Y'all have heard me talk about Hungry Root for a long time now, and the reason I keep coming back is simple.
Eating everybody shouldn't take up every minute of your brain power.
Hunger Root combines meal ideas with grocery delivery, so you get everything you need for your family's meals,
plus all the extras like snacks, smoothies, and treats too.
Over time, it actually learns what you like and what your family will actually eat and then what fits your dietary needs.
So every delivery feels more personal than the last.
There are more than 50,000 recipes and over 1,000 grocery items to choose from.
And a lot of the meals are ready in just 15 minutes, which is perfect for us.
Plus, they screen out more than 200 additives, including high fructose corn syrup,
artificial sweeteners, and preservatives, which means I can truly feel great about giving my family anything from hungry root.
It really is amazing, y'all.
For me, I always like to make sure that the ingredients are good than I'm feeding the kids,
but it takes forever to look through all that at the grocery store.
And so I'm so thankful that knowing hunger has already done that for me.
I can just shop with ease.
You're going to love hunger as much as we do.

Some summer days, I realize I have had plenty of coffee and barely under your water,
which is definitely not the combination I need when I'm trying to keep up with three little girls.
I've learned that when I'm intentional about hydration from the beginning of the day,
I feel so much better.
and Element makes that really easy.
It is a zero-sugar electrolyte drink mix that gives your body real hydration and support
without the sugar, food dyes, or other sketchy ingredients found in a lot of sports drinks.
Christian and I both love having the sparkling cans around.
They are cold, crisp, and so easy to grab when you're heading out the door.
Plus, they come in great flavors.
Christian's favorite is the 16-ounce black cherry lime salt,
and I'm loving the smaller one of the lemonade salt right now.
If sparkling drinks aren't your thing, Element also comes in convenient stick packs,
so easy to add to your water bottle or tumbler. They also have a new lemonade iced tea that has
caffeine, which is really nice if you, you know, want to skip the coffee. They also have pink
lemonade as well. We love so many of the flavors. I love the watermelon, the raspberry. They
have great options, but if you don't know which one you would like, you can get a free eight-count
sample pack of elements most popular drink mix flavors with any purchase at drink element.com
slash woe. You can find your favorite element
flavor or share it with a friend. That's drink

What's up everybody? Happy Woe, that's good Wednesday.
I hope you're having a great week, but per usual,
it is about to get so much better.
I am loving all of these compilations of the best advice.
We've gotten so much good advice over the years.
We have to rewind. We have to go back to some things
and remind ourselves of what's been spoken.
In today's episode, we had the best of Robert
advice. You guys have said it. Y'all love when my family comes on the show. I love when my family
comes on the show. And they always give such great wisdom. I'm so grateful to have so many people
around me that I want to model my life after. Uncle Sy, do I want to model my life after? I'll take
his advice. I don't know about everything. You know, some things might do a little different. But we do
have some good advice for him. And my sister, so many great people in this episode. So tune in,
get your notebook out, and write down some good advice.
You ask you the question and ask everybody who comes on the podcast.
Are you ready for this?
You probably don't know this because you've never listened to my podcast, have you?
No, I haven't.
So with that being said, I probably know I'm not ready.
All right, get ready.
It is, what is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
You can think about it.
That would be because when I was out when the show was going on full blast.
I got asked that every time before we left.
and I would always tell them, you know,
learn to laugh at yourself, okay?
Don't take everything so serious.
Life is too short, okay, and we live in a mean and cruel world.
Yep, that's good.
I'm actually really shocked.
You were prepared for that.
Well, I actually wanted to ask you about that anyways
because everybody thinks that you're hilarious,
because you are hilarious.
But the main question I get asked, especially in the height of the show, is the question,
is Uncle Si really that crazy?
To which I always say, yes, you're crazier in person, because the show only shows 22 minutes,
but you're like this 24-7.
So how do you learn to laugh at yourself?
Were you in Poifville always as crazy as you are now?
Well, like I said, okay, I had four brothers and two sisters.
okay and growing up
to say I had a identity crisis
is an understatement
because every
in school and everything I did
okay the reply was always
well Jimmy Frank wouldn't have done it that way
or Judy wouldn't have done it that way
you know and I was going
hey
I'm not Jimmy Frank I'm not Judy
yeah
so you know
But everybody takes everything too serious.
That's true.
Look, worry and like if you take everything too serious, that's worry.
Yeah.
Like he's a businessman.
He worries too much.
Okay.
But on his good side, okay, he's the biggest prankster in the Robinson family.
It's true.
No, oh, for sure.
Hey, first off, I don't worry.
The only thing that worried me about business was you were part of my business, which kind of worried me.
That's worry.
Right.
Having to depend on you, it was a little worry.
Hey, I've always been dependable.
That's why I feel when all other people down there at Duck Commander Home was that feels how I'd be over there sleeping after we had a big meal from Ms. Kay.
And everybody else would go to work.
And he would just say, hey, leave him along.
Do you need some reads?
And they'd say no.
And I said, hey, he's doing his job, leave me alone.
I was actually just telling Christian,
we were talking about memories that I have with you,
and I was talking about how, before this show even,
I remember we'd be down there at Mama K and Popovills
when Duck Commander was down there,
and every single afternoon, after lunch,
you really would take a nap.
And what you don't know, though,
is V, Reed, Colin, Jellant would hide behind Milo K's kitchen table
and wait for you to wake up
because 99% of the time you had gas when you woke up.
We would wait for you to park.
But that's true story.
That's a true story.
Sadie, were you going to ask me my advice again?
Or was that just for Sy?
That was just for Sy, but do you want to share?
Well, yeah, I'm going to give you another piece of advice that was given to me.
So when I take over Duck Commander, so I'm the new boss and I'm looking at payroll.
and I'm you know we got a cut like like we're not making enough money and so I looked down there and
sigh's on the payroll well I I was trying to figure out who do we keep who keeps going so I've got
a sigh who basically sleeps on the couch for four hours every day at work which is we're
working in the house right and I thought look well you know I hate to be the CEO side of it yeah I got to
I got to trim the fat or lack thereof.
And so I go to Phil and I say, Phil, we need to let SIE go.
Like, I mean, I just, the work, the productivity is not there.
And Phil gives me this advice.
He said, leave Sigh alone.
He makes the reeds when he's awake.
And nobody else wants to make the read.
So just leave him alone.
He'll be fine.
I'm like, oh, man, okay, we'll keep Sye.
But then as it turns out, when the show.
show happens when Doug Dicey
Si's still there
everybody gets to meet Sye
had I done what I was
going to do Sye you would have been
you wouldn't even been a Duck Commander
It's true and so one of the best
piece of advice I got was to leave Sye
You never know that
that jewel
that's right there you may
overlook it and we had no idea
Sire you were a diamond
in the real rough like really
rough now that is crazy to think about
And that is good advice.
So on that note, did you ever, ever, ever think in your life that you would be as famous as you became?
No.
No.
I mean, and for you, I mean, obviously you could say it to yourself too, but would you have ever thought that Uncle Si would be as famous?
Not, that wouldn't even enter his mind.
Okay.
So here's how the story goes.
So I end up keeping Saw on.
And it wasn't because it wasn't anything personal,
Saiz just we didn't have any money.
And so then I start making a TV show,
like we're still doing the video.
So I'm having a video.
But I thought we can't video,
Sae.
Like he's too awkward.
Nobody's going to get it.
And so I was filming around him.
So we'd be in the duck blind
and I would just film around side.
Oh, no, no.
I was always camera shot because when you pointed my face.
Well, you wouldn't say anything.
Well, no, no.
That's what I'm saying.
Right.
He was like, you like the turtle, I mean, the frog on Tom and Jerry.
You know, every time the spotlight hits him, he just would crook.
Why were you so nervous?
It was, say, you didn't understand.
Okay.
Nobody had brought out the green stuff yet.
Oh, my God.
I was paying you green stuff to sleep.
Yeah, but you would pay me peanuts, son.
Hey, nobody was paying me what I was worth.
Okay.
Now I'm starting to see the McDonald's thing coming up.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
I would pay you what you were wearing.
That's right. That's why I didn't flip hamburgers.
I mean, I was trying to get you to audition.
You wouldn't say anything.
And so it wasn't until I put a hidden camera on the table and I covered it up.
And we were watching the footage.
And you just come to life.
I'm like, that's the guy.
And I had a hidden camera and we ran it.
We showed the footage of you.
I know.
Say you killed everything.
I didn't even know it.
I wouldn't have done that.
I know.
That's crazy.
And that's how really the first time I saw.
that and then when they actually came to
do Doug Dynasty, Sal wasn't even on the list.
Wow. It just had the couples
and then I called them back.
I said, hey, y'all need
to check out Uncle Si and they go
well, here's what they said, Zai. We may
use them from time to time on the show
and then they met you.
And then they didn't have enough room
and then they started
paying you, I guess what you're more
worth. What you're accustomed to.
That's what I was worth. Okay.
So how? Okay. All these
the green stuff, you know, helped you.
But how did you go from being so nervous
that you wouldn't do anything on camera?
And obviously, even in your childhood,
feeling like you're the one that nobody understands
to literally singing three songs on a platinum selling album.
You are the main character of Duck Dynasty.
You speak everywhere.
Like, where did the confidence all of a sudden come from?
I've always had it.
You just heard.
No, no, you got to understand.
Okay.
The Robertson family,
most of them
Phil's not really
Phil likes the limelight
okay
the rest of us are pretty good storytellers
but I'm the best of them
the storyteller
because the stories are not always true
because you make them up
no it ain't like that
hey I don't tell you I wrote a book
it's 95% true 5%
just to give a little punch
at least you admit it
but you ask a good question
Because I got one for you and him.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Did you ever dream that you would be what you are?
Never.
Never.
I mean, dancing with the stars.
Dancing with the stars?
No.
Because I wasn't even on the list at the beginning either.
It was John Luke and Cole were the two kids.
Yeah.
And then somehow I made it on, I think because of the prom dress video,
the prom dress episode that y'all were both in.
And then that really hit.
I don't remember it.
You don't remember the prom dress?
You were a prom dress shop at me?
That's when you were dancing with the mannequin up at the dress car.
Yeah.
Now that you spark my memory.
That was a funny one.
That was really my first kind of episode.
And then when we went driving and that was my first time to ever drive and I drove
with you and I was terrible.
Remember that?
That was the first day back from shooting.
Remember that was the first episode.
And it was like 105 degrees.
Yes.
It was so hard.
Camera guys are passing out.
And I literally had no idea what I was doing.
And I actually kept hitting the little duck decoys.
Yeah.
And I was like, I cannot, I really don't know how to drive.
Somebody actually has to teach me.
So that was really what did it.
But then Dancing with the Stars happened because they asked you to be on and you said no.
And mom was like, Sadie can do it.
I wasn't.
So they asked me to do it.
And then they said you get paid.
So I looked down how much you got paid.
And I'm like, well, hey.
But I never watched the show.
Then I watched like five minutes of the show.
And I was like, heck no, I'm not doing that at all.
So I passed.
And then I think that was the way.
it was meant to be for you to come on.
It's crazy.
Would you ever do dance services?
Number one, no, they asked me.
No, they asked me and I said, no.
I said, hey, I done watched.
That's for young people.
All the guys in our family have been spending so much time outside this summer,
whether they're fishing, working hard in the yard, or just hanging out,
and you already know they are rocking their poncho outdoor shirts through it all.
My dad wears one pretty much every day and Christian loves his.
we are a poncho kind of family.
Poncho makes men's performance shirts
that are lightweight, breathable, quick drying,
and built with UPF 50 plus sun protection.
They work great for long days outside,
and they still look sharp enough to wear to dinner, church, or pretty much anywhere.
Poncho also makes it so easy to find their right fit.
They offer regular, slim, and tall options
in a wide range of sizes and styles,
so no matter what you're buying or who you're buying for,
you're not stuck hoping one standard fit works for everybody.
And the details are so small.
mart they have a hidden zipper pocket a sunglasses holder and even a built-in lens cloth it's one of those
shirts that works for fishing traveling yard work and all the things and still looks great i find it most
impressed though that poncho has something for everybody because if my dad and christian love the same place
that says a lot okay they have different styles and they both look great in poncho shirts so shout out to
poncho outdoors.com that really fits all go to poncho outdoors.com slash won't enter your email to get $10 off and free shipping on your
order. That's poncho P-O-N-C-H-O outdoors.com slash woe. Head there, drop in your email and get
$10 off and free shipping. And once you try one, you will get why all the guys in our family
have to have a closet full of poncho. Okay, so I want to ask you a question and we need your
advice, me and Christian. So, you know, when the show started, to everyone's surprise,
pretty much every girl in America had a crush on Uncle Sy, which I don't know how that happened,
happen but people don't know you've been married for so long like how long have you been married
April the 7th will be 50 years oh my gosh 50 years 50 years 50 years that mean redhead
I'm married she needs to write a book called 50 years oh yeah yeah no no that's
put you in the loony bin nothing no no because everybody asked her you know well why ain't you on the
show and asked me they said why ain't your wife on the show I said because number one she's
a lot smarter all of us okay
She don't want no part of it.
But the real reason is she says, hey, I have to live with him.
Hey, that's true.
So I don't need to be on the show.
She needed a break.
So what's your marriage advice for me and Christian, 50 years down the road?
Never go to bed after an argument.
I love that.
That's good.
No, no, I'm serious.
Don't go to bed if you arguing, you know, you just have to come together and say, hey, look,
we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this.
Yeah.
You got to watch that, though.
One time I stayed up for two and a half weeks.
No, no.
Well, in that case, I put that to him here,
Corey's hard-headed as you are.
That's true.
Nobody wants to kill here.
That's true.
No, most of it is that, and then you've got to communicate.
Yeah.
It's good.
You can't just quit and say, okay, oh, you made me mad.
Well, sure you're going to make you mad.
You're two individuals for crying out loud.
Yep.
Yeah.
That's good.
We'll take it.
Yeah.
And the laughter part comes into play in the marriage.
That's good.
Okay.
Don't take yourself too serious.
It's always easier to laugh at stuff you do, especially once you get like me and Christine, old age is hilarious.
No, no, I'm serious.
We do stuff now and then just bust out like.
And if nothing said, we just, we do something and we both bust out laughing.
That's hilarious.
Because, you know, it's just, because we know each other so well.
That's awesome.
It's ridiculous.
That's awesome.
That's awesome.
That's really good advice.
Don't you put him on a pedestal because he's going to fail you.
And don't you put her on a pedestal because she's going to fail you.
Yeah.
You're human beings.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And that's what people do, you know.
That's why, that's the way.
that's the wildest part of this,
and I've got the greatest answer in the world
of why I am who I am
is because of the Almighty.
That's good.
Preach.
In this world, okay.
Anytime you see anything happen
or you have an argument or something,
you might want to go into the bathroom
or somewhere where a mirror is
and turn around and say,
okay, what is your part in this?
Did you have any part?
part in this doing, making it what was happening happening.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because, hey, whatever he did, can you change?
Can you change him?
No.
Where he wouldn't do it?
Nope.
Nope.
The only person you can make the difference in is, hey, what can I do for you today?
That's good.
Oh, here's what I'm going to do for me today.
I'm going to try to do everything I do.
I'm going to be good and it's going to be right.
it's going to be the right thing to do at the right time.
That's good.
I'm going to be good and it's going to be right.
So when you came back into her life, or I guess back home, were you thinking about her?
Like, how did y'all get reconnected?
Yeah, so I was in New Orleans.
And while her life was spinning out of control here in our community, I was spending
out of control down there.
And I had a massive altercation.
I was seeing a woman who was married and she was lying about that.
I was not about how old I was. Everybody thought it was 21 because that's what I told him. But I was actually only 18. And so it just, everything was built on lies. And finally one day her husband tried to separate my head from the rest of my body. And out of that, out of my survival of this major altercation, I thought, I just sat there. I was in New Orleans. I was actually in Kenner, which is outside. And I just sat there on that curve and thought, you know, if I stay here, I'm going to die. Because it's just, you're just, you. You're just, you.
You know, it provided me a moment.
And it's just, you know, like a lot of things that, where you have an experience where you almost die, you do some soul searching.
And that's what I did that day.
And a police officer sat down next to me and was so kind.
Everybody else was not kind, but he was.
And help me through that moment.
And he guided me back to here and just made such a difference in my life.
I can't wait to meet him in heaven and tell him how.
That's cool.
And say, you know, that word you gave me that you made the most of every opportunity.
This is what says in the scripture because that day you had an 18-year-old that was seeking and you provided a pathway.
That's cool.
So you never know.
And anyway, when I got back home, I decided I went, so mom and dad just totally embraced me.
You know, I had a speech prepared just like the Luke 15 kid, you know, the prodigal.
And I never even got to give it.
You know, they were just like, welcome.
Dad's line was, hey, we got duck calls to build.
Wow.
And so I always say that that night we killed the fat and catfish.
had a celebration because, you know, a lost son had come home.
And so it was really great.
And so I was just like in this honeymoon Christ period where it was just me and the Lord.
And I was going to school at ULM and I was working for dad.
And I decided I was just not going to date because like me and women did not, I mean, like,
it was me.
I was the problem.
But I just thought, you know, Lord, you were single.
Paul was single.
You know, I'm just going to go that route.
That lasted about a month.
And I realized I didn't have that gift.
And so, but I thought about Lisa because I always knew, even though I treated her so badly, she really loved me.
She cared about me.
I never forgot that.
And girlfriends in between and whatever her life had become, I knew that she was crazy about me.
And so I thought, well, if I can get her to Christ like I've been brought to Christ, then this is a woman I can build a life with.
And so I called her up and literally out of nowhere.
I mean, we had not talked in two years.
And so I called her up and, you know, I said, hey, I'm back, you know.
And she said, oh, I knew.
I heard, you know, because we're all in small town.
Yeah.
And I said, well, I heard you're dating some guy, you know.
And she said, yeah, it's serious.
I mean, we're talking about getting married.
She's still in high school.
Well.
We're talking about getting married when I got eyes.
I was a senior, yeah.
Were you being serious or did you just want him to know?
Yeah.
No, I was serious.
Yeah.
And she was trying to like.
I was trying to make him jealous too.
Yeah.
And I said, yeah, really?
And I was like, well, you want to go out Friday?
And I said, absolutely.
I mean, hot mic, drop the mic.
That was it.
And so I went and picked her up.
Her parents hated me because I treated her so bad.
And I get it.
So I was humble and, you know, apologetic about my former life because now I was a son of God.
Wow.
And so that first night we talked about.
about our lives. And I told her about what had happened to me and how I had changed and that I was
really looking for somebody that I could see. But no sex, no drinking, no drugging. I was through
with all that. And of course, she was thrilled because it was like finally, you know. Yeah.
And so we were going to, we started, you know, it didn't take long. We started talking about
getting married. That's awesome. We were going to get married in a year. And then our biology began
to overtake our theology.
That's a good word.
And so we kept, you know, shortening down and finally one Friday night in November,
I said, let's do it next Friday.
And she looked kind of funny at me.
And she said, do what?
I said, let's get married.
Wow.
And she was like, next week?
And I said, because this is like a Friday night.
I said, yeah, we don't need to do a big wedding and all that stuff.
You know, we hate all that.
And she's like, we.
I was like, you got a rat in your pocket, buddy.
So she's like, well, yeah, okay, yeah.
You know, I'm in, you know.
And so I remember me and mom went down like the next day or that Monday
and went to one of the jewelry stores at the mall and found this like the cheapest I could, you know,
possibly afford.
And I had to finance.
It was like $200 probably for the whole setup and for a wedding ring and engagement ring.
And of course, her mom and dad were to live it again, you know, because it's like,
What in the world?
You know, what are y'all doing?
You're crazy.
And again, I understand it.
But we did it.
And they weren't going to come originally.
And then they did.
They had said, we don't agree with this.
And no, we're not going to come to the wedding.
And so Lisa wound up coming out.
We lived out on the river.
And I lived out there as well.
And so she wound up spending most of that week before we got married living out there with my grandparents.
At Granny and Paul.
Really?
Right next door.
Wow.
And so she was just part of the.
little, little family. And of course, they had taken her car back because it was their car that bought her.
And so she's driving around this big old, huge white Ford LTD we had back in those days.
And she had a little job doing something. And so she went in. And so she ran out of gas in it.
And so Paul, my grandpa, he filled it up with gas or put five gallons in. Well, unfortunately, it was kerosene that he put into the car.
And so this was the day before the wedding. So when we're supposed to go and,
now her parents, the last day, said they were coming.
Her mom bought her address.
And so now, we're going to the wedding.
And so we all go to load into that big car that we all would ride to church together.
And your dad was there, Jason was there.
We're all piled into the car.
And we get about two miles up the road and it completely done because of the carousine.
Oh, my gosh.
So we're just sitting there.
Y'all's alive.
The whole thing needs to be a movie.
It could be enough.
Every one of y'all's stories need to be a movie.
The blind to the start.
Here comes Paul who did it.
He was in his car.
He had a Ford Fiesta that literally would fit right in between us sitting right here.
Oh, my gosh.
It was literally a 10 can.
It would hold four people.
And because gas was so high.
Gas was so high back then.
So he stops by.
We all pile in there.
We have eight people in a car that holds four people.
And we go to my wedding.
Oh, my God.
So our parents are looking and thinking, this is never going to work.
This is never going to work.
Which is funny because every one of us were rejected by our in-laws.
I was going to say this sounds very similar to a mom and dad story.
Their story, Jay's got the same thing.
I don't know about Jeb.
He probably got accepted.
But the rest of us were rejected.

living together? Or yeah, he lived with y'all. Yeah. So Dad was living with y'all when he asked
mom's parents, two mama and two papa to marry mom and they said no. And didn't two
Papa come to y'all's house? So they were both there. So look, I pull up. At least it said,
oh yeah. I pull up and get out of my truck and I start walking by. And I thought Willie had left
the TV on like really loud in his room. Because it was right next to where we parked the cars.
And so I walk over and open the door to go in to turn his TV off. And he is going at it with two mom and
two moms.
I mean, the three of them are, and your mom is on the phone.
Oh, my gosh.
She was in, at Hardy.
That is hilarious.
And I was like, I opened the door.
And, of course, somebody looks at me and I was like, oh, sorry.
And he shut the door.
And I went and told Lisa, I said, we got World War III going on in Willys Roo.
And, you know, yeah, because they were, you know, they were trying to figure out how to go forward with their relationship.
You know what's so cool.
And it's like, our family stories are so crazy.
Like, I love y'all's story, hearing how it started.
but then coming to Christ.
And all is really around like true radical transformation in Christ.
And I had a person come up to me after seeing the blind.
And I thought this was so interesting.
It's kind of one of those moments where someone is saying something nice to you,
but it comes with something that was kind of rude to at the same time.
But you're like, thank you for that.
So she comes up and she's like, I have to say like, before I saw the blind,
I just didn't really understand you, you know.
I didn't really, I wasn't a fan because I just thought, well, yeah, she's had everything, you know, handed to her in her life and look at, you know, of course she loves God because her family's perfect. And this is just what she told herself. And she's a mom. Like, and honestly, if I saw her out in Polly, I would never think that, like, I would never think she would have thought that of me, you know. And so she's just sharing vulnerably how she felt about me from afar. And she said, but then I saw the blind. And she started crying. She said, I had to tell you, I
I'm sorry I projected that on you and your family, but it's just very rare where you see someone like Duck Dynasty in like a TV show and it seems to be all this thing.
And it just seems like your family loves God, loves each other and no problems.
But like to show the worst part of like your family's story.
And that's not even all of it.
That's pebble of fill.
You know, like you hear y'all's story.
You hear my parent story.
You could go through every single person.
And I could too, you know?
I mean, talk about my high school, and it was different than everybody else's, but there was its own sin problems and craziness.
And I think everyone's life is truly marked by radical transformation that we all had through the gospel and through Jesus.
You're trying to impress upon people. That's why I love that you have us on your podcast.
You're trying to impress upon them. You don't have to make the same mistakes that other people make to learn from that.
Because what we would much rather is that people make better decisions.
and don't have to go through that and say, you know, I don't have to carry that pain.
And the other thing is you want to offer hope to people who are in bad situations.
You just described that situation about our family.
One of the things I love to do when we go and speak, especially marriage stuff, is I love showing a picture.
And if I showed it to you, you'd say, oh, yeah, I've seen that picture.
It's kind of famous now because it was the last night we filmed the show.
It was in your mom and dad's living room.
And it was kind of a stately picture.
And someone from the crew snapped it.
It was the last time we filmed.
We were doing the clip show.
And it's beautiful.
It just, and when you look at it, you think, oh, man, the Robertsons.
You know, you're thinking four generations of faith and all these great things.
And then I love popping in a picture right after, which is a 1972 picture of mom and dad.
She's pregnant with your dad.
And there's Jace there, little kid with a bowl on his head and me, you know, at like seven years old.
And I say, that's the same family.
Wow.
But that family in 72 could never even imagine that 2017 family.
Because at that point, man, it was up against it, which is the blind.
And so I always like to show that to people because when you're doing a marriage conference
or you're doing the speaking out there, you know that someone came there that's in that place.
And they're just thinking, you know, their last effort, somebody told them you need to go here at this couple,
somebody go see the blind.
And you're trying to give them a glimpse that, look, God can take you to places you can never even
imagine going.
That's right.
But to do that, then we have to be honest.
For those of us who went through what Lisa and I went through, and look, we struggled
in marriage, everything we just shared with you, we carried that then into our marriage and
relationship.
And even though we were both Christians and loved God, we still had consequences from some
of those behaviors, just like Lisa mentioned with having physical consequences of caring
our children.
And so that's what happens.
And so we want to tell people, look, it's a life struggle.
It's right.
But then you always want to use that to help us.
people. But the ultimate example for us is somebody to get it right, love the Lord, and never stray
from the path. I mean, stay in his light. It's so much better there. That's right. You know,
that's part of what we try to do. So we're going to talk about and unpack, you know,
how can you be in this world and not of the world? And how can you be someone who might be in spaces
and places, but not be so critical of other people for where they're at and not define a person
by where they're at rather than who they are.
And so we just want to unpack this.
We've been reading in some scripture
and feel like we have some pretty cool points
as to maybe how Jesus would respond in this time.
And something that's really cool is that I'm reading this book right now
and it says Jesus is not just our Lord and Savior,
but he's our model.
And I thought that was a really cool point because, one,
like he is Lord of Lord's King of Kings.
Absolutely, he is God.
Yeah.
But he also was our model on how to be,
fully human because he came to earth as a full human and like denied his deity, you know,
to be human and to suffer and endure a cross. And like he could have just been like,
I'm God, forget this. But like he modeled himself as human, tapping into like being with the
father as a human and getting through hard things. And so what does it look like for Jesus to be our
model in this is kind of what I want to look at and think about. And it's really good. Yeah, I think this
could be a cool conversation. A long time ago, there was a long time ago, I don't know how long,
I don't know if y'all, do you remember the WWJD? What would Jesus do? Like, that was the whole thing
for a little while. The basis, what would Jesus do? And it kind of got like cheesy and corny or
whatever. But I think it's, it's really true and accurate. Like, we should look to what Jesus did and what
his time on this earth and the example that he was, because it is a model for us to be able to say, like,
okay, like, how do we, how should we act on this earth? And how do we, because he was, you know, in the world,
but not of the world, clearly.
And so how can we do that in the ways that he walked?
And how can we like model that?
Also, I think about this a lot.
Like, you know, Jesus was basically canceled by both sides as well.
You know, if you look at Jesus, he talked about that kind of whiplash from like one side being like, oh, you're two Christian,
than other side being like, oh, you're two in the world.
And really that is exactly what happened to Jesus.
The religious people, the Pharisees, the people who.
you know, were seen as being like the most Christian Christian, which of the time period
were the ones who ultimately called to kill Jesus.
Like they didn't understand him.
They couldn't.
He was saying things that were so counter to what they thought they knew about what being
religious looked like.
Yeah.
That they were trying to trap him.
They just, it just, they thought he didn't look like what they expected.
God, God's son, the Messiah to look like.
And so they canceled him.
And then the world didn't understand him either.
They were just like, you look at Pontch's Pilate in the end.
He was like, I don't really know what this is.
I'm going to wash my hands of it.
I feel like there's something special about him,
but I don't really understand it either.
And so both sides looked at Jesus and were like, oh, because he came with a message
that was so counter to what the whole religious thought was at the time.
And so, yeah, a lot of times when, you know, you're in that space where you're kind of in the middle,
I kind of think about that with Jesus.
I'm like, you know, you're in good company.
You might be in good company because that's really kind of where he found himself.
Yeah, that's so true.
That is so good.
So on that note, but I know like a lot of people when they are doing something maybe they're not supposed to do
or they're involved with sin, they're like, oh, well, Jesus, recline at the table,
sinners and we're not saying like this is an excuse to go sin because Jesus didn't sin when he
set at the table with sinners like Jesus did not become less holy when he set at table with sinners
he was always holy but he yet he was still in the presence with sinners and the whole problem here
that the that the Pharisees had was they were like you can't be holy and be around such unclean
because to them the Pharisees literally means like to be set apart and so they were like set apart from
anything that was unholy anything that was ungodly so in their mind like to be holy is to be set apart from
all things that are unholy and so here Jesus is and he's sitting with such unholy people in an unholy place
and they're like you can't be holy if you're there how could you be with them how could you recline at the table with them
and then say that, you know, you're God.
But the thing that Jesus, you know, preached and lived is, like, he is holy.
Right.
And he is always holy, no matter where he is.
You're holy in the heavens, be holy in my heart.
We sang that all, like, we're saying that the whole conference, and then I go to Disney World.
Well, does that mean I'm less holy because I'm in a place like Disney World?
No, because my holiness isn't defined by where I'm at.
it's defined by who is in me.
And so I'm not all of a sudden, because this is what people say in Instagram,
oh, if I'm in Disney World, that means I stand for everything Disney stands for.
That means that I agree with everything that Disney says.
That means, no, did Jesus do everything that the sinners did at the table?
No, did he agree with the way that they live?
No, he was reclining with them, but he wasn't living like them.
He didn't agree with them.
He was perfectly in truth, perfectly in holiness, perfectly being God.
And so for me, like as a Christian, as that as my model, if I go to a place that might have sinners around, that doesn't mean I all of a sudden become a sinner.
And doesn't even all of a sudden become and take on everything that that place stands for.
That doesn't change who I am and what's inside of me.
And I think that sometimes, like, it's true for the other way around too, just because you're in church.
And just because you're in a holy place doesn't mean you're holy.
You know, you could be looking holy, appearing holy, being around holy people, being around the best of the best.
But yet, if your heart is not pure, if your heart is not clean, if you are actually a sinner, living in unrighteousness, living in a whole, then you're not holy because you're in a church because you're in a holy place.
Just like you're not unholy because you're in an unholy place.
It's not about where you're at.
It's about who's in you, who you are.
Perhaps we, you know, with having Duck Dynasty, we kind of got.
this like front row seat to that like immediate like oh christians are going to hate you for this
and the world's going to hate you for that and like if you like you said just that toss and turn
if you're going to try to please either side you're going to get tossed and turn but if you just
like look to god and say like god i'm going to i want to follow you i want to please you the work is
not for the work is for you yeah then um you know he's going to guide you and he's going to mold you
into that and kind of like give you discernment in each space and where you are.

So I'm a little nervous today because I am sharing a very deep part of my story that I
I honestly haven't shared with very many people.
So obviously you know the story and my close friends and family now,
but this is the first time I'm sharing about it publicly.
So I'm very nervous about that.
Yes, and that's fair.
And I think that, you know, you talked about this.
You came on, well, that's good years ago after you wrote your poetry book.
And that felt like super vulnerable because it's one thing to write something on a page and it be poetic.
And another thing to just share from the heart and a podcast.
and a podcast setting.
But I also feel like watching you walk through what you've walked through over the past years and keep it so private, I think there's been like a beauty of that, but I also think there's like a time where, you know, you do get asked about these things a lot.
And it's like this is a space to share your story so openly and in a safe space where like if anybody asked from this point on, you can direct them here and say this is my heart and this is my story.
Yeah. And I think it's very interesting timing because I think a lot of people wait until after they're through something to share about it. And so it was a very big decision to choose to do this now and not wait until hopefully this season ends. So it's a very vulnerable place to be still on the season.
I think that that's huge though, Bella, that you decided to share your story before it had that miracle, has that miracle ending because a lot of people do wait for that. And
The reality is there are so many people who are out there listening this podcast who also have not had the breakthrough yet or the miracle happen yet.
And it's that wrestle with how do you live in the middle?
You know, how do you live in the tension of that?
The, you know, I'm believing for something, but it hasn't happened yet.
And so I'm super proud of you for sharing.
And just want to give a heads up to the audience because one of Bella's fears in sharing was that, you know, this is my story is different than,
everybody else's story. You know, I don't want someone to compare their story to my story. And I say
it's hard for this reason, but they're like, well, mine's harder for that reason. And the truth is,
everybody's story is different. Everybody's story is different that's walking through life,
walking through a 24-7 reality. But that doesn't mean that we still can't empathize with each other
and the things that we walk through. And just because this is her story and yours might look a little
bit differently. I just would ask the audience to have ears with empathy as you listen to Bella's
story. And Bella is going to speak with empathy as she considers your story. And I think at the end of
the day, the beauty and sharing is that we can bring comfort and hope to each other in the midst of
our stories. Because although timelines might be different, or although specific details in the
story are obviously going to be different, at the core human level, hurt is hurt. And
Pain is pain, time is time, waiting is waiting.
We all can empathize with the feeling and the emotion that we walk through as we walk through hard things in life.
Me and my husband, we always say, like, you know, there are people who have it way harder than us,
and there are people who have it way easier than us, and we fall kind of somewhere in between.
And one of my good friends, we always talk about just how there's so many different stories
when it comes to trying to have a child and there's infertility, miscarriage, and so many other things.
And me and one of my good friends who has a totally different story than me, we were there for each other through this journey a lot.
And we would always say, like, we want the same thing.
And I think that there is a, there is this universal bond when it comes to wanting to have a child that we want the same thing.
And, like, no matter if someone maybe has tried for a lot less, less,
time than us or a lot more than time than us we can bond over that central fact that like we want the same thing and I think that that's something that can be really helpful when it comes to like being there for friends through the situation and of course like you said I do want to be very sensitive about how there are people who have it way harder than us or have different stories than us but I hope that we can find that commonality that we do we are hoping for the same thing yeah this is great
I think that the hope is there.
And there's one Bible verse I wanted to read before we jump into everything because I thought this was so encouraging.
Because the other thing Bella mentioned being nervous about it, she was like, because I haven't gotten to the miracle part of my story yet, I don't want this to be hopeless.
Like, I still want this to be a hopeful conversation.
And I was reading Psalms this morning, Psalms 42, and it just struck me like the beauty in our ability to fully grieve a situation.
and yet at the same time fully hope and trust that God is God and God is good.
And I got to the verse that I've read so many times, but in Psalms 425, and it says,
Why are you cast down, oh, my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?
Question mark.
Hope and God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
So I read that, and I just kind of pass on because I've read it before.
Then I get to the next page in verse 11 of the same chapter.
It says the exact same thing.
why are you cast down on my soul and why are you in turmoil within me hope and god for i shall again
praise him my salvation and my god i'm like okay interesting says it twice in one chapter i keep reading
psalms 43 verse 5 why are you cast down on my soul and why are you in turmoil within me hope and god for i shall
again praise him my salvation and my god now this is like a song and the person's like continuously
saying the same thing like why are you cast down on my soul
in God for my salvation will come.
Or my salvation is in him.
And I thought about how, okay, why did he keep asking himself that?
You know, that question.
Like, why are you so down cast on my soul?
Was he genuinely, like, wondering why he's so sad?
Was he depressed for no reason?
Was he wondering?
And so I looked kind of back at the context of the timeline of when this writer was
writing this.
And no, it was very obvious what was the problem.
You know, they were in exile.
Jerusalem was destroyed. Like everything was going bad. They had probably been like deprived spiritually
for so long, not able to worship in the temple. So he wasn't actually wondering like, why would I be
sad? It's obvious why I would be sad. There's a very sad situation in front of me. There's a very
hard situation in front of me. There's a very depressing situation in front of me. But then he kept
repeating to himself, hope and God. For I shall again praise him. Therefore, I've praised
before, I've seen him do it before, I'll see him do it again. My salvation is in God. And I love how
he keeps asking himself the question, even though he knows why he's sad. He's more so just saying to himself,
I know how big my God is. I know how good you are. I know I'm going to praise you again because I
know my salvation's in you. One of my favorite songs through this whole journey has been
firm foundations. He won't. I think it's called that. And it's been one of my favorite songs I was
listening to it this morning and I feel like the most comforting part of that song to me has been
the line that says like I'm standing strong on you I'm going to make it through because my house
is built on you and I feel like I've just like clunked that it's actually been my screensaver for like
ever but it's one of my favorite lines of any song and it's I'm assuming referencing the
parable of the two builders and how if you build your house on sand it'll
fall but if you build your house on solid land then um then it'll say i don't know how to describe it but
um that song has been so powerful to me and i think that that's kind of the mindset i've tried to
have walking through this whole situation is like i'm standing strong on you like i'm going to make
it through because my house is built on you yeah not because the t's not because of this and i've really
my friend has really challenged me to
no matter what I try, no matter what I do, to know that it is all because I'm standing strong on him,
all because my house is built on God.
That, if we see a miracle, that that's why, you know.
And so, that has been probably, I would say, the anchor of my whole story.
And I think that even when people have suggested things to me,
It has been like, maybe I'll try that, but like if we do get pregnant, it will be because
my house is built on God and because he is, you know, guiding me through life.
And I think that my friend actually happened to get pregnant while she was drinking the teas.
And she would never tell anybody that.
She told me that.
And she was like, but that's not why.
And she really, really inspired me and encouraged me when she told me because she was like, that's not why.
like she recommended him she's like you should drink these teas and then like a few months into it she's
like I was drinking them the month I got pregnant but that doesn't really matter yeah and so I think that
the teas and I'm not saying that too like out her but I think that she was so I mean inspiring to me
when she told me that because I was like I've tried so many things and like in in places when I wasn't
as confident or wasn't as uh faithful I think that I would have maybe thought oh my gosh I
I know
when I was drinking these teas, you know?
But thankfully, I had heard to kind of remind me that that's not what it's about, you know.
To reframe that.
Because then if when the miracle comes, it's not just like, oh yeah, I drank these teas.
Everybody go drink these teas.
It's like, no, like I had a firm foundation of God through that whole thing.
That song, I love that song.
You know, when you walk into our house, I have that canvas and I wrote out the lyrics to that song.
Like the first week we moved in.
And I've always loved the line where it says, like, when everything around me is shaken,
and then it says, I've never been more glad.
And I remember when I first heard it being like, that is so interesting that he would say
when everything around me is shaken, I've never been more glad that I put my hope in Jesus.
You know, that it's not that you're glad things are shaken.
You're glad you put your faith in Jesus, your hope in Jesus.
And you can be glad in the midst of it.
Like, I've genuinely seen you have so much joy.
I've seen you grief.
Like I said, I've seen you.
Mad, I've seen all the things.
But also, like, you still lived your life.
You went to school, graduate, like, you've done so much, but it's insane.
You went to London.
Mom told me when we first got on this journey, like, she was like, why don't you
bucket list?
And I was like, bucket list.
She was like, why don't you just make a list of things you want to do and that you
probably won't do after you have kids?
Like, make a list of things.
And I was like, okay.
So I started making a list.
And me and Jacob just started crossing things off the list.
going to Oxford and starting there was like a huge thing on my list that I wanted to do going to grad school was a big thing on my list and doing those things have really reminded me like God really does like love me because he knows that like if I would have had a kid maybe when I wanted to I wouldn't have got to do this or I wouldn't have got to do that and not that it's about that if I would have had a kid then I would have been yeah not bit not have missed out you know but I've had these memories and these things that I wanted to accomplish
I've gotten to because it didn't happen my way.

gave you directly or that you just kind of learned from his life. So John Luke, you want to kick us off.
Oh, wow. A lot of pressure. Yeah, I mean, there's so many things. Like, I could go into talk about
advice about things he's shared about, like life and the gospel and loving your family and, you know,
those kind of like spiritual things. But the thing I, the advice that he gave me that I think about most often
is whenever I was working for him one summer, so I was like 14,
and we were building duck blinds and like working out there.
And, you know, I'd be working on something and I'm like, can get,
I'm kind of a perfectionist, so I would be like,
I try to make sure the board's straight, trying to make sure the screws right,
trying to like doing all the stuff.
And he would always say, hey, good enough for a duck mine, let's move on.
And I think about that a lot in the sense of like,
sometimes you're working on something
and you've got to like
keep the most important thing
the most important thing.
Like it's just a duck line.
Like don't spend all your time
working on something that is
not going to matter in the end.
Keep the big picture and just keep moving on.
That's good. I like that.
You know what's funny?
I just thought about this because I haven't asked you
a best piece of advice in a long time.
When you were first on the podcast,
you remember when you said if you have to eat a frog,
eat it first thing in the morning.
Yeah.
I think about that.
all the time actually. So sometimes those little one liners like, hey, it's just a dump line.
Like keep going. I actually stick with you the most, you know. I love that. All right. Cole,
you got some good advice from on pebble fill? Yeah, I think so. I was trying to think of like some
one-liners or different things like that. And there's so many that he had. But I think the biggest thing
was just the way that he led by example. The way he led his life.
I mean, one of his one-liners was, let me show you how to do this.
You know, you're getting food.
There's a bunch of people in line.
He just cuts right in front of you and says, let me show how to do this.
He'll show you how to do it.
But I think to his larger life and just, for me, it's been so convicting when I look at my own life.
I look at the life that he led and the amazing man that he was.
And then I look at my own life.
I'm like, oh my goodness.
Like I am so short of the man that he was.
But, you know, it's such a large burden that legacy can be that we carry on.
But what an amazing legacy that it is, I think that we have the opportunity to walk in his footsteps.
So I think a lot of times he did not lead with his words.
He led by just getting up and showing you how to do it.
Yeah. It's great.
That's so true, actually.
Yeah. So true. And I feel that. I've thought about that a lot. Christian and I have both talked about that. Like so much of what we were inspired by by the way he lived and looking at our own life being like, man, we don't do that. We don't live like that. We're a little bit off from that. And then it's so cool how much of how he lived that's really actually tied to the Bible. Like he just laid it out there. What was the verse? It's like first of the Solonians where it's like it says make it your ambition to live a quiet life.
And then it talks about working with your hands and not depending on someone else.
And then it says, for then it will gain the respect of the outside world.
And he quoted that and he lived like that, you know?
And I'm like, okay, how do I start implementing more of that in my life?
So it's so true.
We've been having those same conversations.
That's one of my favorite things that he is.
Realtree did a video probably like six or seven years ago.
And he's talking about that.
he's quoting that verse and just the way he says it he says make it your ambition and he says make it
your ambition like three or four times in a row and to live a quiet life to my he leans in he goes mind
your own business and to work with your hands so that you may not be dependent on anyone and there's not
a human being on this planet i think that live that more than him and when we talk about advice
It's not it's not so much of hey, he sat you down and he said this.
You know, he lived that way.
And he was a man of few words when it was just you and him most of the time.
And so, but you did get these one-liners from them.
And then it was backed up by his actions.
And so even stuff where I'll watch him on a video from, you know, before I was born or,
or like the video that that Realtree did where he's, it's showing a day in a day in the
life of his of his work day essentially and and then he's preaching the gospel at the end of it
that backs up watching him and taking that in it backs up those little one-liners that he said
and on a more humorous note I guess I just started dating Brighton and we've been dating a couple
years and we were in high school you know and it was it was me and him and we were riding back
from a duck hunt and he said he said read you having sex
And I said, no, sir.
And he said, all right, well, you keep that thing in your pocket.
It would be all right.
You know?
But it's like, hey, that's short, quick to the point.
Makes a lot of sense.
And I'll never forget it.
It's so real.
So, I mean, he did have those.
He had some one-liner.
He had a lot of one-liners.
Some may live on.
Some we hope do not resurface on the internet.
My favorite thing that was ever said about him
was when Aunt Jan told, who baptized him again? Bill Smith, Bill Smith, told Bill Smith, if you convert Phil, he'll convert thousands.
And that was 60 years ago, you know, it's just, it really is incredible to see just how many people.
I mean, we've all gotten hundreds and hundreds of texts, you know, over this week.
And it's just everyone is texting me.
And, you know, they say, you know, so sorry for your loss, but, you know, he's in heaven.
Titan, you know, heaven got a Titan this week, you know, is what I've gotten a lot.
And everyone's sharing their own personal stories of how, even if they never met him, how he impacted their life and their faith and how they grew closer to Jesus and grew in their faith through by just watching him.
And at the end of the day, he cared about preaching the gospel.
but he didn't care that they were watching them.
He didn't care about any of that.
He's going to do it no matter who was listening.
That's right.
Yeah.
It's so true.
Before this, I mentioned to dad and mom was like,
oh, just like my biggest regret is I never went duck hunting with him.
And dad said he didn't want you to.
It's like, it's true.
Not that he didn't love me, but that was his thing.
He wasn't just inviting anyone.
So I do want to hear from y'all what was hunting like with Pebbleville.
Okay.
start because this is going to be the shortest. So I only
I only went hunting with them twice.
Okay? And both times, the first time I went, this is what he said.
He, I had all my stuff, I had my gun. And he sat down and he said, John Luke, you're
what's called a limit extender. So you just, you sit there, you're going to add to our limit
and you just watch and observe. And then the second time, same thing. We got in the boat. He said,
You just stay down there on the end there and just,
I would be in charge of, like, getting the snacks together and stuff
and, like, on the second time.
But that was it.
That was late.
Because he was so intense.
Yeah, he was so intense.
Yeah.
Everyone was, in terms of hunting, I mean, you were dead weight until you proved yourself
for a long time.
Uh-huh.
You had to really show up and carry your part in the hunting world.
And then, you know, you maybe would get a thumbs up, but otherwise, you're just dead weight.
That would be, like, the greatest thing ever if you got the thumbs up.
Or the approval.
as I've heard from Christian to even blow the duck call.
Kind of bridging the gap with what he passed down to our dads that has gotten into us.
Just his, how ferocious he was with preaching the gospel.
And, I mean, he was trying to baptize everybody.
He never had a conversation with anyone that he wasn't trying to work the gospel in
or just straight up telling it to him, you know.
And, I mean, we watched our performance.
parents our whole lives. I mean, they had people sitting in our living room growing up on the
couch preaching them the gospel and going and finding some water and baptizing them. I mean,
our whole lives like three nights a week forever. You know, and they would come in. They would sit down.
My dad would preach them the gospel and he'd say, you need to go back and you need to read the book
John and then you can come back and we'll have a Bible study and but you got to start there. And so I was
probably, you know, I was 12 or 13. And I said, dad, I want to be baptized. And it was a carbon copy of
what I've seen him do. I've said this like so many times. I mean, I say this every time I speak.
And it was just a carbon copy of what I'd seen him do hundreds of times before. Go back, read the
book of John and come back and talk to me, you know, and it just, it made me, it made me realize
that now as I've gotten older and I live in Nashville and I have my own family and I'm involved in
in my own church and we lead a Bible study and and I've got people coming in my house now.
You know, it's just I can hold on to that of there is absolutely nothing that can waver me
from from what I'm doing is right, you know, the thought of, okay, I've seen this done for
literally generations. I know how to do this, you know, and I just think that's so valuable
because that's something that, you know, you can't really, you can't just have a conversation with
someone and teach them how to go preach the gospel. I mean, it you can, they can say the right words,
but it's so much more than that. And it's just, it has inspired me so much to, to just be bold
in my faith. And, and it's inspired me too, in my study too, because I'm like, hey, I need to
always be prepared to give an answer, you know? And so it's, I'm studying more and I'm preparing
and I'm, my faith is growing like that. And it's just, it really is amazing to think about, you know,
which is of just an example.
