You've never seen the Exorcist. What? No. This is only the first time I've ever seen this movie the whole way through. Oh nice. Yeah. I saw it once on cable and I think I fell asleep before it was over. So that was the first time I'd ever actually seen a nightmare on Elm Street. But... Yeah. I'm very familiar with the Freddie Krueuger Canon because there was a period in the late 90s, like probably around 98 or so, where West Craven's New Nightmare was on like USA Network all the time.

Fuck sake. You know where Heather Langan Camp and Robert England plays Robert England, and that kid, the boys have a penis, girls have a vagina kid from kindergarten cop and place her son and I watched it like nonstop on cable so that is like my my touchstone to Freddy Kruger and if you want to kick me off this podcast right now I will go and you can just bring up the dog and she can do the rest of this podcast not at all that. Not at all but later we could talk about my feelings about meta West Craven and how he got all fucking meta

Okay. And I liked it way better this time did it. Did you? I think we have a lot to discuss here. Sure. Where did you have an idea of where you wanted to start? Other than just talking about how amazing John Saxon's comb over? That was pretty much what we talked

about during the movie. I love John Saxon so much. He plays the cop, Nancy's father. Lieutenant. the the the the the the the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the to the to to the the the the the the the the cop, Nancy's father. Lieutenant Don Thompson. Don Thompson, Lieutenant. What did you talk about John Saxon? It's stalwart of 70s exploitation cinema. I think he's in Black Christmas, he's in, he's in Tenabre, he's in a ton of movies. He's in, he's in, he's in Tenabre, he's in a ton of movies. I think he's an incredible actor for what he does. He does the sneering and then he'll do like the side eye take to the camera like, well, it's this guy doing. I felt, he was like, Ferris Buellering this movie. Yeah, I think Nancy is her life. Yeah.

And she's Heather Langan Camp and New Nightmare. Right. Heather Langan Camp as Heather Langan Camp. Robert Englin is Freddie. Making a career of Freddy also pretty much, yeah. Well, I knew him before this movie because he was in the V miniseries. Oh. So like, and I've loved that mini series when I was a kid and don't, do not go back and revisit that. It is terrible.

I can't revisit, I've never visited. Sure. And I don't think I probably ever will. Well, I wanted to point that out. You were born the year this movie came out. Yeah, this, this, we are doing it came out November 9th, 1984. It and I are celebrating 30th birthdays this year. So I'm about to be 31.

So you sort of always existed in a Fredied universe. I had about 11 months of Freddie Free Life. Right. So that's, yeah, I mean, and I am eternal, so I've always been here. Yeah. So you said we had a lot to unpack. You know what I would like to start off with is the character of Rod. Oh, yeah, yeah.

Because Rod, like, seemed to have wandered in off the set of Westside story and nobody told him. Or Greece. Yeah, like nobody told him that this wasn't the movie he was acting in. He sleeps in a leather jacket. He pulls a switchblade. And like, I don't, he's a jet or a shark. I don't know, I've never seen West Side story, but he's one of them. It can be either.

Yeah, that gets him. Well, no, no, no. You're focusing on Rott. I'm focusing on Rott. Oh, come on. Just say, poor Rod. They like, they just, they were like, let's get every stereotype of a his... Yeah, they definitely said he'd been arrested for I think drugs and brawling. Brawling! Yeah, he was in, he was from the 50s. He just showed up with the 50s in this movie.

Who is the director of such classics as Last House on the Left, the Hills Have Eyes, a swamp thing, people under the stairs, a personal favorite of mine that not a lot of people have seen Deadly Friend where, what is it, Christy Swanson, the woman who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Yeah, she's in it and she blows Mama from, throw Mama from the trains. She blows her head up with a basketball and it's fucking amazing. That sounds amazing. Deadly Friend, it's a really good movie, check it out. I love people under the stairs as well. Yeah, I like it because it looks like Skid Row lives under the stairs. I mean he's also the director of all of those meta-horr films like, ooh, what if a horror film got broken down, it wasn't a horror film, but now it's a horror film. Fucking bullshit things that happened in the 90s in the early 2000s. You guys are really going to love our screaming for half an hour. Yeah you should download that one. Yeah. when I was a kid, like they totally like, he'll say if I scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Yeah. And I just, yeah, so like, watching this tonight,

watching a nightmare on the tomorrow really like, maybe revisit those feelings and just, you know, it's kind of like, oh, I'll make a musical comparison. It's kind of like, when I was a kid, Metallica meant the world to me. But the Metallica that exists now is a gross thing and disgusting. And I just, I have to separate the two. So tonight was kind of me doing that with, with West Craven and it being real. You know, at one point he had a master's of puppets. Yeah, and now, now he makes load.

Now he has saint anger or whatever. Stanger. Yeah I can see that. I mean this, yeah, for sure, this era of movie too, I feel really conditioned me to expect a certain kind of horror movie, which is to say like very little plot and very little like exposition of anything. Like it's really just like run around violence like there's literally one scene of exposition and it's just Nancy's drunk mom being like we we burn that man because he was a bad guy and they like don't even explain the end and that's it the movie ends like right and that's the kind of horror movie I want to see well I I a personal favorite like sub-sub

genre of horror film is the kind of horror movie I want to see. Well, I, a personal favorite like sub-genre of horror film is the like Dream Logic Horror film. Yeah. Like Fantasm. Yeah, and Speria and almost every Fulchee movie like, yeah. Just like, oh, this is a nightmare. You're just watching a nightmare. So stop asking questions.

So like they, the studios at the time were like, and I'm sure they probably still do this today, they want a happy ending in a movie. They want to be able to say, oh no, everything's good. So, but that was scrapped in for the ending that we have now in the movie. Which is nonsense. Yeah, but you're supposed to assume to assume to In the end, everyone's dead. but uh. So Rod's a silly character. There, everyone in this movie is a fairly silly character, probably with the exception of Nancy. Right. They're all just. No, Johnny Depp's pretty good. Glenn's a pretty good character. Glenn. So much. My grandmother is 90 years old and she is in very good health and she rules. And Katie's a huge fan of her grandmother. I am. She raised me and she kicks ass. But she is just fucking in love with Johnny Depp. And she just keeps saying like, when you're 90, like I guess you're thinking about your own mortality a lot because she keeps talking about like how she's gonna die soon but she keeps saying like I just have to

stay alive to see like the next Johnny Depp movie and the next Johnny Depp and like luckily for us Johnny Depp puts on a new movie like every 45 fucking minutes so what is the try and what is the trivian. Which is awesome. So, yeah, him and his weird side pipe are really good in this movie. Yeah, there's definitely a dick shot of Johnny Depp's. And I'm like half tempted to take do you want to see like a teenage Shawnee Depp's weiner? Well, it's through his jeans. It's through his jeans. I think she'll still appreciate it. Sure, why not? I showed her like how I could look him up on Google image search on my phone and she was like,

For me, I'd like to do a bit of research as we're gearing up to do these films and stitches, stitches left me with nothing. Yeah, I wasn't much for the look up. But a night where an Elm Street, of course, is making up for this and by the spoonful it's so good like there's so much info out there. I just spent a long time even just on the Wikipedia page. So just a few facts. The movie was made for 1.8 million. It made, what did it make?

What did it make? It just totally crushed it like it knocked it out. And this was the first film for New Line Cinema. Yeah, a couple of studios passed on this movie? Yeah, they had a really hard time. Oh, did I do research too? Oh shit. It was an accident. I was reading about how it was a 30th anniversary. Sorry, carry on. No, no, no, no, no, no. It's fine. David Warner was originally cast to play of Freddie. Have you seen the Omen? Yes. He is the reporter in the Omen. Oh. He's Satan or the devil in Time Bandits. He's a so it would have been like a really different characterization. Yeah, yeah. It would have been really interesting to see his take. Some other stuff. The dream idea, the idea of people dying in their dreams came from newspaper articles that West Craven read in the 70s about refugees coming to the US from Cambodia. They were Kameer refugees and they were having these awful nightmares that was keeping them from sleeping because I didn't want to sleep they're having terrible nightmares of US bombings and all this stuff. Oh wow. And then eventually some of them started to die in their sleep. And the medical authorities at the time came up with the time to to to to to to to to to to to to the US. the US. the US the US the US. the US. the US. the US. the US. the US. Oh the US US. You know what I mean? I thought that first scene when his arms are real stretched out and then like a, what's it called, a thing outside of a used car dealership or waving in the wind? Yeah, which is, it actually was cool.

But then they show him J-singer and you're like, oh and suddenly you're a tiny little man. Well, that's one thing that I was thinking about, and I often think about when I watch movies that are supposed to be set in like dreamscapes are never fully fleshed out. So like if I'm, you know, my memories of a dream, if I'm looking at a wall, that wall is maybe like four feet of space and then kind of like fog all around it. So like it being like set in such stark reality,

most of the time of the boiler room and all that stuff. So the little things like the girls standing in the puddle of snakes or Freddy being tiny and running in like a grotto-Marxie kind of way at her. So that kind of stuff I think lends itself to that dream logic, but it also looks absurd if you're not hyper analyzing it. Yeah, you know what I mean? It sort of falls apart if you're not paying that close of attention to it, which nobody was. People that are going to the movie just wanted to see the man with the scary knife hands.

Right, me too. Right, sure. Yeah. Yeah. Scary nightgames, man. Um, and they are pretty scary. To be fair. Yeah.

Especially when he cuts his finger off in that first scene. I think that's a really nice touch the first time you see him. Right. Except that he goes, I wish that he wouldn't, you're right that he talks too much much because he goes, hey, look at this. And then he cuts his finger off like, just look at her and cut your finger off. That's so much more effective. Hey, Nancy. Yeah. Michael Myersness in this movie doesn't even compare to what's going to happen down the road when he's just like, fucking Shecky Greenwood getting up there. Is this thing on? You know, like, it's, it gets terrible after a while. But from what I remember, two is not good. That seems to be the consensus of the Amazon box set that I bought on Amazon Prime for $8.

You can get one through four on Amazon Prime, eight bucks. Which is how we watch this tonight? Yes, the sound is terrible. Sound probably not so good. Yeah, don't buy it. You get what you pay for with this one, folks. The disparity between the talking and the action sequence is the light year years volume wise. And the double dragon score is also very loud. But I remember, yeah, Dream Warriors, three being good.

But I don't remember if I just think that because Dawkin had a song on the soundtrack that I was really stoked on. I bet that's probably it. John Hughes, Light, and who's not is not really what you're going for. Let's go through the death scenes real quick. Yeah, there's not, I mean there's only three deaths in this movie, am I right? Unless you count.

Four. It's a pretty low body count for a horror movie, really, really, but other than Rob's death, I think they're really good. Yeah, you don't like Rod's death? Yeah, because you're seeing it from like Rod's perspective, yeah. And so when she's, she's just being cut open, yeah. And you're not seeing what's doing the cutting, it's, it reminded me of like an

That's just a middleteenage girl. Yeah, yeah. There's a lot of that. There's a lot of thighs in this movie. All right, so we're on to, so Johnny Depp, Glenn's Deetson. Yes. He's wearing a midriff bearing t-shirt. Also not a thing I don't think teenage boys do. Oh no, that shit. So he's watching the Miss Newed America, listening to generic instrumental rock music.

With headphones labeled with his name, with a label maker. Well, so he's watching this, he falls asleep, and then Freddie gets him and just sucks him into the bed. Yeah. And then all the blood from evil dead comes pouring out of the bed. Yeah. Or like the shining. Yeah. But it was great because again they utilized the the spinning room so they were able to turn it upside down and just pour the blood out of the bed which gave it this great effect of spreading on the ceiling and it became really, again, disorienting. The th, and th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thin thin thin thin, thin thin, thin th thin, thin, thin, thin, th then thin, thin, th then the, the, the, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, the, the, the, the the the the the the the the the from the from the from the from the from th really again disorienting and the thing I really liked about that was there was a light fixture on the ceiling that was like one of those square ones that kind of hangs above or hangs below a light bulb and it was like being rocked by

the force of blood on it I thought it was a really nice effect I even liked it though when the blood was running out and it was just kind of like these the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It was like, th. It was like, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the th. was like, the the th. was like, the the th. was like, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. I even liked it though when the blood was running out and it was just kind of like these rivulets coming down. Yeah. It was lovely. It looks beautiful. It was lovely. I think there's a you know you either have a repulsion or an attraction to blood. Yeah. Right then I was having a pretty strong attraction to it. It's really it's really embarrassing actually when you yeah I think their their their their their their their th. It was th. It was their th. It was th. It was their th. It was th. It was the th. Um, so then the last death scene is near the end of the movie. Nancy has set Freddy on fire and he's stomping all over the house. This is so silly. So silly. And they finally find him and he's... don't know what he's doing to her mom. Yeah. Hugging and drunk mom. And John Saxon Dad puts him out with a blanket, takes the blanket off, and skeleton mom is floating in space where the bed used to be? Blue light fog space?

And John Saxon and Heather Legging Camper just staring at her like, oh, uh, what? What's your drink, ma'am? Well, there's, that's what she does now, and then she sinks in then, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed be be be be be be the bed, and the bed, and the bed be the bed, and the bed, and then she sinks in the end, and the bed becomes whole again. And that's sort of the end of it. But it was a cool looking effect. It looked neat. Yeah.

I didn't know what was happening, but it looked neat. I don't think you're supposed to know. It's like, eh, you know. So they die. So they die. Yeah, and then there's sort of a Freddy death scene where she decides that he's not real and tells him as much. I wanted to like talk about that. Johnny Depp didn't think he was real either. And he didn't tell him.

What? She told him to his face. So it was really a self-esteem issue for Freddy like he was like because she goes your shit and then he turned into blue glitter and disappeared so it was really he just needed to be told that he was like someone said to tell him he was human garbage go oh man I am shit you've confirmed how I feel I'm a like you're a child murder she didn't also like the plausibility of like not knowing that when you you were a child that 20 children in your neighborhood were murdered By your parents no that he murdered 20 children
