Some college campuses of stepped-up security
after anti-Israeli pro-Palestinian demonstrations escalated in recent days,
Republican Senator Rick Scott.
We sit their kids off to school.
We expect them to be safe.
Expect them to learn something, build relationships.
We don't expect them to be worried about whether they're going to get beat up.
The University of California, Los Angeles,
canceled classes Wednesday after groups of protesters clashed the night before
shoving, kicking, and beating each other with sticks.
It came just hours after police in New York City
arrested almost 300 protesters
and forcibly removed dozens of students
who had barricaded themselves inside a campus building
at Columbia University.
Some of those students displayed pro-Hamas banners
and signs enchanted anti-Semitic slogans,
Senator Joni Ernst.
The universities need to put an end to this now.
Republicans are also ramping up pressure
on President Biden to speak out publicly
and decisively on the matter, White House press secretary, Corrine John Pierre, told reporters.
Hate speech should not be allowed. We should condemn that. That's what this administration has always
been consistent about and clear about. But GOP lawmakers say broad, generalized statements from the
press secretary are not enough. And Biden's Republican rival Donald Trump said Wednesday.
Every college president, I say, remove the encampments immediately,
vanquish the radicals and take back our campuses for all of the.
normal students who want a safe place from which to learn.
He also called out President Biden for what he said has been weak leadership on the matter.
Pro-life groups in New York are suing the state's attorney general Letitia James,
accusing her of carrying out an illegal witch hunt against pregnancy centers.
World's Mark Mellinger has more.
The lawsuit was filed by a group of pro-life pregnancy help organizations.
They say pro-life pregnancy centers received notice late last month.
that James plans to sue them for false advertising. James is demanding they stop sharing information
about how to reverse a chemical abortion once it's been initiated. But lawyers for the pro-life
groups say James' office has made persistent misleading statements about them and filed their own
preemptive lawsuits. For World, I'm Mark Mellinger.
Meantime, in Arizona, state lawmakers voted to overturn law protecting all children from abortion
except to save the life of the mother.
Two Republicans joined every Democrat in the state Senate in passing the repeal.
Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs says she will sign the measure into law.
After the repeal takes effect, Arizona will then only protect children from abortion starting at 15 weeks.
