With World Radio News, I'm Mary Muncie.
At this point, it seems inevitable.
The Department of Homeland Security is expected to shut down at midnight tonight.
That's after Congress left Washington for a 10-day break without reaching an agreement to fund the government.
Democrats say they want reforms to U.S. immigration and customs enforcement in the wake of violence in Minnesota.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
From day one, I've said, unless there are really strong, meaningful reforms to rain in ice and stop the violence,
there will not be Democratic votes to fund ICE and extend the awful status quo that now exists.
But Republicans say Democrats are playing politics with America's safety.
Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem told reporters,
When you think about it, every other portion of the federal government has been funded except Homeland Security.
That's telling the rest of the world the Democrat Party doesn't think that.
that protecting America is safe.
People like TSA and FEMA employees could feel the shutdown within weeks,
but ICE will continue to be partially funded through other means.
In Ukraine, fire crews doused flames after yet another Russian strike on the port city of Odessa.
Authorities say one person died and six others were injured in that attack.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said today that a new round of talks between,
Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. are scheduled for next week. No word yet on the date or location.
Activists say the death toll from the Iranian government's crackdown on protesters may be much
larger than previously reported. World's Benjamin Iker has more.
The U.S.-based human rights activists news agency says it now estimates that the death toll
tops 7,000, and the group fears that number may still rise further.
The HRA News Agency relies on a network of activists in Iran to verify deaths.
That death toll has not been independently verified,
but that's a task made even tougher after Iran's government disrupted Internet access and communications.
The government offered its only death toll last month, claiming just over 3,000 were killed.

In Cape Canaver.
Ignition and lift off.
Go Falcon.
Four astronauts blasted toward the International Space Station this morning, aboard a SpaceX dragon capsule.
This crew replaces the astronauts who last month returned to Earth early in NASA's first medical evacuation.
