Starting point is 00:00:01 With World Radio News, I'm Kent Covington. A powerful winter storm is easing, but the impact is still being felt across much of the country. About half a million Americans remain without power, many of them in the south, where thick ice snapped trees and power lines. Crews are working in freezing conditions, and in some communities warn that it could take days or even more than a week to fully restore electricity. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves. Starting point is 00:00:28 Every time one of the utility companies and power companies gets, a large group back online, we have another tree fall or we have another limb fall. Ice has turned neighborhoods in Mississippi and other southern states into obstacle courses. Officials say at least 30 people were killed in storm-related incidents, including exposure to the cold and accidents on icy roads. Temperatures were expected to drop again overnight, even as many are still without heat. In Israel, a historic clock has stopped in Tel Aviv. World's Mary Muncie explains. Starting point is 00:01:16 was finally stopped and switched off. The clock was stopped at 843 days after the remains of the last hostage Ron Javili were returned yesterday. The recovery of Javili's remains paves the way to move forward with phase two of the ceasefire plan between Israel and the terror group Hamas. Meanwhile, trucks loaded with Palestinian aid were allowed through the Rafa crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip today, subject to Israeli inspection.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Israel has agreed to completely open the crossing, but the exact timing of that isn't yet known. For World, I'm Mary Muncie. In the Southern Philippines, the death toll has climbed to 28, after a passenger ferry carrying more than 350 people sank early Monday morning. Coast Guard officials say the ferry ran into technical trouble shortly after midnight and then suddenly tilted and took on water. Philippine Coast Guard, Chief Admiral Ronnie Gilgavan.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The Coast Guard has immediately acted on it as soon as it received, or we received the distress call from the Sea Marshal on board. Rescue crews saved more than 300 people, but Navy and Coast Guard ships, fishing boats and aircraft were still searching last night for many still missing. Officials say the ferry had been cleared to sail and there were no signs of overloading an investigation into the causes underway. For World Radio, I'm Kent Covington.
