The following is a special presentation of WRFH Sports.
Welcome to TFO Partners Field for Charger Baseball this afternoon.
I'm Christian Papuil. My partner in the booth is Thomas McKenna,
and you are listening to Radio 2 Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Thomas, do you have anything to say about the game today?
Absolutely. Well, before we go to some pregame interviews,
Let's take a look at the pitching start for today.
We've got on the mound for the Chargers.
Freshman Daniel Higgin.
He's sharing the rubber with senior Noah Candel,
so a freshman senior matchup today.
Daniel right now has had five appearances so far this season with 19 innings pitched.
He's had 17 strikeouts, but he's given up a few runs.
Higden's ERA right now is 884.
So as he gets to start on the mound today here at home, he'll be looking to keep those strikeouts going.
Over on the, for the Dragons, we've got Noah Candell.
His history is not long, but he's a senior.
He's a tall 6-6 righty, and we'll be looking for him to bring up the strikeouts as he's had five so far this season.
over five innings pitched.
Before we go to the action on the field,
let's go to some pregame interviews done by Hannah Connolly.
I'm here with Max French,
third baseman on Hillsdale Chargers baseball team.
Max, what adjustments do you think the team needs to make
in order to secure a win against the same opponent as yesterday?
Yeah, I would say offensively,
just planning out our barrels,
less weak outs in the air,
more hard hit line drive, swinging at better pitches.
And can you share your thoughts
on the strength of Tiffin's team?
and how you plan to counter them this time around.
Yeah, they came out with a lot of energy.
I think we just have to match that and stay in the game for the whole seven-in-in-stretch
and just be consistent with that.
All right, thank you.
Good luck today.
I'm here with Zach Kent outfielder for the Hillsdale Charger baseball team.
Zach, are there any specific challenges or strengths that you anticipate facing the opposing
team today after just playing them yesterday?
Yeah, I mean, we didn't hit very well yesterday, so hopefully we could hit better.
I guess that's the first part, you know.
We've got to score more runs than them to win the game.
So we're going to go out there and fire like that today.
Awesome.
And as an individual player, what do you do to stay focused and maintain a positive mindset before a game,
especially after losing to them yesterday?
How do you keep that momentum up?
Have fun.
It's warm out here today.
Excited to be out here with the boys, you know.
Let's go out here and kick some butt.
All right.
Thanks, Zach.
Good luck.
All righty.
And before we go to the action on the field, we'll see for the Hill Still Stoll
Chargers is a player to watch as their leadoff hitter at the third baseman Rocco Tanuta.
He's batting 321, the best of the chargers this season.
He's out of Bartlett, Indiana, and we'll see him on the field shortly.
But for the top of the first, play-by-play, we'll go to Christian Papillon to take us to Charger
baseball.
Thank you, Thomas.
Yes.
Chargers coming off a loss yesterday, looking to get back into the wind column at home.
and before the game starts, we're going to send it to a break.
You're listening to, oh, never mind, sorry.
We've got a lead-off hitter, Griff Katie, in the box.
And the pitch.
And that's away for a ball.
Away for a ball.
Griff Katie, the outfielder, he's playing left field today.
He's out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
He went to Winona State.
As he checks his, no, he does not check his swing.
That's strike one.
Well, the righty, the six-foot-two righty,
as a sophomore for the dragons.
And that's hit over the second.
Turner throws him out at first.
That's one out to get the charger started.
Now it's Dichel in the box, the designated hitter for the Dragons.
Dichel is left-handed hitter, and he'll take ball one.
And he'll take ball one.
He goes home for four with a walk.
and the pitch
and the next pitch
that looks like it's low
for ball two
Higden's last start
he went only two innings
giving up eight runs on six hits
he expect he's looking to go
longer today
the 2-0
and that's called strike one
Higden
really trying to
get the strikeouts here
that's what he's good at
The 2-1 delivery
The 2-1 is low for a ball
The count is 3-1
The top of the first inning here
Dejel is the designated hitter for the
For the dragons
And that's hit over into left
It's caught
By Hardenberg
That'll bring up the number three hitter.
Logan Swanger is in the box also a left-handed hitter.
The right fielder.
Here's the pitch.
And that one is inside for a ball.
Logan Swanger has a...
has been hitting well this season with a 350 batting average.
The 1-0.
That's grounded over to first.
Shannon will take it all on his own at first, and that's the end of the inning, the top of the inning.
You are listening to Charter Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, and we'll be back right after this.
Come to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and here are some words you may have been using that don't
exist. Runner-ups should be runners-up. A lot is never one word unless you're talking about, say,
allotting a piece of property. A lot is two words. Participator is no. It should be participant.
Mischievous should be mischievous with three syllables instead of four. Thusly might be a
favorite of college students writing papers, but it's not a word either. Just say thus.
English is in ever-evolving language and things change over time.
Just pick up a copy of Chaucer if you aren't sure how much they've changed.
When in doubt about whether a commonly used word is acceptable, consult a dictionary.
This can also help you judge whether the word is formal enough to be used in print.
That's your Grammar Minute. Visit thegrammerminit.com for more tips and tricks.
Welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
that's the bottom of the first inning and the Findlay dragons have candle on the mound
yeah the senior uh the senior out of uh for for for tiffin has not pitched much for the dragons over
his career but going up against a freshman on the mound today uh he's uh he's certainly a threat for
the Chargers.
And the leadoff man for the Chargers is going to be Rocco Tenuda.
Very good leadoff hitter.
An OBP over 400, it's 438, actually.
And over 300 batting average.
Yeah, Tanuta has been hitting well for the Chargers.
The 300, over 300 batting average is something, it's definitely a threat, especially coming from a freshman for the Chargers, as we see him.
step into the box.
Reading off for the charges from
Bartlett, Illinois, number 32.
Rackard to Nita.
Do you know those in the box?
And the pitch.
That's up for ball one.
Hey, here we go, boys.
The freshman out of Bartlett, Illinois,
looking to get on base to start off the chargers
here in the bottom of the first.
The pitch, it's fouled, solid swing there.
Just a little bit behind it.
1-1 pitch.
And that's a way for ball two.
Count is 2-1, bottom of the first inning here.
Still a scoreless game.
And the 2-1 pitch, it's grounded up the right side.
Diving stop.
And that is won away.
That was a good play.
It sure was.
A diving stop by the first baseman going to his right.
It looked like it might be a base hit for a second,
but the first baseman makes a stab and puts it away,
flipping into the pitcher candle before the out.
And that'll bring up the right fielder, Jacob Saly.
First pitch, it's out.
It's outside for a ball.
It comes the 1-0 pitch, and that's fouled down the right side.
Got just behind that one.
Sully does not have much in terms of game log history this season.
He's also a freshman out of Otsego, Michigan, perhaps Christian, the Michigan native, can help us.
He hasn't had that much.
He is hitting 269 on the season and slugging five.
So he does have a lot of power in that bat as he takes the pitch outside ball two.
That's the count is two two with one out in the bottom of the first.
Sailing has six home runs this season.
So a lot of power potential there.
2-2 a pitch is outside.
That's ball three.
It's full count here.
And here's the payoff pitch.
He will draw the walk.
For Salih, that's his seventh walk of the season.
Will Shannon.
Over 67 at bat's his seventh walk.
And now we've got Will Shannon in the box.
The first basement.
on the team and he will take the first pitch for ball one.
Shannon hit 388 with 15 doubles and 13 home runs last season.
He's hitting over 300 again this season, slugging close to 600.
1-0 pitch, runner goes, and he's safe at second base.
And Christian, that throw was a bit high and up towards the shortstop,
but the throw there was still probably,
too late even if it had been right on the money
a stolen base for sully a good throw
maybe would have gotten him but
well the jump is certainly good
definitely and the two low pitch
and that's fouled back and that's strike one
again Shannon was one of the best hitters for the
chargers last season he was an all region
first baseman and once again hitting 388
Now he's here in the third spot for the Chargers.
That's a swing and a miss for strike two.
Just adding more about Shannon's hitting.
He slugs 697 last year with 30.
He had 13 home runs and 15 doubles.
And he's batting 325 this year, just a dip from last year.
And that is, that just misses.
That's ball three.
And the count is full yet again.
We're here to another full count, Christian.
Mm-hmm.
Three-two count with one out and runner on second for the Chargers.
Here's the payoff and that's fouled back.
Chargers have a scoring opportunity here.
Go on, Gannon, let's go, bud.
Especially with one of their best hitters in the box.
That's right.
With a runner in scoring position, this is a prime opportunity for the Chargers with one out.
is the pitch
that's ball four
so the Chargers will have
runners on first and second
with one out for their
designated hitter Jeff Landis
a collective good eye
for the Chargers team here
two walks put a runner
runners on first and second
so already this is a good situation
for the Chargers
it's the bottom of the first you've only got one out
and now you've got your four hole hitter
coming to the plate
and Landis already has four home runs on this season as he takes ball one hitting 288 with the 515 slugging
and the catcher has gone out to the mound to try to calm his pitcher down a little bit
yeah in this situation you've seen your pitcher throw with two walks and and now you're here with a
first ball that was pretty far off the play I mean in that situation as a catcher you're definitely
to just calm your pitcher down, figure out your next few throws, and then bring them back in.
And here's the 1-0.
And that's grounded up the right side, fielded.
Oh, and he throws it away.
And everybody's safe.
The bases are loaded.
That was a throwing error by second baseman on the dragons.
I'm nother.
And without a hit, the chargers are already in a great position here.
Again, only one out.
Base is loaded, and now you've got your five-fifth-spot hitter coming to the plate.
It's the catcher Will Mallard in the box.
Hitting with the bases loaded and only one out.
Here's the pitch.
And that's called strike one.
Correction, they're calling that last one hit.
Even though the second baseman tried to go to second for the double play.
and threw it away.
And here's the O-1 offering.
And that's fouled.
Fowled off down the right side.
Well, the catcher Mallard represents a bit of a dip in the Chargers lineup here.
He's batting 216 this season with two home runs and three RBIs.
In 14 games, he's played.
Now he's looking to bring that up.
Comes the pitch, and the O2 is outside, ball one.
Well, it does seem Katie has been able to get some.
strikes in here.
You're sure he's looking to getting out to try to get out of this jam.
Here's the one, two.
And that's second balls.
Two and two with one out.
The base is loaded here in the bottom of the first for the Chargers.
This is a key at bat here.
Sure is.
It's a big pitch.
The 2-2 is outside for ball three.
We're again at a full count.
Christian, the third full count this half inning.
Not only are you getting runners on base, not only are you getting the pitcher rattle,
but you're also wearing the pitcher down.
You're throwing his pitch count up higher than he'd like to be in the first inning.
And here comes the payoff and swing and a miss.
Strike him out.
That's a big out right there for the dragons.
Well, not what you're looking for if you're the chargers,
but you've still got one more opportunity here.
You two months.
And Joe Hartberg, the left field are coming to the plate.
Hardenberg is hitting 274 this season, and he has five home runs.
Bases loaded two out.
Here's the pitch, and that's called for strike.
Hardenberg is senior out of Northville, Michigan.
The right, he has 14 RBIs on the season, looking to get a few more here.
And here's the O-1.
That is outside.
Ball one.
Again, if the charges have succeeded in anything, this first half, first inning,
it's getting the pitcher's pitch count up.
Yeah, until that strikeout, there was only one well-hit ball by Tenuda and everything else was a walk.
He fouls off strike two right there.
Katie is already at 26 pitches this first inning.
And here comes the one-two.
And that is way outside, ball two.
Again, wearing him down.
We're deep into the count here, 2-2.
Definitely made him throw a lot of pitches, working long counts.
And Tanuda had a hard hit ball off of him.
And here's the 2-2.
He checks his swing.
That's ball 3.
We're back to a full count here.
Two outs, full count.
Base is loaded here, Christian.
three times in a row or something i don't i think milard had a full count on him too yeah we're down to
the fourth full count and the payoff is it's fouled off runners in motion and here comes another
three two and that's also fouled off here really big chance for the chargers here with
base is loaded and here comes the three two and that is lined into right center that's going back
Glein Buck, it's at the wall, and that will be a double.
And Landis is out, but the other two runs score.
It's a two RBI double for Joe Hardenberg.
So the Chargers get a couple of runs out of it as we end the first inning and go to a break.
You're listening to Charger Baseball here on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, and we'll be right back after this.
Welcome to the old ballgame, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen.
Today we talk about the origin of baseball's favorite concession food, hot dogs.
At early ball games, there were no official concession stands, but local people would sell food to fans,
who tended to eat things you would eat without utensils.
And at the beginning of the 20th century, German immigrants began to help shape the culture,
and people began to love their docks and sausages, which were served with a milk roll in sourcrow.
In the 1860s, Chris von deraahi, a German immigrant and owner of the St. Louis Browns, introduced the hot dog to baseball fans.
At first, they were served without buns, and instead, customers would keep the white gloves that the hot sausages were served on.
However, the gloves were eventually not being returned, and this frustrated the company.
Somewhere along the line, the split bun was introduced, and it fit just like a glove, and now countless hot dogs are eaten every ballgame.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
The Chargers lead 2-0 going into the beginning of the second inning,
and the Dragons are sending Mirabal to the plate.
He is the team's catcher today,
with Higden still on the mound after having pitched a scoreless first.
Well, the catcher, I see a mirror ball out of Bayside, New York.
the first pitch and that is taken for a ball one higden ran a couple of long counts last inning but
he looked pretty good generally speaking and that is a drive to right field it's down it's in the
corner mirabal's going for two and he will take his stand-up double well that stand-up double is just
another example of the strong hitting we've seen from mirabal this season he's batting 333
with 19 hits and this will be his fifth double of the season.
And now the dragons send famine to the plate.
He is the center fielder today, Thayman.
And here's the pitch.
And that is outside for a ball.
Looked like he was trying to show a bunt, but pulled it back.
Tommy Thamean, the senior lefty out of Cincinnati,
of Ohio like many of his teammates
batting 362 this season
and he pulls back
in other buns and that's ball too
bunting in the situation might make
some sense you got a runner on second you're trying to push
to third if you could push it down the first base
line especially that might be ideal
and here's the two
oh pitch and that's
called strike one that's the
third bun he's pulled back this at back
Christian
yes maybe he's just trying to get the infield to
play him shallow
Well, with one strike on him, it'll be interesting to see if he shows again.
Here comes the 2-1 pitch on its way.
He checks the runner.
And that is called strike two.
It's 2-and-2.
Higden has battled back from a 2-0 deficit.
Well, if you're famed right now, you're thinking I've shown Bunt three times,
and then now I'm stuck at 2-2.
Got to maybe swing the bat here.
And he will swing, and it's lined into center.
That's a base hit.
Thaman has a base hit.
Runner will stop at third.
It was a shallow line drive to center field by Thaman.
I'm thinking it was a good decision to hold the runner there.
Certainly not enough even for the fastest of runners.
Especially, you'd much rather have runners on the corner with no-out than just a runner on first or even just second with one out.
Absolutely.
No reason to send them here.
Here's the pitch.
And that's into right field.
Chasing it, and it's foul.
It hooks foul.
Hoseka is a rightie, junior righte out of Gahana, Ohio.
He's batting 273 on the season with two doubles and a homer.
That one was very close to extra bases there.
It sure was.
It was right in the corner there, just barely fell foul by a few feet.
Dragons have runners on the corners.
Nobody out.
Chargers still lead two nothing here in the top of the second.
and a pickoff attempt, not really a pickoff, just trying to keep the runner honest there.
He certainly didn't, he didn't even come set there.
I wonder how much that runner's in his head right now.
There's the O-1.
It's down for a ball one.
Well, Higden facing his second threat of this game, he's got a runner on first,
or his first threat of this game, he's got runners on first and third here.
And here comes the 1-1.
And that's called for a strike.
It's 1-2 here.
Well, Hazica, with a 500 slugging percentage,
he's certainly a threat at the play,
especially with runners on base,
including one in scoring position on third.
Yes.
Higden comes set.
Here's the pitch.
And that's grounded up the right side.
Shannon fields it, goes to second,
and they'll get the out,
but they'll allow the run to score.
Well, the Chargers get one out, but the dragons get a run.
The throw to second was a little low.
It bounced in the dirt.
You got to think that prevented the second baseman Turner from getting the ball in to Mallard at Kestra to try to get the runner out.
It wasn't even close at the plate.
No.
And here comes Brazier to the plate, facing Higden with the runner on first and one out.
And that is ball one.
Well, now with the dragons on the board with one out, I think there was.
willing to take that sacrifice at second to not have a runner on base and a run on the board.
Here's the pitch. It is fouled back. We have a one-one count.
On that fielder's choice play, it may have been wiser to go for the out at first and hold the runner at third there,
but maybe they thought they could get the double play.
That certainly.
And that is grounded to third. Tenuda feels it.
throws to first
so
so the dragons
will get a runner
on second here
but they retire
his Zick
retired Brazier
with Hizica now at second
it'll be
the third basement
Ty Hatfield batting now
against Higden
Higden checks the runner
and pitch
it's outside
ball one
Hatfield
a junior
He's batting 268 this season with five hits or 15 hits and four doubles and eight RBIs.
And that is called for strike one.
One in one here.
So two outs here with the dragons in scoring position.
I think the optimal hit here is just a line drive and to either side to try to get that runner home.
Here's the pitch.
That's grounded up the left side.
J-Sake will throw him out at first.
And that's the end of the inning. Chargers get away with only giving up one run.
And we're going to send it to a break. You are listening to Charger Baseball here on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. And we'll be right back after this.
You're listening to What's in a Name. Though this particular Michigan City's name at first look has a fairly simple origin story, it's a bit more complicated than at first seems.
The name Detroit comes from a French word that means straight like a body of water, which in turn comes from the city's name.
positioning around the Detroit River. The river comes from Lake Erie, one of the five great lakes.
The city still remains as one of the oldest and most important cities in the Midwest. Though the name
comes from French settlements in the early 18th century, which was roughly 300 years ago,
the land itself has been populated for over 11,000 years by many different peoples, including
the Iroquois and the Huron. Rich in resources, it was highly contested, and after many battles
ultimately ended up within the United States, first as a territory and then as part of
the state of Michigan. It has since earned the nickname of the Motor City due to its history with
Henry Ford. This has been what's in a name. My name is Megan Pitcock and you're listening to Radio Free
Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.m. The chargers are
leading two to one after giving up one run in the top of the second and they come to the bottom
of the second sending up passanel jacic and turner thomas the next three coming up for the charges are
danny passanel jacob sully and tyler turner passanol is senior struggling at the plate this season hitting only
197 with seven rb i's and but he's quick on the bases he's got four stolen bases already this
season and passinal is a good hitter he hit three hunt over 300 on all of his other seasons here at hillsdale
So maybe it's just a matter of a slow start.
Well, that's certainly possible.
Center fielder for the Chargers is here in his senior season,
hoping to make it as strong as his last three.
And here comes the pitch.
And check swing fouled off.
That'll make it strike one.
Not high and inside pitch.
If it had just been a few more inches in,
he might have hit pass and all,
but instead he just fouls it off the,
the handle of the bat.
Pitch.
That's called for strike one.
Well, Passanol in past seasons, as was mentioned by Christian, hit very well.
He was averaging over 300.
His on-base percentage was good in past seasons as well.
That's drive down left field.
That's a fair ball.
Passanil is looking extra bases.
He's cruising.
He makes the turn.
He thinks about three, but he will stop.
at second with a double.
A strong start to the game for Passanil.
That'll be his fourth double of the season.
The senior out of Traverse City.
Now on base for the Chargers and scoring position.
Looks like Tiffin has a new pitcher in.
Jonathan Ray is the new pitcher, right-hander.
And Aaron Jasek is going to step in.
And here's the pitch.
Ray checks the runner.
And that is strike one.
Jasek looked to Bunt, pulled it back, and still got the called strike.
Jasek, the freshman is a two-way player.
He got the safe for the Chargers last week in one of their first games in this stadium.
Here's the 01, and that is Bunted foul, and that is an 02.
We have Tyler Turner in the on-deck circle.
waiting to bat
here comes the O2 delivery
and that is outside
that's a ball
again no outs here with a runner on second
the chargers are in prime position
to put more runs on the board
and that's skyed into left
looks like Katie is under it
he gets it and the runner will hold it
second. Well, you saw Passanol think about taking third on that one, but then he thought better.
It was a deep fly to left, but it wasn't so deep that a runner could tag and score a third.
He only took a few steps off second before he thought better.
And it was also to left and not to write.
It's got to be basically to the wall and probably more towards center to make tagging up a wise decision in that situation.
Tyler Turner steps in with the runner on second and one out.
And here's the pitch.
And that is ball one.
A redshirt freshman from near my hometown, Potomac Falls, Virginia.
He's only batting 143 this season in the nine hole.
With only one out, you got to think the Chargers are looking ahead to the top of their order
with their best hitters coming up after Turner.
Especially how much damage the top of the lineup did last inning as he takes strike.
two. The Chargers have been attacking early in the lineup this game, getting quick base runners,
and then some of them come around to score eventually. There's the one two. Ground ball foul.
One two counts here with one out, bottom of the second. Turner staying alive with a runner in
scoring position. Comes the one two, and that is outside, two and two.
Well, the Chargers have succeeded in one thing already besides putting runs on the board,
and that's getting the starter for the dragons out of the game.
Katie was pulled by his coach after a first inning giving up two runs on only one or two for only one hit.
And that's fly ball into right.
Looks like he's under it.
Makes the catch.
And Passenol will retreat to second.
It was not a super deep fly to right field, but it was farther towards the line.
So far away from third base thing for the Chargers is that they had Passanol running on the pitch.
And so the hit and run in that case might have prevented them from putting Pasadnoll on third on a sacrifice fly.
But instead they're stuck with two outs with a runner on second at the top of the lineup for the Chargers.
And here comes the first pitch to Tanuta.
And that's ball one.
Toonuta grounded out to second his first time up, but he hit, it was a hard hit ball on a difficult play for Tiffin to make.
Here comes the 1-0 delivery, and that is there called for strike 1.
And as we mentioned earlier, the Tuna the freshman from Illinois is hitting well.
He's hitting 321 with a homer and 10 RBIs.
Here comes the 1-1.
That is low and away.
That's ball 2.
2-1 here with the Chargers leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Tenoota, one of three freshmen in the Charger lineup alone with Turner and Jasek.
And the pitch misses outside as a 3-and-1 count.
A 3-1 count with two outs.
Here's the pitch.
And that's strike.
It looked like he thought that may have been ball four.
Another 3-2 pitch here to the Chargers.
These Hillsdale batterers have been working the pitchers deep into the count.
There comes to 3-2.
And that is outside.
Ball 4. Chargers will have runners on first and second for Sali, who walked his last time up.
Never a good thing to put a runner on base.
But in this situation, with a runner on second, you're down by 1 and first base is open.
It's certainly a better outcome than letting a dangerous hitter like Tenoota take a fastball over the plate and put it in the gap.
Now Sully.
It's outside, ball one.
So Lee hitting 269 for the Chargers this season.
He's got six home runs with 11 RBIs.
His slugging percentage is high too.
He hits her power, 582.
1-0 is outside ball two.
Chargers are really working counts this game.
They've run a lot of long counts.
They've already knocked one Tiffin pitcher out of the game.
Besides the lack of control for Katie last,
inning. It was certainly driving of his pitch count that probably put him out of the game.
There's ball three. He's probably going to be taking on this pitch. Sure, with a 3-0 count here
in two outs. Here's the pitch. And that's in there for a strike. Kind of have to take there.
That's certainly the pitch that Salih was expecting, but now he's still got a 3-1 count in his favor.
That one is outside, and the bases are the last.
loaded once again for Will Shannon.
And Shannon last time walked along with, it was the second walk of the inning.
And now the dragons will meet at the mound and think about this one.
We're back here with bases loaded for the Chargers, this time with two out.
A dangerous hitter like Shannon coming to the plate.
Shannon is definitely the power bat on the Chargers.
Absolutely.
He's hitting 325 this season with two home runs and nine RBIs.
On his career last season, he was hitting 388 and hit $2.50 this season before.
So the junior out of Bloomfield Hills is a dangerous hitter.
Hills steps up to the plate with bases loaded, looking to put more runs on the board for the Chargers.
It looks like the Tiffin is going to stick with their pitchers.
and trust him to get Shannon out.
Well, if you're Shannon in this case,
you're probably looking to just get a base hit.
I mean, while Shannon can certainly hit it over the fence,
the most he needs to do is put it over the Indrich Fielders' heads.
Or even just work a good count like he did last time when he drew the walk.
Another walk here scores a run.
He stops to the plate.
Here's a pitch.
That was low and away.
That's ball one.
1-0 here here comes the pitch from ray and that is called strike one well if there's anything you
don't want here is to get deep into the count with the 3-1 or 3-2 count if you're the pitcher
in this case and instead now we're starting off with a 1-1 count here comes the 1-1 that's
grounded up the right side just foul that was dangerous that one that could
have been two runs for the chargers and depending on where it went down there in the gap might have
been three there's a lot of room down there on each side of this new lended and glenda hill stadium
especially on the left side it seems absolutely it kind of dips down to only about to a tight
corner but there's plenty of room just past the baselines there's the one two and that is into left
center that looks like it's going to drop that looks like it's going to drop that looks like
like it could be extra bases and Shannon will stop at second and that's a three run double everybody
scores he clears the bases for the charges that's exactly what the charges we're looking for in that
scenario you bring your power hitter up two outs with bases loaded and he drills a ball into the left
center gap all the way to the wall the center field was playing over towards the right side maybe out of
strategy or for some other reason maybe with the way the wind's blowing out just a little bit to
right field this afternoon but a deep hit the left center gap scores three for the chargers they've now
got a sizable lead of five to one we've got Jeff landis at the box designated hitter today
and he also drew a walk his last time up here's the pitch swing and miss let's strike one
Landis described by the Chargers staff is one of the top hitters for the team.
Lefty Senior looking to put another on the board with a runner's scoring position.
And that is popped up way up there.
Looks like shortstop Grabowski will make the play.
And that will end the second inning.

Welcome to the old ball game where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm T. Christensen.
Today we talk about the connection between baseball and Thanksgiving.
At one point, baseball, not football, was the American sport of Thanksgiving.
The games played on Thanksgiving Day were not entirely organized events, but many clubs
would come together to play to mark the end of the baseball season.
As the evening standard once wrote, quote, in the afternoon, there were several scrub games,
that is, games which the various clubs unite and play together.
The regular ball season is considered to close with Thanksgiving,
though many games will doubtless be played throughout the winter when the weather will permit, end quote.
In 1887, a New York Times article advertised a Thanksgiving Day game to be played on the polo grounds.
Later, the Times cited 1887 as the origin of indoor baseball,
which eventually morphed into the game of softball.
Yale and Princeton began playing American football on Thanksgiving,
and that tradition stuck around.
As baseball became more organized, it arranged for its season.
to come to an end in October.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
The Chargers now lead five to one after a three-run double by first baseman Will Shannon,
and they send Higden back out to the mound to pitch the third inning.
Higden has only given up two hits today in one run,
so he's looked a lot more solid than his season average would indicate.
He might be figuring it out this season now.
Well, the nine-hole hitter for the dragons will come to the play, Aidan Grabowski.
He's a junior out of Avon Lake.
The right he will step to the plate.
There's the pitch, and it's up for ball one.
He's batting 271 on the season, which is an improvement over past seasons for him,
where he was just around 200.
And that is a fly ball, but it will curve foul on the right side, and that's strike one.
Again, it's a chilly day here in Hillsdale. It's only about 34 degrees. But in classic mid-March, Michigan weather, the sun is out.
There's blue sky.
That's right down the right field line, just foul.
And that's strike two. That was close to extra bases there.
Yeah, that was certainly a dangerous.
just hitting to the gap. That ball was going
just hooking
foul. But if had made
hit the ground before
the foul line, that would have
probably been a double.
There's the one two and that is
foul ball.
Just barely got a piece of that one.
It's a Grabowski here
already with a one two count.
Now he's just looking to make
contact.
Here comes the one two
from Higden.
that's down the third.
Tenuda will have it, and he'll throw to first, and with plenty of time to get the out.
It should start to the inning for the Chargers, but now they will face the dragon's top of the lineup here.
We'll start with Katie coming to the plate, the left fielder.
Here comes the pitch, and that is away ball one.
Well, Katie in his last bat,
bowled to the right side, now it's a one-two.
So, sorry, that's strike one.
So Higden is definitely throwing the strikes today.
Katie grounded out to second base in his last at bat.
That will be swinging a miss for Katie.
That's strike two.
Higden is leading in the count now, one ball two strikes here with one out.
And that is, oh, just up the middle.
Diving stop by...
But that will be an infield single.
That was a nice stop by Turner, just not quite in time.
It was a sharp hit up the middle, a hard ground ball.
It barely got past the pitcher Higden,
but the second baseman Turner was able to stab at it,
keeping from going to center field.
He got up to make a throw to first and threw it over there,
but it was certainly not in time.
No, it was missing by a few steps.
Solid hitting by Katie just got right past the pitcher there.
And the first pitch is a ball won.
To Dietl.
Sophomore Adam Dechell, the lefty,
he's been hitting well this season with a 339 average,
464 slugging percentage with a homer and two doubles.
That's the 1-0, and it's,
ball two.
Chargers haven't really fallen behind in the count very much on the mound.
They've seen they've either given up quickouts or hits.
The 2-0 is up the, oh, just passed to Nuda into left field.
That's a base hit for Dichel, and that's back-to-back hits for the dragons.
And now Tiffin's got a man in scoring position.
threatening for the second time this game.
And now with the top of their lineup here,
now we're going to their three-hole hitters Swanger.
This is a dangerous place for the Chargers to be.
Got their right fielder, Logan Swanger, the lefty,
and Higden delivers.
That's in there for strike one.
Swonger in his last bag, grounded out to first base,
and was able to make the play then just up on the bag on his own.
The O-1 is low for ball 1, so Chargers may be letting up a little bit this inning.
Need to get back on the gas.
Well, sure, you've got a runner in scoring position again.
Higden delivers the 1-1, and that's a swing and a miss, strike 2.
A sizable crowd for the Chargers here in their new stadium.
Higden with the 1-2.
And that's called strike 3.
That's two away.
that's a big out right there for the chargers.
Well, Swanger just watched that one come by.
It looked like a breaking ball that cut in from the back door just to nick the outside part of the plate.
Coming from a righty to a lefty, that was probably looking like an outside fastball,
and that just dipped in to catch the corner of the plate and sit down Swonger without him swinging.
And now we have Mirabal, and he will take the first pitch, ball one.
Isaiah Mirabal, the catcher.
for the dragons.
Higden won out away from getting out of this little jam here.
And here's the 1-0, and that's low for ball, too.
He's been hitting well as well, like his other teammates.
Last season, he had 357.
He had five homers.
But coming into this season, he's hitting 333,
and he's already gotten 19 hits this season.
that's ball three to mirror ball and three oh count now higden's in danger if walking the base is loaded here
definitely not a good position that the charges want to be in you're in a three oh count there are two outs here
three oh and that's called strike one he didn't like that call it looks like mirror ball's looking back at the umpire
he's not so sure about that strike he's still ahead though three one three one three
and that is into right field
and it will get just
stay up just long enough for Salida
make the play so the Chargers
going to the bottom of the third still lead
5 to 1 and you are listening to Charger Baseball
here on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM
and we'll be right back after this
this is the Making of America
from the Jefferson Media Group
the year is 1842
and a patient is about to have a tumor
surgically removed, but for the first time in history, it will be done painlessly. Born in
Macon County, Georgia, Dr. Crawford Long was a surgeon and a pharmacist who had experienced the
brutality of performing surgery without anesthesia. But all that was about to change. He administered
sephoric ether on a towel and had his patient breathe through it. And to the delight of everyone,
especially his patient, the operation was painless. Dr. Crawford Long had discovered anesthesia. In 1840,
he used that same method on his wife during childbirth,
and it must have worked because she bore him 12 children.

Welcome back to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
The Chargers lead 5 to 1 going into the third inning,
or the bottom of the third inning,
and it looks like the Dragons have yet another pitcher out on the mound.
Yeah, looking out there, we'll be able to see his number in a moment.
It's number five.
Matt Cardin.
We'll come on for Tiffin.
He's the third pitcher of the game for the Dragons.
You have to think all of these full counts and long at bats for the Chargers as well as putting five runs on the board and four hits.
That's worn down the Dragon said that they're already reaching into the bullpen for their third pitcher in three innings.
Yes, their first two pitchers haven't seen that much success, giving up multiple runs each.
Well, the senior righty will take, the senior righty from Lewiston, New York will take the mound for the dragons.
And the charges will send Will Mallard up to the plate.
It's the eighth appearance for Cardin this season.
He's started, he's gotten one win and one loss, and now he's coming in for relief.
He's got a 338 ERA, but he's only pitched eight innings this season.
So again, one of his first appearances of the season.
And here's the pitch.
And Malar will take it outside for ball one.
Again, Malard hitting 2.16 this season.
He struck out swinging his last time at the plate.
Ono pitch is down and away.
That's ball two.
Mallard, the catcher for the charges.
There's two home runs already this season.
He's got three RBIs.
He's slugging 4.59 right now, but he's only hitting 2.16.
It means he does have a lot of.
power and that's called strike one so it's a two one count now with nobody on and nobody out and it's a
chilly saturday afternoon here in hillsdale winds blowing and that's a fly ball into right center
looks like swunger will make the play and right and that's one away for the dragons
This will bring
Pass, this will bring
Hardinbur up again
for the Chargers.
The wind is blowing
pretty swiftly right now
across left to right field.
The American flag
deep out there
in right center field
is blowing open to face
out towards the right field
foul pole.
Here's the first pitch to Hardenberg.
That's called strike one.
Hardenberg had that big two-run double
in the first inning that opened the scoring for the Chargers.
Maybe he'll hope his bat stays hot.
He's batting 274 this season.
And that'll be a ball long and away.
It's one in one.
Hardenberg has five home runs this season.
He's another one of the stronger hitters for the Chargers.
And that's a pitcher.
He will try to check his swing, but he still goes around.
That's strike two.
Well, defense is playing.
just a little bit shifted towards the left side right now.
Infield is playing a little bit deep too.
And that will be a called strike three on Hardenberg.
That's two away.
Well, if we're being charitable here,
that breaking pitch looked like it caught the outside corner of the plate.
It certainly had a lot of movement on it.
You could tell Hardinberg was not a fan of that call from the home plate umpire.
And here's Pasinole.
he also doubled his last time up and that will be a called strike one passanil the left-handed hitter playing center field today
and that's up the right side that's going to be a base hit and that's a two-for-two day for pass-in-old with the single and the double
that's right that double in the first inning was what the chargers needed and now he's back on base
And now Aaron Jasek, the shortstop, will step to the plate.
He flew out to left field last inning.
Again, the freshman from Kalamazoo, he'll look to get his first two of the day.
He'll take a pitch outside part of the plate, strike one.
Jasek flied out to left field after pass, Nils double in the second inning.
Oh, pickoff.
Looks like he's safe at first.
Pickoff attempt there.
That was a quick move.
It was a close play at first.
Passanel was able to get back into the bag,
but not without a bit of stress to the first base coach, I'm sure.
Now he'll take a sizable lead again.
Pitcham Cardin, and that one gets away from the catcher,
and Passanil goes to second.
So now JASIC will have a runner in scoring position with the 1-1 count.
Well, Pasadol has four stolen bases this season.
You wonder if the drags,
I can see him as a threat, which calls for the pickoff move and then the pitch of throwing it away.
Perhaps he was thinking about the runner instead of the batter.
And here's the one one pitch, and that's outside ball too.
Some of these outside pitches look a little bit like pitch outs to me trying to hold the runner.
Perhaps.
Or with Jasek at the plate.
2-1, it is a ball just a little bit high.
that looked like a breaking ball from our vantage point christian i wonder if he was just trying to drop that in at the top of the zone instead he stuck with a three one count the runner in scoring position
pitch it's outside and j sick will draw the walk another walk for the chargers today that'll bring up the nine-hole hitter turner the second baseman for the chargers turner flew out to right field last time but it was pretty deep hit and
Chargers have another chance to add more runs.
That's swing and a miss, foul tip, and that will be strike one.
Well, the Chargers already have a four-run lead here.
The score is five to one.
But now they've got runners in scoring position again after another walk.
That is in their strike two.
So Cardin quickly gets ahead, O and two, on Turner.
And I'm just looking, I think all the runs, the Charger have
scored today have been with two outs so some clutch hitting so far by hillsdale absolutely another
situation like that here with two outs runners in scoring position oh two and that one is outside so it'll be
one and two with two outs and there's a runner on first and second here for the chargers turner the redshirt
freshman from potomac falls he's batting 143 this season that one is up for a ball and it's two and two
another breaking ball from the pitcher card in here.
You wonder if he's trying to pitch around some of these hitters.
They see the charger lineup as a threat.
Or it's possible being up in the county tried to get Turner to chase a pitch.
But now you're sitting here with a 2-2 count and two-outs.
An opportune moment for the chargers.
Here comes the 2-2, and that's up the left side.
Shortstop gets it.
And it will not be in time.
Everybody is safe.
The bases are loaded.
And lead off men, Rocco Tunuta will step to the plate.
This is a great situation for the Chargers.
A huge moment for Hillsdale.
You've got your nine-hole hitter trying to just get on base to bring you back up to the top of your lineup.
Tunita coming up to the plate for his third at bat of the day.
He's been hitting well this season, as we mentioned.
He's hitting 321.
He's over one with the walk today.
And there's, looks like a breaking ball out there for ball one.
One o.
And that's in there, strike one.
A basis loaded moment for the Chargers here.
As Christian mentioned, seems the charges have scored all of their runs with two outs.
And yet another situation like that here in the bottom of the third.
The 1-1 is outside ball two.
Again, just another example of Charger hitters,
ahead in the count.
Making the pitcher throw them
strikes, getting deep in the count.
Again, we're on the third
pitcher of the day for the dragons here.
Six walks already
for the Chargers. And that is into
left field. That's going to be extra
bases, possibly.
Passanoff scores, J6
scores. Turner
will hold at third, and Rocco
Tanuta will be in there with the double.
A huge hit for the
Chargers here. I'll give him another two runs
put them up seven to one.
There was a sharp line drive down the left field side.
It didn't make it all the way to the wall,
but it made deep enough for the Chargers to score two.
And now we're back into the heart of the Charger lineups
with Salih coming to the plate.
Soleil has two walks today.
So no official at-bats yet.
There's the first pitch, and that misses ball one.
Well, after the Chargers fell to Tiffin yesterday,
7 to 0 in the opener of this series you got to wonder this is a this is a big moment for the
chargers to be up this much this early the 1-0 also misses and it's ball too and with the dangerous
hitters Shannon and land is afterward here shannon already has some rbis today swing and a miss
at the 2-1 at the 2-0 now it's 2-1 seems like card's deciding he's got a pitch to to sully here
there's some pitchers warming up in tiffin's bullpen
The 2-1 misses and it's ball 3.
And Cardin is in danger of walking the base is loaded here.
Again, Jacob Sully, a strong senior hitter at catcher for the Chargers.
He's hitting 269 this season.
That's called strike 2, so it's a full count with two outs.
And a runner on second and third for the Chargers at the bottom of the third.
Well, for Jacob Sali, he's certainly dangerous with the power at the plate, slugging 50.
582.
And the payoff pitch called strike three.
He thought he had the walk there,
but the Dragons will escape having given up two runs.
Chargers lead seven to one going to the fourth inning.
Well, so he thought that one was low,
but instead that's the end of the rally for the Chargers.
Yes.

seven to one after a big two-run double by Rocco Tanuta.
And looks like Daniel Higden will come out on the mound again for the fourth inning.
He's pitched a solid game so far today, only given up one run through three innings.
And now the hitter for the dragons will take ball one.
Tommy Thaman, single-to-center field, his first at bat last inning, back in the second.
and he will take strike one there.
Damon, I believe he's the, he's, no, he, sorry.
Thaman will shoot it to left field.
It's foul.
Thameon, the senior lefty out of Cincinnati.
He's hitting while, he's hitting 362 this season.
And that includes two doubles and two homers.
And here's the one, two.
And that's the one, two.
and that's low for a ball.
So we're at two and two here.
Again, here we are, chilly Saturday afternoon.
Chargers lead seven to one.
Higden and another foul ball up the left side.
Well, he's late.
You've got to wonder if with a two-two count,
he might be looking to either foul one off
or if he gets him as a three-two count,
Hickton might be looking to throw a fastball
and then he can get his timing right
there's the pitch
and that is there
right back to Higden
Higden is going to take it all by himself
well that was a quick fielding
by Higden there
a chopper back up
it looked like it might go to second
but Hickden stuck his glove out
grabbed it and walked over
I'll say jogged over the first
for the quick out
and now there's one out
Zika
and that is ball one.
Muzica had the fielder's choice earlier that scored the Dragon's only run of the game so far.
That's right.
That gets away.
The junior second baseman has also been hitting fairly well this season with 273.
On one is in there for strike two.
So now after that fielder's choice, we're in the part of the lineup where the dragons have been able to make contact,
but they haven't always been able to transfer that into runs.
And the one-two pitch will miss outside.
It's two-and-two now.
With Brzeer on deck,
foul that one off.
That's still strike two.
The dragons have had some hits at the plate today.
And the two-two will miss up, and we have a full count.
Four hits compared to the sixth of Hillsdale,
you'd think the score wasn't such a difference, but with all the walks for the Chargers.
And that is out into right field.
Looks like Salih is going to make the play just into foul territory.
That's two away.
Higden now making quick work of the Dragons here.
Two batters up, two batters back down.
We'll go to the seventh hole hitter for the Dragons.
The first baseman Brazier will now face the Higden,
who's been able to get through these.
batters with not as much trouble as you'd expect from a freshman pitcher.
And here's the pitch, and that is out for ball one.
Brazil grounded out to third the first time up.
Here comes the pitch, and it's ball two.
And we have two outs, and the bases are empty here for the Dragons.
Kyle Brazier, the senior righte from Canada.
The 2-0 pitch misses again for ball 3.
So Higden is in a 3-0 count where he has not given up a walk yet today.
Here comes to 3-0, and that is called strike 1.
Now Higden deeper in the count than he's been in the past.
3-1.
It's fouled back and the count is full.
So he's caught right back up in the count.
A chance for Higden to have three-up, three down in the inning.
Pitch and that misses high ball four that's Higden's first walk of the game
well that just demonstrates the kind of command that the freshman pitcher has had this game
he's only had one walk and that translates into just one earned run for the the dragons
and now he'll face towards the bottom of the lineup with the eight-hole hitter
yeah that field coming up to the plate right-handed hitter he shows Bunt
takes ball one they look like they try to backpick the runner but they don't quite get him
if anything it keeps that runner honest higden is trying to work quickly so maybe they think that
his tempo is becoming predictable set the pitch and that is called for strike one well with a runner on
here this might be the tiffin's opportunity to just try to put some hits down and some runs on the board
but they've got a long ways to go and the pitch
misses for ball two.
So Higden made me
losing a little bit of his command
going deeper into the game.
He's pitched three solid innings.
Sure, maybe his
stamina is starting to dwindle.
He's about 68 pitches right now
over three innings and
two-thirds.
So if he can make it through this inning,
that'll be a good start.
And there's the two-two,
and that's fouled off on the right side.
Now it's two balls and two strikes with the runner-runner-un-first and two outs.
A crisp 35 degrees here in Hillsdale.
It's a chilly wind blowing out towards right.
And a swing and a miss for strike three,
and Millard will throw to first to complete the strikeout.
That will end the inning for the Dragons as we head to the bottom of the fourth.

If you haven't seen it, you should because there are pictures of llamas there.
I was on Instagram this afternoon, partly because very few people on that app are formal enough to use semicolons.
There's one particularly wrong way to use semicolons, and that is using them to say.
separate items in a list. I like chocolate milk, comma, hot chocolate, comma, and cocoa.
These items should be separated with commas, not semicolons. The only time it's acceptable to separate
list items with a semicolon is if the clauses themselves have commas in them. So for example,
I might say, I like sweet things like chocolate and hot cocoa, semicolon, salty things like
chips and guacambole, semicolon, and hot things like tacos. Because each item in the list includes a
comma, it's okay to separate these with semichorns.

Here the Dragons have yet another pitcher in the game.
Looks like it's a righty sidearm pitcher.
Yeah, Sexton here coming into the game.
He'll be the fourth pitcher in five.
In as many innings.
In as many innings, thank you, Christian.
In four innings for the dragons, they're making quick work of each pitcher as the chargers get these pitchers into deeper counts,
force them to rack up the pitch count and work through that bullpen.
Again, this is the second in a four-game series.
So you have to think Hillsdale isn't just thinking of this game, they're thinking of the next two.
As they tried to come back after their series opener, where they lost 7-0 to Tiffin yesterday.
yesterday. But here they are with a good cushion of a lead, seven to one through three innings.
And now we'll head to the top of the fourth as the Chargers will send their third hitter to the plate.
Will Shannon, the first baseman.
Shannon had a three-run double earlier this game in the second inning.
He's slugging well. He's got a 575 slugging percentage. He hits for power.
They'll foul it back, that's strike one.
After seeing three other pitchers who didn't have such a distinct pitching motion
and now having to face the submariner,
it'll be interesting to see whether this affects the charger hitters at all.
You're seeing the ball from down low now instead of up high.
And that's ball one.
At least from our vantage point in the box here.
It's a lot of movement on that pitch.
You can get a lot of horizontal movement.
for the side armor there and that is up the middle and that's going to be a base hit for shannon so that's two
hits for shannon he's two for two with the walk today there's a strong line drive right up the middle
the second baseman for the dragons huzzica it looked like he was close to to grabbing that ball if he
climbed the ladder just a bit more instead it's a lead-off single for the chargers as jeff
Landis comes to the plate.
Comes the pitch from Sexton.
And that one's in there for a strike.
It looked like there was some good movement on that one.
Landis, the fourth spot hitter for the Chargers.
He's the designated hitter, and he's been hitting well this season, 288.
That is into right field, looking back at the wall,
and is caught by slander.
and Shannon will retreat to first base.
That was a deep hit.
That was close, especially with the wind,
with a bit of a breeze blowing out to right.
That could have been carrying it just enough
to have a shot of making it out,
but instead it falls short,
just off the warning track.
Good play by swangor out there.
Now, Will Mallard will step to the plate.
Takes a pitch inside for a ball.
Well, we're through the most difficult part of the Chargers lineup here.
Now the catcher Mallard will step to the plate.
Here comes the 1-0.
But the runner going, and up the first base line,
first baseman Brazer will make the play,
and Shannon will advance to second base.
Well, it's probably best to describe that hit as a swing button there.
It was just tipped off the end of the bat and made its way up the first base line.
First, it looked like it might go foul, but maybe it caught a bit of the spin on the turf there
and was able to stay in fair play.
So the first basement was able to pick it up, step on first.
Now the charges have a runner in scoring position with two outs.
And there's the first pitch to Hardenberg for a ball,
Hardenberg with that big two-run double in the first inning.
All Hillsdale runs have come with two outs.
So you could say Sexton has done as well as other pitchers up until this point.
Let's see if you can close the deal.
And that's ball two.
And all of this pitcher usage, like you said earlier, in terms of the greater series,
it's good for the Chargers because they're playing another game later today, I think.
That's right.
And with that series, maybe the Dragons just end up pitching each pitcher for an inning or two
and trying to keep them alive.
As Hardberg takes strike one, it's two and one now.
There's the two-one.
from Sexton.
And that is outside for ball three.
Oh, a little casual looking backpick from the catcher there.
Shannon's back on second easily,
but it looked like a throw back to the pitcher,
turned into a throw to the second base,
just to keep the runner honest.
Make sure he's paying attention there.
And here's the 3-1.
That's up the left side.
Hatfield throws him out at first,
and the charge.
have their first scoreless inning against them this game,
Sexton will get out of the inning without any damage.
So as we head to the top of the fifth inning,
you are listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM,
and we'll be right back after this.
This is The Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group.
On August 6, 1945, an atomic weapon was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan,
in hopes of ending World War II.
However, few are aware for days prior to the bombing, American pilots dropped leaflets over the city, warning the people to leave.
Read this carefully as it will save your life, it read,
We are in the possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man,
and then it urged them to evacuate their city.
Even though over 100,000 people lost their lives in Hiroshima,
the Empire of Japan still refused to surrender.
It took a second bombing on Nagasaki before the Emperor Himaliki,
himself ordered the surrender over the objections of his military leaders.
This has been the Making of America.
I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com.
So, and welcome back to Charger Baseball here in Hillsdale.
We're entering the fifth inning as the Chargers bring back, bring out their starter again.
Daniel Higden has pitched four innings so far, only giving up.
four hits in one run.
It's a strong start for the freshman
as he faces the Tiffin Dragons
here at home with the new Chargers
Stadium.
Now batting for
the Dragons is
Gabe Gabreski.
A bunch will not
come out
and it goes back to the backstop.
One out.
Grabowski grounded the third last inning
against Higden
so this is the second time facing
the Hillsdale starter.
0.1. Grounded to third.
Just foul.
Off the foul side.
Looks like the strategy might be with the double
header today is to get as many
quality innings out of Higden as possible.
Well, he's certainly delivering through four
innings. It'll be
a 02.
Grounded to the second baseman,
easily fields it, throws it to
first, just barely
keeps his toe on the bag, but
Shannon will be able to take that one and turn it
into the first out.
That one was a little bit close there.
Throw almost pulled the first baseman Shannon off the bag.
Well, instead of an error, it'll be the first out for the chargers.
And now we'll come back to the top of the order.
But it looks like there might be a substitution of some sort happening here.
We've got the third base coach coming down.
The third base side, he's about to talk to the home plate umpire.
or maybe we're looking to challenge the call perhaps
that's what it looks like
perhaps from the third base coachman coach's perspective
Shannon might have come off the bag at first
it was an easy ground ball to the second baseman
it shouldn't have been much trouble but the throw was just a bit wide to the right
especially he didn't have to rush the throw it was right at him
maybe the third base coach is just asking them
talk about it. That's what the umpires are going to discuss here. Maybe they're talking about what they
each saw. It's hard to see them overturning this call here. I mean, first base umpire calls them out.
First base umpire was right there and third base umpire didn't really have the angle on the play.
Well, he didn't. The throw might have gone more towards the, towards right field there.
it's hard to tell for that home plate umpire whether that toe came off the bag because he's just looking straight at the bag from the home plate
the discussion continues this has been at least a minute pause in the game and they're going to call him safe they overturned the call
Shannon did take his foot off the bag the umpires say and now the charges coach vassela will come out to talk about it
He's not so sure he agrees.
If we had to guess what he's saying, the home plate umpire,
the Hillstoke coach is asking,
you're a home plate.
How can you see if the foot comes off the bag?
While they're talking it over?
Look, there's nothing wrong with asking the umpires to talk it over
and see if one saw something different than the other.
It's hard to see the home plate.
umpire having a good enough angle to overturn his partner at first but that's what the umpires
have done and so it'll be one runner on with no outs for the dragons as the lead off hitter for the
dragons will come to the plate we're back to the top of the lineup katie one for two today had a
base hit his last time up a pitch low and outside it's a ball well that's certainly a change
the dragons, definitely something that might spark a rally this inning.
Grabowski with a bit of a lead.
It'll be a 0-0.
Ball low.
Especially valuable to have a runner on as you bring the top of your lineup up.
Absolutely.
A shaky start to this inning for the Chargers.
An error lets a runner on base.
Now the 2-0 to Katie.
And it's low, 3 and 0. Higden in a rare situation where he's behind in the count.
Now with the run on first, the 3-0 pitch, low and a walk for the Chargers.
That's only Higden's second walk of the game.
And that might be it.
Hillsdale coach is coming out to talk about it.
This might be it.
Now they're going to talk it over.
Ball hasn't been handed over yet.
Vassella might keep higden in.
And he's been pitching well.
Besides this inning, he's only given up four hits and one earned run.
The Chargers lead seven to one here in the top of the fifth.
And with the team up six runs, maybe you don't want to burn another pitcher just yet.
Well, they're still talking it over.
Let's see what they say.
Vesla is going to keep picked in in.
The starter will still keep.
pitching for the chargers no outs runners on first and second second man eachel's going to step to the
plate also one for two today that's right with no outs runners on first and second the pitch a bunt
third base side fielded thrown to first shannon takes that and that'll be one out for the
chargers but the runners move spots and it'll be runners in scoring position for the dragons
have just run out as their third hitter swanger will come to the plate solid bunt by dechell
there up the third baseline made it very difficult for tunta to get any other out besides the out at
first now third hitter swonger will come to the plate the pitch high ball one first base open
Higden might have liked to pitch Swangor a little more carefully.
This might be the best opportunity the dragons have had so far.
The 1-0.
High fly ball.
Deep right field.
It's going to drop.
It's going to go almost all the way to the wall in the right field corner.
Here comes Katie.
And the throw is off and late.
Two runs for the dragons off of right-field double for Swanger.
And now the score is 3 to 7.
and the dragons put two on the board.
Call at first base
at the beginning of the inning now, it's
looming large. It will be
an unarmed run for Higden there, but
still not what the
Chargers are looking for. At the beginning
of this inning, their lead
is now cut down to four runs
as the fourth hitter, Mirabal
will come to the plate.
Ball won. Now you wonder if Higden
looks a little rattle, that one came in the dirt.
Yeah, if you're
Coach Vassella, maybe you watch how he handles this hitter, then decide whether to pull him or not.
That might be in the cards for Higden.
One out.
The 1-0 pitch from Higden.
Low.
Not what Higden was looking for.
Now he's back.
Behind in the count.
With a runner on second and the top of the fifth.
The 2-0.
It's a strike.
Dignan is still showing that he has some command of the ball.
He has been running longer counts as the game goes on.
Now it'll be a 2-1 to Mirabal.
The pitch.
Grounded to third.
He'll take it.
Checks the runner.
Throws to first.
He got it.
The runner will easily make it into third.
No throw from the Chargers first baseman Shannon.
And now that's two outs.
But with a runner on third for the Dragons, they're still threatening as their fifth hitter.
Tommy Thaymond will come to the plate.
Damon is one for two today as well.
He had a base hit his first time up and grounded out to Higden.
And the first pitch is a strike inside fastball.
It'll put Higden ahead of 1-0.
The Chargers still have a bit of a lead,
but it's not been cut down by two runs this inning.
O'1 and a foul ball off a check swing.
It looked like it might have hit the hitter Thaman, but instead it hit his bat.
And now the Dragon's hitter is behind early.
Big pitch right here for Higton.
Absolutely.
Two outs.
Runner on third.
Top of the fifth.
The Trojers lead by four.
The set and the pitch.
Grounded, up the middle, fielded by the second baseman.
Throw to the first, barely gets him by a step.
And that'll end the inning.
Well, the dragons get two runs and cut the charger lead down to 7 to 3.
We'll come back to the bottom of the fifth after this.
You're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
We'll be back after this.
Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tick Christensen.
Today we talk about the origin of the seventh inning stretch.
There are two commonly told origin stories.
The first has to do with President William Howard Taft.
When he was president in 1910, he threw the first pitch at an opening game in Washington, D.C.
Following the top half of the seventh inning, rumor has that the taft stood up from his seat to stretch.
The crowd thought he was leaving and stood out of respect.
The second myth centers around a small school in New York, whose coach and also the Catholic school's prefect of discipline,
saw that the crowd was going a bit stir-crazy.
So, in the middle of the seventh inning, he called for a timeout so that spectators could stretch.
The game then carried on as normal.
No one knows for sure which, if either of these stories,
stories are true. But regardless, the tradition has stuck around for many years. This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM.
Welcome back to Hillsdale, Michigan for Charger Baseball. As we enter the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers lead 7 to 3, and their pitcher Higden, their starter has gone four or five innings so far, and only given up five hits and three runs. A good start for the freshman pitcher. And now the charges will come back up to,
bat with their seven, eight, and nine hitters, Pasol, Jasek, and Turner coming to the plate.
So Christian, a good start to the game for the Chargers.
Again, only a seven-inning game here.
I wonder if the Chargers might want to put some more runs on the board.
Especially against yet another pitcher for the Dragons pitching.
Hedges is pitching now, number 28 for the Dragons, another righty.
This is the Dragon's fifth pitcher in five innings.
You have to wonder if they've got the rest of the series in mind.
They only trail by four runs, but perhaps they're trying to save their bullpen arms
by throwing a bunch of different pitchers one inning.
Yes.
And it's puzzling to me because their last pitcher in the fourth inning seemed to pitch much better.
So I don't know why they would have pulled him.
Maybe he's a one-inning pitcher.
Well, perhaps they're trying to save arms for the next two games coming up after this.
Well, coming up to the three games,
the play the center fielder for the chargers danny passanel he had a double last time up yeah he's
two for two today with a single and a double well the first pitch of the inning breaking ball low and inside
it'll be a ball one again a chilly afternoon here in hillsdale winds blowing just a bit another pitch
low ball two that looked more like a fastball
Hesdale 7th, 7th to 3 is.
Asynol, a very good career for the senior.
Career 300 hitter with the chargers.
The 2-0.
Drive, deep centerfield.
It'll go well hit.
Oh, just caught by the center fielder, Thaman.
He'll pull it down and keep the chargers off the base paths.
One out is the next charger hitter.
JASIC, the shortstop will come to the plate.
And JASIC has drawn a walk today.
He's over one.
Another well-hit ball from Passinal.
You have to wonder if that one just gets down or further out into the right center gap
if he's able to get on base.
Now the pitch to J-SIC inside, brushes him off the plate.
It's worn out.
And J-SIC having appearances,
both as a shortstop and as a pitcher this season.
Absolutely.
He got the save for the Chargers last week.
And the 1-0 is a strike.
Jasek watches that one go by.
Fastball in the outside part of the plate.
Now the counts 1-1.
So one out.
The Chargers are up 7 to 3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Freshman J-Sac at the plate, the set, and the 1-1 pitch.
It's just outside and low.
All two.
for the chargers.
That pitch seemed to have some good movement on it.
Just swept a little too far out.
It sure did.
There's been more finesse from the dragon's pitchers
the further into their bullpen we get.
You have to think their starter was their fastball pitcher.
So the 2-1 pitch,
ground ball up the middle.
Second baseman will come charging in.
Take it, but he draws him off the bag.
The throw was just wide to the right.
And so at the first baseman, Brazier,
will have to take his foot off the back to keep the ball in front of him.
And so now, after a erroneous throw from the second baseman,
the charges of a runner-on as Tyler Turner, their nine-hole hitter,
is coming to the plate.
Those hits up the middle are tough to field
because the middle infield doesn't know if it's going to go to the pitcher or not.
And it looks like the pitcher for the dragons just missed that play.
So with a runner on and one out, Turner will await the pitch.
from hedges.
Hedges first.
That's a high fly ball.
Into right field is hooking towards the foul pole and just foul,
but also just outside the glove of the right fielder.
Swanger dove and tumbled into the wall.
He barely kept himself off.
It looks okay, though.
He's brushing himself off.
Well, a few more feet, it could have been,
fair but probably also would have been caught turn will stay alive now oh one count again in this
new stadium here for the chargers that they christened last week there's a lot of room down the
sidelines but once you get towards the corner there's only about 10 feet between the foul pole
and the right side wall hedges throw back to first a pickoff move that almost gets jacic back at first
It was close
That was a close one
I just will turn his attention
Back towards the hitter turner
JASIC leads
And the O
Oh
and the pickoff
Back to second
JASIC is in a pickle
He's running back
And that's it
Jasek out
Picked off the
throw goes back and forth
between
first and second
but is enough to
get the freshman jasic he was caught trying to steal on the motion jacic was going instead of a pitch it was
a pickoff and that's the end for the charges first base runner of the inning now instead of
one one on and one out now you have nobody on and two out it's a two out it's the oh one just outside
and low leadoff hitter rakotanuna in the on-deck circle he had the two-run double in the third inning
That's a tough break for the Chargers.
An eager base runner turns into an out.
The 1-1.
Driven into Reitzner Field.
Swanger is back.
And on the warning track, he makes the catch.
That one was close.
It was carrying out with the wind blowing out towards right field.
But it's enough for the Dragon's right-fielder to make the play.
And that'll be the end of the inning.
So the Chargers get a base runner on on an air.
But that's it.
No, after a pickoff move, no runs, and no hits.
You're listening to Charger Baseball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7.
We'll be back after this short break.
Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor.
Here's Jinnah Suhita.
On June 6, 1918, Gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman was serving near Chautau-Tierry, France.
His company had taken Hill 142 and was attempted to consolidate their position.
But immediately after taking the position, enemy forces began launching several hostile counterattacks against the line.
Sergeant Hoffman was attempting to organize a position on the north slope of the hill when he saw 12 of the enemy armed with five light machine guns crawling towards his group.
Given the alarm, he rushed towards the hostile detachment, bayoneted the two leaders and forced the others to flee, abandoning their guns.
His quick action, initiative and courage drove the enemy from a position from which they could have swept the entire hill with machine gun fire and forced the withdrawal of American troops.
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty,
gunnery Sergeant Charles Hoffman received both the Navy Medal of Honor and the Army Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome back to Hillsdale, Michigan.
We're entering the top of the 6th as the Chargers lead 7 to 3 against the Tiff and Dragons here at home.
The second game of a four-game series, and after a good strong start from the Chargers starter, Daniel Higden, the freshman,
He gave up only five hits and three runs.
The charges were bringing out a new pitcher.
The new pitcher, daily skis will take the mound.
He'll try to face the next part of the Tiffin lineup
as he faces the one, two, three, top the lineup from the Dragons.
Now stepping to the plate for the Tiffin Dragons.
A bun goes back behind the plate, and now it's 01.
But the Chargers up with a four-run lead.
Higden on track for the win if the Chargers hold their lead today.
Chad Stevens now in the mound.
Oh, correction, not daily skis.
It's Chad Stevens.
Now Stevens ahead in the count.
O2 on the first Dragons batter.
Pitch, just outside.
And now it'll be a one-and-two count.
Muzika, not very good luck at the plate today.
He had a fielder's choice and fly-out.
out to right field he's over to the one two high fastball outside but bring the count of two two
we'll see if stevens will let the dragons batter hezika get away from him his tempo's up two two
pitch coming high pop up foul and out of play on the first base side looks like maybe tried to get
on top of him with the fast ball it looks like tiffin might bring another new pitcher next in
inning. Their dugout, their bullpen's active.
The 2-2 pitch to Zika.
Swing and a miss. He got him.
And they'll throw, the catcher will throw the ball to first.
And that's the first out of the inning for the Chargers.
And so Stevens will have his first out of the game, a strikeout swinging.
And that'll bring the number seven hole hitter for the Dragons.
Brazier.
Brazier.
Strike to start off the abat, and it's 0-1.
And the 0-1 pitch, low.
And now we're back to one-ball-one strike.
Chargers lead 7-3 on a Saturday afternoon here in Hillsdale.
It'll be a 1-1 pitch to Brzier.
And that's a strike.
Fastball straight down the pipe.
But Brazier lets that way.
one go by.
Stevens trying to have a quick inning to continue the trend of solid hills still pitching today.
It'll be a one-two pitch to Brazier.
The pitch fastball just outside and that'll keep Brazier alive for a two-two.
Brazier is 01 on the day.
He's got a walk.
The two-two pitch and a breaking ball.
He checked his swing.
says the first base umpire and so we're back to another three two pitch again the charger hitters have been working
the dragons pitchers late into the count not so much for higden now here's stevens facing a three two pitch
the payoff pitch grounded to the third base side easily fielded by the chargers and thrown over to shannon for the out
so that's two outs to start the inning for the chargers a strong start for stevens
Chargers,
bullpen and pitching staff looking good this game.
That'll bring up Hatfield for the Dragons.
Bottom of the Tiffin lineup has not been all that productive.
They have one walk and no hits among them for the bottom four.
The first pitch is a strike, straight down the middle.
Hatfield will let that one go by.
Hatfield 0 and 2 today.
The pitch, check.
And he, a half swing that went around says the home plate umpire.
And now Stevens is already into an O2 count with two outs.
It would appear from these first two batters that the Chargers' four-run lead is safe in Stevens' hands.
And the O-2 pitch, basketball outside.
He lets that one go by.
Chance for a very clean inning for Stevens.
That's right.
We're looking at a one-two pitch here.
He delivers.
Chopper.
to the shortstop.
He'll field it, throw to first, and they got him.
And so that'll be the end of the top of the sixth inning.
Nice play there by J-SIC to close it out.
Three up, three down for the new pitcher Stevens for the Chargers.
We'll see you back in just about two minutes.
You're listening to Charger Baseball and Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language.
which 60 seconds at a time. I'm Lauren Smith and I run the Grammar Minute Instagram account.
If you haven't seen it, you should because there are pictures of llamas there. I was on
Instagram this afternoon, partly because very few people on that app are formal enough to use
semicolons. There's one particularly wrong way to use semicolons and that is using them to
separate items in a list. I like chocolate milk, comma, hot chocolate, comma, and cocoa. These items
should be separated with commas, not semicolons. The only time it's accepted,
to separate list items with a semicolon is if the clauses themselves have commas in them.
So, for example, I might say, I like sweet things like chocolate and hot cocoa, semicolon, salty things like chips and guacambole, semicolon, and hot things like tacos.
Because each item in the list includes a comma, it's okay to separate these with semicolons.
That's your Grammar Minute. Visit Thegrammerminid.com for more tips and six.
So we bring it back here to Hillsville, Michigan for the bottom of the sixth inning.
And the dragons will bring out their sixth pitcher in six innings.
It's a bullpen day for Tiffin.
The sixth pitcher will be Jackman.
Will Jackman.
It would be that the dragons are just trying to use all of their extra bullpen arms
and save all of their regular bullpen arms for next game.
Today and tomorrow.
Well, it seems that every pitching decision that the dragons are making today,
especially being down for runs,
is with the next two games of the series in mind.
After winning the first of this series, yesterday, 7 to nothing,
the Chargers now lead 7 to 3.
Now Chargers will come back to the plate.
Rocco Tanuta, top of the order, for Hillsdale,
as they look to put more runs on the board here in the bottom of the 6th.
We're going to one for two with the walk today.
Big two run double in the third.
The charge your third to basement.
We'll step to the plate.
Jackman will throw the first pitch at the inning.
Strike down the middle.
A strong fastball from the Dragons pitcher.
We've seen more finesse from the Dragons bullpen in the latter half of this game.
The O-1.
Another strike right over the plate.
Rocco watches the first two pitches of the Abat go by.
for strikes. Now he's behind in the count.
Interesting that the
dragons have brought in a bunch
of one-inning pitchers, especially since the last
two kept it scoreless.
The other two pitches are fastball
well off the plate on the outside.
So Tanuda, looking
to stay alive here.
A one-two count
as the charges lead seven to three.
The one-two pitch
way far.
A fastball off the plate
over in the other badgers box.
that'll keep Tanuda alive.
And the 1-2-2-2 pitch.
A strike on the outside corner.
Tanuda not so sure about that one,
and he lets the home plate umpire know.
So the first out for the dragons in this inning,
that'll bring up the second hitter for the Chargers.
Jacob Salio won on the day.
The right fielder will step to the plate.
If I'm writing a four-game win streak into this game,
First pitch is a low ball inside.
Sully with two walks on the day.
He's been on base plenty.
Here's the 1-0 pitch.
Ball low.
And now Sully's ahead in the count early, 2-0.
A nice breeze blowing out towards the right field.
It's been there all day.
And the 2-0 pitch.
Another low and inside.
And now Sully's looking at his third walk of the day with a 3-0 count.
The team today has been the patience of Hillstills
batters. They've drawn a lot of walks and worked a lot of really long counts.
Here's the 3-0 pitch, a strike down the middle. Absolutely, especially early on in the game.
The Chargers have been able to rack up the pitch count for the Dragon's pitchers.
So not only putting runs on the board, but also tiring out the arms.
That might be another reason for seeing so many bullpen arms.
3-1, it's a ball just outside.
And that'll be the third walk of the day for Jacob Sully.
Another runner on base for the Chargers, as they leave.
easier 7 to 3 in the bottom of the 6th well Shannon the first basement for the charters will come to the
plate he's 2 2 he's 2 for 2 today a double and a walk very strong day for shannon who might be figuring
it out of the plate more this point so the pitch a high fly ball sky high center field her back
just before the warning track he'll make the catch so a hard hit ball for shannon but his
day won't get stronger with us at bat.
And so that'll be the second out of the inning for the Dragons.
As Jeff Landis,
designated here for the chargers,
will come to the plate.
Much fewer pitchers thrown by the last three Tiffin pitchers than the first three.
The last three have all thrown between 10 and 15.
The first three all threw at least 30.
So at the OO low and outside,
Landis will see that first one go by.
With a runner on base, two outs, bottom of the sixth, Jeff Landis will look for his first hit of the day.
The 1-0 pitch.
Runner goes outside, throw a little late, and Sully will be in there safely.
The Chargers now have a runner in scoring position.
Now, if things haven't changed, Christian, every run for the Chargers has come with two outs.
And so you could say, while the Chargers have a runner in scoring position, they're two outs.
They're in a very comfortable situation.
Now, the 2-0 pitch to land us.
Low and inside, and that'll be the third ball.
Again, Chargers ahead in the count.
Really good at working that count, then waiting for a good pitch to hit.
That's what they've been doing, especially early in the game.
You'll notice that the right side is playing back.
The second baseman's on the grass, the first baseman, barely not.
And the 3-0 pitch is way outside.
It's another walk for Landis.
Another walk for the Chargers.
Landis is first of the day.
And so now the Chargers with two outs.
Have runners on first and second.
And they're looking at their catcher Will Millard coming to the plate.
So Mallard will step to the plate.
He's 0 for three today.
But now he's got a runner in scoring.
position and another one on first.
He's taking his time,
staring down the pitcher. Now he steps in.
And the pitch.
That's a low strike.
Another RBI opportunity for Millard here.
Now will be an 01 pitch to Millard.
Jackman delivers.
And it hits Millard.
And that will be,
that will load the bases for the Chargers.
Again, we're back here.
Two outs, bases loaded.
And now Joe Hardenberg will come to the plate for the Chargers.
He's one and three on the day.
He opened the scoring too in the first inning with the two-run double.
That's right, a strong double earlier in this game.
Has a shot to replicate that success from right now.
Well, Vasella walks out to say something to the home plate umpire.
not sure what that is about well jackman will step off it's possible the infield will meet
in the middle it's possible that vicella wanted the umpire to issue a warning to the tiffin pitcher
well we haven't seen much chippiness at least from the box up here but you never know what's
going on down on the field as right now the whole infield's at the mound for a little discussion
you wonder if they want to bring the infield in or bring the corners in.
But with two outs, any out gets you out of the inning.
That's right. That's right.
So Hillsdale leads 7 to 3 in the bottom of the 6th.
Two outs.
All of their runs this game have come with two outs.
And now the Tiffin head coach will come out and try to talk to his fielders.
So after an infield conference, the coach wants to join.
for perhaps he wants to say and what they're going to eat after the game.
But maybe he's also thinking about what they might throw here.
Maybe he wants to give his bullpen arm more time to warm up, burning more time this way.
That's a good point.
They are active in the bullpen over there.
That would be the seventh relief pitcher, or the seventh pitcher, the sixth relief pitcher,
for the dragons this game.
Now the umpire going out to break up the tea party on the mound
He is taking a slow walk
A lot of discussion
From the dragons
Yes
It is
And that's probably what it was
Looks like he is
A lot of stalling here
And it looks like the relief arm is coming in
Good call, Christian
There he comes
Kick it off, kid!
strategic delay from the Tiffin dragons there first in infield conference then an infield conference with the manager or with the coach and now here comes their seventh pitcher of the day.
Tiffin going through their bullpen arms quickly probably looking ahead to the next two games of the series.
As he warms up, we're going to send it to a quick break and we'll be right back after this.

Welcome back to Hillsdale, Michigan.
We're in the bottom of the sixth.
The Chargers are leading 7 to 3.
They've got bases loaded with two outs.
And while that might not spell runs for the Chargers, it has all day.
Chargers, seven runs have all come with two outs in the inning.
And now the Dragons will bring on their seventh pitcher of the game here in the bottom of the sixth.
This is Braden Clark.
He's a freshman out of Akron, Ohio.
The righty will come in to face the Chargers next batter.
Pass them off.
Let's go, boys.
Come up, Ray, let's go, Keith.
Excuse me, Hardham.
So as Joe Hardin moves to the plate.
Joe Hardinberg,
he's one and three on the day.
He'll look to drive in some more runs for the Chargers.
Again, Vegas is loaded.
Two outs.
The Chargers lead 7 to 3.
New pitcher for the Dragons.
He'll deal his first in a moment.
And the first pitch was an outside fastball.
Just off the plate.
1-0 count.
You wonder what Tiffin's strategy will be with pitching for game two today?
The 1-0 pitch.
High pop-up, trailing down the right field line.
There might be room for Wagoner.
He hits the wall.
This is the second time the swangor has hit the wall.
It's hard to tell if he made the catch.
We're in suspense just as much as you are, both for the safety and health of swunger and whether he made the catch.
It looks to me that he made the catch.
I hope he's okay.
It looks like he hit the wall pretty hard there.
Well, it's hard to tell.
Trainers running out down the right field line.
So two questions here.
First and most importantly, is Swanger okay?
The second, did he make the catch?
It looked like he had it right before hitting the bullpen wall there.
And you can't overstate how close the catch was to the wall.
I mean, it was a bang, bang catch hit the wall.
But this may be the third out of the inning.
Swanger on his feet.
He has aggressive style of play, it seems.
see it's the second time today he's hit the wall.
Last time it was only a little bit shaken.
He might be all right.
Looks like.
It looks like he's going to take his place back out in right field.
Well, it looks like no catch for Swanger.
If there were a catch, the dragons would be headed off the field, but instead it'll be a one-one count.
Again, Swonger, manning his post back in right field after hitting the wall for the second time this game.
Here in the Chargers' new stadium, there's a lot.
lot of room on the baselines down towards the infield but once you get down towards the wall it's
maybe 10 feet or less between the foul pole and the corner not much space there for a right
fielder like swangor and so when he goes into try to make the catch the wall is definitely on his
mind and he definitely felt that impact but he's back in right field
yeah that bullpen wall definitely cuts in there quite sharply so here's the one one pitch
Two outs.
Another high fly ball on the right side.
The first baseman looks like he could make the play, but it hits the top of the wall.
Almost identical hit, another pop-up that takes the ball down towards the wall.
But instead of making the play, the ball hit the top of the wall.
But that's no out.
Another foul ball for Hardenburg, and one-two count.
could be also the left to right wind that we're seeing as blowing all of these fouls really close to the corner wall.
Absolutely. That American flag has been open-faced blowing out towards right field most innings.
So here's the one-two pitch. Way outside, the catcher was practically on his feet by the time ball that got to the plate.
So base is loaded for the chargers, two outs. They lead seven to three. The two-two pitch.
But inside fastball, the umpull.
higher did not think that was over the play a close call there but it'll be a three two pitch yet another
full count here for the chargers well they're comfortable there as we've mentioned many times you're
probably tired of us saying it all their runs have come with two outs so the three two pitch high it's a ball
it's a walk and a run for the hill still chargers so saline will come in and score on a walk after two
eventful plays down the first base side it's now
on the charges of another run it's eight to three hillsdale over the tiffing dragons so here comes danie
passanil to the plate he's two for three today he has a double on a single a good day for passinal
base loaded the pitch fouled back into the screen so another run for the chargers their lead is now
expanded to five runs eight to three we're here in the bottom of the sixth and they've got another chance
to put more runs on the board a strong hitter of passinal who's been having a good day
The 0-1 pitch, grounded, foul down the right field plot.
That walk to Hardenburg brings his RBI total on the day up to three.
So we have three hitters that are responsible for all eight of the team's RBIs.
So the O2 pitch, just outside counts one-two.
So one-two count, two outs.
And the pitch.
I pop up to right field
and Swanker makes the play easily.
That'll be the end of the inning.
But the Chargers get a run.
They now lead 8 to 3 as we head towards the top of the 7th.
We'll be back with more Hillsdale Charger Baseball.

Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor.
Here's Jinnah Suhita.
On September 17th, 1944, First Lieutenant Donald K. Schwab was leaving his company across exposed ground in France
when intense enemy fire came without warning from the woods directly in front of them.
Schwab protected his men and led them forward into the enemy fire.
He rallied his force and struggled to within 50 yards of the Germans before ordering his men to hit the dirt.
He rushed forward alone, firing his carbine at the German foxels, aiming for the vital enemy machine pistol nest.
He charged the German emplacement, ripped off the half cover, struck the German gunner in the head,
and dragged him back through a hail of fire to friendly lines.
First Lieutenant Schwab's action so disorganized hostile infantry resistance
that the enemy forces withdrew, abandoning their formidable defensive line.
For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, above and beyond the call of duty,
First Lieutenant Donald Schwab was awarded the Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome back to Hillsdale, Michigan.
We're entering the final inning of baseball here in the first of a two-game day
for the Chargers.
It's only a seven-inning game since it's a double header.
But it's going so well for the Chargers.
They lead eight to three as their second pitcher of the day,
Chad Stevens will come back out to the mound to face the Tiff and Dragons.
Again, the Chargers lead eight to three as we enter the last inning of play.
It's the top of the seventh.
And the Dragon's last hitter, Grabowski, will come to the plate.
He's over two.
Stevens looking to.
have a strong inning like he did last time.
Well, he made quick work.
Now we're back here.
And the pitch.
It's a strike over the plate.
It'll start off ahead in the count, 0-1.
Evens, tempo is quick.
The 0-1, just outside.
And so we'll bring the count to 1-1.
Grabowski 0-4-2, but he did reach on an error last time up.
So the 1-1 pitch,
It's low. Again, Stevens has made quick work of the dragons so far.
Just a few hitters last inning.
It's now a 2-1 count, and Stevens has only thrown 16 pitches.
The 2-1, low and inside, now brings the count to 3-1.
Stevens has not walked a batter yet.
Now he's looking at a 3-1 count facing Grabowski and the top of the order coming up after this.
The 3-1 pitch.
Now towards the right side.
Stevens had a very clean inning last time.
Went one, two, three.
Well, he's looking at a three-two pitch here with no outs.
Chargers lead by five.
Umpteenth payoff pitch of the day comes.
It's a high pop-up in the infield on the right side.
It looks like the second baseman Turner has it,
and he'll put it away for the first out.
Four up and four down for Stevens.
Well, we'll try not to jinx it here in the booth, but we got to let you know.
Chad Stevens, making quick work of the Tiffin Dragons here.
But we'll bring it up to the top of the order.
Griff Katie step into the plate.
He's the Dragons left fielder.
He's one for two today with a walk.
So the pitch to Katie.
Easily over the plate, strike one.
Katie watches that one go by.
So with one out, Stevens will deal at the O-1 pitch.
Swing and a miss.
And now we're here to O-2.
Katie, one of the more successful hitters today for Tiffin.
He's one for two with the walk.
So the O-2 pitch from Stevens.
Just off the plate, you could hear some groans from the charger dugout.
They thought that might have been it.
So now we're hitting 1 and 2.
The pitch.
off the dirt
and so now it'll be
2-2 as we come back
lest we
allow ourselves
to repeat what we have said
many times Stevens is making quick work
of the Dragon's Hedrus
here
a 2-2 pitch
foul back into the screen
another foul there
give credit to Katie
he is fouling him off and
keeping Stevens pitching here
he started 02
now we're
an even count
2 2 2
the pitch
strike 3
he caught him swinging
that's 2 away
2 outs for Stevens
5 dragons hitters come to the plate
5 head back to the dugout
and so Stevens will face
his 6th batter
and perhaps
the final one
of the game for the dragons
Steven sets
and the pitch
just off the plate on the outside
Deitchell also won for two today
and he has the sacrifice hit in the fifth inning
the 1-0 pitch from Stevens
and just off the plate again
two fast balls outside
just off the plate
put Stevens behind two of
Steven sets
and the 2-0 pitch
strike
the fastball that did catch the outside corner
according to the home plate umpire
just caught it right
so the 2-1 pitch
and that one catches the outside corner as well
and Tiffin doesn't even know what to think of that one
certainly some jeers and groans from the Tiffin side
bit of a bending backwards
The 2-2 pitch
That catches the outside corner
And that's the game
The Chargers win
8 to 3 here on their second game of a 4 game set
Against the Tiff and Dragons
8 to 3 the Chargers
Pull out the win
And so the series is now even
At 1 to 1
Christian
Work from Chad Stevens there at the end
6 Tiffin hitters come up
And six sit back down
It looks like with that last hitter, he found a spot where you could get strikes.
It's just through three pitches right there.
Well, that's all she erode for this first game of a doubleheader today and a four-game set.
Again, the Chargers win, 8 to 3 after Stevens closes out the game.
So the win will presumably go to the starting pitcher Daniel Higden, the freshman for Hillsdale.
and the Chargers will look to the next two games
and we'll come back soon with the second game of today's doubleheader.
