Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. This is a CBC podcast. This is World Report. Good morning, I'm John Northcott. We begin with developing news out of Australia where police say they are treating a mass shooting as a terrorist attack. Video shows a man shooting over a wall at a crowd on the country's iconic Bondi beach.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Police say the attack was designed to target Sydney's Jewish community. Malinian is the commissioner of the New South Wales Police. It's obviously the fact that it's the first day of Hanukkah, the types of weapons, the offenders, some of the other items we found at the scene. As I said, we have found
Starting point is 00:01:16 an improvised explosive device in a car. Lanyan says at least 11 people were killed, 29 others taken to hospital. One of the gunmen also killed. Reporter Phil Mercer joins us from Sydney. So, Phil, what's the latest? Well, we've been hearing from senior Australian politicians, police officers, and members of the intelligence community.
Starting point is 00:01:37 The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is calling this incident a targeted attack on the Jewish community and says it was beyond anyone's worst nightmares. Now, the police say that two gunmen opened fire on people attending a Jewish festival. And officers warned that a third suspect could be at large, but insist that there is no ongoing threats. Now, we've seen a lot of video footage from the scene. One of those shows a bystander tackling one of the attackers, taking their gun and turning it back on them, forcing the shooter to retreat.
Starting point is 00:02:13 And that individual has been held a hero in Australia. The police also saying that 11 people have been killed in this mass shooting. One gunman has also died. another shooter is in custody, and the police say about 30 people are in hospital, some with very serious injuries. The early hours in this investigation, to be sure, Phil, as the shock of it all sets in, but what else are we hearing from officials? We did hear from the New South Wales State Premier, a man called Chris Minns.
Starting point is 00:02:48 He says that this was a horrific evil attack, and the police here in Eastern Australia have now declared this a terrorist incident. And intelligence bosses say that one of the suspects was known to the authorities, but he wasn't considered to be an immediate threat. We've also heard details of explosives being found in a car apparently owned by one of the suspects. And all this will do, it will deepen the trauma that Australia has suffered. Gun crime in this country is is extremely rare following the introduction of sweeping gun control laws after a mass shooting on the island state of Tasmania in 1996. Phil Mercer reporting from Sydney.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Thank you, Phil. Thank you. Israel is responding to the mass shooting on Bondi Beach. Officials are confirming one Israeli citizen is among the victims. We are today in a matter of anti-shaemity olamity. The way of each, I'll el-hame it. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called anti-Semitism a cancer that must be fought, noting he had urged Australia's Prime Minister to fight it months prior.
Starting point is 00:04:01 President Isaac Herzog sent condolences but also offered criticisms of the Australian government. We repeat our alert time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism, which is plaguing Australian society. Herzog is calling the incident, quote, a very cruel attack on Jews by vile terrorists. The attack follows a string of anti-Semitic incidents in Australia since October 2023. Canada, also among the countries condemning the attack.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is, quote, horrified by the anti-Semitic terror attack, adding that Canada stands with the people of Australia and Jewish people everywhere. Global Affairs, Canada says it is not aware of any Canadian citizens who have been affected but it stands by to help if needed. And in the U.S., Marco Rubio posted to social media,
Starting point is 00:04:55 Secretary of State also condemning the attack saying his prayers are with the victims, the Jewish community, and the people of Australia. Meanwhile, in the United States... We can confirm that there is a person of interest who has been detained. The mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, speaking to reporters this morning, that person of interest is in custody and connection
Starting point is 00:05:15 with the shooting at Brown University yesterday, No other details were released. The shooting, which happened during final exams, left two students dead and nine others injured. In Thailand. The military holds a memorial service as it returns the bodies of four soldiers to their families. They were killed fighting along the Cambodian border.
Starting point is 00:05:40 The violence marks the collapse of the ceasefire brokered by the Trump administration. Adam Bemma has the latest. Overnight gunfire along Thailand's southeastern border as fighting with Cambodia spreads to coastal areas. Thailand has expanded its curfew to include a southeastern province. Over the weekend, Thai forces say they've destroyed a bridge used by Cambodia to transport heavy weapons and other equipment. The military has also launched an operation targeting artillery in Cambodia's coastal Kokong province. Heavy fighting along the 800-kilometer border resumed last week.
Starting point is 00:06:18 The ongoing conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people in both countries. Thailand is not the aggressor. A Thai army spokesperson on Saturday assured the Thai people that it was not responsible for renewed violence. Fighting continues despite Friday's claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that he got both sides to stop. A White House statement issued Saturday says Trump expects them to honor past agreements. Adam Bemma for CBC News, Cheng Mai, Thailand.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Receding floodwater in BC's Fraser Valley, is allowing the city of Abbotsford to lift evacuation alerts for more than 1,000 properties. And while that's a relief to many, the region is bracing for another round of rain. Janella Hamilton has more on a community already washed out and worried about what the weather will bring. The water came, rose up, and flooded the whole farm there.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Rebecca Thurrow looks out what's left of a next waterlogged garden at Archway's urban farm in Abysford. The produce from this farm helping feed some of the city's most vulnerable. We're all kind of heartbroken. She says the floodwaters have drowned their plans to grow 2,500 servings of produce for the organization's food bank. And it's not the first time. They were also wiped out by BC's historic floods four years ago. The latest intense and persistent rains reactivating Abbotsford's disaster relief fund, a program Arrini Calipan says was created following the 2021 floods. And I got to meet with some of the families who had received Abbotsford disaster
Starting point is 00:07:56 relief money. And they said, you know what? Yours were the only funds we saw to help us rebuild. We didn't have any money from government. We didn't have insurance money. We do have cauliflower still growing here. I don't know how viable that is anymore. At the farm, staff continue to assess the damage. Waiting and hoping tonight's storm doesn't wash away the rest of the farm and with it, food security for the community. Janalla Hamilton, CBC News, Abbotsford.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Parents of students at a Montreal high school are calling on their province for more road safety. It follows a student being hit by a car at a dangerous intersection. Quabina O'Duro has the details. These kids need a way to get across those intersections safely. Joanna Dewey's petition is on Quebec's National Assembly website with more than 500 signatures. It calls on the government to implement crossing guards near high schools across the province.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I think a number of us parents just spent some time at this intersection to see what was going on in the morning and afternoon when the kids were crossing, and we realized just how dangerous it was. Their call to action comes after a 14-year-old student was hit by a car last year while walking to school. His classmate, Joelle Hart, says there are a lot of cars speeding during rush hour. And I feel it's a bit dangerous, and a crossing guard would definitely help. Last year, Montreal Public Health put out a report showing more than 430 minors were injured on Montreal worlds in 2022. Data from the city of Montreal suggests that between 2013 and 2022, nearly 40% of injured minors in collisions were hurt on a school day.
Starting point is 00:09:29 23% of those injuries occurred within a school zone. Montreal police are in charge of hiring and deploying crossing guards to schools on the island. Dewey says crossing guards are not typically assigned to high schools. just thought that was an oversight because just because kids are in high school doesn't necessarily mean that the crossing is safe. She says flashing stop signs and crosswalks have been added to her daughter's school and she is hoping
Starting point is 00:09:55 crossing guards are next. Kubino Ruro, CBC News, Montreal. And finally, an update on our lead story. We're getting reaction and condolences from King Charles, who of course is the king of Australia, the head of state there. My wife and I appalled and saddened by the most dreadful anti-Semitic terrorist attack on Jewish people attending the Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, adding that the light at the heart of the Hanukkah Festival will always triumph
Starting point is 00:10:20 over the darkness of such evil. That from King Charles to the people of Australia and the Jewish community. I'm John Northcott. This is CBC News.
