This is World Report. Good morning. I'm John Northcott. We begin with tragedy in Toronto
on this holiday long weekend.
Three children are dead after the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a suspected
drunk driver.
It happened early this morning near Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
The CBC's Mark Carcassol joins us in studio with more.
Mark, what can you tell us?
Well, if you look at the footage of this crash, John, it is really difficult to look at.
This was a high impact, serious, devastating crash.
Toronto police say it happened just after 1230 a.m., just off Highway 401 in the west
end of Toronto, near Pearson International Airport.
Police alleged that someone in a Dodge caravan, minivan, came speeding up one of the off-ramps
there onto a main road where there was another vehicle waiting at a red light. They say that speed was a factor, control
was lost in the vehicle and the Dodge Caravan went head-first, head-on into
another vehicle carrying four children and two adults and here is the
devastating impacts from Toronto Police.
Unfortunately, on scene, two other children children, 15-year-old and a 13-year-old, was pronounced
deceased on scene.
The third child was transported to a nearby trauma centre and pronounced deceased at the
hospital.
That third child said by police to be a six-year-old girl.
Also, another child, 10 years old, as well as two adults, were taken to hospital.
The woman is said to be related
to the children. The other adult is said to be a family friend. Obviously, this family
is absolutely devastated. Now, those who survived will have to live the rest of their lives
picking up the pieces. But this is a story that has already gripped the city of Toronto
and the surrounding region because it's just so devastating at the scene police arrested a nineteen
year-old man named ethan lehulya
of georgetown he faces
multiple draw charges including three counts of impaired operation of a
vehicle causing death
three counts of dangerous driving causing death he was scheduled to make
an appearance in bail court

Thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to witness the inaugural
mass of Pope Leo XIV. The elaborate ceremony marks the official start of his
papacy.
Megan Williams reports from the Vatican.
A delighted crowd shouted, Long live the Pope as Leo XIV riding in an open
Pope-mobile waved to thousands ahead of the mass that formally launched his papacy.
The world badly needs hope, says Trish Stiles from Ireland, saying a US-born Pope is actually
a message to the world, I'll turn it a few points in the sticks. To President Trump.
Peruvian Gustavo Crispi says he hopes Pope Leo, a fellow Peruvian citizen, will bring
justice to a country suffering state repression and threats to indigenous rights.
During the ceremony, Leo received a strip of lambwool known as a pallium to symbolize his role as shepherd to the Catholic flock and
a gold cast fisherman's ring a reference to the Apostle st. Peter
The new Pope spoke out against an economic paradigm that exploits the earth's resources and
marginalizes the poorest. Watching the mass from the front rows
with fellow dignitaries was Prime Minister Carney, a devout Catholic who
wrote a book inspired by Pope Francis whom he met in 2014. Yesterday Carney met
with Ukraine President Zelensky as well as Italy's Premier and President. Today
he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz ahead of the G7 in Alberta next month.
Megan Williams, CBC News, The Vatican.
After the papal mass, the Prime Minister spoke to reporters in Rome this morning.
He was asked to clarify why his government stated it was not going to table a budget this fall.
He now says there will be a budget, but not immediately.
There will be a budget in the fall, in the short term.
It's a very short parliamentary session that is coming up.
The speech from the throne is on the 27th, as people know.
The House is due to rise under the House's rules by the 20th of June, so it's really three weeks.
We have some very clear priorities which as you know would include
The federal government taking all the steps it can to help create one Canadian economy out of 13 in addition
Initiatives such as the middle-class tax cut but there will be a budget in the fall
Carney went on to say that he will be meeting today with US Vice President JD Vance.
More than 100 people are dead in overnight Israeli attacks across Gaza.
Hospital officials say dozens of those deaths happened as airstrikes hit houses and tents
sheltering displaced people.
The intensified attacks come as indirect talks resume in Qatar between Hamas and Israel.
Anna Cunningham has more.
This was supposed to be a so-called safe zone, a tented area in Al Mawassi near the southern
city of Khan Yunis, used by families already displaced in this war. Smoke still smoldering
from the airstrike, destroyed belongings scattered everywhere. I wasn't here, says Wada Al-Shahir.
All my family is gone, she says,
standing amid the twisted burned remains of cars,
a motorbike and bags of children's clothes.
Gaza's health authority says 464 people have been killed
this past week in Israeli strikes.
It claims amongst the dead were children.
The Israel Defense Forces say its operations this weekend have, in their words, eliminated
dozens of terrorists and they claim dismantled significant terrorist infrastructure, as well
as locating Hamas tunnels and explosives.
Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel have resumed in Doha, Qatar.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office in a statement Sunday says those discussions
now include ending the war, as well as a truce and a hostage deal proposal. But it says ending
the war must include the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip, as well as the exile of
Hamas militants. In Tel Aviv Saturday, thousands of Israelis protested calling for an end to the war.
Israel has previously said if there is no deal with Hamas,
it will continue escalating its military campaign on the ground in Gaza.

An historic Mexican Navy sailing ship veered into and struck the Brooklyn Bridge last night.
Two crew members were killed after the collision smashed the masts.
At least 19 people needed medical treatment.
Two hundred and seventy-seven were on board at the time. Officials say they believe the
training vessel lost power shortly before striking the bridge. The ship was on a global goodwill
tour as part of the international tall ship program. It was headed to Iceland at the time of the collision.
Firefighters near Kyiv raced to put out the flames, tearing through a large building.
Ukrainian officials say at least one person is dead, three others wounded.
This after Russia launched its largest drone attack since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
273 drones launched towards the Kyiv region, 88 were intercepted.
US President Donald Trump is set to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin via
phone today as the US pushes for a peace deal.
A remote community in the far north of Quebec is declaring a state of emergency this morning.
It's struggling with a major water crisis.
The village has had to truck in water after a critical pipeline froze in March.
Samuel Watt reports the situation now threatening the community's health.
Many residents in the northern Quebec village of Paverne-Tuc have been going days, even
weeks without water delivery.
And Nunavut's acting public health director, Dr. Yassin Chalikov, says the situation has
gotten acutely worse in recent days.
Now they're evacuating patients south to places like Montreal for care.
A hospital or any advanced health care institution can't operate without running water for a
prolonged period of time.
The community has been facing a serious water supply problem after a critical pipe connecting
the pump station to the treatment plant froze mid-March, so trucks have to go
further out of town to collect water, slowing delivery.
And slushy, snow-clogged roads are hampering those efforts.
There's water everywhere, it's like a river.
Brooke Sivarara-Pick says the lack of water and sewage collection is stinking up homes
in the village of 2100 people.
I had to like pick up snow to melt for the toilets.
The village is also fighting a rise in gastroenteritis and prevention of that
often relies on water. The Quebec government is sending planes loaded with bottled water
to the community. Ian Lafreniere is the minister responsible for relations with Thurst nations and
Inuit.
All the equipment, all the personnel needed are on standby now, we're there to help.
Work has started on a temporary replacement pipe, but that won't be ready until June
due to the pile-up of snow and sub-zero temperatures.
