Republican Congressman Doug Lamalfa of California has died at age 65.
Lamarfa served seven terms representing Northern California's first district
and was a dependable vote for GOP leaders.
President Trump remarked today on his passing.
He was a fantastic person.
Man, that was the quick one.
I don't know.
I don't know quite yet what happened.
But, boy, it's a tough one.
He was just with us.
He was our friend, all of us, everyone.
Lomofa's death further trims the thin GOP advantage in the House.
Republicans now control 218 seats to Democrats 213.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries today called for a moment of silence in his honor.
LaMalfa was a former state lawmaker and rice farmer, known for frequent floor speeches and strong ties to his rural district.
California's governor will call a special election to fill the seat.
The president's comments came as he gathered with Republicans for a GOP retreat,
to strategize ahead of this year's midterm elections.
There he laid out what he called a roadmap to victory for GOP lawmakers,
calling on them to highlight successes from the past year.
Among them, he said, was the weekend operation in Venezuela
that captured dictator Nicolas Maruro.
But the United States proved once again that we have the most powerful,
most lethal, most sophisticated, and most fearsome.
It's a fearsome military on planet Earth, and it's not even close.
U.S. forces captured Maduro and his wife at a Venezuelan military base over the weekend.
They now face federal drug trafficking charges in the United States.
Secretary of State, an acting national security advisor, Marco Rubio, and Pentagon Chief Pete Hegzeth,
briefed congressional leaders last night about the operation in Venezuela and where things now stand.
Republicans in that meeting were satisfied with the information provided,
but Democrats were not impressed.
