At United Nations headquarters Monday, U.S. officials answered critics of the weekend U.S. operation in Venezuela that captured dictator Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Governments allied with Maduro's regime were among the loudest critics. China and even Russia piled on. Russian ambassador to the U.N. Vasily Nabenzia heard here through an interpreter. We firmly condemn the U.S. Act of Armed Aggression against Venezuela in breach of all international legal norms.
Starting point is 00:00:34 His remarks came even as Moscow continues its invasion of Ukraine, in which the U.N. estimates some 15,000 civilians have been killed. U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Michael Waltz fired back, saying Maduro is a criminal whose crimes against the United States will soon be laid bare in a court of law. He added that a U.N. panel of experts found that Maduro's supposed victory in 2024 was not legitimate and that more than 50 nations did not recognize him as a legitimate head of state. Secretary of State and Acting National Security Advisor Marco Rubio and Pentagon Chief Pete Higgsith last night briefed congressional leaders about the operation in Venezuela and where things now stand. Democrats were not impressed, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. This briefing, while very extensive and long, posed far more questions than it ever answered. He said what they were told of the administration's plans for Venezuela going forward was, quote, based on wishful thinking and unsatisfying. Republicans, though, had a different take, saying they came away well informed. A Paris court has convicted 10 people of cyberbullying France's first lady, Bridget McCrone.
Starting point is 00:02:02 World's Kristen Flavin has more. The defendants were found guilty of spreading false online claims about her gender, among other things. One defendant received a six-month prison sentence. Eight others were given suspended sentences of up to eight months. All were ordered to attend cyberbullying awareness training, and several were barred from using social media for six months. The court said the comments were decreed. braiding, insulting, and malicious.
