With World Radio News, I'm Kent Covington. A Florida man convicted of trying to assassinate President Trump has been sentenced to life in prison. U.S. District Judge Aline Cannon handed down the sentence today in Fort Pierce. Prosecutor said Ryan Ruth spent weeks planning the attack before aiming a rifle toward Trump as he played golf in September of 2024. Ruth received life without parole plus seven years on a gun charge. His attorney, Martin L. Roth, argued.

I think the judge may have mistakenly applied the federal crime of terrorism enhancement. And that will be probably the leading issue on appeal. I will be filing a notice of appeal in this case. A secret service agent spotted Ruth's rifle poking out of bushes and opened fire. Ruth then dropped his weapon and ran. The incident was the second attempted assassination of Trump in a span of roughly two months following a July shooting at a campaign event in Pennsylvania. The Trump administration says it's polling hundreds of immigration enforcement agents out of Minnesota, that after state and local officials agreed to cooperate by turning over arrested immigrants. Borders Tsar Tom Holman said fewer federal

agents are needed if local jails are notifying immigration and customs enforcement when inmates are eligible for deportation. As a result of the need for less law enforcement officers to do this work in a safer environment, I have announced effective immediately. We will draw down 700 people. Holman did not give a timeline for when that drawdown will be complete. He said a broader pullback depends on protesters no longer interfering with federal operations, including blocking roads or agents. The shift follows weeks of unrest in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area following a pair of fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents. The latest route of peace talks are underway today between Russia and Ukraine.

U.S. officials are leading those talks today and tomorrow in the United Arab Emirates. Secretary of State Marker Rubio said it is the first time and a long time that technical military teams from both sides are meeting with U.S. representatives, but he also tempered expectations. I would also caution everyone that on things like this, progress is probably not going to be known, even the elites, until we really have a breakthrough. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff and unofficial envoy Jared Kushner

are taking part in those talks. Iran's president has instructed the foreign minister to pursue negotiations with the United States. That announcement comes as President Trump has threatened military action if Iran does not negotiate an end to its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Talks are planned in Turkey later this week between U.S. envoy Steve Whitkoff and Iranian officials. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei appears to support the talks.
