Episode Date: March 25, 2024

In this week's episode, we are back to the well of one of our mainstay directors, David Cronenberg, with the 1981 film "Scanners." Now we know what it's like to be let down by a friend, hoo boy. Other... topics for your consideration include: Michael Ironside doing the heavy lifting, dudes talking, various brands of margarine, more dudes talking, Dr. Ruth's legacy, not being able to tell apart the dudes that just keep talking, and the use of AI in the production of this podcast. We just covered another Cronenberg film recently: Episode 456- "Rabid." Catch his other movies in Episode 88- "Shivers," Episode 103- "The Fly," Episode 177- "The Brood," and Episode 442- "Videodrome."  The regular lineup of links! Starting point is 00:00:00 Alan, Kitty. Could I get a breaking news update? Did I get a breaking news update? But did it, did tip, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. This is... This is Savinii Watch, 2K24. 2K, 2K, 2K Watch 2K24. 2K24. I cannot believe we've been doing this for like 10 years. We are menaces.
Starting point is 00:00:35 10 years. Woo! Woo! I have not seen Tom Savini. But he got his house painted. Oh! What? What color? What What? What? What color? What color?
Starting point is 00:00:48 Guess. Yes. Now here's the thing. What do you find in his trash can, Stalker? This is why it's funny. Because in our neighborhood, if your house is not a row house that's connected, then you have a very, very small breezeway between your house and the next one. I mean, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the thu thate. thate and thate the the the the. the. the. thoomoomoomoomate. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the, the, the, the, the, the and to to to to to to to to to toean toean toean toean. toean. toean. toean. to ta. tome. t's connected, then you have a very, very small breezeway between your house and the next one. I mean, just big enough to fit an outside trash can and I've been in your breezeway. It's very narrow. Yeah, yeah. He only painted the front of his house. Yeah, fuck that shit. You can see the former color on either side of the breezeway, and I'm very happy about it. I think painters were just like, we're not the paint, I'm th. th. th. th. th. th. th. think, I think, I think, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thin, I thi, thin, I thi, I'm thi, I'm thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I'm th. th. th. th. Yeah, I've th. Yeah, I've th. Yeah, I've th. Yeah, I've th. Yeah, I've th. th. th. th. th. th. thin, I'm thin, I'm thin, I'm thin, thin, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi. thi, were just like, we're not going in there. Not going in your pain cave. Yeah. So he got the front of his house painted and it looks silly.
Starting point is 00:01:31 How dare you? I mean, he doesn't listen to this show. He doesn't do podcasts. Tom, I think it looks great. Mr. Savini. Big tea. Sorry I'm your neighbor. Brady. Alan. I have some breaking news for you. Oh, do I need to do the... No, you already did it. I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it. I can't... I'm the master scatter on this podcast. It's true. I am not a scatter. We had an email message from a listener, and I would like to read this message because it leads to people being able to donate to a charity that they are asking people to donate to and I would like people to donate to this charity. Get your motherfucking wallets out. Get I'm out, get on your papals. Yes you're your v. Moes? Your papals? Your chaps? Your chaps? Your vemos? Your poeux? Your poe. Cushap? Sure. Your zels. Starting point is 00:02:27 Go to a check cashing place. Yeah. There's one not far from Tom Savinia's house. It's like across the street and two buildings up. It's not great. Not great. They say hello Katie and Alan. Hello. Faith. Hello Faith. the. I hope you were doing well. I just wanted to say I've been listening for years. And you never fail to make me laugh when I'm having a bad day. Oh, I'm glad. So you had a bad day. Oh, no. I don't know why I went to Vedder on that.
Starting point is 00:02:59 It's all white man singing, which is just Eddie Vedder voice. That's why all white men love Pearl Jam. What do you mean, Katie? Don't call me white man. I gotta do it. I seem to recognize your breath. I host a UK-based podcast called Slumber Party Monsters. Fantastic name. And I'm hosting a fundraiser for the only charity in the UK that funds research and
Starting point is 00:03:28 helps with education for reproductive and gynecological health. Okay. The charity is called Well-Being of Women. You can't be mad at that. You can't be against that. You're against that. You're against that. You ain't no friend of ours. No. They also help. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to th. to thi. to to to thi. thi. to to thi. thi. thi. thi. the the the the. the. thoe. the thoom. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toea.ea.ea.ea.ea.ea.ea. toea. toea. toea. toe. th help non-binary intersex and trans men too. Okay. I hope you're doing great. Could you please mention the fundraiser and
Starting point is 00:03:53 maybe share the link for it below in the email that I'm reading not below in this audio format. Sure. I wanted to host a fundraiser to help spread awareness and celebrate International Women's Day this month. We missed it, we might have missed that one by a little bit. But I was out drinking at Cobra on that night and it was really fun. I met all these women who were out celebrating International Women's Day, which I had did not expect at all. There's this group of gorgeous Italian women women celebrating International Women's day at Cobra. It was so weird and fun. Did you all have like a shot for Mrs. Roosevelt? No. Famous women in history. Just smoke, he outside smoking weed for Eleanor Roosevelt. So I will now tell you the link that you can go to and I will also post this on our social meets. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:40 The link is Just Giving.com slash slash page slash slumber party pod. Slumber party pod. Just giving dot com slash page slash slumber party pod. Get out there and give him some money. Yeah, get throw him a couple bucks. Do the right thing. Do the right thing for once in your life. You guys are doing great. No, don't listen to me. I'm terrible. I'm a bad person. What Katie's doing is called negging. I think it works though. It seems to work for mediocre men.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Go get him some fucking money, you cowards. Okay, so now what Alan's doing is being really aggressive and actually kind of frightening me. I sounded like sloucho man Randy Savage. It was a little bit Satcho man Randy Savage. It was a little bit, macho man Randy Savage, a little bit Sergeant Slaughter. Yeah, perfect, really. Yeah. RIP, I guess. Both of them, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. I think Sergeant Slaughter's dead. He's got to be dead. That man can't be alive. Oh, and uh, RIP to M. M. M. at Walsh, who passed away the day that we are recording this. Who's that?
Starting point is 00:05:47 He's in a ton of movies. He was in Blade Runner. He was most recently in the Righteous Gemstones, if you watch that. Oh, if you watch that. Sorry to hear that. He's like, yeah, 100%. He's one of those guys that show up and I'm th. A movie can't be bad if M.M. at Walsh or Harry Dean Stanton are in it. Okay, fair enough. And I was like, yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:06:06 He's one of those guys that you're up and I'm like, fuck yeah, M. M. at Walsh is here. He's here. I'd like to print a retraction, please. Sergeant Slaughter. And I'm proud to be anell you something. Can't be mad at that. Robert Rudolph R. Triple R? Triple R. I was always team iron-cheek.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Wow. Well, you took the wrong side in the Gulf War. I'm just saying, like, the bad guys are always cooler. The heels are always cooler. Oh yeah. If I were to be a pro wrestler. Yeah. And I'm way too old and I've had way
Starting point is 00:06:45 too many head injuries. I would totally love to be a heel. Yeah. I would love you as a comedy to boo me. I would love you as a comedy wrestler where you came out and just like try to bounce off the ropes and I just hit them and went, oh, would be the end of my wrestling career. I would actually love you as a comedy. I'm to to to to to to to to to to to to to the their. I to to be. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I would, I would, I would, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'd to be to be a to be the tot, I'd to be a to be a tot, I'd, I'd the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to be to be t. I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll tot. I'll tot, I'll tot. I'll tot. I'll tot. I'll totally. I'll totally. I'll, totally. I'll, totally. I'll, totally. totally. totally. I'd totally. I'd totally totally huge game and there's all this hype and then you came out and did that and grabbed your ribs and just stumbled back to the locker room and no one ever saw you again. I'm gonna need a minute. Well I apologize for saying he's dead. Thank you for not yelling at the podcast Mike Bollum. And thank you for your service Sergeant Slaughter.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Yeah, proud to be with yes. Actually I can answer this. He was in G.I. Joe. He no. He never served in the military. He received several draft deferments and even opposed the war, often protesting and demonstrating within the anti-war movement. Oh, holy shit! He was on the right side of history. This has caused controversy because at times he has talked about military service while seeming to be speaking as himself and not in K-Fabe. Listen, he wasn't GI Joe as I mentioned, generally. There you go, yep, yep, yep. As we know, knowing's half the battle. Knowing is half the battle.
Starting point is 00:07:58 So what are we here to talk about? Katie, we're here to talk about a movie that I may have watched two weeks ago. I may not remember all that well. Okay, yes, because I also watched it two weeks ago and turned it off halfway through because I was so bored I couldn't take it. Are you serious? Yes. Did you finish it? I did yesterday. So you could have a vague first half and then a real, real tuned in second half. Well, I was watching a lot of videos on my phone while I watch the second half. I'm sorry, it's not fun. David, could I see you over here please? I want to apologize for the way the Katie is treated your film.
Starting point is 00:08:36 David, you know I love you, but I do not love this. Cretirion collection, first of all, I don't know if I've ever seen a Criterion Collection film before. I saw that come up and I thought, oh hey Hedges. There was just a really good New York Times piece about the Criterion Collection. The whitest thing you've ever said. I was listening to Terry Gross the other day. How does one become part of the criterion collection? Oh, so, um, it's, there is a, basically a panel of people who choose what movies make it into criterion. So there are like directors and actors who will like, try to get their movies in. Like, early days, they started off as a laser disc company to let you know how far back they started. And David Bowie came to one of them and was like, like, and was like, like, and was like, like, like, like, like, like, the the their, their, their, their, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. And, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. And, theean, thi. And, thean, thean, thean, thi. And, thi. And, thi. And, thi, thi, th started. And David Bowie came to one of them and was like,
Starting point is 00:09:25 look, the reason the man who fell to earth doesn't make any sense because the distributor lopped out 18 minutes of it, willy-nilly. So I would like you to re-release it, so it makes sense. Cool. It still didn't make sense. No, not at all. But, so, yeah, it's just like, and then they also, like, they do things that they think are valuable to cinema, like Armageddon, I'm sorry, what is it?
Starting point is 00:09:50 Armageddon. Whenever someone says Armageddon now, I always think they're saying it wrong. Omegadon, it's attacking the earth. Listen, that's the epitome of mispronouncing words. Robocop is a criterion movie. Oh, I have seen them before. There you go. So it's not just like hittit-highty high-falutin movies. Why scanners, though?
Starting point is 00:10:14 I mean, it's an important piece of cinema. No, it's not. Is the brooddue. I think it should be. Okay it should be. Yeah I think a lot of funnevert movies are. All right good fine. So it's like not that selective then is what you're saying. Is Verodica in it? Man we have to pick a time to watch that movie. I know. Are we doing it as a watchalong? Oh I don't if we can because you have it on DVD. I have it on DVD. I was talking to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to be to to be to be to be to be the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their. I'm. I'm. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. th. th. th. th. th. th. I. th. I. I. I. I. I was talking to people online or on our discord to see if someone could find a totally illegal, 100% legal stream of it somewhere. Well, I can just rip it, can I? And rip it good. Can you rip it and rip it? I don't know? I would assume if I put it in my CD-burner. I don't have a CD-rom drive? What am I talking about? Katie? Katie, can I be honest with you? I have no fucking thi I thi I thi I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. thi. I'm just just just thi-I th. I'm thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th get on the internet. I have no idea. Hey, our listeners do. If you guys know how to take a movie, this is illegal from a digital versatile disc and put
Starting point is 00:11:14 it on our computers for us to share with you, then we can all watch the Danzig film Ghost Rider. Death Rider in the Valley of the Vampire House. Yes. It's a little bit from Danzig called, They're all fucking vampires. We could all watch it together if you help us. Can you help us? Where off ambulance at Gmail. Also if you're the police, I didn't say that. Yeah, and if you're the mini marinaera mall gott, don't come after us. What is that? Clintanzeg, he's the mini marinara mall. Holy fucking hell.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I saw a meme the other day where he will take Christopher from the soprano's talking to Tony soprano and they just make up dumb shit. And so it always starts off with, so you see tea, they're a band called the Misfit and they're the............ the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I. th. th. th. I. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the m. th. th. th. th. th. the min min min min min mine. the mine. the min min mine. Oh, the min min mine. Oh, the min min mine. Oh, the min. Oh, the min. Oh, the m. Oh, the m. Oh, the m. Oh, the see T, and then it was, you see T, they're a band called The Misfits and they dress up like, I don't know, Dimes Store Dracula or something. All documented, all true. Welcome to my book collection. So the first thing I'm excited about with this movie is that it's got Patrick McGuin in it. Real apparently really did not get along with David Cronenberg according to the David Cronenberg Cronenberg book Cronenberg on Cronenberg, which I am currently reading. Thank you, Christina.
Starting point is 00:12:35 He looks so pissed off the entire time he's on screen. Apparently he did not trust David Cronenberg. He did not think this would be a good movie. He was right. But yes, he looks like he's doing the second point. But he was on a TV show called The Prisoner back in the day in England. You might know it from being referenced on a fantastic Iron Maiden song called The Prisoner. Oh! I'm not a prisoner. I'm a free man. God, what a great record that is. Oh my god. Yeah. But I was like, oh, I forgot. I haven't seen this movie since like I was a kid. So I forgot that he was a kid. So I forgot that he was a today. Yeah, he always does. Sure. I haven't seen this. I thee. that's the guy from the, I can't believe it's not butter ads of the mid the mid the mid. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. I. I. I. I. I. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I. Yeah. I. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I th. Yeah. I th. I th. I th. I th.'s not butter ads of the mid 1980s because that's what I know Cameron Vail from. Wait who's that? The main guy the main guy the yeah Cameron the guy who cannot move his face when he talks. Oh Stephen Lack yeah yeah I
Starting point is 00:13:37 just kept thinking he's got a real Greg Brady energy he's got a real Greg Brady energy and he's also a little bit wallied so you're not ever sure what he's doing, you know. You know, I mean, that just keeps, like, keeps you guessing the whole time. I do not know why he was cast in this role. I will say, historically Kronenberg does get good performances out of actors that you've never seen in anything else. Sure, other than his movies, yeah. The guy who's in this that was that was that was that was that was that was in that was in that was in that. That was in that. That was in th. That was in th. That. the the the the the th. th. the the the the th. th. the the the the the th. th. the the the the the thi. the the th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. The guy who's in this that was also in, what was that movie called, with the worms in the, Slither? Yeah. The guy was like, shivers. Shivers.
Starting point is 00:14:14 I do this every time, every fucking time. The guy with the comb over. Yes, who plays Bernard or whatever, or Ben, because he has the big lump on his neck. I think th think think th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I think he's in both, actually. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Yeah. Um, yeah. Yeah. I just don't know. Stephen Lack did not appear in any other of his films, I don't think. And I think it's because he's not good at all? I'll let you all at home fill in the rest of that joke on your own time. We're paid professionals. We've got to keep moving here.
Starting point is 00:14:51 That's below us. I do like that he's wearing a lot of shirts when we first see him. Like eight shirts. Yeah, he's homeless. He's homeless. And he's just walking around eating people's french fries, which I always think about doing in a restaurant. 100% or like thi th walk by like the food service carts outside a room just like you're not gonna stop that? You're done with this you're not gonna finish that. I'm drunk
Starting point is 00:15:11 and you're done with this. Yeah yep yep yep yep there are these two women talking about I'm like oh so disgusting except he's like clean and sort of hot you know in a walled the walled-like Greg Br Greg Brady kind of way. Well, like Greg Brady kind of way. And so while they're staring at him, he starts staring back, and then we hear, a wee- Real loud whining noise. Yes. And then she freezes. And then she frees and seizes.
Starting point is 00:15:35 theyze. And then she's doing a thing where she's like, don't grab your tits, don't grab your tits, I'm grabbing my tits! Like she did not know what to do with her hands, and it's very, very, very silly. She has great legs for a stodgy old bitch, though. I noticed neither her gamps nor her tip grabbing. She just, you know when you can tell when someone doesn't know what to do with their hands, she doesn't. My favorite line in Talladega Nights. I don't know what to do with my hands when he's being interviewed to say I'll just keep
Starting point is 00:16:10 coming into frame. I have never seen Tala Deauga Nights. Oh, it's so funny. I know. Talladega Nights. What's another one? Days of Thunder. That's a documentary. So he starts getting after he is eating the French fries and gives the lady a seizure with his high wine noises. He starts getting chased by chubby FBI agents. Well, they're Canadian, so I don't know what they would be.
Starting point is 00:16:42 CBI agents. This French Canadian food court is fucking insane. Where is this hellscape? I feel like it's 80% steps. Yeah, 80% steps and like red overhead lighting, a thing that I've never seen anywhere outside of a club. Or a pizza hut. Pizza hut. Pizza hut would be a great place to do the walk by someone's table and eat their food too.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Because you just grab a slice. And then you're eating Pizza Hut and you're sad. I'll eat Pizza Hut anytime. I mean I'm gonna get diarrhea anyway so. Yeah. It's the worst. It's the worst. It's fine. I like that ice. What? The ice that they always had like crushed ice. Okay. Yeah, but the the the the the ice. I I I I I I I I I I the ice the ice the ice the ice the ice th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I'll th. I mean, does Pizza Hut still exist? Probably. There's none here? No. No. Actually, is there still one on Bomb Boulevard across from the Mercedes dealership? Oh yeah, there is! Yeah, let's go to Pizza Hut after this. It has like a drive-through. It has like a drive-through. I thi-I th. th. th. ththat you're always trying to get me to go out to eat after we were tore.
Starting point is 00:17:48 It's like 11 p.m. and I'm like, let's get Taco Bell. Let's go get some diarrhea. Sometimes I like a late night diarrhea. Oh God. Okay, that's not going to chaps take him away and he wakes up in a hospital slash warehouse. But first he does this like hanging on and riding the escalator thing, which I've also thought about and I thought, my God, I'm Stephen Lack. Also, when he wakes up, they've cut his hair.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Oh, if you get shot with enough like drugs to knock you out your hair shrinks. Really? Proven fact. Yeah, I'm sick of paying for haircuts. Exactly, just get knocked out more of you. I would want to go to Pizza Hut? It does seem like a place you might get to look at. Yeah especially the one on Bomb Boulevard. So he wakes up and Patrick McGuin is there. That sounds like the name of a fake cop in a video game. Patrick McGoon. Even better, his name in this movie made me choral. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Dr. Ruth. Dr. Ruth is a thing and was a thing at the time this movie was made, wasn't she? Was a very big thing at the time this movie was made. And I can only assume that once again David Kernberg was taken the piss. You think so? Yeah. Maybe that's why this guy was so mad at him? Dr. Ruth. Ruth. Dr. Ruth. You got a bad attitude you're going to be Dr. Ruth. Also, Dr. Ruth rules, right? Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Is she still alive? I can't imagine. Well, Sergeant Slaughter is. Well, M.M. and Walsh isn't. Dr. Ruth is still fucking alive. Hell yeah. Yeah. the Fourth. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And loves to fuck. And loves to fuck. And is also only like four and a half feet tall. And is super stoked on other people fucking. Yeah. Yeah. She wants everybody to have a good time. He just wants everybody to fuck.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Yeah. But safely and consensually. nut. I'm Dr. Ruth. Yeah, this Dr. Ruth way better than that Dr. Ruth. I mean that Dr. Ruth is being the one in scanners. He's so boring. He makes this movie so much more boring. I wish she was in this movie. Oh my god, what if she was in that role? You're a scanner but you don't realize. Dr. Ruth Westheimer. That's a banging ass name. She's so cool. Yeah. So yeah, Dr. Ruth. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. th. th. Dr. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the movie. I's th. I is is th. I is th. I is th. I is th. I is th. I is th. I is th. I. I. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I's. I's. I's. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. th. the. th. th. th. th. th., yeah, yeah. So yeah, Dr. Ruth wakes up Stephen Lack, Cameron Vale, if you will. Sure. And tells him he's a scanner. Yeah, you're a scanner, so you'll be working the checkout, I guess. Yeah, yeah, it's scanners is not... It's not a great description of what they do. Sure. But sometimes it is, because scanning is about reading people's minds and also about murdering them.
Starting point is 00:20:48 I don't know about that. So he starts freaking out and whining again. While Dr. Ruth is yelling, hurry up at what appears to be volunteers, coming single file up a flight of stairs. What do you want them to do? What I love about this scene, spoiler alert, I like this movie a lot more than you did, apparently, is that we see them all coming in and all of their mouths are closed, but there's this like Cusserous of sound going on all the time.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Yeah, murmur, murmur, murmur. And it's like it's kind of matting because he's freaking out. thr, th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, thum. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. theea. thea. toeauuu. toeau. toeau. toeau. theau. thea. thea. thea. and there's this background noise that it's almost like it's panning from your speakers or something like it's doing some weird audio shit. It sure is. I apologize for my voice, I have a bit of a snottiness going on. Not just your not just a bad attitude. Not just a bad attitude. But and he's like freaking and then they shoot him with a, what is it, ephemeral? Yeah. Yeah. David. And so he wakes up and now the doctor's all nice to him.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Well yeah, he like can't take it no reason given, new scene, very Cronenberg, you know. So apparently this movie was made in a super big hurry. Sure. Because David Cronenberg was getting some sort of like funding Canadian government credits for it, but it had to be made by the end of the year. And he had always previously like meticulously planned his films, you know. So he was literally writing this as they were filming it. Like he would be, he would go home or go to his trailer or whatever after filming and and like write the next day scenes.
Starting point is 00:22:25 Wow. Yeah, which fucking shows. You know this movie has multiple sequels? What? And people have tried multiple times to make TV shows out of it. I could see it being a TV show. Scanner Cops. Well, that's no fun. They just know. They just read your mind, right? No, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're they're their. their. their. their. their. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. the. the. the. the. thea. thea. thea. thooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. the. the. the. They just know. Immediately, they just read your mind, right? No, no, they're people who are hunting the scanners, I believe.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Oh, I thought it would be like, you know, law and order, S-V-U, except they sit down across the table from the criminal. And they're like, did you do it? And he's like, they're like, they're like, they're like, yeah. He's like, yeah. He's just. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I th. I'd tho. th. th. th. th. th. th. I'd th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thought. tho. I thought it would tho. I thought. I th. I th. I th. I got no traction on that re-watch podcast, huh? I just say we just start doing it. Yeah, let's just do it. Fuck them. Well, who's gonna pay us to do it? That's what I need to know. I'm not doing this for free. Can touch Steve Arnott if you're willing to pay us to talk about you? Can we get Martin Compton Consta on the show? Absolutely. We'll go to Vegas. We'll go Vegas. We'll go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go. We go to go go. We go go go go go go. We go go go go go. We go go. We go go go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go. We'll go go go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to Vegas. to Vegas. to Vegas. to Vegas. to to Vegas. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to go my whole life. I've never wanted to go to Vegas. I'm not big on deserts. No, or gambling. Or gambling. Or gambling or a wild waste of natural resources. Yeah, none of those things. But I do love liquor and swimming pools. So it could work out for me. Did I send you the video of him that I found online stage diving at a concert? No! I'll just send that to.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Things no one cares about but us. So cut to, he gets the injection and the doctor's being nice to him. Cut to a bald dude in a conference room. This guy's such a fucking dork. I love him. With like six other people in the room. Yes. Including Dr. Gatineau. Gatineau? And he's telling them that no one can leave,
Starting point is 00:24:11 he's gonna scan the room. No one can leave during the scanning. Never do anything where no one's allowed to leave the room. Ever, ever, ever. I'm even hesitant to go to go out. Yeah, well, I might tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho to to tho to tho, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. tho. tho. tho. te. te. te. te. tell. tell. tho. te. too. too. too. too. to to to to to go to shows where they're like no ins and outs. Oh, what if I need to go out? Yeah, well, I might need to go out. I might need to go out. I might need to go out. 50-year-old man.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Yes, you cannot contain me. And Michael Ironside is in the crowd. And he asked for volunteers, and Michael Ironside, It turns to a real Eddie Monty concert for you youngsters out there. I don't know what that means and also... Shaking! You've heard Eddie Money before. Oh Eddie Money! I'm more of a, you know, take me home. Sure. And he's also two tickets to Paradise, yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Sure. Yeah. Okay, I know who Eddie. Maybe you just, he's a former cop. Eddie Mahoney. Oh, I'm jealous. Why Katie Money? No. No.
Starting point is 00:25:14 No. Anyway, you were going to say? The faces people make when they scan and are being scanned are very uncomfortable in this scene particular. It just looks like David Cronenberg was like, listen, I have some shit I have to do. I want you to just look like you're trying to take a big shit, but you can't. I have a note that says, duct-lipped choices were made. Yeah, because there's a lot of like, hul-lo-lo-yeah, the dork is like really showing you all his teeth. And Michael Ironside looks like he's, yeah, making noises at a baby like, boo-boo-boo. But at the end of the scanning, one of the most amazing things in cinema history happened.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Great Giff. Usable in so many situations. This ballheaded man's head completely fucking explodes. Dick Smith, amazing job. Amazing job. Also David Cronenberg said that they got that in the first like take of it. Yeah. And so he went and had a nap while they blew up other heads because he knew he'd gotten what he wanted. God, you're such a dick. You guys keep working, I'm gonna go now. I think I'll lie down. And that couldn't have been easy to reset. No, and also I think they really should have ended the movie right there. That's the last good thing.
Starting point is 00:26:37 What? Yes. Oh, I don't know about that. All right. So, guys, right, so guys head explodes. They take Michael Ironside away at gun points. More of these chubby cops come. For mind crimes. He's being taken away for mind crimes. But I like this because we're just like dropped into a world where this is a thing that happens.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Sure. You know I love when a world is just set up and starts ripping and rocket. For sure. Teeny, tiny little guns. You just need a little dark, boop. Oh, yeah, I guess they are dark guns, that's fair. So they give him a shot of ephemeral as well. Right. And then he's starting to do scan Dr. Gatino, is it? Oddly boyish haircut on that doctor. I don't remember the haircut. Yeah, I don't remember the haircut. I don't either. I wrote that note to myself two weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:27:25 And Ironside forces a car crash in the car so that he can escape. Wait, does he get the doctor to like stick himself in his own ungloved hand? I think so. What are you doing? Oh, when he's trying to give him the shot. Yeah, it now that you're saying that it was like this was like a fly by the seat of pants I could see like padding, patting, patting. Yes.
Starting point is 00:27:48 And also we gotta get this out before the end of the year. And there's, there, so he gets like other cops to shoot other cops and they're shooting each other. People are going crazy, everything's whack-a-do. Why is a vehicle full of TNT? I don't know. Apparently in the 70s, like cars were manufactured out of gasoline, there was so much oil around. Oh, it was just a richness of oil.
Starting point is 00:28:13 You could form it into actual pliable materials and build cars out of them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's insane. Rip Saturn's. Oh yeah. Yeah. Rip. Rip Saturns. Rip Saturn's. So cut to the Consec building. OK. Because you needed a board meeting going on.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Wait, is this where the cop shoots himself first? OK, I like that. Because I wrote ACAB about it. And also, if you were a cop and you were listening to me talking ripping a digital versatile disc of a dancing movie and now you hear me say ACAB you can just go home. Yeah I don't want to hear about it from you. You allegedly heard her say that. You all the the they, I don't have any evidence of this. There's no recording of it. No. That could be anyone's voice. Deep fakes. That could be anyone's voice. Deep. That. That that. That that. That that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that th. That th. That th. th. thi thi. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the thi the thi thi thi thi the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their their their thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi thi actually done this podcast in three years. I know I love it. I actually died 18 months ago. We kept the podcast going. She died and now inhabits my body. It's super weird. I'm the Michael Iron Side and I'll talk. We'll get to it.
Starting point is 00:29:19 So Dr. Ruth is there. Dr. Ruth. And he thinks there's another scanner program going on somewhere. Yeah, what is CONSEC? Oh, CONSEC, they're corporation? They do corporation stuff. Okay. Yeah, they're like a corporation. What is their goal? Oh, I assume take over the world as all corporations do in Cronenberg world.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Got it. And he's talking about a scanner underground and Darryl Revick. He's their leader. That's Michael Ironside. That's Michael Ironside. Yeah. Do you think Dr. Ruth was like, why couldn't I be Rebick? Yeah, Dr. Revek? Because you know, Cronenberg likes to fuck around with people's names. I think athing that really bothers me about this movie is that I'm so accustomed to him building these like weird colorful memorable characters. Yeah. And I feel like this movie lacks all of that. Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah other than Michael Ironside. And I think that's just Michael Iron Side being Michael Iron side. He's doing a lot of the heavy lift. For sure. So they need a scanner mold to get into the scanner underground. Oh okay. Yeah yeah yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:30 For our own peace of mind we have to retaliate. Exactly. What? Wait? Wait, what? What? It's usually what I say in the morning when I wake up? Oh, I like that. That's a great way to start your day. You know what? For my own peace of mind, I need to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to to to to be to the the sco. their to be to be to their. their. the sco. the sco. the sco. the sco. the sc. the sc. the sc. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. te. te. te. te. te. toe. to. the th. the the the the the the the the the th. th. the th. That's a great way to start your day. You know what, from my own peace of mind, I need to retaliate. Wake up and choose retaliation. So he has a backup scanner because the rest of the scanners have been killed or something. Whenever you say scanner, I just imagine like a flatbed, you know, put your picture on that. Peep. Yep. I'm just pictur, I'm just picturing a self-checkout. Yeah, exactly. to thick. the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thu, thu, thu. thi. thi. thi. thu. thu. thu. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. the. the. thea. thea. tea. tea. tea. tea. tea. tea. tea. tea. thea. thea. the. Yeah, exactly. Dr. Ruth's like, I got a backup scanner. I'm going to go meet with them now. We're going to get this all going. I'm going to go talk to the psychopharmacist. Who? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:15 That's like the most like elevated drug dealer giving themselves a new title. I don't think myself is a the drug drug drug drug psychopharmacist. More of a psychopharmacy distributor. Psychopharmaceutical distributor. Yeah. Uh, so we find out that ephemeral is a scan suppressant. Yeah, it prevents the flow of telepathy. Uh-huh. It's ephemeral.
Starting point is 00:31:42 Yeah. Get it? No, I do. Who is Mr. Keller? I don't know that says Mr. Keller calls for his car. Oh, that's one of the old guys. Okay. One of the corporation guys, I think. One of the con-sec people? Yeah. There's a lot of men in this movie who look the same to me. And I know that's a problem I have in a lot of movies. Oh yeah, there's just like a lot of white hair and big glasses walking around. And all talking to each other in every scene. I can't remember who's on what side. I can't remember who has what goals.
Starting point is 00:32:13 I just frankly don't care. I feel like they're'm not sure. Yeah. So we see a tape of Rebick from 1967 explaining drilling a hole into his own head. This is actually the second best scene in the movie after the guy's head. So yeah, he's just a wild dude who drills holes in his head. He said, sometimes I feel like there's too many people in my head, not enough room for Darryl. Darrell's such a good name to end that sentence on. Yeah, not enough room for Darryl.
Starting point is 00:32:48 But he freaks out then, starts yelling at the nurse and whatever, she runs out of the room and he starts throwing shit. In a way that Michael Ironside was like built to do. Sure. His head drilling did heal pretty nicely. Sure. Very minor scar. Yeah, yeah. I did like that all the scar tissue in this was like a funny gray color.
Starting point is 00:33:12 It was like very off. This, yeah, I don't know. So we see that Revik has a list of scanners that he's looking for to make his scanner army or something? I don't know. I don't know. Oh, right, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, yeah, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th, I th, yeah, I th, I th, I did, I did th, I did th, I did th, yeah, yeah, yeah, I did th, I did th, I did th, I did thi, I did thi, I did, I did, I did, I did, I did, I did, I did, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I th, I th, I th, I th, I th th th th th thi, I did thi, thi, thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, I did thi's looking for to make his scanner army or something? I don't know. I don't know. Oh right, and this is when Keller, Keller is the like security guy who works for Consec. Okay. And he goes to the train station and meets with somebody and we can't see who it is we have no idea who he's meeting with, but we 100% know that it's Darryl Revich. Of course it's it's the fucking th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. K, th. K, th. K, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. K. K. thi. thi. thi. thi. thii. thi. thii. thi. thi. K. K. K's fucking Darryl Revick. I have a note that says he's
Starting point is 00:33:48 which I have a note that's way more intense than this scene warrants. Yeah. Which is Keller catches a train. Oh no he doesn't. It's a clandestine visit. Yeah, no, none of that really sounds as looks as cool as it sounds. It's really just dudes walking around on a subway platform. So Cameron is going to go train with a yoga master? White doll seam here, wearing tweed. Yeah, he controls his heart rate and yoga flame. I want you to tou toucest heart with your mind.
Starting point is 00:34:27 What, what, brain to heart? Don't worry, Dalsim lives, he doesn't kill him, despite his best efforts. It almost kills him. And he's like, it was easy. And you don't know whether he's like, gleeful or just like a little confused. And Stephen Lacks. I think it's supposed to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like to be like, like, like, like, like, like, like, to be the the sucks. I think it's supposed to be like he's getting control of his powers and like understanding them more is what we're supposed to get from this scene.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Stick to I can't believe it's not butter commercials. I am blown the fuck away that you remember in it. I can't believe it's not butter commercial. It's because I have some old VHS tapes of television from the 80s from when I was a child and he is in all the I can't remember it's I can't believe it's not butter or parquet. I think it's I can't believe it's not butter. Yeah. I was so excited I was watching a VH1 documentary from like the late 90s about YoMTV wraps. Whoa! And it had all the commercials from the the th. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't I can't I can I can I can I can I can I can I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I I I I th. I I I I I I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't th. I can't the commercials from the 90s in the like, so like, that's so rad. Like an old ass head and shoulders commercial and stuff. How was the documentary? I was fine, it was too short. I could have like, I could have hung out with Ed Lover and Dr. Dr. Dr. Dre for a lot longer. Sure. Fab 5 Freddie. Suddenly we're in an art gallery. Yeah, former prisoner artist who makes creepy art shit. He's touching the art. Don't touch the fucking art, art though it may be.
Starting point is 00:35:47 What is this cat's medium? I think everything? There's like oil paintings, sculptures. There's an entire room that sits inside of someone's head. Yeah, it's there's installations. I don't. It's all very stupid. It's all very bad. it's all very bad. I kind of want the headroom, it was pretty told. You like that? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Be a nice place to chill, read a book. We meet the owner of the gallery. Arno Crosstick, thank you, David Cronenberg. Thank you, David Cronenberg name generator out there. Alternately, David Cronenberg has like a giant alphabet mat for children tacked to a wall and just throw his arts at it. I'm looking up David Cronenberg name generator. Maybe I'll look at the Wu Tang name generator while you talk about this movie.
Starting point is 00:36:38 You'll never be a best, bastard harbester. Are you sure? Harbor Master. But this is New Harbor. Are you sure? Well, you tell me what you get. Hold on. Do I put my last name in there? Yeah. Oh, I didn't realize that childish Gambino use the Wu Tang. That's his, it was his Wutang generator name, according to this internet article
Starting point is 00:37:00 I'm now reading instead of this movie. I just put in my first name and I got well thought of big cat. Put my whole name in there. What you got? I'm doing it. All right. Well thought of big cat? Yes, quiet enchanter.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Quiet enchanter! Hmm. Let's see if it does my original Wu Tang generator name. Oh, I got nothing. I'm telling ya! Oh, and no, excessive mugger. I don't like that. Excessive mugger. I mean, is there an acceptable amount of mugging?
Starting point is 00:37:34 Oh, yeah. 100%. How many muggings do you get a year? Oh, we'll like mugge it for the camera. Oh, ah, ah, that's that's. That's. That's. That's. That's. That's. That's. That's. That's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. th. th. th. th. th. th. that's th. th. th. th. to. th. to. to. th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. that's. th. th. am an excessive mugger, because when someone takes my picture, I'm like, hey! And a quiet enchanter. That is decidedly untrue. You are enchanting, though. I am neither of those things.
Starting point is 00:37:53 So... Cameron is at the art gallery. He's like trying to get Arno to set up a meeting between him and the artist. Right. Arno says no, I'm sorry, he doesn't meet the public. And he's like, well just give me his address then? Yeah. No.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Yeah. Yeah. Why don't you just think about where he lives? Dude. Scans him for the info. And is this where we see the lady who's also also also also also also also also also also also also also the lady, the lady, the lady, the the the the the the the the the the the the the info. And then is this where we see the the lady who's also a scanner? Jennifer O'Neill? Yeah. Yeah, who was apparently given a copy of the script with no violence in it no like blood. Yeah. She's got real sad when she saw. Yeah. She's a real smoke show.
Starting point is 00:38:37 Lovely. Yeah. And she's spicious. And she's spthey're looking at, like, look at each other, scanner, scanner, are you scanning me? I'm scanning you. I'm scanning you, can we scan each other? So dumb. I'm not gonna be ti-suke thee, so fucking dumb. He goes to meet the artist. Benjamin Pierce. To teach him thingto touch stuff, you know what I'm talking about?
Starting point is 00:39:07 Get off my train. Get off my train. That guy scared the shit out of me. Oh man. But yes, this is the guy with the big thing on his neck. Yes. Yeah, from the other movie. Fantastic Comover. It's I always th. It's th. I th. I th. I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. tha. thi. tha. tha. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. thi. tho. thi. tho. tha. th. th. th. th. th. th. Get. th. Get. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. as a wispy wish. What else would you call? That's what it is, yeah. But I love the giant head hangout spot that they go into to have an argument. Uh-huh. And then machine or shotgun people come in and start shotguning everything.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Shot his team sculpture and then his leg. But they are getting fucking scanned, scanned so hard. I do like that like the the people with the shotguns are like a rag tag group. Who are they though? Who are they? Did Consec hire them? Who are they? I thought they worked for Revic. Wait.
Starting point is 00:40:01 Does he, does Revic want to kill them or recruit them? Uh, I thought he wanted to recruit them. Maybe. I don't know, Alan. I have a note that says not Revick, his army are robot killers. Oh. I don't know what that means. No, what that means either. I think you were accidentally watching Robocop again.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Uh, my next note just says Cameron gets a package of ephemeral. Well, yeah, so, yeah, you generally don't want to push air into the vial as a note that I put here. I don't think it's a thing you mean to do. You know, like a little bubble blood, a little bubble blood, bubble, bubble, bubble. Bubble blood. I just love a little bubble blood. Bumble bubble blood. Is this a parable about psych meds?
Starting point is 00:40:47 I don't know what's happening here. Yeah. I think it's like a parable about being Nebby. Okay. Like mind your business. Is the moral of the story? Is it though? Keep yourself to yourself? Uh, so... Oh, the last thing Ben says before he dies, he just goes, Kim Obrist, which turns all to be Jennifer O'Neill, who is the only woman in this movie. No, one of the, one of the, uh, one of the people with the shotguns was a lady. Oh, okay, good. She got no lines, no dialogue, would you? No.
Starting point is 00:41:27 No. So yeah, it's the lady from the gallery who was scanning him and they have a scan hangout and they scan each other. I think so. Then the gun guys show back up. I, Alan, my notes are really messy here. I have that, that, that, Eh? How did he have a shotgun on his person? Why does everyone have shotguns in his world? I have a note that says group self?
Starting point is 00:41:55 Sure. I haven't noticed this, I'm so bored. And then at one hour and four minutes, I have officially abandoned the project of white men talking. Well Kim lights some dude up literally lights his ass on fire. Yeah that was a nice firewalk. And then the apartment burns that they're in. Yeah. And then there's a school bus escape or they drive away on a school bus. A getaway school bus for sure. Yeah. Oh this scene I loved. So they're getting away on the... I'm sorry normally I feel like I feel like I th I th I th I th I th I th I feel like I feel like I feel like I feel like I feel like I have I have I have I feel like I have I have I have I have like I have like I have like I have like I have like I have a like I have a th. I feel like. I feel like. I feel like. I'm. I'm. th. I'm. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the.. So they're getting away on the... I'm sorry. Normally I feel like I have a better poker face than that, but I could not. I just, something inside my face just moved. You went, hmm? Hmm? Hmm? So there's this great scene of they're driving
Starting point is 00:42:41 the school bus through the city of Canada. Canada City. And as they're going, just like kind of like out of shot almost, you just see this black van coming down the sidewalk and it looks like a fucking predator. It looks like a shark coming out to attack the school bus. There's like this implied violence that's going to happen. Really well executed shot from Kern. Sure. He can do those. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the th. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their their their their their their their th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. thea. their their their their their their their their their their their the that's going to happen, really well executed shot from Kernerburn. Sure. He can do those.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. He just didn't get the chance to do many of them in this movie. But I thought it was just like really, because it was just like there's a lot of traffic that they're in. And then this bus being on the sidewalk was like, that, that, that, the, the, thi, you're not supposed to be out of the side. Why are you not? What's happening here? What is it? Oh my God! Wild, because they opened this movie on the first day of shooting with a car, a car, that killed two people. Sorry? That there was a man driving a pickup truck or something.
Starting point is 00:43:33 And he was like distracted by the crew ran over to help and like had to pull the bodies out of the car. First day of filming. Jesus Christ. This movie is cursed. Your boredom is not a curse. Those people's deaths are a curse. For sure, that's fucked up. That sucks. Yeah. Now Dr. Ruth is lounging in a leather chair. Why is Dr. Ruth on opium?
Starting point is 00:44:00 Why is he so slow? Oh. The bus flips and only Cam and Kim survive. Of course, because they're scanners, I think. They go into a wrecked record store, which I thought was funny. You like that? A wreck record. Okay, all right. The guys follow them. There's more gun guys.
Starting point is 00:44:20 And then we cut to bi-carbon amalgamate. Yeah. What's that now? That is the other scanners. Right. That is the company run by Revick. Darryl Revick. And then Cameron goes there under cover and hacks the mainframe. Yeah, they're talking about computer clearances and computers having nervous systems. I don't know and I don't care
Starting point is 00:44:46 I remember when computers were just like big tape machines. Yeah, I don't But I do from these movies. That's why I know that You just suddenly just revealed that you're much older than I am because I'm inhabiting your body now. It's aging me. I'm so sorry for your loss. Here's a note that I wrote myself, Alan's gonna have to tell me how this one ends. I've moved on to watching videos of Kyle Writon House being chased off stage by protesters. Do you watch that? I saw a little bit of it. Fucking great. Apparently he had a dog on stage with him. He was a dick to the dog. I like jerked the dog. I did see the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. I the dog. I did. I did. the dog. I did. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. I did. the dog. to the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. I the dog. I the dog. I the dog. I was. I was. I was. I was. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the dog. the the the. C. C. C. Do. C. t. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I t. I t. I t. I t. I t. I t. I t. I t. t. t. t. tog. t. tog. t. t. tog. t. t. tog. t. tog. t. t. t. t. t.the dog. I did see the dog go off stage with him, but I was too busy laughing at him, like not knowing how to answer people's questions. And then some guy coming out and being like, just leave and him being like, I gotta go and running away like a little bitch baby.
Starting point is 00:45:34 Sorry, why is that murderer going and talking to crowds? I don't know, well I'm glad they're chasing him off. I just saw a clip that was like, someone talking about, I can't remember which asshole that he's affiliated with being a racist. And Kyle Rittenhouse, it's like, when? When was he racist? And the guy's like, okay, I have receipts and just starts listing off all the fucking, it was Matt Walsh. All like the fucked up shit that guy's done.
Starting point is 00:46:01 And he was like, I don't know anything about this. Yeah, that's the same thing. It's the same event. I don't know anything of, well, dumb dumb, they're telling you about it. Yeah. What was he racist? Here? Oh. Bye. I see. Oh.
Starting point is 00:46:18 So yeah, he hacks the the bad guy. the bad guy. I don't. Alan. You're the one the one the one the one. You're the one. You're the one guy running the thing. Is he the bad guy? I don't, I can't. Alan, you're the one who liked it. You're the one who watched it. So, uh, he calls Dr. Ruth, Dr. Ruth, like, sends a helicopter or something. I don't know. The oldest helicopter pilot I can imagine. I just have notes like, oh, more gunboys. There's a lot of gunboys. So Kim and Cam are a con sec. And why are they named Kim and Cam?
Starting point is 00:47:02 It sounds like an Australian like folk group of the 70s. Well listen, he's never called Cam. I gave him a nickname. As my friend in this movie, I gave him a nickname. Sure. Because I got sick of typing out Cameron. Reasonable. So they're basically being held prisoner at Consec now. And Dr. Ruth doesn't know any of the like, bad stuff the that that the 70s. thanks? And, th. I I I I I I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. Well, I thi. Well, I their, I their, I their, their their their their their their their thi. th. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. their. their. their. their. their, their, thi. thi. th. tho. the. thoo. their, their, their, their. their. their. their. their. their. their. held prisoner at Consec now. And Dr. Ruth doesn't know any of the like bad stuff that Consec wants to do via Keller. But he should because Dr. Ruth is presented to us as the smartest man in the world. Yes, but Dr. Ruth hates being in this movie and hates everything about it so he's not taking attention to what's going on. Same, Dr. Ruth, same, same. So there's a scene where Keller goes in to talk to Kim and like he shuts off all the
Starting point is 00:47:52 cameras in her room? Yeah. Because he's gonna kill her or something. I guess. And he slaps her? You can't just slap that lady. You can't just slap that lady. No, no, no. But then she scans him to death, right? Um, after he puts a gun in his face and like, oh yeah, I haven't said she calls, she tosses his candy ass around. She does. I don't know. I don't know. They go out in the hallway, there's some cops. She convinces one that he's looking at his mom. Yeah. And he's like, mom, th. th. th. th. th. th. th th th th th th th th th th th he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he he he he he can't he's he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he. Um, he. Um, he. Um, he. Um, he he he he he he he he he he he th. Uh, th. He's th. He's thi. Uh, thi. He's to thee. He's to to to to to th. He's to thus. He's thi. He's thi. Uh, thi. He's th.'s looking at his mom. Yeah. And he's like, mom, what are you doing here? I'm sorry, mom, I didn't mean it. Didn't mean what? Like that this was the only time that occurs in this movie. Yes, where you see the scanner from someone else's perspective? And it's just like his angry looking mom?
Starting point is 00:48:38 What? I thought that? Yeah, I did. I liked it less. I liked it less because it's the first time we've seen it happen and it's in the last five minutes of the film. Sure, sure. So Keller's telling security to kill all the scanners. Killer kills Dr. Ruth. And he's like, oh, everyone should just be fucking and be free. But Keller, then killers did. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fucking Kim says something about her unborn child scanned me?
Starting point is 00:49:08 That's right. Because suddenly it becomes about pregnancy in the last four minutes of the film? They're like at some doctor's office? Yeah. And there's a pregnant woman in the pregnant woman's baby, because they've been giving ephemeral to pregnant women to make new scanners. But it was being prescribed as a sedative and I thi thi, and I, and I, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, and I thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiii, thiiiiiiiiii, thiiii, thi, thi, thi, thi, thieral to pregnant women to make new scanners. But it was being prescribed as a sedative and I thought why do pregnant women need sedatives. Oh, Katie, I don't know if you know this. Women hysterical the best of times
Starting point is 00:49:35 and when they're pregnant, oh. Pickles, ice cream screaming. Just all gotta say is ephemeral. Ephemral. He says they're giving ephemeral to their pregnant patients and she says, I don't understand and he goes, ephemeral! I was like, this was like not long after like thalidomide babies and stuff. So like, I guess was the thought here. I mean, I feel like it came to him late one night and he scribbled it on a napkin,
Starting point is 00:50:07 you know. So my dude realizes my boy cam cam. Your boy can't get him. It's like, little cammy. Camelot and a ding dong. Camilla Anderson. It's like, listen, I've got a call into the computer. Just give it a, give it on the horn.
Starting point is 00:50:26 Give it a little blower. Call into the computer and then I'm going to talk to it with my brain geniuses. Right, because I can talk to computers. Yeah, because you can be people's moms, I can talk to people's mootts. the to bristle spouts, theirms, I's theirms, I theirms, I theirms, theirms, theirms, theirms, theirms, theirts, theirts, ths, they's, ths, they's, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, their, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their. their. their. their. their. their. their, get, their, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, get, to, their, their, their. their. their. could talk to Brussels Sprouts, human beings and computers. Do Brussels Sprouts feel pain when they're plucked from the stock? Probably. Yeah, probably. Do Brussels Sprouts feel pain when you're farting them out later?
Starting point is 00:50:54 Yes. Yeah. They do. Well, that's a Brussels Sprout's ghost. Get off my train. So he scans the computers and like the guys working at the computer place for like I don't know what's happening. What's happening right now? Whoa!
Starting point is 00:51:15 And they get blown all over the place. Long lingering shots of like the black screen with the green letters and you're like, I don't know what this is meant to be. Computers. Oh my God. The gas station blows up with Kimmy and Kami there. The only part I liked of that was there was just a guy at the gas station going, oh shit. But the fucking gas station exploded in the two room, like, huh? And the phone booth explodes. Why does the phone explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? th explode? Yeah th explode? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? th th th th explode? th explode? th explode? thoom th explode? th explode? th explode? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah. th. th. th. tha tha tha tha tha tha tha the the the the the the the the the the the that. It's not how this works. And then the phone booth explodes.
Starting point is 00:51:46 Why does the phone booth explode? What? Yep. Too much scanning. They go to see Dr. Frein? I don't know who that is. No, have you? We met this doctor before?
Starting point is 00:52:01 Okay, all right. Oh, so that's when they find out about the the babies Scanning Kim this is when we see that and the ephemeral on the new scanners Kim gets darted they go back to biocarb and amalgamate right and Darryl Revek and Cameron come face to face Katie Alan. What's their relationship? You're my brother, Cameron, my kid brother. Who's your dad? Dr. Ruth? Dr. Ruth? Is he their biological dad? Dr. Ruth fucked and then gave the baby mama... Oh I assumed he come did ephemeral. Wait, you think his come is ephemeral? Yeah. So you think when he gave it to Cameron earlier in the movie it was his own come? Oh no.
Starting point is 00:52:48 Ellen. Well they found out to synthesize it but the original ephemeral. You think it all comes from his ephemables? You think Dr. Ruth is the Eden of of scanners. Fuck dude. So we get not a wizard fight, but a scan off. A scan off. At least this is something, I guess. They're both staring at each other and shaking and making duck lips. And getting puffier and puffier. Puffy, puffy veins.
Starting point is 00:53:19 Yeah. I like when Cameron gets that little stream of blood out of his cheek that looks like you poked a hole in a water balloon. That made me laugh. I was like, what is your blood pressure, Cameron? I'm very concerned. Very upsetting. Oh my God, Cameron, it's like his hands light on fire at some point.
Starting point is 00:53:40 And why is he also made of gasoline? Yeah. He emulates himself. He does it himself? I think so. I thought Revick did that. And his eyes pop. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:53 And then Revick's eyes go white and he's like, giggity, giddy, giddy. Yeah. And then Kimmy comes in the door. The body on the floor. Yes. And she's like, that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that. And she's like, that's a body on the floor. Somebody let it hit the floor. Yes. And she runs and she sees Michael Ironside in the corner. And he comes out and he goes, Kim, it's me, Cammy. Why does he say that? Because Cameron blew his own body up and entered his brother's body. Well, what happened to Darryl Reffick?
Starting point is 00:54:26 Yes! I don't know. Maybe he's in there with him? Are you in there with me in your new body? Your body that I live in now? I think so. Since I died 18 months ago? It's like a clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Oh, the end. This is a two for me. This is a two. Wow, Rainys face blasting. I think because I came into it really excited, it was a Cronenberg movie I hadn't seen before. I've really been enjoying his stuff particularly recently. No, I did not like this at all. I did not like this at all.
Starting point is 00:54:59 Okay. Every bit of it being held together with like paper clips and bubble gum shows? I will say that my, the memorable stuff from this movie that I remembered prior to watching it this time, is gonna bump this up to a five for me because I feel like those memorable shots are dope. The guy's head exploding, the like veins puffing out of the side of their heads while they're fighting, Michael Iron side. I would watch scanner cops. I don't know what it is it is. It is. It is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the is the m it is the m it is the m it is the like veins puffing out of the side of their heads while they're fighting, Michael Ironside. I would watch scanner cops. I don't know what it is or how it's going to work, but I'll watch it.
Starting point is 00:55:31 Just saying if the CW wants to get on the ball. Yeah, we'll help. We'll be consultants on scanner cops. We know a lot about cops, especially in the UK. So yeah, two out of five for wherewulf ambulance for scanners. A rare loss for Kronenberg from Katie. It's, it is a loss, and I have to tell you, this is a movie that we've done that I've probably paid the least attention to. You fell asleep during Predator.
Starting point is 00:56:02 I woke up. You turned off, well, you turned off the item and never went back to it. I paid attention for the, until I turned it off. Look, we've done a lot of movies. We're almost to 500. You can't expect me to watch all of them. You watched it, you came back. I just, I saw, yeah, you know. Katie, Alan. We got another email I'd like to read for you.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Thank you. Ahe, me, me, me. Hi Katie and Alan. Hello. I love your podcast. I love you. I found it by searching for podcast reviews of Deadstream because I thought that movie was so much fun. Deadstream.
Starting point is 00:56:47 We've done almost 500 movies. I don't remember 490 of them. Hey, Deadstream, let me think. Oh, that was the one the guy made in the haunted house where he... Yes. Oh, I said, look, you can't, they're all called the same thing. They're different versions of the same six words, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, thiiiiiii, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, they're all called the same thing. They're different versions of the same six words, okay? I'm having an existential crisis. No, I remember Deadstream, I like that one. I feel like Cronenberg has done his work if you've had an existential crisis.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Uh, uh, uh, I'm listening to episodes of your back catalog in no real order. And last night, I listened to Jason X. F. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi existential thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi existential thi thi existential thi existential thi existential thi existential thi existential thi existential thi thi existential thi existential thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi catalog in no real order and last night listen to Jason X Fucking great movie. Wait, no This person said fucking great movie or you're saying that. I did. He freezes that person's face and shatters their head. Stop. Or it's the two people with sleeping bags against the tree? I can't. Uh, in that episode, y'all talk about have Jeff Goldbloom can be creepy and people still think he's hot. Yeah. Unlike Christopher Walkin. Okay. Hard disagree. Walkin is one of the most beautiful people ever. I'd love to hear your takes on Deer Hunter, but I don't know
Starting point is 00:58:01 if it fits into the action movie pod. Ha ha. I've never seen Deer Hunter. Oh, you should just for the Pittsburghness of it. Whoa. Yeah, it takes place in Pittsburgh. And like, I lost my mind there for a while and then Alan made me do that Susan Sarandon movie where she can't say for which. Listen, I got no babies. I hadn't slept in like 46 hours. And I'm watching a horror movie about insomnia. And I'm like, thinking about Alan,

I'm bad at thinking things through. It was, it was a, I was tired.
Starting point is 00:59:52 You weren't, it wasn't your fault. But you also got mad at me over, uh, when evil lurks. I was mad because I needed to watch it and you were still watching it for like the third time. I don't know. I was like come on fucking guy you've already seen it. You gave me the shutter password. Katie, Alan. Can you give a quick shout out about the hats that we received in the mail? When I arrived this evening Alan handed to me a foe for Santa Claus hat. It's got ears. It's got eyebrows.
