Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and we're getting ready for a total lunar eclipse.
On the night of March 13th, our moon will pass from full sunlight into the Earth's shadow.
The moon's disc will be transformed from bright yellow to dark sunset red,
illuminated during totality with only remnants of sunlight filtered through thick layers of the Earth's atmosphere.
As the moon darkens, watch stars brighten, including red Arcturists to its left and bright regular.
to its right. Mars and Jupiter will shine brightly in the west. This total lunar eclipse will be visible across North America, and unlike a solar eclipse is best seen with the unaided eye or binoculars. The moon will move into peripheral shadows at 1157 p.m. Eastern daylight time.
Totality begins at 2.26 a.m. and ends at 3.31 a.m. The moon then exits Earth's shadow at 6 a.m. That's your Astro Minute.
