You're listening to Chargers baseball.
Currently count as two balls, one strike.
Thanks, Sam.
Now, count moves to two and two.
I'm Jack Sullivan.
My partner is Sam Wallace.
It's a beautiful day for a ball game today.
High fly ball out to left field.
Oh, Santa Maria.
A homer to start the game.
That's not really the way you want to start off a ball game.
You know, you're digging yourself through an early hole here.
you know sets the tone early you want to you want to start climbing out of that as soon as possible
this pitcher's got to lock in and so the lakers take a one-nothing lead no outs here in the first
pitcher comes set the delivery strike one yeah just nick the outside of the plate there that's a
nice pitch strike two oh and two overcast skies here today here in hillsdale michigan
A little wind
Coming towards right field
You see you went back to the same pitch
Twice in a row
Looking for him to mix it up here
Maybe something off speed
Set up outside a little high
One and two
One ball two strikes
Still one one nothing GBSU
That one's way outside
Count moves two and two
Trying to bait him with something
I think that one got away from him a little
Would you say
A little slipped out of his hand
Yeah
The delivery
Hard ground ball
That's going to be a base hit out into right field, just scooted right past that second baseman.
No outs.
Bad back number 14, Ryan Dykstra.
Man on first.
Batter takes strike one.
He's already given up two hits.
And no outs.
He's going to start locking in.
Substantial lead over there on first.
Oh, nice pick-off attempt.
Didn't get there, but you've got to scare him once in a while.
Let him know who's boss.
The batter is right.
Ryan Dykstra.
Outfielder.
Still no outs in the inning.
Pitcher comes set, the delivery.
Strike, catching the outside part of the plate.
He keeps going back to that outside part of the plate.
I wonder if he's a little antsy throwing one inside again.
Tries a pickoff move, and he will safely scamper back to the bag.
Still 0-2 here, no outs.
Top of the first.
You see those pickoffs haven't really intimidated him all that much.
He's still taking a nice.
lead. Shuffling
over to first. Brings him up on
strike three here, one out
the inning. That's a nice way to get
back into this ball game. You know, you got to set
the tone, let your fielders know,
you haven't gone anywhere.
Probably looking for something on the ground
here, get two, get out of this inning
with minimal damage.
Third pickoff attempt.
Oh, runner just stole.
second the throw is just late so if you're just tuning in now charger baseball 101.7 radio
free hillsdale top of the first one man has already crossed home plate man on second one out
one and oh count to the four hole hitter Jonas gobranson the delivery over his head gets away from
the catcher runner goes to third that's another man on third another free base another free
base he can't be giving that up um that's right sam man on third one out in the inning still
looked like he was i can't tell if that one got away from him or he was trying to set a tone there
you know their cleanup hitter he's he's in these spots for a reason he's been given pretty much
about what you can expect you know one run across already a little high there so three and oh sam
here um do you think this is uh intentionally possibly pitching around him with with first and
second base open or is this just a little wild to get the game started?
Well, you know, he gave up two base hits early on.
It might be a little rattled up, especially with two stolen bases, two free ones.
You know, he might be in his own head a little bit.
But that was a nice one.
It's now two and two.
Oh, they changed one back.
Still two and two.
And a foul ball.
Two and two.
One out, man on third, top of the first.
One man already across the plate here.
Pitcher comes set.
The delivery, two and two.
High fly ball out to right field, camping under it.
Runner tags.
The throw home.
Runner will be safe at home.
Two outs.
The second man does cross the plate here.
Two-nothing.
Lakers take a quick two-nothing lead.
Productive out there for Gold Branson.
You know, he can't be too upset about that.
It's two-nothing early on.
This pitcher's got to lock in.
He's probably looking for another quick out.
Get back in the bullpen.
And we have the fifth hitter, number six.
Nathan Logan.
First pitch is outside and high, so we got 1-0, two outs.
Still the top of the first.
The delivery, well outside.
So we've got a 2-0 count here.
Sam, what have been your thoughts so far?
I think he's really got to lock in, get his accuracy well.
I don't know if there's something wrong.
with his mechanics right now but he's got a he's got to do some work in the bullpen not in the
bullpen but in the dugout in between innings he's got to you got to clean up that delivery he's just
looking a little rusty now he'll still is not going with the traditional starter here they're going
with more of an opening strategy we've heard they're probably going to use a couple pitchers for
maybe two or three innings a piece rather than have one try to go deep so maybe he's a little out of
his element here he's not used to pitching in the beginning
That's right, and I hear from possibly both teams that we could see quite a few pitchers today.
So we'll see what happens as the day goes on.
Two-nothing Lakers, three and two, two outs.
The delivery outside ball four.
And so a man goes to first base and up walks.
Number 28, Brendan Grouchardo.
See, to me, that's just another missed opportunity.
He had two strikes on the guy.
Two and two.
It's a very favorable count.
He had him right where he wanted him.
And he just lost control again.
It was a golden opportunity.
So here we've got the O-1.
Pitcher comes set.
The delivery here.
And Ketri does a good job of keeping that in front of him,
but the runner will take second nonetheless.
Yeah, that could have been a lot worse.
He did a really good job of stretching his legs,
keeping it in front of him.
That ball could have gone to the backstop.
Might have been two bases.
You never know what happens with those.
They're very wild.
But great job by the catcher there.
Pitcher comes set.
Man on second, heavy lead.
And a little high.
So now it'll go two and one.
Definitely paying some attention to that runner on second,
taking a healthy lead.
He's not holding him to the bag too much.
I don't think they're all that worried about him moving.
But with that lead, he looks ready to run.
I think he's waiting for another drop ball.
Pitcher delivery.
ground ball and it's just foul
if you're just tuning in with us you're listening to
Charger baseball on Hillsdale 101.7 FM
Krisby Day here in Hillsdale
Michigan, a little bit of breeze, overcast
Yeah you know I'm very thankful to be inside
I would not want to be out there
It's very cold today that's going to be a struggle
for a lot of these players as we get deeper into this game
You know those digits are start to get stiff with the cold
I've got to do their best to keep warm between innings
on the field.
Absolutely.
And a high fly ball out of play there.
So count is at two and two, two outs, man on second.
Two runs have crossed the plate here already in this top of the first inning.
The delivery here.
Ooh, he wonked him.
It is a foul ball.
He threw it behind his back.
Did it hit the knob?
It hit Richardo's barrel behind his back.
So count remains at two and two.
pitcher in the stretch.
It's a bit of a gift for Hillsdale here.
Absolutely.
It could have been a lot worse.
It could have been two men back on.
Absolutely.
You don't see that a whole lot.
Nice pitch.
Wow.
A good pitch there, maybe just a little outside.
Yeah.
Catcher did a great job of framing it there.
I think he almost convinced the hump.
But regardless, full count, two outs.
Runner's going to be in motion here.
And here we are.
the payoff delivery here and a foul ball so still the count will remain full three two two outs to
one man on second two runners have crossed the plate lakers off to an early lead pitcher comes set
here's the delivery and ball four and so we've got men on first and second with two outs in
the top of the first still a little bit more work to be done for the chargers here to get out of
this half inning.
Yeah, another, another bare miss, another mess.
And the Chargers will come together to have a talk.
And so we're going to go to break and you're listening to Chargers baseball on Radio
Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Don't go anywhere.
Welcome to the Grammar Minute where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith and here are some words you may have been using that don't exist.
Runner-ups should be runners-up.
A lot is never one word unless you're talking about, say, allotting a piece of property.
A lot is two words.
Participator is...
No, it should be participant.
Mischievous should be mischievous with three syllables instead of four.
Thusly might be a favorite of college students writing papers, but it's not a word either.
Just say thus.
English is in ever-evolving language, and things change over time.
Just pick up a copy of Chaucer if you aren't sure how much they've changed.
When in doubt about whether a commonly used word is acceptable, consult a dictionary.
This can also help you judge whether the word is formal enough to be used in print.
That's your Grammar Minute. Visit thegrammerminit.com for more tips and tricks.
And welcome back to Hillsdale Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7.
If you're just tuning in, I'm Jack Sullivan, my partner, Sam Wallace.
Top of the first inning.
The count is one in one.
with two outs men on first and second two men have already crossed the plate a two o lead for the
grand valley state lakers the delivery and that's going to be a little inside so the count moves to two
and one like i said men on first and second chargers mostly directing their attention to the batter
the task at hand and here we are pitcher comes set here's the delivery ground ball left side foul
Good play by the third base coach, huh Sam?
I saw that. That was quick hands.
Beautiful. Maybe he should be out there.
So a new ball in play now.
Pitcher on the rubber in the stretch.
Healthy leads by both men on first and second.
The delivery here, 2-2.
A grounder to the third baseman come running in a throw in safe.
We've got bases loaded here.
Bases loaded, two outs.
And here comes.
You know, that's just a really tough play.
the third baseman.
He did just about everything he could.
You saw those quick feet.
He got a great jump on that ball, but at the end of the day,
just full swing bunt.
Not much you can do with those.
That runner is quick.
Absolutely.
And here we've got number 12, Jake Ridequist, stepping in for the Lakers.
Base is loaded.
Two outs.
Here comes the O-O-O-Dilvery and brings it in for strike one.
As you said, got bases loaded here.
Chargers trying to get out of this half-inning
so they can go to work on the other side of the plate.
And we've got strike two.
O and two here, folks.
One pitch away from preventing further damage here in the top of the first.
You know, this is probably the best spot.
He's been in, O2, two outs.
And here comes the delivery.
A little outside.
And so Cal is going to move one and two.
Still doing fine, though, Sam.
Still doing fine.
He's really looking for that third strike here.
Limit the damage.
Two runs is very, very much overcomable.
And here come.
He can get over that.
One-two delivery.
A little outside.
Thought he might have caught the outside part of the plate, but it's going to move to two and two.
Yeah, real tempting pitch.
He was trying to induce a swing, maybe get a swing and a miss or a ground ball, something manageable.
Absolutely.
And right now with the base is loaded and two out, you're focused on the man at the dish.
Here's the two-two delivery.
Strike three.
A foul tip into the catcher's mitt, and the chargers get out of the inning with no further damage.
So here we go. Chargers can go to work in the bottom of the first.
And we're going to take another break here.
You're listening to Chargers Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Don't go anywhere, folks.
Welcome to the old ballgame where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen.
Today we talk about the origin of baseball's favorite concession food, hot dogs.
At early ballgames, there were no official concession stands.
But local people would sell food to fans who tended to eat things you would eat without utensils.
And at the beginning of the 20th century, German immigrants began to help shape the culture,
and people began to love their dachshundas, which were served with a milk roll in sauerkraut.
In the 1860s, Chris von der Ahee, a German immigrant and owner of the St. Louis Browns,
introduced the hot dog to baseball fans.
At first, they were served without buns, and instead, customers would keep the white gloves
that the hot sausages were served on.
However, the gloves were eventually not being returned, and this frustrated the company.
Somewhere along the line the split bun was introduced, and it fit just like a glove.
and now countless hot dogs are eaten every ballgame.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
And welcome back, folks, to Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium here in Hillsdale, Michigan.
You're listening to Chargers baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7.
The Grand Valley State Lakers got us started in the top of the first with a couple runs, left three on, though.
And so Hillsdale was able to get out of a bit of a jam, and we'll go to work here.
in the bottom half of this first inning, hoping to recoup some of their losses.
Rock O'Sinood is going to take the mound for the Grand Valley State Lakers.
He's looking to get out of here quickly, get his boys back in the dugout, do some more damage.
Sully, what do you have to say about that?
What do you think Hillsill's got to do here?
You know, I think one thing you're looking to do is definitely answer back with some runs of their own,
given the somewhat unsettling, maybe unnerving start for the Chargers,
still going to be fine if they can just lock in,
respond with a few runs of their own,
and lock down on defense going forward.
Agreed. Well, stepping up to bat first for the charges,
we have Rocco Tanuta out of Bartlett, Illinois.
The pitch, a little bit inside, ball one.
Taking a few practice swings there.
If you're just tuning in, it's two nothing Lakers.
A lead off home run, put them up early.
A couple of base hits were strung together later.
A couple of stolen bases.
They got another one across, but the chargers managed to strand three in that inning.
Count is one and one.
Hey, we're seeing a little sunshine here.
Do you think that might affect the game a little bit?
Absolutely.
You never know how that's going to affect how people see the ball.
Anything like that.
I tell you what, Sam.
I'm impressed with the Grand Valley State offense to...
And strike three, he swung and missed.
Noble effort there by Rocco, but fortunately couldn't quite make contact.
Playing careless whisper here in the baseball stadium.
I don't know if that's right.
Jacob Salee out of Otago, Michigan, catcher.
Batting second for the Chargers.
The set, the pitch.
Nice pitch, got in there.
Strike one.
O' and one to him, one out.
Another quick pitch.
That one's going to be a little high, so it's ball one.
Look like a curb bow with a good bit of movement there, Sam.
Yeah, so nice bite on that one.
We're going to be keeping an eye out for that.
The pitch.
Swing and a drive.
Right center.
He sets.
Oh, and he fumbled it.
He dropped it, and he's going to be safely standing into second.
Nice break for the chargers there.
I tell you what, Sam, when that came off the bat,
I wasn't sure what was going to happen.
I wasn't sure if that was going to hit the wall.
If he was going to get there.
But luckily, that worked out well for the Chargers here.
We got a man on second with only one away.
Hopefully they can get that man home.
Yeah, I think this is exactly the kickstart they're looking for.
You know, that was a drive.
Tough play, honestly.
I mean, it was down to the warning track.
He was in full motion trying to catch it over his shoulder.
They credited him with an error.
So still no hits for the Chargers.
But regardless, they have a man on second.
I think they'll take that any day.
Will Shannon up to the plate
As the first pitch is outside
And in the dirt, ball one
With a man on second, one out
Two nothing Lakers
Fall in the error
Shannon waits
The one old pitch
And that pitch is another ball outside
For ball two
Will Shannon
Out of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Playing first base
A junior, I believe
I believe he is a junior
He was a big guy, big strong man
looking for him to muscle one into the outfield
get that man on second home
the pitch
he watches it into the glove
and it's 3 and 0
maybe trying to brush him back a little bit there sam
yeah you know look at those forearms
I'd be afraid of those
probably trying not to give in that
and think he can get leverage on
the pitch
and that one's going to come in there
not a bad idea to take one there
with the count at 3 and 0
conservative lead there out at 2
Yeah, he's not leading off too much.
I don't think he doesn't need to, though.
Pitch, swing and a miss.
Healthy cut.
I think he was swinging for the fences.
He was trying to tie this game with one swing there,
but the ball bit away from him just a little too much.
It's now a full count, one out, two nothing Lakers.
And he steps back into the box.
The pitch, and he fouled it straight back.
Whoa, give that fan of contract.
Nice catch out there.
New ball in play. He's taking his time out on the mound a little bit, checking his playbook.
Here's the payoff pitch.
Swing, that one's going to, does not find some grass.
And unfortunately, it wasn't deep enough for the runner to move up to third.
So great swing, you know, putting the ball in play is half the battle sometimes.
I tell you what, Sam, that was just a bit unlucky there.
I mean, he crushed a liner there, but unfortunately just right.
right to the right field. There's not much you can do about that. That could have been in the gap
for a couple extra bases. Could have got a little more under that. Could have been over.
I think they had the shift on really well. Now the lefty, Jeff Landis from Midland, Michigan.
Second baseman playing deep in the grass.
Yeah. It's a big gap up the middle.
Looks like they're looking for him to pull it, but unfortunately the shortstop can't leave second too far.
One ball, no strikes. Two outs here in the.
bottom of the first the pitch and it's in there for strike one one ball one strike
pitchers seem to be doing a good job staying ahead in the counter at least not falling too
far behind what do you think sam yeah i mean he gave up that one three nothing uh three nothing
three nothing lead early on but another pitch comes and it's ball two two and one
jeff's really looking to poke one through that gap there's a big gap if he can pull it just right
i think that's into the into the outfield grass at least moves that runner to third
Center fielders playing pretty deep.
Fowl ball off to the left side.
It's now two and two.
And that'll crash into the Bierman Athletic Center.
Hopefully he didn't break a window.
That's coming out of his scholarship if he did.
That's right, Sam.
Landis sets in the box.
The pitch.
Oh, swings and a miss.
He went chasing on that one.
It was a little too high.
So the Lakers.
get out of it, relatively unscathed.
You're listening to Chargers baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Don't go anywhere, folks.
You're listening to What's in a Name.
Though this particular Michigan City's name at first look has a fairly simple origin story,
it's a bit more complicated than at first seems.
The name Detroit comes from a French word that means straight like a body of water,
which in turn comes from the city's positioning around the Detroit River.
The river comes from Lake Erie, one of the five great lakes.
The city still remains as one of the oldest and most important cities in the Midwest.
Though the name comes from French settlements in the early 18th century, which was roughly 300 years ago,
the land itself has been populated for over 11,000 years by many different peoples,
including the Iroquois and the Huron.
Rich in resources, it was highly contested, and after many battles ultimately ended up within the United States,
first as a territory and then as part of the state of Michigan.
It has since earned the nickname of the Motor City due to its history with Henry Ford.
This has been what's in a name.
My name is Megan Pitcock, and you're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome back, folks. You're listening to Chargers Baseball.
Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
It's clearing up today.
The overcast skies are finally breaking.
The sunshine is peeping its beautiful face into the stadium.
As a new pitcher takes them out for the Chargers.
Colin Enders up in Traverse City, Michigan, number 10.
That's right, Sam.
And as we said at the start of the broadcast, we're going to see a little bit of,
or quite a few pitchers, I should say, for the chargers.
They're going with more of a staff day today, given a few guys' turns on the bump.
Yeah, the first pitcher in there, he got a little rattled up the first inning,
gave up two runs, three hits.
It wasn't spectacular, but he did a great job of limiting the damage at the end.
He left the bases loaded and got out of there.
That's right. And here we got Zach Warren leading off the top half of the second inning.
Endris comes set, the delivery. And we got ball one, one and O.
Thus far, we've seen Hillsdale fall behind in the count a little bit to start the game.
It's 2-0-Grandalley State Lakers. The 1-0 delivery.
And ball 2 looks like that was a little low.
The right-hander, Colin Endress.
2-0 comes set in the stretch.
The delivery.
Ground ball, hard hit, up the middle, into center field.
Lead off single for the Lakers.
You know, the shortstop did a really good job laying out.
Fortunately, it's just a little bit out of his range.
Nothing they can't overcome.
And here we are, Sam.
So we've got a man on first with no outs.
Hillsdale hoping to get a man out here soon
as to not give up any more runs this half of the inning.
Exactly.
That was a long first half of the end.
the first inning.
They're looking to get out of here real quickly.
Here we are.
Here we are.
The batter leadoff hitter, Connor Schumann went yard in his first at bat to make it
1-0 here.
A ground ball, another hit, this time into right field.
Man going to third, the throw cut off.
And so we've got first and third with nobody out.
Here in the top of the second, already 2-0 Grand Valley State Lakers.
The Chargers looking to play some lockdown D going forward.
Warren's got some wheels.
And here did a great job of stretching that into third base.
Another single, these Lakers are finding really nice gaps in the infield.
That's right.
And here comes the two-old hitter hitting third in this inning.
Number eight, Kyle Knott.
Andrus comes set, the delivery.
A little backdoor slider to catch the outside part of the plate.
And we've got 01 here.
again top of the second man on first and third nobody out endris comes set those sliders are the pitches you used to just bamboozle hitters all another slider there i don't know i'm not sure if there was a slider or a cutter but very nice movement there so we've got oh and two here he's relying heavily on those off speed so far i mean in this event's been working for him oh two count looking to get something nice here and we'll see here if you can finish the job the delivery a little high not sure you
where that missed, but still a pretty solid pitch.
So we've got one and two.
Still a lot of room to play with.
Man on first and third.
Nobody out.
Endris takes a look at the man at first.
The delivery here.
And a high fly ball, but it's going to be out of play.
If you're just catching up with us, we've got baseball here,
Charger Baseball, on Hillsdale Radio Free 101.7.
Grand Valley State Lakers got off to an early lead,
2-0 in the top of the first.
Chargers held scoreless.
I thought this was basketball.
They got an out at second.
And a double play.
Really nice situational awareness by the charges there.
It went for the double play.
They get the man on second, the man on first.
But instead, the man on third, he got a little too much of a lead.
And he basically got picked off.
So now there's a man on first.
Way to clear the bags there.
Limit the damage.
That's a really nice play to get back in this ballgame.
Scott trying to get a little too great.
how there, Sam? Yeah, he got ambitious.
He thought he might be able to take home.
It'd be a costly sacrifice.
He'd give up two runs and get the man on third,
but the chargers managed to get the most out of it.
Very nice to work.
So we're coming off the 165 double play.
Pitcher comes set, Endress, the delivery.
A little high, so we've got 1-0,
and we've got two outs, folks.
One out away from getting out of this inning
without any further damage.
Curveball got away there, a little outs,
Just a bit outside, you could say.
I don't think he could hit that with an oar.
Pitcher takes a look at the runner at first,
comes set, the delivery, 2-0.
And 2-1 here, so we've got two outs, man on first,
looking to get the batter here,
get back, go to work on offense.
Yeah, that was a nice pitch to get right back in this count,
tell him he's not going anywhere.
The delivery.
And there we go.
We got a foul tip into the catchers' mint.
So 2-2-1 strike away from sending the chargers back to the dish.
Yeah, the Chargers is like nothing better than another swing and a miss here.
And here comes the 2-2 delivery, a foul ball.
So to keep this inning alive for the Lakers.
The Lakers in the light blue, charges in the dark blue.
And here we are.
Pitcher comes set, the delivery, 2-2.
Take three, he got him, and the Chargers will go to work trying to get some runs back in the bottom of the second.
Don't go anywhere. You're listening to Chargers baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the old ball game where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen. Today we talk about Jackie Mitchell, one of the first and one of the only female baseball players in baseball history.
Mitchell was born on August 29, 1913 in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up, Mitchell played in
any sports, including basketball, swimming, tennis, and baseball. In her teenage years, the Mitchell family
moved to Chattanooga, where she joined a baseball school and scouts from the Chattanooga Lookouts
saw her pitch. In 1931, she signed a temporary contract with the Lookouts to play two exhibition
games that year. On April 2nd, 1931, in a game against the New York Yankees, Mitchell,
at just 17 years old, was put into pitch for the lookouts. The first batter she faced was Babe Ruth.
She threw three pitches to him, two swings and misses, followed by a called third strike. After Ruth,
Gerig was up to bat. Again, she took only three pitches to ring him up. Many people are skeptical
of this game, however, and think that it was staged or was a publicity stunt. Following this game,
Mitchell played baseball on and off until her official retirement from baseball in 1937. This has
been the old ball game on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Chargers baseball,
everyone. It's two-nothing Lakers, bottom of the second. Chargers had a really nice double play
at the end of the inning there to get out of a jam. Another early jam that got out of
it really well. Great strikeout at the end
there to get back into the box.
Chargers are looking to bounce back here.
Tell you what, Sam, the double play got me in the mood
for a Charger dog. We have to go over to the concession
sands, dude.
Hey, after this inning, I'll spot you
six bucks. The pitch
comes and it misses a little bit low.
The six bucks? Six bucks, I can go for a charger
combo. Give me a charger
charger dog, a drink,
and some chips. That sounds nice.
One ball, one strike, here's the pitch.
Outside. You started the hands.
hands, but of course he has a great eye up there.
Joe Hardenberg out of Northville, Michigan.
Number 44 for the Chargers.
Two balls, no strikes. The pitch.
Swing, a hardy cut there.
Barely got a piece of it, but it goes out of play.
A little dribbler down the line.
Two balls and a strike.
Joe Hardenberg's batting 289 on the season.
Really nice. Looking for him to kickstart this inning well.
Ground ball to third.
scooped up easily and he's out at first.
I'll tell you what Sam, that was a nice play.
He came charging in, got it on the short hop,
able to fire it over to first for a real nice first out to this inning, honestly.
Yeah, I mean, you know, I would have liked to see that one squirt through,
but that's all right, you know.
Those happen, can't get in your head too much.
Next up, number three, Will Millard out of Ovalan, Illinois, catcher.
With the base is empty and one out,
Chargers down 2-0.
Here's the pitch.
First pitch swinging, he fouls it off.
Nice long foul ball, but it's going to be way out of play.
So the count moves to 1-0.
Sorry, 0-1 with 1-out.
He steps back into the box.
He's nicely bundled up on this chilly day.
Here's the pitch.
Inside, trying to back him up.
He's taking that stance really close to the plate.
Pitcher's got to show him who's boss.
As I said, to start the broadcast, we've got a crispy day here in Hillsdale, Michigan.
How do you think that affects the play?
Well, it's like I said, and a base hit up the middle.
Screamer, straight rope off the bat.
That's going to be the Chargers first hit.
Great at bat there, fought off the first pitch.
Got on base quickly.
That's what the Chargers needed.
Now we can see a little movement in the dug out there.
They're getting into it now.
And that's what you're looking for here, Sam.
Bottom of the second, don't need to do anything drastic.
Only down two runs.
We need to get some base runners, get some guys with some good looks,
some good opportunities to even this ball game up.
Exactly.
because at the end of the day, this game's about putting runs across the plate.
That's how you win.
The pitch to the lefty, outside.
Batters Danny Passano out of Traverse City, Michigan, the outfielder for Hillsdale.
Sitting on a 1-0 count right now with one out and a man on first following a nice base hit up the middle.
The pitch, another one well outside.
He looks that one into the glove.
I tell you what, he's looking pretty comfortable out there.
No sleeves.
He's just taking this cold as it comes.
Pickoff attempt by the pitcher.
He's in perfectly safe.
Still a 2-0 count.
Still a 2-0 score.
Lakers on top.
With one out and a man on first.
Here's the pitch.
Oh, and he chopped it into the outfield.
Oh, and a nice catch.
As the runner scrambles back to first.
I saw a diving catch there.
Another example, Sam, we've seen two liners to the outfielder.
outfield could have been a lot more but just Hillsdale a little unlucky so far today
seeing those well-hit balls go straight to the go straight to where the gloves are you know
exactly half the battle's putting it in play the charges are putting it in play eventually they're
going to start finding some gaps stringing a couple of those hits together you can expect them to put
some runs across the plate here and we've got Aaron Jsick up to bat out of Kalamazoo
Michigan the infielder for the charges the pitch swing
screamer over to third base, easy play, he gops for the man running to second.
And we're going to a break.

And welcome back to Hillsdale Charger Baseball here at Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium in southern Michigan,
beautiful Hillsdale, Michigan. We've got overcast skies here. Hillsdale, down to nothing early,
heading into the top of the third. If you're just catching up with us,
Charger baseball taking on the Grand Valley State Lakers.
I'm Jack Sullivan along with my partner, Sam Wallace.
Sam, what do you think so far?
Well, you know, I think that was a great second or second inning there for the Chargers.
They got a base hit.
They got some really good balls in play.
Great defense by the Lakers.
But really, that's what we're looking for.
They're putting balls in play.
We're getting too far behind in the counts.
That's what we really like to see.
Look for them to come back next inning and start doing some.
damage. Absolutely.
And here we got Jonas Goldbranson up for the second time today.
He flew out for a sacrifice fly earlier in the game to get them their second of two runs,
of course, that first coming on a homer to lead off the game.
Ground ball to the shortstop throws over and got him at first.
Nice start to the inning here, Sam.
The first couple of innings got off to a little bit of a wobbly start.
good to see them kind of settling in making some good plays wobbly is a good word for it but you can see
I mean the score sheet tells the story right two runs four hits in the first inning one run or one no sorry no
runs one hit in the second inning and here we're off to a great start ground ball looking for them to
get out of this quickly get back in the box like I said do some more damage high fly ball back to left
field and it will get past him runners past second heading to third and he will be safe you can probably
put that down as an e7 runner getting all the way to third and so Sam we've got a runner on third only
one out here Grand Valley State Lakers looking to take that lead up to three yeah you saw that that was
a routine fly ball I think something's happening but that's not the first time we've seen that
tonight. I don't know if it's the clouds, you know, kind of masking the ball a little bit,
but that's the second drop ball we've seen today.
I tell you what, back in my playing days, that was difficult to track a ball.
When you got gray skies, kind of blends in, makes it a little difficult to make a play
out there, especially there's a little bit of wind, kind of swirling around.
It has changed directions.
Yeah, they actually gave him a hit for that, so I guess he can't blame him then, huh?
Regardless, man on third with one out.
And we got an 02 count here.
As Sam said, man on third.
Pitcher comes set.
The O2 delivery.
And high and inside brushes them back.
Batter gives the catcher a little bit of a glare there.
Yeah, it's not exactly the way you thought this ending would go.
You got a great first out.
That pitcher had him right where he wanted.
And then that triple.
Pitcher doesn't seem to be too rattled, though.
Set.
And the delivery, hunt.
Fly ball to right field under it.
Tagging.
Throwing home and he will retreat back to third.
Excellent play.
Excellent play.
Beautiful toss to home plate by the right fielder there.
That was just an absolute bullet, a strike.
Keeps this a 2-0 game.
That could have been a lot worse.
On that little bloop single,
this can be so hard to track down and make a play on.
But now you got two outs.
And that was the right fielder.
Jacob Salee, great play out there.
And here we got two outs.
The O-O-O-Dilvery, ball one, one-and-o.
Man on third, charges down two-nothing here in the top of the third.
Looking to get out of another inning, scoreless,
stabilizing the game.
I've seen a lot of improvement so far.
That first inning was rough.
It was very shaky.
Second inning was a little better.
This one, again, another little miscue, but.
Man on third. So far they limited the damage. It's two outs now.
You do get the feeling that they're settling in a little bit, Sam.
I absolutely do.
Here's the 2-0 delivery.
And strikes, sneaks it in there. Looks like a little bit of a slider.
And we've got 2-1.
Two outs. Man on third.
Grand Valley State would really like to bring this guy home, make it 3-0.
And a foul ball off of his left shin.
That's going to leave a mark.
There's a really healthy cut there.
He saw he was trying to drive that one, bring the runner home.
Can't be putting anything in the infield anymore.
That's not going to do any good.
You've got to drive one to the outfield.
Absolutely.
And so here we go.
We've got two on, or we got one man on, excuse me, two and two, two outs.
Pitcher comes set.
The delivery here.
A high fly ball.
Right down the right field line in foul territory.
And he got it.
Great catch.
And we will head.
Beautiful catch. Way to end this inning. That's a really good end.
And the Chargers looking forward to going to work in the bottom of the third.
Don't go anywhere. We're going to break. You're listening to Chargers baseball and Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.

Welcome back to Chargers Baseball, everyone.
It's currently 2-0 Grand Valley State Lakers, bottom of the third inning.
Chargers, after a couple innings of solid defense, they're looking to get back in the box and start doing some damage.
So we saw them start to wake up a little bit in that second inning.
Base hit, really good contact.
They were driving that ball.
What do you expect to see here?
You know, Sam, they're definitely looking to get back into this game,
which would be nice to see.
We've got 8-9-1 due up, so hopefully they can get a couple men on
and then go to the top of the order.
Look to do some damage here on this bottom of third.
Yeah, with the heart of the order coming up,
you'd really like to see some production from your 8-9.
Oh-0, pitch is in there.
for a strike right down the middle.
Fat Italian meatballs is right down there.
But you get a look at that first pitch sometime.
It's now 0 and 1.2.
Caden, no walk. His second at bat.
Sorry, he's first at bat. Another pitch.
This one's a little bit high, so it's going to be
1-1. No swing out of him.
You can't tempt him with those.
Sun was trying to peek out of the sky for a little bit,
huh there, Sam? But now we've seen the clouds go back
to covering the sky, and we've got just clear overcast
today. Little wind
favoring right field.
Yeah, Sun was being a little
bashful earlier. He's hidden now.
2-1 pitch, swung on,
chopped up the middle. Second basement is right
there. And an easy play at first.
One out for the Chargers.
Oh, look at this little bat boy. He's just adorable.
Looks like we've got an honorary bad boy
today. That's right, Sam.
And here comes...
Rocco Tuduta.
Excuse me, we had 9-1-2 do-up.
My mistake.
So we've got the lead-off hitter.
The pitch.
No swing, and that's going to be ball.
Low and a little bit away.
Rocco-Tenuta.
From Barlet, Illinois here.
Looking to do some damage here in this bottom of a third inning.
Get a rally started.
No hits to this point as that one comes straight down the middle for strike one.
Count is one-in-one.
One out.
It's two-nothing Lakers in the bottom of the third.
Rocco Tuneo the batter out of Bartlett, Illinois, his second of the day.
Looks at another one into the dirt.
Two balls in one strike.
As we've discussed, Sam, Hillsdale's been doing a good job of putting the ball in play.
They've just been getting a little unlucky hitting it right, too, guys.
So hopefully they can start finding some gaps and evening up this ball game.
Patient approach.
That one's going to get through, just like we were talking about.
That's a nice little single into left field.
Man on first, that's the Charger's second hit.
I tell you what, Sam, right on cue.
Wasn't that nice to see that?
So we've got a second hit of the ball game only in the third inning for the Chargers,
hoping to bring that man around.
Yeah, not exactly a screamer off the bat, but you know what?
It found a gap, did its job.
Chargers got a man on first with one out.
Jacob Salee out of Otsego, Michigan, catcher.
He steps into the play right now.
Pitcher sets.
Pitch, a little outside.
Great block by the catcher.
keep that in front, prevent that runner from getting into scoring position.
One ball, no strikes to Silly.
You know, Sali had some great plays on the outfield last inning.
I'd like to see him reciprocate that at the plate.
Absolutely.
As the 1-0 pitch.
Out of play.
Healthy cut there, but back, out of play.
One ball and one strike.
He's a senior, so this is his last year.
He's looking to have a memorable year, you'd say.
College is a whole different ballgame.
The pitch.
And that's going to be in there for the second strike.
So it's one ball, two strikes with a man on first and one out.
Two nothing, Lakers, in the bottom of the third.
Chargers are started to wake up.
They're looking to do some damage.
The pitch comes, and he plunked him.
Oh, that's got to hurt.
He's loving it.
He's clapping at the dugout saying, come on, guys.
Let's go.
Let's get something started.
Get back in this ball game.
That's the energy you want.
He is not afraid to lay his body on the line.
And here comes big hitter, third hitter, three-hole hitter, Will Shannon.
Will Shannon, a nice corn-fed country boy.
Michigan native Bloomfield Hills.
Big man steps up with one out and two on.
This is the best opportunity to charge it's had yet.
And a nice fly ball, but it's going to be foul, deep fly ball into the bullpen.
Got a good bit of meat.
on that one. Yeah, he made good contact.
No balls in one strike to Shannon.
And he's swinging for the fences.
I think, you know, he represents the go-ahead run as of this moment.
And you can tell he's out there for blood.
You know, that ball, he got good contact on it, but it was a little outside.
Definitely aggressive.
And another one fouled back on the right side.
Another power swing by Shannon fouled back on the right side again.
Righty out of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan is out here looking for blood.
He's taking two hardy cuts, two foul balls.
He's got that nice, powerful swing.
He's a big guy.
He gets some leverage on the ball.
Menacing stance here in the box.
Menacing.
He's standing far back.
The pitch, swing, and that's poked into the outfield.
It's going to drop.
Base hit.
Runner rounds third.
He's coming home.
The cutoff is whiffed, and it is 2-1.
Hillsdale Chargers come back into this game with the run.
Can I tell you what, Sam?
They're not done yet.
still got men on first and second, one out.
It's a great opportunity for them to really do some damage,
the bottom half of this third inning,
and really make a statement after Grand Valley State put up two in the top of the first.
They're looking to not only just get back into it,
but they're looking at perhaps even take the lead here.
I mean, you can't ask for much more of a better opportunity.
The one out and two on, the big man, and the three spot,
comes, pokes one in the outfield, you don't need a dinger.
And we've got the four-hole hitter, Jeff Landis here.
The pitch,
weighing and a miss nice hardy cut there so a favorable situation for him here lefty batter against a righty pitcher
hopefully he's looking to throw one into the gap he's got a big gap out there pitch he looks it into the glove
for strike two it's now no balls two strikes one out chargers already have one across this inning it's
currently two nothing lakers in the bottom of the third but the charges are coming back only one out
first and second following a nice base hit the pitch that one's going to be a little bit high for
first ball one ball and two strikes charges scratch across three hits only one run no errors
for the lakers two runs on six hits and one error the pitch big swing and a miss he strikes out
tell you what sam that's a big strike out right there because now you don't really have to worry about
the men on first and second anymore you can focus on the batter you realize you get this guy
grand valley states out of this inning exactly but for the chargers mostly what it represents is
well this might be your best opportunity for a while you're in the heart of the order right now
joe hardenbaum the pitch swing and a nice fly ball that might find a gap no he settles under it
that's going to be the third out folks you are listening to chargers baseball on 101.1

Chargers taken on Grand Valley State University.
If you're just tuning in, I'm Jack Sullivan with my partner, Sam Wallace,
going into the top of the fourth.
Number 10, Colin Endress out for his third inning of work.
Doing a great job so far, a little lockdown baseball.
He hasn't given up a run yet.
Only, I think, a couple hits.
So he's doing a good job out there.
Keeping a lid on things, and hopefully we'll see that going forward.
Coming set, O-O pitch to start the inning, swing and a miss, and strike one.
Yeah, you can see the game's really changed after that first inning.
The Chargers are now out hitting them three to two, outscoring them one to nothing.
Absolutely.
The Lakers have put an error across the board.
the chargers have none.
So after that first inning,
charges really coming out on top here recently.
And it looks like that pitch may have gotten the catcher somewhere.
He looks a little shaken up.
They went out, umpire took time, go out and make sure he was okay, walk it off.
But nonetheless, we're back 0-1.
Colin Endress in set delivery,
pitching from the stretch even with nobody out.
Colin Endress, Traverse City, Michigan.
Native Hertz lovely up there, Sam.
I have been. It's lovely this time of year.
A little chilly, but, you know, nothing a nice campfire can't fix.
Hey, it's Michigan.
I know.
That's what you're going to get up here.
Bring me back south.
Set and the 2-1 delivery.
And you're going to go to 3-1 here.
That one was a little inside.
He's falling behind in this count.
He's really got to start putting one over the plate.
Sam, I'd say if there's one thing that Hillsdale struggled with thus far,
It's been falling behind in counts, like you said.
And a high fly ball.
Left field, they're camping under it.
And a nice play.
And so we've got one out to start the inning.
That crack of the bat must have been a little bit scary for those at first,
but once they saw him camping under it, easy play, routine play.
Those are the fundamentals that Hillsdale has down really well, of course.
And here comes Zach Warren,
looking to put something in play,
looking to get on base,
get something started for the Lakers.
The set, the delivery,
and strike one catches the lower part of the zone.
And so nice to see him get ahead there.
O-N-1, one out.
Yeah, Lakers have been pretty quiet since that first half,
first inning, you know, again, only two hits.
Especially going back to,
was the second or third,
be a nice double play.
Yeah.
And it ended up resulting in a scoreless inning for the Lakers.
Again, yeah.
really nice plays by Hillsville.
Oh, a nice slider there, and that's going to catch the outside part of the plate for strike two, one and two, one out.
Nobody on.
Those fundamentals have been looking really solid for the chargers, but they've been going above and beyond.
They've been making some nice creative.
Another slider, strike three, two down.
They throw it around the horn, looking to get one more and go back to work here at the other side of the dish.
Two quick outs for the chargers.
They'd love to see that.
We can hear the bullpen chattering from up here.
The ball boy is ecstatic.
He's dancing around, vibing with the coach.
Sam, I tell you what, that slider is looking filthy today.
It's just looking rancid.
Oh, and that one, oh-oh.
High-fly ball to center field.
He makes the catch.
The Chargers.
Lost the hat, but made the ball.
Three up, three down.
Perfect inning.
Going to try to put some more runs on the board.
It's 2 to 1 Grand Valley State Lakers.
Don't go anywhere, folks.
You're listening to Chargers baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
The city's still remains as one of the oldest and most important cities in the Midwest.
It has since earned the nickname of the Motor City due to its history with Henry,
This has been what's in a name.
My name is Megan Pitcock, and you're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Folks, welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM scores two to one,
going to the bottom of the fourth inning.
Chargers have been having all the momentum recently.
And they're looking to go back to work here with the number five batter coming up here,
looking to start doing some more damage,
start to keep chipping away at that lead.
They're only down by one.
You know, they scratched one across,
scratch one across last inning.
They're definitely looking to do about the same here.
Number six, batter.
Will Millard out of O'Fallan, Illinois.
Tell you what, Sam, speak of going to get a charger dog.
That last inning, nothing doing here for the Lakers.
Would have been a nice job, nice time to go grab a charger combo.
I know, what a snooze of an inning.
The pitch.
swung and ripped through the gap between shortstop and third.
Another base hit.
They've been hitting that gap all day, doing a really nice job of just pulling it straight through the gap.
I tell you what, Sam, we were talking about last inning in the bottom of the third.
We were talking about how they're not getting any balls to fall, getting hitting any gaps.
And ever since then, looks like fortunes of change for the Targers.
Indeed, they have.
They now have four hits on the board to the Lakers' six, but they used to be a lot worse.
I believe it was four or five after the first inning.
Here's the pitch with the man on first.
Oh, he shows Bunt.
He pulls it back, but it's a strike anyway.
Speaking of Charger Dogs, what makes it a Charger Dog and not just a normal hill hot dog?
That's a great question, Sam.
Like, is it made out of Chargers?
As a California native myself, of course, that's modeled after the famous Dodger Dog.
Of course.
Here's the pitch, and it's way outside.
One ball and one strike.
A phenomenon, of course, that is swept across the nation in baseball stadiums everywhere.
A bunch of copycats out there.
One ball, one strike with a man on first, no outs.
I tell you what, Sam, I bet the Charger Dog is the original.
I bet it is.
I think they came up with it first.
Swing and a miss.
Healthy cut there, one ball, two strikes.
No outs, though.
Man on first, charges are down two to one.
But have out hit them in recent innings, four to two.
So we're looking for some momentum change here.
I think the momentum change already happened, Jack.
What do you think?
Absolutely.
And even though the Chargers are down,
We've still got...
Take off attempt by the pitcher.
He's, of course, safe in the first.
Even though the charges are down to 1, I think we've got a little turning at the tides here.
And we've started to see some balls go through the infield,
started to see some balls drop in the outfield.
And the charges are in a great position.
That's a double play ball over to third.
And he does not go to second.
Yeah, I think, Sam, that was just too much of a chopper.
Man was already at second.
Got some wheels coming off first base bag.
So we've got a man on second.
still only one down though.
Yeah, I was talking to some of the players before the game.
They call him a matchbox car because of those wheels he's got.
He was into second before the third baseman even grounded the ball.
Barely fielded it before he was already in safely.
He was in standing.
It was an easy play.
Got the man at first, but a nice sacrifice there.
One out, man on second, man on scoring position.
He represents the tying run.
As the clock strikes 5 o'clock, we're here.
in the bottom of the fourth. Here's Sam,
man on second, as you said, one out.
Chargers looking to get this guy home, tie the ball game up here, bottom of the fourth.
That would be a great situation for the chargers.
Aaron Jasek here, fouls one off.
Dribbler down the third baseline.
Fowl. No balls. One strike.
One out. Man on second.
Down by a run.
He's a freshman from Kalamazoo.
He shows Bunt.
Didn't quite make contact. Going for a little drag there.
Nice play. Nice thought.
We like that.
But fortunately, no surprise now.
The corner infielders do not adjust.
I don't think they're worried about him going again.
No balls and two strikes with one out.
The pitcher wheels and deals.
And it's a little outside for ball one.
I got to ask you, Sam, so with the new beautiful Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium here in Hillsdale.
Beautiful.
And it's full, it's all turf, even the dirt is all turf.
Do you think that I'm not sure.
sure of other college stadiums in division two in the conference how many are swing and a foul
oh goodness that almost hit us i was afraid for my life there that's right not sure how many are
like this all turf uh do you think that may pose a bit of an advantage for the chargers a little
home field getting to see because the ball definitely bounces different off the turf it certainly moves
different i imagine the cleats grip that turf and that dirt a little different as the pitch comes
screamer up over the second base bag rounding second the pitch the three
Throw home cut off by the pitcher and the ball game is tied with a beautiful single up the middle by Aaron Jasek.
And that's what we've been talking about.
Another one, another pit finding the gap here right up the middle.
And as we've said, tides are turning. Chargers favor.
We've got 2-2 here.
Tides are turning.
The Chargers, hitters are starting to flex their muscles a little.
Just muscling balls through these outfield.
Nothing showy, no fireworks from them yet, but they've been doing a great job of finding those gaps.
A lot of precision hitting out of them.
Still one out with the man on first and the ballgame tie in now.
And Caden.
Caden, Noak, the batter.
Caden, Noak, bringing a little good vibes with Kid Rocks all summer long for his walk-up song.
I love that song, Sam.
I do love that song.
Makes me happy.
Sun is starting to poke its happy face out through the clouds again.
As the Southpaw sets in the box, the runner's going.
And he's safe at second.
Nice stolen base.
Great jump.
Got some wheels.
They call him hot wheels.
Stolen base with two balls and no strike.
Runner's in scoring position now.
He represents that go-ahead run.
With one out, Caden Nowak is definitely trying to drive him home.
Do some damage.
Take a lead for the first time in this ball game.
And he's going to third, too.
And he's safe at third.
Safe at third.
Two in a row.
Back-to-back pitches.
And Sam, how big is that?
So now you've got a man on third with only one out, a sack fly, a bunt,
any kind of, really a lot of kinds of balls in play will get that runner home.
I know.
You can have a lot of productive outs here.
Such a big difference having a man on third versus second with only one out.
Exactly.
A lot of productive outs possible here with a three-o count he takes.
And that one's a strike.
Three balls and a strike.
Very big opportunity for the chargers here.
Hearing a lot of chatter here from the Hillsdale dugout,
to see they're getting into it the pitch swing ground her up the middle but that's short and it's
dribbling the run comes across the chargers take the lead two out he's out at first great
play by the second baseman there but unfortunately for them that's a very productive out for kaden
rbi across the plate beautiful play by the charges there chargers take the lead for the first
time in this game they scratched across to this inning one last inning and we're going to do some more
Rocco to Nuda
Rocko to Nuto
Walking up to the plate
Walking up to the plate
With a little bit of swagger here
Love to see that
As they take the lead
3 to 2
Love to see that
He's looking to continue this inning, Sam
He absolutely is
I mean the bases are empty
But that's not a reason
To lose your momentum
The pitch
Another ball
Two balls and no strikes
Do you think they're rattling
The pitcher here
He's been throwing a lot of balls
Getting behind in the count
Yeah I think it's tough
To be out there on the mound
When things aren't really going your way
you never know how it's affecting him.
The pitch, swing, deep drive to center.
He makes the catch.
Center field over is right there.
Good read on that ball.
Well, folks, that's all for us this inning.
But come back next to the inning.

Welcome to the Grammar Minute,
where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and I'm here to talk about the golden rule of commas.
It's going to be a lot simpler than it sounds.
Are you ready? Here it is.
When in doubt, don't use them.
Let me explain.
People are often tempted to put commas in places they don't really belong.
A common mistake, for example, is to put them between dependent clauses,
such as I went to the store, comma, and then the park.
This is just an unnecessary slowdown for your reader,
and it can imply separation of ideas that actually go together.
If you say a sentence out loud and don't stop to take a breath,
you probably don't need to put a comma there.
Give your reader the freedom to skim.
Don't slow them down when you don't have to.
If you're not certain whether your sentence needs a comma, chances are it doesn't.
In writing, it's better to be a fast talker with fewer commas
than a slow talker with commas every few words.
That's your grammar minute.
Folks, welcome back to Charger Baseball.
After that really inspirational advertisement about commas,
we see that the charges have added their own punctuation mark to this game
scratching across two in the fourth inning to take a lead this one's an exclamation point
not a comma a little more exciting absolutely sam and i got to tell you so we've got a new pitcher
on the mound number 31 hayden hoffpower out of shreveport louisiana on the bump for the
chargers i got my uh grandfather actually is from shreveport is he really yeah and then moved up
to to detroit michigan ended up working in the ford factory factory
back in the 40s.
Yeah.
Great story.
Fellow Southern boy.
Absolutely.
Well, he's definitely looking to continue that momentum that we had in the last three innings.
And here walks up.
Center fielder Kyle Knott, he made the last out in the bottom half of the fourth.
Here comes the top half of the fifth.
Chargers lead three to two after that last two run bottom of the fourth inning.
The delivery here.
from half power a little high so starting the inning with one and oh you know that was a strong
confident pitch sometimes those pitching changes can be scary you don't really know you know
maybe he doesn't carry the momentum as well but i think he's going to do just fine three scoreless
beautiful innings uh and he's coming in to to you know carry the torch a little do you think he
can do that absolutely absolutely he has gotten off to a two-o start the delivery here and
batter will take strike one again that's Kyle not the center fueler and so we've got two one he's looked at
three and three in a row as we can see the rain sparkling on the grass as the sunshine comes out once again
skies are clearing up a little jack do you think that sun i think that sun might affect some of the
some visibility out here the plate is still in full shade um so that's definitely on the batter's side
but those outfielders might have a harder time a little bit looks like it's a little off center which is
nice so neither the
center fielder or the
right fielder will be too affected
I don't think yeah
he the batter got a little cocky there he thought
it was ball four threw away his bat but
stay right where you are buster
not so fast not so fast
the three due delivery
a drive to left center
and a great catch coming in
great catch coming in
that's the second time he's lost
a hat on a nice
catch. Do you think he needs to tighten the brim a little bit? Maybe. That's Danny Passanol out in
center field, Traverse City, Michigan native. Beautiful catch to start the ending. So now instead of
catch, but I think it's got to tighten up the cap a little bit. Instead of what could have been
ball for just to pitch a go, we've got an out out of it. And so we've got nobody on, one out.
Pitcher in the stretch, set, the delivery. And that's well hit down the right field line. He's
looking two and looks like he will easily get there having a little trouble in the corner he's looking
three the cut the throw to third oh he's safe throw is just a little bit too high maybe two or three
feet too high i think if that throw is just a little bit down he's got him other than that it was a
bullet tell you what sam i saw him round in second learned looking at that third base coach for some
guidance and he said come on over here buster and uh he ends up safe on at third standing at third
Well, you know, we saw, you on the radio, didn't see this, but Jack and I up here in the studio,
and we saw it bounce off the foul pole.
I think that threw that right fielder for a loop a little bit.
He didn't quite, it looked like it took a bounce he wasn't quite expecting.
Absolutely.
I think that split second gave that man an extra base.
Always a little trouble when it's hit over there in the corner, not sure where it's going to go,
which wall it's going to bounce off of, right, Sam.
And so the charges will come and talk things over, and we'll take a little break.

This is The Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group.
The year is 1842 and a patient is about to have a tumor surgically removed,
but for the first time in history, it will be done painlessly.
Born in Macon County, Georgia, Dr. Crawford Long was a surgeon and a pharmacist
who had experienced the brutality of performing surgery without anesthesia.
but all that was about to change.
He administered sephoric ether on a towel
and had his patient breathe through it.
And to the delight of everyone, especially his patient,
the operation was painless.
Dr. Crawford-Long had discovered anesthesia.
In 1845, he used that same method on his wife
during childbirth.
And it must have worked because she bore him 12 children.
This has been the Making of America.
I'm Michael Emerson.
And you can visit us at Jefferson Media Group
dot com and welcome back to charge your baseball while you're away we had a couple pitches and there we go so
we just had a high fly ball second second baseman ranging back was able to catch it and so now we've got
two outs kept that man on third no tag up and so chargers are just one out away from getting out of
yet another inning scoreless yeah sometimes those little bloopers can be hard because it's really
any man's ball out there but that one is shallow enough that that
The runner on third couldn't really tag up.
Didn't have much of an opportunity.
Absolutely.
Good job by the second baseman.
Getting out of there to no man's land.
Yeah.
Able to track it down.
So here we go.
We've got two outs.
1 and 0.
Man on third.
Pitcher comes set.
The delivery.
Little outside.
And that's going to be ball two.
So 2 and 0, again, falling behind.
Chargers today have been rather frequently falling behind in the count.
Again, set 2.0 delivery.
Swing and a mess.
So we've got two and one.
Again, Sam, two else just one out away.
So if they can...
Really big cut.
You know, he's swinging.
He started his hands on a ball way outside the plate.
I think he's a little antsy.
A 2-1 delivery fly ball out to center field, chasing him back.
And a nice catch near the warning track as the Chargers get out of here with a fourth
scoreless inning in a row and will go to work at the dish.
Try to put some runs up.
Don't go anywhere. You're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor. Here's Jinnah Suhita.
On June 6, 1918, Gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman was serving near Chautau-Tierre France. His company had taken Hill 142 and was attempted to consolidate their position.
But immediately after taking the position, enemy forces began launching several hostile counterattacks against the line.
Sergeant Hoffman was attempting to organize a position on the north slope of the hill when he saw 12 of the enemy armed with five light machine guns crawling towards his group.
Given the alarm, he rushed towards the hostile detachment, bayoneted the two leaders and forced the others to flee, abandoning their guns.
His quick action, initiative and courage drove the enemy from a position from which they could have swept the entire hill with machine gunfire and forced the withdrawal of American troops.
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty, gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman received both the Navy Medal of Honor and the Army Medal of Honor and the Army.
the Army Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome back to Chargers baseball, everyone. Chargers took a nice lead in the fourth,
looking to come back here in the bottom of the fifth. It's now three to two chargers after a shaky
first inning. The Lakers got up early, two nothing in the first. Chargers have put up four scoreless
since then while scoring their three themselves. They're still getting out hit seven to five.
The Lakers with one error across the board. Chargers are coming back.
back into the box. They're looking to do some damage this inning.
Sun is starting to poke through.
It's a beautiful day here. It's still a little chilly, sitting at about 40 degrees.
Pitchers warming up now. Everyone's looking nice and fresh out there.
I think these Lakers are hungry.
They're looking to get out of here, scoreless, steal some of this momentum back.
So far, this has been a game of momentum.
Early on again, it was the Lakers.
Recently, it's been the Chargers.
Chargers took about an inning or two to steal that momentum.
momentum back, but they have it all now.
We're coming back to the meat of the order.
They're looking to do some damage here.
As the batter steps up to the plate, we're ready to play some ball.
Welcome back, Jack.
First up is Jacob Salee.
Number two, so we're really in the heart of the order here.
I think this is their golden opportunity to really steal this game.
Absolutely, Sam.
I tell you what, I just had the opportunity to catch up with Hillsdale's first base coach.
that spirits are really looking up in the dugout after a good four innings on defense,
a good couple innings on offense, taking the lead here, three to two.
And the first pitch is a strike.
Continue that momentum.
Count is 0-1, no outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Hillsdale is up, three to two.
The pitch is way out, well outside.
Don't know if he was trying to tempt him with that one,
but frankly, he wasn't going to hit that if he was swinging an oar.
One ball.
One strike, no outs.
To the catcher Jacob Salee.
Batting second.
Swing, pop fly, but it's going to go out of play.
Oh, and it hits the light post.
That's some accuracy right there.
Now, Jack, what are you looking for this inning?
From the 2, 3, 4, we get the cleanup coming up.
Absolutely.
I think what we're looking for here is get a man or two on base,
let that 4th hitter come in, and do his job clean it up.
Exactly.
Jacob Sillie is looking to get on base any way he can.
One ball, 2.2.
strikes the south ball wheels and deals swing and a mess nice pitch one out for the
chargers not quite the way you want to start an inning but you know nothing that's not
nothing you can't overcome I'm next is Will Shannon he had a nice base hit to drive home
a run last inning last inning that is number 29 here comes the junior Will
Shannon Bloomfield Hills Michigan
native. Wheels of deals. Nice framing by the catcher there, but unfortunately the ump wasn't fooled.
A little high and outside, huh Sam? Yeah, no hoodwinking this guy. He knew a ball when he saw one.
One ball, no strikes. Only one out. Pitch. Some heat. Down and low. But that's in there for strike one.
One ball, one strike. Here, third baseman's checking his watch. I wonder if he's got a hot date tonight.
even count here halfway through the game the pitch swing and a long drive that's going to find a gap
no it's hot he lost his hat too what is it with these center fielders really great contact
by will shannon there i really thought it was going to drop personally i mean that was a rope
that was probably 360 feet out to that 370 section but just a great catch you know he got it got a good
Reed got his wheels moving early on.
Nonetheless, another well-struck ball from the Chargers,
and looking to continue to keep putting that ball in playing.
They're going to keep falling like they have been the last couple of innings.
Nothing to worry about.
Next up is Jeff Landis, the first baseman.
Batting forth, Salpaw, wheels and deals.
Pitch is in there.
He takes strike one.
Dugout didn't like that strike call.
No, no, they didn't.
Either did I.
It's now.
no balls one strike and two outs here in the bottom of the fifth the pitch another take but this one's a ball
so the count evens up at one in one they know not quite the uh not quite the way you wanted this
the sending to start off but you know you still got a lead another pitch is taken that's going to
be strike two another called one you know the inning didn't quite go the charger's way so far but
it's not over yet and again they've got a lead they just got to protect they've been playing
really locked down defense and I've been impressed.
Absolutely.
Sunny skies is the shadow's lengthen across the field.
Here's the pitch.
That one's going to be a little outside.
Count evens again at two and two with two outs.
Two runs on seven hits with one error.
The Lakers.
Three runs on five hits and no errors for the chargers.
The pitch.
Inside.
Almost got his hands.
He got his hips out of there.
in time so now it's full count two outs nobody on base for the chargers so far a quick inning
with the full count the south paw sets the payoff pitch tapped up oh we could have caught that if there
wasn't a net tapped back behind the plate you got your glove ready sam what's that you got your glove ready
oh i have it i bring it to every game been playing with that glove since little league a towering man they call him
Squatch. The pitch. Oh, and he cranks it to right field. Well, foul. He got way out in front of it there.
Tell you what, Sam, we got another payoff pitch coming up here. Full count, three to, two, two outs.
Nobody on and hoping to get up and three up, three down.
Well, the Lakers are. We're hoping for something a little different up here. You know, we see everything through,
through chargers covered glasses, you know?
Absolutely.
Payoff pitch once more.
outside and he walked him man on first base for the chargers to keep this inning alive
you can hear the chatter from the dugout a little applause they're feeling happy about themselves jack
and i think they have a reason to absolutely next up it's going to be joe hardenberg
from northfield northville michigan the outfielder number 44 he steps up to the plate the pitch
A little bit inside.
Ball 1.
I was my first time on the call today on the radio.
Sam, I don't know about you, but I grew up with a coach telling me my whole life that I had a face made for radio.
So maybe this is exactly where I was supposed to be.
Yeah.
You're doing great, bud.
Thank you.
You know what, you do have a face made for radio.
It's beautiful.
I like seeing it.
The pitch, swing and a miss.
I think that's a bad thing, Sam.
Oh, is it?
Face made for radio as opposed to a face made for TV.
Oh, you could be right there.
One ball, one strike, man on first.
Two outs here in the bottom of the fifth.
The pitch.
High and outside there.
Well, outside.
We got the lefty on the mound.
Lefty on righty,
righty with some advantage here.
Yeah, he's definitely looking to find a gap here,
keep this inning alive.
He's going to have to come into the zone.
Maybe bring the big man on first over to third.
Keep this ending alive.
The pitch.
swing and a miss count evens at two and two
nice cut
but fortunately it's a little out of the zone there
he's swinging at bad ones he's got a you know with two strikes
he's got to lock in swing
he's battling he pops one back behind the plate
over us actually yeah they're really making this pitcher work
very hard and you know that's what it's all about you know he's supposed to be their
good pitcher but they're making him work for every inch right here
He's got a high pitch count right now as the pitch comes.
Swing and a foul tip.
But it drops.
He stays alive.
Just popped straight out of the glove of the catcher.
And again, we've got two and two here.
Two, two outs.
Man on first.
Joe Hardenberg.
This is a real standoff here in this at bat.
It's been quite a few pitches, I think six or six or so.
The pitch.
And that one's dribbled in front of the plate.
That's going to be a tough play.
pitcher dives he does not get there in time in field single in field single safe at first really nice way to leg that out a lot of guys give up there he did not give up the pitcher did a good job getting to the ball unfortunately i don't know if that grass is a little slick but he couldn't quite keep it in this glove so now we've got a man on first and a man on second and here comes will milard will malard is definitely trying to do some damage here two quick outs to start the inning but the church
scratch across two more runs here
or sorry two more hits here
and they're trying to keep this alive
I mean there's this is starting to become
a big inning
Millard
Will Mallard
catcher steps up to the plate
against the lefty swing
tapped it back into the dugout
yeah that home plate
is all covered in shadow
but it's coming in from the sun
do you think that's affecting his swing at all
affecting his visibility maybe
absolutely you know it's always tough when you see it
come from the sun and it crosses over into the shadow.
It's tough to keep track of the ball.
Swing and a nice hit.
That's going to drop into left field.
Big man is chugging around third.
He's going to slide in for nothing, Chargers.
First and second, four two.
My apologies, I got excited there.
Can't blame you there, Sam.
So the Chargers...
It's all for the love of the game.
Chargers have scratched at least one across for the third inning in a row with three
consecutive singles after starting the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.
And Sam with another man still in scoring position, even though they got two outs, see if they
can't put a base hit in there and put another crooked number on the board.
Yeah, you're really looking for them to put one up there.
The pitch.
A little bit high and that's going to be a ball.
One ball, no strikes.
Two outs.
If you're just tuning in, the chargers after getting two quick outs here in the bottom of the fifth,
three consecutive singles makes it four to two chargers oh goodness that one gave me a heart attack
as he fouls one straight back into the net that was coming right between my eyes one ball one strike
still two outs the hits are even at seven but the runs are not it's four to two charges hillsdale
very efficient thus far in the game and we've got two men on the pitch high again the dugout is
really getting into this they're loving this game
two balls one strike they've been making this pitcher work he's working for a living this inning the pitch
outside three balls and one strike do you think he's looking a little fatigued out there on the mound
i don't know it's tough to say i think this could be just a little bit of a tough situation tough to
settle down and and deal strikes here uh come set and here we go the three one pitch pitch swing tapped
behind the plate.
So Sam here, we got 3-2-2-out,
which means the runners are going to
going here. Runners in motion.
We got hot wheels and speedy out there.
So a base hit. He'll be off to the races
as soon as the pitcher goes into his wind-up.
Any kind of base hit. Any kind of
base hit through the infield is going to definitely
Oh, and he gets caught in the hot zone.
Picked off in second.
And he missed him.
Oh, he's out.
That's just a silly play
to end the inning. Caught between
second and third, caught in a pickle.
Well, unfortunately, folks, that's going to end the inning.
But you're listening to Chargers Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen.
Today we talk about Jackie Mitchell, one of the first and one of the only female baseball players in baseball history.
Mitchell was born on August 29, 1913 in Memphis, Tennessee, growing up.
up, Mitchell played many sports, including basketball, swimming, tennis, and baseball. In her teenage
years, the Mitchell family moved to Chattanooga, where she joined a baseball school and scouts
from the Chattanooga Lookouts saw her pitch. In 1931, she signed a temporary contract with the
lookouts to play two exhibition games that year. On April 2nd, 1931, in a game against the New York
Yankees, Mitchell, at just 17 years old, was put into pitch for the lookouts. The first batter
she faced was Babe Bruh. She threw three pitches to him, two swings and misses, followed by a called
third strike. After Ruth, Lou Gehrig was up to bat. Again, she took only three pitches to ring him up.
Many people are skeptical of this game, however, and think that it was staged or was a publicity stunt.
Following this game, Mitchell played baseball on and off until her official retirement from baseball in 1937.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Folks, welcome back to Chargers. Basketers scratched another one across the board.
Third inning in a row, they put one up. It's now four to two chargers after a shaky first.
The Lakers put up two in the first. Chargers are now up four to two.
Hits are even at seven.
Lakers have one error on the board. Chargers have none.
Absolutely, Sam.
And so we've got a four to two ball game and rips it into left field.
The one hopper to the left fielder, and that'll be an easy single.
Gets it back in, keeps him at first.
And so the first pitch of the inning results in a base hit.
And the Grand Valley State Lakers are off to a good start at this top of the sixth.
hoping to get back in this game they're losing four to two to the chargers i think that's the first
lead off hit they've given up since the first inning yes and steps in uh number 45 Connor McCormick
the first baseman big hitter McCormick the seven hole hitter one ball one strike two check swings
that one didn't go his way man on first one ball one strike no out
Pickoff attempt.
Gotta keep him honest over there.
Still a light breeze favoring the hitter.
Pitcher looks in, comes set, takes a look at the runner at first.
Lifts his leg, the delivery.
And strike two.
We got one and two, no outs.
Man on first.
I'll tell you what, that was a violent swing.
I think there was a little pent-up aggression in that one.
Grand Valley's got to be a little frustrated after coming in so strong in the first inning
and being pretty much show.
shut out by the Chargers since that. Only about three hits.
Absolutely. And then you see ball two there, so County even said two into it.
If you're just joining in, we've got Charger baseball taken on Grand Valley State Lakers.
Chargers up four to two after giving up a couple in top of the first.
I'm Jack Sullivan with my partner, Sam Wallace, the 2-2 delivery and 3-2 ball.
And runner takes off for second. Got him at second.
Nice play. One hop at second.
And so the lead-off hitter, or the lead-off
batter who got a great hit into left field tried to steal second got a little greedy and now
got him out at second so nobody on one out full count pitcher knew he was going to do that he tried
to pick him off the first once or twice read him like a book and so nonetheless that will result
in ball four and so got a man on first one out charger defense shifts a little bit to accommodate
the righty. So they
eliminate the runner at first, only to
fill it back up again with a full count
walk. But they got it out
out of the process.
He's taking another lead, another pick-off
attempt. That one's
up near his noggin for
ball one.
He'll steal,
one ball, two of the latest bad here,
the last night of the six inning.
One ball, no
strikes, the pitch, high. Throwed
by the catcher. Two
No strikes. Nice throw by the catcher over to first.
And so we've got 2-0, one out. Chargers leading 4 to 2 in the top of the 6th.
And a foul ball even two, it makes the count 2 and 1.
One out in the inning. Pitching from the stretch with the man on first, lifts his leg, the delivery, and foul back.
So evens the count of 2-2. Sam, what do you think?
Well, I think he, you know, you kind of traded an out for a runner and then put him right back on first.
So that's got to be a little bit frustrating.
But again, it's not too bad, you know, that's nothing that's sort of running the mill.
But with one out, one runner, better than one run with no outs, I suppose.
Charger baseball taken on Grand Valley State Lakers, up four to two in the top of the sixth.
Full count here. One out. Man on first.
Pitcher in the stretch. Looking in. Come set.
Lifts his leg. The delivery.
A high fly ball. Catcher looking back. And that'll get out of play.
Whoa.
Sounded like some thunder. I think that caused some structural damage to this beautiful new building.
Speaking of the beautiful new building, what do you think of the new stadium?
I think it's gorgeous. I watch them construct this from my home in the suites.
And, you know, it sucks to see such a beautiful open prairie land go.
But we've got some better grass.
Runner's been going on the last two pitches, but he's been fouling them off.
So we've got three, two, one out.
Looks like a speedy runner on first.
Yeah, real speedy.
He's using those wheels.
They've got to do something to get back in this game.
So they're doing a hit and run here, the full count.
Only one out.
Runner will not go.
Ball four.
Annie walked him.
Two walks in this inning.
Do you think they've been battling really well?
Do you think he's losing the little command, baby?
You know, I think it's tough to say because you don't want to, you know,
balls are of utility as well.
And so you can't, you know, throw everything right down the middle,
got to mix it up a little bit, got to keep them on their toes.
But when it comes to walks, that really is just,
they're difficult to overcome.
A lot of times,
I was always told growing up, you know, you walk a guy, you got to really plan on him scoring.
Obviously, you don't want that to happen, but it's difficult.
Well, he starts this at bat with another ball.
One ball, no strikes.
Still one out.
Now there's runners on first and second.
Pitcher comes set.
The delivery man on first and second, and a little outside.
And so count goes to two and oh, only one out here in the top of the six.
Chargers have had great defense the last four.
innings held the Lakers scoreless. Yeah, we've seen some really creative, spectacular plays.
And another ball, so that'll move to 3-0. Chargers got to be real careful here before they let
things get out of hand. Got to come into the zone here. You cannot get the bases juiced on walks.
It's just not acceptable. And strike one. So count moves to 3-1, coming into the zone.
You got to think maybe he was just taken.
good thing to get back in there.
You cannot give more free passes this inning.
It's already two on.
And that'll be ball four.
And so we've got bases loaded.
Sam won out.
A lot of things can get a runner home here.
Of course, there's just a normal base hit,
but we've got any kind of sack fly,
any kind of, a lot of different ways to get that runner home from third or even two.
They're going to come together on the mound here to discuss.
You know, he's walked three in a row.
We haven't seen the bases loaded since the top of the first of that two-run inning.
But when they did that, it was bases loaded.
One out, they got out of that jam without any further damage.
Regardless, three consecutive walks.
You know, it's lucky they caught him stealing.
Otherwise, that would have been a run home by now.
You're going to confer on the mound.
Taking their time here, coach gives them a little pat on the back.
Players are still going to talk.
Outfielders taking a knee.
If you're just tuning in, the score is four to two chargers.
Eight hits for the guests.
Seven for the chargers.
One error for the Lakers.
None for the chargers.
We're in the top of the sixth, with one out and the base is loaded.
All on walks.
Brandon Scott is our pitcher, number 30, fresh out of Adrian, Michigan.
Well, they're going to replace that pitcher.
Good effort by him.
But Brandon Scott's got some work to do here.
He's going to, you know, he's not been handed a real doozy.
Got a real stinker to work with.
And he's going to have to do some work.
He's warming up on the mound right now.
We're going to go to break.

On August 6th, 1945, an atomic weapon was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in hopes of ending World War II.
However, few are aware for days prior to the bombing, American pilots dropped leaflets over the city, warning the people to leave.
Read this carefully as it will save your life, it read,
We are in the possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man, and then it urged them to evacuate their city.
Even though over 100,000 people lost their lives in Hiroshima, the Empire of Japan still refused to surrender.
It took a second bombing on Nagasaki before the Emperor himself ordered the surrender over the objections of his military leaders.

Welcome back to Chargers Baseball, everyone.
If you're just tuning in, it's the top of the sixth.
Chargers are sitting on a nice four to two lead, but the bases have been walked full.
New pitcher in here, Brandon Scott.
One out, bases loaded.
Brandon Scott is out of Adrian, Michigan.
He's six foot, 180 pounds.
Ground ball up the middle.
That should be two.
Out at second.
Out at first.
Two, two runs.
Sorry, two outs.
Beautiful way to get out of there.
walk themselves into a monster jam, one pitch, and we're off to the break.

Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor.
Here's Juna Suhita.
On June 6, 1918, Gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman was serving near Chautau-Tierry, France.
His quick action, initiative and courage drove the enemy from a position from which they could have swept the entire hill with machine gun fire and forced the withdrawal of American troops.
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty,
Gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman received both the Navy Medal of Honor and the Army Medal of Honor.

Folks, welcome back to Chargers baseball. Chargers got Scott out of a jam.
In spectacular fashion, after walking the base is loaded with only one out.
New pitcher Brandon Scott, a lefty out of Adrian, came in with one pitch.
It was a brown ball to the shortstop.
easy double play so going out in style there they're gonna come to the plate
now again to try to tack on to this lead they've thrown up four runs in the
last three innings scoring in every inning hoping to put up a crooked number
here they're looking to extend their lead puts some icing on the cake
bottom of the sixth it's four to two it's still charge
next is the lefty dandy pass and all
He's looking to get this started.
Here's the pitch.
Well outside, that's going to be ball one.
He's the seven hole hitter, so we're at the bottom of the lineup.
There's another one comes in high, and it's two balls and no strikes.
He's going to have the number eight, Jasek and the number nine, Noak, coming up next to follow him.
and then we're off the top of the order.
Swing and a moonshot
popped up into no man's land.
The left fielder's there, and he makes an easy grab.
One down for the Chargers.
Up next can be Aaron Jasek.
He's had a nice day so far.
But he comes to the plate with only one out.
The plate is currently covered in shadow
as the field is overtaken by the sun,
which has been rare for us today.
It's been sort of coming in and out.
We're sitting at around 40 degrees.
breeze or the slight breeze coming in.
The pitch, too high, ball one.
One ball, one strike, one out.
Chargers have seven hits, the guests only have eight hits.
He's looking real comfortable at that plate
as he gets set, pitcher, wheels and deals.
The pitch is in there for strike one.
The counts even, one apiece.
With one out, charges are up four to two,
here in the top of the sixth.
Chargers have had all the momentum recently.
The pitch.
Oh, he started the hands, but it was too far inside.
Way to stop it.
Those can be tempting.
Those little off-speeders.
Two balls.
One strike.
Pitcher is checking his playbook.
Seems a little confused about something.
I don't know what it is.
But nevertheless, he gets set.
The pitch.
Inside and low again, it's now three balls in one strike.
So three consecutive walks for the Lakers last inning.
After giving up an early out,
and then double play to get out of the inning.
They went quietly.
And this inning is going about the same way as last one,
a walk for Aaron Jaseg.
So the Chargers have a man on first with only one out.
Next step's going to be Caden Nowak from Grand Ledge,
Michigan, third baseman.
Number two.
He's a six foot, 185 Jr.
A homegrown man, and with only one out,
and a man on first, he's looking to put some damage.
Not much of a lead.
The pitch, swing and a pop-up.
Not too high, out to shortstop.
Easy catch, and the runner's back into first.
Two outs now.
swung at the first pitch
sometimes you need to be a little more patient
but suppose it looked good
next up is going to be
Rocco to doodoo leadoff hitter for the chargers
from Bartlett, Illinois
and he steps up with two outs and a man on first
looking to make something happen here
here's the pitch
pitch gets away from the catcher
but he does a nice job of stopping it
with the bare hand
nevertheless it's not in there
One ball, no strike.
Two outs, man on first.
As the sun recedes, again, a pickup attempt,
but that was a little ugly.
Kind of bounced in there, it rolled.
Well, there's been a lot of those tonight.
A lot of stealing, too.
Earlier, we saw two consecutive stolen bases on consecutive pitches.
The pitch, and he's going, runners going.
No throw by the catcher.
He just sticks it in his pocket, and they let him have it.
man is now on second scoring position he's got three stolen bases on the day so a man now in scoring position
with two balls and no strikes swing that one's going to go straight to the third baseman
and an easy play at first chargers go down pretty quietly four to two at the end of the sixth inning
you're listening to charges baseball and radio free hillsdale 101.7 fm

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and I run the Grammar Minute Instagram account.
If you haven't seen it, you should because there are pictures of llamas there.
I was on Instagram this afternoon, partly because very few people on that app are formal enough to use semicolens.
There's one particularly wrong way to use semicolons, and that is using them to separate items in a list.
I like chocolate milk, comma, hot chocolate, comma, and cocoa.
These items should be separated with commas, not semicolons.
The only time it's acceptable to separate list items with a semicolon is if the clauses
themselves have commas in them.
So, for example, I might say, I like sweet things like chocolate and hot cocoa, semicolon,
salty things like chips and guacambole, semicolon, and hot things like tacos.
Because each item in the list includes a comma, it's okay to separate these with semicolons.

Welcome back to Chargers baseball.
My partner, Jack Sullivan, has been indisposed for a minute,
had some things to take care of, unfortunately.
If you're just tuning in, it's the top of the seventh inning.
Chargers 4, Lakers, two visitors from Grand Valley,
have scratched across two runs, eight hits and one error.
While the Chargers underhitting with only seven hits,
but they've had more runs, and that's what matters at the end of the day.
No errors for the Chargers.
Brandon Scott's going to take the mound again for the Chargers.
Kyle Knott steps in, the lefty.
And he looks at the first one.
And it's going to be ball one, not all that close.
They've been very patient today at the plate.
I've seen a lot of waiting, and it's worked.
They've drawn out a couple walks, I think four or five walks tonight.
And a sort of half-hearted swing late there.
I wonder if that bat's a late.
little too heavy for him. It looked a little slow. But one ball, one strike, no outs. Top of the seventh.
Chargers four to two as the sun comes back out. Swing and a miss. Out of fastball. Heater down the middle.
One ball and two strikes now.
Throw. Swing and a miss again. Foul tip in the catcher's mitt. He's going to toss it around the horn. Well, he tosses it in the third base.
but unfortunately luckily for the uh chargers that's not one that matters not a great sign though
not a good showing welcome back jack how are you i'm doing great you missed uh you missed a great time
the chargers got out of that fifth inning with a uh brain and scott came in one pitch double play
and that one swung on down the line it's going to land fair fair into the corner again he's digging for
two he's rounding two that same spot three here's the front of
Safe at third.
Throw was in time, but maybe a little off the mark
and then allowed them to get that play.
Kind of bounced in there that takes your Velo down quite a bit.
Absolutely.
They've had some good luck in that corner.
That's their second triple down the right field line.
You know, as a right fielder, there's not a whole lot you can do about that.
I mean, that's about the longest throw you can have.
That's tough to make that, but I think as soon as he came off the bat,
he was rounding first.
He never slowed down.
I think he was thinking three the whole time.
And so here we go.
No balls, no strikes.
Swung on, fouled down the line.
It's going to be out of play.
No balls in one strike, one out,
and a man on third for the Lakers.
As the shadows take over the park again.
The pitch.
Low and inside.
It's in the dirt.
One ball, one strike, count is easy.
even now. One out. Man on third falling that that triple.
They've had a lot of runners in scoring position, but you know, they've stranded a lot of them.
I think that's one thing that the charges are doing really well. They've been leaving a lot of men on base.
That one's hit, and it's going to be foul down the third baseline. That could have spelled trouble.
One ball and two strikes, one out. And here we go. So we got, as you said, Sam, one out.
We got one and two. Chargers are still up four to two, but a man on third here in the top of the seven.
Grand Valley State Lakers trying to get back in this game.
Here's the delivery.
That's belted into the gap.
That could be two bases.
Oh, and he misses the catch.
That's definitely going to be two.
A run's going to score.
He's going three.
Two triples in the inning.
He's going home.
Oh, he's staying.
Pitcher did a great job.
He's pumped up.
He's pumped up.
Great job backing up third by the pitcher.
But that's two triples in one inning.
You don't get to see that every day.
Well, the.
Grand Valley scratches one across the board for the first time since the first inning.
We're now in the seventh, so the scoreless streak ends, but the Chargers maintain a three-to-four lead.
Ten hits for the Lakers, one error.
Grand Valleys had four triples this game.
The pitch outside.
You don't get a treat like that every day.
Absolutely.
And so here we got four to three.
The Lakers only down by one, but they got.
got a man on third with only one out, so a lot of things can get that tying run across the plate here on the top of the seventh.
The set, the delivery, little inside, and so the count is going to go to 2 and O here.
Hillsdale looking to maintain this lead.
If you're just catching up with us, we've got Charger Baseball taken out of the Grand Valley State Lakers.
We're at the top of the 7th, 2-0, 1-out, man-on-third.
Hillsdale up by 1.
That one's popped down to the third baseman.
easy catch with the sunshine in his eyes
two outs you know that's a really big out there's no sacrifices
now absolutely you're gonna need a base knock to get that man home
from third pitcher can just face on
or focus on getting this batter out exactly
pitcher can get back into his element start throwing strikes in there
get this guy out get the fellas back in the dugout
here we go the set the delivery a little outside
one and oh that runner on third's looking a little jumpy
Hillsdale held the Lakers scoreless for five consecutive innings,
though they put up one here in the top of the seventh.
A little outside again.
Oh, that's a strike catches the outside part of the plate,
and so we've got a one-one count.
Great framing by the catcher there.
Absolutely.
Underappreciated skill, in my opinion.
Absolutely, you know, it's getting to be a little...
That one comes inside.
It's now two balls and one strike.
Two outs and a man on third.
In the upper levels, it's starting to get run it obsolete a little bit as they're ushering in the era of challenging balls and strikes.
Of course, not a thing here in Division II baseball yet.
Pitch, well outside.
A lot of movement on that.
If you can just get that in the zone, it could be pretty filthy.
Yeah, those ones, you want to start them on the edge of the zone and then tail out so they're unhittable.
You can't be starting those on the edge of the zone because they're not going to be tempting to the batters to hit.
Here's the pitch.
Swing and a miss.
Full count.
Two out.
Great opportunity for the Chargers here to get out of this inning.
Absolutely.
Payoff pitch here incoming.
Pitcher comes set.
Leg comes up the payoff delivery.
And a foul ball will keep this inning going.
Keep the at-bed alive.
He did a good job of just getting his hands out,
getting a piece on the ball, staying alive.
It was a little too close to the zone for him to take.
But he did a great job of fouling that off.
Absolutely.
That bad alive.
making the pitcher work just a little bit hard.
Absolutely not sure when the Bee Gees showed up with all this stand alive out here, huh Sam?
Outside, he walked him anyway.
Runners on the corners, two outs.
Brandon Scott came in the fifth inning,
and in one pitch eliminated bases loaded jam that he inherited.
Here he's given up two triples and a walk, amounting to one run.
Two outs, runners on the corners.
and here we are
here's the delivery
and he will take strike one
and so again
chargers just need to get the batter
we've got two outs made on first and third
chargers up by one four to three here on the top of the seventh
the set the delivery
and a nice slider
swing and a miss
so owing two sam he's got a couple of pitches to play with
let's see what he does here what do you think you think you might
Throw in the dirt a little outside, or you think he'll come into the zone, try to get strike three here?
You know, I think with a couple off-speed pitches, and he's up in the count, O and two, he can go just about anywhere he wants.
And a ground ball to the second baseman stays down on it, throws it to first, and that's the third out, folks.
He did a great job of staying on top of that.
He almost bobbled it, but he had enough time, kept his body there, great out to get out of the jam.
Three to four, Chargers are up.

Welcome back to Chargers baseball, folks.
He just heard about chocolate chip cookies.
And speaking of which, I encourage you all to come down to Handmaid after this,
my personal sponsor for this game.
You might be able to meet me and Jack there.
See our beautiful radio faces down there.
The score is four to three Hillsdale Chargers,
beating the Grand Valley State Lakers.
Lakers have put up 10 hits.
Chargers only seven, but that's not the column that matters, is it, Jack?
No, absolutely. It's all about that run column.
When you add them up the end of the game, not counting in hits, errors, anything like that,
it's all about add them up, who's got the most runs after nine.
It's about getting feet across that big rubber diamond.
Absolutely.
Whoever puts more feet across that diamond wins the game.
Absolutely.
Everything else is just a mere careless whisper.
Everything else is not but shadows.
Jacob Salis steps in.
Oh, first.
Rips it up.
the middle and there we go. We got a lead off
hit from the Chargers. First
pitch of the inning. Screaming rope
straight over second base.
Base hit. And here
comes Big Bad
Will Shannon.
Big Bad Wolf himself. He's at
a great game so far.
He's at an RBI or two.
And so here we got.
With a great situation, man on first, no outs
he's looking to do some damage. First baseman
adjusts his helmet out the
delivery we'll take strike one in there for strike one that was an emphatic call by the ump we could hear that from up here even through our headsets
absolutely so here we go pitcher comes at oh one bottom of the seventh hillsdale up four to three
and pickoff move over to first we've seen a lot of pickoffs absolutely just got to check in on the runner
make sure they're doing okay make sure he's not being too mischievous over there absolutely now we have
seen a lot of stolen bases today a lot of creative
Great base running.
A couple goofs.
The Chargers ended a tough one.
Oh, Screamer back up the bag.
Going to result in a double play.
Double play.
Pitcher barely got out of the way, but the second baseman did a great job to get up there.
That was looking like a base hit, looking like runners on the quarters.
But he did a great job moving his feet, hustling, getting to that ball, flipping it to the shortstop.
Really clean, really clean.
So that brings up left-handed Jeff Landis.
He's from Midland, Michigan.
Number 20.
The pitch.
And he's going to take a strike one.
A little away.
I thought that might have been a ball,
but that's why I'm not in the black uniform.
Landis has already scored today after a walk.
The pitch, swing and a miss.
It looked like he was swinging a garden hose.
out there. That was a couple inches off the plate.
No balls. Two strikes, two outs.
The pitch, swing.
Shot to shortstop.
Gobbled up. And an easy throw to first.
Chargers go quickly and quietly.
Not before getting a hit, but again, that's not what matters.
We're going to a break, folks. You're listening to Chargers baseball.
101.7, radio-free Hillsdale.
Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen.
Today we talk about the origin of the seventh inning stretch.
There are two commonly told origin stories.
The first has to do with President William Howard Taft.
When he was president in 1910, he threw the first pitch at an opening game in Washington, D.C.
Following the top half of the seventh inning, rumor has that the Taft stood up from his seat to stretch.
The crowd thought he was leaving and stood out of respect.
The second myth centers around a small spree.
school in New York, whose coach and also the Catholic school's prefect of discipline, saw that the
crowd was going a bit stir-crazy. So, in the middle of the seventh inning, he called for a
timeout so that spectators could stretch. The game then carried on as normal. No one knows for sure which,
if either of these stories are true. But regardless, the tradition has stuck around for many years.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
And welcome back to Linda and Glenda Hill Stadium. If you're not a lot of you,
You're just tuning in.
We've got some Charger Baseball here for you, going into the top of the eighth inning.
Hillsdale leads four to three.
And here is back on the defensive side of the dish.
And the Grand Valley State Lakers will look to get some runs as they're running out of time, Sam, to even this thing up.
You know, they're running out of time, but they strung together a couple of triples last inning.
Put one across the board for the first time since the first.
It's still a close ball game.
I think it's anyone's.
You know, chargers have failed to put one up the last two innings.
Do you think it's another momentum shift?
We've seen a couple of those so far.
You know, now the Lakers got some momentum coming into this inning.
They scored one this inning.
Do you think they're going to be able to put one across?
You know, it's tough to say.
I think it all comes down to how well they're seeing the ball.
And if they can string together a couple of hits.
Yeah, well, they're on their 8-9-1 for this inning.
The pitch.
comes in and it's a ball low and away one ball no strikes one out here in the top of the eighth you know
they are running out of time um but two innings i've seen it happen four to three hillsdale as the
pitch comes down another one outside two balls no strike and one out
the out the lakers are actually stranded 10 runners this game so the charges have been doing a great job
of, you know, runners are inevitable in most games, right?
But the Chargers have been doing a really great job of getting out of jams.
They've left the bases loaded twice.
You know, that doesn't happen every day.
Runners happen pretty much every day.
It's not every day you get to leave the bases loaded twice.
It's been an interesting game so far.
Here's the pitch.
That one's going to be in there.
Counts even at two apiece with no outs in the top of the eighth.
The number eight hitter for the Lakers.
Chargers are looking to hold on to their slim,
lead the pitch swung on bounced to second base scooped up and thrown to first nice routine play to
get that first out of the inning settle in after a little bit of a rocky last last top of the
seventh rocky frame indeed but you know not much more you can ask for for the first batter and get
them out absolutely Chad Stevens is our new pitcher for the chargers he hails from westland
Michigan.
He's 6-2 and a daunting 220 pounds.
Let me tell you, I wouldn't want to run into this guy when he's mad.
Absolutely.
You know what? He's looking mad.
It looks like a man on a mission to me.
No balls, no strikes.
One out as the pitcher wheels and deals swung on.
Sorry, not swung on, but it's a strike nonetheless.
Chad Stevens out there rocking a pretty sweet blue glove.
if he got that from a sponsorship deal
The pitch
Nice velocity coming out of him
Is throwing it with a lot of gusto
That's right
One ball
One strike
One out
Nobody on the sun's out again
Pitch
In there, bobbled a little bit by the catcher
But that's going to be a ball too
Two and one
He's batting from the shadow
again while the pitcher's in the sunshine. Shadows are lengthening across the field.
Two balls and only one strike.
The pitch. And that one's going to be in there. Two balls, two strikes.
The lead-off hitter waits for the Lakers. He's looking to, you know, come into bat, into the plate with a runner on deck.
fly ball out to right field wheels on that man dives and he missed it it's on the ground that's going to be a double he holds up at second as the ball comes in
you know a lot of a lot of balls hit out that way have been triples tonight we've seen two of those already and the leadoff hitter's going to get his wish
Connor Schumann gets a runner on second comes in remember that monstrous towering home run in the first that
put GVSU up 1-0,
ended up scoring another in that inning.
We've got 4-3 here, Hillsdale,
top of the 8th, man on second, one out.
We've already seen the power from this guy today.
He's definitely looking to do it again.
If he can hit another one, that gives them the lead.
It's currently four to three chargers.
The tying run on second base,
go ahead run in the plate.
And here we are.
O-1, one out.
Pitcher comes set.
Healthy lead at second, playing with him.
The delivery and a little high, that's going to be even the count to one-in-one.
You know what I'm really liking is I'm liking this velocity.
You could hear the snap of the catcher's glove from up here.
Absolutely.
And here we are.
Come set again.
Man on second, taking a healthy lead, jumping around, trying to get his attention.
delivery and fouled off that's going to take the count to one and two one strike away from getting the
second out of the inning jack we've been kind of harping on it today but that second out when you got
runners on base getting that second out is probably the tipping point so crucial between between
you know runs across the board and getting out of an inning absolutely because that allows you
just focus on the batter like we've said the pitch up high a little bit count evens two and two
One out with a man on second.
Lead-off hitter in the box.
He's already had a dinger today.
It was a monstrous tater out to left field.
Come set.
Here comes the pitch.
Big lead.
And almost hit him.
Almost.
Did a nice job of getting out of it.
He probably could have let that hit him and gotten away with it if you ask me.
Yeah.
But, you know, I don't think that's what he's trying to do.
He's trying to flex his muscles a little bit.
show his power. Full count, one out, healthy lead over at second. The spectacle band on the
bound. Pitches and strikeout. He struck him out. He thought that was a ball for expressing a little
discontentment with the umpiring here. He was not too pleased. No unpleasant words though,
so that's what we like to hear. Oh, bad. The fire's coming out a little bit. Pinch runner at second
A bit of a phenotypical change out there.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
I mean, you think about how crucial that run is a tying run and we're on the top of the eighth, Sam.
They've got 11 hits.
Chargers only have eight, but have been more efficient thus far.
I've been more efficient indeed.
Like we said, they left 10 on base.
Grand Valley State, you're saying?
Grand Valley State has left 10 on base.
Three of those were walks in one inning.
Shortstop looks like he's thinking about a pickoff attempt.
High fly ball out to center field.
Centerfielders camping under it.
It's going to be the third out of the inning.
And the chargers will go back to work here in the bottom of the eighth, up by one,
seeing if they can't close out this game.
We're going to take a break.

Welcome back to 101.1.7 FM, Radio Free Hillsdale.
This is Chargers Baseball.
This is Sam Wallace with my buddy, Jack Sullivan.
Chargers Baseball is up four to three.
It's Grand Valley State Lakers.
They've been out hit 11 to 8.
Lakers are stranded a whole lot.
They've stranded about 10 or 11 to 8 to 11 now.
It's been a lot.
One error for the guests.
None for us.
As the first pitch comes into Joe Hardenberg,
and it's a strike called.
No balls in one strike.
And here we are, Sam.
Bottom of the 8th, you really like to see Hillsdale
get a couple extra insurance runs going into the 9th.
You really would.
And that's one shot out into...
out into the gap they're still running that's going to drop it's going to be two bags
standing standing double you know they call him they call him johnny two bags for a reason
bill mallard is going to step up into the plate under three and he's uh he's found himself in a pretty
nice situation he'll still still be up by one the lakers have been crawling up a little bit
putting up across a run in the seventh none in the eighth but uh
couple of hits.
Tell you what, Sam,
leadoff,
double, a lot of ways
to get that guy home
with a way no outs.
A lot of ways to make this work.
No outs.
Man on second for Will Millard.
The pitch.
He shows Buns.
There's one of those ways
we were talking about
getting that guy over to third, huh?
To third end.
Not called strike.
No contact.
He offered at it, though,
apparently.
No, it's ball one.
Ball one.
One ball, no strikes.
The appeal did not go through.
And they got him.
They're going to go to third.
And he's out at third.
Oh, no.
Beautiful toss to third.
So he bunted.
He's going to prove costly.
He bunted.
Runner from second went to third.
They say he got him out.
I don't know about that, Sam.
I thought he got his hand in there.
That was, I don't know about that call.
You know, we see everything through charges colored glasses.
You know, at the end of the day.
Not me. I'm perfectly objective. Perfectly objective.
Now, there's a reason we're up here and not in the black uniforms.
But now there's a man on first and one out.
As the leadoff doubles squandered a little bit.
It's a decent idea, you know.
But great play by the third baseman there.
Way to get the tag down nice.
One ball, no strikes, one out.
There's a man on first for the charges.
Danny Passano is up.
The pitch. It gets away from him. The runner's going to second. No throw from the catcher. He's in safely.
So the charges get right back to where they were. Man on second.
Lefty in the box against a righty.
Forrest Gump. Run, Forrest, run.
I like these scoreboard shows. They remind me of a bowling alley. I think we might need something.
Someone to come in and revamp that a little bit. The pitch. The pitch also gets away from him.
Runner thought about it, but I guess he wasn't confident enough in his wheels.
Third baseman did a good job of getting over there quickly.
But now it's three balls, no strikes, one out.
What are you doing in this situation?
Are you swinging?
You know he's going to try to put it in the zone, or do you try to take the free pitch?
I tell you what, it's got to be your perfect pitch, and there we go.
We got ball four, so we got man on first and second, only one out.
So the Chargers in a good position, a couple chances at a hit and hopefully get something home.
Yeah, with one out, you got some room to play.
with got a lead and you know if this inning falls through you still get your defense in the top of
the knife but you know what i'm telling i'll tell you it probably feels very good to be on the in the navy
blue today with a one run lead two men on erin jasek jacic how do you say that erin jassick on
on the plate the pitch right down the middle that's going to be strike one he takes it zero balls one
one strike. Run is on first and second here in the bottom of the eighth as the sun comes out once again.
The pitch. Another one down the middle. He takes another one. What do you think he's waiting for out there?
I tell you what, he's probably just looking for his pitch, but the problem is you only get so many, right?
You only get three of them. And here we go, he's going to try to be staying alive here. O and two, one out.
Defense mode.
that one's just out of the zone caught a break there nice slider you know it was very tempting but
that was a great eye to recognize the pitch and hold off one ball two strikes only one out
runs on first and second for the chargers the pitch and another one outside pitcher didn't look
too pleased with that yeah he's doing a good job uh the batter that is staying in the count and
working it back to two and two working it back even very big
pitcher I think he thought he won't need that call.
Here comes the pitch.
That's inside, so he works to count full.
Down 0 and 2, and he works the count full.
That's very nice, very well done with runners on first and second.
You've got to expect they'll probably be in motion here, you know,
because the double plays in order.
We'll see.
Only one out.
Definitely jumping, and he draws a walk.
Down O and 2, and he draws a walk.
And four consecutive pitches.
Really nice at bat from the mayor and J-Sig.
And so Sam might tell you what, big, big, big situation of the ball game here, top of the eighth, or excuse me, bottom of the eighth.
Chargers looking to add some insurance runs.
Basis loaded, only up by one, four to three.
Faces loaded, one out, looking to get at least one of those runners home going into the top of the ninth with a little cushion.
Yeah, definitely trying to scratch across one.
Hopefully put up a crooked number for this inning.
Zach Kent from Centerville, Ohio, steps up to the plate.
17. And you know, we were a little disappointed when that bun didn't quite work out our way.
But, you know, now the bases are loaded. It's about as good as you can ask for. One out.
We may see a pitching change here. Lakers are going to meet on the mound.
Are they going to bring someone in? What do you think? Well, tell me this, Jack. What would you do?
Would you bring in a new pitcher here? I don't know. That's tough to say. I'm not sure if they have anybody warm.
Looks like there may be a little action in the bullpen, not sure.
Definitely some activity over there.
They're going to take their time over here on the mound.
This is a big situation.
They can't really afford to give up much more here.
Yeah, so no new pitcher, Sam.
So they're going to stick with what they've got.
Again, we've got bases loaded, one out.
If you're just tuning in, you're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale.
101.7, Chargers leading four to three here in the bottom of the eighth.
Base is loaded, one out.
no balls no strikes hey we're not we're not going to break yeah we're not we're not going to break
yeah yeah yeah faces loaded one out don't worry folks we're staying right here we're not going anywhere
you can't get rid of us that and does a good job of keeping that ball in front of them the catcher
that is and so we've got one and oh bases loaded one out hillsdale up by one sam
what do you think well i'm thinking obviously this is a great situation
situation. He's up in the count right now. That one's going to be inside ball two. I mean,
with a two and no count, you've got to be thinking a walk drives in a run here, sets it up nicely for the
rest of the team. Absolutely two and oh. Batters still batting from the shade. Two and oh, the pitch.
And that one misses inside as well. It's now three and oh. Sam, we're only one ball away from
Hillsdale taking a two run lead. It's a difficult spot for the pitcher out there right now. And
Really difficult. You know, you don't wonder what they talked about if he's still missing the zone.
The pitch.
Strike one.
That one's in there for a strike. So count moves three and one.
Still one out. Base is juiced here in the bottom of the eighth.
Hillsdale trying to add to their lead after it was cut in half in the seventh inning.
One out. Three and one count. One out. Three and one. Here's the pitch. Swung on. Bow ball.
count is now full with only one out and the base is loaded.
Zach Kent doing a great job in this at bat.
Looked at three tempting pitches that all missed the zone.
Looked at one down the middle and then found one off.
So I'm really liking this at bat so far.
He's making this pitcher work.
You can tell this pitcher's already fatigued.
The pitch swung on and fouled again.
So Sam, we're staying right there.
Full count again.
Three, two, one out.
Bases loaded.
Hillsdale up by one.
got to get at least one runner across, right?
It's absolutely mandatory.
You know, they've done a great job of leaving the Lakers stranded on base.
He can't be doing the same thing.
The pitch, swung on another foul ball.
Again, he's going to doing a great job making this pitcher work.
This pitcher gave up, you know, he thought he was doing pretty well with one out and one on in the early part of the inning.
But he's since gotten the bases loaded.
You know, he wants to get out of this jam with only with no runs across.
but he's making him work for it.
I've got to wonder if that pitcher's getting fatigue.
The pickoff attempted second throws a little offline,
so he gets in there safe and happy.
Got to be careful with that pickoff move.
Any sort of errant throw can spell bad news for the Lakers.
Shortstop had to jump to catch that one.
Really dangerous position.
The last thing you want to do is give up an unearned run in this situation.
The pitch swung on a ground ball to second.
This could be two.
Out at second, out at first.
and an opportunity snuffed out by the Lakers.
That's disappointing for the Chargers.
But regardless, they go into the top of the 9th with a 4-3 lead.
You're listening to Chargers baseball in Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7.
We'll see you then.

And welcome back to Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium here in Hillsdale, Michigan.
The sun is out and we're headed to the top of the night, Hillsdale Chargers, with a four to three,
lead here looking
to cap off. An
eventful victory.
Eventful,
the four triples for the opposing
team, 11 hits, only three runs.
You know, the charge has been doing a great
job, leaving those men stranded
on base. The defense has been
locked down. They've had a lot of great
creative plays. A lot of tough
plays. You remember, we'll take
you back to the, he was the third
inning. They
missed a double play.
At first, the man got there, but they caught a man
between second and third.
That was just a beautiful play to get out of the gym.
Absolutely, and here, Lakers are nearing, getting close to being out of time, only down by one.
But here we got number 14, Ryan Dykstra to lead it off, left-handed hitter.
Ground ball, high chopper to the shortstop, throwing over to first, got him, one out.
The Chargers, two outs away from a victory.
throwing it around the horn.
Yeah, two outs away from a really well-fought victory.
You know, we don't want to count our chickens before their hatch.
Absolutely.
But, you know, giving up two in the first.
They've only given up one, the consecutive seven frames.
I think they're looking really locked in.
Up steps, number three, Jonas Goldrensen.
That first pitch, a little wild going to the backstop.
We got one and O, one out, Hillsdale leading four to three,
in the top of the ninth
here's the one and
no delivery
and swinging a miss one and one
Hillsdale looking to cap off
a nice victory
here on a beautiful
Hillsdale Wednesday
the pitch
tap her up to the pitcher
takes the first and he's out
two outs
two down in the top of the ninth
little rambunction over there
in the Hillsdale dugout
realizing that they're just one out away from what would be a very nice victory over the Grand Valley State Lakers.
Yeah, that's really true.
I mean, one out away from a well-fought victory, this is a really good team.
To get out of here with a nice, tight victory would be great.
That first pitch gets to the backstop.
That's his second one to the backstop this inning.
Nobody on base, though, so it's really not too much of a problem.
You don't have to worry about those.
Not that big of a deal.
So here we go.
We got one out, or I'm excuse me, two outs, one and O rather.
The 1-0 pitch.
and 2 and 0.
So needs to come in for a strike here, but it's okay.
2.0.
And the Chargers looking to polish up, as I said, a nice victory.
We're in the top of the knife.
The pitch, he offered at it.
Nice strike.
It's in there anyway.
We've got 2 and 1.
Hillsdale up 4 to 3.
2 out, top of the 9th.
Here's the pitch.
Rips it through the hole between first and second.
Alfeelor gets it in.
Runner will stay at first,
so don't go away just yet.
The Chargers still with some work to do.
Man on first.
Two outs. Top of the night.
Brendan Guchardo.
And up steps.
Up steps.
Brendan Guchardo.
Ball one.
Pitch is a little outside there.
He's been missing the zone a little bit this inning.
You know, I think he's got a, I think he's got to, you know, focus, get those balls in the zone, get some swings and misses.
And there we go.
We got a strike.
Got a strike one in one, two outs.
And Grand Valley State down to the last two strikes.
Hillsdale.
They got a man on first due to their 12th hit of the game.
Can you imagine that?
12 hits, only three runs.
Yeah, that's just inefficiency there.
The last time you saw such crooked numbers like that.
I don't know.
Hillsdale, Grand Valley State, the coach would have been very happy if you had asked him about 12 hits before the game,
but it's only resulted in three runs, as you said.
Here's the one-two delivery.
Outside.
By the catcher.
Grand Valley State, down to their last strike here.
One man on, top of nine.
Hillsdale up four, three, two balls, two strikes, two outs.
Come set.
Here's the delivery.
Strike three.
He got him.
Game over.
Chargers win, four to three.
A beautiful game by the Chargers.
The crowd goes wild.
And we've got a nice little light show going out in the outfield.
A beautiful new stadium here.
And Hillsdale defends it with a nice win over Grand Valley State Lakers,
four to three. Sam, give me your thoughts.
Really nice win.
You know, shaky start.
and it was just lights out after that.
They put up some nice numbers in the middle frames
and just held on.
You know, it was really great defense, really great pitching.
A strikeout to end it, always a great feeling.
Great pitching in those ends, in those end frames.
You know, two or three pitchers come in and just do their job.
They got out of a lot of jams.
Let's talk about the numbers on the board.
Three runs, 12 hits, one inning, or one error for the guest.
Again, just inefficiency, like you said, 12 hits.
They had four or five walks.
That's a lot of base runners with only three left on.
You know, they left double digits on the base.
I think that's just really spectacular defense
and really good situational defense by the Chargers to get out of their.
Chargers put up four runs and only nine hits.
No errors.
Not a ton of walks either.
You know, that's a fair amount left on base too.
but you know what? At the end of the day, we were less inefficient than them, I'll say that.
Absolutely. Great analysis, Sam. Well, that's going to be all for us today. I'm Jack Sullivan.
And I'm Sam Wallace. You've been listening to Chargers Baseball. If you want to meet and greet us, we will be at Handmade in approximately 30 minutes.
