Starting point is 00:00:00 The following is a special presentation of WRFH Sports. Sam, give me your thoughts on today's game. Yeah, you know, I think we've got two really solid rosters coming up against each other. You know, conditions are a little spotty today. It's very overcast. It's a little chilly, a little bit of a bite in the air. It's very wet. Look to see players playing a little more carefully on that defense with those wet balls.
Starting point is 00:00:45 It's going to be, yeah, it's going to be an interesting one today. I'm just excited to get started. went to see some ball. Sam, I tell you what, back in my playing days, I remember the, I remember when you have a cold, kind of moist day like this, the ball didn't fly as far as you normally expected it to, especially during those summer months. What are the players going to have to contend with today? Yeah, well, I'll tell you what, there's a reason you're playing days are behind you,
Starting point is 00:01:10 bud. Oh, man, I tell you what, a couple hours with this guy, you know, with friends like this, who needs enemies? No, but in all honesty, I think we're looking at a long slog. I think players are going to be, you know, they're going to be feeling it a little at the end. I think everyone's going to be ready to wrap this up. Everyone's a little cold. But, you know, I expect a lot of intense playing from both Hillsdale and Lake Erie. I think everybody wants to win this game, you know?
Starting point is 00:01:41 I mean, it's an important game in the series. Absolutely. You get Saturday baseball. You get all the students. We got a packed house here today at Linda and Glendon. Lenda Hill Stadium, Hillsdale, Michigan. Beautiful day. Little cloudy, little dreary.
Starting point is 00:01:56 But yet, we still got baseball. And Sam, that's good enough for me. Hey, any weather is baseball weather. You know what? Absolutely. Absolutely. Take a look at here. We've got the starting lineups for the Lake Erie College Storm. We've got...
Starting point is 00:02:15 We've got Yankovic. Batting first. We've got Geis, batting second, Christ, betting third, Solac, betting fourth, Esposito. I'm going to try hard to not make too many jokes about that one today. They've got, excuse me all, Benning, second. We've got Silva batting eighth, and we've got Jones batting ninth.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Sam Wallace is going to take us away with the Hillsdale starting lineup. And for your Hillsdale Chargers, Batting first, we have Sowers. Batting second. Tanuta. Batting third. Kent. Batting fourth. Layman.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Batting fifth. Hutchinson. Batting sixth. Millard. Batting seventh. Swenson. Betting eight. Baratsky.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Batting. Nighting. We've got Higden today. Beautiful, Sam. I'm very excited for today's game. So I heard, I went down and I talked to the Lake Erie College Storm pitching coach. We had a little talk about the starting picture of today. He said that he's been a little bit of a funk lately,
Starting point is 00:03:25 but he actually connected with his high school coach, Dick Crinkleberry. And he said, he said, look for him to come out today. And have a really solid showing. He's had a couple problems with his mechanics. Yeah, we did see that, didn't we? Yeah, a couple.
Starting point is 00:03:47 We saw that in Wormwoods. We saw him looking at this. He kept rehearsing a certain motion. I don't know if you saw that. But he kept a hurting a certain motion with his leg kick. And also he had a couple tells that I'm hearing about with his curveball. He twitched a glove a couple times as he's adjusting his grip on the ball. And I think he's worked on those two things.
Starting point is 00:04:11 I would look, Sam, I would look for this kid to make a solid appearance today and make it difficult on the chargers to score some runs. Yeah, no, I did hear about those tells. I also heard he's been experimenting with his diet a lot more. There's something about, I think he eats raw fish. Is that right? Raw fish? It helps with the velocity.
Starting point is 00:04:32 It does something to your muscles. Wow. It strengthens the tendons, I believe. But yeah, I've heard he's been, you know, he used to run a fruity pebble heavy diet. Okay, yeah, I got you. And he's transitioned a little more to that raw tuna. Yeah, no, I know what that transition is like. You know, you grow up and as an athlete, you're working hard to do everything you can to gain the edge.
Starting point is 00:04:56 And, yeah, absolutely, fruity pebbles. They're great. You know, you want them. But the nutrients, the nutrient game just isn't there with the fruity pebbles. Ultimately, you've got to make some sacrifices if you want to be one of the best in the game. And this kid has done just that. He's become one of the best in the game. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:05:11 All right. The chargers are taking the field. Number two, Tanuda. Number 17, Zach Kent. He's our designated hitter today, batting third. At first base, we have Will Laman. Augie Hutchinson, heading out to the outfield. Our dear friend Will Millard, catching today, he takes the field.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Swenson heading out there, Art Swenson. Billy Paroski's heading out, taking his trot to the field. Aaron Jasek heading out. And our pitcher today, Daniel Higden. Jack, what do you expect to see today from Higden, especially as we enter this first inning? Gosh, you know, that is difficult, Sam. You know, I saw him pitch a couple weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Really strong performance. Pitched seven innings with only one earned run. Especially in this time of year, you know, that's really wonderful. As we pause to honor our nation with this national anthem. Welcome back to Charger Baseball, everybody. We're so happy to have you with us. We hope you have as good of a time as we are. Absolutely, Sam.
Starting point is 00:06:44 I tell you what, nothing better than being at the ballpark, especially when we've in Hillsdale, Michigan, had a bit of a long winter, I would say. And it's great to be out here playing a little baseball. Spring is here. Spring is here, you know, despite the best efforts of a certain groundhog I heard of. I was not too pleased with him, nor was the baseball team. I think they actually had something to say about that little groundhog.
Starting point is 00:07:08 And, you know, the messy start to their season, shall we say. No, it was not fun to play in those prolonged snows. And I know they had a couple strong words. for Punksitani. But ultimately, you know, we move past it. That's what this charger team is all about resilience. That strength and rejoicing in the challenge. And, you know, Punksitani really shoved those challenges on them.
Starting point is 00:07:33 But that's when we show the most of strength. Absolutely. And I tell you what, strength, rejoicing the challenge. I'm looking for Daniel Higden to rejoice in today's challenge of the Lake Erie College Storm. Give me your thoughts. Oh, I mean, you've got a stacked lineup here. You got Christ, you got Esposito, you got Espinosa.
Starting point is 00:07:51 It's going to be a struggle. It's going to be a challenge. And I know this guy a little bit. I've talked to him once or twice. He certainly rejoices in that challenge. And he's strong. I've seen him put up some weights. Really just a stud player.
Starting point is 00:08:06 We're watching him in warm-ups now. And he looks powerful. He looks mighty on that mound, really. Beautiful. Throw a second from Will. Yeah, Will's a man. I love that guy. All right, here we go. We've got first pitch of the game. Sam Welles. Take us away.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Daniel Higden facing off against Yankevich. It should be a good showing today as he steps up into the left-hand batters box. We're underway. First pitch, the kicker pitch. And that's going to miss. A little down and end, would you say? Yeah, I tell you what, that's always a good play, even if you don't get strike called. It's tempting, but he's never going to bite at that first pitch. pitch two that that did not get in there either i think that was a little outside absolutely yancovitch doing a good job yeah that's a really good either lean-off hitter spot you're trying to get your team a few good looks yeah i mean i mean that lead off spot is all about getting on base the pitch comes in that one's going to clip the edge for the strike one that looks something to me almost like a backdoor cutter
Starting point is 00:09:08 or something like that it had a little bit of right-to-left movement his cut game is is good there's a lot of that horizontal longitudinal movement pitch two foul off down the third baseline. Whoa, give that fan of contract. Nice catch out there in foul territory. Count evens at two and two.
Starting point is 00:09:31 As the kick and the pitch. That's going to miss, so we move to a full count here with no outs, nobody on. You're in the first inning. Payoff pitch, comes in there, fouled straight back. Sam, I can't phrase
Starting point is 00:09:47 this leadoff hitter Yankevich enough, I mean, to come in and... It wasn't that bad? Already have a seven pitch at bat. What's going to be a seven pitch at bat at least? Given your team the looks they need. Exactly. No, I really appreciate what he's doing. Payoff pitch. Put in play down to shortstop. Gloved nicely and sent over to first.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Little offline, but our first baseman there makes a great catch. Sam, I tell you what, that was a close play. Glad the Chargers could pull it out, though. Yeah, it's a really wonderful. a wonderful way to keep that play live by Lehman. And what a difference that is, you know, to start the game off, getting the vibes going, the mojo going, to make that play versus let it be an infield hit on a seven-pitch at bat?
Starting point is 00:10:30 Oh, of course. The difference in that is just massive, right? I mean, as a lead-off hitter, Yankovitch clearly has some speed, as that one's put into play, also to shortstop. They're keeping him busy. Throw-overs a little better this time. Easy play for Lehman as we go to two outs on one pitch. Sam, they all look the same of the score,
Starting point is 00:10:47 I tell you what, you got one, seven pitch at bat, full count, six, three, and now you've got one pitch at bat, six, three, there's two down in the first inning. Two down already, and, you know, after a lengthy first at bat, I think it's really important that he got that one pitch, one pitch out on our second batter here. This is Christ stepping up to the plate as he started the hands, but he didn't go, and it's ball one. Sam, I heard that Christ is looking to be the savior in today's game. He certainly is.
Starting point is 00:11:20 You can see the hunger in this kid, and I really appreciate it. It's an underdeveloped passion, you know. He's looking to be the man to put this team on this back. You know, they put him in the third slot here as the pitch comes. He did not go. That's going to be ball two, two and one. I tell you what, back at me, like you said, there's maybe a reason my playing days are behind me, but when I had that high cheese, that was tough to lay off.
Starting point is 00:11:49 It's always tough to lay off right at the eyes. And as he gets another one there, that's going to be ball three. Three balls in one strike with two outs to Jay Christ. Higden putting up a really good first inning here. That's going to get in there for strike two. Second full count of the inning. I'll tell you what, they're definitely working him. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:12 They're making him workhorse out there. Absolutely, Sam. Taking his time a little bit, the kick and the pitch, swing, and it's put into play to third. That's going to get through for a base hit. Is he thinking to? He rounds, and he's going to head back. That's a single for Christ there. Sam, you know, that was a good piece of hitting.
Starting point is 00:12:33 And honestly, it's tough because the last two balls, last two balls put in play were grounders to the shortstop, you know, and that one just happens to be a little further left, a little more late on that one. It was right in that same direction, for sure. Right. You know, you got to wonder if all those extra pitches early gave them a couple extra looks. Exactly. The pitch, strike one gets in there. That was a nice slider, Sam.
Starting point is 00:12:56 That was a gorgeous one. A lot of bite to that, a lot of zest on it. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. And it's been right back to work. No balls in one strike. That's going to get a little bit outside. Sam, I understand. He doesn't evens at one.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Yeah, I understand what he's doing. You know, he got that first pitch on the edge, and he's going. and how much more can I get away with, right? How much more, yeah. It's testing out that Ump's zone as that one's fouled off down the first base line. Long shot, but well-fowned. Count moves to 1 and 2. Higden's had a long first inning here.
Starting point is 00:13:36 You've got to wonder if his pitch counts is going to start irking him as we get into the middle innings. Sam, speaking of pitch count, I'm thinking pitch clock. What are your thoughts on the new changes to base? baseball, been in place for a year or two now. Still, as, you know, the romantic I am about baseball, it's tough. That one's tapped back up to the pitcher, and he's going to run over, flip it to the first baseman. Chargers get off the field swiftly, and they're going to get in the box. Absolutely, and that's going to be good to get down to the, get back in, up to the plate,
Starting point is 00:14:06 holding them to no runs, only one hit, no errors. Sam, that pitch clock I mentioned, give me your brief thoughts about that before we go for break. real quick, you know, my quick little spiel. I think it's fine. I think, you know, it speeds up that pace of game. And, yeah, I think it's good for the game, especially when you get to that professional level. But we'll talk about this more. I'm Sam, you're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.

And welcome back to Linda and Glenda Hill Stadium. Charge your baseball, Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.6. 7 FM. Chargers held. Delake Erie College Storm to no runs. One hit, no errors. Now go to work in the bottom of the first. Sam, take us away. Tyler Sowers is leaving us off. He's actually a freshman, this kid. And, you know, what a great thing for him. You know, to be, he's clearly putting in all that work and to be leading off as a freshman. It's something special. He's going
Starting point is 00:16:10 to take a cut at that first pitch. Miss. No balls. One strike. Hey, coming up swinging, I love that out of it. Coming up swinging is awesome. Here is the old one. And missed outside, one ball, one. So we got one in, what in one, Sam? Your victory would tie them with Lake Erie in the standings. Very critical series for both teams.
Starting point is 00:16:33 One ball, one strike. As that clips the edge of the zone, it's going to be one ball and two strikes. That's kind of what we're all tradition to look in so far. And help. Pay off pitch. Did not get in there. Two balls, two strikes.
Starting point is 00:16:50 It's all going to even out there. Absolutely, Sam, you're the lead-off hitter. I mean, gosh, what are you thinking here? You got two strikes on you. How do you work it so that you do the best you can? That's going to be put into play, a high drive, and it's tracked down by the right-fielder. One away.
Starting point is 00:17:08 You know, I think your job as the lead-off hitter is to definitely give your dugout, those looks that they can, work. pitch or a little bit and of course try to get on base as always absolutely absolutely here comes roco tenuta a sophomore infielder as he steps up into the righty batter box with one away here in the first inning the pitch started the hands but he did not go and that's going to get in there for a ball no strikes rockos at a bartlett illinois actually went there on business one time one full town They have a great aquarium, I understand.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Yes, absolutely. I actually went there business trip back in 2005. As it gets to two balls and no strikes. And, yeah, it was a great time. Bartlett, Illinois, wonderful town. For all you listening, definitely go visit there. See the hometown of Rocco Tanuta. The pitch.
Starting point is 00:18:03 It's outside again. Three balls in no strike. You said 2005? 2005, yeah. That was back in my lawyer days. Oh, right. You were doing that. that case about the guy who's importing exotic animals, right?
Starting point is 00:18:18 Yes, yes. That was a crazy time. The pitch. That's going to get in there for strike one, three balls and one strike. Glad to be in the commentary game now, Sam. I tell you what, I've enjoyed baseball a lot more than those exotic animals. Yeah, I mean, it was like spiders and stuff, right? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:34 It was gross. The pitch, and he knew it. Ball four as a walk. Rocco Tuna gets on base, and we continue with the inning. Number 17, Zach Kent, the senior. Another wonderful guy. Sam, we've only got one out in the inning. We've got a man on first.
Starting point is 00:18:58 We've got a big hitter like Zach Kent. They've got to be looking to make some damage here early in this game. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, this is an opportunity that they need to pounce on. Absolutely. Strike one gets in there. He's got three homers and 32 RBIs. He's got to be looking for him to make some damage here.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Absolutely. With one on and one out. Yeah, go ahead, change. He just really knows what he wants. Pitcher comes set. First baseman's holding him over there. Pitcher comes set, yeah, the pickoff attempt. Yeah, see, we knew that was coming. Look at us.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Yeah. Well, I think it's the mustache. It's got to be the mustache. It gives him power. Yeah, it gives him a lot of power. Yeah. Honestly, Zach Kent. Zach Kent has that magic mustache.
Starting point is 00:19:46 We love to see it. I'm looking for him to take a big hack here. He didn't, but strike two gets in there. No balls and two strikes. Only one out, and a man on first due to the walk. First basement is still holding him there. Pretty close to that bag. He's got about a six-foot lead, maybe seven-foot.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Zach Kent goes set, and he fouls that one off. Little jam shot and hits the opposing dugout. His hands are going to be stinging after that one. Yeah, I tell you. That's that jamage that we talk about. No gloves either. If you notice that, it's a bold choice. And I've got to respect it.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Especially this temperature out here. Especially in this temp. Yeah, I mean, I've recommended, I don't know, but bold, manly, definitely. Pitcher's taking a lot of time. That pitch comes up and in towards the hands. And that's going to be ball one. One ball, two strikes, one out. With a man on first.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And the 1-2 delivery. Pitcher comes set, the delivery. And excellent take by Kent there. Sam, I got to tell you what. Could have fooled me. 0-2-1-2. Pitcher's definitely in the driver's seat. 2-2, that's where it kind of starts to even out and go, hey, we got a little bit of a chess game on our hand.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Yeah, we got a chess game for sure. You've got to be thinking, Zach Kent is definitely thinking about the meta game here. Trying to think one step ahead. The pitch put in play. Bobbled by the shortstop, and he's going to get in there. A sure double play turned into an infield hit on the error. We'll see if they credit him with that with the error. But for now, it's one out.
Starting point is 00:21:37 And Sam. One out and a man on first and second. And Sam, we got, yeah, we got first and second. One out. Chargers looking to make it dead. Put up a crooked number in this bottom of the first. Absolutely. It's so important to come out swinging and pack a punch early on. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:21:56 As health is definitely struggling a little bit, I think it might be a bit of a command issue. As the pitch comes in and that's going to get the upper corner of the zone. As someone with a good view back here in the box, that one looked a little outside to me. You know, I thought that was a generous call too. Yeah, okay. All right. Glad it wasn't just me. As he's got two runners to worry about now, but the pitch comes. Heyman takes a nice cut there. but unfortunately
Starting point is 00:22:27 swinging a miss as it's no balls and two strikes we've got one out here a man on first and a man on second due to the walk and the error at shortstop as the Chargers look to do some damage Helt takes a look at second and delivers that's going to be put into play down to right field it's deep he's back to the fence
Starting point is 00:22:48 it's gone three run shot for Lehman the Chargers take a commanding lead Wow, did you see that opposite field? Wow, Sam, I tell you what, a lot of power. When I saw that come off the bat, I didn't immediately think home run. I did not think home run on that.
Starting point is 00:23:07 I thought that was going to be caught. But wow, the carry. Yeah. Down to the shorter end of the field for sure. And if we look out to that American flag in deep rights in a field, we see the wind. Now, probably still would have gone out either way, but the wind certainly was helping there. Certainly pushing it in that direction a little bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:26 But we love to see that. So already we've got three nothing. Hillsdale putting up a crooked number in the bottom of the first. Just what they were looking to do. And here we only got one out, Sam, still. One out. The inning's going to continue as the senior Augie Hutchinson steps up to the plate and takes strike one. I'm sorry, that's a ball.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Wow. Generous call by the hump there. It's going to be two balls and no strikes. The pitch. Starts the hands. Stopped, but it's going to be called a strike. anyway and I tell you why he didn't look that enthused with that umpire there yeah yeah you know sometimes you got to be careful in the first inning you don't want to get on his bad side right no certainly
Starting point is 00:24:05 but you also got to make your grievances known a little bit it's a tough walk to line right it's tough line to walk excuse me absolutely I mean you know you have to stay respectful and he's gonna start the hands there though but that one he did hold up and it's gonna be a full count now payoff pitch coming up to hutchison payoff pitch is coming up to hutchison The senior, the kick, the pitch, and that's going to be ball four. I tell you what, Helt is really struggling with his command here. Do you think he locks that in coming into the, you know, as he gets out of this inning and into the other earlier innings?
Starting point is 00:24:48 You know, if I have any experience to offer here, any words of wisdom, it would be to sometimes one can come out a little tight, a little nervous. and then if things don't really go perfectly in the first couple innings as they have not for them, you know, sometimes that really just kind of shakes you out of your funk a little bit, and you can come to play for the rest of the ballgame, sometimes that doesn't happen either. So we'll just have to see how he adjusts to the situation that's been put in. I mean, a three-run shot with only one out in the first inning is definitely going to not do much for your confidence.
Starting point is 00:25:23 As Will Millard, the catcher, steps up to the plate. You know I actually hung out with him the other day? Oh, really? It's a great dude. He's a really fun guy. Yeah. Yeah, where did you guys hang out? We hung out in the suites where he lives.
Starting point is 00:25:36 I was there, spent some times from friends there, and he came in. And he's a wonderful guy. But he's got one strike now. That's not going to help him is he takes a nice hack. Good, healthy cut at that pitch. But it's zero balls and two strikes now with, again, one on and one out. And do you think we see sort of a return? cycle here? I mean, we're obviously looking for him
Starting point is 00:26:00 to get a base knock. Absolutely. You know, it's tough to say as the two-pitch or two-strike pitch comes down the pipe. It's a good take by him as that, again, missed the zone. You know, I've noticed he's really been missing in that
Starting point is 00:26:16 outside zone. Yeah. He's pounding, you know, he should be pounding the plate. He's kind of just pounding that left-handed batters box. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. I think he's leaning heavily on that slider. He's got a quick delivery. That's going to be a line drive and easy double play as Hutchison got caught between first and second on a soft lime drive.
Starting point is 00:26:39 So that'll take the wind out of Hillsdale College's sales. And we're going to go to break. I'm Sam Wallace. This is Charger Baseball. You are listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. We'll be right back. You are listening to Soundtracks for the Skyline, a genre of music for each city. I'm Lily Faye Kramer on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Situated in rural Idaho, the popular ski town of Sun Valley hosts a lively music scene. Each summer, the town hosts the Sun Valley Music Festival, a classical music festival that is free and open to the public. For four weeks in August, the festival hosts a full professional orchestra, with members from top symphonies from across the U.S. Yo-Yo Ma and EFoc Perlman are two guest artists they've had from over the years. In partnership with the festival, the Music Institute allows students to participate in a chamber program
Starting point is 00:27:43 with professional musicians from the orchestra as their coaches. Besides the music festival, the neighboring town of Ketchum hosts weekly Ketchum alive where they have a local band or DJ play in the town square during the summer nights, which is quite popular amongst locals and tourist alike. For a town, this remote, Blaine County has quite the music scene. I'm Lily Fay Kramer, and this has been Soundtracks for the Skyline on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7.
Starting point is 00:28:14 Welcome back to Charger Baseball. I'm Sam Wallace here with my partner, Jack Sullivan, as Higden takes the mound again, and the Lake Erie College Storm try to bounce back after a, tumultuous first inning. And we've got Esposito standing in, starting to the top half of the second. First pitch, nice velocity there,
Starting point is 00:28:42 but it missed just a little bit, and that's going to be ball one. Absolutely, Sam. All they're looking to do is come out here and protect the lead that they've built so early in this game. Oh, of course. That went a little low.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Definitely a little low. The pitch, he started the hands to no avail. That's going to be strike one, two balls and one strike. Esposito, the right fielder here. Standing in the right, he batters box. As the pitch comes, that's going to be a little high. And it's three balls, only one strike. And, you know, something you really don't want to do.
Starting point is 00:29:29 as he swings and misses to send it to a full count. It's something you really don't want to do after a big first inning is let them catch up right away. Absolutely. Payoff pitch. That's going to be a little inside and it's ball four as Esposito takes his base, which is going to bring up Simcheck, Mitchell Simcheck. Not good. I mean, obviously you want to keep the momentum rolling.
Starting point is 00:30:06 And that's going to be a little flare out to right field. He's back to the wall. Caught it. Caught on the warning track. Send in and Esposito's kept at first. Really nice play. Way to get that in quickly. Taya, Ogie Hutchinson got doubled up at the end of the last inning, made up for it very quickly with a great catch of the warning. Absolutely made up for it. skip for breakfast. So there's one out, Israel Espinoza back. Here's Espinosa. Israel Espinosa. Our boy, as the pitch comes set, and that's going to be grounded out to shortstop. One, and two, but it's a little high, and he came off the bag.
Starting point is 00:30:49 They got the lead runner, but it's going to go down as a fielder's choice. As Espinona's legged it out and the difficult throwover from the second baseman, uh, that they don't hit the double play. And we've been seen. a little inaccuracy from those middle infielder's coming down to first. Is that going to be a concern going forward? Absolutely. You know, counting the chickens before the hatch a little bit, you know, trying to get that double play, not really focusing much on the accuracy.
Starting point is 00:31:17 I understand there's urgency. There's urgency, but I think they got a little too focused on the cheese that they forgot about the trap. As strike one comes down, he's swinging. There's a man on first with one. or two house. Excuse me. This is Sebastian Silva. As the O1 comes in and it goes, O2, is that got the zone. That was a really slow little floater. Did you see that? Yeah, you know, I tell you what, I had this.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I mean, I almost swung. It looked like it was going so slow. And he takes second. Oh, but he plunked him up high. I tell you what's him. If there's a time to do that, it's when the guy is trying to take two on you. Absolutely. I mean, you might as well. Might as well give it to him. And, uh, baby, show why you don't mess with our boy number four out of the mound yeah i mean you you uh you mess with the bully get the horns absolutely higden's got some horns over there so aspenosa was trying to steal second and the pitch came in and hit sylva up high and he's taking some time with the trainer over there he looks like he's okay i don't think they're putting in a sub yet but he's definitely taking his time
Starting point is 00:32:32 over there. He's definitely in a lot of pain. But he's standing there on first, and he'll stay. Hegdon from Paducah, Kentucky. Western Kentucky, up by the Ohio River. There he is, I understand it. A lot of whiskey there. Absolutely, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Two on and two out. As Higden sends the pitch in, and that's a popped up out to right field, down in the corner, and that's caught for out number three. Huddison making plays. Hutchison's making plays. Way to get out of that jam, Hayden.
Starting point is 00:33:09 I'm loving what I've been seeing from him so far. But for now, I'm Sam. This is Jack. You're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. I'll stay with you. And welcome back to Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium. TFO Partners Field here in Hillsdale, Michigan. We've got Robert Held going back to work in the bottom of the second after a rocky start
Starting point is 00:33:37 And in the bottom of the first giving up three runs On one hit Only one hit Which is kind of Sam, I'd tell you what I think that scoreboard out there is wrong because we at least had one hit before And then No, it was only one hit It was a walk and then an error
Starting point is 00:33:55 Trying to turn two And then another walk Will tickle me pink, Sam I, you're right They had only one hit and they got where he runs out of it. You've got to be happy to get the truck. Yeah, I mean, a couple freebies on base, and then a big bomb to send them home is absolutely
Starting point is 00:34:09 you're going to take the wind out of the sails of these leakie storm, but you got to look for them to try to come back, get out of here quickly. I tell you what, Sam, I gotta love this walk-up music. We had, When I'm Gone by three doors down. Beautiful. That one's
Starting point is 00:34:26 popped up by Guard Swenson. And it's caught for the first out. Stepping him down, Billy Barotsky. The freshman. He's from Cincinnati, I believe. I recall as he steps into the right-handed
Starting point is 00:34:48 batter's box with one out and nobody on. Kick the pitch. That gets in there for strike one. It's moved to O and one, one out. Here in the second inning, Chargers with a three-nothing lead. The pitch. That one missed, a little up and away. And, you know, we've seen help missing outside in that lefty batters box all game.
Starting point is 00:35:12 Are you going to look for him to tighten that up a little bit? Or do you think he's going to keep tempting them? I tell you what, I think he's going for that. That's what he's trying to do. He may bring it in just a little bit until he can kind of get the umpire to bite. Yeah, he's got to try to get some paint. Yeah. Give him some cheese right on the edge that they're going to be tempted with.
Starting point is 00:35:32 As the pitch comes in, swing, and I miss, two balls and two strikes. If you're throwing all for balls, there's really no reason for the players to feel beneath the swing. Of course, you know, this, uh... Yeah. Two and two, the pitch comes in. That's sent out down the right field. Ryan, it's probably going to be playable, not playable. Espozito ran out of real estate a little bit down there on the right field line.
Starting point is 00:36:01 And we're going to see. Perotsky stepped back into the box with the two-two count. Really close there. I mean, I think it just went over the fence. That right fielder had a real shot at getting them. I wonder if he had gotten there quickly if he could have leapt for it.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Made a real highlight play. I tell you what, Sebastian Silva, the catcher for the Lake Erie Storm. His shoes are blinding me all the way up here in the box. Oh, we can see the neon. If it was a little sunnier, I think we'd have to have some shades on. Absolutely, Sam. Absolutely. Good thing.
Starting point is 00:36:32 As that pitch makes it a full count, three and two, with one out, and nobody on here in the bottom of the second. Payoff pitch, swing, and a miss. You know, there's just what we were talking about. I think Helt is kind of coming into his own a little bit, but you've got to wonder if the damage is done. Absolutely, absolutely. The best he can do right now is just try to hold the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Best he can to those three runs he gave up in the first and see if the offense can make up a little bit of the damage that he got himself, a little bit of the trouble he got himself into early on in the game. He's got to start getting a little stingier with those pitches. And I tell you what, he's not going to be in here too long if he keeps getting full counts every other at bat. As that one set off down the first baseline, well, foul, long flare.
Starting point is 00:37:18 That'll give a nice little souvenir from Aaron Jasek, the sophomore, utility player. The 01 pitch. Sent down to the third base side, and he's sprinting down to first, but that's going to be out. And the chargers go one, two, three here in the bottom of the second. It's three-nothing chargers.
Starting point is 00:37:39 I'm Sam Wallace. He's Jack Sullivan. You are listening to Radio Free Hillsdale on a 1.7 FM. Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou, Romeo? Will I ever meet that special someone? Why do my relationships never seem to work out? I need therapy. Is that a tavern?
Starting point is 00:38:03 Looking for relationships? Advinhip advice? Tune in to Wherefore Art Thel Romeo on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. To hear from me, Emily Shody and my father, licensed marriage therapist to Greg Shoddy on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. For almost 10 years, Radio Free Hillsdale has been in the business of conserving classics. I hate when they play rap. I love when they play the hits. I love when conserving the classics plays the deep cuts. CTC needs to cut out the country thing and get back to their roots. Here at conserving the classics, we are in the business of people pleasing.
Starting point is 00:38:40 We only care about one thing, and that's conserving the classics. And so we can serve on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 at that. And welcome back to TFL Partners Field here at Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium. We're through two innings here to the top of the third. Chargers hanging on to a 3-0 lead. Sam Wallace here, my partner, has demonstrated. quite the level of knowledge baseball today
Starting point is 00:39:10 and I'd love to get your thoughts on how the game is shaping up so far two innings in, starting the third. Chargers are looking to hang on to this lead. Well, you know, as they're taking the field again, they're definitely just looking to protect as that's popped up a mile up towards the moon and it's
Starting point is 00:39:26 going to be the second base when he grabs that. I think he misjudged that a little bit. He definitely kind of bent it backwards a little bit. But nonetheless, one pitch, one... Excellent flexibility, excellent athletic. This isn't. Absolutely. That man. This could be a quick first out here in the top of the third inning.
Starting point is 00:39:43 It's three-nothing chargers. Only one hit apiece for these teams as the pitch comes in well outside. It's going to be ball one. Yeah, I think we're looking to preserve a little momentum here. They had a quick one, two, three inning in the bottom of the second, and I think they're looking to do the same to the storm here, the Lake Erie Storm, And get back in the box. You get back swinging.
Starting point is 00:40:08 They're coming back around to the top of the lineup this time. They're definitely looking to start piling on it. Absolutely. I mean, at the end of the day, what's this game about? As that's sent down to second base, gloved easily. Nice grab. And a great grab. Because that was a rocket.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Yeah, definitely had some velo on it. Out on this turf field, those balls skid. Yeah, those balls are definitely a little slippery out there. And that was a great job to just gobble it up and send it on. off to first for an easy second out. Absolutely, Sam. Well set. Here's the pitch.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Ball one. One. Going the opposite way, single, the left field in the first inning. Three nothing charges, go ahead, James. He's been the only success they've had this year really up. The pitch. That's going to get in there right down the middle. A little meatball there.
Starting point is 00:41:01 You don't wonder why I didn't cut at that. Yeah, as I mentioned, I was talking to the pitching coach. I also talked to their hitting coach. He was talking about this guy. As the picks comes in, felled off behind, and it's one and two. Yes. He was talking about this guy, and he was talking about what an asset that he's been to their team all year, and he's really looking forward to him making a statement this year,
Starting point is 00:41:19 looking to be an all-conference player. Absolutely. I mean, he's got a hit on the board today as he takes two balls and two strikes, two outs here in top of the third. You know, he's been their success today, and he's looking to, to stand up. That's going to get through again. Christ being their savior today.
Starting point is 00:41:41 The only two hits they have on the board are two singles that got through. Two for two, Sam, not bad. Not bad, as we said. Two for two is not bad for Jake Christ over there. As we said, they're coach looking for big things for him. Yes, absolutely. I mean, with a name like that, you've got a lot to live up to.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Absolutely. That one was just off the diving glove of our shortstop out there. And all of a sudden, it's two outs. one on first. He's looking a little antsy over there. I think he was thinking about taking second base again. Getting a little greedy. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:42:16 You can see, I mean, his greed just sickens me, frankly. As that one's popped up. Very high, Parowski drifting over. And, ooh, who wants it? But it's made. Catch is made as we get three outs, and we're going to the bottom of the third. Honestly, Sam, I got to say, well done by the right field.
Starting point is 00:42:36 They're calling him off. Agi Hutchinson calling him off, making sure that we had communication out in Schallel right field. Excellent communication in that no man's land. But I'm Sam Wallace. This is Jack Sullivan. This is Chargers baseball. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Welcome to Broadway Spotlight.
Starting point is 00:43:01 I'm Ella Rose Klein, and I'll be taking you through a history of the most iconic Broadway theaters. The Majestic Theater was built in 1927 by architect Brothers Irwin and Henry Chanon. At the time it was built, it was known as one of the largest Broadway theaters, as it seats 1,681 people. The Majestic theaters held some of the most iconic Broadway musicals of all time, including The Wiz, Carousel, South Pacific, Camelot, and The Music Man. However, this theater is primarily known for housing Andrew Lloyd Webbers, the Phantom of the Opera, for a whopping 35 years, being the longest running musical in Broadway history and having a total of 13,981 performances. The Phantom of the Opera was revolutionary to the Broadway world
Starting point is 00:43:45 due to its experimentation, steering away from lighthearted themes, as well as the ability it had to introduce people to Broadway through its beautiful music, storytelling, and its elegant set in costumes. Unfortunately, the show closed April 16th, 2023, due to many factors such as the pandemic and declining tourism. The final performance was invigoration.
Starting point is 00:44:05 only. Though the Broadway production is now closed, the lasting impact of the show carries on. The Phantom of the Opera is touring this year in North America, and the show is running in London's West End and has been for 38 years. Thank you for tuning in to Broadway Spotlight on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM. Tyler Sauer steps into the box to start off the bottom of the third. The first pitch sent up high into center field. Their center fielder barely has to move out there, and he gloves that It's one out, quick first out there. Absolutely. Sam, I tell you what, that had a little left to right tail on it. Yeah, definitely a little wonky spin.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Good job of him to stay on top of that. As Rocco Tanuta, batting second steps up into the box. As I recall, he drew a walk the first time around. Rockotanuta is a sophomore as he takes pitch one for a ball. if we remember grew up in that great aquarium town of Bartlett, Illinois. That's correct, yeah. Last I saw, they had a leafy sea dragon sitting in one of those pens. Wow.
Starting point is 00:45:19 As he takes strike one. You don't see one of those too often. No, no, no, no, no. They're not showing up in your backyard, mostly because there's no water back there. But one ball and one strike as the pitch gets in, that's going to get in there for strike two. That looked like a curve to me, Sam. Yeah, that's some filthy ched on it, for sure, as that was moving definitely a little east to west action. One ball, two strikes, one out.
Starting point is 00:45:44 The set, the pitch, well outside, he keeps missing that left-handed batters box. He keeps pounding that. He's got to bring it in a little bit, don't you think? Absolutely. You know, you've got to pound the zone. When all else is going wrong, you've got to pound the zone to see if you can give your decent defense a chance to mix of play. But with the count at 1-1, as that's sent into right field, that's going to drop. That's going to go down the line.
Starting point is 00:46:08 He's thinking, too, he's going to. The throw, not in time as he slides in safely with a double. Excellent piece of hitting there. He gave us a little discount double check on second base. You got to love that little Aaron Rogers move. We call him Tanuta two bags. He gets in there with the double. Now Zach Kent steps up.
Starting point is 00:46:33 Senior. He had a nice event last time, didn't he? Everybody's favorite player, I think, of the team. My favorite player, personally, just because of that glorious stash. Oh, absolutely. Infield's playing a little back out. You've got to think they're probably worried about that runner going to third. The pitch comes in, he takes a healthy cut.
Starting point is 00:46:54 And that is going to be strike one as he misses that. Ten steps back in. It's from out of Centerville, Ohio. What's down there? Have you ever been there? I've been there one time. What I do remember is they had... The pitch.
Starting point is 00:47:14 I'll tell you what they... They had a barbecue place. It was actually called Sully's. Sully's, no chance. Yeah, they had a really good barbecue sauce. Brisket that just absolutely melts in your mouth. Yeah, just gooey brisket. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:47:28 It was very good. So I had a great time down there. Absolutely. as the pitch comes in, that's going to clip the edge of the zone, and it's one ball and two strikes, with one out and a man on second here in the bottom of the third. Levin, who had a three-run homer earlier in the first inning is waiting on deck, anxiously, hoping he can get some more men on base to do it again. And that's a good stop as that ball hit went down into the dust to set it to two balls and two strikes.
Starting point is 00:47:58 I'll tell you, it's not so much dust as it is mud with this. kind of icky weather we're having. Absolutely, absolutely. You got to just do your best to do what you can out there and let the chips fall where they may. Yeah. As it's two balls and two strikes, swung and sent straight back into the net.
Starting point is 00:48:15 It's going to keep the count at two balls and two strikes, with only one out. Lots of warm weather gear being worn by the two teams. Zach Ken's still rocking with no gloves up there. You're going to wonder if those are starting to sting his hand. Maybe he just has a better feel for the bat. Now the set. And another two, two pitch is coming.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Patrick comes set. The delivery. Good hold. Some turned those shoulders a little bit. But that was an excellent job to keep a really close pitch. And make it a full count. Make this pitcher keep working. As we have a full count with one out, a man on second.
Starting point is 00:48:52 Three balls, two strikes. A pitcher gets the sign. He comes set, the delivery. That's set down into center. field should be an easy play and he caught it to new to two bags stays at second where he is and we've got two outs now will layman the power hitting first baseman the freshman he's going to come up to the plate looking to do some damage again he's one for one on the day sully what do you think we're looking out of him is he swinging for the fences again or is he trying to play a little small ball yeah i'd tell you what
Starting point is 00:49:28 I'd love to see it. I would love to see it. First of all, right now, he's got to deal with the situation at hand. He's got two outs, and he's got a man out there on second base that would love to come home. Yeah, I mean, he's just homesick right now. He'd love to come through as that pitch gets in. No balls in one strike. Yeah, Will's just trying to put something in play hard, hopefully get through the infield
Starting point is 00:49:49 and score that man on second, make it four-nothing chargers. If you look, he's got a big gap between first and second. Those players are really hugging their base. He's coming in to close that gap a little now. I think he realized it. He might have hurt us, actually. But still, I think Will Lehman may try to give it a little apo taco here. A popataco.
Starting point is 00:50:08 I mean, that's what he did last time. Absolutely. As he lays off bowl one, the little cheese at the knees that he laid off. I like that one, Sam. Pitching comes set, the pitch. Oh, a little bit of high ched there. And so we got a hitter's count. We got two and one.
Starting point is 00:50:26 So he's looking for something that he can drive. He's looking to take this at bat on his terms. This is a hitter's count if there ever was one. Absolutely. Two balls in one strike. With two outs on the man on second, Will Lehman, steps up. The kick, the pitch. Swing.
Starting point is 00:50:42 Ooh. Sounds like he got a piece of that. He was going for number two there. He was going for number two. That was a five-nothing swing, if I ever saw one. I think he got a piece of it as, but he sent it back into the catcher's glove as we moved to two balls and two strikes. He is there following a one-out double. Hutchinson warming up in the on-deck circle.
Starting point is 00:51:02 He almost got there to a pitch clock violation as he files that back. Count stays two and two with two outs in the third inning. Two balls, two strikes, two outs. Laman back in the box. Helt gets his sign as Laman settles back into the box. He comes set. Deals, the 2-2 pitch. Taking the look over at second.
Starting point is 00:51:34 The kick, the pitch. Sent out. Drive down. In left field, off the wall. That's going to score a run. He's going to come into second as it's bobbled and left. Two out double for Will. Two out double for Will Lehman.
Starting point is 00:51:49 He's been their entire offense tonight. I tell you what, what an outstanding at bat by this guy. Absolutely. A young kid from Dallas, Texas. Make it an impact today in this game. Chargers up for nothing, thanks to Will Lehman. Four RBIs for the kid. And now there's a man on second with two outs for Augie Hutchinson.
Starting point is 00:52:15 He's going to base on balls his first time up as he's going to take the first pitch. And it's going to be a strike. No balls, one strike, two outs. A game that is freshly made four to nothing. Sam, he's a senior. he's looking to really put his stamp on his Hillsdale legacy right now. Absolutely. Swing and that's sent down to shortstop.
Starting point is 00:52:38 And it's bubbled. His second error of the game and he just stands there and watches it. As Lehman comes into score, it's 5-0. Hutchinson stands safely on first as there's shortstop. Is that Yankovic? He just, it went straight off his glove. I wonder if it took a weird bounce or, you know, The slick field gobbled him up, but he just stood there and watched it.
Starting point is 00:53:04 You know, baseball. You got to think he might have had a chance to grab it again and maybe gun home or at least gobble it up and keep the runner at third. Yeah, you know, it's tough. Baseball out there, it's a lonely game. And baseball, the ball has a way of finding you on your day where you may not be ready for it. And, you know, that's just tough to be out there in that moment, you know. It's a tough position to be in because we know those velocities. We know those moments.
Starting point is 00:53:33 It can be hard. It can be hard to stay on top of your game the whole time. You know, that's why these guys are on these teams. They're trusted to stay on top of it. And just not his day. You've got to be looking for him to bounce back. He'll be coming up here. You got to be, yeah, you've got to be looking for him to try to do some damage in the box next time he comes up to try to make up for those errors.
Starting point is 00:53:58 Absolutely, Sam. The yard, the hitter here. Bill Mallard, the catchers. Two out. Two runs home for Hillsdale. Two outs as he sends over a pickoff attempt to first. I kind of wondered what he's thinking about there. Last time, Augie got doubled up at first on the double play.
Starting point is 00:54:19 But there's two outs here. So he can have as much fun as he'd like and go on contact. Oh, absolutely. Will Mallard, the pride and joy of O'Fallon, Illinois, takes ball one. There's a man on first. Two outs, one ball and no strikes. It's five nothing chargers.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Number three, take it after the babe, right? Oh, absolutely. Yeah, the babe himself. Five-nothing Hillsdale. Five-nothing Hillsdale. As Will Millard and the wild pitch gets behind, that's going to go to the backstop. Hutchinson's going to take second easily.
Starting point is 00:54:55 He practically waltzed in there. It looked like he could have stopped a Taco Bell on the way if he wanted to. He had all. the time in the world. To just to just waltz himself into there into second base.
Starting point is 00:55:16 Chargers are seemingly forcing some mistakes. I mean they're absolutely capitalizing. As the pitch comes in, fouls it off. Back behind the plate and it's two balls in one strike. Jack, talk a little about how, well, when we go to the break, I'll have you talk a little bit about how the
Starting point is 00:55:38 charges are really capitalizing on these mistakes that Lake Erie is creating. And this game is getting away from Lake Erie. As the pitch comes in, that's going to be strike two, two balls, two strikes, two outs, two in already on the inning. And number three, up in the box. A pitcher gets his sign, you got to wonder what's going through his head right now. He's just dying to get that last strike and get out of here. As he comes set, that misses outside ball three.
Starting point is 00:56:10 So with three balls, two strikes, two outs, you're going to be looking for Hutchison to definitely making some runs here, looking to get tired because he's going to be running as soon as the pitcher makes his delivery. It's called strike three. Will was not pleased with that call, and he takes his time getting out of here. He had started running towards first. He dejectedly picks up his bat, and he's going to head back to the dugout. Absolutely a little upset with himself, more upset with the Empire, I'd guess.
Starting point is 00:56:45 Absolutely. You know, you could see the disdain on his face for that call. Yeah. But as you mentioned, Sam, this game has been a story of Hillsdale capitalizing on the mistakes of the storm. And I think, like you said, you know, there's so many different aspects to baseball, so many different aspects of sports in general. One, I would say, especially in team sports, is capitalizing on the mistakes that your opponents made. There's not making your own. There's creating your own energy.
Starting point is 00:57:16 But also, when the other team serves it up on a platter for you, you've got to take it. And Hillsdale's got a great job of doing that today. Absolutely. I mean, it's like you said, they've been slapping it on a plate. putting a candle in it and saying, Happy birthday, Hillsdale, enjoy. Absolutely. And we've just been grabbing those.
Starting point is 00:57:37 I mean, a couple un-earned runs today. At least two, right? Absolutely. And, you know, the Lake Erie College Storm, you know, they're looking for a little help from Heinz as they play catch-up here, heading into the top of the fourth inning. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:57:56 They were very grateful to get out of that last inning. And they're going to take the box here. In the top of the fourth, down by five-hole runs. And, you know, they've dug themselves a hole. It's time to put down the shovel, start filling in, and climb out if they can. Obviously, we see everything through, you know, chargers, colored lenses. But from the storm's perspective, I think it's time. You know, they've got to be coming in here looking to do some damage.
Starting point is 00:58:28 get a little bit of that momentum back you know one run a couple base hits anything the game's still early it's only the fourth inning they've got plenty of time i tell you what sam you know it was getting to a certain point uh when the chargers were up scoring another two runs in the bottom of the third inning as the first the first first pitch first is swung on sent down to shortstop fielded good grab over there at first made that play as i was as i was saying one pitch out when they scored those two innings in the bottom of the third it looked like sloppy baseball from the Lake Erie College Storm. I was waiting, you know, it looked like a circus. I was about to say, throw out a tent and bring out the clowns.
Starting point is 00:59:05 You know, my goodness. Absolutely. Let the fanfare begin. One out, and that's when sent back up the mound. Oh, weird bounce. Off his leg. Was that off his leg or off the mound? It was.
Starting point is 00:59:20 He looks okay. He's on his feet. He's just calling for that ball. He's gesturing towards his foot. looked like it just came off his shoe he seems to be okay the trainers are coming out though they wanted to take a double check just to make sure he seems to be blowing him off a little bit he just wants to get back in there and i tell you what what what a competitor absolutely you know you don't see that in basketball no no we got to the whole world's gonna brawn calls out
Starting point is 00:59:47 for a month when he steps on a lego absolutely my boy daniel higden he came to play ball today and he wanted to get back to work here at the top of the four half yeah he didn't he didn't didn't come to mess around. No. He said, this is a challenge, and I am strong, so I rejoice in it. And he's just going to shake it off. He's taking a couple extra warm-up pitches in front of his training staff just to make sure that he's okay. But he's absolutely fine.
Starting point is 01:00:11 He's telling him, you know, get the heck off my field. I got work to do. Definitely an unfortunate bounce, though, is it's going to put a runner on first with one out. And it's a, that's set out to everybody who donates money. Okay. He's still college. So he can come set. Got inside.
Starting point is 01:00:36 He's taking second. The throw. Wow, what a throw. He babbled it out, out in front of him. And what an incredible job by Millard to step up and shoot it down there precisely on target. Talk about the accuracy. Absolutely. You know, I tell you what, that was incredible throw.
Starting point is 01:00:59 I thought he was taking a little too long to get the ball down there. But he took the time on his throat. As that's flared out towards first, gobbled up easily, and it's going to be a quick, quick inning for the storm, and they're going to head back and take the field. They've got a lot of momentum to defend here to try to get back. Absolutely, Sam. And we'll take a break here.
Starting point is 01:01:19 I'm Jack Sullivan with Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. This is The Making of America. from the Jefferson Media Group. The American Civil War came to an end on April 9, 1865, in a little-known Virginia village called Appomattox. It was there that General Ulysses Grant, commander of the Union armies, accepted the surrender of his counterpart,
Starting point is 01:01:50 Confederate General Robert E. Lee, ending the bloodiest war in American history. Total casualties exceeded 600,000 deaths, over which 320,000, where union soldiers who had given their lives to preserve the union and abolish slavery in America. Never before in world history had a nation gone to war with itself to free slaves within its borders.
Starting point is 01:02:18 This has been the Making of America. I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com. And welcome back to TFO Partnersfield here at Lenda in Glenda Hill Stadium. beautiful Hillsdale, Michigan. Little bit of a foggy day here, Sam, cloudy. Sun's not really peeking through saying hello quite yet. I have a feeling he made him. I'm looking to see his beamish face coming in sometime around the eighth inning,
Starting point is 01:02:47 but I think my hopes are all in vain, quite frankly. Guard Svenson steps back up into the box to kick off this bottom of the fourth. And here we got when I'm gone again, three doors down. You got to look for him to make an impact with that kind of good music days. Maybe we'll take him to karaoke night at P&G. That would be a good one. He'd love that. Well, he's a freshman, so I don't think he could come.
Starting point is 01:03:09 Speaking of which, everybody listening to Hillsdale Radio Free, we'll be at PNG on Wednesday doing karaoke starts at 10. Looking forward to seeing you all there. We're doing a little meet and greet with your announcers tonight. As that one sent off, foul and out of play. Maybe out of play. Did you get it? No catch.
Starting point is 01:03:27 We couldn't quite see from here. He slid behind the dugout. But no catch. Guard Swenson's going to do. going to step back into the box. Trying to make the catch, but it's just a harmless strike. One ball, one strike to Swenson. You got to play that has been made.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Now he's got a new life and how to chance to. You got to think that that definitely changes his approach here maybe or his mindset, knowing that he could have been out, but he didn't quite get it. Is that sent out towards right field, and it's a liner hot shot, but it's gobbled up? And there's one out, and that's going to bring Billy Perotsky up. Good contact, again, just maybe a little bit aggressive with the early in the count. Guard Swenson out of Plymouth, Minnesota. Really nice piece of contact there.
Starting point is 01:04:17 But unfortunately, it's just right towards that right fielder. Billy Perotsky steps up to the bat, the freshman. He goes for a bunt, squeezed. That's a great bunt, great bunt. Wow. That is textbook. I mean, you could not do it any better than that. Wow.
Starting point is 01:04:35 What a situation, too. I mean, that third baseman was playing almost on the outfield grass. I tell you what, he took a shortcut but forgot the map, you know? Almost ran off the bag. Really excellent work there. By Perotsky did not know he had the wheels like that. No. Aaron Jasek, the sophomore, up to bat, now.
Starting point is 01:05:02 Pitch is a little bit outside. design. It's going to be one ball, one strike, with a man on first, and no outs. Horowski, one for two and stolen base attempts this season. Chargers of the team 24 out of 34. The pitch gets in there, gets that top of the zone, a little sauce at the letters. 5-0 Hillsdale, they're definitely keeping the pressure on. With that crafty little bund, with one out and Aaron Jasek. batting last in the lineup the quick pitch quick delivery that's popped up
Starting point is 01:05:42 down the right field line he's going to be oh wow great catch great catch over the shoulder but great awareness by Perotsky to get back there in time he was I don't know if he was trying to steal there or but you know
Starting point is 01:05:57 by the time the ball was at its crest in flight he was halfway to second base so that's a really great awareness by him to hustle back to first base and not doubled up. Absolutely, Sam. I got to say Robert
Starting point is 01:06:09 healthy struggle out here today. He's throwing balls, you know. It's kind of like, you know, he's watering the weeds and wondered why the flower died, you know? It really is. I mean, he's throwing these balls and wondering why he can't, you know, get out of these innings.
Starting point is 01:06:22 As he throws another one, same spot, same, uh, just out, outside the outer third. And he's watering his weeds and wondering why his flowers are dying. He was hitting 360. Here's the pitch. that's going to get in there, a little floater.
Starting point is 01:06:42 Put a little cheese on that meatball and served it up on a platter, but Tyler Sowers didn't take a bite. Yeah, you know, it was a tempting one. Absolutely tempting. With a man on first and two outs, one ball and one strike, and that's going to be up in near the hands for ball two. You know, after that pitch you may, you know, stand an inch or two away from the plate, maybe. Yeah, he's trying to back him off and get a little more real estate on that.
Starting point is 01:07:09 that inner third. You can see Sowers is definitely standing a little closer to the inside of the line and he's going to start the hands. Wow, what a steal. Paratsky gets in there for second. J.S. Sowers held up at first. I'm sorry. Sauer stopped the hand on that pitch to make it two balls and two strikes and Paraski just sprints it in there as the ball came out a little bit in front of the catcher and now he's standing on second. Two balls, two strikes, two outs with a man on second. Two balls, two strikes, two outs. Held kicks and delivers. That's going to be well outside. Three balls and two strikes with two outs. And we're going to be looking for Perotsky to start his jog when that pitcher enters the back half of his warm up. No action in the bullpen
Starting point is 01:08:05 of the Lake Erie College. The payoff pitch to Sowers, way outside, and he's going to take his base on ball four. There's a man on first and second as Tenoota steps up to the plate. Rocco Tenoota, the number two hitter. He's had himself a decent game so far with that double. Yeah, as I understand it, he's been looking into, I don't think he has one yet,
Starting point is 01:08:31 but he's been looking into keeping giant tarantulas as pets. Wow. It helps, they release pheromones that helps with like a mindset thing. Wow, okay, that's cool. You know, some of these guys, you know, as I understand that the dorm mom doesn't particularly like it, so he's holding off until next season. He's only a sophomore, but, you know, he's hoping to get off campus next year so we can start keeping those tarantulas. You know, these guys, you know, go to Hillsdale, you know, they high test scores, of course, to get into Hillsdale, and they are on the cutting edge of how to increase their potential. As athletes.
Starting point is 01:09:06 Absolutely. Is that one sent straight up the middle? That's going to get through right over the base. Tenoota's going to round second. He's going to second. Wow. Way to take an extra base on that. As a run comes into score, it's second and third.
Starting point is 01:09:21 Six to nothing, Hillsdale. Very excellent double. I mean, he sent it up the middle. That's a sure single before for sure. But that center fielder decided to go to third. Jsic was standing on, or Sowers was standing on first. And rounded second as that ball came through, the center fielder decided to try to get him at third, which means Tanuda could take an extra base.
Starting point is 01:09:43 It's now second and third. Absolutely. It's 6-0-0-Hillsdale. As you mentioned, he's known around campus as Tanuda Two Bags. Tenuda Two-Bags, and he's got another one on the day. Zach Kent steps up. Very complacent little strike there. I mean, he saw a little bit of motion in the hands, but nothing too serious.
Starting point is 01:10:05 You got two outs, two men on, second and third. You hate to leave them stranded. Zach Kent's senior. As I understand it, that's, he, uh, Tenoota two bags got some of those spidery ideas from Kent, actually, because he's been known in the past to keep those tarantula pets. Wow. I met one.
Starting point is 01:10:28 It's called, uh, he calls it Dave. Dave. Yeah, Dave, David, it's horrifying little bugger. As he takes. Ball two. Two balls. One strike. Two outs.
Starting point is 01:10:40 Two men on. One run in on the inning. Six to nothing total on five hits and no errors. Helt has got to be struggling right now. This is not but a good start as he sends that pitch. Kent sends a high fly ball down to center. Back to the wall. Caught.
Starting point is 01:11:00 Gone! No, no, it's caught. Never mind. They psyched me out. They psyched me out over in TV. That was about four feet from being gone. Any other part of the park, really. And that's a great at bat, great, great contact.
Starting point is 01:11:23 Hey what, Sam, you chased the light so hard you forgot about the fire. I got flame for it, too. All right, well, thank you, and we'll see you in a minute. I'm Jack. You're listening to Radio Free Hills, Now. 101.7 FM. Our house lineup of the Hillsdale Chargers. It's just not a good recipe.
Starting point is 01:11:42 Absolutely. And I, you know, he's, it's not for lack of trying. You know, he's, he's had a, he's had some sharp looks up there and he's had some sharp at bats, but I don't, I think he's had one strikeout here in four innings. Sixth nothing charges to start the top of the fifth as the pitch gets in there for strike one. location and I got to tell you Higden's location is looking sharp
Starting point is 01:12:13 it's looking clean and crisp as another one gets sent in there but that's going to be ball one about where he wanted it he started the hands but ultimately did not bite as the pitch comes in he's going really quickly through these pitches
Starting point is 01:12:29 pitches here he looks like he's got somewhere to be absolutely absolutely Sam I wonder if he's got a date tonight. The two and one pitch sent in their
Starting point is 01:12:43 little bit outside for ball three. He wouldn't want to leave off man with a six run lead, we said there three balls one strike. Nathan sits, three one pitch. The pitch sent a little flare out to shortstop
Starting point is 01:12:57 got easily Silva down on about six pitches and that's going to bring Jones up to the plate for the Lake Erie College storm. After another quick out to start the inning, I mean, what are they looking here out of the bottom of their lineup?
Starting point is 01:13:13 What are we looking for here? Yeah, I tell you what, they're just looking for something to get going, right? They're down 6-0. They need just a little spark, you know, how do you eat an elephant right, one bite at a time? They're trying to get a man on base. They don't need a home run right now.
Starting point is 01:13:29 You can probably get a couple bites, though. Hey, I'll do what I can. Pfeier may be telling him, son, you can't use that bad. Oh, looks like there's some issues with Jones's bat. I wonder what the problem is. A little too much pine tar. And they're going to consult.
Starting point is 01:13:45 I think the Hillsdale College coach had a bit of an issue with that bat. And they're going to take a look at it now. You know, we can't hear him. I don't know if you lip-rate at all. Yeah, I tell you what, Sam, we're going to send it down to our rules analyst, Jim Stalts, on the left field line. He's going to tell us what's going on. Take it away, Jim. Thanks, Jack.
Starting point is 01:14:06 I just got work from the upfire that they're having a little difficulty with the bat because it has some damage on it and you're not allowed to do that in NCAA baseball we'll send it back to you in the studio. Thanks Jim so much for that help. Thanks Jim that was really enlightening. With a fresh bat he takes ball one. We had our George Brett Belly Martin moment there. That was Jones.
Starting point is 01:14:32 And if you're under 30 Googling kids. with one ball and one strike and that one's going to get in there for ball two. One out here in the top of the fifth, it's six nothing Hillsdale. Two balls and no strikes to Jones. Alex Jobs. As he take ball three. And you gotta wonder if we're having a little command issues
Starting point is 01:14:58 out of Hinton here. He hasn't had many of bats like this. That one's gonna get in there for strike one, though, It's three balls. One strike, one out. Chargers have scored in three out of the third, one of the fourth. A lead six nothing at C. Chargers have scored in three out of the four frames so far.
Starting point is 01:15:15 And as that one sent out to right field, that's going to be a base hit. Tidy little single out to right field for Jones, a little opposite field action. And he's got to feel pretty good about himself standing there on first base. With only one out, maybe, you know, he's thinking that's a momentum. shift for his team. Absolutely. You know, like it's those little wins that you got to build up right now. You've got to change the momentum in the dugout. One run, two runs. Is that really going to make that big of a difference in a six-run game? No, it's not, but it may get the dugout starting to believe
Starting point is 01:15:50 that this isn't a lost cause. Absolutely. And, you know, especially the lineups turning over now as we hit the top of the order with Yankevich. He starts the hands. Jones goes to second. He gets in there safely pretty easily actually did not know he had the wheels on that wagon that was a nice slide i tell you what really crisp i was looking a little tray turnery yeah absolutely for those of you listening to us we hope you check out
Starting point is 01:16:17 some tray turner highlights they're pretty awesome he's got a great slide best in the MLB as the pitch comes set a little bit outside it's going to be two balls and one strike with men now on second only one out for Yankovitch
Starting point is 01:16:33 Now this is possibly the best opportunity Lake Uries have all game. With Travis Yankovitch, their leadoff hitter, with a man in the box with a man on second and only one out. Could be their best opportunity all game, Jack. What do you think? Absolutely. You know, you got a man on second, only one out, as you said. They're looking for a chance to put up a cricket number in the top of this fifth.
Starting point is 01:17:01 Get lessen that deficit. Maybe instead of six runs down to four or three. And that way... Literally, oh, but that's in there for strike three. That is deflating. Absolutely. Two outs. Man, still on second.
Starting point is 01:17:14 Still towards the top of the order as Geis steps up to that. But, Jack, like you were saying, you know, it's... You've got to look for those opportunities, and they have not had a lot of opportunities, and they're going to have to start capitalizing on them. as best they can. As now Geissy steps up into that lefty batter box with two outs and a man on second.
Starting point is 01:17:41 Hopefully just trying to drive in one. Just put something across to help his teammates out. That one's outside for ball two. Two malls and no strikes. Two outs. Six nothing Hillsdale College. As the pickoff attempt and he's really comfortable. As the pickoff attempt and he's
Starting point is 01:18:02 caught between second and third. Jones and a pickle. Out, out, out going to third. Wow, what a, what a play. Geissy will lead us off to start the sixth. But that was incredible look. Thereby, Helt. Halt has got to be feeling good about himself.
Starting point is 01:18:21 I'm sorry, by Higden. Absolutely, yeah, Higden is really just a stud out there today, especially with that pickoff, that runner, taking an extra lead, you know, grabbed for the crown, didn't realize it came with thought, Lawrence. Yeah. He went for it.
Starting point is 01:18:40 But unfortunately, he's caught between second and third. And I tell you what, we were just talking about momentum and how crucial momentum is to this game. And wow, what a momentum changer. I mean, they've got to be feeling deflated. Because you know what? It's cool to get third. But at the end of the day, this game's about who gets more runs. that's really what what defines the game
Starting point is 01:19:03 and if you got three outs you can't get any runs you know what I mean yeah absolutely sorry health at 85 so they're probably health at 85 pitches we just heard um we're seeing plenty of activity down in the lake erie college dugout but meanwhile health steps up to do another ending of work that's the man he had his 8th birthday just a few days ago
Starting point is 01:19:30 right? Yeah. Hillsdale College looking to keep piling on here in the bottom of the fifth. Really nice party down. As we see Will Lehman step up to the plate. He's had a good game so far, huh? Yeah, what is it, a double and a homer?
Starting point is 01:19:48 Am I right? I believe he's two for two. Wow. Bottom of fifth. Looking to do some more damage today. The game's not done. I mean, third at bat, to lead off the fifth inning. It's a story of the game, really.
Starting point is 01:20:00 Absolutely. You know, this is the first time he stepped up without runners on base, though. So he's had four of the Chargers six runs. Layman really set the tone for the game with a three-run home. He definitely set the tone. We see his number is 33. He had a three-run shot in the first inning. As that comes in, strike one, that's one ball, one strike, no outs to Will Lehman.
Starting point is 01:20:33 The quick pitch, just a nine-second turnaround between pitches. Swing and a miss, though, one ball and two-strike. We're seeing help pick up the pace of game a little bit. I wonder if he knows his time might be running out, so he was trying to rush the pace of play. You see him start. We see that pitch clock out in center starts at about 20 seconds as soon as he gets the ball back.
Starting point is 01:20:55 He's pitching by about 13. He's starting his wind up. He's definitely trying to quick pitch him. Look, he gets the ball back, and he goes straight back to the runner. Straight into it. Yeah. Yeah. No, this is definitely a strategy. Yeah. He's trying to mix something up as that's popped up,
Starting point is 01:21:09 a moose shot down towards the third base side, and it's gobbled up by the shortstop one way. Yeah, Sam, I definitely think this is interesting. He's trying to change something up, trying to get something to go his way. He's looking to quick pitch the chargers here, as we have Augie Hutchins come to the plate. I think, you know, I mean, look, he's already on the rubber. He's going to launch into his windup right away.
Starting point is 01:21:32 Yeah, he's on the rubber. Hutchinson has barely stepped into the box by the time Helt is delivering. And that is a ball. Ball one. I thought that might have put in there. I'll be honest, Sam. There are a lot worse pitches that I thought were called, you know, that were called strikes.
Starting point is 01:21:48 That should have been balls. Hey, what's our umpire's name tonight? Because he calls another ball, but that one was a pretty easy call. Toggy Hutchinson, who's in there, two balls and no strikes with only one out. Our home plate umpire is Steve Kuroski. we might have to have some words with him after this game he can't he can't eject us from the game no he can't he can't although Steve Detroit native
Starting point is 01:22:12 yeah wonderful guy wonderful guy Detroit what a great town absolutely great town those gritty tigs the motorist comes in there for strike one it's three balls and one strike with only one out Augie Hutchinson in the driver's seat with Three balls and one strike, the pitch. He's going to take that for ball four. I don't think he realized it.
Starting point is 01:22:38 He kind of stepped out like he was ready to get back in and take another cut on a full count. Yeah, you know, he didn't sell that one well at all. But nonetheless, man on the first one out. Yeah, Will Millard, who's got a double on the day. You can see him kind of got him out and got us that a little bit. He's not happy with himself right now. Yeah. Health is definitely not pleased with itself.
Starting point is 01:23:03 His body language is telling us all we need to know is he takes to look down over to first. The pitch. Strike one. Must have clipped the inside. I wouldn't have known, but apparently clip the inside part of the zone. No, and I wouldn't have swung at that. He did a good job holding off. It's not his pitch, even though it's called to strike.
Starting point is 01:23:24 It's not his pitch. You know, he's an outside zone guy. He's an up and away guy, as I know. Is that one up and away is sent off foul. Great cut. He's looking down at his shoes. Maybe that's the problem. I wonder if he's having a little gear issue, perhaps.
Starting point is 01:23:43 But no matter, with one out, he steps into an 0-and-two count with a man on first. Umpire calls time. Resetting the pitch clock. So help gets an extra second to kind of gather himself. What kind of pitch are we looking for here? You know, we're looking for something to drive, right? It's 0 and 2. You've got to shorten up a little bit, but you're still looking to put something in plate hard.
Starting point is 01:24:10 Absolutely. But you're looking for anything in that zone, maybe choke up an inch on the bat, step in, get a little closer to the plate, and you're just looking for control. Just looking to put some barrel on the ball. Absolutely. As that pitch was well outside, a little backfoot slider, they got away. One ball and two strikes as it's sent over the first for a pickoff attempt, easily back in. is Lehman.
Starting point is 01:24:36 Layman's taking a healthy lead. You know, he's known as the speedster on this team. Will Mallard the catcher, much less so. Pitch. Oh, a little bit high, two balls and two strikes. You know, I've heard some of the players call Will Mollard, who's up right now. I've heard they call him the big fudge every now and then because of his stocky portfolio.
Starting point is 01:25:04 I've heard that around campus as well, say. Yeah. And Will Mallard puts one into play. Rightfielders sprinting for it. He misses it, but it's foul ball anyway. Crashing into the fence on that slide. He's been getting a workout over there, huh? You've seen a lot of fliers sent out that way.
Starting point is 01:25:24 He's taking his time walking around. He might get a trainer out there in a minute. They're definitely taking a look, but I think he's okay. He carried a lot of momentum into that fence. Yeah, it's almost Bryce Harper-esque. That fence comes up on the outfielder really. And you can see, I mean, we can see from here that that fence comes tailing in. It starts, you've got probably, what, 60 feet clearance between the dugouts and the line.
Starting point is 01:25:51 But as you get out towards the right field foul pole, you're looking at like maybe 10 feet. Yes. in those areas. I mean, it really comes up as that pitch is taking. Really nice take. Will Mallard started the hands. And that makes it a full count. Three malls, two strikes.
Starting point is 01:26:14 There comes the payoff pitch up coming to Will Mallard. There comes the payoff pitch to Will Mallard. The big fudge, of course. And he takes that. He knew it. Nice little bat flip. You don't wonder if that looked a little vindictive, Because if you remember his last at bat, he seemed a little bit upset with the umpire for a call that he made.
Starting point is 01:26:36 The ball caught the bottom corner of the zone. And he was a little upset. He took his time getting out of the box, kind of looked over at the ump. That's right, Sam. And here we got Lake Erie College coach coming out. We've got pitching change here at TFL partners field, Lenda and Glenda Hills Stadium. I'm Jack. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 1-1-1.
Starting point is 01:26:57 1.7 FM. Don't go anywhere. And welcome back to Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium. TFO Partners Field. We've got a pitching change here for you, folks. As the Chargers are working right now in the bottom of the 5th, they've got a 6-0 lead, and we've got one out in the inning. Sam, give me your thoughts on what's transpired as of late. I mean, we're just seeing really just a deflation of this leak, eerie team.
Starting point is 01:27:24 I mean, it feels like every time they've got a little bit of hope. You know, something happens. I mean, they've definitely tidied up the errors, which is good. I like to see that. They're playing hard out in the field. It's just Hillsdale is taking advantage of the smallest things. You know, we saw them close out the top of the fifth inning by getting their runner in a pickle and, you know, caught out between second and third. We've seen really close counts go all Hillsdale's way.
Starting point is 01:27:55 We've seen, again, they've cleaned up the errors. but we've seen a couple things just, you know, the guy can't quite get there in time to make the grab. But it's definitely feels like all those coin flips are coming Hillsdale's way. Absolutely, Sam. And you said it perfectly, right? So this game, every game is left up to a little bit of chance, but it seems like everything that could go Hillstills way or close to it has done that. Absolutely, yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:22 As we stand here with one out and two on. Hillsdale College. Take the mound is Nicholas Candle. He's the left-handed pitcher for Lake Erie. Also plays a little outfield, as I understand. I think he dabbles. Looking at his bio here,
Starting point is 01:28:45 he's also an avid dinosaur fan. Wow. Yeah. Spinosaurus, I think, is his favorite as he sends in a pitch. Sam, what's your favorite dinosaur? You know, there's this really cool one I was researching the other day called, it's like Baja Soros. It's found in the Baja Peninsula.
Starting point is 01:29:07 It's got spikes that grow out of its spinal column as it goes to one ball and one strike. Spikes that grow out of its spinal column. So it's got these huge like spines coming out of its back that's just all. I see. Okay. Really cool. Now, our friend here on the mound, Nicola. Candle, he's a Spinosaurus guy, as I understand it.
Starting point is 01:29:30 And as he throws a second strike in there, it's one ball and one strike. And as I understand it, he was not a fan of Spinosaurus's representation in that third Jurassic Park movie. Okay, yes. He said Spinosaurus has feathers. Oh, really? Which I wasn't aware of. I wasn't aware of that game in Spinosaurus, but he's, you know, he's almost an expert if he, you know, if he's speaking. You got to respect that sort of passion, you know.
Starting point is 01:29:59 Oh, I love it. Just in it for the hype. Oh, my gosh, it's in the third Jurassic Park. No, he... As the pitch comes, and it's sent off foul ball, two balls and two strikes. He's a real subject matter expert, and he knows what a spinosaurus is like, and he's saying, stop, stop. This is not representing what really the Spinosaurus is. I mean, I mean, he spent the last couple of years doing deep research, and he's constructed in his mind this image of what Spinosaurus is, I think, and to see.
Starting point is 01:30:26 and to see it in that movie was a little disheartening, which I think he's got some vindiction coming out today, as that ball is well outside. Squirts in front of the catcher, did a good job keeping it in front, and it's a full count. Three balls, two strikes, one out, with a man on first, and a man on second, and a man in the left-handed batter's box here. Four Hillsdale College, Guard Swenson, our boy out of Minnesota,
Starting point is 01:30:54 and that's a walk. Three straight walks is going to load the bases for Billy Paraski, the freshman. And Sam, we've still just got one out in this bottom of the fifth inning. This is really, really getting out of hand. This is getting out of hand. Yeah. Yeah, Candle definitely came in here trying to make a difference. Pick up for health and it's not going his way.
Starting point is 01:31:18 He fires that one in for strike one, though. Barowski single, still second and scored. bases are juiced full of chargers. Bit of a crowded infield right now is that one is a swing and a miss. Billy wanted to make the difference in that game with that swing. And that makes it zero balls and two strikes. Only one out, though. He's definitely looking to elevate here.
Starting point is 01:31:42 Send something in the outfield, maybe even just get a sacrifice fly. Just send a run in. As that one is taken, the ball gets in front of the catcher, but he does a good job to keep it in play. Yeah, very well. on there, especially when you've got a lot of backstop, or a lot of room behind the back there's a whole lot of real estate
Starting point is 01:31:59 coming to the backstop. He's got to do what he can to keep that ball in front of him, keep that and that's a good job. It's those little things that you need to do. The pitch, swing and a mess. Strike three. Candle's settling in now as he strikes out, Billy Paratsky, to make it two outs.
Starting point is 01:32:15 Base is still full. Next up's going to be number nine. Aaron Jasek. He's the sophomore. Fresh out of Parchment, Michigan. Lovely little town. They have a great tulip field. Oh, yeah?
Starting point is 01:32:36 Yeah, it's like famous within a hundred mile radius. Wow. I could be wrong about that. I might be thinking of something else, but never been. Aaron Jasek, one ball and no strikes. That's going to be.
Starting point is 01:32:52 ball too as the ball gets away in front of the catcher again you know that was that was not in the dirt or anything i wonder if this catcher's just having a hard time he's doing a good job of keeping in front of him yeah i hear you're saying sam but i wonder if he's having a hard time picking up on some of that spin some of that location sam you know i'd love to get your thoughts as the pitch comes that's going to be strike one two balls one strike briefly briefly here i'd love to get your thoughts on the renovations that were done a year or two ago here at linda and glendale's stadium Yeah, I mean, you know, I was living in the building next door at the time, so I had to listen to all that, so I don't think too kindly. That ball three has taken.
Starting point is 01:33:31 Three balls and one strike. He can't throw another ball. He doesn't have an empty bag for him. No, he doesn't. But I've heard great things. I know the players love this field. You know, they love the color. They love that turf.
Starting point is 01:33:43 The pitch. Walked him. And that's going to be a free run. That is a handout. Is it four walks? That is four consecutive. walks. Bases are still full. Bases still full as Hutchison comes in to score on a walk,
Starting point is 01:34:02 bases loaded walk, not feeling good for candle. And that's going to turn over the order. Tyler Sowers comes in with the bases loaded, and he takes a healthy cut at that, and that's that way off foul. No balls in one strike. If you're just joining us, the score is not. now seven to nothing. He'll still after a bases loaded walk. We're here in the bottom of the fifth inning. It's no balls,
Starting point is 01:34:28 one strike, and two outs to Tyler Sowers. The pitch, well outside, ball two. He's got a lot of tail on that left hand two-seam fastball, but yet it's still missing quite wide. Yeah, I mean the motion is great. I think it's his location that's a little off as he kicks in pitches.
Starting point is 01:34:47 That one sent out down the left field line and that's going to go well foul. Had the distance, he just has to straighten it out. Sowers is hungry now. And we got one and two. Chargers would like to see him straighten that one out. One ball. One ball, two strikes, two outs to Tyler Sallers with ducks on the pond as he pit swings.
Starting point is 01:35:13 Groundball down to shortstop. He's going to take the easy one at second, and we are through five here at Hillsdale College. It's 7-0-churchers. Three men left on base for the chargers. You got to think that's a little disheartening. You know, you look at the scoreboard and it's 7-0, but to leave three ducks on the pond.
Starting point is 01:35:34 It's always going to hurt no matter of the situation. Yeah, it's going to sting a little bit. You know? I mean, you know, again, you're up by so much. Absolutely. But it's still going to sting. Daniel Higden's going to take over here still. Still hurling here at the top of the sixth inning.
Starting point is 01:35:55 He's been having a wonderful game. He's through five with no runs, four hits, no errors for the Chargers. Daniel Higden, having a great game. What do you think this is going to do for the stats? You know, really solid, right? You're always looking at the lower that ERA, and he's got, what, he's through five innings, a scoreless ball.
Starting point is 01:36:19 Scoreless ball. I mean, his walks and hits per inning pitch is sub one. down two. I mean, just a really solid gem of a start from Higden. You know, even if he weren't to start this sixth inning, it's still a wonderful outing from him. It's what we've come to expect from him. Exactly. I mean, with those spiders that he keeps, it's just those pheromones are really something. As we see a nice big heron flying over the field, gorgeous little bird there. And my good, guys, the elite.
Starting point is 01:36:52 I've heard he's trying to switch to mantis shrimp, actually. Oh, really? Yeah, there's something about, it's the way they emit more, they see more colors than we can, and there's something about, as the first pitch is a ball inside. It's something about those ultraviolet rays that they reflect. Wow. Yeah, and also, I think he's seeing it as sort of a,
Starting point is 01:37:17 as that second pitch is sent back up the middle, doubled up by the sophomore. Wow. Second baseman gobbled up in first base. Great play all around. Wonderful show of athleticism there. Folks, we had a ground ball. Second baseman traveling to his right, made a backhand play,
Starting point is 01:37:35 and then threw it over to first on the hop. Great pick by first baseman, and we've got one out in the inning. But as I was saying, I think he keeps those shrimp as almost sort of like a sensei thing, because they're known for having that really quick punch. It can break glass and stuff. And it's those quick reflexes that he resonates with. And as a pitcher, you know, you need that speed. As that ball's sent well out to center field,
Starting point is 01:38:05 but it's tracked down and caught fairly easily out in center field. It's two down. You know, here at Lenda Hill Stadium, TFO Partners Field, we can see that we've got short left-and-right foul poles, only 3.30, but deep in center, it's... It's 390. I mean, that's a steep incline. That's a manly hit. I don't do my... Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, that had some hair on it, and we'd love to see it.
Starting point is 01:38:32 And that was probably a good 360. Out of our man down there. The pitch. 1-0 gets away from the catcher, but there's nobody on, so it's of no concern. This is Solac up to hit with two balls, no strikes. He doesn't bite there. And that's going to be 3-0. So you know, if you're, if you're, if you're, if you're Higden here on the mound here,
Starting point is 01:39:09 what's a walk going to do to your confidence? You know, I tell you what, you're up 7-0, right? Even if you walk the guy, it's not really going to have a big effect on the game. But as a pitcher, you come, you want to do. your best, you pride yourself on your craft. Well, Solac does take ball four. Yeah, and I know being the competitor that
Starting point is 01:39:29 he is, he's going to be frustrated with that knowing that it's probably not going to have an impact on the game, he's going to be frustrated with that being the perfectionist that I know he is. Absolutely. I mean, he's going to have some words with his strength later. Absolutely. Yeah, and they may go back to the drawing board
Starting point is 01:39:45 get a better game plan for next time. They might. They really might. And, uh, but, All he can do is move on. You know, it's maybe a bit of that stat line. I don't think he's thinking about it at all, personally. Okay.
Starting point is 01:40:00 I think he doesn't care. He knows his lead. He knows as long as he doesn't give up any runs, he's the golden boy. He's getting that game ball. And, you know, that's the real prize of that game ball. Everybody wants it. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 01:40:13 We have Esposito here in the box with one ball and one strike. Two outs and a man on first, swing, and a miss. That's two strikes. His stuff has the number of different pitches he has in the way he can execute them. His stuff has looked really sharp, so I'll have you talk about that in a minute. As the pitch. In the dirt. Runner for second.
Starting point is 01:40:36 See you. See ya. Not even close. What a throw by Will Mallard. That's his second one of the day, as I recall. Excellent, excellent job by Willard. I'll echo you there earlier in the game, Sam. He got so focused on the Chief.
Starting point is 01:40:51 He's not easy, forgot about the trap. Again, yeah. I mean, there's traps all around. These guys are like mice. I love that cheese, spinach, so we're through five and a half here in Hillsdale College, Linda and Glenda Hill Stadium.
Starting point is 01:41:09 The Chargers are up seven to nothing. Seven to nothing on only five hits, with no errors committed. Lake Erie College Storm. No runs on four hits, with two errors, committed. Solly, we've talked a little bit about those errors.
Starting point is 01:41:24 They came to bite them a lot early on in that game. I think they're short. I believe they're shortstop. He had a couple, a couple interesting ones. Yankovich had a couple ones that definitely kind of resonated and had more long-term effects, you know, sort of a butterfly effect. Oh, you bobble a ball there in shortstop, no big deal. But all of a sudden, it's 7-0.
Starting point is 01:41:48 You've got to wonder how much of that he blames himself for. gosh, I feel like Travis Scott up here talking about the butterfly effect, right? And, yeah, you're exactly right. Yankovitch made a couple of mistakes, and you can't blame him too heavily for everything that's transpired in this whole game, right? But you do look back and go, what are the things that initially went wrong for the storm? Is that shortstop? I think, yeah, I think he set the tone. Now I'm not going to grill him too much, but.
Starting point is 01:42:18 But, yeah, I mean, it's, it's, he definitely is a representative slice of this storm team. But here we are back for the bottom of the sixth inning. Rocco to Nuta, Tenoota two bags, stepping back up to the plate. He's got a couple of doubles today, huh? Yeah, and I tell you what, he's doing his namesake proud. Yeah, I mean, he just, he saw it. A couple donkeys straight in the gap and slid his way into second base. You know, they call him Tenoota two bags for a reason.
Starting point is 01:42:57 And he's shown us today. Definitely a stockier fellow standing there in the right-handed batter's box. 5-10-180. The 1-0 pitch comes in and it's to rike one. Rock and Tunauda, the pride and joy of Bartlett, Illinois. And Lehman, the Fowl, 2, 3, and 4. He's an infielder for the Chargers as he takes ball two. Two balls, one strike.
Starting point is 01:43:26 Nobody out. Here in the bottom of the sixth inning, it is 7-0. Hillsdale Chargers. The kick, the pitch, Candle. That is lifting. Taduida sends one to the moon. Rightfieler Esposito tracks it down, makes the routine play, and gets on out of there.
Starting point is 01:43:46 Rocco Tenoota down. and Zach Kent, our favorite senior, our favorite moustachioed senior. Sally, can you talk to me a little bit about just how much you'd love to have that stash? You know, as much as I hate to admit it, I can't grow a mustache at least like that. You know, he's got the full Freddie Mercury going on.
Starting point is 01:44:08 It's gorgeous. It's really something. I almost want to go meet him after the game and see it. Absolutely, in person. In person, yeah, yeah. Maybe we'll take him to P&G, see a little beer mustache, too. Who knows? Maybe he might round out that whole Freddie Mercury and really belt it out. Yeah, we'd love to see a good belt from him here.
Starting point is 01:44:29 As it's 7-0, with one ball and one strike as he taps one, that's going to go foul for strike two. Tap-tap-tap-a-roo. One ball, two strikes, one out to Zach Kent. Mr. Mustache, they call him. If anybody listening wondering what the reference was from, it's from Happy Gilmore, the legendary movie with Adam Sandler. Of course. Sam, do you like Adam Sandler? I love Adam Sandler, honestly.
Starting point is 01:44:57 The pitch, that's tapped down opposite field. Third baseman is there to get it. Close play. I'm fired to think about that for a second. I don't know if we get a challenge. We may have to go to the Chase replay cam here. Yeah, we're going to have to go to the Arby's instant replay here. Here's Will Laman.
Starting point is 01:45:16 But they're not going to take a look about it. That was a very close play. I didn't think, based on the speed of that grounder that it was going to be... We may have to go to our colleagues. That it was going to be anywhere close to that. We may have to go to our colleagues in New York. As Will Laman steps in. Will Laman's had a good day.
Starting point is 01:45:31 He's got a couple of base knocks and a three-run Homer to start off the scoring in the first inning. Four RBIs for him today with nobody on base, and he takes ball one. It's one ball and one stretch. with two outs here in the bottom of the sixth inning. The kick, the pitch. Layman sends it straight back. Candle, hey, let's talk about Candle real quick. He looked a little shaky.
Starting point is 01:45:59 He gave up that base's loaded walk back in the fifth inning. And, you know, it looked like he's locked in a lot more. He's gone two up, two down, with two strikes to Lehman, who takes ball two. he's looking a lot more solid absolutely I completely agree it's good to see him
Starting point is 01:46:22 shake and you know you know walking a little bit as he kicks and pitches fouled off back by Will Lehman you know as good as it is to see Candle walk in it's better to see Will Laman
Starting point is 01:46:40 walk in you know we love this kid here he bats clean up for a reason here's the kick the pitch sense oh nice play in the dugout or he bobbled that he
Starting point is 01:46:53 caught someone in the dugout I was worried worried for yeah back that layman on the handle and Will's shaking the hands a little bit the bees are buzzing yeah will layman definitely caught that a little bit
Starting point is 01:47:05 on the handle looks like his bees are buzzing a little bit definitely feeling a little bit of a tingle in those fingies two balls two strikes two strikes two outs. Seven to nothing. The kick pitch from Candle sent down that same way again. This is shaping to be a really long at bat. This is a great battle by both Lehman and Candle. Absolutely. We've got full count, or no, excuse me, excuse me, we've got two, two, two balls, two strikes, two outs.
Starting point is 01:47:32 And a couple of four balls already, Sam. It's been a long at bat. I believe this is the ninth pitch. Wow. That's ball three. Incredible take by Lehman. What an eye on this kid. That was inside a little. little bit. I thought it may have caught a little bit of play. Evidently not. Shout out to his optometrist because his eyes are just magnificent. I don't know if you saw how good, how close that was. The payoff pitch, swing and I miss, though. Oh, what a disappointing end to that. We'll be back for the top of the seventh inning. I'm Sam. I'm Sam. He's Jack.
Starting point is 01:48:07 You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. listening to Soundtracks for the Skyline, a genre of music for each city. Athens is anything but a sleepy college town with its evolving genres, hip venues, and well-regarded music school. I'm Lillifay Kramer, and this has been
Starting point is 01:49:24 soundtracks for the skyline on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Leave things off for Lake Erie on the top of the 7. Welcome back to Charger Baseball. Welcome back to Charger Baseball.
Starting point is 01:49:46 This is Sam and Jack. Higden is out for another inning of work. Six. Scorless inning so far. Really nice to see as that's a base hit by Esposito. Sent out into right field. A lead off single on the 0-1 count. The storm have a man on with no outs.
Starting point is 01:50:05 I mean, this is as good a position as any as they've had all game, quite frankly. Absolutely. Sam, I just want to give a shout out. This half inning is brought to you by little. By hungry how he's pizza. The runner goes to second. He gets in there safe. Sam, I don't know about that call.
Starting point is 01:50:25 I don't know about that call. I mean, you know, Will Millard has been on his game all day. He's gotten a couple guys that go in the second. I don't know why they keep trying. I was shocked to see him go. I mean, Will's just been gunning him down. He's a sniper back there. And, you know, Esposito got in there.
Starting point is 01:50:45 Just this once, I guess. Millard said you can have that one. You know, a little tip of the caps and yeah, have it. You know, because the score is, I mean, the score is so outrageous right now. 7-0 Hillsdale lead. Here's the pitch. Sent off foul. Well back behind the plate. Both bullpens.
Starting point is 01:51:06 Look in a little quiet, not seeing a whole lot of motion down there. The Chargers is definitely happy, absolutely happy with Higden's game so far. Candle settling in nicely as they put up. Oh, the ball gets behind. Millard with an athletic play there, but regardless, Esposito gets down to third. Now the storm with a runner on third. Chargers absolutely loving Higden's work today. Candle for the storm put up their, just their second scoreless frame all game.
Starting point is 01:51:41 Chargers have scored in six or four out of their six frames. as Higden sends ball four down and now there's runners on the corners with nobody out and this is as good of a position as they've been in all game. Absolutely, Sam, I completely agree. They're looking to put something on the board here. I don't think we're quite at the point in the game where they're merely playing for pride.
Starting point is 01:52:07 It's not that out of reach. Absolutely not. But I think they're really, if they want to get something going and try to give charges run for their money. They got it to do it now. Yeah, I mean, they're out of time. With only three frames left, it's time.
Starting point is 01:52:22 And Chargers are going to take a little mound visit here. This is their first one, well, their second one, because Higden took a ball off his foot, if you remember back in the second inning. Yeah, umpire's going to come out and say, this has been going on a little too long. Time to move on with this game with our lives, you know. Yeah, we're looking for the storm to maybe get crafty here.
Starting point is 01:52:48 We saw a really great bunt earlier, I believe was from Pirozki on the Chargers Club. Are we looking for something tricky? Are we looking for the big blast? If you'll play back, they'll concede the run here. You got to wonder if Espinoza here is looking for the big blast or to play a little small ball and get in there. All right, we're ready to go. The pitch up and in towards the face. Nerve to steal this kid.
Starting point is 01:53:25 Higden working on a nice lead seven to nothing, but he's got two on and nobody out. The pitch, ball two inside. It's two balls, no strikes. Nobody out. With men on the corners for the Lake Erie College storm. Higden cut. I'm set, the pitch, swing and a miss. Wow, he really fooled him there, two balls and one strike.
Starting point is 01:53:49 That pitch had seen the tail away from the right-hand here. That pitch is definitely coming a little farther out away from him. If you notice that, the pitch. That one's put into play. Run's going to come into score. They don't get two, but they get the man at first. And the storm scratch across their first run of the game on a sacrifice, ground out to first. Sam, that's not nothing. That's not nothing.
Starting point is 01:54:15 No, I mean, I mean, that is, you got to, I could feel their spirits lifted from here. Absolutely. You can see a little bit of celebration in the dugout. There are high fives all around. High five, because you know what? This isn't a bad situation either. Man on second, only one out. Part of the lineup is that one sent a mile, but far foul. And that one's going to land in the drainage ditch over there. I tell you what, Sam, if they can put up two or three runs this inning, get themselves a little momentum moving. in the right direction, it's not over. They're trying to get back in the
Starting point is 01:54:47 game, right? Like you said, they're not just playing for pride. They know they can still win this. If we can put up a couple in every inning, so can they. And that's what they're looking to do. They're looking to capitalize here with only one out and a man in scoring position with one ball and one strike.
Starting point is 01:55:05 The pitch? Wow, grabbed the corner. I didn't think so. Neither did Silva. But the umpire. standing his ground there and it's one ball and two strikes.
Starting point is 01:55:19 That pitch looked a little outside to me and the umpire agrees, counts even at two and two. You know, I heard the Chargers give the umpires two free drink coupons at Pub and Grubin. Do they really? I might have to be an umpire. Two balls and two strikes to Higden
Starting point is 01:55:37 misses again, full count with one out and a man on second. That looked good, but maybe just outside. Yeah, definitely got a little bit outside. The payoff pitch, three and two, one out, with a man on second. Here it comes. That's sent it
Starting point is 01:55:53 to play, gobbled up. And they got him at second. They caught him. They got the lead runner. Wow, the awareness. It's so easy to just go to first and let that runner get to third. That was Espinoza standing on second, I believe. And Sam, that's deflating.
Starting point is 01:56:12 That is deflating. When you're just starting to get things going, and then Hillsdale makes a great play to really cut off your momentum that you were just starting to build. You know, Hillsdale, gosh, the charges are doing such a good job of keeping the storm, the proverbial storm at bay. Yeah, I tell you what, that's just a high IQ play. I mean, this guy's like Einstein and Cleats over there at second base to go for that lead runner because they caught him off the back. Absolutely. And here we have Higden going back to work here. We've got one ball in those strikes, two outs, man on first.
Starting point is 01:56:53 That's a nice pitch. It was a little low, it seems. Higden struggling here on the top of the seventh inning after a masterful first six innings, shut out six innings. And there's a strike. It looks like the same pitch to me, Sam. I don't know what's, I don't know. Yeah, they were two.
Starting point is 01:57:13 far apart. You've got to wonder what's going through that um's head. Absolutely. That pitch misses again for all three. A little bit low. Three balls. One strike. Men on first. The storm scratch crossed their first run of the game. Here is the pitch.
Starting point is 01:57:33 The pitch. High high slider. Yeah, a little bit high. I mean, that's the kind of pitch I'd be throwing in MLD the show. Higden asked for a new ball. Oh, I didn't like that one? No.
Starting point is 01:57:51 You got to imagine. And I tell you what, back in my playing days, I was a catcher, going out to meet the pitcher, in this kind of situation, you know, I go back and I think about my playing days. I'm thinking, okay, we've got a big lead. I'm going to go out. Things in this inning aren't going exactly, according to plan. Go out and reminding him, hey, you are. pitching masterfully, you're having a little struggle right now, but we're going to get over this. I'm right here. Keep delivering right now,
Starting point is 01:58:22 and we'll get out of the city, right? Absolutely. I mean, again, you know, with two outs in the inning, two men on, we're in the seventh inning now. You've got to imagine this is probably Higden's last batter, no matter what the outcome is. And I think the catcher, Will Malard, knows that, and I think Higden knows that. And, yeah, he's probably going out there. Reassure him. He wants him to get through this inning just as much as anyone else wants to get out of this inning. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:58:54 As it's one ball and one strike with two outs, Higden pitching masterfully, that one swatted. High fly ball. Sam, I tell you what, that was cranked. That was cranked. He got way out in front of it, though. Ripped it, foul. That's what Higden was going for, though, to be fair. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:59:11 Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's got one ball two strikes. You can't serve up a meatball with cheese like that and not expect that to get swatted. One ball, two strikes. Hickton trying to get into the dugout. The pitch, inside. Did that get him? Yeah, he got him. He's going off the first base. We now have bases loaded. Two outs for Higden.
Starting point is 01:59:31 Got himself in a bit of a jam here. As the lineup turns over, we're going to see Yankovic stand back up getting the box. And Higton's going to stay on the mound here. Higden's staying. out. We thought for sure that was his last batter, but he's definitely losing his control a little bit as that one gets in there
Starting point is 01:59:52 right down the middle for a strike. No balls, one strike, two outs. Bases loaded for the Lake Erie College. Storm. You know, the pitch, sent out, sent out into the right field, down the corner fielded by the right fielder. One run
Starting point is 02:00:08 scores, two runs score. It's a two run single. There's men on first and third. Tell you what, Sam. Yankovich puts Lake Erie back into this game. It's now seven to three. Coach is coming out to talk to Hignan.
Starting point is 02:00:25 Unfortunately, that's going to do it for him. Tell you what, Sam, I mean, like we were talking about, not that long ago in this top of the seventh one, they had not scored any runs. We were saying two or three runs. They've gotten three. They've gotten three. That's a crooked number if I ever saw one.
Starting point is 02:00:40 Higden gives up the ball. He knew it was his time. We're going to go to a break. I'm Sam, he's Jack. You're listening to Hillsdale College Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Fox on film. I'm Deborah Valentine.
Starting point is 02:01:00 The Jason Statham Thriller, A Working Man, takes number one at the box office, beating expectations with a $15.2 million debut. Where's the girl? You a cop? You wish I was a cop. So these guys are next level. I'm not too well.
Starting point is 02:01:18 Look at those Brits. You ain't a cop. You're a working man. That's right. Let's play. Snowlight falls to second place in its second week, pulling in $14.2 million. The Queen stole everything from all of us.
Starting point is 02:01:32 We're going to need your help. It's time to restore our kingdom. A trio of newcomers rounding out the top five. The Chosen The Last Supper debuts in third place with $11.5 million. The woman in the yard comes out in fourth place with 9.5 million. And death of a unicorn finishes in fifth place with 5.8 million. Debra Valentine, Fox News. And welcome back to Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium.
Starting point is 02:02:05 I'm Jack here with my partner, Sam Wallace. We're a TFO Partners Field for Charger Baseball. we're hitting in, we're still into the top of the seventh. We've got a pitching change. It's seven to three charges if you're just joining in with us. And like I've said, we've got a pitching change. The left hand are coming in to try to close out this seventh inning. Sam, give me your thoughts on what's transpired as of late.
Starting point is 02:02:28 And how the charges are going to try to get out of this troubled inning so far, maintaining their, what has turned into a four-run league. Yeah, I mean, they've been in the driver's seat all game. I mean, three runs in the first, two in the third, and then one in the fourth and the fifth piece. There was 7-0 coming into this inning. We had six innings of really masterful four-hit ball from Higden. No runs.
Starting point is 02:02:51 Seven-nothing lead. And, you know, I think he just ran out of gas. He got the bases loaded, gave up a big hit. And, you know, Coach just decided we're still winning by a good chunk, but that's just your time. And I appreciate what you've done. We appreciate what Higden's done all game. But unfortunately, that will be it.
Starting point is 02:03:11 for him. Drew Erd, he's going to step in to take it, and that might have clipped him. Just missed him. Yeah, just missed him, but that's going to be two balls and one strike with two outs. Runners at the corners for Lake Erie. Drew Erd, he's a senior. Fresh out of Sarasota, Florida. He's come a long way just to be with you here today,
Starting point is 02:03:34 folks, just to get it to a three-and-oh count with two outs and two on. Erty was trying to find the plate. He already can't find the plate, and four pitches he walked him. And Sam, I tell you what, that's not the worst thing that could have happened. All they did was load the bases with two outs. It's going to be okay. What they really need to do is focus on this batter, right?
Starting point is 02:03:59 This is the crucial batter for sure. Exactly. And this is their cleanup, Solac. That was Jay Christ who just walked. Christ is that a hell of a game, huh? Absolutely, Sam. He's had a couple base hits, a couple walks. As Solek steps up to the plate.
Starting point is 02:04:24 Probably, he represents the tying run at this point as that ball gets inside. It's one ball, one strike, two outs. There's three runners on with two outs, one and one. Cleanup batter, Solac. In the box, Truberty comes set. Lefty delivers, and that's sent up the middle. Fielded well by Jasek, he steps on second to end the inning. That is what they needed to get out of here.
Starting point is 02:04:55 Solly, what do we think about that play? You know, absolutely. I think that, I think absolutely. Getting them out of this inning, you know, of course, a little bit of damage done. It's 7 to 3, and we were talking about just that. We were talking about how can the storm get back on this game. But I think the Chargers, given that rocking road going through the top of the 7th, the fact that they can limit them to three innings, excuse me, three runs,
Starting point is 02:05:19 is not the worst thing that could happen. The Chargers can go back to work here in this bottom of the 7, maybe put up a run or two and solidify their lead in this game. Yeah, you know, and it's about, you know, they've got four runs to work with too. They've got four runs to work with, too, as we enter the 7th inning stretch. Do you think they're just trying to protect that? Or are you looking for them to be hungry, adding on a little more? You know, I think the chargers are trying to add on more.
Starting point is 02:05:51 They're trying to put gas on this fire. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, they're definitely looking to pile on here. I think they want that seven run lead back, you know. We got number 20. 28 Hutchinson, Augie Hutchinson, warming up in the on-deck circle. As Nicholas Candle takes the mound again for the storm.
Starting point is 02:06:26 Nicholas Candle had a couple solid endings of work. He came in, gave up a run on a basis-loaded walk, but shook it off pretty well. Had a scoreless sixth frame. Well, just their second scoreless frame that they've given up. All game. But here we have Augie Hutchinson. Stepping in to face off against Nicholas Candle again, the left he delivers. Good, he cut by Augie Hutchison, but he misses.
Starting point is 02:06:52 It's no balls in one strike. No outs here in the bottom of the second. That one's put into play. Shortstop playing very fundamentally. You could see those fundamental drills come to work. He was very crisp, very, very, very. very rehearsed. It was nice play, fired it over, excellent throwdown to first. Absolutely. And same as we witnessed in the last inning, we had a pitching change over to a
Starting point is 02:07:19 lefty. You got to wonder if these righties in the lineup may fare a little better against their lefty counterpart pitcher and see if they can maybe put some more balls in play. Well, we're hoping so as Will Millard steps up and the pitcher comes set, that's going to get the inside part of the zone for strike one, no balls in one strike. Just one out. No, nobody on will milard your favorite catcher stepping into the plate as he takes ball one it's one ball it's one strike it's one out it's a four-run game seven to three hillsdale chargers says the pitch comes in milard takes a nice healthy stab but it comes off foul rocketed off behind the bag absolutely sam
Starting point is 02:08:03 college baseball these games and shift unperdictively when the bullpen starts to get involved. We're seeing this out, this infield, definitely backing up a lot. As he sends one up the middle, does that get through? Dives and he gets through. Out to centerfield, Millard in safely to first base. That's a nice, clean single up the middle. Again, just fundamental baseball. As guard Swenson steps up now with one out and a man on first looking to
Starting point is 02:08:33 Keep hammering. Guard with our favorite walk-up song. Absolutely. I tell you what, I want him to be the one I wanted him to be. You understand? He'll never let you down, even if he could, though. No. I mean, this guy would give up everything, if only for Hillsdale Chargers good. As he sends a fly ball out to deep center, back, back, back, it lands.
Starting point is 02:09:04 bounces off the wall. Guard is into second. Millard stays at third. It'll be a double for Swenson. As Millard steps into third base easily, as Billy Perotsky inherits a pretty nice situation, second and third with only one out. And Sam, what were we talking about? It's beginning of this inning.
Starting point is 02:09:26 We were talking about, hey, how can the churchers solidify this lead that they've built in this game? Gave up a little bit of it in the top of the seventh, and here in the bottom of the seventh, just like clockwork. They are coming back and they are answering with runs of their own, hopefully second and third. One out. Absolutely.
Starting point is 02:09:46 Billy Parrotsky's been on his game as he sends one out to center, right to the player. But Millard coming in, the center fielder threw it behind the runner. I don't know why he didn't go home with that. Maybe I don't know what he was thinking. Millard comes into the score. He probably thought that the runner was going to try to go to third from second. Most likely. And maybe he thought he could get it out that way.
Starting point is 02:10:05 Yeah. The old-fashioned way, perhaps. Yeah, the old-fashioned way. That's a classic little way. Regardless, it's eight to three Hillsdale as Will Millard comes into score on the sacrifice fly. That's going to bring up Aaron Jasek, the utility sophomores. He sends one back our way. That hit the net.
Starting point is 02:10:27 I was a little worried there. Eight runs, seven hits, no errors for Hillsdale. Eight runs on just seven hits. for Hillsdale, Colin, no errors. The Lake Erie scoreboard looking a little worse. Three runs on six hits and two errors. Aaron J6 squares up for a bunt, but that's going to be a strike. You know, I tell you what, Sam, he's doing anything he can for his team to get on base.
Starting point is 02:10:49 He's doing what he can because he knows that this is a pivotal inning, right? Because, as we've said, they've re-solidified their lead, and they're doing anything they can to add on saying, hey, this is our game. We've built this lead, and we're going to keep it. Absolutely as he fouls it straight into the catcher's glove. That's going to do it though for the inning. No balls.
Starting point is 02:11:09 That makes three strikes and three outs is Aaron Jasek. Out. And that's going to end the seventh inning. It's eight to three Hillsdale. I'm Sam. He's Jack. This is Hillsdale College. Chargers baseball.
Starting point is 02:11:26 You are listening to 1.01.7 FM. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, your favorite college station for the girls. You about to wish you sat with us and the guys. Starting point is 02:12:41 Field Stadium. TFO Partners Field here for Chargers. Baseball field. Just tuning in with us. We've got an 8 to 3 Charger lead here heading into the top of the A thing. Got lefty on the mound, Sam, and the Chargers looking to hang on. They've got six more outs to a very nice lead or a very nice win, you could say, if they can get these last six outs. Sam, give me your thoughts on what's inspired. Yeah, I mean, I think Drew Erdie's the guy you want on the mound right now. He's got his mojo. He's been doing a lot of like breathing exercises and like deep, deep contemplation, as I understand it. And it's been helping his game to just clear his mind.
Starting point is 02:13:21 He's able to get up there and really analyze the situation a lot differently than your average Joe would. Yes, I was talking to, there is associate head coach Ryan Van Amberg before the game. And he was saying, look, listen for this guy. This is our go-to lefty. comes in for a ball one. Yeah, this is our go-to lefty in those kind of mid-reliever innings. Look for him if we put him in today, which obviously they have, to make an impact in shutting down the storm in those middle innings that are so pivotal
Starting point is 02:13:52 to maintaining momentum throughout the game, right? Exactly. We saw that lead slip just a little bit as that one sent a high-fly ball out to shallow right-field. Right-fielders-in. On the run, Hutchison grabs it. a nice play by him to put one away here in the top of the eighth inning yeah no I think he's the guy you want
Starting point is 02:14:16 and he's been doing a great job he's been doing a great job so far a couple hiccups early on but it's one out now here in the top of the eighth inning as he sends one lofting into that left-handed batters box that's an easy ball
Starting point is 02:14:33 one ball and no strikes One for two officially in this game. Here's the one O from Erdy. The 1-0 from Erdy is a ball two. Drew Ernie from Sarasota, Florida. As Simzac sends one high and deep into right field, right center field, and it's caught. Caught about 15 feet in front of the warning track. That's going to be two outs.
Starting point is 02:15:05 And, you know, they've been putting, they've been making. good contact, but it's one of those things turning that to an out instead of potential extra base. It's one of those things where, you know, you're making really good contact. And you just, you know, it's right to those fielders. And we've got two outs in the setting. Shoot.
Starting point is 02:15:25 And we've got two outs in the same. And we've got two outs in the setting. Two outs. It's, uh, yeah, no, like I was saying, as that one is sent, that one is going to be foul by about 10 feet. You know, I heard, I was doing some consulting work. I heard that Drew actually does yoga, believe it or not. Hot yoga, right? Hot yoga, exactly.
Starting point is 02:15:54 And another, so he finds that's really important to his craft. Well, we were talking about his mojo, his mindset early. Exactly. That's got to be a big part of it. Another thing that he does is he sits on the floor with his legs, is his... Has that one sent down to third bait? Scooped up easily and sent on to first for the third out.
Starting point is 02:16:13 Yes. Yes. Three up, three down here on the top of the eighth. We're seeing that all, that preparation all in play here. He does yoga, hot yoga, as you mentioned, of course. And he also does a specific practice where he lays against... He lays on the floor and puts his feet up against the wall so as to drive more blood to his brain.
Starting point is 02:16:35 Right. Yeah. It's like a head... but not quite. Exactly. Yeah. It's a weird, it's a weird process. Exactly.
Starting point is 02:16:43 He almost, I've seen him do it once or twice. He almost looks inhuman. Yeah, he does it in the clubhouse before every game. Yeah, he's kind of a freak. I mean, when he really look at it. He's like a freak athlete. Yeah. It's like, it's a frightening thing to see.
Starting point is 02:16:57 Absolutely. But, you know, like, it's hard to complain when he goes up there goes three up three down. Yeah, absolutely, Sam. I tell you what, this has been a wonderful game so far, and don't go anywhere. We're going to take a quick break. This is Jack with Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds out of time. I'm Lauren Smith, and if you put a descriptor at the beginning of your sentence, it must match
Starting point is 02:17:32 the subject of that sentence. Let me explain. Here's a question. Here's a question. Here's a question. I'm a sample, after turning down the volume, the music sounded better. That phrase at the beginning, after turning down the volume, is technically an adjective, meaning that it describes a noun, the one immediately following, the music. So, after turning down the volume, the music sounded better, means that the music turned the volume down. Adjective phrases use like this always modify the subject of the sentence, so make sure the subject matches. You could reword the sentence in question by saying, after I turned down the volume, the music sounded better, replacing that adjective with a clause. Or you could say, after turning down the volume, I thought the music sounded
Starting point is 02:18:14 better. That's your Grammar Minute. Visit thegrammerminit.com for more tips and tricks. Ankovich, we're here at TFOP Partners Field. Lenda and Glenda, Hills Stadium. It's the bottom of the 8th. It's Hillsdale College 8. It's Lake Erie Storm. Three. Bottom of the 8th. We've got a new pitcher in here for the storm.
Starting point is 02:18:47 This is going to be Gage Miller. He's a right-handed pitcher. Out is Nicholas Candle. In is Gage Miller for them as Tyler Sowers. Steps back up to the plate, the lead-off hitter for the Hillsdale College Chargers. He's had a good day so far, because he takes ball one. He's inheriting a pretty good lead, but Hillsdale College definitely looking to step back into the driver's seat in this one. As he sends one down door shortstop, it's eaten up pretty quickly.
Starting point is 02:19:19 Caught on a hop by the first baseman, out at first base. One down, Hillsdale College. Next up is going to be Tenuda two bags, Rocco Tanuda, one of our favorites. The pride and joy of Bartlett, Illinois. Tanuta two bags, we call him. He's had two doubles on the day. Looking for him to sauce one into the gap in this at bat. He starts the hands, holds up, but it's a strike anyway, called by the umpire.
Starting point is 02:19:53 No balls in one strike. He's had a couple of hits today. As he takes that one, ball one, that looked a little high. umpire seems to agree it's one ball and one strike and one out to rock out to nutta gauge miller sets again check swing but he did not
Starting point is 02:20:15 hold in time it's one ball and two strikes he certainly didn't hold in time you know i i hope I hope that he can stay in this at bat he's doing a great job this game so far nice little dribbler out to shortstop and a good place taps up the middle but you know what
Starting point is 02:20:31 after a shaky first couple innings by their shortstop, Yankevich. He's really sharp. Coming into form for sure. He's gotten a lot of attention over there, a lot of action, and he's been really locking it in. I'm really impressed with how he's shaped up this game to be. You're wondering if it was a little, you know, too little too late, but...
Starting point is 02:20:54 Good to see him. It looks good. Zach Kent, Mr. Mustache himself, comes in with two out and nobody on here in the bottom of the 8th. The storm pitcher, Gage Miller, definitely doing a good job of setting down the top of this lineup. Kent delivers. Sorry, Kent takes that pitch from Miller. It's one ball, one strike, two outs.
Starting point is 02:21:18 Now the one-one game will be seven things. Now the one-one pitch. One-one delivery here. And it's taken. And what the sigma? That was a ball. Didn't look like it to me. If you're just joining us, it's the bottom of the eighth inning, Hillsdale College is up to bat with two outs and nobody on.
Starting point is 02:21:46 It's three balls in one strike to Zach Kent. The score is eight to three. Two errors and a couple of good hits and a big fly by Lake Erie. Made the score eight to three early on. And as he takes ball four, Zach Kent is going to go take his base. Will Laman, dangerous hitter coming in. Will Laman, very, very dangerous. He had a three-run bomb to start us off in the first inning.
Starting point is 02:22:14 And he comes up, he comes up with four RBIs and a bomb already in the game. He comes in with two outs and one on. What kind of pitcher are you looking at here? You know, he's looking for, you know, I would say a meatball, but I'm not sure he's going to get it given the game that he's had so far. So the pitcher is definitely looking for him to try to bite at something. a little out of the zone. And there we go.
Starting point is 02:22:40 We've got a hard chopper down the left field line. It's foul. But Will Lehman definitely on the attack. It's still 0-2, though he may choke up a little bit. He may shorten his swing a little bit, but he's still looking to put something in play. I think he's definitely picking up some spit on those off-speed pitches. Absolutely.
Starting point is 02:22:59 No balls in two strikes, though. He's running out of time to do it as he sends that one a high-fly ball out into right field. drifting to his right is the right fielder and it's caught will's got a lot of power that looked like a little bloop to right field but it ended up being almost to the morning there's like 300 feet yeah absolutely thanks for joining us we're not done we've got we're going to the top of the ninth inning we've got one more for you it's eight to three chargers i'm sam he's jack this is hillsdale chargers baseball on 101.7 Radio Free Hillsdale. Fox on Games, your insider's cheat code to gaming. Dreamhaven may break out as the newest publisher of great games. Built by one of the

Speaking to journalist and hosts of the Game Awards, Jeff Keeley, they also announced independent game in their publishing that has loads of similarities to Blizzard hit Starcraft called Mechabellum. Starting point is 02:24:29 Or 20 players across five ships face off to secure the valuable artifact and escape. or you can choose of violence. Amen Dignam. Fox News. Get better. All right, here's Sebastian Silva. Sebastian Silva, stepping up into the plate for Erie College Storm. It's the ninth inning.
Starting point is 02:24:50 They're down by five. This is their last chance. This is when you go for broke, Sam. This is when you go for broke. I mean, he's just got to go all the way to the wall. And, I mean, yeah, he's... You might even take it to the window to the wall. You might say that, yeah.
Starting point is 02:25:06 If you were weird, you could say that. And he's going to dribble it down to first base. Gobbled up easily. That's going to be one down. Two outs to go for Hillsdale College before they can put a win in the books and get on home and go enjoy their Saturday evening. You know, I'll tell you what, they've had plenty to celebrate this game. Plenty to be pleased about.
Starting point is 02:25:33 Absolutely. Absolutely. You know, Sam, it's a tale of two different outcomes, right? The Chargers have eight runs, only seven hits. But yet the Storm have three runs with six hits. It's seven to six in terms of hits. We've had errors. We'd have walks done by the storm.
Starting point is 02:25:58 And that has really been the difference, not the hitting of each team. It's been really shaky pitching on the storm's side. And that makes it one ball and two strikes. Oh, Batters not pleads with that call there. No, he certainly isn't. That would be Jones. Alex Jones in our right-handed batter's boxes. He's going to send that hot shot down the right field line.
Starting point is 02:26:22 Gobbled up, oh, and he babbled it in the transition. Sam, did you say Alex Jones? I think that's his name. It is Alex Jones is his name. Wow. He's in some elite company over there. Never thought I'd see him in person. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:26:40 Jones got two hits on the day now. They're going to credit him with a hit as the third baseman dove to grab it. And he had it, but I think he lost it in transition is what it looked like. Yankevich grind out the short in the first inning, the second of the third. This will be Yankovich. He's 0 and 3 with a hit by a pitch in the 7th. He's 0.3 with a hit by a pitch this game.
Starting point is 02:27:05 He had a couple errors, but he was hit by a pitch in the second. He's locked in now. Played two hours and 21 minutes. This game's been a quick one, huh? We've only been here about two hours and change, would you say? Yeah, absolutely. You know, we got here, what, Sam, it just close to one. And, yeah, the charges have made quick work of this game.
Starting point is 02:27:29 Absolutely. I mean, yeah. Well, it's two balls and one strike with one out now and a man on first base. because that one's dribbled, but it's just foul. And I think that went off of himself. He's taking a hike real quick. I kind of hope he's okay. Yes.
Starting point is 02:27:45 And Sam, I'd like to drive my point home a little further with seven hits now by each team, and yet it's eight to three. That just shows you in baseball, the situational hitting, and different things that can happen throughout the game that can lead to very different results with similar kind of input. Oh, of course. Yeah, I mean the offensive production is roughly the same But we're seeing a lot more walks drawn from Hillsdale College
Starting point is 02:28:10 Is that one sent back behind the plate? The count is going to stay at two and two with only one out And a man on first Hillsdale College has done a really great job of drawing more walks And like you said that situational hitting The pitch, the kick sent up the middle that could be two out at first safe at first
Starting point is 02:28:36 replay, yeah relay is not in time it's going to be two outs that was a hot shot off the bat unfortunately the shortstop was playing in that pole in that pole position he was definitely shifted a little far couldn't quite get there in time to make that transition and get the runner at first
Starting point is 02:28:52 well and get out of here but this is going to be Micah Geysie stepping up Trying to keep things alive for the Lake Erie College Storm. As that one is a little bit low for ball one. Well, this is a batter. We've been waiting for us since 102 p.m. This is Micah Geysie stepping up with one runner on and one out,
Starting point is 02:29:21 and he's going to send one out, a little flare out to center, and he's going to keep the storm's hopes alive as there's now two on and two out. He gets in there for a single. Sam, that's a tough position to be in and being the last. You're down to your last out, and you're the batter, right? No one likes it. To keep the game going, that takes, you know, that takes some serious.
Starting point is 02:29:45 It takes some, some. Cajolades. Yeah, it takes some gonads to get up there and keep playing at an elite level. I mean, that was a textbook, line drive, perfect, perfect, Bryce Harper straight up the middle. Absolutely. I feel like I'm back playing the show right now with you saying. Those were the glory days, huh? 1-0 delivery.
Starting point is 02:30:07 1-0-2-3-3-3-3-8-1-strike to Christ is in there for a strike. A mall, one strike, two outs, two on. It's 8 to 3 Hillsdale, as Christ takes strike two. Lake Erie Storm now down to their last strike. J. Christ is in the bottom. box. They're looking for him to be their savior. Absolutely, Sam. We'll see what he can do here.
Starting point is 02:30:36 We'll see what he does. With one and two, two outs. The swing. Oh, no swing. Ball gets behind the catcher. Runners are going to advance. And you know, Sam, it is now second and third and a two count with two outs. With a five-run lead, all that does take away the force out. Oh, yeah. They don't really all they do. Those runs are not
Starting point is 02:30:52 super important. Meaningless runs. Yes, exactly. They're just runs. But still, you've got to think it's a little bit dangerous. makes it easier to grab those runs. Here's the set by Erdy. And the pitch. Erdy doesn't want that for his own personal stats.
Starting point is 02:31:08 No, yeah. And Christ's doing them well. Fighting it off, right? Yeah. Yeah, fighting off the evil. Yes, absolutely. Truly. It's two balls, two strikes, two outs.
Starting point is 02:31:19 We'll see on this third day of the series if he can rise again here. Swing and it's sent over to shortstop. This could end the game. The pit, the throw. Out! It's in time. Game over. Hillsdale College wins 8 to 3 over the Lake Erie College Storm.
