Starting point is 00:00:01 With World Radio News, I'm Kent Covington. In Geneva, plans are underway for a second round of U.S. brokered peace talks between Russia and Ukraine starting tomorrow. Expectations appear to be low for the summit with no signs of significant progress, and both sides sticking to their non-negotiable demands on key issues. Nevertheless, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters, We're the only nation on earth that apparently can get both sides to the table to talk. I'm not here to insult anybody, but the United Nations hasn't been able to do it. and there's no other country in Europe that's been able to do it.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the U.S. has set a June deadline for both sides to reach a ceasefire agreement. Secretary Rubio also says the United States has no reason to doubt a newly released report, finding that Russia poisoned the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Nolvone. Five European countries say he was poisoned with a rare toxin linked to poison dart frogs. The U.K., France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands say European lab tests confirm the presence of the toxin epibatatine in his body. The late Russian opposition leader and prominent critic of Vladimir Putin died in a Russian Arctic penal colony in 2024. Russia denied wrongdoing and claims he died naturally. The United States is sending about 200 troops to Nigeria to train soldiers fighting Islamic militants and other armed groups,

The Nigerian military says that so far, about 100 U.S. troops plus equipment have arrived in the country. The troops are there at the request of the Nigerian government to help with training, technical support, and intelligence sharing. The West African nation faces ongoing violence from groups including Boko Haram, ISIS, and other armed factions.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Data shows terrorists have particularly targeted Christians killing thousands last year. The U.S. troop deployment follows U.S. airstrikes in December on ISIS-affiliated militants in northwestern Nigeria. For World, I'm Mary Muncie.
