Werewolf Ambulance: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast - Episode 8- I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Episode Date: December 15, 2014

As it turns out, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is maybe not-so-good...but then, what horror movie from the 1990s is? We delve into that topic as well as trying somewhat fruitlessly to deconstruct ...the plot of this movie in this week's episode. Some other points of discussion include: stuff that doesn't make any sense, other movies, 90s soundtracks, more other movies, the agelessness of David from "Roseanne", free admission to the strip club and how Jennifer Love Hewitt is utterly perfect. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello and welcome to another episode of WhereWoof Amulance. I'm Alan and I'm here with my co-host Katie. Hello Katie. Hi Alan. How are you? Good, how are you? Good. So we just watched I know what you Did Last Summer? Yes we did. It's a goodie. It's a goodie. It is. We actually just spent two days watching it because that's how fucking long it is.
Starting point is 00:00:36 It is not a well-paced film at all, isn't it? They didn't leave anything on the cutting room floor. It is, I would describe it as excruciatingly long. Well, I had no idea that this movie is based on a book? Yeah, Lois Duncan, right? Yeah, but it's not like a slasher. I guess not. I guess it's like a team book or something? Yeah, I think it's some Y-A fiction. Okay. Yeah, it definitely felt like a, like It felt like a little, little goryer
Starting point is 00:01:05 Encyclopedia Brown. Yeah. Our main character played by Jennifer Love Hew, who whom I will refer to only as J. LoHugh from here on out, definitely does a lot of sleuthing. She gets on the internet, uses net search. She interviews witnesses. She does her encyclopedia Brown routine pretty well.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Yeah, I saw this movie years ago, probably around the time that it came out. And I don't remember, I didn't remember anything about it except for the hookhand dude. And then it was based in an urban legend. Other than that, like, this was all new to me. Yeah, I mean, horror of the 90s has been probably not unfairly maligned for being pretty terrible. Yeah, I mean, it was coming out of the 80s from like sort of the heyday of all that stuff and it just, I mean, it just got too, too damn self-referential. Like, within the first 10 minutes of this movie, Jennifer Love, Hewitt's character, like, makes a reference to slashers and like why, how they represent, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, like, the, like, likehers and like why how they represent
Starting point is 00:02:05 like the dangers of sexuality to young women and stuff and it's just like yes I know I know these things pre-existed and now you have to reference them but yeah it was weird yeah and it is written by the movie was written by the same person who wrote scream yeah and this would have been I think the year after the year after okay I yeah I definitely rented this movie from Iggle Video on when my cousin Celeste when we were teens and I remember like being so scared after watching it like yeah that I like made her come in the bathroom to pee with me. I can see that. But now as an adult I'm really ashamed.
Starting point is 00:02:45 And I feel like I owe her an apology I'm sorry Celeste. You shouldn't have had to pee with me. It's not for there's no it's it is not scary. No it doesn't seem there wasn't any point where you felt like threatened for the people you're supposed to get like... I don't care about them. Yeah no. I mean I guess I care I care slightly I care slightly I care slightly I care slightly I care slightly I care slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly slightly s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s a the the the the tho to to to to to to the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their I don't care about them yeah no I mean I guess I care slightly for J. Lo Hugh because she's just so smoking hot in this movie I guess everybody is pretty smoking hot in this movie yeah this this town is beautiful yeah well no at the sound is ugly they are beautiful everyone else is a busted ass buster I don't know I don't know uh Sarah Michelle Gellar's sisters was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:03:25 She was beautiful. Brigitte Wilson, who's now Brigitte Wilson, Sampress. Oh, look at that. Married to Pete Zambrais, yeah. Famously Sonia Blade in the Mortal Kombat movie and other terrible things she's been in. Wow. Yeah, she's beautiful. Yeah, and David from Roseanne is beautiful.
Starting point is 00:03:44 He is in this movie. Yeah, she's beautiful. David from Roseanne is beautiful. He is in this movie. I love that he's hugely popular for Big Bang Theory, but he's still David from Roseanne. I refuse to acknowledge Big Bang Theory because I think it's a nerdsploitation. Sure. Yeah. I would agree with that. Yeah. I also don't really know anything about it other than that. And that, like, I don't know anyone who enjoys it. Also how has he not aged? He was the same age on Roseanne he's the same age seemingly on that
Starting point is 00:04:09 Big Bang Theory show. Did he look 35 at 13 and now he's just like he's just riding it? I don't know I think he's been 35 all along. God bless him. Yeah good for him. He's a weird character in this movie. Are we going to talk about the plot are we just just just just just just just just just. Are we just. Are we are to. Are we. Are we. Are we. Are we. Are we. Are we. Are we. Are. Are. Are. the. th. the. th. the. th. I. th. the. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I th. I th. I the. the. the. I the. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. the. I. the. I. I. I. I. I. the. I. I. I. I. the. the. the. I. the. I. the. the. I. the. the. the. I. the. I. the. the. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. I the. I. I. I. I. Are we going to talk about the plot? Are we just going to do some stream of consciousness here? I mean, was there like... Let's do like a high-level overview. Okay, take it. Okay, so... Because you know that I will just dig down to the bottom. I've been four hours talking about it.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Okay, so Jalo Hugh is dating Freddie to the th. Junior and his gorgeous cheekbones and she's best friends with Sarah Michelle Geller who is dating Delaware's own Delaware's own Ryan Philip. Philippe? Philip hey whom I refer to only as Ryan Philip. They're high school kids this is the summer before they're graduate yeah and it's the big 4th of July parade and Sarah Michelle Gellar is crowned Miss Croker. before they're graduating. They just graduated, yeah. And it's the big Fourth of July parade. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is crowned Miss Croker. Miss Croker. The Atlantic Croker is what this festival is named after.
Starting point is 00:05:12 We did not have to Google that. Yes, we did. Nope. Yes, we did. We are landlocked. So they get drunk, hit Oh, that's right. He was single handling a bottle of rum. Yeah, which is very disgusting.
Starting point is 00:05:28 F.P.J. is driving his car, and he hits a guy who isn't standing in the middle of the road in this seaside town where they live. They look at the guy, his face is all smashed up. They determine that he's dead without really ever checking any of his vital signs, which, okay, he's dead, I guess. They decide after like some rage deliberation, because Ryan Philip has serious rage issues. He's got that Delaware rage, ma'am, I know what he's feeling. Every line he has in those movies just like, grue! We're not a subtle people. No.
Starting point is 00:06:00 They decide that they're just going to throw his body in the water. Because the current, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, we' their, their, their, their, their, their, their. We. We' their, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, we. We. We. We. We. We. We. We. We. We. We're, we're their. We're their. We're their. We're their. We're their. We're their. their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their decide that they're just going to throw his body in the water because the current is strong, he'll get washed out to sea, which I don't understand because they're already on the ocean, so isn't that already the sea? Well, further out to sea. Sure, fine, further out to sea. So they take him down to the dock where the water seems shallow and unmoving. They go to dump him in, he awakes on the dock, rather than being like, oh shit, this is a terrible mistake, they punch him. He's kicking the shit out of him. He grabs Sarah Michelle Gellar's Miss Croker Queen crown off of her head and then they push him in the water. And then Ryan Philip has him in the water.
Starting point is 00:06:45 And then Ryan Philip has to dive in, grabs the Crooker Queen Crown, crooker croon, out of his hand. Guy opens his eyes underwater because everybody can open their eyes, see, scream, and breathe underwater in movies. In the salcy, salty, Atlantic Ocean. Yeah. And then he swims to the surface and is like, yo, he's dead? What, yeah, after Ryan Phillips gets the crown back. I guess he didn't see his eyes open. Maybe only we saw his eyes open. No, he did, because he was
Starting point is 00:07:14 fighting him for the crown. Yeah. Yeah. So then why did he not assume, why did he he he assume that he was dead? Why did he thiii? Why, why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? the th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He? He's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the swim back up or anything. Yeah, and then they found a body a little bit later. I don't know. But he didn't know that they found the body. There's a lot of plot holes here. Yeah, it's loophole central on this thing. Or plot hole central. So some of them go to college, some of them don't. And a year goes by, and it's summer, and it's th th th th th th th th and it's th th and it's th and it's the summer, and it's their they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. the. the. the. the. the. to. to. to. tode. the. the. the. they they they they they they they they they they they they start getting threats that someone knows what they did last summer. Right, and that they've all failed at their dreams post high school. Except seemingly Barry who is, or Barry is played by Ryan Philip, who is actually
Starting point is 00:07:54 just a college football quarterback. Oh okay, I didn't, oh yeah was he just home for the summer? Yeah I guess so. He was really doing it. So I guess what that that teaches you is that you're an asshole the ass ass ass ass ass ass ass the the th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, their, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. B. their, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, they, they, they, they, they, they. B, they, they, they. they, they. they. they. they. they. they. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi works out. Yeah, I mean, and then it's just a series of them trying to figure out who's sending them the letters, and then they start getting attacked, so they're trying to figure out who's attacking them. And then Johnny Galicki gets it for no apparent reason. He's like a weird red herring. Right, because they kind of, for a second, you're like, oh, maybe it's him that's sending them the letters. Which, I don't know why you would think that it was. I guess because he had been there earlier that night, but he really had no reason to... I couldn't figure out what his character was supposed to be. I think just a red herring. No, but I mean, like, was he a thugged. Was he, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, was a, a, a, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. He, th. He, th. He, he, he, he, he, he. He, he. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He was a. He was a. He was a. He was a. He was a. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He had. He was a. He was a poor kid. Yeah, he was the other side of the tracks. Oh. And because
Starting point is 00:08:46 that's why he was busting a FPJ's balls about getting up and he and hanging out rich kids. I see. Yeah, he was the other side of the tracks. But I mean, it was just like nerds, mad at nerds. There was no like believability of him being like the thuggy guy. No, it was very strange and every time he said mother fucker I was like ew. Don't say that David from Roseanne. Every time any of them like were swearing it just felt uncomfortable like those words just didn't fit well in their mouths. No other than Freddie Prince Junior I thought everybody's acting was passable. Sure. Freddie Prince Jr. was not passable. No. Every moment that he was on screen, he was kind of making a face like someone had just told him that there was free
Starting point is 00:09:31 admission to a strip club just down the street and he was like, what? And was looking down the street at it. Just like gazing down the street in awe. So when I said he was looking into the middle distance you pictured the strip club was right in that middle. And it was free day, free day and free lunch buffet. I bet he would clean up at the strip club. Yeah those cheekbones. Yeah he clearly only in this for the cheekbones. It's a very handsome gentleman. Very handsome. So there's that. There is. But other than that I I thought Jalo Hugh was untouchable the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the touchable. I thuable. Very tapu. Very t. Very t. Very t. Very t. Very th. Very th. Very th. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. Very. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. t. t. t. t. t. t. the t. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the than that I thought everybody was pretty good. I thought Jailohue was untouchable. I love her. I really do. I think she is, I think she is perfect. Okay. Yeah, I really
Starting point is 00:10:13 do. Yeah, other than her bangs, which were not great. But it was 1997. God damn the 90s were hard on fashion man. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. So much extra denim was involved in these outfits. It was insane. A lot of overalls. Yeah. A lot of dudes and tank tops too. Yeah. Not enough sleeves too much short I think was probably the issue in this movie fashion wise. Well it just reminded me how huge my pants were the night. Yeah I got them Jinko. No I never went full Jenko but my my levas were gigantic. Yeah I th. Well. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. So th. th. th. So th. th. th. So th. So thi th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So,'s. No, I never went full Jenko, but my Levi's were gigantic. I think everything was boot cut all the way up to the waistband. I'm pretty nuts.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Well, you have this by high boots. You gotta fit them all into it. My waiters, it was my fishing towel that I lived in. Oh, you just said waiters, that are just so many Ys in this movie, I feel. Yeah. Like, they start to be attacked, and it's by a man who wears like a slicker and a... Go on. No, no, no, no. No, it's just, it's the slicker that every man in town.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Yeah, a slicker in like a rain hat that a fisherman would wear because it's a fishing village or that perhaps the Gordon's fisherman would wear. And I don't know, like, so they keep seeing people everywhere wearing this outfit. It's fucking July in North Carolina. It is balls sweltering hot. And people are just standing on the side of the road, like on the side of the street watching a parade in the sun. It does not rain once in this movie. Yeah, I mean, I just don't, I don't think the people making this movie gave a shit.
Starting point is 00:11:55 I mean, that's why it felt like a young adult thing because they were just like, It doesn't, there's no like rationale to what's happening here. Like, there's a scene where the killer is chasing Ryan Felipe, I'm sorry Ryan Philip, in his own car the killer has taken his car keys and gotten into his car and is chasing him, which is, you're supposed to be like, oh, that's so ironic because that's his car man. He basically wrecks into a building on the main street of the town in the evening during summer in a beach town and nobody fucking comes to look. Like nobody. No, it's that North Carolina mind your own business mentality man. You know who's known for reminding their own business?
Starting point is 00:12:42 Yeah, they're just, I take care of my own, you take care of your own, you knock that building down with your automobile, I'm not going to bother you, sir. Not even going to look. This is not my time to step up. Just a lot of, a lot of mistakes. Not mistakes, a lot of confusing, confusing choices. Yeah, I mean, the whole, the whole, the whole, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, just felt like, it felt like Scream was a huge hit last summer. Can I do this again?
Starting point is 00:13:09 Without trying? Yeah, without try. Like, what can I, what do I got? What do I got? Yeah. I mean, you have, you know, they got it out. their today. their, I don't know, it's. people, kill them somehow. Most of them. Not even most of them.
Starting point is 00:13:25 No, kill half of them. I didn't think this was. And some of their friends and a sister that they don't like. And a random cop. This isn't going to, like, I was just like, oh, this isn't going to hit a Katie's body count at all, man. This is low stakes. I would have like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, to to the, th, th, th, th, to, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, to, th. th. th. thi, th. thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. And, th. And, th, th, th. And, th, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, thi. And, thi. And, thi. And, to. And, to. And, thi. And, this. And, this. And, this. And, this is, this is, this. And, thi. And, thiohue has to live. Right. I would have liked to have seen F.P.J. die.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Oh wow. He doesn't need he didn't need to live. Wouldn't it have felt a lot better if he died though? But then he wouldn't have gotten that snappy dialogue in the shower at the end of the morning. They don't even let him speak. They just heard talking to a phone. They're like, you know what, you're done. We're not giving you any more lines to butcher. Maybe he had just gone full-blown staring at that point they couldn't get him back. I love you, Julie. Like, do you? It sounds a really heartfelt guy. This was a rough time for a horror cinema, for sure, like. I know you hate screen. Should we start there? No, I mean, I don't, I just, I, it's, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, it's, uh, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, they, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they's, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, I, I, they're, they we start there? No, I mean, I don't. I just, it's, uh,
Starting point is 00:14:30 it's like the same reason that I hate the Grateful Dead. Scream like just beget so much shit that I can't, like I find it sort of insufferable for that. Like it just, it was like, it just opened the floodgates to like, nah, horror movies, blah, and just like, like, dissecting this genre that I love like totally without any real, like, with almost like malice to it. Like, this is dumb, let's just take this shit apart, who cares? And yeah, I don't know, I just felt like, but I mean, I think just in general, the 90s were, like today I went and looked at Wikipedia of just like what horror movies came out in the 90s.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Yeah, and it's pretty, I mean, it's bleak. Yeah, well, I feel like I talk a lot of smack about like right now, whether just remaking everything or everything's a sequel. That's exactly what it was in the 909, too, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th.... Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. th. that, th. that, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. of like sort of I mean this same year leprecon four came out in 1997. That movie won an Oscar. Lepricon four? Yeah best picture 97. No wait no no no no that was Titanic. Wait I knew it was something. The good horror movies that came out that year were like Anaconda? That's fun. It's really hilarious. Anaconda? Like... That... John Boyd does that weird accent? It's really hilarious. There's like, um...
Starting point is 00:15:50 No, that's it. No, they put a camera inside a snake. There's that, it's just inexplicable. But, I mean, compared to this movie, at least that one was fun. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, yeah, this, yeah. It has the real J-Lo too. No Hew it. Although, I've given the choice,
Starting point is 00:16:08 if I had to save one alone, then a Sophie's Choice moment, I'm taking J-Lo Hugh every time. She is perfect and I will hear no arguments to the contrary. I mean, event horizon came out in 97. I actually hate that movie. I love it. It's it. It, it. It, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it's th, it's th, it's th, th, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, I the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the, I the the the the th, I the the the the th, I th, I the the the the the th, I th, I the the th, I th, I th, I th, I th, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I that, I that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, I that, I'm, I'm thooooo, I'm tho, I that movie. I know people love it. I hate it. I love it. It's total garbage but I love that movie. That's another that's a movie where I watched and I was trying to figure out what accent everyone was doing. What is it? I don't know. They made it up. Yeah. They were all making up their own. Australian Belgians or something. Yeah. The Devil's the devil's advocate with Kino. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I the the devil's the devil's the devil's the devil's the devil's the devil's the devil's the devil. I the devil. I the devil. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I wouldn't call it a horror movie. It's like more of like a thriller. Okay. We can definitely watch it sometime if you want. It's a. It's
Starting point is 00:16:49 terrible. Kian who does a terrible accent in it too. There is something going on in 1997 now that I'm thinking about it. He does a terrible southern accent. Yeah, Ryan, Ryan, Ryan Philippe. Tryingtrying to, trying to hide that Delaware accent. Just sounded like he was like, sometimes he was from New York. What is a Delaware accent? You go har? You go haem? Haar. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And mimic came out that year? The Giamo deltotooro. Bugs start imitating people. Yeah. It's not bad. It got kind of but it. It's, bad. It got kind of butchered by the studio, so it's like he's actually now re-releasing it with, I don't know. And did you ever see the Russian movie Nightwatch? I don't think so. It's this really crazy
Starting point is 00:17:34 sci-fi horror, horror movie. I like how you say it as though it's one syllable, har. Like it was, you took a test that was Har. But yeah, so I mean it wasn't like, it wasn't the worst year for movies? Wasn't it? No. I feel like 2000. No, maybe like 99. I don't know. There was just, I mean it just kept like, as the 90s went on and just like, worse and worse. Well, do you think the the the the the the the the the the the of the of tu tu tu tu tu tu tu tu tu tu te te te te te te te te te te te te te te, te, te, te, te, te, it wasn't te wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't th, it wasn't th, it wasn't th, it wasn't th, it wasn't th, it wasn't th, th, th, th, th, th. thi wasn't thi te, te, te te te te te te te te te tea tea tea tea tea tea tea tea tea tea tea tea think the turn of the century has really improved things well the turn of
Starting point is 00:18:08 the cent for me like the turn of the century I feel like you just gave up you just gave up you just wash your hands and said no no because the 2000s frightened you seemingly the internet I think like I started getting into Japanese and French and Korean and like That's true. So there's like this whole world now that sort of like just wasn't accessible. An Irish. Remember how much you like stitches? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And it gave you hope for the future? Yeah, I feel like it became easier to make independent movies I think in the 2000s. That's true too. So kind of like, we're like, it, th, it, th, it, it, like, it, it, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi of like we're kind of getting back to that 80s, 70s, or like for a pretty small budget you can make a decent movie. Yeah, in the 90s it was kind of blockbuster or bust. Yeah, yeah I just saw Baba Duke or the Babaduke the Australian movie and that's not a huge budget movie but like it looks beautiful and it's well done. And everybody fucking loves it. Yeah and I don't know if
Starting point is 00:19:07 that's because of the climate of movies that like it seems like the movies that are usually the garbage movies at this point the ones that you have to track down on you know streaming and that stuff so. I mean I'm really thinking about the 90s in general and I can think of like maybe five good horror movies. Okay. 90s. You're not gonna name me to name them are you? I just went three. I went three of the five. Okay, Jacob Slatter is one of my favorite horror movies of all time and that's like 92 I think. Yeah. Um, Frankenhooker came out in like 90 or 91. I don't know that. So good. Such a good movie. People under the stairs, I think we've mentioned on this podcast before, I really like. I think you are a fan of that one as
Starting point is 00:19:49 well. Yeah. Um, Cemetery man. I've never seen. Man, we might have to do that movie. It's fantastic. Is it? It's really good. What else? What else? What else? Blair. Blu-Wish project, which I believe we have th I know you probably are not real psyched on that, but I think it's actually, you know, I mean it spawned the whole found footage thing for better or for worse. Right. I think it does it pretty, pretty well. Dead Alive, Candy Man. Yeah, there were some pretty good movies that came on the 90s. Silence of the Lambs. We are not not looking at a list right now. Hocus Pocus, 1993, got some Bette Midler up in here. You know how I feel about her? She could fuck right the hell off. I don't know why. She knows what she did. Did she do it with horses? I don't understand. Yeah, I don't think I'd call hocus focus a heart. No. thinneneous is a really a good the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th th th th th th thin the the the the the tho' to the the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. th. th. to to to th. th. to to to to th. to to to to to to thi. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. to to thoo. the. their th don't think so. Ernest scared stupid? No.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Ravenous is a really good movie. Is it? Yeah. That's 99 though. That's practically the 2000s. Yeah. Just kidding. Bride of Chuckie, 98. Well, I guess everything sucks. Tales from this Cripp Demon Night. I've actually never seen Demon Night. I've actually never seen Demon Night but I think I had the soundtrack, and I feel like it was entirely full of white zombie, which... Wait a bit, and I feel like I saw that a couple years ago at the exhumed 24-hour horror movie marathon thing. Oh yeah?
Starting point is 00:21:14 They showed that. Was it any good? It was fine. You mentioned soundtrack. The soundtrack for this movie is really weird. Super weird! It starts off with typo negative covering summer breeze? Yeah, summer breeze. So weird. Starting off the movie, such a weird choice. Yeah, of like a beautiful shot of like the ocean and cliffs and that's...
Starting point is 00:21:35 Which to me totally looked like the... I thought they were on the west coast. It didn't look like Oregon or something. Yeah, yeah. It didn't look like North Carolina. It probably was not North Carolina. I don't think there are cliffs in North Carolina. I don't know. I guess I have no reason to think that, but I'm going to stand by my statement. So. And then there was the cover of Hush by Kula Shaker?
Starting point is 00:21:58 There's also, there are some songs on the soundtrack that were definitely not in the movie. Yeah. Clumsy th the th th th th th th th th th. And th th th th th th. I know that song because it comes up on my satellite radio all the thing. Well, that's the thing is you were... I was 13, 14 years old. So this would have been like very culturally relevant to you. Yeah. I just wanted to grow boobs like Jalo Hughes, you know. Yeah. I I that. I that. I th. I th. Starting point is 00:22:26 life. I didn't do shit about anything. So I was not paying attention to Kula Shaker. Me either, really. I gotta be honest with you. What was the other band you said you knew? Oh, our lady peas. They were just like an alt rock band on the radio at that point in like the mid-90s yeah and like the off-springer on this and who else soul asylum whom I just saw last summer
Starting point is 00:22:49 they were fucking fantastic on a way train bro oh no somebody to shove yeah yeah they're trick song where they made you think they were like a heavy grunge band and then you got the rest of the record you're like what the fuck yeah I love that song I tho the th th th th the th th th th th th th th the the th th th the th th th th the th th the the the th th th th the th tho tho tho tho tho tho. tho. Why are we just reading Wikipedia for this episode? I'm just closing this. Because this movie sucked. There's not a lot of substance to discuss in this movie. It's just... I wish the Red Herrings had been more.
Starting point is 00:23:20 I wish I'd cared, I guess. I wish everything had just been more. Yeah, except for the minutes of the the movie, I wish they had been less, or fewer, I guess. I just, like, I don't know. I didn't care who was murdering them because I wanted them to be murdered. Here's the thing. Yeah. Teenagers are shitheads. You hit a man on the road and you push him into the water and he's not dead. Right.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Kind of get what you have coming to you. Well, I mean, I think that's a, to go back to the 70s and 80s, I think that's why they always cast 35 year olds in the teenager so you didn't fucking hate everybody when you walked into the movie theater, like, you know. man this was no I'm just gonna it's not a good movie no I feel like I would I would have enjoyed watching scream way more than this yeah I think probably I actually like Scream so I mean I know the meta thing really bothers you but I think I love Nev Campbell in it and skeet all rich is like the poor man's Johnny Depp so that's cool well this movie I could probably full my fulna
Starting point is 00:24:20 into thinking it's Johnny Deft and so I could prolong a prolong a prolong the life for prolong the the this I this I this I could prolong I could prolong I could prolong I could if she skied over she would just get some jobs. Is he even still alive I don't know. I don't think I could tell the difference between him and the dude who played the Joker so. Oh he's definitely dead. Yeah he's ledger. Yeah he's ledger. Yeah he's ledger. Yeah I feel like I feel like this. That guy is not even American. Which one? Keith Ledger. Yeah, is, I don't know what skeet-skete is all. Is he American? Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:50 I don't know anything about this dude. Okay, well, I'm just saying, the poor man's Johnny dead. That's all. Um, yeah. Yeah, but I feel like this movie. the movie, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, I. the, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I. the, I. I don't, I don't, I don't th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I don't th. I don't th. I don't th. I don't, I don't, I don't make the cut. Yeah, well yeah, Neff Campbell and Jail O'Hue were part of five. Right, right, right, right. They're both on on sad, sad, sad, TV show sad. Yeah, my parents are dead. Is that what that show was about? It was tall my hate that show. Yeah, God, yeah this movie. I feel like it probably it's had the biggest budget of any of the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies thages thages thi thi that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I that's that's that. Yeah, I that. I that. I that. I that. I that. I that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that thi thi thi thi that that that they that that that that that that they're that's that's that's that's that's that's that that's that's that that th any of the movies we've seen at this point and like the least going on in it like. Yeah there were no effects to speak of. No really surprising. Can we talk about how the villain okay so let's talk about who the actual villain is? Okay so you're made to believe that throughout the course of the movie that the guy they killed this guy and that a member of his family or one of his friends is coming after them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them them the the the the the the the the their. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. their. Yeah. their. their. their. Yeah. their. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their. their. There. There. There. There. There. Yeah. their. Yeah. their. Yeah. I their. I their. I their. I their. I their. their. their. their. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their the believe that throughout the course of the movie that the guy they killed
Starting point is 00:25:45 this guy and that a member of his family or one of his friends is coming after them because he or she knows what they did last summer. Hence the title. But what actually happened is the guy that they think they killed isn't the guy that they killed. They couldn't tell who they killed because they had mashed up his face so badly in the car th th th th th th th th th th th th the th the car th the car th the car the car th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi and thi thi thi and thi and thi and thi and thi and thi and thi and thi and thi and th th th th th th this their this their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their thi. thi. the the the. the. theea. their theea. their their their their thea. thea. thea. the. their they killed isn't the guy that they killed. They couldn't tell who they killed because they had mashed up his face so badly in the car accident. And the guy that they had actually killed, the guy that they had actually thrown into the water was, ah, fuck it. He was the guy who killed the guy that they thought they had killed. Because that guy, because he thought that that guy had killed his daughter. That makes perfect. So that's why he had the Susie tattoo, the name of the woman who was killed, who they thought that tattoo was on the guy that they killed. But it wasn't, it was on... The guy's... Fuck. Yep. So there you have it. So there's three consecutive fourth of Julys. the the the th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the thatuoom... thatuoose. thatu. thatu, thatu, that that that that that that that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's the the the the the the the the the the the that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's th. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So, th. So, th. th. th. th. the th. the the first one, which happens before the movie takes place, a girl named Susie
Starting point is 00:26:51 is killed in a car accident, and the car was being driven by her boyfriend, David. In the second fourth of July, is the one where we see the accident happen. Our protagonists, our beautiful people hit, the person they think is David, throw him into the water and they think he's dead. The third, fourth of July is the one that most of the movie takes place in which they are being stocked by the person that they think is like a member of David's family. Well, it's not a member of David's actually, who is the person that they actually hit, he had killed David at some point previous.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Yeah, that same night, I think. Oh, that's convenient. Yeah, and he hid David's body pretty much the same area. That's super convenient. Yeah, no. They were like, do you think they just wrote that down on a piece of paper and they were like, yeah, that makes sense? I can only th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do th. Do it th. Do th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that, thi, that, that, that, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I that's, I that's, I'm that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, yeah, that makes perfect sense. I can only assume they got real high watched a bunch of scooby-do. Like, I don't know, we'll make the shit work.
Starting point is 00:27:46 In a world where there can be talking dogs. Everything makes fucking sense. Yeah. So the bad guy is us? For watching this. For making you watch it. For making you listen to us talk about it. I just just the the the the the the the the the the th. I th. I th. I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. thi. the. thi. thi. thea. thea. theckeckeckeck. thi. thiolk. thiolk. thiolk. thoome. thia. thia. thia. thia. thia. thia. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. ta. toe. ta. toe. toe. toe. toea. toea. tea. tea. toea. tea. toea. tea. toea. tea. tea. tea. ta. to us talk about it. I'm really don't know. Yeah, this is sort of a cautionary tale. Don't watch this. This fucking movie. I just spent $3 on it on Amazon. And when you like buy something on
Starting point is 00:28:12 Amazon too, it's like you have 23 hours and 59 minutes to watch this. I just spent 22 hours watching it like. You're gonna wake up tomorrow the TV is going to be on still counting down. No, it's done. It's over. It's gone. It's done. The time we're done recording this, my 24 hours will be over. So long this movie is. So the bad guy is Susie's dad. You're still trying to piece the things together. I'm or whatever. Right. But it's so fucking dumb, I can't even describe it. So why don't you try? Yeah, I mean. You're better at this than I am.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Freddie Prince Jr. gets knocked off the boat as J. Loheu is being chased by our killer. I like that inflection. J. Loheu. J. Lohue. The killer who is just at this point all grins and arms held high. So Freddy Fiss Jr. does some fucking Rube Goldberg device to get back on to the ship. Takes him 25 minutes of the movie. While Jelow is like rolling around and in the bottom of the boat, she doesn't know what boats are. I don't know what I'm
Starting point is 00:29:25 looking at. So much ice on the boat too. So eventually the killer's raising his hand up to hit Jay Lohue, Freddie Prince Jr. hits a switch, some rope grabs the dude's arm, carries him up, rips his hand off. With the hook in it. With the hook in it. Two or three hours later, the movie, to, to, to, th, to, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the th, th, the the the th, the thi, the thi, is, is, is, is, is, is, is the the the the the the the the the the the, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is the killer, is, is, is the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the they.e, is the they.e, is the thi.e, is throwne, is throwne, throwne, throwne, together, throwe, together, throwe, throwe, throwe, is the.e, up with like the cops bringing this net out of the water and the hook hand is stuck to it. Flash forward to the jump scare that got me. It totally got it. At the end of the movie Jennifer Love Hewitt is taking a shower or about to take a shower.
Starting point is 00:29:59 She walks into the steamyest bathroom on earth. Someone has written, I still know on a piece of glass, and then the fisherman jumps back through it. Yeah. It's so fucking dumb. Yeah, it's really stupid. Yeah. But again, I mean, for young adult fiction or whatever, it makes perfect sense. It's fine, you know?
Starting point is 00:30:15 But if, but point being if it was not a slasher novel, clearly they weren't saying terribly true to the source of material. Yeah. So maybe they could have written like a better ending. Yeah, I don't. I mean, they're just sending it up for, I wonder what you did last summer and then, yeah, last summer. I have a- Summers, summer breeze. I mean, what are the title, what's the second one?
Starting point is 00:30:42 I still know what you did last summer. I don't, I spit on your last summer. I don't want this since I was a teenager but I watched the sequel a couple years ago right after I got my wisdom teeth out. It was like on-demand and I had just taken like a bunch of vicidin and watch
Starting point is 00:31:11 the sequel and like I can't remember if the twist in it is as bad as I remember that it is or if I was just like really on narcotics. Should I should th. Should I should she is fantastic. She's sassy. She's sassy. She's a good actress though, because she was Moisha all those years. So she is like, she actually has some acting jobs. So she's decent. I never thought I would get the chance to say she was Moisha all those years. Where will fanlets making dreams come true.
Starting point is 00:31:58 The twist is that the killer is Jelo Hughes new boyfriend because she because she has broken up with FPJ who does not appear in this film. And the new boyfriend's name is something Benson, Ben's son, Ben being the name of the killer in the first movie. Wow. Yeah. I think I saw that and I was like, had like a bra filled with ice strapped to my chin and I was like, this is so fucking stupid. Yeah I think that's it I don't think I'm making that out.
Starting point is 00:32:32 So that's the I know what you did the summer franchise and I hate this franchise. And I hate this franchise so mad at it right now. Well at least they all went on to have careers, I guess. I don't think Ryan. They're fucking gorgeous. Ryan Philip really didn't. I don't think he's done much. He was in like cruel intentions in the 90s. I don't know if that was before or after this.
Starting point is 00:32:54 It was like around the same time. And I feel like he kind of dropped off the face in the pretty much in the same town that his parents do. So every time I go to see my parents and we're driving somewhere my mom points out where his parents live. Oh really? He probably lives there now you should check them out. Yeah, but yeah F. F. P.J. and SMG are married I guess. F. P.J. And S. M. G. I'm a the American G. W. I'm a. P. J. I. I. I. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. P. Yeah. She was Buffy. She was in the American Gouan, the American The Grudge. She was in the Scooby-Doo franchise?
Starting point is 00:33:31 Wasn't Freddy Prince Jr. in those two? I think that was Matthew Lillard. Or was he the other guy? Was he the huntie? No, it's not. I don't know. Who cares? All right. Numeric rating. I'm going first. I'm knocking this one out of the park.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Go. You get no one. Wow, really? Yeah, this movie sucked. You're giving it 0.5 better than God Monster of Indian Flats, which had no plot, no sense. No dialogue. I'd watch it again before I watch this movie. You're a sick man.
Starting point is 00:34:06 It's, you have, you have sick feelings. Because like, you're, your sentimentality towards movies that are bad. You, you're a sick person. I've, at least when they're bad, I feel like someone's trying. Like, this was like, they're like, you know who gave it their all in this JLo hue? She did. She gave it her all. She acted her little heart out in this movie. Tiny heart.
Starting point is 00:34:30 She's the smallest. She's a tiny, tiny. She's like a... She's put her in her pocket. Yeah, feed her to ice cube? She's tiny. She said, feed her to ice cube. A fie. Like a little sugar glider right in your bucket. Oh, I see. I thought you were still talking about an anaconda. I don't know what you're eating her to ice cream.
Starting point is 00:34:46 I have no idea. I am not a monster, despite claiming to be on this. I think I'm just mad that there was so much money. There was obviously like time spent. And it just like this is longer than the other. There's not like there's nothing on the screen. No. Do you know he's on the screen? Well, yeah. They're pretty people. I really feel that she would...
Starting point is 00:35:14 I feel like it was well acted. I really do. I feel like for the what they did well with what they were given. And for that, I don't feel like people getting killed with the hook, even though the hook killings weren't particularly... Right. Although, here are a few things that I did like. I liked the cop getting killed with a hook, which we didn't really talk about, but who cares? He gets it in the gut, and it comes out of his mouth real gross, like, and then later,
Starting point is 00:35:42 SMG's sister is like dragged along the floor with a hook, which I thought was a really nice scene. And the Roseanne kid gets it in the jaw. Yeah, I missed that though, because I was like doing something else. I don't know. You'd already lost interest in the room. Well, it had been on for about 16 hours at that point. I needed a nap.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Someone had to to take shifts and you were on that shift. The length was really abrasive to me in case you couldn't tell. Uh, four and a half. Okay. Yeah, I'm sticking with my one. That's fine. I'm not trying to change your mind. You know, I have sentimentality towards this film too, of pulling my bell curve back. I'm sort of tugging back. Your feelings are problematic for this podcast. Feelings are problematic in my life.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Oh, we should cut this part. No, wait, that part stays in. Well, there you have it. The 90s. Yeah, we're gonna have to do something else from the 90s to redeem this game. You know, the 90s needs to do something to redeem itself and it's too late. Yeah, they're back in a big way though. Look at all those high-waisted pants that have made their way back in. Yeah, crop tops. I mean, we could do child's play too. Is that the one where they go they go, the, their, their, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the, th, their, their, to, their, to, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, to to to their, their, to their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, tip, their, tipe, tipe, toge, toge, toge, toge, toguui. tipe, their, their, their, their, their where they go to the military school or is that the one where they go, it ends in the factory? I've only ever seen the first child's play. Oh, I think three is the one of the military camp.
Starting point is 00:37:11 Childplay two is decent. Childs play two is the first one with Jennifer Tilly, right? I think so. I think that scared the shit out of me when I was 10. But then this scared the s scared the shit scared the shit scared the shit scared the shit scared the shit scared the shit scared s scared scared scared scared scared scared scared s scared scared scared scared s scared scared scared s scared scared s scared scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s scared s- the shit s- the shit s- the shit shit shit shit shit shit shit out the shit shit shit out out out to me to me the shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out s scared s scared s scared shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s- out the shit out of me the the shit out of me to me the to me to me the the the the shit out the shit out the shit out the shit out out the shit out the shit out the shit out the guy at the show I mean when I was 14 porcelain standing there in the bathroom all I'm peeing I'm so sorry But now you never have to watch this movie again.
