Okay, great. You want to tell the people what we're doing?

We're doing Sputnik from 2020. Yeah, a new movie. This movie was picked because Rob asked if we could do it so he could watch it. It would like give him an excuse to watch it and then I ended up just watching it by myself which you know makes me a monster. But not as much of a monster as the monsters in this movie. No you didn't move inside of somebody. No and I also didn't feed humans to a creature. Yeah, who is the real monster in this movie? I think they all are, question mark? Mm-hmm.

Except for that cute little kid. Being an astronaut seems like a living nightmare. Agree or disagree? Oh, it's awful. I would never in a million years. Even when I was a kid I was like, I don't want to go to space. I think I was always attracted to those space travel things that were like, and then we teleported to where we needed to go. And it'd be like, okay, yeah, I'll do that. Yeah, that seems fine. Or like the Starship Enterprise, which is like roomy. Yeah, right. All day long. I didn't know you could parachute from space, which was a note that I took during the beginning of this movie, when it seems like they're parachuting from space. I guess it's an escape pod of some kind. I's a to slow them down as they're coming down to the earth. Oh, so that was like their whole craft. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay.

Yeah, because I think the US ones normally fall in the ocean. With people in them? Yeah, we drop them in the drink. That is not true. Sure. What do Why? Because, so they don't crash land onto the earth, I guess. Who gets them, then? They're in the ocean. Fisherman. Just wait till they wash up. Look who we found. So this is taking place in 1983 in Kazakhstan in the sort of Soviet heyday of space travel, right?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or was the space race, the Soviet hey day of space travel, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or was the space race the Soviet heyday of space travel? Yeah, I think this is supposed to be the like, the waning days of the Soviet totalitarianism as it's like crumbling. Gotcha, yeah, that makes more sense. The sort of thing that it seems like everyone is nostalgic for right now. The crumbling of a totalitarian regime? Well, I feel like not necessarily that, but just like that, that like 80s, like brutalist

architecture, like, boxy automobiles, like, did you watch, um, I was on Amazon, uh, Tales from the Loop? No. It's like this sci-fi show that takes place in sort of a fictitious America that seems like it's Soviet block America. Oh, interesting. And I just think there's a lot of romanticism. There's a lot of like New Wavery type groups now that are coming out of that area that are like based in that sort of brutalist, like all concrete building and whatnot. I feel like that's just a very popular thing right now.

It's interesting, like I, growing up in the late 80s, early 90s, like, seeing the Soviet military still frightens me because I assume they're coming to like take me away. Oh for sure. Yeah, 100%. So beats are scary. That's the bottom line. They were made out to be the boogie man. Yeah, totally. And then in this they really are. They're bad guys. Sure. All of them. Every last goddamn one of them. So they parachute from space and then land in a field. We see the astronauts in the craft being like, what's that out the window? Which is fucking terrifying. Could you hear it like clomping around on the outside of the ship?

It's in space! And the one guy's head's all jacked up. I liked that a lot. I was shocked that he was still alive, actually. I didn't think that his head could go from that to living. It was very weird. Yeah, it seems like if you're going to have him be alive, you can't take like the back of his head or whatever was that they did. And it was also like, maybe not. Maybe not, maybe just don't let him them to let him that th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th that that that that that that that the the the the that that to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th th th to to the to the the the the the the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. to to to to to to to to to to to to to the man die. I do have the note when something was walk around on the ship. I just have a note that says fuck that. Absolutely

fuck that. So then we cut to the the courtroom tribunal of Tatiana Yerevna? You're Yevna. So everybody in this movie calls each other by first and last name all the time? Yeah. Which I kind of love. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Is that just like a eastern block thing? It seems like a Russian thing to do.

Okay, because I thought maybe she was just like a first and last name person. But maybe then it seemed like everybody was a first and last name person. Until inexplicably she's in love with the cosmonaut and t., t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. to to t. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to love to love to to to to to to to to to to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love to love, she's in love with the cosmonaut and he's like, ah, Tatya. I found that I love to be absolutely inexplicable. I also thought that everybody, or at least like three of the main characters in this movie, just looks like Soviet versions of actors I know from other things. Okay, okay. Like, what is his name?

The other doctor, Regiel or whatever. Sure. He is a Soviet Raoul Asparza, who you may not know from Law and Order, but would know from Hannibal. He's like Dr. Chilton, a bad psychiatrist. And the cosmonaut is absolutely a Soviet, Ron Livingston. Ron Livingston, right. And she is a Soviet, I can't remember who I thought she looked like, let me just look at a quick picture, right?

I can't remember who I thought she looked like a Soviet version of, but when it comes to me, I will certainly let you know. A Soviet version of someone I've forgotten. Yep. But she's being brought before the tribunal at the hospital that she works at? I feel like everything in Soviet Russia was just a tribunal. A tribunal in a big room, yeah. With no glasses of water for anybody.

And because she drowned a kid to treat him. Nearly drowned him. She saved him. True, true. She was in the process of drowning, but it saved him and to fix whatever was wrong with him. She sort of like tries to explain it, but I also felt that her explanation of the medicine that she was performing really didn't make a lot of sense. She basically was just yelling, I'm a wild card. Deal with it. And the colonel guy is like a wild card. I like the kind of your gym. Yeah he was looking for a wild

card. So he brings her back to the All Union Scientific Research Institute. I just remembered she's a Soviet AOC. I can see that. Yeah. Anyway. Also, Soviet AOC is my new screen name. Already accused of being a communist. I love that where she's taken is called the All Union Scientific Research Institute. Just throw all the words at it and see what sticks. I wondered if that was a bad translation or if that was like a tongue and cheeky thing.

I do love, is it Cyrillic? Is that the Russian alphabet? Yeah, it's so beautiful, it's so like interesting and so different from ours, you know, you... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, I thi, I thi, I th, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi. Yeah, it's so interesting and so different from ours, you know? Yeah, but it's got that thing of like, almost like an uncanny valley of like, oh, I know that no, I don't, I don't know anything that's happening right now. That M is actually a P and I'm very confused about what's going on. Yep. But yeah, I enjoy that, like, yeah. So the colonel or whatever? Yeah. Comrade, we'll call him the comrade, if that's all right with you. Comrade recruits her to come to Kazakhstan to basically like, I don't even really know

if he tells her at the beginning what she's going there for. He just wants her to have a look at this cosmonaut and see what's going on. Right, he needs a doctor to look at him. Right, to diagnose. And then he gives her a hard boiled egg, like, that's a treat. Oh man, I fucking love a hard boiled egg. I do love a hard boiled egg, too, but it's someone's like, here, have a snack. And you're like, I've been working and getting the cafeteria better. In the meantime, enjoy this luxurious hard boiled egg.

This pocket warm, hard boiled egg that I have for you. And she's like, all right, and cracks it. So when we see the cosmonaut, he's being hypnotized by the doctor I exclusively referred to as Dr. Dickett. He is Dr. Dickhead. And he's like, what did you see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see see that, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what that, what that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that of the ship? And he's like, I saw a blue thing. It was a whale? Dr. Dickett gets so mad about that. And then he says, I'm Robert Duval. And I thought maybe he really did see a whale. Have you ever been to outer space, doctor? And if you're going to be somebody, why not be Robert Duval? Pick Robert Duval. I'm unclear on what kind of doctor he is and what kind of doctor she is, Tatiana. I believe she is some sort of neurosurgeon. Okay. I think that's what Wikipedia told me. She also has a big gnarly scar on her back, but it's never explained to us.

But it kind of is. Because she can walk? Yeah, yeah. But when they were like, look at his feet, then when we see them, they're fine. Uh-huh. Okay. Okay.

There's just a lot of things in this movie that I don't know if they're bad translations or what, but she's like, do you have a room closer to the stairs? I get up early. And I was like, what does that have to do with anything? I think she didn't want to disturb other people when she went out for her nighttime jogs. I see. Because that burglary architecture is really echoing. Yeah, I guess so. I love to run, but I don't think I would run by myself in the dark on a weird military prison base full of inmates doing hard labor.

How about you? They're like, uh, yeah, you're the only person here other than these inmates doing hard labor. And she's like, okay, I'll just go off for a quick jock. Yeah, I'll just a bunch of them there. But I think this movie, the director, handles tension really well. Yeah, particularly for it being your first, this is this directorial debut. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This might be my American jinguist perspective, but I can't imagine, like,

this doesn't seem like it would be an easy movie movie movie make in Russia, you know, at this point in time. No, I don't think so. So she visits with the cosmonaut and basically is like, he has PTSD, send me home. And they're like, okay, a helicopter will be here tomorrow morning and you're like, I'm not getting on that helicopter. There's no helicopter for this lady. So she goes on this run by herself at night and the inmates, one of the inmates like menaces her. And then as she's coming back in, they're like, oh you need to see what's happening with the cosmonaut now. Which is that he has a gross old big barf. It's such a terrible. And it's got like a lot of arms. I love the design of the design of tha tha tha tha th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. tho, thooma' thooma' thooma' thoomom. thoom. thoom. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. It. It's, thea. It's, thea. It's, the the the the the the the the the the the the thea. the thea. thea. thea. thea. the arms. I love the design of this little alien thing. I love that at some points it's almost cute. It has like sort of rounded almost like like mouse

ears as part of its head. But then it has like a whole bunch of eyes and like very sinuey Lance Henrickson arms. Like it's pretty cute but you wouldn't go near it. No unless you're this lady. Now she does she goes right the fuck up to it. I also like that when it opens its mouth, its mouth goes down the entirety of its body. It has a big mouth. I really appreciated that. So we learned that this creature comes out of the cosmonaut every night and then goes back in and is taking up very little space inside his body enough to just give him a little tickle in his throat

and every night it's staying out for a little bit longer, just like staying out a little past curfew. I liked it because I was worried that this was just going to be an alien clone. Yeah. And this was like, oh, okay, you're nodding to what you're drawing from, but then you're kind of changing it enough that it's not just the same old, same old. Yeah, there was clearly a lot of love for movies like Alien and I think even just like monster movies in general. But, and the idea, I don't know, just playing on that I thought was very,

it wasn't anything groundbreaking but it was very interesting to watch. For sure. Yeah. Because I was like, why can't he just leave the room and then it won't go back in? And then this problem will be solved. That's how you separate them. But it turns out that they've become symbiotic. Yeah. When the creatures ccreature ccreatreter ccreatre-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-I creature creat threat threat threat threat threat threat, threat, threat, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. thi. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Yeah, th. th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. th. th. Yeah, th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. the. But when he came back, he was able to recover from his injury really quickly.

I really like that aspect of it. I like that it anesthesizes him, so he can't feel this big slug dropping out of him every night. Oh God. And then like every time you see him and he's just like, alashing gray when he's laying there with his mouth open. It's horrible. Yeah, yeah, it's really spooky. Yeah. So she asks them what it eats and they're like, ah, it eats what he eats. And she's like, okay? Does it? Doesn't though, does it? No, they're feeding it prisoners. Yeah. And I thought, you know, like, why are you putting the prisoner so far away from the monster so that it's like leaving a slime trail everywhere and someone has to clean that up? But they do it because the monster inspires fear in the victim and then it tastes better for

the monster. It's like thriving on cortisol. Right. Which I thought was pretty interesting too. Oh, for sure. For sure. It's like thriving on cortisol. Right. Which I thought was pretty interesting too. Oh, for sure. For sure. Yeah.

All the while they're telling us that this cosmonaut is a national hero and I just kept thinking like, what is heroic about space travel? I mean, you're traveling to space that's pretty heroic, right? What's no, what's heroic about it? You could be blown up at any moment during it. Why, you're not like, I don't know, maybe we are advancing the cause of humanity out there, but like, I don't know, it just seems like rich people

are going to the moon or something. Is it like 55 weight to money ratio that like every pound cost this amount of like outrageous amount of money. Wow. So like yeah, heroes, thanks for paving that way. But it's still like, granted this is unmanned, but like, you know, when like, uh, the Cassini probe was like crashing into Mars, that was fucking a, we're on Mars. We have stuff on Mars. That's crazy. We're just shooting our trash up there, though. We like, shoot it up there and abandon it.

No, just because Elon Musk shot a car into space. Did he? I didn't even know that? But he has to stay in a room that isn't this room because you're making him miserable. Yeah, so they put him in like an actual room and they're like, oh, good idea. And I love when he fucking MacGyvers a TV antenna out of like the wires that the curtains the curtains are hung on. Yeah, I like that's the Russian government lying about him. Yeah, I like that fake news segment about the landing a lot.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so everyone just thinks he's okay and is just adapting and we'll be out soon, but like he is decidedly not okay and his friend is dead. Yeah. And I mean, the disinformation campaigns that the Russian government or the Soviet government ran were just like nuts. Yeah. So like, yeah, playing on that was pretty neat. Yeah. Meanwhile, we've learned, he has told us, he has told his friend at the beginning that he had to go to Rostav for business. He has some business there.

But somehow Tatiana finds out about his son in an orphanage, but I don't know how. I think they had information on him. Like when in his file, it mentions it. That he had a son that he didn't know about prior to like a month before he left for space times. Right, so the kids in an orphanage because his mother has died, he's like seven. And so she gets in there and starts accusing him of being like a terrible person to raise his stress levels and see what happens, which seems like a shitty test because I didn't seem like they had a baseline. So whatever. Listen, she's a wild card Katie. All right, you're not going to control Tatiana. She's a very impulsive doctor, which is not something you generally want in a doctor, but okay.

So she like sort of starts like sweet-talking the monster, and I, for like one brief moment, was like, maybe she is going to marry the cosmonaut, and they're going to go get the little boy, and they're going to raise the creature as like a weird little family. I would watch the fuck out of that movie. Clearly. I like that we keep seeing this, what we assume is his little boy trying to steal shoes at an orphanage or steal something in a wheelchair. Yeah. I'm very, I'm still very confused about that. Why was that child in a wheelchair? She had some problem with her spine when she was a baby.

Yeah. And that's why she had to have the big scar surgery. that's why she had to have the scars. All she needed was shoes and they were there and they just wouldn't give her the shoes at the end. They just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they just wouldn't their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their they just wouldn't they just wouldn't they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they their. their th. I th the. I the. I the. I the. I the. I the the the the the the the the the the the the ththat she had some sort of surgery afterwards, and that's why she could walk now. But she just, no, they give her the shoes at the end. She puts them on, she gets up and walks away. It's true. So I don't know about that.

But so she's like, no, raise the glass. Let me touch the space suit. We have laying around. Yeah, she puts on a space suit. They're like, this will protect you. It does not. I wanted to be like, you remember when these guys were attacked, wearing space suits? Yeah. Did you see the other guy's head?

Because I did, and it looked bad. It looked like a car drove out of his head. It's horrible. She gives it a little toy and it like wraps its long arms around the toy and didn't you feel kind of sad for it for a minute? Oh yeah, when it like curls up around it? It was so sweet. It's so heartbreaking for some reason. Yeah, no, I am at this point. I completely love this monster. Yeah. Except for it's murdering of prisoners thing. But then I liked the turn of like testing her morality,

where she calls the colonel out on murdering people. And he's like, okay, the guy that we killed last night, here's his record. Here's his file. He raped and murdered a 12-year-old. What the fuck? He's not a human. .. He's not a human? He's something person. She's like, who are the monsters? Yeah. Well, it's still you though. More than one person can be a monster. It turns out it's all of us, sir. Yeah. I did love the scene of it, like slithering down the

lightly lit chain-length fence area to eat the prisoner. And the prisoner just like,. I actually really loved that. I loved it when it was in the infrared and you just see like the spray of blood come out of the prisoner's head. I was like, you know, this is dope. There's some very good gore in this movie. It really is. But also like I just kept thinking like maybe it wouldn't have a taste for people if you don't feed it people, you know? Well they tried feeding it mice. No, it liked it, it just wasn't effective enough, it seemed like. Oh, that's just like a hard boiled egg. Can I please have something better? The monster's like, this cafeteria sucks. Can you bring me a hard boiled egg?

So she like decides she's in love with a cosmonaut, which I don't understand at all, because he seems like a total prick. Yeah, but he's like a hunky Soviet Ron Livingston. And he's a national hero, so I guess that's something. So she takes him out for a run, which is also crazy because she's been attacked in the leg by that giant monster and there was blood fucking everywhere the night before. Her run is just limp, plump, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi's thi's like, thi's like, thii's like, thi's like, thi's like, thi before. And her run is just limp, plump, limp, lump, limp, lump. And does he ask her about that? No. No, he doesn't.

No, he doesn't. Well, we found out that he can see everything that the monster is doing. Totally, but he's pretending he can't. you might want to ask what happened. He just tells her she looks good in sports, the,, and she's like, all right, let's do this. Yeah, that's what seals it for. Also, I am only referring to like running clothes as sports clothes from now on. Please.

Oh, don't forget that in the beginning, the co-pilot of the cosmonaut was singing some song about millions and millions of scarlet roses. Yeah. And then he was singing that song. The gore is so good in this. It's so good. It's almost understated in its beauty. That was just some nice, delicate gore that you gave me there. It's just a little, like a taste of horrible, horrible things. But also, like after he rips the comrade's head off, it then goes like on top of their jeep and it's like standing there wagging its tail in like this agitated manner staring at the other troops.

Yeah. And then it just crawls back in there, which is horrible, horrible to watch. I like that they didn't show it. They were just like show her to head turn to the side, not watching it climb back inside of him. But you hear the sound, which is exactly what it sound, what you would imagine a human-sized monster crawling down your throat would sound like.
