Starting point is 00:00:00 And welcome. You are listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM Charger baseball. We have an out-of-league contest today between your Hillsdale Chargers and the traveling GVSU Lakers. Yeah, GVSU led by a couple stars, including our very own Logan Vanekin vort's brother. Yes, former Hillsdale Charger, All-Conference football player and his brother is a pitcher and infielder does it both for the number 21. 22 ranked Grand Valley State Lakers who play in the Gliac Conference. Of course, the Chargers playing in the G-MAC and a little out-of-conference game on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. A little cold, but starting to heat up. So are the Chargers at home after winning four straight against Lake Erie
Starting point is 00:00:47 this past weekend, which was a big series sweep for them. Yeah, all really, really close games. You got to call one of those games. And then I'll walk off, hop-up fly. runner from third tags in and scores. Yeah, pretty exciting game. And the Chargers mixing things up a little bit with their lineup with most of the same guys. But on the bump today, the lefty Brendan Smith, the freshman from Indiana getting the start going up against first.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Got Evan Morrison. Lefty, lefty, first pitch, letting him know inside for ball one. Yeah, making him back up. I like that right there. Make him know that you're there. Especially lefty, lefty. It's tougher to hit. Morrison playing shortstop today for the Lakers. The 1-0. In there, great speed there, ball high, but a lot of power on that fastball. I hear it up here. Yeah, I mean, it's hitting that glove hard. That hand's got to hurt already.
Starting point is 00:01:44 John Hunter, the second catcher on the roster, him and Millard share duties. The 2-0. Inside, ball three early. Smith's giving up a 4.91 ERA with four appearances. Only three. 3.2 innings pitched up until this point. Got his hands full against number 22 GV. The 3-0 on its way in there. Strike 1. Finds it there on Morrison. We'll see if he's starting and they're just going to go through all the pitchers
Starting point is 00:02:12 because it's a non-conference game. Very interesting to the strategy here from the coaches. Three balls, one strike. Pitch on its way inside again. Morrison will take a bag. Or we'll see if he tries to go the whole game, see how far we can push him. to push a newer guy, younger guy.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Trying to give him some field experience more than those three innings. He's pitched well. He's got the fourth lowest ERA on the team. And that is only his fourth walk given up to the season. Now up, batting the two-hole, another lefty, Ryan Dreska. Throws back to get Morrison there. Almost got him. Took a healthy lead.
Starting point is 00:02:48 I'm assuming he has a lead-off hitter. He likes to take off. Kind of a short guy. Lead-off hitter gets on with the walk. Oh, Hunter throws back again. I think he got him. he did not what a throwback again by hunter morrison kind of toying with him and now he's got no opportunity to throwback ever throwing twice yep and the lefty matchup right there looking right at
Starting point is 00:03:08 first base it's really easy to throw back the oh no one out run around first in there for ball one as we said the left fielder dress got up here another lefty interesting to see the charger starting a lefty and then gv countering with two lefties normally not something you like to do but They're good hitters, so that's why they're at the top of the order. Maybe that's the strategy, though, for Hillsdale was we know that these guys start off a couple lefties. This is their normal starting lineups. Now we're going to throw out this pitcher who is a lefty. The one-o-win there for a strike now, 1-1.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Nobody out, zero-zero ball game. Runner on first is Morrison. The 1-1 on its way throws back to first again. Laman really trying to help him out and get him, but can't seem to. Morrison ready to take off. Hunter had a throw-out last game behind the plate, see what he can do if Morrison does. take off zero zero here early the one one on its way again from hunter looks back throws back did he get him he did no safe it looked like you though i'm safe i mean it's real close yeah wow it is it's hard
Starting point is 00:04:11 angle from up here but hunter obviously trying to get one quick out as a young pitcher trying to get out of the inning but can't get morrison now the one one on its way in there strike two great pitch a lot of power as we said now you're ahead in the count you can throw whatever throw some off speed throw something lefty sliding all the way across the plate trying to make him swing the one two here from hunter gets a sign smith throws back again taking his time that one seemed less like he's trying to get him out and more like let's keep him close to that back right there yeah you want him to keep close because low pitch here you can double them up two outs move on to their three hitter the one two smith takes his time six on the pitch clock heads home down the first first
Starting point is 00:04:56 base line foul ripped there by Driscoe very much on top of that one a little bit too early actually hitting down that first base line look to be an off speed as Smith is throwing some great speed steps off the mound really taking this time patient approach after walking the first guy good to see him settle in here the one two yeah good at the pitch clock though making him go Smith from the stretch great slider but it's going to get through and that's going to send morrison to third survey to hutchinson the throw into third not in time runners on the corners with no out almost missed the bag there at third overslitt kind of left his back foot barely on the bag i mean he could have got there standing up but he almost got himself out by sliding now up number three jonas gulbranson the first baseman six three senior from aurora illinois
Starting point is 00:05:47 now smith has a tough matchup righty lefty no outs runners on the corners got to get an out here. Zero, zero, still, one hit, one walk. Gold Branson is their best hitter. First pitch fouled off his leg. Kind of took it there. It looked painful, fouled it off that inside foot. Nice.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Maybe he hit off of his little sliding, or, uh, protective ankle, ankle gear right there. Probably does it a lot. You know one now, Smith, runners on the corners, no down. Smith gets the sign. Heads home from the stretch, great curveball in there for a ball. All high, wow, looked like a strike from up here. Just a little high, but great action on that slider. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:32 So go back to go Branson, though. 123 had bats, 44 hits, batting 358. Wow. Nine whole guns in the season, yeah. The 1-1 on its way. Another curve ball. This one's taken deep to left field. Tough read on it, not going to get there over the wall for a ground roll double.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Tough read there for Figman, who doesn't normally play out there in the left. That is normally Tyler Sowers, another one of the freshmen. Fickman getting the opportunity as another freshman from Palm City, Florida. Just got a tough read on that one, bounces over the wall. Runners on second and third now, no outs. Coach is going to have a mound visit now. Yeah, Sowers is still batting. Guy who's not batting today, senior Zach Kent,
Starting point is 00:07:11 who's played very, very well for the Chargers. Actually, their best batter statistically, him and Tyler Sowers both batting 350. Zach Kent having a little more games, batting 120 that bats. And four home runs, leaves the Chargers and home runs. Yeah, Sowers was huge in that walkoff. Overtime victory against Lake Erie having a huge triple. And hey man, Kent not hitting today. Definitely something that is interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I mean, those are two of your best guys, even a senior and a freshman. So see what the Chargers can do with not their normal lineup, trying to get some rest, trying to get some new guys in this outer conference game. It should be interesting. Yeah, I mean, it's an out-conference game. It's the one thing you can do. You can throw some new guys. I mean, it's a long season you want everyone to be ready deep for a push.
Starting point is 00:07:54 But now you got runners on second and third, no-out. and up the four-hole hitter will be Guerrero, their DH. First pitch, he attacks it to left field. It's going to fall. One runner's going to score. Second one's going to get the brakes. Runners on the corners, and it is two nothing early. And GV's meat of the lineup.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Doesn't get any easier here with number seven, Logan Van, nope. Aiden Van, sorry, close friend Logan. Brother of Logan Vanning and Ford. Yes, Aidan. Got all the. height in the family. Yeah, he did. Aiden standing in at 6-1, LV, not so much. Won't disclose that final height, but two nothing game here. Runners on the corner, zero, pitch and a bunt from Van Inconvort goes foul. Strike one for Smith, who's just trying to settle in here,
Starting point is 00:08:48 get his first out, and once you get that first out, you can kind of close things down, but Guerrero, both the big hits have been the left field kind of pulling that off speed, kind of leaving it hanging a little bit. That's the first out of the game and the last out of the game. was the hardest two to get. The O-1, runners on the corners, no outs, two nothing lead for GV. Just off the plate ball one. As we said, Brinsmith, not a lot of pitching experience early in this year, but only a freshman.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Getting his chance in a tough spot against Grand Valley. The 1-1. Another off-speed, high-fly ball to right field. Hutchinson gets a read on it, he's going to have to throw it home. Cut off by Lehman and another run scores on the RBI. Seck fly from Van Inkingport. Yeah, you weren't getting that. now and home, too deep in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Just good to keep the runner on first base there. Yeah, similar one that Hutchinson hit himself and scored on, or scored Tenoed on to win the game against Lake Erie. Now up number five, the catcher Nick Christick. Runner on first now. Double play gets out of the inning, three nothing lead early from GV. The O.O. Smith from the stretch gets one on the outer corner there.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Nice pitch in for strike one. Yeah, it helps. I mean, GV is one of the best teams in Division 2. Rank number 18, and obviously you can see it early here. One strike here, the 0-1 on its way in there again. Double play ball to Jassick. He'll turn it to Porowski back to Lehman. Not in time.
Starting point is 00:10:20 A great dig there from Lehman, but just a little too much speed from the catcher, Chrissick. But a great job to turn it from Jasek to Porowski. Just unable to get him. That's a huge pitch there. Week contact, one of the first week contacts hits he seems Smith. Trying to settle in, and now he's going to go against the center field or Thielen. Yeah, and it was a great job scooping it right there because the outer walls on this field are huge. It goes past you.
Starting point is 00:10:46 You're getting an extra base, maybe two bases. Run around first, two outs. One attempt there, pulls a back ball one. One thing that we said in the couple of games I've watched, at least with the charges, is that middle infield is great defensively. Prowski made a couple of huge plays last weekend. JASIC, a great defender, Tenoota on the corner, and Lehman can pick everything. So tough to get it by them.
Starting point is 00:11:04 The 1-0 on its way in there. Going to roll one foul past the layman. First base line, 1-1 now. As we said, two outs here. Top of the first 3-0-0 lead for GV. And this out-of-conference affair. Yeah, and it was that heart of the lineup. I mean, 2-3-4, or 1-2-3-4, all getting hits in a row.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Yeah, three hits for three runs. One-1-1-now for Smith. One ball and strike. Another bun-int-time. Be able to pull it back. It's their center. fielder. Caden Thielen, freshman
Starting point is 00:11:40 lefty from Portland, Michigan. Local guy, just outside of Lansing. I'm surprised their buttoned them with two outs. Yeah, must have good speed. 2-1 on its way. Pass Laman there. Great diving effort gets by him. That's going to send the runner to third.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Going to get by Hutchinson almost. He's going to slide in safely to third. Great job there. Great effort from Laman and try to cut that off. Couldn't get his mid on it. It's going to be a single, and it's going to move runners on the corners once again for number 17 sim jack yeah really was an athletic play from you know a guy you usually don't see field and hit balls first baseman but cutoff guy just throw it into him but a very
Starting point is 00:12:20 athletic play and almost got his hand on that one stemming up here the o two outs runners on the corners three nothing smith trying to get out of the inning here ball will no strike on the inner half definitely interesting you try to get a feel for that strike zone peers outside's going to be a ball here inside is going to be a strike yeah we've obviously not the best angle in the world at it but I'm definitely we call them balls and strikes up here all day the 01 grounded to tanuta he makes a nice plan on it throws it across the layman and they're out of the inning great job there from to tuna to layman three nothing lead for grand valleys you head to the bottom of the first it's going to take us to a quick break you listen to radio free hillsdale 101.7 fm charger baseball

Bottom one now. Chargers do up is Swenson, Tanuta, and Lehman. One guy to watch for the Chargers is number 33. Will Lehman, excuse me, freshman, first baseman, went five for five last weekend against Lake Uri,
Starting point is 00:14:29 and has really shown some great hitting early. And he's going to have to face up against number 29. Sebastian Talaga, a six-foot freshman lefty from Hollow Hills, Illinois, Stagg High School. It should be a fun matchup, a guy who hasn't pitched a lot of another freshman, two freshmen on the mound. And the Chargers have a lot of young guys in their lineup today. Starting off with Swenson, Tenuta, and Lehman. Swenson are freshman, two to a sophomore and Lehman are freshmen.
Starting point is 00:14:53 So it should be interesting. Yeah, it makes sense. Big reset year this year for Hillsdale. After not even making the conference tournament last year, out of eight teams making, I think there's 12 teams total in the GMAC. So not even making that tournament this year, a lot of freshmen, a lot of young guys. Trying to reset things. First pitch is in there. High, ball one for Swenson.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Yeah, the only older guys in the team are that play valuable minatures, Zach Kent, and the other senior, Augie Hutchinson. Talaga, the 1-0 outside gets by the catcher Christick for ball two. You also have a couple of pitchers that are older, but in the lineup. In a lineup, mostly younger guys. Swenson up 2-0. the count Talaga's pitch on the way. High, similar start that we saw from Smith for the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:15:46 We have a 3-0 count. You have to imagine Swenson's taken all the way, trying to get a base runner here after three runs scored. Definitely no swing here. In there, high, and a ball four on four pitches for Talaga. Not a guy, as we said, who pitches a whole lot, but they're going to get an early mound visit, try to reset things.
Starting point is 00:16:04 And a guy up for the Chargers that can really swing the twig. Rocco Tanuta made the great defense. to play to end the inning last time and now he's got a chance to keep the charges in it here early down three get some confidence for smith yeah he was hillstill college's freshman of the year out of all athletes and all sports just an absolute stud his freshman year and uh definitely keeping that going into a sophomore year toulaga here taking his time swenson on first who does have speed he plays center field almost every game for the chargers so he can take off try to get a runner in scoring position no outs first pitch from talaga outside they're going to call it strike one
Starting point is 00:16:43 hit the outer half. Teneer down 101. As we said, runner on first, no outs. Chargers down 3-0. Yeah, after a four-ball walk, he probably was told not to swing at that one, no matter where it was. Talaga ball low there.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Great stop from Crissick, not allowing the runner to advance, but the count moves to 1-1. Chargers is very patient at bets, from what I've seen at the couple games I have seen. They take their time, they wait for their pitch. It could be big for them.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Talaga, the 1-1. outside corner finds it again Tanuda doesn't like it just clarifying with the umptha that's going to be one as he said it might be the inside looks like he's finding that outside corner here the ump really likes that outside corner a lot of the batters today really crowding that plate
Starting point is 00:17:26 even early in the count and he's calling those outside one strikes the one two Talaga to Rocco outside two now that one was outside but I think you've seen how much he can stretch that strike zone he knows Tanuda has to defend with two strikes So trying to get him to reach.
Starting point is 00:17:45 2-2 now. Runner on first is Swenson. Kix steals, fires at home. Cut on their foul from Tanuta. Now straight back. Great timing, just a little bit under it there. Because, I mean, he was hitting out and fair all day. Talaga, a guy who doesn't really work too late into that pitch clock.
Starting point is 00:18:04 He likes to go from the stretch especially. So 2-2 now, no outs. Run around first. Swenson on the move, hit and run, foul from Tanita down the third baseline, into the dugout. A little bit off-speed pitch, a little bit early on that one, Furnoena. But, I mean, long at batts in baseball, they are pitcher killers. And a guy who has only made maybe three college starts,
Starting point is 00:18:30 this is a second college starts. And they don't want to go too far into the bullpen, especially in a non-conference game. You want to have a guy have a little length. The two-two. Off-speed pitch. Tenuta takes it into the right center gap. They got a redon in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Diving. Catch won't go. And it's bounced. around. Tanuta falls heading to second. He's got to dive in there. Runner stops on third. Couple of falls there in the outfield and by Tanuta, but runners on second and third, no outs. What a play there. Three guys down. Two outfielders, one base runner. And I mean, if Swenson really wanted to, I think he could have made it home. Yeah, Swenson couldn't get a good read on it because it looked like they were going to get there.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Thielen and Stimack both converging in on it. Nobody really called him off. They'd die for it. And now you've got to face Will Lehman, one of the best hitters for the Chargers, with two runners in scoring position with Tanuta on second. Yeah, a nice sack fly here even would score you a run, put you within two. Talaga kicks, steals, fires ball outside. Lehman, as we mentioned, that game the first on Sunday with a couple of walks, couple of hits, and got on base five times in that overtime win. The 1-0.
Starting point is 00:19:41 In there, low ball two now. and if you load him up you do have Augie Hutchinson who is one of the leading hitters with runners in scoring position not a great average but he walks and he gets runners homes when he home when he needs to yeah for sure 2-0 now Talaga gets to the sign
Starting point is 00:19:58 swing deep fly ball from Lehman to the right field Stimax's got a read on it gonna tag here from Swenson they're going to throw a third actually trying to get Tanuta and he's in there safely on a great slide RBI sec fly from Lehman and the scores 3 to 1 now You got another guy on third base.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Augie Hutchinson. Once again, another sack fly would score another run. Obviously, you're looking for a base hitter better, but just put some power behind it and allow Suneu to get home and make this a one-run game once again going to the second. Yeah, great approach by Lehman there, was down 2-0. Wasn't afraid to swing, took one deep to right field, able to score a runner and get one to third.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Great at bat there, one down now. The O.O. Hutchinson rips one to center field on a line. Tough read. Tanood is going to go. Throw is not even going to be close. Tanuta's up standing up and it's 3 to 2 now on the Hutchinson RBI sack fly. Yeah, and I mean the arm out of that center fielder, usually those guys have cannons, but that was pretty soft.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Yeah, that was a great at-bat by both the guys. And it was just kind of a liner to kind of left center, a tough play to get behind it and really wind up a throw home, wasn't able to. Scores Tanuta. 3-2 now, Chargers down one. After there's some great awareness and great baseball, really. You have two runners on with no outs.
Starting point is 00:21:14 You get them both home. This is something the Chargers actually struggled with against Lake Erie, even in the win. Yeah, nobody on base right here. For Billy Peroski, another freshman, second baseman. Made a couple great plays early in this game even. Trying to turn two. First one's in there for a ball from Talaga. The 1-0.
Starting point is 00:21:35 In there for a strike. Paraski watches it by 1-1 now. I think he was being patient on that one. Waiting for a strike. Trying to see one all the way through. Three two ball game, Chargers down one, the one-one. Perowski turns on it to second base here. If Vangvor gets it, turns it over to Goldberenson,
Starting point is 00:21:53 and they're out of the inning there. But the Chargers tack on, too, as we head to the top of the second. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM Charger baseball. I'm Gordy, and I'm on. I'm Lauren Smith, and someone pointed out to me that the weather here changes on a dime, which made us wonder, where does that ridiculous expression come from? The original expression probably didn't involve dimes at all, but had something to do with six pences or five cent pieces. The idea behind it was that a small denomination coin doesn't take up much space, so anything that turns or changes on a dime does so rapidly.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Early on, it usually applied to things that take up physical space. Cars, dancers, and baseball players could do things on dimes, meaning either with speed and precision or in the case of baseball players without covering all the ground they were supposed to. This latter use is probably how the expression was popularized, although its meaning subsequently changed. What was once a fantastic and fresh metaphor is now a cliche. This is a common fate of particularly catchy expression. That's your grammar minute. Hello and welcome back. You are listening to Radio for Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM Charger baseball top of second here in this nine inning affair.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Three to two, chargers tack on two to make it a one-run game. And the bullpen is going to get active early, kind of a bullpen. day. It's going to be Winston Delp, 6-1 sophomore from Toledo, Ohio. Kind of a sidearm pitcher for the Chargers getting an opportunity here. Yeah, pitched, or excuse me, pitched 10 innings, giving up 12 hits and nine runs. Only eight of those earned. But it seems like an all or nothing kind of guy giving up 12 hits but allowed nine runs. It's a kind of high average. Six point 97 ERA, not the greatest in the team. but looking to move that down.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Don't have a lot of innings pitch. There's not a big sample size for him. So just a couple of good innings or even just one really good inning, I mean, can move that ERA way down for him. He's got a tough task facing the 9-1 and 2. First up, third baseman, Caleb Estrada. The O-O. Inside, strike one.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Great pitch there from Delp. Get a strike on the board. No runners on, no outs at the top of the second here. Delp delivers outside corner. Great pitch again. Strike two and he's ahead of the count O2. Great couple pitches there. Finding the corners. Trying to, as we said, lock in, lower that ERA. The O2. Delp, swinging a drive, left field, foul.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Try to get him at the off speed there. Estrada takes it foul. Those submarine pitches, they're so hard to hit on the inside because you're naturally going to pull them. So when they're already inside of you, you pull those things so far foul. The O2 again from Delp to Estrada. Inside half, Estrada again pulls one foul. And they hurt his again, and they're inside. A little bit of a submarine. It's not quite a submarine pitch.
Starting point is 00:25:00 He's not getting below his knee, but it's somewhere in the middle. Yeah, those are the toughest ones to see, especially righty, righty here as Estrada is a righty. The O2. Delph outside, great pitch, fouled again. Was able to wait back on one on the outer half, but it goes fouled on the first baseline. Yeah, it's a great bat by Estrada.
Starting point is 00:25:17 I mean, you're O2, but you're keeping yourself alive with three foul balls in a round. Delp trying to get the first strike out of the afternoon. The O2. Delp on the inner half, high fly ball. Tanuta's got a read on it. Flips his hat back towards the dugout talking. What a play. Rocco Tanuta calls off the catcher Hunter and gets the first out of the inning. Yeah, phenomenal play there by Chinna. As soon as that ball went up in the air, he knew right where it was going. I mean, that's such a tough read. That ball was in the air for, well, it felt like an hour. But in running speed, I mean, he never stopped moving. Great play. As we said, Rocco Tanuda. And that, that whole infield is great defensively for the chargers.
Starting point is 00:25:55 Delp gets the first out of the inning now. No runners on, one out. Delp facing Morrison. Evan Morrison, the shortstop at the top of the order. Has a single and a run or a walk in a run in this game. First one's out there, ball one. Now you got a lefty too. A little bit of advantage for the batter.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Yeah, a couple lefties coming up in this lineup. The one-oh. Fakes bunt there, pulls it back. Ball two for Delp. Down in this count early. A lot of attempted buntz today by Grand Valley early. I mean, with two outs, one with two outs and one with nobody on base. In there, off speed, great one there from Delp for strike one, two, one now.
Starting point is 00:26:38 One out, three two here, the top of the second. Chargers fighting back after falling down three nothing from the onslaught of offense from GVSU. Two balls, one strike. Outside corner, we call the ball once again. Delp's going to take his time here. 3-1 now and you don't want to get a runner on for Dreistra, the left fielder who had a single last time. Pitch there.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Peroski's got a read on it at second. Ground out there and Delps got two outs here in the inning. A couple of great at-bats for Delp to get weak contact. Two outs now, nobody on. Now he's got a face, as we mentioned. the lefty Ryan dress scrap. Yeah, the nice thing is, is before this left, you built yourself a little bit of a cushion,
Starting point is 00:27:28 because even if he gets on base, he can't move on a sack fly, so. Great job from Delp, the OO, nobody on, two outs. First one's in there for a strike. Delp looks great here early. As we mentioned, kind of a sidearm release. Real tough, different look from what Hunter was giving them. Really mixing it up here.
Starting point is 00:27:48 The O-1, inside. Paroski's got a read on it. second and he can't catch it tries to throw it to first layman can't find it hunter able to back him up so he can't advance great play there from paroski almost had it in his mitt just kind of deep in the hole couldn't really squeeze it tries to throw it to first can't get him yeah i mean really really tough had the dive there got the ball on the glove but it just falls on me that's such a tough play yeah praski he's one of those guys that makes those plays and he's definitely frustrated but great effort and now the o-oh with one runner-up
Starting point is 00:28:21 on first two outs for Delp. He's got their best hitter, Jonas Goldrensen. Inside there, ball one. Letting him know the 1-0. I mean, really far inside. Didn't quite have to move out of the way. Was ready to take a hit. His credit stood in there, but very close there.
Starting point is 00:28:40 The 1-0 runner goes. Fowled off, check swing from Goldrensen. Don't know if that was a hit and run or if he didn't realize it wasn't and then kind of try to pull it back. It looked to me like it wasn't quite a hit and run because he didn't swing all the way through it. You normally are a hit and run, especially when you get a pitch like that right down the middle. You're going to want to smoke it.
Starting point is 00:29:01 The 1-1, runner on first is Dreistra. Two outs here, 3-2 lead for Grand Valley. Runner goes again, hit and run here, Dreiska, or Golbenson, sorry, deep fly ball the right field, Hutchinson range over it. And a great inning of work from Winston Delp and the Chargers keep the lead to just one. take you to a quick break here before the bottom of the second. You're listening to Radio for Hillsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy.
Starting point is 00:29:25 And I'm Evan. Hello, I'm Ariel McDowell here with another word to the wise. This is your friendly reminder to smile at the people you see in public. Make conversation with them. Be easy to approach and don't perceive strangers with apprehension. This may seem insignificant, but I've lived in different areas of the country and since moving to the Midwest, I've noticed something. You guys are better at this than most.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Midwesterners, whether they be at work or shopping or going for a walk, they still talk to you like they see you as a person. I know this seems cliche, but this skill does seem to be fading with our constant use of cell phones. Our constant hustle and self-focus makes us perceive strangers as an interruption to our day instead of a person worth our time. And my day has so frequently been made by a surprise compliment or conversation in public. So keep it up. Look somebody new in the eye and smile at them. I'm Ariel McDowell, and this has been a word to the wise on Radio Freehillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Hello and welcome back. You are listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. Bottom two here for the chargers as they are down three to two. Trying to find one more run to tie things up, but a great inning of work from Winston Delp. In Talaga, Sebastian Talaga will get the ball again. here for the second for Grand Valley. Yeah, and our Detroit Tigers, unfortunately down to, after a great start of the series against the Yankees. Looking for a sweep, but down to O in the bottom of the 7th,
Starting point is 00:31:06 now looking great for him. Great day, though, for Jackson Flaherty. Nine K's. Yeah, that is huge. And the Tigers are trying to prove that last year wasn't a fluke, having a great start to this year. Big win yesterday and the day before. obviously you sweep the socks but you have to sweep the socks yeah now up for the chargers shortstop aaron jessick
Starting point is 00:31:28 first pitch out there ball one erin jesick a great defensive player almost turned two earlier getting an opportunity here in the six hole trying to get some momentum back for the chargers the one o from talaga outside again ball two great effort there from christic to try to frame it unable to and now jacic's up two oh and he's not a guy you want on base because he can fly. Yeah, very, very, very fast player. I mean, almost like your first batter speed. Yeah. The 2-0 in there for strike one on the outer half.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Jasek taking his time of this AB up to 1. Charter's down 3-2 here. No runners on, no out. Bottom 2 with this nine-inning ball game out of conference. J-Sik gets one in there again. Strike 2. Doesn't love it. might have been taken all the way again trying to get a lot of pitches from to laaga as we said
Starting point is 00:32:25 gv doesn't want to use that bullpen if they don't have to try to get the quality start out to lagga who gave up two in the first only on one hit the two two off speed going to go to the second baseman there van inkumboard he'll throw it over to gulbranson first out of the inning there for gv yeah and j six not usually a big power guy doesn't have any home runs in the season he gets singles and when he gets on base that's when he's dangerous with those stories stolen basis still is you know the fourth best hitter for hillsdale averaging 295 but really a speed guy more than a power now on the seven hole senior catcher john hunter the righty swings big at the first pitch there in there for strike one for talaga one out no men on no one count i mean that was a
Starting point is 00:33:12 500 mile per hour swing right there if you made contact that was gone the o one inside curveball gets hunter looking again tough swing there Eric went fastball, then he went off speed. Now he's up 02, trying to get his first put out of the game. Talauga making quick work here, the O2 on its way. Hunter swings again, three straight strikes and a strikeout for Talauga. First K of the day. Yeah, unfortunate at that bad, but once again, that is the first K of the day.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Tartner just had a lot of quality at bat leading up to that one. Now up number 14, Jake Figman playing left field today. One of his first starts for the Chargers, I believe, and get an opportunity here as a freshman from Florida. Yeah, and in these non-conference games, you can kind of mix up the lineup just a little bit. A lot of their regular starters starting, which means that this is still a guy they believe in.
Starting point is 00:34:05 It's not a freshman they just threw in there. But it's a younger guy, get him some action. First pitch in there for a strike to Laga back here with the O-1. Curve ball inside, ball one. Two out, snowman on, three-two. Offense is kind of stalling out after that first inning. One ball, one strike. down the fair base line good and now figman's got a chance for two he turns the base it's deep into the corner maybe three
Starting point is 00:34:33 figman gets the break sign and a double for jake figman i mean in a phenomenal hit it hit all the way in that back corner and if the third or if the left field or excuse me didn't have such a great arm might have had three there yeah great job to turn on one down the third base line past the strata and a double for jake figman and now It's going to be the DH for the day. Caden Noak, another one of those seniors getting an opportunity here, lefty, lefty. That's actually his first double of the season right there. Off-speed pitch in there for strike one. Talaga here.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Two outs, runner on second is Figman. Caden Noak up for the chargers with a chance to tie it with a single. The O-1 from Talaga. In there, great pitch. Strike two. Now, Noak down 02. Two outs. You're going to take a quick time here.
Starting point is 00:35:31 And they're going to say that he tried to balk. That's going to give Figman a free run to third. Doesn't change a whole lot, as we said. A single probably does score him regardless running on contact with two outs, but Talaga came off the mound. I'm just explaining it too. He's up there standing on the mound and showing him how to pitch. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:51 He said you took your leg off the rubber Jeeves. Coach doesn't like it, but a free base, and that kind of lets NOAC reset, gets TILGA out of that rhythm up O2. Could be huge if NOAC's able to rip one now. Yeah, I mean, all you need is a single, guys on third and very easily scoring on either a single, or even an infield error. Yeah, and, yeah, like you said, anything that is, if he's able to run one out, Figman is scoring regardless, so changes a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:16 And the other thing, a pass ball. Hate to bring that up for Grand Valley. Hate to bring that up for Grand Valley. Had some problems with the pass ball. If you haven't seen it on social media, they did lose a game where three runs came in on one pass ball against Davenport. It's making its rounds on Twitter, so you never know. You'll see it pretty soon.
Starting point is 00:36:33 if you haven't yet. Yeah, you're anywhere on the internet, on TikTok, on Instagram. You will see that pretty soon. But I mean, Grand Valley actually against Davenport lost multiple games by just one run. Very unfortunate series for them for one of the best teams in the nation in Division 2. And now that they're up against Hillsdale at 23 and 9, Hillsdale a 17 and 15 team. He'll still down 3-2. Runner on third, though, bottom of the inning. We're going to tie it up right here against one of the best teams.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Coach gets an explanation. He's fired up about it, but got to resume baseball here. The O2 count Talaga versus Noak. Laga, as we said, kind of on the rhythm after making quick work with two early strikes, but now he's got to regroup. The O2 outside, ball one, and almost the pass ball. They're great block from Crissick. As we said, could be something.
Starting point is 00:37:29 If it gets by, Figman is out of there. trying to tie this game. Yeah, and it looks like they were trying to throw a purpose of ball, trying to get him to swing. Catcher was set up way outside, almost in the left batter box. The one-two to log into NOAC inside. Checks his swing didn't go. Great job to hold up on the high heater.
Starting point is 00:37:46 2-2 now. Yeah, if he was swinging at that one, he was probably missing. It was a good no-swing right there. 2-2. No-Wak fighting his way back after being down 0-2. Figman on 3rd. 2-2. 2-2 inside.
Starting point is 00:37:59 No-AC fouls went off his hands. inside fastball once again now count stays at two and two those ones probably those are the killers you swing in a cold day yeah two two now two outs three two ball game bottom second fastball's in there for strike three two k's on the inning for talaga figman stranded at third take you to a quick break here before the top of the third you're listening to ready for hillsdale 101.7 fm Georgia baseball I'm gordy. On chat. When most Americans think of Mark Zuckerberg's meta, they think of Instagram and Facebook and maybe
Starting point is 00:38:39 threads. Its chat platform WhatsApp has not been as quickly adopted as it has in Europe, Asia, and Africa, mostly because U.S. phone networks include free texting in one way or another. WhatsApp often seems unnecessary unless you had contacts outside the U.S. who rely on it. But the app's other features, such as broadcasts, channels, and status updates have grown in popularity, as they allow a mass dissemination of messages to large or multiple large groups. And that has led to spam complaints. Now, according to TechCrunch, Meta says they will be testing limits on WhatsApp broadcast messages
Starting point is 00:39:13 in the coming months in hopes of curbing the spam problem. Even WhatsApp business accounts may see limits, though Meta is planning on a new paid tier for business accounts, that will include features aimed at helping merchants do their marketing. With Fox on Tech, I'm Evan Brown, Fox News. and welcome back you're listening to radio free hillsdale 101.7 fm charger baseball top of three here Winston Delpkin the ball again here after a great inning just one walk got everyone else out and now he's got to face the 456 starting off with Gucciardo the d h now cool 45 degrees out here not exactly baseball weather
Starting point is 00:39:56 all the guys in there nice warm jackets over there for hillsdale no man on no man out as we start here and a 3-2 ball game. Chargers down one to the Lakers. First one's in there for a strike. Great pitch as they are crowding the plate, but as we mentioned, it is hard to hit that inside fastball from somebody throwing at a low arm angle. The O-1, great off-speed pitch. Strike 2. Delp working through this lineup here
Starting point is 00:40:22 with the four-hitter. Gouchiardo, their DH today. And he did in that second inning have one of his best innings of the year. The O-2. Slider away, rolled over to Poros. He's got it over to Lehman. One out of the inning and another quick out for Delp. Yeah, another out.
Starting point is 00:40:39 I mean, just phenomenal work, making work of these guys. Really, really struggled in that first inning pitching. But with Smith, but Delp, making quick work of him. One out now. He's got Aiden Van Inkenvort. Top of the third, one out, three-two lead. Delp delivers, ball one outside. Yeah, Van Inken-Dorat's brother.
Starting point is 00:41:06 Played football. here at Hillsdale College, a phenomenal player, and this Van Inkingdorf. Second base, and a pitcher as we get strike number one in the. Great pitch there from Delp. Again, really attacking these hitters not afraid, too, as they're only down one. The one one now from Delp to Van Inkenbord, outside corner again, strike two. Those right-handed pitchers really, really, really struggling against this. What do you call it?
Starting point is 00:41:35 Sinker? Yeah. The one, two, five. out behind him. As I said, one out. That funky release from Delpice provided a pitching spark after Smith kind of struggled, kind of calming things down in a three-two ball game, top of three. The one, two. Inside, taking a right field, great swing from Ben Ingramvort. Hutchinson's got a read on and there's two down. Submarine pitch. Submarine pitch, that's what it's called. Does a great job, getting weak contact here. That's been the big thing. Every time he does give up a hit,
Starting point is 00:42:08 It's either weak on the ground or in the air, and that's the second out of the inning. Oh, two outs. No balls, no strikes. Number five up now. Catcher Chrissick. The OO. Outside corner strike again. Delp.
Starting point is 00:42:23 GV seems to be taking that first pitch a lot. He's not afraid to throw a strike in there. Getting ahead of the count here. The O1 now, two outs. Delp way outside, ball one. This will stop there by the catcher. Way outside. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:39 The 1-1 now, 2-out's 3-2 ball game. Kick steals, fires. Sinker gets them there. Strike 2. Mixing up the fastball and the off-speed, and it's been working for Winston Delp. The 1-2 now, 2-outs, Delp delivers. Strike 3, what a play, and it's caught by Hunter. No chance to run down, and Winston Delp with the first K for the Chargers. And that's it, 1, 2, 3, 3-up, 3 down. That's how it's done right there in Hostel College. Take you a quick break before the bottom of the third.
Starting point is 00:43:15 You listen to Radio Free Hilsdale 101.1.1.7 FM. Charge your baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan. Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds at a time. I'm Lauren Smith, and today we're discovering Orion. The constellation Orion's bright stars and nebulae will adorn spring evening skies through April. Both will eventually explode as supernovae, leaving behind neutron stars are black holes.
Starting point is 00:43:51 In his sword, just fuzzy patches to the unaided eye and binoculars are more bright stars and several nebula. At the top of the sword is the open star cluster nebula in GC 1981, as well as the running man nebula. Highlighting the center of the sword is the magnificent Orion Nebula, its 24 lightyear-wide, expanse of star forming gas and dust illuminated by thousands of bright young stars. That's your Astro Minute. Hello and welcome back. You are listening to Radio Free Hillsdale. 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. Top of the, or excuse me, bottom of the third, three two ballgame. Chargers down one after the
Starting point is 00:44:33 Winston Delft, one, two, three inning. Taga, getting another inning of work for GV. Chargers have that top of the order due up with guards. Swenson. starting things off. This is the time this lineup, or this part of the lineup is what scored for them last time, see if they can respond the second time around seeing Talaga. Yeah, and this is 35 pitches thrown today, and I think they're just going to let them ride out
Starting point is 00:44:57 for as long as they possibly can. Chargers, top of the lineup, this is what you can get after him right here. Kurt Swenson, the freshman center fielder, walked in the first inning on four pitches. The first one on its way in there, strike one with the curveball. trying to find a strike as he did let Swenson walk to first.
Starting point is 00:45:21 O-1 now, Talauga to Swenson. Kicks, steals, fires. Swenson takes it foul. Out of play behind the dugout of Grand Valley. Really, really sat on that curveball. I mean, it was an amazing swing. And if you would have gotten on top of that one, that one could have went far.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Yeah, it's tough. You want to wait back on it. A little late. A little underneath it goes foul now. Down O2 to Talauga. Nobody out in the inning. great fend off by Swenson but it's popped up to the third basement. Estrada's got a read on it, one down.
Starting point is 00:45:52 Great job defending there with two strikes on you, but that one's weak contact and Talaga kind of settled in after giving up two in the first. Still three two, Rocco Tanuta now up. Rocco Tunita, one for one on that day. We're going to put together another double here. The O-O-1-out, no man on. Tanuda takes the first one in there for strike one. And that's the thing about Talaga here is he's really changed up his approach,
Starting point is 00:46:22 really trying to get those early strikes. It's made a difference against the chargers. Well, yeah, the chargers have been letting them. Chargers aren't swinging at those early strikes, making sure. Now the O-1. The O-1. Great swing there from Tanuda down the right field line. If it's fair, it's a double, and it is.
Starting point is 00:46:38 Tanuda makes the corner. Throw-in from Stimak is not in time, and O'Raco-Tanuda double. Number two double for the game for Rocco Tanuta. Great job there. And the opposite field power on that fastball took it down the first base line. Stimack couldn't get a read on it. Falls in there for a double for Tanuta. And now Will Lehman with a chance to tie it up with a runner on second and one out.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Yeah, in the scoring position here. And they're not even really covering the back. So it looks like they're going to let them get a pretty big lead here. Tanuta's second base. Tanuta, not a guy who normally stands. deals but they all oh out there ball one as we said layman great hitter for the charges great patience he's been spectacular freshman edition see what he can do here try to tie the ball game up three two bottom three the one oh layman fouls one off behind him now one one i was just thinking that big
Starting point is 00:47:36 lead might help him get home on a even a short single yeah and even if it does you got ogy Hutchison, who's got a sack fly in this game. Just play smart baseball. Don't get yourself out on the base pass. Chargers now 1-1. Swing high, fly ball to right field. Stimax got a read on it. Calls off Van Inkenvort.
Starting point is 00:47:56 Second out of the ending there. Just not enough for Teno to tag, and he's stranded at second. Now with Augie Hutchinson up. As we said, a great hitter with runners in scoring position. Not the best average, but when it's his time, he's ready to go, and that's that senior leadership. Senior right here. very experienced.
Starting point is 00:48:13 His first year really in that pure starting role. He played in a lot of games last year, but he didn't start in all of them. Kind of was a rotational guy for the Chargers. Now they lean on him. The O-O from Talaga to Hutchinson, high for ball one. Nuda, as we said, on second. Now, any content he's flying around trying to score.
Starting point is 00:48:36 The 102 outs, 3-2 ball game. Curve ball in there for a strike. Look like he was taken all the way, because that's a pitch to hit. Yeah, I mean, right down the middle. It looked like he was waiting for that first strike. 1-1 now, Talaga working through at the bottom of the third. Hutchinson rips one foul.
Starting point is 00:48:56 Now, 1-2 and Talaga with a chance to strand a runner on second and keep the lead for Grand Valley to 1. Yeah, and in this nine-in-in-game, Talaga's already at 43 pitches. A little bit of action in the bullpen for Grand Valley. The one-two, inside ball two. Hutchinson, great take there. You got to defend the two strikes, but you don't want to reach something and strike out the inning.
Starting point is 00:49:20 Great patience there, moving the count to two, two outs, runner on second. Hutchinson is the one guy who's not super crowding the plate. Interesting to see where, if that moves his strike zone at all. The two, two from Talaga is on its way. Curveball batted a third, going to be a tough play. Doesn't get his hands on it, and Estrada can't find it. And Hutchinson with the infield single. I mean just a little bouncer there almost like a bunt but very very very effective when that thing dies like it did right there
Starting point is 00:49:50 coach having a conversation with tenuda saying if you would have got tagged out there we would have been frustrated to do it gives him a fist bump says I'm good coach risky play because a tag there when he didn't really have the ball is all estrata was looking for after he knew he couldn't make the throw everybody's safe two outs runners on the corners for billy poroski freshman second baseman with a huge opportunity the o-oh in there strike one looks like it could have been high and outside but ump gives it to him now oh one yeah paroski a two sixty-three hitter one home run three two triples four doubles the o one great swing for paroski to left field they got a beat on it and grand valley gets out of the inning with the drissig catch great job there from talaga paroski hit it well, but not to a gap.
Starting point is 00:50:44 We're at three to two here, headed the top of the fourth. We'll take you to a quick break. Listen to radio for Hillsdale, 101.7 FM, Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan. This is the Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group. The American Civil War came to an end on April 9, 1865, in a little-known Virginia Village called Appomatics.
Starting point is 00:51:10 It was there that General Ulysses Grant, commander of the Union armies, accepted the surrender of his counterpart, Confederate General Robert E. Lee, ending the bloodiest war in American history. Total casualties exceeded 600,000 deaths, over which 320,000 were Union soldiers who had given their
Starting point is 00:51:32 lives to preserve the Union and abolish slavery in America. Never before in world history had a nation gone to war with itself to free slaves within its borders. This has been the Making of America. I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com. Hello, and welcome back to the top of the fourth. You're listening to Ready for Hillsdale.
Starting point is 00:51:58 101.7 FM Charger Baseball 7-8-9, due up for Grand Valley and Winston Delp. Story of this mid-innings having another opportunity, the right-handed sophomore, trying to get through another one, two, three inning. Been pitching great, keeping this lead to just one for Grand Valley five hits three runs four hits two runs for the Chargers yeah we talked about it he had a really really small sample size going into this game but this game right here we'll shoot his era straight down keeps us up nobody on first pitch of the inning is in there strike one as we mentioned he's going to attack him early see if grand valley kind of switches up their approach both teams kind of taking that first pitch and both pitchers figuring that out and kind of throwing a lot of strikes now oh ball
Starting point is 00:52:46 Oh, one. Great pitch off the plate, but gets them to swing. Feeling now down, O2. Feeling playing center field today, the lefty. O2 now for Delp, trying to get his second K of the night. Outside, ball one. He's trying something there. Yeah, one that you probably weren't going to chase
Starting point is 00:53:08 as it was outside the left batters box. Trying to get it away, not give up that first runner of the inning. The one, two. Great swing from Thielen right back where it. came from in a single the center for Thielen. Yeah, as great of a day, as Delp has had that right there, hung that one right over the plate. Catcher was set out outside on the one, too,
Starting point is 00:53:32 trying to get him to swing it something. Or throw a very corner, corner strike. And I think he kind of just let that one hang too far over the plate. Stimack now up, the righty right fielder with Thielen on first. No outs. Runner on first, Delp throws back. Charter's throwing back a lot, I'm assuming, with the fake bunts and everything Grand Valley.
Starting point is 00:53:52 does like to take off when they get the chance. Such a highly rated team. No outs. Feeling is two for two on the day. Already, so great day for him. There's the bun. Runner goes Hunter. Great throwdown, and he got him.
Starting point is 00:54:04 What a throw from John Hunter. Fake bun from Stimick. And a throwdown from Hunter is on the money. Pulaski tags him out, and now you got it out. Great job. I mean, you get a runner on the base, and then tries to steal and you get him right back out. Fake bun and run. In for a fresh.
Starting point is 00:54:22 strike now and Delps up 01 on Stimick. Just a phenomenal throw though there by 100. The O1 inside and he hit him. That's tough because you just got a huge out. You're up in the count. You just kind of plunk them there trying to find that slider coming back over the plate. And that is the dangerous thing about the submarine pitcher. On those right-handed batters, you're trying to pitch them inside.
Starting point is 00:54:46 You want them to pull it, you don't want to be able to get fair, but it's such a small change from a strike to a a ball to hitting the batter. Delp throws back on the first. No balls, no strike. Runner on. First is Stimick. Up now. The third baseman Estrada. Delp throws back again, almost got him. Laman. Hugging that base, trying to get a tag. He's had a couple opportunities from throwbacks, but you want to get out of this ending before facing the top of that lineup with Morrison. D.O. Delt delivers outside corner. Great pitch for a strike. Winston Delp throwing those strikes. trying to get out of this inning.
Starting point is 00:55:25 He's had a couple base runners. One thrown out, one on first now. Strata throw. Oh, it throws back again. It's going to be his last one there. Keeping his eye on that runner does not want to have one in scoring position for Estrada. The 1-0. Up the middle.
Starting point is 00:55:43 Peroski can't get a mid on it. It's into center field. Swenson's going to throw it in. Cut off by Paraski. Runners on the corners now with one out. That's a really tough play in the infield, especially where he was playing. Couldn't get a mid on it.
Starting point is 00:55:57 And runner goes from first to third now. And the top of the lineup is up with Evan Morrison, the shortstop. Yeah, that one was a great pitch right there. Really just able to tug his hands back inside and get it right down the middle. A phenomenal hit there by Estrada. D-O-O outside, ball one. As I said, runners on the corners are Estrada in Stimack. I think they were looking there to see if he was going to still second.
Starting point is 00:56:25 Yeah, that's a tough play too because you don't want to necessarily throw down too fast the runner can take home. The 1-0 outside corner. Great pitch in there for a strike. Delpa guy who normally comes in a little bit relief, not a starter. Throwing a lot of pitches here doing a great job,
Starting point is 00:56:41 but he's in a bit of a pickle with one-out, runners on the corners in the top of the lineup. Mortison, the 1-1. Inside, ball two. A strike-out gets you back on top and you can catch it, do whatever, but what would really be nice here for the Chargers is a double play.
Starting point is 00:56:59 3-2 ball game here, top of four. The 2-1 fouled off behind Hunter. Gets a mid on it. 2-2 now. Winston Delp trying to get his second strike out of the day. 3-2 ball game, top of four. Chargers just down 1 to a highly rated Grand Valley squad and an interstate out-of-conference game.
Starting point is 00:57:23 The 2-2. Delp gets the sign. ball low full count now Morrison working it as we said Delp not a guy who throws a lot of pitches when he does come in getting a lot of work here payoff pitch on its way Morrison takes it to left center got a read on it and it's going to fall into the gap Stimick's going to score runner's going to hold on third and an RBII double for
Starting point is 00:57:53 Morrison scoring Stimick moves estrata to third and now there's one out and up to bat Dreistra the left fielder that's kind of the second time that figman out there it's kind of got a bad jump on it that one was hit pretty far into the gap would have been a really tough play but not a great read on it yeah i think that was actually a really good play because he made it look like he had it for a really long time and that helped that runner on second so that he couldn't score because i think that the moment that runner knows because he was already running the second
Starting point is 00:58:22 he was going to be out because he was already running the second because there was three two count one out so great job there to stop it ball one for delp to drystra but yeah as you said made him look like he could get it was really hit far into the gap didn't get it but held runners on second and third with one out the one o fouled off behind one one one now delp taking his time trying to get out of this inning with only allowing one run as the scores four to two now Chargers down two to the Lickers. The 1-1. Delph on the inside. Fair ball down the first base line will score two.
Starting point is 00:59:08 RBI double for Dreistra. Hutchinson gets it in, but a two-run double, and now Grand Valley's up six to two. It looks very, very much like that. First thing that we had, you walk a batter. You get the other guys on second and third, or first and third, and then it just becomes really, really difficult at that point to get any outs and you're so worried about getting the guy out on third base that sometimes
Starting point is 00:59:31 you forget about the rest of the inning. You let a couple extra guys score. Yeah, pretty weak contact, but just found that first base line down to the gap Hutchinson doing a good job to cut it off to only allow it to be a double, but it clears the bases. And now up their best hitter, Gall Branson. Delph doing a great job. This is a tough team. At the end of the day, this is a good team, and they're not really sitting their best hitters.
Starting point is 00:59:57 Gold Branson playing the top of the order. Those guys all play a lot. So definitely a tough task, doing a pretty good job, and then got caught. It's a tough team, and they're pretty good pitching, but they are a great hitting team. That's where they're dominant. 6 to 2 now. Runner on second, one out. The O.O.O. to Gold Branson.
Starting point is 01:00:20 Hope takes a look back to second on his way behind him there. Ball 1. It's going to get a runner to third. Not a very competitive pitch goes behind Gullbranson. Oh, I mean, that right there is what you cannot do, let them get free bases. Fortunately, it's not going to hurt you real bad. But now a sack fly does score a runner. Yeah, and it's tough to pitch on these cold days.
Starting point is 01:00:42 Trying to get a grip of it, and you light up a couple and got to settle back in now, the 1-0. Outside strike. Definitely an interesting call, helping out Delp a little bit now, moving the count to 1-1. flying all the way across the plate. Like we said earlier, the umpire likes those outside and away pitches. This one to Tanuta. He'll throw home, caught the runner. Great job from Tanuta to recognize it, and he's out at home.
Starting point is 01:01:11 Rocco Tanuda made it look like he was throwing one all the way. Runner takes off, flips back to Hunter and a tagout, and that's a huge momentum switch. Chargers are down four, but it's not five after a great play from Rocco Tanuda on the hot corner. Yeah, that was very, very poor base running. He didn't wait for that throw to first. actually be released from his hand. He just went as soon as he could, as soon as he thought that ball was going first. Gold Branson gets the first, and now this one grounded to J. Sick.
Starting point is 01:01:37 He'll throw it to second, and Delps settles down, gets out of the inning with looks like could have been more. It's only going to be three. Six to two now as we head to the bottom of the fourth. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, charger baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan. Fox on Film.

Welcome back. You were listening to Radio Freehlesdale 1-on-1.1. Point sound FM Charger baseball bottom four and a new pitcher for Grand Valley. Freshman Edward Cohnow. He's pitched six innings so far this year. Giving up 12 hits and 10 runs.
Starting point is 01:03:45 A 12.15 ERA, a guy that's harders really, really go after. Down 6-2. Fun fact about him. He's the lightest player, 6 foot 165 rare for a pitcher to be so light. So we'll see what he's got. He's got to face shortstop Aaron Jasek. And this is a chance. You get that lead for Grand Valley, you pitch a couple new guys,
Starting point is 01:04:05 but this charger offense can jump on you quick. It should be fun here at the bottom of the fourth. First pitch on its way in there for strike one. Got to be a real placement guy. I mean, if you're that light, you're usually not throwing a ball 80, 90 miles per hour. Ball one there on the low pitch from Kownau. As we said, only pitched six innings. Getting an opportunity here against the Chargers.
Starting point is 01:04:32 One one count to Jasek. out, nobody on. Six to two, charges down four. Next pitch in there, low ball two. Fro now is a freshman, as we mentioned, from Tinley Park, Illinois. Two-one. Inside, Jasek almost wears it for ball three now. Jasek, as we mentioned earlier in this game, not a guy you want to get on that base pass.
Starting point is 01:04:57 He can fly a little bit. The 3-1. Way outside, ball four. Jasek works a four-pitch, or a five-pitch walk. Chargers have a base runner. on for john hunter trying to rebound after that three-pitch strikeout last time against uh talaga but he's got a different pitcher now he's got canal see what he can do and canal that's his fifth walk of the season five walks and six innings not terrible for how many runs he's given up not horrible
Starting point is 01:05:29 but it's the hits that's what they've been given up it hasn't really been walking that many people First pitch to Hunter outside corner in there for strike one. Jasek taking a pretty healthy lead. Could be something to watch him taking off. Yeah, right-handed pitcher now you got in there. Can't see the first base as a turnaround to give me kind of throw off. Hunter up now against Canal, the 0-1. Strike 2 on the outer half.
Starting point is 01:05:54 Great pitch. That's tough too because he just took one that was on the corner. Trying to take that same one. Doesn't get anything now. Down 0-2 runner-on first is J-Sik. And it looked like it was outside of his swing, but I think even if he wouldn't have swung, I think that would have been a strike. The O2 to Hunter from Konaugh, low there, ball one. Looks close, great pitch there just outside the zone low, but it's going to be ball one.
Starting point is 01:06:22 I mean, bold not to swing at that one, but as a guy who's swung in most pitches, it must have been more outside than we thought. The one two. Jason gets a lead inside, almost hit him. Hunter did not move at all. They're not afraid to wear one that did not hit him. It looked like a minute it touched a fabric. As close as you can get without touching him, but it's ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
Starting point is 01:06:45 J-Sick on first, no men out. The two-two low again and a great at bat here from John Hunter. Struck out earlier, works the count back to full. Getting a signal from his coach. Possibly a hit-and-run situation here. Trying to get some momentum down, six-two, bottom four. payoff pitch on its way great swing there from hunter down the third base line just foul
Starting point is 01:07:09 that would have been a really tough play for estrata because he can't turn two at that point jacic is going to be safe at second maybe you get a chance at hunter at first but said it goes foul count stays full yeah no matter what as long as you get that in play and not towards the two middle infielers i think jason's jacic could get in a second payoff pitch gets the sign on its way ball four hunter takes a walk after being down 02. Great patience there. Now you got runners on first and second for Jake Figman.
Starting point is 01:07:42 Doesn't play a lot, but it has a double in this game. And coach is going to have a talk here. Obviously, you can't take the pitcher out yet because he's only faced two batterers. He's got to face all these three batters. But I'm going to give him a talk. Give him a little pep talk. Say, hey, you can do it, buddy. You got this.
Starting point is 01:07:57 And then he's going to go back to the dugout and hope and pray. Looks like they are taking him out. Maybe that's only a major. League rule. It might be a major league rule. Not familiar with D2 baseball, but only two batters face there. And that's it. That's going to be the day for Co now. Two walks. And now they're going to bring in. Tough to see who this will be getting the ball for Grand Valley. But Grand Valley, obviously, trying to try some new guys, feel things out. But they still want to win this game. They're one of the top rated teams that are trying to get a win. And the Chargers now, runners on first and second. No outs. Jake Figman up and then I believe
Starting point is 01:08:37 Caden Noak, the DH, and then it starts that lineup over with Swenson and Tanuta, who have both been great in this game. Yeah, Sunnet, two for two. Swenson had a couple nice swings, has a walk on the day, and one of those two guys, unless you get into a double
Starting point is 01:08:53 play here, is going to get up to bat. At least Swenson's going to get up to bat, so dangerous part of the lineup that they're coming in. This guy looks at he's got a lot more power, but it appears to be number two? Tough to see from up here. Here we go.
Starting point is 01:09:11 Yeah, it is number two. Wow. Zach Warren's second basement. Has not pitched a single game. And he looks to have pretty good stuff. This year. He's 10, 175, another lighter guy, righty, sophomore from Stensonville, Michigan, Lakeshore High School. Like you said, they're trying out different guys.
Starting point is 01:09:29 He hasn't pitched at all. See what he's got. He looks in this warm-up a little bit all over the place, but I would say that the power is definitely there. That one looks to be submarine. He's throwing it kind of all over the place. Different arm angles. This one's over the top.
Starting point is 01:09:45 So, Chargers haven't seen him. Nobody's seen him. He just threw one sidearm, threw one over the top, mixing things up, giving the hitters fits for GV. They're hoping, but not an easy situation for your first time facing some batters with runners on first and second and Jake Fickman up. Yeah, I mean, it's a very good. very interesting situation you already got runners on and this is your first time pitching at least
Starting point is 01:10:09 in college this year of college and you are up four but at the end of the day it is only four yeah and in college baseball runs happen so fast and the chargers have runners first and second jacin can score on anything and it's definitely interesting choice but they're going to go with it definitely different choices with this out-of-conference game you're trying to save those arms they didn't have a choice but to go to him, Zach Warren's first pitch of his career, or this season at least, on its way. Strike one on a great fastball, definitely has some pop to it. Strike one for Figman. Yeah, in college baseball, the average run is 7-8, just looked it up.
Starting point is 01:10:49 Thank you, AI. And as we said, you don't have to face three batters either. Found that out. The 0-1. Sidearm, great swing from Figman, high-fly ball to center field. Thielen's got a track on it, and J-Six is going to go testing that arm of Thielen, which doesn't appear to be much. No, that's the same guy earlier who had kind of the weak arm. It looked like it wasn't earlier.
Starting point is 01:11:13 It might have been the run-up, you know, the angle that he had, kind of a tough throw. But that one right there, I mean, he just had nothing on it. Great pitching, though, from Zach Warren, even though it is a runner that moves the third. You set up that double play with Hunter and Noak, not the fastest guys for the charges could be doubled up and get out of the inning. but a sack fly again the chargers that cuts the lead to three you never know what can happen Warren versus the lefty dh kaden noak walk-up song bring a fire well Johnny cash first pitch fouled off by noak off the catcher and he needs a second
Starting point is 01:11:48 that's tough got a piece of it Christa couldn't catch it as it was tipped he's going to take a second we're going to talk to the pitcher here give him a ball Warren, as we said, a second baseman typically. I don't know how many at-bats he has, but he's got an opportunity to pitch in a big moment against kind of an in-state foe of Hillsdale. A lot of two, two-and-a-half-hour drive down from Grand Rapids. Yeah, and it got him right in the wrist,
Starting point is 01:12:18 it looks like he's working out that wrist. You're going to get a throw here and make sure he can. And that's not a guy you want injured. You don't have that many catchers on a team. You have a lot of pitchers. You have guys that can pitch that normally, don't but catcher is one of those positions where you have your guys. Chargers play two of them with Hunter and Millard. That's what most teams do. You get two guys deep and that's it. You got a guy
Starting point is 01:12:40 for one of the other guys played four games in a row and his knees are, I mean, bleeding. I could never play catcher, that's for sure, but not a guy you want to get hurt. Looks like he's going to, he's going to at least stay in the game. I'm going to see how well he can throw. He can definitely catch. It was in his throwing wrist, but not being able to throw on a second as a catcher would be a huge disadvantage. The O-1 now to Noak. In there, ball outside. Another great pitch there from Warren.
Starting point is 01:13:08 But that one's off the plate. One-one now. Runners on the corners with one-out six to two. Grand Valley up four here at the bottom of the fourth. The one-one. Warren gets the sign on its way. Outside ball two now. Great patience here from Noak and walk here.
Starting point is 01:13:27 That gives you guard Swenson and the top of the lineup up with bases juiced. Yeah, and it was the exact same pitch right there, just a bit outside, really trying to make him chase. Submarine pitch there. That is crazy to switch up his arm action and it's inside for ball three. And to have that much steam on a different arm angle is very impressive for a second baseman. Second baseman, you usually don't even get to set your feet.
Starting point is 01:13:50 You're just kind of throwing. So maybe this is what he's used to. 3-2 is high. Noak works a walk. Now Warren's got a tougher situation. base is loaded in a guy who plays every day for the Chargers in centerfield guards Swenson. It hasn't had any action out there in center field.
Starting point is 01:14:07 Had a walk earlier on their base in him earlier in the game and a great at bat that second time around. But looking for a hit to score one, two, or maybe three runs here. And you don't need to get it all back with a grand slam as cool as that would be a base hit. You're getting runners in motion. You're turn it over for Rocco Tanuta. submarine pitch outside ball one Warren really switching up that arm angle and a walk scores a run here so you do not want to walk this batting the 1-0 there it is the second base van Inkenvort to the shortstop to the first base and a double play
Starting point is 01:14:45 Warren gets out of the jam Chargers strand three and it's six to two just unfortunate base is loaded only one out and you get a double play that's the worst possible outcome Well, that's going to take us to a quick break. Before top of five, you're listening to Ready for Eelsdale, 101.7 FM, Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan. Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds out of time. I'm Lauren Smith, and I'm back with another history of a weird punctuation mark.
Starting point is 01:15:14 Where do we get the pound sign from, and what does it have to do with social media? Most likely, this sign actually did mean pound, as in a unit of weight used by the Romans. It was originally supposed to be a bee, but, Over hundreds of years of frantic scribbling, it was reduced to two horizontal strokes crisscrossed by vertical slanted lines. Over time, the meaning also shifted to refer primarily to numbers rather than weight. It's not clear exactly why hashtags play such an important role in social media, other than the fact that they were traditionally used in computers to label text as having
Starting point is 01:15:48 some different meaning than surrounding text. For example, a programmer might use hashtags to tell the computer not to run the following line of code. That's your grammar. minute visit the grammar minute.com for more tips and tricks welcome back you are listening to radio free hills at 101.1.7 fm charger baseball chargers are given another freshman the ball here at the top of five it's going to be the freshman Colin lang number 29 65 205 from north Olmstead ohio st ignatius high school six five I mean sometimes those guys have really really really really explosive pitching even though they when they get
Starting point is 01:16:30 guys on base it's a little bit easier to steal because their release is slower but if you can use all that length i mean you could throw a a 90 plus mile power ball yeah he's got a pretty long motion kind of bringing it around but he's got to face a tough part of the lineup starting off with aiden van ink and vort in the five hole playing second baseman a couple nice plays turned to the double play last inning to get second baseman zach warren out of the jam chargers strand three there's a problem for them all year. Every game I've been to, they strand a lot of hitters, a lot of base runners. So that's definitely something that's positive moving forward.
Starting point is 01:17:09 They got a lot of guys on base. They're only down four. Flanke can kind of shut them down here. It's a nine- inning game. We're only at the top of the fifth. So definitely not over. Got a decent little crowd out here at Linda and Glenda Hill Stadium. Actually, it's Linda and Glenda Hill and TFO partners feel all at the same time.
Starting point is 01:17:29 but decent little crowd out here on a Wednesday afternoon game a lot of high schoolers on a visit over here and then some family members and some football players first pitch high for laying to van Inken vort 1-0 now nobody on nobody out in this 6-2 ball game Chargers trying to pull off a little bit of an upset here keep that momentum rolling from the weekend the 1 o laying in there strike 1 you do see a little bit more pop from him six five you can really get down on the ball in there for strike one one one count now to van ingefort yeah and later you release that thing the last amount of time people are going to have to react to it just because of how far you can get your arm down great pitch there again on the
Starting point is 01:18:15 outer half um's calling it he's using it one two count now to van inkinforbord ahead in the count here i get an off speed pitch right here one ball two strikes nobody on nobody out laying great pitch there in there but fouled off down the first base line into the bullpen of the chargers for van Inkenvort fights that one off one two count now lang trying to get the first man of the inning out aidan van ink and vort taking his time now lang gets the sign kicks and delivers in there ball two close one there as he's crowned the plate but inside for ball two two two down yeah it's too bad it didn't curve just a little bit more because he really thought that was going to hit him and there was no way he was swinging.
Starting point is 01:19:11 Eyes closed probably. 2-2. Fowled off again down the first base line for Van Inkenvort. You can see they're a little later now on the pitches because it is a different submarine from Delp and now kind of a big over-the-top motion from Lang. And he's definitely got some power in that arm right there. The 2-2 from Lang on its way jammed him. tough playing the whole Parowski able to corral it before it finds the right field of Hutchison,
Starting point is 01:19:40 but it's a single for Van Inkenvort. If he's anything like his brother, he can fly. Yeah. But obviously, there is a little bit of a size discrepancy between the two Van Ingenbord on the football team. Height. We'll leave that for him to discuss, but let's just say his brother Aiden on the baseball field got all that height. Able to find one there. No men out.
Starting point is 01:20:04 runner on first is Van Ingenvort. Now up the catcher Chrissick. First pitch out there for ball one. Hunter does have a throwout in this game already, so proven to be a tough guy to run on. First one is in there for ball 1-0 now. It also does a pretty good job of keeping those runners on first base close to the base.
Starting point is 01:20:23 That one's ripped to right field. Hutchinson gets a good read on it, and it's a lineout for the first out of the inning. Great hit there, and once again a little late on it from Crissick. but and they're getting a call some kind of interference as the runner is going to move to second so they're going to keep the out but van inginvort's going to get second base that's a huge change for the chargers because before you're in a double play situation now you have a runner in scoring position fast player like van ingevor can score on a single if it's hit
Starting point is 01:20:55 right and that's a huge change and coach tom fissell is going to talk to the coach say what happened I think they're calling it a balk, but I'm not really quite sure. Because it doesn't make us any sense for runners' interference on a pop-up that he was just going to go back to the bag. So it's got to be a balk here. But yeah, this is huge. It was a balk and the runner and the out does not count. So now there's no outs. Runner is on second and Krissick gets another opportunity after it must have been a balk.
Starting point is 01:21:27 Must have been. I mean, that's an incredibly changed call. runner goes to second for free you take away and out and it must reset the count now for chrissick uh i think they're just they don't have the out up there i think the count's going to go back to what it was because the out's still up there on the scoreboard but i don't believe that that resets the count should stay the same should stay the same
Starting point is 01:21:50 so that's going to be a ball on the block believe that was the first count is one oh counts one oh yep Chrisick back up after flying out gets another chance against Lang. Ben Ingevord on second. Chargers down 6'4. Lang delivers inside strike one. Great pitch there, finds the inside corner, and you got to kind of settle back down.
Starting point is 01:22:17 You just thought you got an out. Had a chance for a double play. Instead, no outrunner on second. You got to face Krishik again. Tough to get a guy out twice. Yeah, that's just, that's quite a call there. I mean, game changing for sure. The 1-1 chopper.
Starting point is 01:22:33 Lange can't get a read on it. It's going to be an infield single there. For Crissick, really tough play for Lange. Thought it might have gone foul. Took a funky bounce on the turf here, and he gets the first. And Van Inkenvort gets the third. Now you got runners on the corners, no outs.
Starting point is 01:22:50 Number eight, Thiel end up. So now, instead of first-based one-out, you've got first and third no-outs. I mean, that is a huge difference for the charge. unfortunate circumstances. Lings trying to get the first out of the inning here. On its way, ripped by Thielen into the gap, down the first base line. Hutchinson cuts it off.
Starting point is 01:23:13 Phelan's going to second Hutchinson trying to throw him out. He's in there safely, and he's off the bag. Great awareness by Jasek. He's upset about it, but an out slid off the bag in the first out. Now there's just a runner on third, and Van Ingevort scores 7 to 2 now. Yeah, I mean, just really, really poor base running. He slid over the base and then he just kind of stood there, tried to walk back and all of a sudden he realized,
Starting point is 01:23:38 hey, I can tag that guy. And he did and very upset about the call, but it's the right call. Now up Stimick, the right fielder with the runner on third. Chrisick, one out. Seven to two. Lange delivers in there, strike one. Great pitch right there. Off speed.
Starting point is 01:23:58 Runner tried to get on top of it, but. It's going to swing too early. The O-1. Pitch off the plate there. Ball 1 from Lange to Stimick. As we said, one-out runner on third is the catcher Chrisick. 12 hits for Grand Valley. They've been tearing the cover off the ball.
Starting point is 01:24:22 The 1-1. Down and out. Two balls, one strike. Yeah, and this ends up being a close game. I mean, you're really going to look back at that balk call right there. Ben Inking, if we're able to start. score on the double. Tagged out. Now there's just a run around third, two one.
Starting point is 01:24:41 Gets him to swing off the plate. Great pitch from Lang, two, two now. Two balls, two strikes, one out. Lang trying to get his first strike out of the day. Gets the sign from Hunter. Collects and delivers. Off the plate there, three, two now. And the walk's not the worst thing because you set up the double play for yourself. You got a strata up on deck, but a punch out here would be huge.
Starting point is 01:25:10 if you're laying for your confidence. Yeah, especially because you were up in this count earlier. The 3-2. Lang, way high, not a competitive one there, walks him. And now, situation we talked about earlier, strata up, runners on the corners, one out. There are a lot of runners on the corners for Grand Valley, and that's what happens when you have 12 heads.
Starting point is 01:25:30 Yeah, I mean, really just tearing up these younger pitchers from Hillsdale. Delph had a couple of phenomenal innings in the middle there, but you've got some more guys in the bull, and warming up for Hillsdale is they're just they're just tearing apart these younger guys strata gets the first pitch in there on the outer corner for strike one and it's really not been a lot of extra base hits a couple doubles in there but nothing out of the park or no triples just a lot of singles yeah a lot of singles the 01 from lang runner goes hunter he's going to throw down they try to fake it like they were going to cut it off there they fake like they were going to cut it off there they
Starting point is 01:26:10 and maybe throw home. Smart base running by the guy on third, Chrissick. But it's going to be a steel there from Stimick. Nice to at least hold him to third. You know, you get that throwdown. Sometimes you're worried that you're going to let that guy get home, but able to keep him there. The 1-1, runners on second and third, one out.
Starting point is 01:26:31 Ripped down the third baseline and fair. That's going to score two. An RBI double for Estrada. Throw coming in from Figman cutoff. by Jasek and a two run double there and again just another not amazing hit baseball just kind of rolls by the glove of Tanuda at third base it's going to be the 13th hit of the day in the ninth run this game's starting to get out of hand hunter's going to take a mound visit with lang yeah they're not going to are they going to pull them coach walking up out of the mound too appears like they're
Starting point is 01:27:08 going to pull them now yep got some guys from the from the dugout walking up Lange a freshman again, get an opportunity. And it's tough because you want these guys to get an opportunity, kind of build some confidence. But when your opportunity out of conferences against a team like Grand Valley, 13 hits, and they make it real tough. Yeah, and laying very unfortunate circumstances because it should have another out, should have less runs.
Starting point is 01:27:35 But on that called, Balk, things really changed for them there. Couldn't really recover. Chargers are going to bring in a lefty. Here's to be number 26. Drew Erdy. Best ERA on Hillstill. Not a lot of innings pitched. Not a huge sample size.
Starting point is 01:27:56 We're only giving up a 1.46 ERA and 12.1 innings pitch is very, very, very good. Senior, very experienced guy. And this is the first guy who's on Hillstil's team has played today who's been like, this guy's experience. This guy knows what he's doing. Let's put some away. Drew Erdy, great pitcher, as we mentioned, from IMG Academy. Great sports school. A lot of experience.
Starting point is 01:28:25 I believe he's from the UK, actually. Really? Yeah, it doesn't say it on the roster, but I thought I saw it. Just kind of a guy that's been everywhere, but Lefty has a huge opportunity. 9 to 2, Chargers trying to cut the deficit. down by getting a couple out. There is a runner on second.
Starting point is 01:28:45 Not a terrible situation. Relief guys normally come in when things are pretty tough. So run around second, Erdy trying to give him some endings here. Yeah. Just during this break, let's give a little shout out. Coming up here, NFL draft, and former hostel college wide receiver
Starting point is 01:29:04 and Arkansas wide receiver, Isaac Teslaw. Going to get himself drafted this year. Yeah, a couple interviews I saw. He's got a while. one with the Lions and one with the Rams. He's interviewed with every team, but he's had a top 30 visit with those two, which very, very important for teams when they get drafted. And I think the Rams is just a great spot for him.
Starting point is 01:29:24 Top of the order now. Morrison, runner on second one out. Erd's first pitch. High fly ball to the third base line. Tenuta making a run after it. It's going to go into the bullpen. Great effort there from Rocco. Unable to reach it, and that's going to be strike one. And he hits the ball, hits the wall pretty hard.
Starting point is 01:29:41 Rocco is one of those guys that's going to hustle at third base. Great defensive player. I'm sure he's frustrated. There's been a couple that have been just out of his reach down the line for doubles. So trying to make up for it. They're unable to. But Erdy versus the top of the line up. A couple lefties.
Starting point is 01:29:57 He's a lefty. O'1 now on Morrison. Estrada on second. Erdy, great curve ball, but it doesn't come back quite into the zone. Got him to back out, but can't find the zone. One-one now. Yeah, definitely wasn't going to hit him. Got it the curve.
Starting point is 01:30:13 enough but almost got it to curve over the strike zone would have been a phenomenal pitch getting a guy to back up and then calling a strike throws back there tough play for a lefty to throw back to second like that almost got a strata sleeping but unable to get him jacic controls it back to ernie now one one one out nine to two grand valley as mentioned with 13 hits in this one the one one ripped to the second baseman praski he's corrals it throws it over to layman two outs now great job there from prowsky to stay down on it Erdy gets the first out or the second out of the inning his first now he's got to face Driskraut now that in the left wheeler number 14 Ryan Dykstrae yeah really really experienced play there I mean very calm at second base from such a young guy
Starting point is 01:31:02 he just looks so comfortable feeling those brown balls no balls no strikes two outs Estrada on third in there strike one for Erty trying to calm down this three-run inning, and that's all they've had. They've had three-three-run innings, two zeros from Delp. The O-1, Erdy, grounded to him. Great play from Erdy. He'll run it over himself. He gets the out to Lehman and two quick outs from Erdy and the Chargers Strand Estrada. Yeah, and the guy with the best ERA on the team, once again gets another zero run in it. It's going to take us to a quick break before the bottom of the fifth. You're listening to

With Fox on Tech, Mark Meredith, Fox News. Hello and welcome back. You were listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball, 9-2, Grand Valley, up seven here, bottom fifth. The second baseman, Zach Warren, is going to get the ball on the mound once again.
Starting point is 01:33:03 Yeah, another shout out. We'll wait in this break right here. Shut up to Joni Russell, former All-American two years ago. Histakobel shots, and every time that she's pitched that I've watched, the Chargers have won. Softball team trying to recreate a little bit of magic that they had last year. Great run from them. Baseball team, 17 and 15. Great season for them with the amount of young guys they have, trying to make a comeback here against Grand Valley.
Starting point is 01:33:29 Rocco Tanuta up. First one in there from Warren is a strike. Yeah, as a team that didn't make the tournament last year to have this many freshmen and now be 17 and 15, that's a huge upgrade. The O-1 side-arm pitch out there for ball 1-1-1 now. Mixing up the arm angles as he did before, Warren going after Tanuta here. Another side-arm pitch in there for strike two on the outer half. Warren's really trying everything in his debut. Left shoulder, bump-fade.
Starting point is 01:34:01 Might not even be a bump-fade kind of guy, but... The 1-2. Tanuta swings at a strikeout from Warren, his first of the day. second baseman typically for gv has a strikeout maybe he'll give this guy some more pitching opportunities after this one right here he's facing the heart of the lineup now with will layman up for the chargers and he's giving him some good innings trying to keep that bullpen fresh for cleack play moving forward they have a real chance to win that conference this year one out no men on the o o sidearm pitch in there again for a strike and that's three in a row he's like i like that yeah good
Starting point is 01:34:41 chance to win the Gliag as long as they're not any more past balls. O-1 count, one out. Warren to Lehman. Lehman fans at one, and now he's up O2. Tell you what? Zach Warren, sophomore. Stetsonville, Michigan. Definitely going to put Slash pitcher on his position sheet now.
Starting point is 01:35:03 The O2. Trying to get back-to-back K's. Great take there from Lehman outside. One-two now. Chargers is just trying to get a couple base runners, see what they can do. the one two over top great swing there from layman fouled you're not going to get it all back at once you got to start making dense start getting guys on base and slowly cut this lead down long game nine innings today obviously you've stopped from scoring anymore but you only have four hits in the day
Starting point is 01:35:32 got a couple walks too but so that's not the full story but you got to get some more hits the one two from war and on its way layman rips one down the third baseline foul And of your top four batters, Swenson's O for two with a walk. Tenoot is two for three, and Lehman's O for one, also with a walk. So those top three batters, no hits, and then Hutchinson has one for one. The one-two, sidearm slinger for strikeout number two. Warren working through the meat of the lineup with two K's now. Two out, Soggy Hutchinson do up.
Starting point is 01:36:08 Yeah, so the only three or four guys on Hillsdale with a hit today. is one of them. Judah was his first out of the game right there, two for three, Hutchinson, one for one, and then Figman, with that double down the third base line. Only other hit today. Inside strike again, and I tell you what, Warren is really throwing a nice game now up O'1 on Hutchinson.
Starting point is 01:36:32 He's been dreaming of this day right here. Put me in, coach. Outside ball one. This is a good thing that they can note. He's got a lot of confidence after this pitching performance so far. He's a guy that if you need some innings, he'll give him to you. Yeah, and this is every field player's dream. Next pitch in there, low 2-1 now.
Starting point is 01:36:55 Two outs, no runners on in a 9-2 ball game here. Glenda and Glenda Hill Stadium. TFO Partners Field. Hutchinson down the third-based line foul. Nice liner. I think that if that would have been fair, he might have gotten there, making that third baseman spread all the way out. We haven't really seen him make a great throw from there.
Starting point is 01:37:17 Saw him earlier take a bouncer and not even make an attempt at it. The two-two count, two outs. Warren delivers. Hutchinson takes one for strike three on the outer half. Look like it would have been close. It's not, and it's a three-strikeout inning from Zach Warren. Take you to a quick break before the top of the six. You're listening to Radio for Eelsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy.
Starting point is 01:37:43 and I'm Evan. Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds out of time. I'm Lauren Smith, and I'm back with another history of a weird punctuation mark. Where do we get the pound sign from, and what does it have to do with social media? Most likely, this sign actually did mean pound, as in a unit of weight used by the Romans. It was originally supposed to be a bee, but over hundreds of years of frantic scribbling, it was reduced to two horizontal strokes crisscrossed by vertical, slanted lines. Over time, the meaning also shifted to refer primarily to numbers rather than weight.
Starting point is 01:38:20 It's not clear exactly why hashtags play such an important role in social media, other than the fact that they were traditionally used in computers to label text as having some different meaning than surrounding text. For example, a programmer might use hashtags to tell the computer not to run the following line of code. That's your Grammar Minute. Visit thegrammerminut. com for more tips and tricks. Well, and welcome back. You're listening to Ready for Hillsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball.
Starting point is 01:38:51 Drew Erdy, get the ball once again here, top six, and he's got a face off against the best hitter we've mentioned all day. Gol Branson, first baseman for Grand Valley. Yeah, had a phenomenal inning last inning. Obviously, the three runs were already given up, but he came in with a guy on second base and no outs, and he got all three without letting that run score.
Starting point is 01:39:09 Or one out, I see. Excuse me. Erdy's first one's out there for ball. one. Jewertie, as we said, coming in with the lowest ERA, trying to keep things going. One ball, no strikes, no runners on. Ripped there from Goldbrantz and up the middle. J.6's got a read on it, throws it across to Lehman. Got him.
Starting point is 01:39:30 Great play there from Aaron Jasek, one out. Yeah, so getting out there best batter, as we said before, Goldbrand's batting 358. Now one for four on the day. Great job there from Jasek to get the ball. Take his time, fire run across the layman. One out now facing Gouchiardo. Yeah, 3.30 hitter.
Starting point is 01:39:55 Played in 31 games, started 30 of those. Erdy's first one in there on the outer half, in for strike one. And he's had two whole runs, two triples, two doubles, and 38 hits total. Second one out there, ball one. One ball, one strike, one out. Nine to two. Here at the top of the sixth. Gouchiardo
Starting point is 01:40:20 playing D.H. Today. Not a guy who takes a lot of walks. Only five. The one-one. Outside ball two. Definitely a guy who wants to swing at pitches. Been hit by four pitches,
Starting point is 01:40:35 or hit by four pitches, actually, this year. 2-1 now, taking his time. Erd he delivers. Great off-speed in there, gets them swinging for strike two. You know, not how to look at it, the Gleak must be very violent,
Starting point is 01:40:48 hit by seven pitches hit by two hit by three hit by four hit by five they're really just hitting batters out there the two two from erdie on its way high ball three full count now erdi trying to get the second out of the inning against gucciardo tough guy to get out and then van ink and ward on deck three two outside ball four erdie trying to find the outside corner that's been so good to pitchers today walks guciardo now van inginvord up who scored last inning now the second baseman batten 333 the third best batter on the team been hit by three pitches so one of the lower ones on the team actually but still taking ten walks very patient batter and he usually doesn't swing at the first strike ball there 1 o count gucciardo on first one out the 1 o ripped to center field great hit there from van inge varen ford and it's a single swenson gets it in and the The first hit allowed from Erddy is a single.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Van Ingevort advances Gooseyard at a second. Now up number five, Nick Kirsch. Dr. Krishik. Erdy really needs a strike out here pretty soon. Obviously, you want to double play, but very difficult to get in college baseball. And those pop-ups will kill them at their deep fly balls to get runners tagging out. The O-O, runners on first and second, one out. Outside corner ball one.
Starting point is 01:42:23 Erdy trying to settle back in after that great job coming into relief in the fifth. 9 to 2, 14 hits now for Grand Valley. The 1-0, Erdy gets the sign. Looking to throwback, doesn't. Great pitch home. It's a ripper to Jasek, turn to Perowski to Lehman. Double play for the Chargers! What a job there from Jasek to Pirovsky to Laman.
Starting point is 01:42:49 And Drew Erdy's out of another one with no runs. Take you to a quick break here. here before the bottom of the six. You're listening to Ready for Hillsdale, 101.7 FM, Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan.

Starting point is 01:43:56 Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7. Hello and welcome back. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM Charger Baseball 9 to 2 here, bottom 6. Zach Warren, going to get another inning of work as he hasn't allowed anything. Chargers no runs since that first inning where they had two. Warren, the only thing you worry about with a guy who doesn't pitch a lot is that arm will start to get tired. I'm sure he'll be sore tomorrow. I'm sure he throws in practice and all that, but in game throwing your best stuff for three innings.
Starting point is 01:44:29 now could be taxing and the guy who just helped turn the double play billy borosky up and as the second baseman you know he might throw a lot but you don't throw very far you're not chucking the ball down to first so different not sure how many pitches he's at right now but he's been making quick work of the chargers nobody on nobody out first pitch of the inning warren delivers a ball to perowski through two innings only thrown 24 pitches that was his 25th right there it's pretty good work as we said he's been doing great three strikeouts last inning. Poroski takes strike one on the outer half, 1-1 now. Make him throw some pitches to you.
Starting point is 01:45:09 Don't swing early. Try to wear him out. Parowski takes a rip at the 1-1, fouled off behind home plate. Now 1-2. Warren looking for his fourth K in a row. And the kid's running to go get the ball. The 1-2 from Warren off. speed high ball two.
Starting point is 01:45:30 Parowski working the count. 2-2. 92 ball game, bottom 6. Prowski, and that's the fourth K in a row for Warren. He's really slicing up the charges here.
Starting point is 01:45:48 It seems like his change between that throw over and then the submarine throw, it's really killing the chargers. And whenever they think they have the time, the ball timed up, next pitch changes it up, swing and miss.
Starting point is 01:46:02 It's a tough visual too, because you think maybe you throw an off speed from that angle. You're trying to predict it. You're thinking too much at the plate. Makes it tough. And oh my goodness, what a pitch there. Started at the head of Aaron Jasek and went into the zone, 0-1 now. Aaron Jasek helped turn the double play along with Peroski last inning.
Starting point is 01:46:22 Sidearm pitch, ripped to the third baseman. Great play from Estrada. Over to Goldbrensen and two quick outs for Warren. It's got a face. It's only been a five-pitch inning so far. catcher number three. Now he's got the catcher John Hunter, two Ks today, or no, excuse me, one K and one walk. So that count last time from 02 up to 3-2 and then was able to get a walk.
Starting point is 01:46:48 He's got to face Warren for the first time today. Excuse me, a seven pitch inning so far. In there, strike for Warren on the outside. That's right. Watch the first one. Now you know that's the sidearm. And it's the sidearm fastball because he's got two different sidearm pitches. The 0-1. inside off speed gets hunter fanning oh two now and this could be the fifth k and three innings for the second baseman zach warren the story of today guys never pitched before
Starting point is 01:47:18 oh two great take there hunter wanted it let it go outside and now it's one two having a great debut for himself two outs no man on nine to two bottom six warren gets the sign heads home ball outside two balls two striking hunter has been here before working the count back from being down oh two trying to find first hit since long time for the charters two balls two strikes two out just here comes the pitch and it's another strike out for zach warren on the off speed feeling himself walking off the mound that's going to take us to the top of the seventh Take you to a quick break here. A message from the Michigan High School Athletic Association promoting the value and values of educational athletics. Hello and welcome back. You're listening to Radio for Yillsdale 101.7 FM Charger Baseball 9 to 2. Top 7 and the Chargers are going to pull out another pitcher Hayden Hoffenpower.
Starting point is 01:49:22 The 6-4 sophomore from Shevenport, Louisiana, C.E. Bird High School. Yeah, I mean, getting some more young guys. It is a bullpen day. And Erie seems to be a relief pitcher only. You only pitch 12 games. He pitched in now seven different games, seven appearances. It maintains his best ERA on the team. Doesn't allow any there.
Starting point is 01:49:48 Great work. It's kind of cool down this offense. Grand Valley, now they'll face Hoffen Power. He's got a chance here to show his stuff. 8.49 ERA. Two wins though, despite that no losses. 11.2 innings pitched, 20 hits and 13 runs. 11 of those earned.
Starting point is 01:50:12 He's going to face number 8 Thielen, center fielder here at the top of the 7th. On its way, a bunt from Thielen in there for strike 1. Gives up a 370 batting average. Getting an opportunity here against the red hot bats, a great. Grand Valley, the O-1, Hoffen Power. In there for strike two. Thielen didn't want to offer, but he went around. Now he's up 0-2 on the first hitter of the inning.
Starting point is 01:50:42 Yeah, I mean, you're ahead right now. Got to use it to your advantage. That's something we haven't really seen Hilsl will be able to do, is have those swinging miss strikeouts right outside the zone. The O-2 from Hoffman-power to Thielen ripped into the right center field gap, and that's going to be at least two for Thielen. Swenson gets a hold of it. He'll throw it in,
Starting point is 01:51:01 Dealing with speeds going to three and he's going to be standing up. Oh my goodness, what speed from Thielen on the triple into the gap? I mean, phenomenal day for him. He is now four for four with a triple. I mean, just feeling himself. Look like they may have been able to hold him to two. Swenson and Hutchinson converging on it. But I tell you what, Thielen had three on his mind and he got all of him.
Starting point is 01:51:26 Yeah, it'll probably go down as a double with an error in the outfield. 15 heads now. Offen Power on his way, ball one there. Number 17, Stimack, the right fielder. Grand Valley is just all over the baseball in their second triple of the day. The 1-0 from Offen Power, ripped, fouled off the shoulder, Stimick. Moves the count to 1-1. It hit his own bat at least twice on that one. Offen Power was ahead of the count 0,2, but Thielen got a hold of one there.
Starting point is 01:52:00 now there's a runner on third no outs one one to stymick curveball in there tanuta buffed it he's going to have to rip one across got him what a play there rocca tanuta babbled it held the runner at third and got the out to layman at first almost had the air there but an absolute canon of a throw rako tanuta a great player over there at third you need a strong arm if you're going to play third base especially with the speed you see college baseball fires went across the diamond for the first out of the inning. The guy in third base didn't even get to run home.
Starting point is 01:52:39 Strata now up before the lineup turns over. Curveball in there for strike one. Great job there, as we mentioned, holding that runner at third, not allowing any more runs. It is 92. You're just trying to play your game. Find a little momentum before your next game. Offen power way inside and high. Ball one.
Starting point is 01:52:57 Yeah, it is a bullpen day. A couple guys who don't usually play are playing today. including figman and left field one ball one strike another great pitch in there strike two ahead of the count once again who figman left fielder has one of the only two or only four hits four hills over the day that double earlier one two count now one out run around third is thieland after his triple the one two rips right back up to the middle and a great play from hoffin power now we got a pickle here on third and they're going to be able to get Thielen. Great tag there from Morocco.
Starting point is 01:53:36 They're going to say he didn't tag him. Rocco said he did. And it is an out call at the end of the day. Great play there on the pickle from John Hunter. And a great play from Hoffenpower. He caught it on the comebacker and then took his time and saw that Thielen wanted to score. Throwing it home instead of throwing it to first,
Starting point is 01:53:57 saves a run. And now you have a runner on second instead of a run. Smart base running. there from Estrada, even though he did just kind of dribble one. He did able to creep around there to second. He's in scoring position now as the lineup turns over for Evan Morrison. Offen Power, though, with a great job with the glove, gets the out. Thelan's triple is negated.
Starting point is 01:54:16 Two outs, runner on, second the O-O-O in there for strike one. Offen Power, trying to have no runs against him after that opening triple. Now two outs, O-1 count to Morrison, who's been a tough guy to get out in this one. Grand Valley did not like that strike call right there. Offenpower will step off the mound. Make sure Estrada's getting back. But a couple of base running ears from Grand Valley, obviously nit picking up 9 to 2 with 15 hits,
Starting point is 01:54:46 but they've been thrown out at home twice now. Yeah, and that's really what the coach is going to pick at anything that's going to be it. Coach always finds something to be angry about after the game. You and I know we've played football, we've played sports allies growing up. They're going to yell you for something no matter what the score is. one to one now is that one's off the plate for ball one hoffin power against morrison
Starting point is 01:55:06 runner on second is estrata the one one on its way inside ball there ball two hoffin power doing pretty good works here in this one like we said gave up that triple but held him at bay and threw him out at first and a great home a great catch there by hunter i mean if that ball goes outside he's in he's in a third base two one now two outs top of seven Hoffen Power ripped one off his mitt. Parowski's got a read on it. Going to be a great play, and it is. Tipped off the mid of Hoffenpower, almost made the same play he just did.
Starting point is 01:55:39 Pulaski stays calm at second, gets it off the tip, fires it to Lehman and the Chargers out of the innings with no runs. Yeah, I mean, just a phenomenal inning. As far as fielding goes for the Chargers, that's their style right there. Great defensive team. Those infillers are good, and those outfielders are also great. Take you to a quick break here for the seventh inning stretch before we go bottom seven. You're listening to Radio Freehieldsdale 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. I'm Gordy. I'm Evan.
Starting point is 01:56:03 The Dean's List with Janice Dean. A Utah man who rescued his brother in an avalanche makes today's Dean's list. Hunter and Braden Hansen were skiing on a snowy hillside when suddenly an incredible mountain of snow started falling and buried Hunter. He says it took seconds for the snow to fall on top of him like concrete. He couldn't breathe or move. Braden couldn't believe what was happening before his own eyes, but he reacted quickly activating a special avalanche beacon, which was able to pinpoint his brother's location underneath all of the snow. Miraculously, Hunter's glove poked out of the snow and he was able to wave in hopes of alerting someone. By the time his brother got to him, Hunter was under two feet of snow. Braden was then able to clear the snow around his brother's head, take off his helmet so that he could breathe. Hunter says he will never forget what his brother did and told him he was on his last breath before being rescued.
Starting point is 01:56:59 He feels very blessed to be alive. Janis Dean, Fox News. Hello and welcome back. You were listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM Charger Baseball. New pitcher in for Grand Valley now, number 45, Ty Randall, 6-3 freshman from Lingsburg, Michigan, Lingsburg High School. and that'll end the day of Zach Warren. Great job pitching, 36 pitches and three innings pitch, five strikeouts for the second basement. Very impressive day for him.
Starting point is 01:57:34 And Grand Valley is going to give an opportunity to another freshman on the mound up 9 to 2 here, bottom 7. Chargers due up is Figman, and then it'll move into NOAC, the DH, and Swenson. A couple lefties in there. as Ty Randall is a righty. Like we said, not many opportunities for him as a freshman, but this is a great opportunity for Grand Valley to kind of find some momentum with these different guys. And Zach Warren gave that to him. Never pitched before college baseball got his opportunity and took it with five Ks and three innings pitch,
Starting point is 01:58:10 no runs, no hits. Jake Figman playing left field today. Another freshman, he'll face off against the big righty Ty Randall. the OO on its way ball one Figman with that double earlier in the game one of the only
Starting point is 01:58:30 four hits for the Chargers down seven here in the seventh the 1-0 pitch from Randall on its way fouled off 1-1 and I'm back unfortunately I do not have the bladder
Starting point is 01:58:49 of Scott Hansen our beloved Red Zone host 1-1-9 now to Figman, who as I mentioned did have that double earlier, trying to recreate something, get a couple hits and some momentum for the chargers who haven't scored since the first. The 1-1 from Randall. Whoa. Tried to get a hold of that curve ball, kind of lost it at the top of it, and it's going to be ball two now, 2-1 over the head of Figman.
Starting point is 01:59:18 I thought I was going to hit him in the head there for a second. Figman didn't even have to duck, and it was pretty much still over his head. Yeah. 2-1 count now No runners on, no out Bottom 7 Figman reps want to right field Deep fly ball
Starting point is 01:59:34 Stimmick's got a read on it First out of the inning As a fly-out for Figman Now up Kaden Noak Great play there by the right field running That ball was all the way on the line He's able to track it down Chargers
Starting point is 01:59:48 Only two runs but they have left Five runners on the base pass And that's something that hurt them last time in their game against Lake Erie even though they were able to win. Chargers is pretty good at getting base for his on, just got to find that guy to get him home. Noak getting his chance here
Starting point is 02:00:04 to face the righty Randall. The O-O.O. All there. Noak wanted that first one and it's a way different pitching angle from the 5-10 Warren who threw it. Side Army threw it over the top and now you've got a 6-3 guy throwing over the top all the time. And Rockerton just sprints out there and grabs that ball.
Starting point is 02:00:24 What a nice guy. The O-1. Grand Valley. This is their fourth pitcher of the day. Noak takes that one high in the infield. Every Grand Valley Lakers talking about it, but Estrada will control it as it's an infield flyout to the third baseman, and the lineup is going to turn over.
Starting point is 02:00:46 And that ball was straight up in the air. They're going to sub in another freshman. They're going to give Dylan Whitefield a chance, subbing in for another freshman, Kurt Swenson, and a lot of freshmen in this game on both sides. he's going to get his opportunity Swenson's done for the day in the seventh He's pinch hitting for him so
Starting point is 02:01:04 could always replace him when we go back out in the field but getting him in at bat here Yeah this is what you like to see You are down like we said 9 to 2 bottom 7 get some guys Some 8bs let him see some pitches In a live game Especially for a freshman
Starting point is 02:01:19 This is his second at bat recorded Although he has been hit by two pitches Outside of those two at bats So four total abats that would be, but only two counted, no hits. And that's going to be his roll over to the pitcher in a one, two, three inning for Ty Randall as we head to the eighth. Chargers down seven in this out-of-conference affair. We'll take you to a quick break. Listen to Radio for Yillsdale 101.7 FM, charger baseball.
Starting point is 02:01:46 I'm Gordy. Fox on Games, your insider's cheat code to gaming. Dreamhaven may break out as the newest publisher of great games, built by one of the founders of Warcraft maker Blizzard, the publisher holding two in-house studios, and according to CEO Mike Morheim, has relationships with multiple independent studios. Starting point is 02:02:10 Their first game, Sunderfolk, is a new take on traditional board games by in-house studio Secret Door, using a television as the board and your mobile devices as your pieces. Speaking to journalist and hosts of the Game Awards, Jeff Keeley, they also announced independent game in their publishing
Starting point is 02:02:25 that has loads of similarities to Blizzard hit Starcraft called Mechabellum. But what they're calling their crown jewel coming from their other studio Moonshot. The first person PVP looter shooter called Wildgate. Jason Chaves and Dustin Browder are the heads of the studio. Or 20
Starting point is 02:02:41 players across five ships face off to secure the valuable artifact and escape. Or you can choose of violence. Amen Dignum. Fox News. Hello and welcome back. Listening ready for Yillsdale, 101.1.7 FM Charger Baseball 9 to 2 here.
Starting point is 02:02:58 Top of the eighth and another arm in for the chargers, Andrew George, guy who saw action in that overtime thriller against Lake Erie, getting another chance as it's just one inning of work for Hoff Power. He's got to face pretty much the meat of the lineup with the 2, 3, 4, starting off with Dreisot. And George is 2 in 1, 13.1 innings pitched, putting a 5.4 ERA. out there. So kind of middle of the pack for the Chargers,
Starting point is 02:03:32 but a guy who's older experience and will definitely play in those conference games in any type of overtime game. Yeah, and it's good to mix in those guys like Erdy and George who you want them to keep fresh, you don't want them taking too many days off pitching. I know he did just pitch Sunday, but get those arms in, get them some action against such a good team too. Yeah, especially those guys who are considered relievers. Because, you know, even when they pitch in regular games, they're still only pitching one and two to iniques.
Starting point is 02:04:00 Syshra up now. First pitch in there, ball one. Sistre really a great day in that two hole for them. That top of the order has been great. Pretty much all the order has been great for Grand Valley today with 15 heads. Second one in there for ball two. Everybody expects Stimick has a hit and Stimick, I believe, has two walks. Stimic 2-0 count now.
Starting point is 02:04:28 Jistra. Or Deistra, sorry. in there ball high looked like it could have been a strike great pitch from george don't love that call right there now he's down 3 o to deistra left fielder today for grand valley the 3 o on its way taken all the way in there for strike one yeah give him right down the middle experienced guys know that when it's 3 o that guy's probably not swinging you got to give them something especially in a 9-2 game they're going to stay patient see what we got here the 3 out there. Ball four, George, with a walk to open the inning.
Starting point is 02:05:08 Yeah, and the... Hillsville bench not very happy with that one. With that one was definitely a ball. Now up a substitution. Number 23, Carter Roman. Subbing in for their best hitter. Number three, Gull Branson. And Carter Roman is a senior from Highland, Michigan.
Starting point is 02:05:26 Yeah, pinch hitting. So once again, you can in the field if you want to put the other guy back in there. but Roman getting a chance. Runner on first is Dykstra, no outs. Runner gets a lead. George delivers the first one in there, ball one. Roman, nine at-bats, no hits, zero batting average. Been struck out three times.
Starting point is 02:05:51 Definitely a guy you want to go after. Trying to find something here. Dykstra on first, as we mentioned, the 1-0 on its way in there for strike 1. Good pitch there, George. He said trying to get out of this inning quick. top of eighth nine-ending ball game you guys have struggled but just trying to find some momentum heading into those conference games the one-one dribbled back to parowski he's going to tag it himself throw it across the base can't make it oh excuse me that was number 23 tie turner in now try to make a play himself there tag the base unable to turn two throw over there is that layman at first there's a lot of subs coming in now Excuse me, no, now that is number 11 Max French at first, so a lot of different players in for the Chargers at the end of this game.
Starting point is 02:06:43 One out though, Turner with the unassisted. Pitch on, it's way in there for ball one. Goushiardo still in at D.H. for the Lakers. Yeah, it was a great attempt by Turner. I mean, definitely you want to tag the bag on that kind of play. You started out so close, but unfortunately couldn't quite get that throw in. Tipped there. Strike one. Great catch there by home. Hunter on the foul ball 1-1 now.
Starting point is 02:07:09 One-out runner-on first is Roman. George, the 1-1, delivers the Gucciardo ball, too, on the outside. Got to get after another guy who's hit 1 for 3 today. Believe it or not, the guys after him are 2 for 3, 1 for 4, and then 4 for 4. Don't want to get into that hard of lineup right there. Throws back, and French can't control it. It's going to give a free base there for Roman. Maybe 2.
Starting point is 02:07:45 He turns, gets the hold-up sign, ball thrown into JASIC. And that's what's tough too, because you got different players in at different positions. George normally used to layman over there at first. French unable to control it, and it's a free bag for Roman. That's always the dangerous thing about throwing back is when guys miss it and you give up extra bases. 2-1 now, running around second. Goushiardo up. George gets the sign from Hunter.
Starting point is 02:08:19 He's coming home. Ball three now, 3-1. and if you walk this guy you do still set up that double play opportunity yeah but when you're down nine to two you really don't want to give any free bases away three one now george to gucciardo roman on second ball there and it's past hunter runner's going to get to third easily you got runners on the corners one out george has got a face van ink and vort now he's got a couple singles i believe in this one. Yes, if you're going to give it that walk, it'd be helpful if he didn't advance a third. One out, runners on the corners, Van Inkenvoort up against George. Obviously, when you're down
Starting point is 02:09:06 9-2, there might not be a lot of upset you haven't hit well today at all. Taking a couple walks, you've definitely gotten on base more than the four hits. Great pitch in there for strike one from George to Van Inkenvort. And on deck, another new player for Grand Valley, number 25, Emmanuel Scott. But defensively for the Chargers, they've played extremely well. The only error is that throwback to first. The 0-1, Van Inkenbor rips to one up the middle. J-Sick will do it himself. Can he double them up?
Starting point is 02:09:34 He can. Great play by Aaron J-Sick to end the inning. Chargers get out unscathed. 9 to 2, headed to the bottom of the 8th. You're listening to Radio for Yillsdale, 101.1.7 FM, Charger baseball. I'm Gordy. And I'm Evan.
Starting point is 02:09:48 Chargers' tournament double play with six to jail. Chargers is coming to the plate here in the bottom of the 8th. Welcome back here. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM, Charger Baseball. Bottom 8, 9 to 2, 15, heads for Grand Valley, just four for the Chargers. Only one air, no airs for Grand Valley. Back up, Ty Randall on the mound. Freshman had a 1-2, 3 inning last time.
Starting point is 02:10:18 He's got to face the top of the lineup, but it's looking a little different than it at the beginning of the game. Chargers making some subs. But a great job to get out of that last inning with the J-SIC, unassisted double. double play to French. Does a great job, swinging it around there. And once again, that middle infield has done a fantastic job getting out. Jane Inkingvor, tough guy to double up and they're able to do it. Yeah, shout out to some other chargers.
Starting point is 02:10:44 Just kind of scrolling through the Hillsdale Chargers Instagram. Ben Haas, number one hammer throw in Division 2, won the indoor champion, was athlete of the week multiple times. and has pired quite a few times this season to move himself from number four all the way up to number one he just keeps to keep getting better keeps PRing continually i mean a guy who's already at the top of his game who keeps getting better that's something dangerous right there new catcher as we mentioned he was on deck he's going to get a chance to catch for randall number 25 Emmanuel scott six foot junior from Chicago, Illinois.
Starting point is 02:11:24 Rocco Tanuta still in for the Chargers. One of the few starters that's still playing. He's over there at third. Now he gets a chance to hit against Randall his first time seeing him in this outing. Nine to two. Bottom eight. Light rain is supposed to start in the next 19 minutes.
Starting point is 02:11:39 I'm here to get the rest of the game in because we've got a turf field here. Not going to get rained out, not heavy enough. But something to watch is the ball starts to get slippery maybe in that top of the ninth inning. Tenoita takes the first one in there for strike one. Marco Tanuda with that double earlier today. Got a couple of hits. Been a bright spot for the Chargers hitting. But like you said, four heads haven't had one in a while,
Starting point is 02:12:03 trying to find a little bit of a spark. The O-1. Tenuto reps won to right field. Tracking it. Nice play there by Stimick. Got a great read on it. Tanuta, very solid piece of hitting, but it's an out. I mean, he was just in the right position and made a great play on it.
Starting point is 02:12:20 If he was either too far back or wouldn't have got the jump on it right away, two would be at first base right now. Now the sophomore playing first base for the Chargers, Max French. Yeah. His first time hitting the day, Subton, last inning defensively, and given an opportunity here in a non-conference game. One out, no man on. French takes the first one in there for a strike,
Starting point is 02:12:47 and Randall's attacking the hitters. He's trying to get out here with his. least amount of pitches get out of this game and a win for grand valley moving in back into conference play the o one to french on its way off speed ball one high high and a little bit inside almost got to him and hit french on his first bad at the day one one out no runners on randall gets the sign outside ball two Staying in for the Chargers, the one old guy up next to bat. Once again, one of the only who has a hit today for the Chargers. French are still going to make a change for that.
Starting point is 02:13:33 Add himself to that list. 2-1 count. Randall delivers in there for Strike 2. Great fastball. 2-2 count now, French. Hasn't swung yet. No, taking his time, watching pitches. Now he's got to go down. They're tied up in the count.
Starting point is 02:13:51 2-2. 1 out. No runners on. Protect the plate. French. Fowls, that one off his foot. Keeps the count. 2-2. He'll take a second. You know, that hurts, just wrapping it off your own foot. 45-degree weather. Feet are cold. This is your second inning in the game. And things are cold.
Starting point is 02:14:17 It hurts just more and more. You take your first swing and it's off your foot. Things reset. 2-2 now. gets the sign outside ball three good take there from french really really good eye got a full count take a walk here help you're on base percentage a little bit and get to charge of started you know haven't had a runner base runner in a couple innings much less a hit three two the payoff pitch on its way from randall to french he rips one high fly ball to the infield shortstop calls him off he'll take
Starting point is 02:14:51 it second out of the inning morrison another one of those where you hit it well with good power but you got so far under it charges the chain to be under a lot of pitches today now augie hudgeonson as we mentioned one of the only guys still in who plays on a regular basis the right fielder with two outs no and on trying to get a little something going yeah one hit one walk on the day for auger starting to rain now tough conditions on the turf feet Great movement on that pitch, but it's in there for a ball. High. Hutchinson, great eye at the plate, guy that walks a lot. Taking his time here, 1-0.
Starting point is 02:15:38 It is raining a little bit, but it's not too windy out there. Outside ball, too, Hutchinson takes that one, moves ahead of the count. Because that ball starts to get wet, it's going to get a little bit more difficult here to control your pitches. Maybe he'll take a little bit off of it. Maybe you'll get a couple walks here. 2-0 to Hutchinson. Outside, once again, 3-0 now. Randall, a guy who hasn't really had a hard time finding the zone,
Starting point is 02:16:05 struggling a little bit with the rain. Hutchinson down 3-0, taken all the way, I'm assuming. Yeah, Hutchinson, despite his 4, or, excuse me, 264 batting average. Takes a strike there, but has a 402 on-base percentage. 18 walks. second of the chargers behind only rock o'd no no one now after the fastball finds the zone from randall hutchinson waiting here great job to hold up but it's a strike i don't know if he said he went around or if it was on the corner i think they were calling that one on the corner he didn't look to
Starting point is 02:16:41 the first base umpire for any confirmation so tough take there hutchinson thought he was walking a first instead the counts full two outs two strikes three balls hutchinson fouls it off working a count here some of the chargers normally are pretty good at have struggled today to work the count did a great job in those first two innings but ever since then really struggled you start to press a little bit more when you get down and you lose that flow and it's nine to two now but augie hutchson full count two outs no men on fall way outside hutchinson works a great at bat and he's going to be on first now up Ty Turner getting his first stab bad of the night. All right. Getting it started. He's one for two with two walks.
Starting point is 02:17:31 Augie Hutchinson and Ty Turner. The guy who started last year coming off the bench this year and playing second base. He's going to get his first stab bad of the day. Ty Turner, number 23, a... It's not, or excuse me, a 152 hitter this year, but with a 282 on-base percent of the time. likes to take walks. Hutchinson on first two outs.
Starting point is 02:17:59 Throwback to Hutchinson. He gets in there safely. He's not taking that big of a lead. I mean, not really much of a reason to throw back there. Yeah, not really much of a reason to steal. It's true. So, interesting. Randall just resets the O-O count on his way to Turner.
Starting point is 02:18:17 Inside, ball one, almost clipped Turner. Takes a deep breath. One-0 count now. Bottom eight. The pitch here from Randall, Turner takes that one outside strike one And that outside corner has been friendly to the pitchers today Yeah outside and low right there is where that umpire seems to
Starting point is 02:18:45 Have drawn a little extra square onto his already's rectangular box One one count now Hutchinson on first two outs Turner's gonna take it on the same spot I'm just gonna give him the sign strike two Been calling that one pretty much all day but Definitely not friendly to the batters No and if you're gonna take it on the same spot. to call it all day that you've got to be consistent and he has been hutchinson takes a little bit of an
Starting point is 02:19:10 extra lead randall delivers the one two to turner fouls it off the catcher's mask he'll take a second looked like it's almost a strikeout turner took a big rip at it count stays at one and two two out's nine to two yeah and as a guy who's taking his first step out of the day i mean it's tough to get used to the umpire when this is the first time you've heard him yeah you're you're watching it from dugout trying to get a sense. If you do get that chance, you never know when you're going to. Now you're in a tough spot down. One, two, two outs.
Starting point is 02:19:43 Randall. Kicks deals, fires. Strike three on the outer corner. All three strikes were there. Randall gets out of the inning. Take us to a quick break here before the top of the night. You're listening to Ready for Yillsdale. 101.7 FM, charge your baseball.
Starting point is 02:19:57 I'm Gordy. I'm Evan. News twice an hour, every hour from SRN News. Catch up on the latest news happening now on WR. a pitch. Me out to the ball game. Hear stories from America's favorite pastime on the old ball game
Starting point is 02:20:20 with Tate Christensen. Here on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.1.7 FM. Welcome back. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM charger. Baseball chargers put in another pitcher on this bullpen day. Patrick McLean, the junior, getting an opportunity here. Top of nine, down nine to two.
Starting point is 02:20:47 Scoring has stopped for three straight innings now. And for the charges, it has stopped for seven straight. Having a tough time after that first inning where they got two. Nine to two, as we said. That trick McLean on the bump. Yeah, McLean, actually one of Hillsdale's best pitchers. 4.66 CRA, 19.1 innings pitched. A very, very common reliever played in 10 games, most appearances of the season.
Starting point is 02:21:16 And I think coach is trying to say, hey, This is over. We're bolster it down, give you one inning, keep you warm for the weekend, but we're not going to give up any more runs. The freshmen have all played, and we need to end this game right here. Yeah, and we've seen that from McLean and Erdy, both getting some innings today. So it should be warm for the weekend where the Chargers, I believe, do have a home series. But it is, or no, it's next weekend. Sorry, they have a home series on Easter break. Chargers are trying to stay hot in GMAC play.
Starting point is 02:21:56 Clean is going to face the new catcher, Manuel Scott. Shout out to Filippo Real. Golfer for the hill still chargers. Shot nine under, school record. And apparently he had three holeouts from over 50 yards. I was talking to another one of the golf guys. Pretty spectacular performance a couple weekends ago down in, a couple weeks ago down in Nashville.
Starting point is 02:22:20 First pitch in there. Whoa, high and inside McLean for ball one. Yeah, I mean, he ducked. It was close to him, but it wasn't close enough for him to have that kind of a reaction. Obviously, no one's throwing at anyone here in a 9-2 out-of-conference game. Second pitch in there for strike one, McLean. One-one count now. No runner's on, no out.
Starting point is 02:22:41 Top nine. Cleen taking his time, getting the sign from Hunter. Grand Valley, and every inning scored either three runs or zero. The 1-1 in there, swinging strike 2. Great pitch. Yeah, as we mentioned, just a couple of big innings for Grand Valley. They have stranded eight so far in this game, but just three innings, the first, the fourth, and the fifth with three runs. Other than that, zero's across the board.
Starting point is 02:23:11 Like I said, charges with two in the first. None since. The 1-2. In there for strike three. Backwards, Clay for McLean in the first out of the ninth. Got them looking, not swinging. I mean, it was pretty over the plate. I don't really know if he was looking for a call there
Starting point is 02:23:26 or if that was just a great pitch by McCleine and didn't see it coming. Yeah, and it's tough too because you got to swing and stuff on the outside half, as we've talked about kind of all day. Now up the center fielder, Thielen. Yeah, four for four, the center fielder. With a triple. Trying to keep things going.
Starting point is 02:23:46 Takes a cut of the first one in there for strike one. As we said, he did have that triple. Last time was stranded thrown out at home trying to make up for the base running error. Go five for five. Some great defensive play here for the Charters today. The O-1, high. Tanuta's got a read on it towards the cage.
Starting point is 02:24:07 Foul. Now down O-2. Feeling home run shy of the cycle. Yeah. Yes, he is. He's hit a single, a double, and a triple. I think he has two singles, I believe. He's been swinging hard, you can tell.
Starting point is 02:24:25 He's down O-2. now though McLean, a veteran pitcher for the charges. As I mentioned, a lot of games appeared in as a reliever. Try to shut the door. You know, two in there. Another backwards K, and that's two on the inning for McLean. Like you said, a guy who's experienced one of Hillsdale's better reliever pitchers, and he's getting after him.
Starting point is 02:24:46 Grand Valley hasn't seen this kind of speed, this kind of accuracy all day, and McLean having a great outing for himself so far. Two backwards Ks now, and now up another sub. Noah Lasky. 6-4-225 freshman from Temperance, Michigan, Bedford High School, getting an opportunity to face up against McLean, who has just struck out two red-hot bats of Thieland and,
Starting point is 02:25:10 or excuse me, just Thielen. It was a sub before him, but Thielen is a tough guy to get out, hasn't all day, and a great job there for McLean. Yeah, Laskey, one for three on all of his appearances. One hit, three-out bats, that's all he's got on the season. Getting a chance here. Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium. TFO Partners Field against McLean.
Starting point is 02:25:34 Struck out his last two. 1-0 count now. Swinging strike. Great pitch by McLean. He's been getting guys to swing and miss, which has been rare with 15 hits for Grand Valley. Nine runs off of it. McLean showing off some good stuff,
Starting point is 02:25:50 building some confidence, as we mentioned, heading into the weekend. Again, he is one of Hillstall's starting pitchers, So one one in there. Great pop on that one. Strike two now. One two. McLean trying to have three strike out any. You do have high expectations whenever he gets into the game. Trying to strike out the side.
Starting point is 02:26:08 McLean. Two outs. The one two on its way. Right back up the middle. Going to be a tough play for Turner. Stops it from the outfield sliding back. Great effort there from Ty Turner. Lasky able to run it out, but a fantastic effort there by second.
Starting point is 02:26:24 And McLean gives up. his first hit by his mitt and then Turner stopped it from getting all the way to center but couldn't really throw one good from his knees. Yeah was a phenomenal stop. The throw not quite hard enough but I mean that's an impossible throw. And they're going to sub in a pinch runner Nolan Alvord 510 freshman from Fenton, Michigan, Fenton High School and then Estrada the third basement up to hit. Two outs. One man on. 16th hit of the day. Clean trying to get a strikeout. He is third of the inning.
Starting point is 02:27:03 Ripped to the second baseman Turner. This one's more rhythm. He'll throw it to second. Close play. But he gets him. Jason is able to stay on the bag. Thought he might go to first. He doesn't.
Starting point is 02:27:13 That's going to take us to the bottom nine. Listen to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Charge your baseball. I'm Gordy. I'm Evan. Starting point is 02:28:15 And Sundays at 3 a.m. on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Hello, and welcome back. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale. 101.7 FM, charger baseball, 9 to 2, bottom 9. Randall, once again, his third inning of work, he's all zeroes for him against the Chargers, only four hits, as we said. He's got a face.
Starting point is 02:28:42 Aaron Jasek just made a nice play there at short. He's been great defensively, see if he can get on base once again. O for two on the day, but does have either a walk or a hit by pitch. So not hurting the on-base percentage too bad. He's got an opportunity to kind of lead things off. have seven runs in them. It's got to start with the first hitter. Yeah, it does.
Starting point is 02:29:03 And I mean, if you're going to get seven runs, you're not going to get seven runs for two outs. Nope. Jasek. I'm trying to start things off for the Chargers, shortstop. One of those guys that's still in the game that plays almost every game and played a lot last year even as a freshman. Yep. Played shortstop. I mean, great field are out there, even as a freshman like you talked about.
Starting point is 02:29:28 The O.O. Randall's first. first one's in there for a ball. Jasek trying to find something, as we said. It's down seven, nine to two here, bottom nine. And a great base runner once it doesn't get on base. Obviously not as important when you're down so big. Good rip there from Jasek goes foul over the dugout of the Chargers.
Starting point is 02:29:54 Yeah, had a lot of underneath hits, been underneath the ball all day, kind of skying them. I'd really just like to see him get on top of it and just level it out, even if it gets an out. The 1-1, Randall to J-Sick, hit him. No, he had to duck under it. That off-speed from Randall, we've seen that a couple times where he doesn't have a good grip on it, throws it over the head of J-Sac.
Starting point is 02:30:17 Almost hit J-Six bat when he ducked. I think that the catcher hit him when he reached up for, but there was no swings, there's no interference. 2-1 now after the wild pitch. Randall on the way. Inside strike. J-Sik a little gun-shy after almost getting hit there. and her half strike now two two and now the pitch looks really far inside but it was a great job of framing
Starting point is 02:30:43 it by the catcher 2-2 to jacic no outs bottom nine randall gets the sign on the way jacic rips one to center field it's going to be a tough play what a play out there by fieland have yourself a day makes the out on a well-hit ball one of the best we've seen today really from jacic gets a good read on it gets them out and that was i mean a phenomenal hit unfortunate player in right place right time but can't be upset about that at bat right then yeah and the outfield was slightly shifted over there looking for the pole from jacic feeling it's a great read on it and gets the out now john hunter up one out no man on nine to two john hunter trying to find his first hit of the day on his way outside wild pitch ball one yep getting a new ball out i think it's good getting
Starting point is 02:31:37 those new balls out because they get a little bit slippery when they're wet and ran in just a little bit but trying to get it dry one maybe throw some more strikes yeah it's the same thing for football as a quarterback you you want that new football in as soon as you can the rule in football is only oh as we're talking john hunter rips one into the gap and that's going to go off the wall and a double for hunter how about that a stand-up double for john hunter ripped that one to the wall it's going to be two bags and now up number 14 figman now running We're in a scoring position. Even if you don't win this game, get yourself a little morale boost.
Starting point is 02:32:16 Score a couple rhymes going into that next game. Right as we were mid-conversation about the rain, Sean Hunter rips one into the gap. Now Jake Figman and left today. The freshman getting the start, getting an opportunity, and he's another guy. Only five hits for the charges. He's got one of them, and it was a two-bagger.
Starting point is 02:32:33 So what's the rule about the new ball and football? I never got to that one. Oh, yeah. You can only change it out after a first down. Oh, really? Yes, or an out-of-play. so if you threw it out of bounds and it wasn't a first down would you get if it's out of play you can reset it got the o-oh inside a figman ball of one almost hit there again a lot of close calls nobody's been
Starting point is 02:32:54 one player been hit today not too hard but on an off speed but almost hit there again quite a few close calls today the one oh hunter on second figman on the plate there takes another one two oh You're going to have a rally. You need base runners. John Hunter gave that to him, and now Figman with an opportunity. Two balls, no strikes. One out, runner on second nine to two in the bottom of the ninth. Deals home.
Starting point is 02:33:25 Figman rips one to the third baseman. Hunter has to go back to second, and he jumps high, has to tag him. Got him. Figman kind of looked like he was trying to avoid it. But it's going to be an out there, kind of a wild throw. Great job there by the replacement, first baseman Roman. Yeah, it was a nice catch, nice tag. very aware of the situation
Starting point is 02:33:44 unfortunate i think that if you would have slid he might have been safe but you don't usually think to slide in the first base that's such a hard base running technique now the rain is really coming down with two outs left in this game one out left in this game or why you have one out two outs on the bottom of the ninth and kaden noak the dh up are on second ball outside and this is where it gets tough for randall you have to just get one more out but you're up seven got everything going but it is rain is starting to come down really starting to come down one oh count to noak ripped on for a strike great cut there try to take that one out of the stadium instead of strike one yeah trying to get his first hit of the day he's over two with a walk filling in for
Starting point is 02:34:36 zack kent one of the leading hitters for the chargers at d h noak swings it's going to be strike 200 is going to get in there to third. Smart base running, and that's another aspect that's tough is the catcher. Yeah, and smart base running by a guy who is a catcher himself. New as soon as that thing took a bounce, he was not getting up fast enough. Not the fastest guy in the world, but when you know how to base run, that's almost more important. Down to the last strike for the Chargers, one to two. Two outs.
Starting point is 02:35:08 Run around third is Hunter. Randall trying to complete the game here. The one-two on its way. Ball outside. Chargers stay alive. Caden Noak, as we mentioned, over two on the day with a walk. Two balls, two strikes, two outs. Bottom nine, John Hunter on third.
Starting point is 02:35:33 Randall gets the sign on its way. Strike three looking. That'll do it. Chargers lose nine to two in this out-of-conference affair. Thank you guys for tuning in.
