Starting point is 00:02:43 As a caller into the Dan Patrick show, though, now is part of the Dan Patrick Network, I believe. He's got the Shay and Irving podcast, as well, he's part of the DP Takes a Gamble, part of the podcast of the Dan Patrick. Dan Patrick Podcast Network. I've been following him on social media for quite some time because we seem to have a lot of things in common. Cowboys, horns, Texas. So welcome, Shane Irving. Thanks a lot, Will.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Thanks for having me. How are we feeling, by the way? Let's just put our finger on the pulse real quick. How are we feeling? Cowboys, horns. If you were calling into the D.P. show right now, are we confident, are we insecure, Shay and Irving? insecure scared i feel tricks i feel beat up i feel lied to by mccarthy and jerry and pretty much the entire
Starting point is 00:03:33 staff i think mike zimmer might need to go back to the bingo halls of retirement i think that he was brought in to stop the run and he could not do that and i'm scared to death well yeah but i feel bipolar schizophrenic i feel like i need more evidence because week one looked great week two looks horrific. I don't know yet what's the real Mike Zimmer defense because after week one, it's like, oh, my God, you know, Aaron Rogers was afraid of this guy. Mike McCarthy was afraid of this guy. Look at the way they confuse offenses.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Week two, they can't stop the run and they're about to take on Derek Henry and Lamar Jackson. Right. My fear is this is another Shanahan-led offense, right? QBiak is a disciple of Shanahan, and Zim couldn't figure it out. And he hasn't really figured out in his career, which scared. bears me, and Dan Quinn couldn't figure it out either. So I don't know. I mean, he might be great against everybody but Shanahan, but the real goal here is to beat San Francisco in the NFC championship game. Like, that's what we all see coming. And that's why they hired Zim. And I don't
Starting point is 00:04:34 know if it's going to work. Yeah, so that would be like everybody from that coaching tree, Cubiak in New Orleans, Miami, San Francisco. And it'll be a test when you run up against teams like that, Green Bay. Tell me your story, man. So you're Shea and Irving calling into the Dan Patrick show, and here you are today with your own show on the Dan Patrick Network. Tell me how this goes down. Well, I started calling in when I was still living in Irving,
Starting point is 00:05:05 calling in about the Cowboys, because Dan Patrick really, and I'll say this to his face, he has this Northeast bias, right? Everything's focused on New York. Media in general, everybody loves New York, and he wasn't talking enough about Texas stuff. or even stuff south of the Mason Dixon. So I called in yelling at him about that. And that was like 15 years ago, man.
Starting point is 00:05:26 And I just kept calling in. And then I moved up to Connecticut for a job. And he filmed in Connecticut and did a show there. And they just kind of convinced me to show up. And that was like, yeah. I mean, it's been 10 years since I've had my own show. But I just revealed my face for the first time like a week ago. I've just been audio.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Really? Yeah. Just a week ago. Revealed your face. Yeah. By the way, for anybody listening on the Canaan Sports Edition of the Will Kane Show podcast and not seeing the video, the face and body match the voice. Like, you know, you don't want to get sideways with Shea at 2 am.
Starting point is 00:06:06 at a honky tonk in Irving. You just, this is, it's physically and vocally intimidating. Man, what I love about this story is you're not a singular example. And I'll give you a couple other. So famously, PFT commenter, part of the Barstool Network, part of the part of my take podcast, was somebody commenting on pro football talks articles on their website, and he becomes a personality for Barstool Sports. My own producer, Tinfoil Patrick, was somebody that honestly I got to know on X, formerly Twitter, in the comment section, and he got to know somebody else that I highly respect offline. And so we began to have a conversation offline, and I respected his editorial point of view and potential for content. So what's interesting about that is people are always asking me, hey, Will, how do you get started?
Starting point is 00:06:58 Hey, how do you get breakthrough? And I don't know the answer. Like, I have my story, you have your story. There's no, there's no golden brick road. There's no pathway. It's sort of like you come in with your lance and you start tilting at things and cutting down the path in front of you. and there you go. You made it from call in to on air.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Yeah, it's kind of wild. I mean, I know a guy that works with you now, the other guy, too,'s. And he was the first call screener that I had to get past 15 years ago. You know, I had to convince him that what I had to say on the radio was going to be, A, you know, was going to be censored. B, was going to be good enough for air time. So, and then I just, I got to know that dude pretty well. and then here we are it's kind of a trip when you think about it yeah yeah talking about two a days
Starting point is 00:07:49 dan i've made the joke a couple of times now it's like i'm meeting i'm his college buddy meeting his high school friends and now i realize that everybody calls him twos back in high school and now i have to pretend like i've always been calling him twos as well so um he's just two of days he's two a days right now or dan i'll get to twos by the way one more example and this this this comes from my show um jersey jerry who i think is blowing up at barstool sports jersey jerry used to call into the will cane show on espin and like you just was a really good call and we kept taking him and kept taking him i'm not saying i put jerry on the map because he did a lot of hustle outside of that but now look at him he's huge on barstool sports i didn't
Starting point is 00:08:31 know that that's wild yeah yeah he was just really good and we had a we you know i always wanted to cultivate that chay like i'm sure dan has as well and obviously i think the most famous model of this is Howard Stern, like cultivate a community of really good contributors out there, callers into your show. It enhances the show. And before you know it, for many people, it turns into, I don't know, we'll call it an opportunity, if not a career. For sure. You ain't lying. All right, man. I want to go through a couple of sports stories with you as well, and we'll go ahead and pick Will versus the experts this week with Shane Irving. So story, we almost did this this week on Fox News.
Starting point is 00:09:14 The story out of Tennessee. The Tennessee volunteers are going to charge a 10% fee to all ticket buyers to supplement what they pay to the athletes. Now, a lot of people. It seems to be the general consensus, Shea, to be mad. This is outrageous. How much money do they need? They're going to pass along to the ticket buyer.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And don't they have enough money to pay players? I have a different take, but I want to hear yours. It's an arms race, baby. Figure it out. I mean, y'all want to be the best. You want to get the best. Look what Texas is doing. I can testify to that.
Starting point is 00:09:48 They've been getting all kinds of players. The D-Line got completely renovated and re-amped. They got some wide receivers that are incredible. It's a flat-out arms race. And if you're not, I mean, Georgia just didn't Kemp just sign an executive order saying the school can pay the players directly instead? I know the endowments are out of control and whatnot. But if you want to win, this is the new landscape you live in.
Starting point is 00:10:10 That's it. And to the point of the arms race, here's what, so being a part of this debate a few years ago when everybody was making the argument not just for NIL, but for paying players, you know, what I said is you're going to just be changing the face of college football. Now, you can have an argument about whether or not it's good or it's bad, but make no mistake about the earthquake that you're unleashing here. And it's interesting when I, I subscribe shade to the athletic. I think it's really good. I understand that they have a cultural bias, but they do some really good reporting. And I read the article on The Athletic about this story. And then I like to look at the comments.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And the comments were all outraged, that Tennessee is going to create this 10% fee. But what did you think was going to happen? That's my point. Like, you just reintroduced capitalism, pure capitalism in the college football. Ultimately, capitalism is going to pass along the cost to the customer. That's how it works. this idea that never never land idea like the coaches can take less that's absurd you know why it's absurd not because you think it's right or wrong but because if that coach takes less some
Starting point is 00:11:18 other school if he's good will come along and pay him more welcome to the market this is what you just did and you just passed along the cost to the customer you i mean that's exactly it it's it's now but it's now free for all like they're going to clamp down so if i'm tennessee i'm taxing as much as possible. I mean, they're selling out a stadium of $100,000 against Kent State. The fans are going to pay it. They know the money's out there. Go get it.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Go win. See what you can do. Yeah, absolutely. You cannot have this both ways of saying it was a plantation before and athletes were exploited. And now we shouldn't have students and ticket holders pay for it that it's a free market. This is the adult world. This is how it works.
Starting point is 00:12:05 All right. Little game of real or fake. I want to go over to the NFL. I want to ask you about some quarterback situations. And here we are two weeks into the season. And you tell me if what I propose to you is real or fake. It's five different scenarios in the NFL when it comes to the quarterback. First of all, Bryce Young is cooked. He's done. He's a bust as the number one overall pick in the draft a few years ago. He's a bust with the Panthers. Real. Absolutely real. Dude's too tiny anyway. Never should have been the number one. I don't know if I agree.
Starting point is 00:12:40 I don't know if I agree. I feel like... So, one of my models has always been Warren Buffett. Like, dude got rich, you know, somehow with a pretty good philosophy on value investing. And it's always like, zig when the rest of the market is zagging. And I feel like the market is zinging on Bryce Young.
Starting point is 00:13:01 And it makes me think about, well, is that real or is that fake? So Mel Kuiper comes out and he says, yeah, Bryce Young has issues like you point out, he's small, he's short, but so was Baker, Bryce Young's smaller. So was Kyler. So is Kyler. Bryce is even a little smaller than Kyler. But he's in an awful situation. They just changed everybody from the offensive coordinator to the quarterback's coach. He has no system of consistency that he's been around. And you put him in an awful position to succeed. And so if I'm an NFL team, who knows what will happen in Carolina? I just look at places like that, Shea, and I think, is there an opportunity for value? And you're a cowboy fan, I'm a cowboy fan. I thought the same thing when the Cowboys went after Trey Lance. Now, is he worth the fourth round pick? And does his contract mean anything to you when you've got to re-sign DAC?
Starting point is 00:13:55 But I just, I like buying lotto tickets. I like zgging when everything else is zagging. If you can get Bryce Young at some point here, if the Panthers give up, cheap. number one overall pick for, say, a fourth-round pick, I don't think he's cooked. I don't think, I would not yet sell Bryce Young. I hear you. I don't think he could read a defense, Will.
Starting point is 00:14:15 I don't think, and the same goes for Lance. He might have all the physical attributes you need, but if you can't read, you ain't playing. And the game is slower in college, and I don't think Bryce had to read that fast. I just don't think he can see the field flat out. The amount of times that he misses Adam Thielen, if you watch you all 22,
Starting point is 00:14:32 whether he's scared of getting sacked or not, he just flat out doesn't see open receivers like that and he needs to gain 20 pounds like to me that's just too far that bridge is way too far to cross well you're right about tray lance by way would you do this i don't think they would do it but i saw a proposal how about tray lance to the miami dolphins for jalen right the running back they pick this year i think in the fourth round from tennessee done you do that with the cowboys absolutely i would do that in a heart immediately and cut dalvin they wouldn't do it though. Yeah, I would too. Because we would do it in a heartbeat, we know that that would never happen for the dolphins. All right, real or fake number two. Well,
Starting point is 00:15:15 something's got to happen with Trey Lance. Now the DAC has signed for the long term, we're done with the Trey Lance gamble. So can we turn that into something? Sam Darnold is actually good. Sam Darnold with the Vikings, career resurgence, two games in. He's like near the top of the league in QBR, and maybe a little bit like the argument I was making about Bryce Young, like everybody sold on Sam Darnold, said he couldn't read, said he couldn't play with New York, said he couldn't win the job in San Francisco, and now all of a sudden look at him in Minnesota. Somebody bought Low, the Vikings, and they're cashing in on Sam Darnold. To me, how different is Sam Darnold than Kirk Cousins? I mean, Sam Darnold's got better
Starting point is 00:15:57 knees. But if you have Justin Jefferson and a running game that's with a decent defense, I think you can play quarterback at Minnesota. I don't see a huge gap between Darnold and Cousins at all. Well, if you don't see a gap between Donald and Cousins, then that brings up, I know he's hurt, but they drafted him early, J.J. McCarthy from Michigan, and the presumption has been this will be McCarthy's team. I'm wondering now if Sam Darnold can hold off, because it's looking like the answer could be yes, hold off J.J. McCarthy. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I don't see starting, I don't see why you would start JJ at all with
Starting point is 00:16:37 Darnold playing the way he's playing. Let him sit. Let him pull a Brady. Let him sit a year or so. Fuck it. See, Sam is a great example of my buy-low philosophy, buy the lotto ticket. I agree with you, by the way. I think Sam Darnold is good. All right, number three, real or fake. Derek Carr and or Kyler Murray are top five quarterbacks. No, I mean, Kyler, you could have an argument for Kyler before you can with Carr. Carr, that's the system, dude.
Starting point is 00:17:10 That's QBiac getting in his ear. We've seen Carr for years. He does not do what he did last week or the week before. I mean, they put up 40 points a game the first two weeks of the season. That is not a Mr. Carr specialty, right? Kyler, I could see him being a comeback player of the year this year, Will. I think that
Starting point is 00:17:29 Kyler Murray has some freaky tangibles and intangibles as long as he stops playing call of duty. I think the dude can be fierce. I've always been a little bit of a believer in Kyler. You and are both Longhorn fans. I mean, I saw how good he was.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I'm not a fan because he was not cool with Sam Ellinger at Texas. But the guy can play and Trey McBride at Tide End Allen High School exactly Yeah we wanted him at Texas
Starting point is 00:18:02 Couldn't get him lost him day and him And then to OU Trey McBride at Tide in Marvin Harrison Jr. Michael Wilson Greg Crouch I mean James Connor They got weapons in Arizona
Starting point is 00:18:16 And if Kyler can just distribute That ball around By himself time I agree with you I'm not sure I'm right to say Kyler is top five. I don't know what the debate will be midway into this season on whether or not he can get himself.
Starting point is 00:18:29 I mean, I would say going into the season, you're probably putting Kyler at 15, 16, 17 range of quarterback. How high can he climb is the debate? Now, Derek Carr, if you're right, okay, and I think you probably are, Jerry Jones, any NFL owner, if Kyle Shanahan and his. tree can create what Derek Carr is today out of what he was yesterday because of Kubiak, your number one job should be finding offensive coordinators who are system guys
Starting point is 00:19:06 that can turn average quarterbacks into guys that score 90 points in two weeks. Because what a value, man. Cowboys just had to pay DAC $60 million a year. But if you can turn Brock Purdy into a Super Bowl contending quarterback, your number one focus as an organization be where can i find that coach i agree i think that entire tree should have been gobbled up by jerry years ago i think as soon as they dump kellen they should have been searching for that immediately yeah kellen not doing so well in philadelphia and i don't know how big the tree is like i don't vintage kellin to throw on third down how do you throw you got
Starting point is 00:19:44 sayquan you paid him some good money and it's how do you not he should have caught the ball and then do with tush push. Why the hell? How is that not the next two plays? Kellyn getting cute, trying to be. Yeah. Yeah. That was a hilarious loss. Sorry, Eagles fans. That was a hilarious loss. And it makes me, actually makes me think, I wonder how good the Falcons can be this year. I mean, say what you about Cousins. That's a hell of a drive at the end of the game with the Falcons. All right. If I told you, you got to bet on the future of one of these three quarterbacks, is number four. Who's real, who's fake? Which quarterback do you put your franchise in the hands of? Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars, Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears, Jalen Daniels, Washington
Starting point is 00:20:37 commanders. Damn. That's good. I mean, franchise, okay. And it doesn't have to be with their current team. It can be my made-up franchise. Yep. Yes. I think if you could develop Caleb Williams into reading quicker and getting the ball out faster, I would
Starting point is 00:21:03 put my team's hands in Caleb Williams. Yeah. So he would be my third pick. Wow. My franchise, starting from scratch, I don't believe in Caleb Williams. This looks I don't know. It doesn't look good. It's only two
Starting point is 00:21:19 games into a rookie season. I think he's going to struggle. I think he tries too hard. I think he just, he takes too many hits and he holds a ball too damn long. A lot of those sacks are on him. And he just, I don't think he can figure that out in year one. And he paints his fingernails. I might take Jane, I might take Jane Daniels and then Trevor Lawrence. And look, okay, so I think I would take Jaden Daniels and then Trevor Lawrence under the same theory of, if I just put Trevor Lawrence into the right system, the right coaching, Surely he's the guy everybody thought he would be more than Caleb Williams had more doubters than Trevor Lawrence. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Something I like about Jaden Daniels. That leaves me number five, by the way. Generational quarterbacks. Like, if you think about it, Trevor Lawrence was in, he was in a conversation and he was in a category of quarterbacks who are can't miss that don't come along every year. We're not just talking about guys that are number one overall picks, but guys that come along every five to seven years. you know, Elway types, can't miss quarterbacks. Andrew Luck would be in that generational quarterback category. And Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be in that category as well, Shea.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Yeah. He was. He was supposed to be. He was it. He was sunshine from the damn movie. You know, remember the Titans. He was everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Yeah. So what's wrong? If you put Lawrence with the Saints, I mean, what does he do that call? I mean, how, there's no chance that David Carr is better than Trevor Lawrence at the quarterback position, just being a quarterback. There's no chance, no chance at all. Or purdy.
Starting point is 00:23:00 I mean, I think there's several systems you could drop him in and he'd be nasty. Who do you think belongs? Like, if we do take a survey, obviously we go back to Elway. He's the example. Everybody knew Elway was going to be great. I think Caleb Williams had too many doubters. to be considered a generational quarterback like that. That's my opinion.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Like, if you just kind of surveyed the last 20 years. Swingblade. Patrick Mahomes wasn't that. Swingblade. Who? Eli Manning. I've never heard him call Slingblade. Never heard him talk?
Starting point is 00:23:36 I've never heard that. I get it. Slingblade. I mean, they were so big that they didn't even have to go to San Diego. He was, he was, can't miss. Say it was Peyton and him both. who came in a state of college. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Yeah. Mahomes wasn't, by the way. I mean, he was drafted. Whatever, it ended up being 10th. People didn't think that's who he. At a high school, too. Right. Yeah, so Eli,
Starting point is 00:24:05 Peyton's back in the 90s. If we just stick to the 2000s. Right. Not RG3. Andrew Luck, like we said, I feel like we're forgetting somebody in there, but certainly Trevor Lawrence as well. Pretty up there?
Starting point is 00:24:21 Nah, I don't think so. I don't think everybody was convinced on Matt Liner. Not, and obviously, I mean, you almost have to go number one overall because you wouldn't last, you know, so it can't be Josh Allen types. I know that Josh Allen had doubters. No, he was not. He had doubters. Yeah. And I don't, and there's nobody next year, by the way.
Starting point is 00:24:43 The next guy. The next guy is our guy. And I'm not talking about Quinn Ewers. All day. Yeah. Quinn will go in the first round. And by the way, I don't know where you feel like. I think Quinn's really good.
Starting point is 00:24:57 I think the arm talent on Quinn is incredible. Quinn's, he's always a live arm. The next generation quarterback is at Texas. Yeah, his arm has always been live. Quinn's arm since South Lake Carroll. That arm talent's been written about, you know. But Arch is, I think, obviously, I think Arch is a better quarterback, pure quarterback. I think Quinn's arm is alive as hell.
Starting point is 00:25:17 and he's going to go in the first round, but I don't think he's better in Archie at all. Right now? You think Arch is better right now than Quinn? Oh, I don't. Being a quarterback, at being a straight-up quarterback, I think Archie's better. At being a team leader and having the locker room and all those others, I think Quinn's experience is going to play out better for the team. But I think just as a pure quarterback, Archie's got him.
Starting point is 00:25:43 See, I think Quinn's a little disrespected. And I probably am guilty of some of the disrespect to myself. This is a guy who's beaten Alabama, who's beaten Michigan. And when you look at the resumes of college quarterbacks, you do not come across many with the kind of victories that Quinn has. And by the way, his road record. His road record is like incredible. And I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I think he's wild, but I think Quinn's, I'm not saying he's a can't miss quarterback for the NFL because he's still kind of small. He gets injured. But I think he's underrated. I think people are underwriting Quinn. Right now, if I was going in, I'm playing Georgia as Texas will be, or I'm going into college football playoff as Texas will be, I'm much more confident with Quinn as my quarterback than Arch.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Yeah, I think experience matters, though. I agree with you. I've disrespect to Quinn as well. But I think experience really matters. And him going back to the playoffs with this team, I think will be more beneficial for the Longhorns than Archie doing it. But just as a pure, I mean, the arm talent's there for Quinn, but he doesn't have the strength, the size, the mobility that Archie does.
Starting point is 00:26:56 The speed, he just doesn't have it. But he's a quarterback for sure, and he's a leader of this team. That's for damn sure. And the interesting debate will be, we'll see where Quinn ends up, because there's already people saying Quinn's on his way to being the second best Texas quarterback of all time. If you look at the numbers and what he's done, It's Vince Young, Quinn Ewers, then Colt McCoy.
Starting point is 00:27:20 That's who we'd have to pass, Colt McCoy. But we'll see what Arch's career looks like at the end. And I don't know if Arch would end up with one or two years starting next year. Would it add up to one or two years for him as a starting quarterback at Texas? Then I'll see what his ceiling is and whether or not he's better than Texas. And by the way, just to get real nerded out for a minute, I don't know how big a fan you are. I actually really like Trey Owens, the third straight guy. I watched the spring game.
Starting point is 00:27:48 I thought he was a stud, and I'm already having debates with my Texas insiders about whether or not Trey Owens is a transfer candidate or he gets a year or two to start after Arch before Raja Bell's son steps in. Dia Bell is a big-time recruit headed to Texas. Yes, yes. Trey Owens is legit, obviously. He's a highly recruited son of a gun. He can play.
Starting point is 00:28:12 All right, let's do Will versus the experts, me versus Shea and Irving. I'm smoking them just so you know, Trey. I'm beating the experts pretty handily week to week we play five games to be fair you had you had Andrew Perloff as one of your experts so that's just I'll call that a buy week because that ain't real McLevin went one and four yeah he he's got he's he's not good he wasn't good he also bet me that Cam Cam Ward would go ahead of Quinn Ewers in the draft what so we've got cheese steaks yeah he said Cam Ward will go ahead of Ewers I said Ewers will go ahead And we've got barbecue, Texas barbecue versus Philly cheese steaks on the line on that.
Starting point is 00:28:52 By the way, I mean, if I get him a brisket from something like Pecan Grove in Dallas, that's worth a lot more than a couple of cheese steaks from Philadelphia. I was going to say, yeah, you're getting the short end of that, well. All right, I pick five games that we're going to focus on here, and I just pick them because they're the games I want to watch. I don't pick them because they're the easiest to bet. This week is three college, two pro. Here we go, versus Shane.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Shay and Irving. Number 11, U.S.C. at Michigan, Michigan is getting five and a half to you, Shay. U.S.C. lay it. Totally agree. Michigan's not good. No. They're not good. I think USC is good. I think they're getting disrespect. Talk about disrespect. I think USC is getting disrespectful. They got a legit quarterback. And they all have. I agree. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:45 And they got a victory on their resume. mate, over LSU. I mean, they've done something in this short season that very few teams have done. Second, 12 Utah visiting 14 Oklahoma State plus two. Oki Light plus two. Give me the money line on that action. I don't care if Cam Rising is back. I trust in the mullet.
Starting point is 00:30:09 And I think this Oki Light team is legitimate. I want to take, okay. State. I'm going to take Utah and here's why I took or I watched Oklahoma State versus Arkansas and that game was awful. Both teams were trying to lose it. And I'm like, how are you betting on Oklahoma State? That's not somebody you can count. Camarizing former Texas guy by the way. He's 20, I think he's 25 years old now, maybe 24. He's got to be. Seventh year guy starting at Utah. Give me Utah. All right. This is the big college game of the week. Number six, Tennessee, visiting Oklahoma, number 15, and Oklahoma gets seven.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Seven might be big. It might sound big for those that haven't watched Tennessee or know about that quarterback. The volleyball player, I call him Akuna Matata, because his last name is too hard for me to pronounce. Dude, laying seven, I'll take that. Take it. I don't care if it's at OU. And Hyple, Hypo, by the way, this is pretty much a revenge game. for him. He hates OU and Venables.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Venables damn near refused to recruit him and OU refused to hire him pretty much. And he got passed over. He's going to run it up if you can't. I don't like this because we're on the same side so far on two out of three. My only hesitation
Starting point is 00:31:34 is what is Tennessee done besides? Was it Kent State 70 to nothing? Like they look really good. But I just don't see any quality competition. Meanwhile, OU's having trouble getting past Tulane, who may be better than everybody thinks, by the way. They may, they've given a couple of people tough games.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I think Tennessee is just really good. I did too. Why you call Nico, I believe, Amaya Lava, something like that, the volleyball player. He played volleyball in high school. Did he? Yeah, he was like a state rank, like, he was a freak in volleyball. I don't know how the hell he did that and football, but he did it. In California or Hawaii?
Starting point is 00:32:16 Yeah. And it wasn't, it was like men's volleyball. It wasn't like, you know, the, what do you call it, transgender? He was just dudes, like, really. You know, I'd say I went to Pepperdine and my wife, who was my girlfriend for a short period in college, who we went our separate ways for a variety of reasons, ended up dating this, like, Olympic level volleyball player. for years and so I always joke about volleyball but like where you and I grew up Irving Sherman by the way what year did you graduate erving did you go what'd you do Irving Nimitz what high school
Starting point is 00:32:57 were you marth MacArthur MacArthur but then they shipped me off to military school for the last year high school in New Mexico but yeah McCarthy okay we were on the west side of irving there's got be a story about military school there's a couple yeah um what year did you graduate high school that was 02 okay you're younger than me we played irving here and there Sherman high school yeah we played y'all we played y'all
Starting point is 00:33:24 I mean Sherman's damn near Oklahoma so it was a bus ride from hell but yeah careful but still in Texas still on the right side of the Red River volleyball was a not a men's sport growing up in Irving and Sherman so when my wife when my wife you know
Starting point is 00:33:42 ends up with this Olympic level of volleyball player which, by the way, I'm not going to insult volleyball players because having been around it at Pepperine, what I realize is these are actually big, tall, athletic dudes. I mean, they really are. Your average volleyball player's got to be, he might be 6'6, 6'5, kind of skinny, but pretty athletic,
Starting point is 00:34:02 and definitely with hops, I can get up there. So I give respect. I mean, you're an athlete. I mean, we grew up where you're supposed to say, you're playing volleyball. What are you on the girls team? but yeah go out to california i don't know what other states are in volleyball but there are some dudes that play you know what i mean by a dude like a dude a regular dude there are dudes
Starting point is 00:34:23 that play volleyball yeah like a heterosexual right right uh yeah to the nfl uh we both are on Tennessee. We're both on USC. We separate on Utah versus Oklahoma State to the NFL. All right. Chiefs visiting Falcons. Falcons getting three and a half. Chiefs. Okay, good. We're going our separate ways. I got the Falcons. Okay. Chiefs don't look that great. I've lost so much money betting against the chief. I mean, I don't know. I think they put it together.
Starting point is 00:35:05 They have not looked great. No, they ain't. have not looked good. You're right. It's a dumb. It's just, like you said, it's a dumb bet to go against the Chiefs. You can lose a lot of money. I'm betting on they haven't looked that great offensively. Travis Kelsey's been a nothing this season. Yeah. Yeah, the little explosion with Xavier Worthy and Rishi Rice, but, and now they've lost Isaac Pacheco. So they're running with a white dude now. Case in Steel. I don't know what his name is. That ain't great. But, and meanwhile, I saw that drive from the Falcon. plus pretty good defense against the Eagles.
Starting point is 00:35:43 I think the Falcons are going to be a playoff team and I think people are going to be underrating them for quite some time. So I get three and a half on that. You think the Falcons? The half is important. Well, I didn't expect New Orleans. I did pick the Falcons in preseason to go to playoffs. I didn't see this coming out in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:36:00 So two weeks in, that would be my insecurity. But yeah, I still think, I still think the Falcons are in the playoffs. And as this gets better, Tampa's really good too You're right That's three teams in the south But if Cousins keeps settling in And you find Drake London
Starting point is 00:36:17 If you can figure out how to use Kyle Pitts And our boy Bijon That's pretty good And if they're playing defense Yeah Yeah I like the Falcons And the Bucks and the Saints
Starting point is 00:36:32 I'm gonna have to revisit playoff picks And see where the Who's out in the cold Maybe the Packers without Jordan Love It could be our Cowboys, which takes us to the next, to the final game in Willversy experts. Ravens, Cowboys, home in Dallas, Cowboys getting one and a half.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Ravens. I don't see a Harbaugh team starting. I mean, what's more likely, a McCarthy team team being one and two or Harbaugh being O and three? I mean, I think, no, absolutely not. So I almost did that. And you're just, you're going with the reversion to the mean theory,
Starting point is 00:37:07 like there's no way Lamar Jackson and Harbaar 0 and 3 and I get that maybe I'm trying to convince myself I'm going to take the Cowboys the one and a half doesn't help much God bless you man I'm scared here's what I think here's how I've talked myself into it okay so the Cowboys looked bad last week couldn't stop the run well that's scary you're getting ready to go up against Derek Henry who is a different kind of running back than Alan Kamara I'm not sure that means worse for the Cowboys' defense are better, but different. And then you got Lamar, and that's really scary. So what I hope that means, I don't know if you saw this, Shay, in week one, again,
Starting point is 00:37:48 one of our boys, Texas Longhorn, DeMarvie and Oversone played like 40 snaps. He played, and he was awesome. In week two, that dropped to eight snaps, linebacker. My suspicion is he's back in the game to spy Lamar Jackson. now I don't think overshone owns Lamar Jackson but I want him on the field I want him flying around and that gives me a little help that the little hope that the defense will be better and the Ravens and again you can say this doesn't something that's going to last they've given up a lot in the pass so maybe DAC can can navigate that defense and score some points I know it's
Starting point is 00:38:27 ridiculous but basically I'm doing this because of DeMarvie on overshone that's not ridiculous to me i mean i think he's and you remember him in texas he was always a freak athlete but you know and i was talking to a buddy mine about this he never really put it together like you expected him to with those abilities and i think a lot of that had to be you know not being old enough or whatnot but he needs to be able to let loose you got to let that kid fly around the football field because he will he will do damage and it's it's either him or mica to spy lamar and I'd rather have Micah, you know, on the line rushing the quarterback. I'm with you 100%.
Starting point is 00:39:05 He looked amazing against Cleveland. And then they just disappeared because they made him disappear. So you get, yeah, he was spying Deshaun Watson. So you get Micah chasing him, just wreaking havoc, flushing him out. And then that would normally terrify you with Lamar, but hopefully overshone's there to clean it up. I am still worried about, I'm still worried about Derek Henry just, I'm worried about our defensive of tackles and him just bludgeoning us for four quarters. I'm worried about that.
Starting point is 00:39:33 I think Maisie Smith or Massey or wherever the hell that Michigan Wolverine kid is called has been an utter disappointment. And I heard he went to the training room today. But he's, I don't like him at all. And I don't like our D-Line whatsoever. But with Henry, like I like him a lot less. I know. I know.
Starting point is 00:39:53 Still, I'm on the Cowboys. So we ended up with three picks separate from each other. All right, man, this has been awesome. It's good to see you and talk to you. I've never talked to you, but actually see you as well in person. If you guys want to check out Shea, it's the Shea and Irving podcast on the Dan Patrick Podcast Network, right?
