This is the first theater I've ever performed in where the last row of seats comes with supplemental oxygen. No, obviously we're here in Chicago because of the DNC.

It was an extraordinary night and extraordinarily long. Technically, technically, and correct me if I'm wrong, technically we've just rolled over into the first night of the 2028 campaign. The evening, very exciting, it started with some lesser-known Democrats. For instance, Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow came out with a big old book, either that or she's a teeny tiny lady. They should have provided a banana for scale. We also heard from Gina Raimondo, Commerce Secretary and star of the short-lived CBS series Everybody Loves Raimondo.

And of course this was followed by a cavalcade of America's most electrifying lieutenant governors. I'm a lieutenant gov head, what can I say? Lieutenant Governors. I'm a Lieutenant Govhead, what can I say? We also heard from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who wasted no time in making no sense. Hello, Democrats! Are you ready to elect Kamala Harris, the first president of the United States? Yes.

Yes, the first president of the United States. Now, it seems like that was a mistake, but it's like George Washington famously said, that little girl was me. Tim Walls here. Tim Walls didn't speak, right? He didn't speak. Tim Walls didn't speak right? He didn't speak. Tim Walls didn't speak tonight but he was interviewed on the sidelines at one point and his kids added a little something extra. It's a privilege. It's an honor and I can tell you this ticket, feeling that energy, just a privilege.

That's fun, little bunny ears behind dad's head. After that, they gave Chuck Schumer an atomic wedgie. Then we got an unscheduled speaker. Surprise, it's Kamala! Which one month ago became the Democrats' campaign slogan. Thanks, buddy. We got a great speech from Team USA coach and Chicago Bulls legend Steve Kerr, who has some history in the United Center. A lot of good stuff has happened in this building, especially in the 90s. You young people Google Michael Jordan and you can read all about it.

Google Michael Jordan, he thinks young people don't know who Michael Jordan is? What did it feel like the moment you heard that, Mike? It became personal with me. I can imagine. I can imagine it would. Kerr finished his speech with a zinger. After the results are tallied that night, we can, in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can tell Donald Trump, night night.

Thank you. Oh damn, that is a really good hit. That is a solid punch. That is a good hit, but Steve, we know if you really want to put Trump to sleep, just sit him in a courtroom. Then we heard from my first guest tonight, Secretary Hillary Clinton, who saluted... The secretary saluted Biden's legacy. He has been democracy's champion at home and abroad.

He brought dignity, decency, and confidence back to the White House. He also brought a soft-serve machine, if you say please he will let you do a swirl directly into your mouth. Clinton was confident about beating Donald Trump. We have him on the run now. He can run? What does that look like? What does that look like? Then Congressman Jamie Raskin took the mic and gave a little Chicago history lesson. We meet in this great city tonight

where Abraham Lincoln was nominated in 1860 to save the union and where Franklin D. Roosevelt was renominated by Democrats in 1940. And let's just skip over 1968. Who remembers who was doing what we also heard we also heard from firebrand Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett who listed some of Trump's stats. With 34 felonies, two impeachments and one porn star to prove it. That sounds like the saddest Christmas Carol ever. 34

He burned that house to the ground, going biblical on Trump.

I saw him holding the Bible and endorsing a Bible as if it needed his endorsement. He should try reading it. Of course, no, no, of course I've read it, Rafael. And I live by one inspiring passage, $59.99, $68 in Canada. Obviously, obviously this convention is being held to nominate Kamala Harris, but tonight was Biden appreciation night. Oh yes, it's Biden's night and the feelings gratitude for many years of service to our country, sir. The Biden tributes.

That's right. That's the feeling. That's the feeling. That's the feeling. That has gone. The Biden tribute started before primetime with delegates receiving a gift bag that included Cup of Joe coffee. A much nicer gift than when LBJ dropped out in 68 and gave those Chicago delegates a big bag of Johnsons. I call it jumbo. At last, at long last, it was time for Biden's speech. The president was greeted by a four and a half minute

standing ovation. After decades, that was lovely. But after decades of tireless public service, President Biden entered to a crowd of thousands of people chanting his name. If only he knew you could get the same thing by telling fart jokes on CBS. Biden stood on that stage. Biden stood on that stage, gave a powerful speech, and proved to the country and to the world that he can stay up past 8 p.m. Last one. Last one, I swear.

Biden saved up all the energy he did not use at that debate and uncorked it tonight. Just popped open a cap. Taking a victory lap for his accomplishments. Donald Trump promised infrastructure week, every week for four years, and he never built a damn thing. That's not entirely fair, sir. He did build all those little burger towers. Now, I'm sure he designed them, as he often does. Biden reminisced about his childhood in Scranton. My dad, you say there wasn't a whole hell

of a lot to drop down on my kitchen table at the end of the month. I come from a basic middle-class family. Three bedroom house, four kids, a grandpop living with us. All four of my grandparents sleeping in the same bed. Tell you. Now folks, our only hope is that I find a chocolate bar with a gold ticket inside.

No, when I did, no, I'm not joking, folks. When I did, I did. When I did, damn it. When I found that ticket, damn it, I went to those Oompa Loompas to make sure they could unionize. Now, because the night went long, James Taylor was cut from the program at the last minute. How could they cut sweet baby James? Or should I say, vengeful baby James? Oh, he will bring down the fire and the rain. But you know, ultimately I can understand

why they had to cut JT. I mean, it's not like he's the lieutenant governor of anything. You don't want to cut any of those people to get up on time. Biden closed his speech with what I believe is a fitting and moving lyric that summed up his entire political career. I can't sing worth a damn, so I'm not going to try.

I'll just quote it. The work and prayers of centuries have brought us to this day. What shall our legacy be? What will our children say? Let me know in my heart when my days are through, America, America, I gave my best to you. Thank you, Joe. Thank you. Overall, tonight this convention had joy, excitement, and a clear vision for the future. And even though I am exhausted, it's been an amazing week.

Well, yeah. I was born in Chicago. I was raised in Park Ridge. I graduated from Maine High School South after going to Maine East for a bunch of years and still have a huge number of friends still would never ever put ketchup on a hot dog I have all of my Chicago experiences you know okay just came from the first night of the DNC here in 24.

How did it feel to be back up on that stage, because it looked like it felt pretty good? It felt so good, because, I mean, the whole atmosphere was incredible. It was electrifying. I would say it's the second best audience in Chicago tonight. Well, wait a minute. I mean, technically, this is a very political answer. Technically, that was the best audience last night. Touché. Well done. last night. But this is by far the best audience today or anywhere, right?

And this theater, I mean, don't you want to like come here every month? I mean, this is just amazing. Look at this. Well, every time I'm in Chicago, every time in Chicago, I think, why did I ever leave? This is the greatest city in the world. It's such a great city. Such a great city.

Let's get back to the DNC. Let's get back to the DNC. The last time you stood before that crowd was in 2016, when you accepted the nomination. Here we are right there. There you are. Oh my gosh. We all remember well.

Back in the day. You made history. Yeah, yeah. Eight years later, eight years later, what sticks with you about that night? About the 2016 night. 2016 night, yeah. You know, in many ways, it was so overwhelming to be there,

to be on that stage, to accept that nomination. You know, I think back on it, and I just so overcome by, you know, the emotion of the moment, the meaning of it historically and could not have been, you know, more moved or more honored. But it was kind of a blur in a way because there was so much going on and we were getting geared up for the campaign. But it was the same feeling of hope and real optimism that we could continue the progress that had been made under President Obama over the prior eight years.

So it was just an overwhelming moment for me. Well tonight you gave a powerful speech. You gave a powerful speech. Tonight was very different. You gave a powerful speech tonight. And I'm curious, you touched on many things, but if there's one thing you want people to take from the speech tonight, what would it be? You know, I really know Kamala Harris's heart, her integrity.

I think she has the character, experience, and vision to be our president. And I hope the American people agree. I mean, that's really what my argument is. Well, tonight, tonight, President Biden gave a quite moving speech. Yes he did. And passed the torch selflessly and patriotically to Kamala Harris. You've seen a lot in politics.

You've been around the block, lady, and you've seen a lot of shocking things. Did this surprise even you, this turn of events over the last month? Yes and no. I mean... That's a very political answer. No, it was. Yeah, I kind of live in the world of yes and no. Because yes, it was shocking for any leader

to voluntarily give up power. But I thought that was one of the most selfless acts of patriotism I'd ever seen, that the President was ready and willing to do that. And you know, as you can see from the speech tonight, he got so much done. You know, I said in my speech that, you know, he returned decency and dignity and competence to the White House, and he got an enormous amount of, you know, legislation through the relationships with our allies around the world standing up to adversaries

like Putin and Russia. I mean, you look at his record, it was pretty remarkable. And it will go down in history as a great achievement. And for him to decide, okay, it's time for me to pass the torch and to let my vice president go forward, I was so touched by that. I've known the president a long time. I've served with him. I was a colleague of his in the Senate. I was secretary of state when he was

vice president in the Obama administration. And what he said, and I think you had this clip, Stephen, from the song that he and his family like so much. He really has given his best. He gave his best to his family under the most excruciating painful circumstances. He gave his best to the state of Delaware that he represented for so many years and he's given his best to our country. That may seem a little old-fashioned to some people. I think it is in the highest, you know, standard of service and leadership that our country has to offer and I'm so proud of him and leadership that our country has to offer.

And I'm so proud of him. And I thought tonight was a great moment. I agree. I think that and disagreeing with the Supreme Court over immunity is one of the most patriotic things he could have done. 100 percent. Now, you have a new book. Yes.

It's called Something Lost, Something Gained, where you write about moving past your dream of being president. And how does it feel now to see a woman who's not you reaching for that same dream? Well, you know, I thought a lot about what it would feel like. And I have to say, it feels really good. It felt exhilarating. It feels exhilarating, it feels exciting. You know, maybe because I've known Kamala and have a lot of confidence in her and what

she's capable of doing. I think I know how hard the job is and have concluded she is more than ready to take it on. But when the president decided to step aside and then quickly endorsed his vice president, my husband and I quickly endorsed her as well, because we thought it was the right thing to do. And we thought that she deserved it and she'd earned it. So look, it is something lost, something gained.

And, you know, I'll be back actually in this theater on October 13th to talk about the book. So I'm very much looking forward to that. We're live. So we've got to go here for a second. Is he mad at people who made jokes about the debate?

Selena Meyer yes that was based on my experience on the show Veep and I'm hoping that I can post a similar thing in November that says, Madam President is no longer a fictional character. I heard that since Biden dropped out, there has been a 350% spike in viewership of Veep. I know. How crazy. Which I think is a good thing. It's a great thing, I think.

People might need reminding that Selena Meyer and Kamala Harris are not alike. Well, let me explain to you. On Veep, I played a narcissistic, like megalomaniac sociopath. And that is not Kamala Harris. It might be another candidate in the race. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, a sleeper sofa. Veep used the harsh treatment of women in politics as a jumping-off part. Yes. For many of its brilliant moments. It certainly did. Is there a favorite scene that captured that aspect of Washington for you? Yes, there was a there was a moment on Veep in which the guy who played my, well he had many different roles on my staff, but at one point he was my press secretary Mike McClintock played by the brilliant Chicagoan Matt Walsh And he came to me with a speech and the speech began as a woman and I looked at him and I said first of all as A woman I'm not going to start a speech with as a woman because I can't identify as a woman.

As a woman, men hate that, and women who hate women hate that, which is most women. And so, yes, the show made a lot of fodder about... My favorite part about that line, it was the line you left out, which is like, I can't say as a woman, people can't know that. Oh, I forgot that. See, this is a thing.

Now, that's not the thing I love most about it. What I love most about it was what you did with the two, is that, tell them what you did. Well, I put them in a frame together. And what is this? What does this represent for you? This represents to me, and I say this with all respect, of course, to Secretary Clinton, but this represents to me Washington, D.C., and really it's kind of a little Veep moment, in fact. It's what we were satirizing very sort of extremely on Veep.

Mike McClintock would have written this for you. Yes, it probably would have been more botched. I mean, she obviously handled it very elegantly. I've, but anyway, there you go. Now you know a lot about DC. You grew up in DC. I did. And was your family politically active?

Yes, my, yes, politically active, very involved, voting was sort of a safe, is a sacred act and certainly was demonstrated to be that in our family. And my dad was a big supporter of Democrats, and he was actually put on Nixon's enemies list. Wow. Yes, he was. That is something to be proud of. Yes, not only am I proud of it, but it is framed in my office right next to this puppy right here.
