With World Radio News, I'm Kristen Flavin.
A historic development in the Middle East.
Earlier today, civilian representatives of Israel and Lebanon met for direct talks for the first time in decades.
Meanwhile, Israel says it's preparing to reopen the long-closed Rafa crossing between Gaza and Egypt
as part of the terms of the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and the terror group Hamas.
For the time being, Israel says it will only be.
open one way to allow residents of Gaza to leave the war-torn area.
Israeli Prime Minister spokeswoman Sash Bedrosian.
The Prime Minister has made it clear that if people want to leave Gaza, they should and they
will be allowed to do so.
The crossing will be opened both ways when all of our hostages have been returned.
Israel says the bodies of two deceased hostages are still in Gaza.
Is extreme rhetoric fueling violence against law enforcement?
was the topic of discussion for a hearing earlier today held by the House Homeland Security Committee.
The hearing drew finger-pointing from both sides of the political aisle,
but Fraternal Order of Police National President Jordan Yose testified that this is not a time for partisanship.
In the past five years, they have been 620 officers shot in 483 separate ambush attacks,
killing 135 officers. These are not selective numbers. They are real, verified incidents.
These numbers have no bias. They have no agenda.
They are just real.
Both sides advocated for toning down the rhetoric in public discourse.
The hearing comes a week after two National Guard members were shot in Washington, D.C.
Positive news for the housing market.
World's Benj Iker reports.
Reeler.com released its 2026 housing forecast earlier today,
and it's showing a modest shift to a buyer's market.
According to the report, property prices are likely to dip in more than 20,000.
of the 100 largest U.S. cities.
Mortgage rates are expected to ease slightly as well.
Good news for renters as well.
Next year, rent is expected to decline slightly by 1%.
For World, I'm Benjamin Eicher.
And finally, in political news, Republican Matt Van Epps is speaking out
about his legislative priorities after his special election victory yesterday.
The Tennessee congressman-elect beat Democrat Afton Bain in the race for the volunteer
state's 7th Congressional District.
Epps victory means the GOP will keep its slim majority in the House of Representatives.
The race was widely seen as a litmus test to see if Democrats could mount a comeback in next
year's midterms.
