So lately, I've been really blown away by how locked in Canadians are to political news.
I'm Jamie Poisson, host of the daily news podcast Frontburner.
And while the election's over, that does not mean that people are done with politics.
Quite the opposite, really.
So if you're curious about how our country will navigate this divided and crucial moment
in our history, listen to Frontburner.
We've got you covered on that and a wide range of other top-of-mind stories as well.
Follow Frontburner wherever you get your podcasts.
This is a CBC Podcast.
This is World Report.
Good morning. I'm Arsia Young.
For the second night in a row, there has been more military posturing between India and Pakistan and tensions between the nuclear powers are
soaring across both countries. Flights have been diverted, airports have been
closed and in disputed Kashmir people are preparing for the worst and taking
shelter. Our South Asia correspondent Salima Shivji has more.
The day after India launched a string of missile strikes into neighboring Pakistan, tensions are high in the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, the divided region that both India
and Pakistan claim in full.
Islamabad is accusing India of a second military action and of trying to provoke Pakistan using
drones. Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary trying to provoke Pakistan using drones.
Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary speaks for the Pakistan Armed Forces.
India has undertaken yet another blatant military act of aggression against Pakistan.
India says it did target air defence systems in Pakistan,
but it accused that country of attempting its own drone attacks.
And New Delhi says this response has been measured and justified, spurred by the militant
attack last month that killed 26 men, mostly tourists.
India's Foreign Affairs Minister Subramaniam Jayashankar is again saying that his country
does not want the conflict to spiral.
However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will
be met with a very, very firm response.
Strong words of warning as heavy artillery fire is still being exchanged along the line
of control, the de facto border separating Kashmir.
More than a dozen people have been killed in the shelling, including a woman whose family
members sit in a circle grieving.
We want there to be a ceasefire fast. We're suffering, says this man,
as Kashmiris wait to see if leaders of the two countries
will listen to calls for de-escalation
and step back from the brink of war.

The UK and US have forged a trade deal.
This is now turning out, I think, really to be a great deal for both countries
because it'll be really great for the UK also.
US President Donald Trump announcing the agreement in an Oval Office news conference just moments ago.
Britain is the first country to strike a bilateral deal since Trump imposed his sweeping global tariffs last month.
Full details are yet to be released,
but it is expected the agreement will ease
some of the tariff burden imposed on the UK.
The deal includes billions of dollars
of increased market access for American exports,
especially in agriculture,
dramatically increasing access for American beef, ethanol,
and virtually all of the products produced by our great
farmers.
The White House says more than 80 other countries want to strike a deal.
Trump says that is a sign his tariff strategy is working and is good for the American economy.
No new pope has been elected yet today. The crowd in St. Peter's Square reacts to the latest result of the papal conclave.
Black smoke rises from the Sistine Chapel chimney, meaning the cardinals do not have a decision on Pope Francis' successor.
They held their second and third rounds of balloting this morning.
The cardinals are now on a break, but there will be a fourth and if needed a fifth vote later today. Big changes are coming to Yukon politics. Premier
Ranchpile announced he's stepping down. A political surprise for the territory. Chris
Windier has more on what that means for voters.
It is truly an honour, the greatest honour of my life. But my time in this role has come to an end.
Ranch Pallais ends his time as Premier the same way it began, without facing voters.
Pallais was acclaimed as leader of the Yukon Liberals in 2023.
He leaves ahead of a fixed election date set for November.
Pallais says he's simply not prepared to endure another election campaign.
You go into the fall and if you're forming government, how do you feel about the next
four years after that?
You can succeed in an election, but then you also have to have everything you need to continue
to do all that work.
The liberals finished the last election tied with the center-right Yukon party with eight
seats apiece.
That means Palay relied on support from the NDP to stay in power.
And with at least two other cabinet ministers saying they won't run again, either another term for the liberals is far from guaranteed.
NDP leader Kate White.
I appreciate and thank you, Ranj, for the work that you did.
But I think this resignation really shows that this election is a two-party race.
It's going to be between the UConn NDP and the UConn party.
UConn party leader Kerry Dixon declined to comment in a statement.
Dixon blamed Palay for rising crime, a buckling healthcare system and growing government debt.
He also wished Palay well in his future endeavors.
Chris Windier, CBC News, Whitehorse.
The UK is commemorating VE Day with a service of national remembrance and Thanksgiving.
That is some of the sound from Westminster Abbey.
The White Cliffs of Dover was a popular Second World War song.
Victory in Europe Day celebrates the formal acceptance of
the Allies of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender. Many members of
the royal family including the King and Queen are present for today's service.
Let us pray for peace in Europe and across the world in our time and for generations to come.
That is the great-great-grandson of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Ten-year-old Alexander Churchill recited a prayer.
This year marks 80 years since the end of the war in 1945.
A grieving mother in the UK is urging parents here in Canada to take
the threat of measles seriously. The number of cases continues to grow in
Ontario and Alberta and as Jennifer Yoon tells us the disease can be devastating.
Our family's been through hell. A parent's nightmare helplessly watching
your child dying in a hospital bed because of a measles infection.
Rebecca Archer says she didn't realize just how serious the virus can be.
The fact that it was measles, I just couldn't get my head around it.
10-year-old Renee was infected as an infant.
Too little to be vaccinated during an outbreak in Manchester, UK back in 2013.
She seemed to recover but the measles virus
stayed dormant in her brain for years.
When it finally attacked her nervous system,
she had seizures.
Couldn't talk, eat, even stay conscious.
Yeah, they told me that it was going to be fatal
and she'd have no brain activity.
Renee had a rare complication of measles called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.
Infectious disease specialist Michelle Barton worries a child in Canada will die of that
or of any other complications like pneumonia as measles rips through unvaccinated children
in parts of Ontario and Alberta, putting those who are immunocompromised or too young for the jab at risk.
We would normally think about it in a developed world setting where measles had been eradicated.
Rebecca is begging parents to get vaccinated.
She says her child would still be alive if others were immunized against measles.
That injection could save your child's life.
Like it could of with my child.
She's hoping others understand the stakes.

A game that's popular with high school students
has police in Canada warning it's dangerous.
Senior assassin involves tracking down players
and shooting them with water, gelowl or foam dart guns.
Police say the fun becomes unsafe when the toys are mistaken for real guns.
It's supposed to be all fun and games.
Teens ambushing their classmates in malls, parks and restaurants with toy guns.
But police across the country in cities from Winnipeg to Sudbury are
warning. Replica firearms look an awful lot like real firearms. Constable James
Dixon is with York Regional Police just north of Toronto. The service has
recently received numerous reports of young people carrying what appear to be
guns and Dixon says that kind of misunderstanding can lead to serious trouble.
Whether it's a police involved shooting, whether there's criminal charges of either assault
with a weapon, whether there's mischief to property, there's a lot of different things
that can come out of here that we're very concerned about.
Last year in Kansas, a teen was paralyzed when the father of a target shot him.
In February, an 18-year-old in Florida was shot by an off duty police officer who mistook his
water gun for a real one in the dark across the country.
There have been tragedies and near tragedies that have occurred.
Florida state attorney Melissa Nelson told reporters earlier this year,
the game has also led to traffic collisions and school evacuations.
It might seem like a game and certainly it seems fun to young kids but the consequences could be deadly.
Police are urging teens to make sure their toy guns look nothing like the real thing
or better yet, forego the game altogether.
