Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds out of time. I'm Lauren Smith, and today we're admiring beautiful Cassiopeia. Queen Cassiopeia is one of the most beloved and recognizable constellations in the northern night sky, with her distinctive W-shaped asterism. Lying along the band of our Milky Way galaxy, her richly adorned gown includes star clusters, stellar nurseries, glowing supernova remnants, newly discovered exoplanets, and at least one black hole. She hosts one of only a few supernova ever witnessed by humans, which exploded in 1572 and was bright enough to be seen by day.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Her equally lavish surroundings include the double cluster and nearby Andromeda Galaxy, both faint but seeable with the naked eye. You'll find Cassiopeia in the north, closely circling the pole star Polaris, invisible most of the year. Use binoculars to see more of the objects in this magnificent constellation. That's your Astro Minute. Thank you.
