Starting point is 00:00:08 Welcome to Who New with Matt Stewart, the show where the guests are right the wrong answers. I'm the titular Matt Stewart. Our first guest is performing at the Bill Murray in London on the second and fourth of October. It's Lloyd Langford. Hello. That's exciting. That's a fun venue. Not just me.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Yeah, you and Anne. Yes, my current partner. Current. That's a tough recording. I mean, this could be the run of shows where it all falls apart. Yeah, it could be actually. TBC. Our second guest this week is performing at the Melbourne Fringe from the 30th of September.
Starting point is 00:00:43 It's Lauren Edwards. Hello. Doing a show about pyramid schemes. Yeah. Obviously. Yep. Yep. And women in business empowering.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Sure. Someone messaged me the other day and they were like, oh, I thought it was a real business thing. And I was like, do I look like I know dick about business? You want to disempower them actually. And finally. We've got from the Maron has a crush on podcast Maron May. Hello. So good to have you back.
Starting point is 00:01:15 This is a real battle of the continents. Actually, as I think about it more, it's two continents really, isn't it? Is Wales part of Europe? Geographically, yes. Yes. But not since Brexit. No. Sorry to bring that up.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Too soon, surely. Yeah. It's not good for the EU party. passport, I guess. No, I, yeah, we're going back to the UK and I had to now, my daughter had to get a UK passport, even though she has an Australian one. Right. Because they recently changed the law in the UK.
Starting point is 00:01:55 If you don't claim your citizenship, then they snatch it away from you. Oh, right. How old is your daughter? Four and a half. Did you have to take one of the fighters? Threat to national security. She comes over here, takes our jobs. How dare she?
Starting point is 00:02:12 She has an Australian passport when she's like a fat little baby. That's cute though. And now a British one where she's a grumpy four-year-old. I love that kind of glow up though. You aren't allowed to smile. All right, so the way this show works is ask a relatively obscure trivia question. Our contestants have to write a convincing fake answer. I then read their answers well as they're one and have to get.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Yes, which one is correct. And the first one comes from listener Sabella from Sydney, Australia. And the question is, what is the green eggs and ham hypothesis? What is the green eggs and ham's hypothesis? Does that question make sense? What is the green eggs and ham? Yeah, someone's got a theory. It's like a theory type thing.
Starting point is 00:02:57 And it's called the green eggs and ham. From Dr. Seuss. Yeah, named for Dr. Seuss's book, Green Eggs and Ham. But it's not a theory that Dr. Seuss put out there. No, it's sort of named after. The hypothesis. Yeah. When I put it, yeah, does it, do you even know how to begin to answer this?
Starting point is 00:03:16 No, well, I'll have a sweat there, right. Fantastic. That's a real, that's the Welsh attitude, isn't it? Is that like, is it? I don't know. How would you say a hypothesis? It's very hard to say even the word. I'd say theory.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Yeah. Yeah. Theory. Yeah. Hypofysis. One must always, is that how sad? Oh, no. One must always.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Yeah, it could be. That's so scientific. Yeah. It's a big word for me. Yeah. Well, I don't think you can use that exact phrasing now. Oh, okay. I love that it's the first question and we're already stumped by mechanics of grammar.
Starting point is 00:03:54 While they're writing their answer, I'll explain how the scoring works. I get one point if your fake answer is guessed by the other contestant. Another point if you correctly guess the answer. And by the way, I'm also playing as the house. Also I've put into my own fake answers for each question with the help of the question, and we get a point for each one of those that a guest choose. So each of us can score up to three points per round. And yeah, apparently the house has a bit of an advantage.
Starting point is 00:04:15 So to help out the guests, they get triple points in the final round while the house does not. Most of our questions come from our great Patreon supporters if you want to submit a question, sign up on any level of via. Patreon.com slash two going on pod linked in the show notes. The answer is in for question number one. What is the green eggs and ham hypothesis? Just because it sounds funny doesn't mean you should eat it. When visiting a foreign country, always try the local cuisine. That's option two, option three.
Starting point is 00:04:44 You'll be shown more respect if you call yourself a doctor even in non-medical context. That's great. Option four, a theory that strict limitations rather than total freedom gives the best creative output. Option five, the theory that using a rhyming pattern in a block of prose helps the reader retain the information up to 45. percent longer than is uh than it without rhyme or finally the idea that people are more likely most of the time to choose multiple choice answers when they rhyme um all right so green eggs and ham doesn't rhyme does it all i know is something about sam i am okay yeah dr sue's rhymes i do not want green eggs and ham but i do not want them sam i am i think it's only rhymes i think it's just ham and sam
Starting point is 00:05:34 You know what? The German translation. They did a literal. What is ham in German? Shinken. I do not want green eggs and shinkin. Yeah. It doesn't have the same ring to it, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:05:46 Yeah. I'm not here to defend the German translation. I think you should do the whole poem in German. Okay. Okay. Go. And go. Sorry, can you read the options again?
Starting point is 00:06:00 Yes. Just because it sounds funny doesn't mean you should eat it. Okay. When visiting a foreign country, always try the local cuisine. You'll be shown more respect if you call yourself a doctor even in non-medical context. Theory that strict limitations rather than total freedom give the best creative output. The theory that using a rhyming pattern in a block of prose helps the reader retain the information up to 45% longer. Or the idea that people are more likely most of the time to choose multiple choice answers when they rhyme.
Starting point is 00:06:30 I hate that last one. I love that last one. I mean, that's the German-Australian theorem. You just made a rhyme, whoever wrote that. But not in German, I guess. It doesn't rhyme. Also, the sentence is hard to say. Sorry, it's not my turn.
Starting point is 00:06:47 It is your turn. Oh, it is my turn? Okay, cool. Well, I hate that last one. Okay. Putting a line through that. Also, there was one that the creative output I didn't fully understand,
Starting point is 00:07:00 so I'm going to go with that one. Okay, great. That's the Myron May theory. You don't understand it. Go for it. Yeah. All right, Lauren, what do you think? Well, last time I chose answers just because I hoped they were true and that didn't really
Starting point is 00:07:14 serve me. So at this time, I'm not going to do that because I really wanted the one about multiple choice being, rhyming to picking it if it rhymes. I think that's very cute. But I don't think it's that because if I like it, probably means it's wrong. Okay. I'm probably going to go, I agree with Maron, I don't really understand the limitation ones, so it's probably that.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Go on that one of that. Love it, all right. I am going to go the one that was you retain information, if it right, you make you miss. Locked in. Here's who wrote the answers. The last one that Maron hated, that was me, and it took me too long to make it wrong. So, honestly, fair enough. I liked it.
Starting point is 00:07:57 And I still butcher it. I'm like, I'll put commas in the right spot so I get the rhythm right. It was a noble attempt. But I'm glad to know that it was not worth the effort. I hate that answer, but I love this podcast. Just because it sounds funny, doesn't mean you should eat it. Great. I think that's a great theorem.
Starting point is 00:08:16 It's just not this one. That was Maron. When visiting a foreign country, always try the local cuisine. That's another great theorem. That was Lloyd. Nice. I nearly picked that one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:27 That you will be. he's shown more respect if you call yourself a doctor even than non-medical context. That was Sabella, the question writer. That's great. Now, Lloyd went for the one that rhyming patterns will help you retain information more. That was Lauren. Well done. Good job.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And Lauren and Myron were correct. Yes. What a flying start. So it basically, it comes from the fact that apparently Dr. Seuss's editor bet with him that he could write a popular book with 50 words or less. And so that's the limitation. And so the theory is if you're like, you can write a book about anything, you won't write as good of a book as if you have a limitation.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Yeah. If someone said to me, write a joke about literally anything, I'd be like, couldn't do it. Couldn't do it with a gun to my head. But if someone said write a joke about rhyming. A starting point, yeah. Yeah. Totally. Easy.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah. I reckon it rings true as a hypothesis. Also, every time I read Dr. Susan, I'm like, man, that guy has a, some limitations. He could just really hear that. One of which was racism. Oh, is that right? Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Some of those books no longer in print. Okay. Oh, really? Oh, I didn't know that. All the illustrations have been changed. Question two. Comes from Tyler Brown from Charlotte, North Carolina. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And this one, you just got to come up with a species of moth. Moth. Yes. Lassah Maram was on, said, told me she loves moths. So I'm like, next time you're on, I'm going to do a moth question. Just the name of the common name for the species of moth. So you don't have to describe it or anything, just the name. And I've been thinking about it ever since and definitely prepared for this
Starting point is 00:10:10 and didn't just say, let me do it a moth round. I mean, that's an unfair advantage. Yeah. I have not thought about it. While they're writing their answers, here's some more info on that hypothesis. Sabella writes, the green eggs and ham hypothesis, or the constraints principle,
Starting point is 00:10:28 posits that strict limitations and boundaries rather than total freedom actually boosts creative output. Coined by psychologist, how good is this name? Dr. Katrina Hort-Trump, it gets his name from Dr. Seuss's famous 1960 book, Green Eggs and Ham, which he wrote after his publisher, bet him he couldn't write an engaging children's book that small children were loved using no more than 50 words, which could be repeated as often as needed.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And the result became a classic. I think it speaks for itself. Although I don't know if I've read it recently You know information at hand Maybe there's some crook stuff in there I've read it recently Yeah He's absolutely adamant
Starting point is 00:11:09 That he doesn't want green eggs in harm And then he tries it and likes it Okay Spoiler alert Oh my God Well don't need to read it again Yeah There's a bit in our vaguer memory
Starting point is 00:11:23 He's like I will not do it with a goat And it's like So, yeah, that sounds out of context. It's like, why you doth protest too much, mate? The answers are in for question number two. Which of these is a real species of moth? The fat pygmy moth.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Big breasted banshee. Clothes horse Morillis. Spectacled titillator. Lettuce shark or the flying doormat. Oh, my. God, I love all of them. Yeah, me too. Can we pick all of them?
Starting point is 00:12:01 They're all got to be true. The flying doormat. And the banshee. It's your go first, Lauren. What do you reckon? Can you read them again, please? In reverse, all you got the flying door mat. Yep.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Lettus shark. Spectacled titillator. Closed horse, Morillus. Big breasted banshee. Big-breasted moth is very funny to think about. It's like, you're going to fly with a flyer. Oh, the fat pygmy moth. I mean, they're all so good.
Starting point is 00:12:32 I love anything with big, big breast or big chest, big breast. That's great. Flying Dormat, I love. But again, that's what I would want to be true. But I'm trying to go against my natural instinct. Something the Tiddlerator. I wish that was my name. What was that one again?
Starting point is 00:12:50 Spectacled titillator. And then the lettuce shark? Lettuce shark. Lettus shark. Oh, what the hell. Hell, let's look in lettuce shark. That's fun. Okay, locked in.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Boyd? I, not for the first time, I'm going to go for the spectacle titulator. You've got a top. Maron? I'm going to go with the flying door mat in honour of the sitting hat mat. I don't know. It's so good. I mean, if it is real and I got that wrong, I'll be upset because that's great.
Starting point is 00:13:26 All right. dancers. The fat pigmy moth. That was Lloyd. That's great. It's also a beautiful image. It's a chunky moth. I love it.
Starting point is 00:13:34 I just, I thought it was too desperate. Like the pick me moth? I'm not picking you. Pick me. Big breasted banshee. That was Lauren. That's good.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Clothes horse, Morillis. That was Maron. That's great. The flying door mat. Maron went for that. I'm afraid that's the house. Oh, it's so good.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Well done. That was the name. I just stole from the name of it. The nickname. of an old Aussie rules footballer. Oh, you just wanted to put Matt in there, no? Oh, true. Can I also tell you, I thought you had written that.
Starting point is 00:14:04 I thought if anyone would come up with the flying door mat, surely that's Maron. That's a moth lover. That's a moth lover right there. And I can see it. I know exactly what it looks like. Yeah, same. Lloyd went for the spectacle titillator. That was Tyler, the question writer.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Also the house. And that means Lauren is correct. This is a lettuce shark. Yes. This strategy is working for me. It's incredible. The lettuce. The lettuce, I get the lettuce bit, you know, the lettuce leaves and moth wings.
Starting point is 00:14:31 But the shark, I haven't even looked it up yet. It does not live up to the name. It's always disappointing. I think I said this last time. I feel like moth names are like bird names. It's the Wild West. You can do whatever you want. I think I once knew there was a moth called like the Lady Shipton or something like that.
Starting point is 00:14:49 And I was like, what's I got to do with a moth? I've been reading about moths a bit. I tell you what. Do you want some moth? It looks, yes. I'd say it looks very dull like a moth, but as a caterpillar looks pretty sick. Oh, that's lovely. That's what a gorgeous caterpillar.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Yeah. Of course, that's where they're, look, I missed that fact that that's where they come from. But apparently when, you know, moths get really irritated when there's a light, and apparently it's because they're navigated by keeping the moon, the light of the moon on their back. So every time they see a light, they think it's the moon, which I think is pretty stupid. Like, lights have been around for so long, man. Come on there. It's time to evolve. Yeah, but I also love that.
Starting point is 00:15:28 I'm like... Well, you know, when they were lining up to God to give out things, he gave him big breasts and little brains, I guess. Oh, wow. So the house gets two points out round, and Lauren scores again. So with two rounds down, Lloyd's yet to score. Maron on one, the house on two-bound front. Lauren's on three points.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Question three comes from Emma Perton from Perth in Australia. And the question is, what was the name of the 1980s racehorse? side by a docile boy and silver sails. Just got to come up with the name of an 1980s racehorse. Oh, what was its parents' names? A docile boy and silver sails. Come the flying door mat. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:16:15 And Lauren, I'll warn you, we've already, in a previous episode, had the race horse with the correct answer, it was big tits. A French horse. So the French authorities didn't know what it meant. So it was this French race going out and big old big tits. Which I don't think we'll ever top that. I mean, that is my nickname from high school. So I love that.
Starting point is 00:16:43 While you're writing your answers, here's some more info about lettuce shark. Tyler writes that it's a four to five centimeter wingspaned moth known for its ferocious appetite for lettuce when it's a caterpillar. It's not even nether. named after, yeah, that makes sense. It eats a shark, like, eats a lot, I guess, and lettuce. Sure.
Starting point is 00:17:03 They're struggling for names, I reckon. As an adult, it has dark grey four wings with dark lines and brownish hind wings, while caterpillars are white with yellow and orange stripes and black spots. Native to most of Europe. I double-checked, it's not in Wales. I'm like, because it could be, you'll be like, yeah, the Lannis shark. How did you not know that? The answers are in for question number three.
Starting point is 00:17:32 What is the name of the 1980s racehorse side by Dossol Boy out of Silver Sales? Jemay Boy Horse. Lazy Susan. Spunky girl. Maybe she's barn with it. Stop. Hoofhearted. Or she sells Seychelles getaways.
Starting point is 00:17:54 All right. It's up to you. One of these is a 1980s racehorse. Can you repeat them again, please? Jemaya Boy Horse. Lazy Susan. Spunky Girl. Maybe she's barn with it. Hoof-hearted. Well, she sells Seychelles getaways. 1980s. See, I was on a panel show once and Hoofhearted was a, name that the footballer Wayne Rooney tried to name a racehorse
Starting point is 00:18:29 and it got denied. Because it had already been used or because it was Because it's It sounds like coo farted. I never put that together. I didn't even think of that. I think that was a fact from the show. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:44 So I'm going to discount that one. Okay. And I reckon that cheeky person from Perth has put that one in. See, 1980s, I feel like that might might have been the height of Maybelline's
Starting point is 00:18:59 popularity. So as ridiculous as it sounds, I'm going to go for maybe she's barn with it. But I'll even just say it out loud, it feels like too long a name for a horse. That's a long horse. Yeah, do you often have horses with
Starting point is 00:19:18 one, two, three, four, five words? Maybe. I'm locking it in. Locked in. Regrettfully. it in. What do you think, Warren? And what was the girl one? Spunky girl.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Spunky girl. I love that. Yes. Go the girlies. What did it? What was the first one again? Jemai Boy Horse. And the last one? She sells Seychelles getaways. I want it to be, I mean, oh God, they're all so good. I really wanted to be maybe she's barn with it, but again, I'm going against that because
Starting point is 00:19:52 that's what I want it to be. So I'm going to go with whatever the first one was. Jumee Boy Horse. All right, locked in. Here's her at the answers. She sells Seychelles getaways was the house. Pretty good. Lazy Susan was Lauren.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Jemay Boy Horse. Lauren went for that. That was Mar and May. Oh, well done. It's crazy. A great name for horse. Sorry, I thought there was also French in there, so I would probably say Jim Boy Horse.
Starting point is 00:20:21 I loved it. Oh, yeah. I think you made it better. I mean, I would say, I think I was. pronouncing it. I just didn't know how to pronounce it. Yeah, no, you nailed that. You sold it. But I think I might have said it like the, uh, what is that? Isn't Jim, like something like that? I like in French, fucker. Yeah, no. Oh, Jame. Oh, yeah. I like, isn't it? Oh, Jemme. Jemme. Jemme, boy horse. I like that is, well, worked either way. But I think I'm, I can't ever think of his name.
Starting point is 00:20:49 There was an Australian comedian who would dress, he did like, um, dressed as a school girl. Oh, yeah, Jemet. Yeah. Um, Chris Lilly. But I think I never got the joke. So that character's name is French for I like, is it? I think, isn't that what Jemais is in French, isn't it? I mean, Jodore is love. Isn't it? Jem?
Starting point is 00:21:08 Jem? Jem? I don't know. Well, this is going to be absolutely infuriating to our French listeners. Sorry if you speak French, so sorry. I'm just here to annoy them because there's a feud going on. Oh, yeah. Yeah, going back to the early 20th century, I think.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Your people's maybe had a bit of a lot of heads. We played a lot of soccer. That's all that happened. Now, Lloyd went for maybe she's barn with it. I'm afraid that was Emma, the question writer. Oh, it's great. Well done, Emma. Maron went for Spunky Girl.
Starting point is 00:21:38 That was Lloyd. So was it who farted? I'm afraid. Lloyd, you absolutely. It was who farted. You dogged us. Oh, I only just got that. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:21:50 I reckon Wayne Rune tried to steal the name of another horse. His flage rising horse names. Why? Why? They rejected it. That was what I thought you might have been going down that way. I'm like, oh, interesting. But no, it's so funny, you got rejected.
Starting point is 00:22:05 When big tits, me. But anyway, you did get a point there from Mar and Lloyd. Maron got a point from Lauren and the House also got a point. So there's a bit of movement there in the second round, the third round, sorry. I really thought Lazy Susan was good. I was like, that's very 80s, right? Yes. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Question four comes from Fraser Green from New Glasgow in Nova Scotia, Canada. I didn't know there was a new Glasgow, that's fun. The question is, a lake near Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada has an unusual name. What is it? Oh, God. Doing a few of these are just like names today. God. Well, it's in part of we've got a slightly tight window of how, so these are, it should be easier to write, hopefully.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Is it a river or a lake? A lake. A lake. Lake in Canada? In Canada. That's right. In Nova Scotia, which is Latin. for New Scotland.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Whoa. And he's from New Glasgow. It's so funny that people travelled around and went, hey, I'm going to make this new place. Yeah, it's going to be like the old place. Like the old place. All right, while you're writing your answers,
Starting point is 00:23:11 Britannica writes at first glance, hoof-hearted, seems like a charming and appropriate name for an equine friend. But if you say it five times fast, you'll realize it's a clever double entendron that made it past Jockey Club senses. So it sounds like I reckon he just tried to, and they were like, no, we're not falling for that again. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:31 You got us once. What is it? Fool me once. Shame on me. Shame on you. No, that's wrong. I don't know. Can't get anything like today.
Starting point is 00:23:40 George W. Bush did it best. Yeah. He got lost. I didn't he say. The known knowns and the known. But he tried to do this. When he goes, for me once, shame on me. No, fool me, yeah, fool me one, shame on me.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Fool me, can't get fooled again. Like halfway through, he's like, oh, fuck. I absolutely pushed that. I'm so sorry. You bushed it. I bushed it, baby. Hey, well, he's still writing your answers. Let's go for a quick break.
Starting point is 00:24:15 All right, we're back. The answer in for question number four. What is the unusual name of the lake near Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada? Lake Meth van. Nova Lakeas, Nessia. Dumb Lake. Not quite a lake.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Big ass lake. Or Lake pink ass. Oh my God. All right, Mara, we're back to you. Oh, my God. I don't know how do you sort through that. How come I choose? Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:47 I think I do need to do some sorting. The meth van is beautiful. Yes. I feel like that's happened. What was it? Nova Lakers Nessia. That's something. Sounds like nonsense.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Dumb Lake. Not falling for that. Not quite a lake. Big ass lake. Lake pink ass. Okay. And ass is spelled in both cases A-D-W-S. Yeah, yeah, because it's Canadian, right?
Starting point is 00:25:13 Canadian A. Canadian A. I'm going to go for, not quite a lake. And, wait, what? Big ass lake. Big ass lake. Big ass lake. And pink ass like.
Starting point is 00:25:23 A lake. Oh, okay, sorry. Pink ass sounds unhealthy. So I'm going to go for big ass. lake. Okay, looked in. I think there is a pink lakes are a thing. There's a pink lake.
Starting point is 00:25:34 I sort of went to a pink lake in South Australia somewhere a couple years ago. Beautiful. Yeah, but why? Why is it pink? Algae, I guess. I don't know. I'm not changing. There's a local, the Big M factories nearby.
Starting point is 00:25:50 There was a big strawberry milk lake. That makes a lot of us. Yeah, never recovered. Lauren, what do you reckon? They're all very good. They're all very good Not quite a lake is Fantastic
Starting point is 00:26:04 I like I also love the idea of a meth van God this is so hard I'm gonna I'm gonna go the pink ass Yeah I want it to be not quite a lake But that has
Starting point is 00:26:22 You know my strategy by now Yeah yeah I'm against it I mean it's been working right You're all two out of three You've got correct 75% happy with that?
Starting point is 00:26:33 All right, Lloyd. I feel like there was some kind of incident where like a meth van crashed into the lake or, you know, was exploded near the lake or something. And then the lake's been named after that, like colloquially by the locals. So I'm going to go meth van. Lake. Locked in. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Here's who are the answers. Dumb Lake. That was Fraser, the question writer. That's great. Nova Lakeis Nessia, that was a house. I googled what lake was in Latin and it's Lakers. I'm like everything they're calling new something from Scotland. That was my new Loch Ness.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Clever. Really clever. Thank you. I really need to explain it just to make those five minutes worthwhile. Not quite a lake. That was Maron. Oh, so close. So close.
Starting point is 00:27:28 It's like a puddle. It's like a puddle. It's just like. Some science, I imagine like scientists arguing about, like, it shouldn't really be a lake because it's not this. Yeah. Tom and go, okay. Dwarf Lake, like Pluto style, it's been downgraded. Lauren went for Lake Pinkass.
Starting point is 00:27:45 That was Lloyd. You got me. Love it. Now, Lloyd went for Lake Methven. That was Lauren. Yes. So a point swap there. I like that.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Well done. And that means Marin is correct. It's big ass lake. Big ass lake. Big ass lake. Big ass lake. So you each get a point there. Big ass lake.
Starting point is 00:28:05 That's great. An entirely pointless role. Well, the house didn't score. You all got one on the house. But otherwise, yeah, basically. Also, I have a new name to give to Maron in my phone. Big ass lake. All right.
Starting point is 00:28:21 The penultimate question comes from Kim Hill from Maroya in New South Wales. Hope I'm saying that right. And the question is, what is the headline in The Guardian on the 13th? of June 2014. Get a headline from June of 2014 in the Guardian newspaper. While you're writing our answers, here's some more info about that lake. Fraser writes little is known about the origins of the name, however, Canada is a country known for its enormous amount of lakes within it.
Starting point is 00:28:48 So perhaps they're just running out of ideas. Records show the name dates back to the 1860s during a gold rush at the time. Wow, big ass. That feels really modern to me. Modern language, big ass Big ass But isn't our Oh but maybe it's like a donkey
Starting point is 00:29:05 Or something Oh yeah true Maybe that's it was just named after a local big donkey That adds up perfectly Yeah That would make sense I've talked myself around Answers are in for question number five
Starting point is 00:29:17 What was the headline in the Guardian On the 13th of June 2014 Here are your options Short-sighted man beats eagle in Breathtaking Hour Long wrestle Option two Friday Friday Got to get down on Black Friday.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Option three, children break in a radio station. Put on the show, eat chicken nuggets, die hair. Option four, man are leaving Florida and drove, citing embarrassment at Florida man meme. Option five, disheveled driver done for DUI during dangerous desert damp word denies doing dastly deed. Or finally, mad cow disease leads to farmers regretfully burning huge piles of oxen bulls, And livestock. Huge piles. All right.
Starting point is 00:30:05 We're back to you, Lauren. Oh, God. So you got the short-sighted man beating an eagle. You got Black Friday, got to get down. I got children breaking into a radio station, dying their hair, eating nuggets. Yep. Got Florida men leaving droves. You got the one with all the D's.
Starting point is 00:30:20 And mad cow disease leading to huge piles. Huge piles of ox and bulls and livestock being burned. Well, I mean, Friday, got to get down on Friday. That's Rebecca Black, isn't it? Who sang that song. I think that's a, I think it's a catchy song. Yeah. I still think about it, you know, on Friday's often.
Starting point is 00:30:41 2014, 2013. I do. Did they have, did that make it? Was that big in, in, in, in Wales? I feel like what, wasn't she some kind of, like, not nap or, I don't know. No, I think she was a, she was a child of wealth. A viral sensation. And her parents paid for some sort of factory that gave you a film clip and a song and stuff and they make it with you.
Starting point is 00:31:06 I did not know that. And it sort of got viral for being kind of bad. But it was so catchy that it ended up being a hit. It was a huge hit. It was famously barred. Yeah. I think it was a funny. But then she like went on to like release some really good bangers.
Starting point is 00:31:22 What? I don't know this. Friday. Friday. You know that song? I'm going to play it for you at the end of this. And Black Friday is a big sale thing. Or, depending on where you are, a bushfire.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Or Friday the 13th. Oh, yeah. Black Friday. Or a Grinspoon song. In Wales used to be like the Friday before Christmas. Ah. Which was cold Black Friday because it was bladed by violence. Oh my.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Yikes. Yeah, so it doesn't tend to be a positive. Like it's, there's a lot of days named Black Friday. I don't think any of them are like, oh, what a great day. I went for Black Friday this year. What was the D's one? Dishevel driver done for DUI during dangerous desert downpour denies doing dastily deed. That is very good.
Starting point is 00:32:13 I also think the mad cow thing is good because I remember that being a big thing. But then like that could have been 30 years ago. I really don't, I really don't know. We're currently going through a new, is it Mad Bird or Bird Flu? Mad Bird Flu. Mad bird flu. Big-breasted mad bird flu. Yeah, that's real bread.
Starting point is 00:32:32 Oh, these mad, these big-breasted mad birds. Sorry, Lord, I didn't mean any fancy. You've got the culture. Oh, what the hell? Let's go the D's. I think it's wrong, but I love alliteration. Well, you're changing strategy now. Oh, I am too.
Starting point is 00:32:50 No, oh, I like the Rebecca Black one too, and I like the Mad Cow one. All of them are good. They're all good. I'm going to go the D's. Okay. Lloyd? I feel like it's the children breaking into the radio station. It feels like the kind of hijinks that they would get up to.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Yeah. Nuggets, hair dye. Nuggets and done. Kids just living free. Putting on a radio show. It's so funny to break in and do a radio show. And dye your hair. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:16 On air. That's crazy. We can't even see that. No. All right, Maron, what do you think? What was the Friday? What was it? How was it word?
Starting point is 00:33:24 Friday, Friday. Got to get down on Black Friday. Yeah, I think that was like the least creative one out of all of them, so probably a report I wrote that. I'm going to go with that. Oh, no, you also said 13th, right? So it could actually be. Yes, it was. Yes, that's right.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Okay, I'm going to, you don't look convinced, but I'm going to go. Well, I'm impartial. Yeah, yeah, yeah, poker face. Okay. Also, I just have a very, you know, deadpaned head. Deadpan head. All right. Here's the right the answers.
Starting point is 00:33:56 All these fantastic. Mad cow disease leads to farmers regretfully burning huge piles of ox and bulls and livestock. That was Lloyd. Well done. That could have been real. Huge piles. Regrettfully. They're getting on the front foot.
Starting point is 00:34:15 We're not enjoying this. Just so everyone knows. I take no pleasure in this. Short-sighted man beats Eagle and breathtaking our long. That was Maron. No one was pulled by that. I think that's worthy of news. The Florida Man meme one.
Starting point is 00:34:31 That was Kim, the question writer. Yeah, I don't think Florida men are worried about. I don't know what that meme is. Oh, they're just like, if you Google any date and Florida Man, there's just like the wildest news headlines. Oh, sure. Okay. Normally with alligators and different drug-addled crime attempts.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Disheveled driver dumps. D-E-U-I. That was the house, I'm afraid. Oh, well done. I ran out of the end. I'm like, I wanted a D-word for court. I'm like, what's a D-word for court? Discovered. Oh, discovered.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Needed you there. I mean, you still fooled me without it. That's true. That's true. Take that credit. Friday, Friday. Got to get down on Black Friday. Maron both gave a point and really a back-handed to Lauren. I take that very personally.
Starting point is 00:35:23 I didn't think that through. Oh, really? dull writing on this. I'm going for it. I'm going to take that because you don't know the song. No, I think it's actually, you know what is actually a compliment because you're really like, obviously, the writing usually is incredible, but you're doing a reporter writing. That's fine. Biggast Lake. I'll give you on that one. Playing the game. And that means Lloyd is correct. Is children breaking a radio station, put on show, eat chicken nuggets, dye hair.
Starting point is 00:35:53 What a day. What a great day. That's incredible. So good. I'm going to read the whole story while you're writing the final answers. But that does mean Lloyd gets a point, Lauren gets a point, and the house gets a point. So going into the final round, the scores are Lloyd and Marin on three, the house on four. But Lauren out in front on five points. But you three get triple points in this final round. So still truly anyone's game, apart from really the house, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Things would have to go pretty wrong for you three for the house to win. Final question comes from Devin Peterson from Los Angeles. It's La La Land itself. And it is appropriately a movie synopsis question. So it would be your longest answer, like a short paragraph, three, four sentences-ish. What is the synopsis of the film Rubin and Ed? What is the synopsis of the film Rubin and Ed? Oh, that's it?
Starting point is 00:36:43 Yeah. Ruben and Ed. For... While your answer being written here is that article is written by Helen Davidson. A group of children in remote Western Australia broke into the community radio station they had recently visited and amused themselves by cooking chicken nuggets, dyeing their hair and swearing over the airwaves until police were called. Angie Stahl, station manager at the community station told the ABC,
Starting point is 00:37:09 it seemed the children, age between 8 and 14, broke into a Fitzroy crossing home on the 14th of May, found her food and hair dye, and then accessed the studio attached to the house. The children had visited the station a few times before and had learned the basics of operating the equipment. they were able to turn on the microphones, turn on the panel and switch everything on in the right way, and decided to do a bit of a show themselves, Stahl said. The show consisted mostly of swearing, prompting a listener to call the police. The cops got a call from an outlaying station ringing up to say, I think you've got some kids on the radio.
Starting point is 00:37:42 They're busy swearing, you better go bust them. Police arrived to discover the six children, three of them still inside after complaints from members of the public, that they were listening to a local radio station and they could hear children, swearing over the radio, a spokesperson for the WA police told the Guardian. He just believed that the children gave an entry into the radio station,
Starting point is 00:38:01 which was unmanned at the time and accessed the radio equipment. Officers contacted the style, but no official complaint was lodged. Criminal charges might have had serious consequences for a couple of the kids, so we decided we could work it out amongst ourselves, and that worked out a lot better. Instead, the children made an agreement with the station, their parents and elders, and to perform sorry tasks.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Stahl said, although she was angry to begin with, she was seeing the funny side telling ABC that children might have a future in broadcasting. Great story and well handled by Stahl. All right, the final question. What is the synopsis of the film, Ruben and Ed? Ruben Randall is down on his luck and struggling to support his young son,
Starting point is 00:38:44 working as a janitor at the Circus Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas. Until one night when the infamous clown mascot of the casino, is brought to life through the magic of an ancient slot machine that Ruben has put his last dollar into. Option two, Ed Weinberg and Ruben Gonzalez get into an altercation at a New York deli and a cheeky wizard transforms Rubin into a sentient, wise-cracking a Rubin pastrami sandwich. A real pickle! Now it's up to Ed to track down the mischievous wizard and get Rubin turned back into a person before their all-important high school prom.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Option three. Unlikely travel companions, Ruben, a hapless weirdo, and Ed a chronically failed businessman with anger issues, embark on a journey to find the perfect resting place for the frozen remains of Ruben's dead cat, Simon. From cats eating whole watermelons to running over ex-wives, Ruben and Ed learned that the real treasure truly is the friends we make along the way. Option four.
Starting point is 00:39:48 Two gophers, Rubin and Ed, are tasked with saving their pristine hillside from the wily plans of the greedy Texas land developer J.T. McMoney. Our furry heroes will have to give it all they've got, and perhaps a little bit more, if they want to stop McMoney and his goons. Well, finally, they're not only best mates, they're not only bandmates, but best mates.
Starting point is 00:40:12 traveling the country with high hopes of breaking through with their heavy metal band Public Safety, never leaving each other's sides till the moment Edmik Tz Meg, a rising country music star, falls hopelessly in love and leaves Ruben behind, working in his dead end sandwich job. Ruben, hopelessly alone, start secretly following the new lovebirds around while learning how to play the banjo and planning his revenge. All right. These are all
Starting point is 00:40:43 I think this is some of the finest and consistently good quality pitches I've had on this show I'm just going to choose the gopher one because of J.T. McMany and his goons.
Starting point is 00:41:02 I'm willing it to be true. All right, locked in, McMoney. What was the first one again does? The first one was the down on his luck janitor where the casino mascot comes to life yeah I did I like we got a mascot coming to life
Starting point is 00:41:22 we got a deli sandwich um coming to life deli sandwich you go on the sandwich good that sounds no that just sounds like someone who's never met an actual person called Ruben because that's also a name
Starting point is 00:41:39 You guys. Now I'm going to go with the first one. Why not? Okay. Locked in. I also love the McMoney thing. That was great. And the gopher's great, great story.
Starting point is 00:41:52 I also really like the sandwich story. What were the other two? The other two was the metal band with the, yeah, the third wheel, who learns the banjo to play the event. Out of revenge, yep. And the other. The other one was the unlikely travel companions, the angry one and the weirdo. And they're on a journey to bury the cat's ashes.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Oh, God. Or the remains, not ashes. Sorry. Oh, the cat, Simon. Yeah, the cat Simon. Oh, let's go with the cat, whatever that one was. Go to the cat Simon. Yeah, I loved the sandwich one, but I also agree with Mara and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:42:33 that sounds like someone's never met someone named Ruben. They're all so good. All right, here's the right. The answer is. The one about the heavy metal band Public Safety. That was my own most. Oh, man, come on.
Starting point is 00:42:51 Germany is like, it's a mecca for heavy metal too. Doesn't that sound real to you? Public safety is a great favorite. I'd say that sounds like a real Hollywood attempted making up a fake metal band. Hire me, Hollywood. I can do it. Then the one about the,
Starting point is 00:43:09 the sandwich and the New York deli. That was Lloyd. Well done. Can I ask you if you've ever met a room? Never met a reuben I didn't eat. Maron went for the circus janitor. That was Lauren. Oh, well done.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Thank you. Lloyd went for the gophers and J.T. McMany. I'm afraid that was Devin, the question writer. Oh, well done, David. Good job, Devin. Money, I mean, money kind of gave you a way. But, you know, Devin lives in LA. That's right.
Starting point is 00:43:45 That's true. He's probably pitching that as we speak. 100%. You should, Devin, you should. Take my money. Wait, no, you don't pitch. Give me your money. Give me your money.
Starting point is 00:43:55 I was thinking of KFC. And that means Lauren is correct. It's the unlikely travel companions. Oh my God. Your new strategy really came through to you today. Wow, I'm actually shocked. That to be sounded like playing. trains and automobiles.
Starting point is 00:44:11 Yeah, yeah, did a bit, yes. Only one of them is played by Crispin Glover. Oh, I love that guy. There you go. Is he Simon the cat? I think he's one of the humans. Oh, that sounds said. Simon the cat.
Starting point is 00:44:25 That sounds made up. That sounds like that comic, no? You know, to be totally fair, I kind of lost track of what all of the different storylines were and I just remember, I was like, oh, I like cats are fun. Yeah, yeah. Let's go with the cat. There's a rumor that, have you ever seen that footage of him on an old, David Letterman show where he's got long hair and he sort of kicks his foot at
Starting point is 00:44:43 Lederman, he's been real weird. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Apparently, there is a theory that he was in character as Ruben or whoever he plays in this movie because he has out, that's how he looks. It was before it came out, but maybe while it was being through it. I only know him from Charlie's Angels where he smells Lucy Lou's hair all the time. Oh, yeah. That's my Crispin Glover.
Starting point is 00:45:02 Yeah, he plays a good, like, psycho. But then in back to the future, he plays such a great sort of sweet fella. He does. Scott, I'm going to have to look at his back catalogue tonight. You're my density. Beautiful. So, yeah, there's not enough critical reviews of it to even have a Rotten Tomato score, but the audience seemed to really like it.
Starting point is 00:45:23 A cult hit. It's got 87% approval rating from the audience. A couple of reviews to give you an idea from Letterbox. Krelbourne says it's evil little Miss Sunshine. And Nick Naney writes, it's before sunrise for Q. were non-followers. When was it released? It was released back in 94, I think.
Starting point is 00:45:48 Wow. All right, well, that brings to the end. Before I give you the final scores, Marron, where can people find you? Instagram, please. Maron May official, I'm doing Instagram now. No, I've always been doing that. I don't know what else to say. You've rarely done a big push on Instagram.
Starting point is 00:46:05 Are you got any pods coming out? Oh, no, I know. worry about that. I'm focusing purely on Instagram. Instagram. Yeah, yeah. That's the future. That is the future, as they say.
Starting point is 00:46:20 And Lauren, your show at Melbourne Fringe is opening soon. Yes, in about a month. Well, at a time of release, it's in about a week or two. Oh, shit. Okay, definitely. Come along. It's, if you've ever been sucked into a pyramid scheme or an MLM, you'll love this show. And then come and follow me on Instagram at Live Laugh, Lauren.
Starting point is 00:46:38 underscore I am also writing a show about the Bermuda Triangle Dark Ride at SeaWorld on the Gold Coast. So if that's your jam, find me online. That's exciting. Love it. And Lloyd, you're about to be in London. Yeah, I'm just doing a couple of gigs in London, yeah, October the 2nd and October 4th.
Starting point is 00:46:58 With Anne Edmonds. What a powerful couple. Or current. Well, current. Current. At time of recording. TBC. And then I think I saw you got shows back in Australia soon after.
Starting point is 00:47:08 So you must be just said briefly. I'm doing yeah, comedy in the vines, I think. I'm doing the wogga, wogga, comedy gala. Just like a few. I've got a few things. I've got to write a new show, basically. You sound so jacked about it. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:24 So final score check in equal third place on three points apiece. It's Lloyd Langford and Marron May. Yeah. Three, yay. Three is good. Alliteration. in second place on five points at the house, but way out in front with a huge final round
Starting point is 00:47:44 on 11 points is Lauren Edwards. Yes. The new strategy works. This is the best day of my life. Thanks so much for joining us. Really appreciate it. And cheers for the listeners who tuned in, which I guess is everyone hearing this right now.
Starting point is 00:48:01 Give us a foster review if you want to and tell your friends if you think you know anyone who might enjoy this kind of thing. Anyway, this has been Who Knewit with Matt Stewart. Now that you know it, I've been Matt Stewart. Good boy. Is there a traditional German-Welch rivalry? Would you play each other on football or anything?
Starting point is 00:48:31 I didn't. That's a question for you, definitely. I think traditionally during the early parts of the 20th century. You call that a rivalry of sorts? There are a couple of big rivalries. No, no, we just played a lot of soccer back then. That's all that happened. There were two periods where I would describe us as at loggerheads.
Starting point is 00:48:52 I don't think, I think that the Welsh have a real problem with the English. Yes. But we, I don't. Because then they came and took your land, took your jobs. Yeah. And we live next door to them still through no fault of our own. Can't you just move? I did.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Yeah, he did. Same. But no, I like Germany. I like Wales. I'm sure both of them are lovely. Australia, on the other hand. What a hole. Tell who he has a child.
Starting point is 00:49:36 Tell me more. I have gone through a Dr. Seuss period with my daughter. And then just Googling to find more of the book. and which ones are good and whatever and you open up a whole can of worms there. I have no idea. I mean, you know, I think all children's authors are probably somewhat problematic. Roll-Dowl. Yes, I heard that.
Starting point is 00:50:04 J-K. Roling. Yeah, what? There is something. Peter Hellier. Frankie the fish. I had a bunch of comedians, children's children are I just thinking of them too. David Walliams.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Oh, no, no, that's a real one. Yeah. Look, the Peter Helly one was, I was being ironic. No. It's very unproblematic. The volumes when I was being deadly snow. Yes, that's true. That's the only one that made me go.
Starting point is 00:50:26 I probably should make a point here. Pete's the old one out. Don't worry, Pete. As far as we know at this time of recording. Yeah, it is true though. I know the, yeah, Ian Blotten, I think, has had some issues. Oh, you know a lot. Who's the person who wrote the day my bum went psycho?
Starting point is 00:50:47 That's a red flag. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's true. That's an Aussie one, I think. Is it John Marsden? I don't know. I have no idea. Yeah, but anyway. I don't think he's probably.
Starting point is 00:50:56 There's a question mark over him until proven innocent. All right, question, that's the children's author hypothesis. Dodging until proven otherwise. I mean, anytime I catch a moth now, I'm the moth catcher in our family. Everyone else is scared of them except for me. So next time I catch one, I'm going to be like, is this a letter shark? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:19 I must know. Is there like a Shazam for moths that you can? Oh. The sound of the flamp. Make them sing. That is a letter shark. But it's a really dark-colored app because otherwise they get too confused. And they think it's the moon.
Starting point is 00:51:34 They think it's the moon. What is the lady Susan's that thing that spins around? Yeah. Yeah. I always get them in Bain-Marie is confused. I think a Bain-Marie is in, is an enclosed. I don't know if it rotates. No, I don't think it does.
Starting point is 00:51:51 I don't know. I have to ask my mum. Isn't a Bean Marie like a big hot tub of water? I have never had that before. I thought the Bain Marie was like the thing, the glass case that keeps it warm that you get your pastries and selected treaties from. Whereas the lazy Susan is the thing on the table that turns. Right. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:52:11 That's not funny. I think it really shows how wealthy you grew up. if you have even heard of these terms. And I was pretty well off. Both my parents were teachers. We are from the other side of the tracks. Yeah, that's right. And I'm confident I'm not even saying Bain Marie correct.
Starting point is 00:52:29 I have no confidence in it all. That pronunciation is from Kath and Kim, so it's probably wrong. We could just do an hard know if you want. Well, yeah. Do you have anything you want to plug? Yeah. Have a go. Why not try?
Starting point is 00:52:45 Eggs. Tell me more. Any particular... Get an egg in you. Real good for you. Don't eat the shell. Straight from the cloaca to you. Our eggs come cloaca fresh.
Starting point is 00:53:07 If they're green, don't eat them. That's right. Good advice. It's absolutely good advice. It's so true. Someone's so fun to me about just sitting in a room with comedians laughing at their own ideas. That's great. Usually it's laughing going, this is stupid, but that's what this is all about.
Starting point is 00:53:37 That is fun. Can't wait to hear it. It's just like, I don't know, you just. Got to get yourself in the mind of 2014. That's right. I'm just trying to think where I was when I was writing that. You know, you get to a certain age where, like, dates and timelines, you just don't know them anymore.
Starting point is 00:53:57 I found it wild at my parents, you know, talking about old stories, like, oh, and like when I was 18 or something, I'm like, I could tell you the month of everything that's happened. You know, I know exactly. And then it just like, 20s into 30s, it just gets very blurry. Very nebulous. Do you know the story about Crispin Glover and Back to the Future? part two.
Starting point is 00:54:19 Yes. That's pretty good. Tell us. So he, they offered him like a very, very small amount of money for the sequel and he said no. And then they hired someone else and basically got a mask. Yes,
Starting point is 00:54:35 I do know this and made them look like him. Because they still, they had his face mask from, because they had to age him up in the first movie. So they still had his face mask. So the guy, and they hung him upside down. And if you just said so,
Starting point is 00:54:47 you couldn't really tell. But they bullied the character because they didn't like Crispin Glover. Yeah, the rest of the cast apparently were not very nice to that guy. Never called him, never spoke to him and used his name and stuff. Wow. Because they saw him as a scab, basically. Yeah, that is scabby. And laws got put in because of it to protect people.
Starting point is 00:55:09 They can't do that anymore. Yes. And probably, I think they maybe had to pay him out and stuff. Yeah, that's hectic. Crispin Glover had no idea he was at the front line. He was like, good for him. For anyone like Maron who doesn't know the lyrics, just while they're still writing their answers, I can tell you the lyrics are, ooh, ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:30 7am, waking up in the morning. Gotta be fresh, got to go downstairs, got to have my bowl, got to have cereal, serial, seeing everything, this time is going, ticking on and on, everyone's rushing, got to get down to the bus stop, got to come. catch my bus. I see my friends. Kicking in the front seat. Sitting in the back seat.
Starting point is 00:55:54 Got to make my mind up. Which seat can I take? It's Friday. Friday. Got to get down on Friday. Everybody's looking forward to the weekend. Weekend. Friday.
Starting point is 00:56:04 Got to get down on Friday. Everybody's looking forward to the weekend. Partying, partying, partying, yeah. Partying, partying, yeah. Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. Looking forward to the weekend. It's fantastic. I love that, yeah, the songwriter just absolutely phoned it in, not think it would ever go anywhere.
Starting point is 00:56:27 Really feels like an AI era, lyrical job, but no. I feel like she had the same parameters as Dr. Seuss. Yeah, again, proving the theorem correct. She does have some other good bangers, though, I will say. Does she? Yeah, she does have a great little. cute song called I think it's called I Really Like You or something like that. It's adorable. I really like it. It's a bop. I think she really came into herself as an artist.
Starting point is 00:56:57 Yeah. Well, I know what I'll be listening to tonight. Oh no, mate. Actually, no, that's the wrong singer. Forget I said that. See, this is what I mean.
