Starting point is 00:00:00 Game day is here. The players are ready. The fans are ready. This is Charger football. Ruddy's standing at his own 35. He's initially hit up the 35. He's got room. He's going to go. He's going to be 50. One end up beat. See you later. Touchdown Chargers. Cook back to fast. He's set to the backfield. Badger again. Drake Badger. On the sack, receives it at the Charger. He has some room and a burst of speed. Make the kick or miss at the thought. 50, 30, 20, 15, 10. Touchdown Chargers.
Starting point is 00:00:37 McCurn and the gun. It's not a game. It's not a game. He's to the 40. 35, 30, 20, 10, 5. Touchdown. Chargers.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Hillsdale Charger football on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM starts now. Welcome in to Frank Moneywater's stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe VanCat, and we have a GMAC showdown for you today between the Chargers of Hillsdale and the Oilers of Finley University. The Oilers 16th ranked team in the nation. Chargers trying to beat their GMAC rival for the first time since 2021. You can just feel it in the building here, Joe, a lot of momentum at Frank Muddy Waters Stadium.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Beautiful weather here as well. 53, not a stitch of wind. Nice classic cool autumn day in south central Michigan. Now, last week, Eli Boyce, the quarterback for the Chargers, the Hillsdale College coaching staff, finally broke that quarterback rotation between. him and Colin McCurnan and Eli Boyce had a day for himself. Rated
Starting point is 00:02:06 the G-MAC player of the week on Monday. Accounted for over four touchdowns. Now we are going to have a national anthem before the kickoff between this G-Mack Showdown. By Hillsdale College's own, Daniel Sterdy.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Oh, say, can you see? by the dawns early light what so proud it had the twilight's last gleaming whose brought stripes and bright stars through the Paris fight or some parts we
Starting point is 00:03:10 And a Gallant We screamed. And the rock See who the flag was to stay. And a beautiful national anthem there from Daniel Sturdy.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And folks, here we go. It is going to be the Chargers' prolific offense against the premier defense. in the GMAC. Joe, you have a guy that you've marked on your scouting sheet that's going to play a big role in this game. I'm not the only one who's marked him on my scouting sheet.
Starting point is 00:04:47 This Hillsdale College coaching staff has been keeping their eye on number 44. Eric Jones on the defensive end all week. They've been scheming up ways to keep him out of the backfield. He's had a great season. It seems to be living in opponent's backfields. So that's the matchup we're watching today, is this offensive line and this charger offense against that defensive line for the Oilers. The Oilers coming in with 20 sacks on the year.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I look for Hillsdale to try to stay ahead of the chains, not get themselves stuck in passing situations for those defensive line. We can just pin their ears back and come after the quarterback. Finley ranks top five in the nation in points conceded per game. Only 11.7. On the offensive side, as I mentioned before, Boyce with a career. day last week. And as always, the name
Starting point is 00:05:39 Shea Ruddy revolves around the offense. So we'll see what he can do as well. Joe and I have been talking. I was telling it up how many games I've called. And this is around number 21 or 22.
Starting point is 00:05:55 This on its face, we'll see how it ends up. They may very well be the best game that I will call. So that is something to look forward to. The Chargers as well receive votes this week to get ranked into the top 25 in D2. It's the first time.
Starting point is 00:06:18 The Chargers have been receiving votes. And the rankings, they've been ranked in, last time they were ranked was in 2018. So here we go. the Chargers special team trot out onto the field. So Hillsdale is going to receive the ball to start this game. And that's, you know what that means? That means Shea Ruddy will be standing back deep at his five-yard line with Jonathan Netsker. Very excited to see this game unfold.
Starting point is 00:06:56 And really the Chargers are undefeated at home this year. They're 4-0. But this is going to be a game. test. So I'm very excited to watch Finley University Football Club against the Chargers. So the ball
Starting point is 00:07:13 gets blown over here on the T. They're going to have to trot up and reset it. Now, folks, I don't know if you remember. I called the game with Joe earlier in the air, so we're both from Nebraska, which means Nebraska football might be a topic, although quite sad right now, and they're
Starting point is 00:07:28 5-1 after an unfortunate loss last week. We'll get into that. So we're underway here at Frank Moneywater Stadium, fielded by Ruddy at the goal line, running left. He's got a crease. He makes a cut at the 30. Hit down at the 34-yard line. What a good start for the senior from Temperance, Michigan. Ted, I wonder when these teams are going to learn they should probably not kick the ball to Shea Ruddy. I am familiar with the Ruddy's. I live with Ryan. Shea lives down the hall and the special teams coordinator is always drawn up some interesting schemes to get the ball in Shea's hands, but the kicker just kicked it right to Shea on that play. So here we go. First down in 10.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Ball at the charger, 34, Boyce in the gun, Gishu 2 is right. Boyce, play action, rolling right, throws. He's got Ruddy at the 50 and ball falls incomplete in and out of the hands of Ruddy. so it'll set up a second down in 10. Uncharacteristic drop there from the senior. It's not something you see very often out of Shay Reddy. So we'll see what Boyce can do as well. Just a true dual threat quarterback for this charger offense.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Second down in 10. He'll still at their own 34. Boyce in the gun, Gishu to his right. It's a give to Gishu up the middle and he's going to get nothing. Third down and long. Balls spotted now. Still at the line of scrimmage at the 34. These are those positions I was talking about,
Starting point is 00:09:07 Ted, where Hillsdale does not want to get themselves in obvious passing downs. Watch for Jones here coming off the edge. Not a very big guy, but he's quick. He gets around the edge. So we'll see how that charger offensive line fares on this third down and long. Third down in 10, to be exact. Chargers, set their own 34, voicing the gun. Gishu 2 is right.
Starting point is 00:09:27 right. Ruddy to the far side. Terrico also out there with him. Boy, steps up in the pocket. He's going to try to run for it. And gets hit down at the 40-yard line. That's going to bring up fourth down in about three. Make it four rather. And it looks like the Chargers might have to punt.
Starting point is 00:09:45 And they will frame out on the opening drive of the game. You don't see that often here at Frank Muddywater Stadium. Most of these defenses are really solid. And I'm expecting a pretty low-scoring game here. So Dylan, Didario, to punt this one away, Ian Woodyard is not the punter right now. Dadario is standing at his own 26, Cameron Wright, waiting at his own 20. It's a low punt from Didario. It's going to bounce at the 27 and then trickle down into Finley Territory at the 16-yard line.
Starting point is 00:10:24 So here we go. We will have our first look at change. Harrison, a 6-2-201-pound senior leading this Finley offense. He's a transfer from Ball State, so that's a Division I program. So we'll see how he does on his first possession of the game. 13-22 left in the first quarter. First down and 10 for Finley. That's their own 16.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Harrison and the gun. Davis, two is right. One receiver to the far side, two to the near. Harrison, give to Davis up the middle. He's hit the line of scrimmage by Evan Viennick, Colin Morrow in on the tackle as well. Really nice job there from that charger secondary. One of the best tackling secondaries in all of D2. Ted, for everything, all the credit we gave this Finley defense.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Hillsdale has a great defense in their own, only giving up 12 points per game to Finley's 11, so they're not far behind. Second down in 11, Harrison in the gun. He's going to step up in the pocket, flip it out to Harrison in the flat. Harrison to the 20. And he's going to get near a first down. Nope, he's going to get out to the 25. Third down and one at the Euler 25. So a big third down in short for this charger defense to hold Finley to a three and out.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And this charger crowd is getting into it, folks. We'll see if the chargers can get a stop. Harrison in the gun, Davis to his right. Motion from the tight end from left to right. Third down and one. Harrison, back to pass. Looking for Davis in the flat. And he's tackled.
Starting point is 00:12:11 Short of the first down by Jonah Jensen. And it's going to be a freeing out for this boiler offense. Great pursuit of the ball carrier out of Jensen. One-on-one in the flat. It's a hard matchup to win, and he does a great job getting that tackle. and the Air Force Academy transfer does well on that play. And both defenses so far, holding strong. Ruddy back deep to receive this punt, standing his own 30.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Owen Clevenger standing at his own 8 to punt this one away. It's a great punt, and Ruddy might have some space. Fielded at the 28, makes one man miss and then runs backward, stays on his feet. He's going to lose a couple on the play. So second drive of the game. We'll see what Eli Boyce and company draw up. You'd like to see him try to get that run game going. Of course, with Eli Boyce, I think he brings a true dual threat running ability.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Also, Colin McCurnan as well as prolific runner, but Boyce is considered a really true dual threat. So we'll see if they get some RPO's in on this drive. or if they're going to give it to Ingeshoe. First down in 10, Chargers at their own 26. It's a give to Ingeishu up the middle, and he's going to get about two. That'll bring up a second down and seven. This oil and defensive line is very disciplined in there. To fill their gaps well, they don't let anything get past them.
Starting point is 00:13:53 This is going to be a great matchup in the trenches today. Second down in eight. Chargers at their own. 28. Boyce in the gun, he shoot to his right. Ruddy and Kinesni to the near side. Carrico to the far. Boyce, back to pass. Looking towards Kinesny, he's going to move up in the pocket. He's to the 30.
Starting point is 00:14:11 He's to the 40. He's past midfield with a burst of steam into Euler territory all the way down to the Finley, 38. And that's that dual threat running ability there from the sophomore quarterback from Holland. If Finley's going to sit back and they're going to play coverage and not spy the quarterback, It could be a long day for them with the legs that Boyce has. Just escaped the pass rush and there's nobody in front of them. Before the game, I was down on the field. Just watching the boys warm up.
Starting point is 00:14:43 And I looked rather short in comparison to Eli Boyce in uniform. He just galloped on that play. First down in 10, Chargers at the Oiler 38. Boyce is going to give it to Ineshoe running right. And Gishu gets out to the 35-yard line. So a little positive run on that first down will bring up another second in seven. 9.42 left in the first quarter. Hillsdale, nothing. Finley nothing. Chargers huddling it. The oil are 40. Now they break the huddle.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Voice in the gun. Hayward to his right. Stand to the far side. Rudd to the near. Now Ruddy motions from left to right to give to Ruddy and he cuts it up the field. And he gets down to the 32. A gain of four will make it third down. And five. Looks like that big run out of boys really did a great job setting up what they want to do here. Stay ahead of the chains, ground and pound. Just keep the ball moving.
Starting point is 00:15:50 He'll still taking their time. Kind of eating up some of that clock, wearing down. this defensive line of Finley. And now they break the huddle. Third down and four. Chargers at the Oiler 32. Boyce in the gun. Hayward to his left.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Boyce is going to throw. And he's got Carico for our first down to the 25. Carricle leans forward to the 23. And that's a big third down conversion there for this charger offense. And that little five-yard out route was something they ran a lot last week against Walsh. It was consistently open. These receivers do a great job of making the DB think you're going deep and just breaking outside. Nice job here from the Hillsdale Faithful.
Starting point is 00:16:34 It's very quiet in the stadium right now when the offense has the ball. Reminds me of the Nebraska crowd last week against Indiana. It did not help when it mattered most. First down in 10, Chargers at the Finley 23 Boyce in the gun. He's looking for a stand on the far side. Another good gain on first down. Nice pitch and catch there. And there it is again. That same little five-yard out route.
Starting point is 00:17:01 These D-Bs are giving a lot of cushion to the Hillsdale receivers and they'll take that gain all day. So second down in two. Chargers at the Finley 15. So they're in the red zone. 737 left and counting in the first quarter. Hillsdale nothing. Finley nothing. This is a really good drive so far.
Starting point is 00:17:23 We'll see if the charges can cash in points. Boyce in the gun, Gishu to his left, Ruddy and Carrico to the near side. Boyce is going to throw out to Caracro. Great block from Ruddy. And Carrico gets inside the 10-yard line down to the 9. And that play happened because of Shea Ruddy's block on the near side. Jace Henry, the defensive back for Finley, did not see him coming at all. And Shea Ruddy just sends him to the ground.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Great block sets up first in. goal here. First in goal at the Finley 9. Now they break the huddle. Ruddy and scorer to the far side. Davis in at tight end. Boyce in the gunning Heshoe 2 is right. Now Ruddy motions in.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Boyce back to pass. Looking for Ruddy. He throws and it's incomplete. Ruddy diving for the pass that was thrown out in front of him. Nearly came down with a one-handed grab. Second down in goal.
Starting point is 00:18:23 And that incompletion will stop the clock. 638 left in the first quarter. Skura checks out. Kerrico checks in. Second down and goal from the Oiler 9. Chargers looking for points. They'd love a touchdown early in the game. Boyce in the gun and Gishu to his right, Metzker and Kariko to the far side.
Starting point is 00:18:49 Boyce is going to run it all the way and dances down to the five. And it will be a third down-end goal from the Finley five. My quarterback draw last week was a play. That boy scored on twice and had several big runs. So look for Hillsdale to pull that out when they need it most. But it's probably something that I'm sure Finley's been preparing for. We'll see what Coach Otterbine draws up here. If this is two plays run twice for five, throw.
Starting point is 00:19:25 I really think these RPOs are working well for the Chargers. Boyce in the gun on this third down in five. He's looking towards Kinesne, and throws it for Ruddy at the back of the end zone, but it falls incomplete. Now fourth down in five. And it looks like they'll kick. And Chargers are going to kick.
Starting point is 00:19:45 So we'll see if Dylan Didario from the 13-yard line. Can make it a 3-0-0 game. 23-yard attempt for the sophomore. Skir to hold, lichens to snap. Good snap, good hold. The kick is up. And it's good. Hillsdale, 3. Finley, nothing.

Starting point is 00:21:13 That's your Grammar Minute. Visit thegrammer Minute.com for more tips and tricks. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe Van Cat. And Finley is going to come out onto the field to start. their second possession of the game. Hillsdale leads their GMAC rival 3 to nothing with 544 left in the first quarter. So that charger defense stopped the prolific oiler offense in their own territory.
Starting point is 00:21:53 So we'll see how the defense fares on the Finley second possession of the game. Chase Harrison in the gun. Davis to his right. Three receivers to the far side. First down in 10 at the Finley, 27. And Davis spins out to the 33. So really positive run there on first down. Big hole on the right side of that offensive line there.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Second down and four. Finley at their own 33. Harrison in the gun. Davis, two is left. Hard count here from the Oilers. And now Harrison looks towards the sideline and gets a new play. Two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Harrison back to pass, looking to his left, throws caught.
Starting point is 00:22:49 And that's a first down out to the 40-yard line. Harrison stood back there in the pocket, had all day to throw that ball. This offensive line is not letting Hillsdale's defensive line do what they want to do. This will be a matchup to watch on both sides. the ball in the trenches, I guess. First down in 10 for Finley. They're at their own 40. Harrison and the gun, Davis to his left.
Starting point is 00:23:12 One receiver to the near side. Two to the far. Harrison back to pass. He's going to step up in the pocket. Now move to his right. Throws and it's caught along the sideline. And that's enough to make it a second down and short, but a nice job there from the big tight end to keep both feet in bounds.
Starting point is 00:23:34 count in the NFL as well. So with a second down in three, Finley are near Charger territory. Harrison in the gun, Davis in the back, filled with him. Three receivers to the far side, one to the near. Play action, Harrison, back to pass. Looking downfield, no, he's going to flip it
Starting point is 00:23:56 to Davis on a checkdown, and Davis is going to spin in to charge her territory down to the 38. and it's just in a blink of an eye Finley's in Charger territory and this is what Finley does they're going to wear you down
Starting point is 00:24:11 they're not had a ton of big plays on the year but they're very consistent they'll pick up five, ten yards at a time and just march down the field on you. Really great decision making there from Harrison first down in 10 for Finley at the Charger 38 Harrison the gun Davis to his left
Starting point is 00:24:29 motion from Williams from left to right Harrison, give to Davis up the middle, and he's tackled by Evan Biennick at the 35-yard line. And boy, oh, boy, we're almost done with the first quarter. And now Finley's going quick. First down and, no, second down in seven, rather. Harrison, in the gun, empty set. Ball spotted at the charger, 35. And now they're going to shift formations.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Man, so far, a lot of tricks from this oil or offense, hard counts and formation changes before the snap. So on this second down in seven, we'll see what Finley does. Harrison, he's going to throw it looking for right out along the sideline. That's enough for a first down out to the Charger 26. Giving Hillsdale taste to their own medicine with these little quick outs. And that's enough for a first down. Shenevy or Nix or Davis are playing so far off the ball because they don't want to get beat over the top. You can really die by these paper cuts of four, five, six, seven yard throws.
Starting point is 00:25:44 First down in 10 for Finley. They're at the charger of 26. And now another out. A nice throw, nice grab. And Finley's down to the 18-yard line. Chenevee's given seven, eight yards a cushion on every play to that receiver on the far side. and they're going to take those yards all day long. That's Nash Biglin, 6-3-205-pound Jr.
Starting point is 00:26:13 with two straight catches. So we'll see if Biglin can take advantage of the soft coverage again. Second down in two, Finley, at the Charger 18. And it's a throw out to Davis in the flat, and he's tackled by Jacob Vance, but not after a first down to the 12-yard line. not a lot of complications on this oiler offensive scheme so far
Starting point is 00:26:38 it's been really just take what you're given and they're all the way down to the Charger 12 so the defense here for Hillsdale is going to have to stand strong Hillsdale 3 Finley nothing first down at 10 for Finley at the Charger 12 motion from Biglin and now it's going to be a jet sweep to Biglin or that's Cameron Wright, rather, and right gets inside the 10-yard line down to the eight,
Starting point is 00:27:08 to the seven, rather. Second down at seven. Finley, at the charger nine, 41, 40, 39 seconds left in the first quarter. Really taking their time here, make sure they get the right call in. they don't want to settle for three like Hillsdale did. Harrison in the gun, Davis in the backfield with him, right in digging to the far side. To give the Davis up the middle, and he's going to burst down to the six-yard line. And it looks like we have an injured charger on the field.
Starting point is 00:27:59 And now Finley's going to have a chance to really think about what they want to draw up. up here on this third down in four. Finley at the Charger 6 with 10 seconds left in the first quarter. So I would imagine it's two runs. Christian Davis, their star running back, has been running really well on this drive. And at the end of the first quarter, ladies gentlemen, it's Tuesday down three. Findlay is zero. And that's the end of the first quarter.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Hillsdale leads Finley 3 to nothing. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio for Hillsdale 101.7. Yo, fortune cookie. Starting point is 00:29:32 profoundly mundane advice? Give your fortune cookie a break and tune in to WRFH Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. The future is here. Moneywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferner, alongside me's Joe Van Cat. This is a big third down, folks, for this midly offense.
Starting point is 00:30:02 Third down and four at the Charger 6th to start the second quarter. And this crowd's getting into it now. So here we go. Chase Harrison, in the gun, Davis to his left, three receivers to the near side, and under the far. Blitz shown from Panola. Harrison, back to pass, throws, and it's caught.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Touchdown. Finley University. A touchdown grab is by Denny Furlong, and Finley, with the first touchdown of the game to take a six-three lead over Hillsdale. Hillsdale.
Starting point is 00:30:48 He was after the quarterback with six or seven guys and completely unaffected. That offensive line did a great job holding their ground. Wide open receiver over the middle of the field. So bars on to kick the extra point, and it's up and good. Finley, 7, Hillsdale 3. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale.
Starting point is 00:31:12 The Hillsdale pounded athletic government would like to send thanks to the restaurant for providing food for Cressbox personnel today. throughout the season. Comonius is located in the 256 Carlton Road in the Pargo Plaza and is the perfect spot for your three game of Post-Gameeal. Thank you, Comboni.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Thank you. Brought to by Monson, Lake. Boxman in cold water. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe Van Van Cat.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Finley leads Hillsdale 7 to 3, 1457 left in the second quarter. Shout out to Mother Nature. It is a perfect day for some college football in South Central Michigan. Last week I would term it hell week 1.0 with all these midterms I've had. So it's nice to do something a little different on this afternoon. And GMAC football is the solution. So here we go. The ball's kicked off at the 15. Ruddy running left. He's got some good boxes to the 30.
Starting point is 00:32:22 35, 40. 45, 50. Jay Ruddy's gone, folks. Dr. Orne would be proud of that one. Touchdown, charges. And there was not a Finley Oiler that touched him, Ted. He ran right past everybody, short kickoff fielded about the 20, and he was gone. And just like that. Shea Ruddy is the best football player in Division 2. Absolutely dusted the entire Finley special teams. Wowsers took us the whole first quarter to get three points and in the past nine seconds of the second quarter, we've had two touchdowns, Ted. How about that?
Starting point is 00:33:17 So Dylan Dadario on to kick the extra points. A bad snap by Likens, but Didario does well. Spurra, nice job there to pick up the ball and hold it. And Hillsdale takes a 10-7 lead over Finley. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Fox on football. I'm Frank Lanza. We kick things off on Sunday in London with the Texans,
Starting point is 00:33:47 battling the Jaguars. Other early games, the Panthers are in Philadelphia against the Eagles. The Ravens travel to Cleveland to play the Browns. The Bears hit the road to play the Falcons in Atlanta. The Giants host the New Orleans Saints in New Jersey, while the Jets are on the road in New England against Drake May and the Patriots. Aaron Rogers and the Steelers had to Tampa to play the Bucks. The Titans are on the road in Indy against the Colts.
Starting point is 00:34:11 In the late games, the Cardinals are in L.A. against the Rams. Josh Allen and the Bills visit the Raiders in Vegas. and the chargers are on the road in Kansas City against the undefeated chiefs. Sunday night the Cowboys head to Lambo to face the Packers, and we wrap up week six of the NFL season with Monday night football the commanders in San Francisco against the undefeated 49ers. Frank Lanza, Fox News. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College.
Starting point is 00:34:43 I'm Ted Ferringer alongside Nees Joe Van Cat. Hillsdale leads Finley 10 to 7 just moments ago. Shea Ruddy with a kickoff return, you would think teams would not kick it to the best special teams player in all of D2, but I guess I am mistaken. So with 1446 left in the second quarter, we have a penalty marker on the kickoff return from Finley at the 15. And it's going to go against Finley and hurt their field position a bit. See if the charges can take advantage of this field position and stop the Oilers from marching down the field like they did last time. First down in 10. Finley at their own 15.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Harrison and the gun, Davis in the backfield with them. Three receivers to the nearest side. It's a give to Davis up the middle and Davis with a burst of steam. and Jonah Jensen with a touchdown saving tackle at the 32-yard line. It was nothing but green grass in front of him. If Jensen does not make that tackle, gets him by the shoe strings. The ball state transfer nearly broke it for about 80 yards. We would have had a kickoff return for a touchdown and then an 80-yard rushing touchdown in back-to-back plays.
Starting point is 00:36:16 I knew this game was going to be insane. First down in 10 for Finley. They're at their own 27. Harrison in the gun, Davis to his right. Panola is showing blitz. And Ponole is going to blitz. And he's going to bring Davis down at the 27-yard line. And the junior from Seansville, Indiana says, no, sir.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Great play by Pinalas. It starts right past the pulling guard. Sneaks in there to get that tackle, stop him from gaining any yards. Second down in 10. at the own 27 Harrison play action he's going to move in the pocket and now he's brought down all the way back to the 24 yard line and these charger defensive backs are started playing much tighter there's nothing open on that play that's a coverage sack Drake badger excellent job there of keeping contain on the dual threat quarterback
Starting point is 00:37:13 third down and 13 Finley at their own 24 trying to ruin the momentum that's been brewing since that kickoff return from Ruddy. It's empty set. Three receivers to the near side, two to the far. Harrison in the gun. Panola showing blitz again. And Pernola's going to blitz. Harrison gets it out fast, but it's incomplete.
Starting point is 00:37:43 It was a screen pass set up for Furlong, but Harrison had no. time there and it's going to be a punt for Finley. And now we have an illegal formation and that gets all sorted out. So Hillsdale's going to get the ball back here. They lead Hillsdale 10 to 7.
Starting point is 00:38:08 And out shots, Shea Ruddy, to return the punt. Ruddy standing at his own 34-yard line. Hillsdale's lined up to come after the kicker on this one. Clevenger to punt this one away. He's standing at his own nine.
Starting point is 00:38:28 Hillsdale is showing like they're coming after the punt. It's a good punt, headed out of bounds, at the 36. So here comes the Hillsdale offense. They got a three-point lead over the 16th ranked Finley University Oilers trying to add to this 10 to 7 advantage. And with 1243 left in the second quarter, really the tail end of the second quarter is the money quarter in my opinion. Build a lead against a really dangerous team. They will not.
Starting point is 00:39:15 Hillsdale does not receive the ball for the second half. First down at 10 for Hillsdale. Play action. Boyce looking for Ruddy. It's caught at the 50. And Ruddy runs in to Finley Territory. At the 37-yard line. No, make that 38.
Starting point is 00:39:33 It's a great route by Ruddy. He's got two pairs of eyes following him everywhere he goes, takes him inside, breaks back out, money balled by Boyce. And that puts the Chargers right into Finley Territory. So first down in 10 for Hillsdale. at the oiler 38 boys in the gun guishu to his left Kerriko and metzger to the far side scur to the near Boyce he's going to give it to an guichu running right
Starting point is 00:40:02 and gueshoe's going to get about two on the play nice patient running from him to make something out of nothing second down and long let's go out for hell by roll for one play The helmet came off of a Finley defensive line men. Chargers huddling at the Finley 40. Now they break the huddle. Boyce in the gun, Gishu to his left.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Carrico and Metzger to the nearest side. Skir to the far. Second down in eight. Hillsdale at the Finley 36. Boyce back to pass. Looking to his right, throws it downfield. He's got Carico. Carrico with a leaping grab at the 10 down to the eight-yard line.
Starting point is 00:40:48 On his head. What a grab by Tut Caracow. Undershrone a little bit by voice. It did not matter. Carico came back, went right over the top and took it away from it. What a grab from the Owensboro native and Chargers. Chargers have a first in goal at the Finley 9. Two of my favorite players on this team, Carrico and Reddy making early impacts.
Starting point is 00:41:18 making me eat my words about a low-scoring game. Boys, in the gun. It's going to give to Ingeu up the middle, and Ingeu is going to fight along the line of scrimmage. I don't even know if he got a yard on that play. Gishu's a golf carrier. He was about two yards. So he did.
Starting point is 00:41:38 He got two yards. It'll bring up a second down in goal, Hillsdale, at the Finley 7. Only picked up two yards, but that's a strong run by Nguishu. Took five Euler defenders just to bring him down. again is hillsdale faithful doing a good job of being nice and quiet when the charger offense has the ball second down and goal hillsdale at the finley seven boys sprint out to his left looking looking throws and it's incomplete intended for carrico and from up here in the press box it looked like it was past interference but no flag on the play Third down and seven coming up. You really don't want to get held to three again if you're the Chargers here.
Starting point is 00:42:26 You'd love to build this lead. And now a third down and goal. You're exactly right, Joe. Chargers need a touchdown. They have to take advantage of these opportunities. Boyce in the gun, Gishu to his left. Trips to the far side in Metzger, Ruddy and Carico. Boyce back to pass.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Looking for Ruddy. Throws and incomplete. Nice pressure there from the front. Finley defensive line. And there you have it again. Charger's going to have to settle for three points. That's 50-year senior Carl Bidding's coming right through the middle, basically untouched, laying the boom on Boyce.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Finley defense is really holding strong here when it matters most, holding the Charger offense to two field goals into red zone trips. So, Tadario, on to attempt the 25-yard field goal, Skir to hold, lichens to snap. 10.01 left in the second quarter. Good snap, good hold. Kick is up and good. Hillsdale 13, Finley, 7.
Starting point is 00:43:34 You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. This is the Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group. Baseball legend Ted Williams said, all he wished out of life was to have his fans say he was the greatest baseball hitter who ever lived. In 1939, Williams joined the Boston Red Sox and was nicknamed the Kid, where he led the league that year with 145 runs batted in. He was named baseball's most valuable player twice, batting champion six times, and all-star player 17 times, and won the league's Triple Crown Award twice. He finished his career with a batting average of 344, 521 home runs, and an on-base average of 482, the highest of all-year. all time. Ted Williams' wish had come true.
Starting point is 00:44:32 This has been the Making of America. I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmedia group.com. On the stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College, I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe Van Cat. Dylan DeLio kicks this one away, and Davis with some space here. One man to beat, and Davis beats DeDario. 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5. Touchdown. Finley. And that's the second kickoff return of the game. Spent all that time talking about offense and defense.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Looks like special teams is going to make the difference here. And with 9-42, I'm in shock right now. I have to get a sip of water. Oh, my goodness. What a great play there. from Davis. It was set up for a return left. And right away, you could tell Finley outnumbered Hillsdale on that side of the field. And just like that, Finley leads here at Frank Moneywater Stadium. Oilers 14, Chargers 13. 942 left in the second quarter. You're listening to Charger football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale.

Before the original speakers died, concerned locals began making recordings of the language.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Thanks to these recordings, residents of the aisle who grew up speaking English learned Manx as a second language. Once they had kids, they began speaking only Manx at home, raising a small but growing new generation of native speakers. That's all for now. I'm Jonathan Taylor on The World Outside for Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Keep exploring God's fascinating world. bars kicks this one away i apologize for that long commercial because we have chaos on the field right now bars kicked it away for finley it was muffed by metzger he was looking straight into the sun so then ruddy picked it up at the 15 and started running with it wherein he lost the ball And Finley recovered.
Starting point is 00:47:36 And so they're going to have their third possession of the game be at the Charger 35. Some absolute chaos. Some special teams chaos. But a great use of the word wear in there, Ted. It is witchcraft so far. With 937 left in the second quarter, Finley's going to give it to Davis, and he gets down to the 29-yard line.
Starting point is 00:47:59 So a nice run on first. and 10. Check. It's not Davis. It's Dominic Bennett. So the backup running back, who actually just returned the kick moments ago. So second down in five. Finley, at the Charger 30.
Starting point is 00:48:21 I think it would be good for everybody to just slow down the pace a bit, right? Finley's taking their time, trying to collect themselves. And I think the Chargers would like to do that as well. Harrison in the gun. Bennett, two is right. Second down in five. It's a throwout to Bennett. And Bennett's going to get a first down to the 24 before being tackled by Morrow and Badger. That might be the craziest sequence of special teams plays I've ever witnessed in my life. Now finally we've got a chance to breathe. And these Chargers defenders are going to have
Starting point is 00:49:02 to take a page out of Finley's book with this bend don't break get down in the red zone and lock it in a little bit first time in 10 for the oilers they're at the charger 24 Harrison in the gun Davis to his left three receivers to the far side one in the near eight 12 left in the second quarter give no Harrison's going to keep and he gets hit out by shenevy at the 22 a little recap Chargers were leading 10 to 7. They got the 7 point. Well, rather, Chargers 3-0. And then a kickoff return from Ruddy made it 10 to 7.
Starting point is 00:49:42 And then after that, we might have to take a time out to actually explain what just happened. So when that happens, we will get into it. Second down in 8. Finley at the Charger 22. Harris hit in the gun. Davis to his left. Harrison back to pass. He's going to throw it for Davis and a leaping grab from him down to the Charger 8.
Starting point is 00:50:10 It's a great route by the running back Davis. Just a little wheel route out of the backfield beats Alex Lee over the top and a good ball out of Harrison. The Charger defense has not played bad at all. Really, either teams on both sides of the ball. been excellent, but the scoreboard has just been inflated by special teams. It reminds me of when Penn State upset Ohio State in the Whiteout was at 2017. It might have been earlier than that. It was all special teams.
Starting point is 00:50:41 First down on goal for Finley at the Charger 8. Play action, Harrison looking to his right. He's got an open man. He's not going to throw it. He's been weaving around trying to create something out of nothing. Jukes a man out and finally falls down at the 6. He had a tight end open. Had a man just missed him.
Starting point is 00:51:03 Overall, that's good coverage out of the defensive secondary for Hillsdale and this great discipline by the defensive line to stay in their lanes and make sure he can't break that free. Second down end goal. Finley at the Charger 6. Hillsdale needs a stop. Finley leads Hillsdale 14 to 13. Harrison and the gun.
Starting point is 00:51:25 Davis to his right. It's a gift to Davis up the middle, and he's near the goal line. And he will get down to the two. Third down and goal. Finley, at the Charger 2. This crowded Frank Moneywater Stadium's going to have to get loud for this one. It's four-yard territory for Finley, I would imagine. I would imagine so from the two.
Starting point is 00:51:53 Unless the Chargers can manage negative play here. So imagine you're running two plays. Likin checks in. Jiroki checks out. And now Finlay in a tush push formation on this third down and goal at the two. And Harrison, they're not going to get it. Harrison did not get it. It's like they'll mark him just short of the one pick up about half a yard.
Starting point is 00:52:23 a half-yard pickup, and now Finley has a choice to make. Take the points, increase the lead, or go for it. And it doesn't look like anybody's coming off the sideline. We're going for it. So head coach Tyler Johns is going to go for this one. Fourth down in goal. Finley, at the charger one. Push-bush-bush formation again.
Starting point is 00:52:50 And there's a flag on the field. as Finley is trying to push. And he did not get into the end zone. And we'll see what the line judges say. They're peeling away the pile. And I think he's short. They're going to mark him short, Ted, but there's a flag on the field. And this place is definitely quiet.
Starting point is 00:53:25 And it's an off-sides on the defense. And they're going to get half the distance to the goal and get another shot at this. And it was a goal line stand for this charger defense, but they're going to have to replay it. So here we go. Fourth down and one, Finley, 14, Hillsdale, 13. The Oilers trying to add to this one-point lead. It's the same formation. Harrison under center.
Starting point is 00:53:55 He's got fullbacks in the back to push him. and I do not think he got it. He did not get it. And there's another flash. And Koss Davis comes out with the football. And now the head umpire is conferring with other judges to see what exactly happened. What I'm going to feel is the runner will show to the touchdown, the first down hill hill. And the charges got.
Starting point is 00:54:31 to stop. What a play by that defensive line of Hillsdale. Three straight plays from the two-yard line, and they stand their ground. After the play, there's an unsportsman-like conduct penalty on Gavin Shenevney.
Starting point is 00:54:52 They're going to move half the distance to the goal. It's first down to Hillsdale from inside their own one-yard line. So now Hillsdale, I mean the football is spotted, literally as close to the co-line as possible. Boyce under center. Gishu in the backfield and Boyce is going to try to get out of the end zone. And there's another flag on the field at the two-yard line. It's like Boyce gave him a little bit of breathing room out to maybe the two.
Starting point is 00:55:29 Let's see what the flag is. What a stop by this Hillsdale defense to keep the 16th ranked Finley Oilers out of the end zone. So the score remains Finley 14, Hillsdale 13, and it looks like the flag is on Finley. So Hillsdale is going to have some breathing room here with 414 left in the second quarter. And Finley had the same penalty the Chargers did on that first fourth down. defensive linements lined up over the ball
Starting point is 00:56:04 gets an off sides call. So first down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own five-yard line. Boyce in the gunning, Gishu, two is right, Ruddy. The only receiver in the game on the near side. It's a quarterback run all the way.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Boyce is going to lean forward to the 8th. And that'll bring up a second down in short, second down in three. 337 left in counting in the second quarter. Chargers huddling at their own four trying to take some of rather trying to lower the clock here. Got ruddy in single coverage to the far side.
Starting point is 00:57:01 Boyce in the gun throws out to Skura to. the 12-yard line. Hillsdale's going to have to be careful not giving time for Finley after this possession. Get your seven points and hopefully the clock is at triple zero so you can go into half with a six-point lead. 255 left in the second quarter and counting. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at the charger 13, Boys in the Gun, Gishu to his left, Skura and ready to the far side.
Starting point is 00:57:34 It's a pitch out to Gishu running. left and he does well to get to the line of scrimmage maybe he got a yard on the play no he did not second down in 10 hillsdale still at their own 13 finley 14 hillsdale 13 to 25 left in counting in the second quarter so maybe one more play before the two minute warning carrico checks in scura checks out hillsdale doing well in managing this possession trying to get some composure and control on this chaotic first quarter, or first half, rather. Boyce in the gun. Hayward to his right.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Boyce is going to throw to Ruddy at the 15. Ruddy's immediately hit. So that will set up a third down and long with 156 left on the clock. And that's the two-minute warning. Finley 14, Hillsdale 13. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7. telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor.
Starting point is 00:58:46 Here's Jinnah Suhita. On March 9 to 12, 1966, Sergeant First Class Benny G. Adkins' camp was attacked early in the morning. Adkins manned a mortar position to defend the camp. Fighting continued until early the next morning when enemy forces launched their main attack. When all mortar rounds were expended, he used every available resource to continue his resistance. When ordered to evacuate, Adkins and a small group of soldiers dug through the back of the bunker, and fought their way out of the camp. When he learned that the last helicopter had already departed,
Starting point is 00:59:14 Adkins took charge until they were rescued two days later. During the 38-hour battle and 48 hours of escape and evasion, Adkins killed an estimated 155 enemy fighters while sustaining 18 different wounds to his body. For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Sergeant First Class Benny G. Adkins was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 00:59:39 Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on the campus Philstale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe Van Cat. Finley leads Hillsdale 14 to 13, 156 left in the first half. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, third down in eight, chargers at their own 15, boys back to pass. He's got Ruddy underneath, and Ruddy, he's going to get a first down, jukes out of man, and finally hit down. Down at the 29-yard line.
Starting point is 01:00:13 Those yards after contact were ridiculous. And if you're the Oilers, that one hurts. I don't know how you let Shea Ruddy go across the middle of the field. Just completely uncovered. And now Chargers is going to have to pick up the pace. First down in 10, Hillstale. I'm going to throw out to Kinesny to the 35, but they're going to have to get moving. 128, 127, 126 left.
Starting point is 01:00:38 in the second quarter. Boyce in the gun. And now we have some confusion with substitutions here. Okay, now they have it figured out. Carrico and Metzger to the near side. Ruddy the far. Boys in the gun, first down in 10. He's going to throw it
Starting point is 01:00:54 out to Routy at the 40, and that's enough for a first down, so it's going to stop the clock momentarily. 107 left in the second quarter. And charge Signaling in the play. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, Metzger, and Ruddy to the near side.
Starting point is 01:01:15 Boyce motions that way. Now he's going to go back and dropped at the line of scrimmage. He had room to run if necessary, but nice tackle there by the Finley defensive line. And Chargers is going to have to take a timeout with 51 seconds left in the second quarter. Some other scores from around the nation with seven seconds left in the second quarter. with seven seconds left in the second quarter. Ohio State leads Illinois, or not Illinois, Indiana, 10 to 7, as I will be dwelling on that score,
Starting point is 01:01:48 as I am a sad and conflicted and depressed Nebraska football fan. Way tough life to live being a Nebraska fan, Ted. Ten years since we've beaten the top 25 team. The Cornhuskers are traveling, out to Eugene Oregon to play against not Dylan
Starting point is 01:02:14 Ryola but another guy because Dylan did not get the starting job this week. So Joe folks said he's staying up to watch the game. It begins at 11 p.m.
Starting point is 01:02:26 Eastern time, which means it'll end about 2.30. Wild stuff. So Chargers back out on the field. Second down in 10 for them.
Starting point is 01:02:37 They're at their 40. Boyce back to pass. throws it downfield. He's got Rody wide open at the 25. Ruddy makes a move all the way down to the 12. And with 42 seconds left, that's enough for a first down inside of the red zone. But the clock is now running. 35 seconds left and counting.
Starting point is 01:03:01 They're going to have to get the play in here. Boy, Siniguan, Gisha, 2 is left. Right into the far side. Metzker and Karako to the near. He's going to run it. And he gets down inside the 10. And there's the second timeout from the Chargers. What a route on that deep post by Shea Ruddy.
Starting point is 01:03:21 Completely lost his defender, wide open over the middle of the field. The Oilers are lucky he didn't house that. Finley's secondary member who was covering Ruddy looked like he tripped at about the 45. I don't know if it was from a shoelace or Ruddy absolutely dusting him, but Shea was wide open on that play. Now with 23 seconds left, it will be a second down in five for Hillsdale at the Finley 8. Finley 14, Hillsdale 13.
Starting point is 01:04:01 This would be huge for the Chargers to take the lead before halftime. What are you drawn up on this plate, Joe? You have no more timeouts. If I'm the Chargers, I'm looking to put Shea Ruddy on one side of the field, get all the eyes on him, and then I'm throwing a fade ball to Tutt Caracow on the opposite side. Wherever Shea Ruddy is not, because that's where there's going to be less defenders. So here we go. Second down in five.
Starting point is 01:04:30 Chargers at the Finley 8. Boyce under center. Gishu in the backfield. Play action. Boyce, rolling to his right. pressure goes back to the left. Gishu in the end zone. Touchdown! It's a great play design by the Chargers offensive coordinator there. Had the whole offense going one way, taking the defense with him. And Gishu just leaks out to the left,
Starting point is 01:04:53 wide open. And with 17 seconds left in the second quarter, Hillsdale, on to attempt the extra point. They lead for. Finley 19 to 14. Didario, to kick, scurro to hold, Likens to snap. The kick is up and no good. Hillsdale 19, Finley, 14. That's two bad snaps in a row on those extra points by Likens. Something they're going to want to clean up in the second half.
Starting point is 01:05:34 And now, I'm going to say probably don't kick the ball to number four, Ted. This has been an amazing game so far. All the hype surrounding this matchup. Boy, oh boy, has this delivered in a facet of the game I was not expecting special teams. So we'll see, I would assume, Tadario will squib kick it. I would presume with 17 seconds left. but Finley still have their timeouts
Starting point is 01:06:13 Finley definitely has the firepower to move down the field with 17 seconds and three timeouts so this half is not over yet Tatario approaches the ball and it's going to be a squib to try to waste time fielded at the 25 and brought out to the 30
Starting point is 01:06:40 13 seconds left. Finley's going to receive the second half kick. So I would presume that this oiler offense is just going to run the clock out, right? But you still have timeouts. If you're the chargers, you hope so. But Finley can do it. Finley can move this ball. And it looks like they're lining up with three receivers out wide.
Starting point is 01:07:05 So I don't think they're content to just let this go to halftime. So Harrison in the gun. Bennett, two is right, three receivers to the far side. First down and 10 for Finley. At their own 30. Now Panola trots up to the line. It's a give to Bennett up the middle. And Badger with the tackle.
Starting point is 01:07:26 And that very well might do it. Dono is going to call time out. Finley called the time out. So with three. seconds left, you're at your own 36 yard line. I don't understand the rationale for the run on the previous play. Unless Harrison can get the ball to the end zone from here, I don't know what you're planning on doing. But they're going to call time out and talk it over and we'll see what happens. It would be 76 yards to the end zone.
Starting point is 01:08:10 So I guess if Chase Harrison can throw a ball that far, then maybe this is a genius play. Four seconds are left on the clock, so they added a second. We know how adding seconds goes in this area of the country. And three receivers to the far side. Harrison in the gun, Bennett to his left. Hillsdale clinging to a five-point lead. Hillsdale 19, Finley 14. Harrison is going to give it to Bennett, and Bennett's going to get out to around midfield,
Starting point is 01:08:51 and that's going to be end of the first half. Chargers, 19, Finley, 14. You're listening to Charger football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Tune in for second half action. We'll see you then. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside Me's. Joe Van Cat.
Starting point is 01:09:16 Hillsdale leads the 16th ranked Oilers of Finley University, 19 to 14. Now, I had to get out a legal pad in a pen to try to, how do I say this, decode exactly what happened in the first half. So Hillsdale came out. They got a 3-0 lead on a field goal from Tadario. Finley then marched straight down the field and scored. So Finley took a 7 to 3 lead. And then Hillsdale had a kickoff return from Shea Ruddy following that touchdown march from Finley. So he also took a 10-7 lead.
Starting point is 01:10:01 And then Hillsdale added a field goal. So the Chargers had a 13-7 advantage over the Oilers. And then all chaos broke loose because then Finley returned the ensuing kickoff to take a 14-13 lead. And then Metzger on the preceding kickoff had trouble with the sunlight. It bounced out of his hands. Ruddy picked it up, sprinted down the field about 10 yards. And then he fumbled it. So Finley had the ball at the charger 35 with a 14.
Starting point is 01:10:39 13, 13 advantage. Then the charger defense stopped three tush pushes on the goal line. And then there is a Finley penalty on sportsman-like, well, there's an unsportsman-like conduct on Chenevee. And then there was a penalty on Finley that put the chargers at about the 10-yard line where they marched down the field and scored. But then Vittario missed the extra point. So if you're taking notes, you should understand exactly what I explained. But that's how we got to the 1914 scoreline we're at right now. Is there an aspect of the game, Joe, that you've been surprised with from the first half play?
Starting point is 01:11:24 You know, special teams play was not something we were talking about coming into the game. You know, probably should have been with Shea Reddy being the best in the business. But two kickoff return touchdowns followed by a muffed kickoff return. and then that Charger defensive line, three straight plays inside the two-yard line, and the Oilers can't punch it in. And I have to put an asterisk on the, the quote-unquote goal line stand because it was third down and goal at the two, Chargers stop them.
Starting point is 01:11:59 Fourth down in goal at the two, Chargers stop them. And then a penalty, you know, marker, just the yellow goes flying into the air and you could just feel the groans from the crowd here at the stadium. Like everyone got sucker punched. And so it was another fourth down in goal. Half the distance would make it at the one. And the Charger stopped him again. So we'll see what happens this second half.
Starting point is 01:12:29 But this game has a lot of implications. Because both teams right now are 3 and 1 in the conference, and they're both tied for second. So if they want to stay in contention for a GMAC championship or co-championship, if Northwood loses the rest of the season, I think Northwood's notable upcoming matchup with the remaining schedule with the Ashland. They're at Lake Erie today at 2 p.m., which they're heavily favored in, but a lot of stuff happens.
Starting point is 01:12:59 I mean, Thomas Moore two weeks ago took down a ranked Walsh opponent. So this game, really the winner of today, solidifies themselves at the other main contender for the GMAC championship. It's a hugely important game for both sides, Ted. And they're playing like it. You can tell guys are flying around on defense. The ball is moving on offense. It's a great first half of football.
Starting point is 01:13:27 I think we're in for a treat in this second half. So Hillsdale is going to kick the ball away to Finley. So Chase Harrison and company will start this. second half, I will be very curious to see how this second half ends up. And if the Chargers win today, that goal line stand will be the moment. The crossing of the Rubicon, the we are here, we are for real. That moment right there. So that was what I took away from the.
Starting point is 01:14:07 first half, a lot of chaos, a lot of fun, a lot of yelling from up here in the press box. So by the end of the game, if it keeps going like it was in the first half, I will not have a voice by the end of the fourth quarter. Or in for a great second half, Ted. I wonder what Dr. Arnd's thinking right now. He's got to be pretty proud of his boys so far. This is going to take some character from the charge of. That's what it's all about.
Starting point is 01:14:42 So, Braden Childs, to kick this one away for Hillsdale. Bennett back deep to receive. Nope, it's going to be a bit of a pooch kick away from Bennett, fielded at the 15. And Biglins brought down at the 26-yard line. So here we go. Chase Harrison, the quarterback for this. Finley squad, who had an excellent game in the first half, honestly.
Starting point is 01:15:14 Very smart plays from him didn't really force the ball into bad situations. You could just tell he's an experienced D1 caliber quarterback to transfer from Ball State. So we'll see what he does on the first possession of the second half. First down to 10 for Finley. They're at their own 27. Harrison in the gun, Davis. No, Bennett to his left. Give to Bennett up the middle. Nice running room from him.
Starting point is 01:15:41 And that's enough for a first down out to the 37. Ed Charger defense is going to have to stop those kind of plays. Those 10 plus yard runs on first in 10. Because Finley, with their big offensive line, they're disciplined enough to just play within themselves, eat up a ton of clock, and then you blink and they have a one, two, three score advantage. and 10 for Finley. At their own
Starting point is 01:16:08 37 Harrison in the gun. Davis to his right. Harrison's going to throw up balls tipped up at the line. Nearly intercepted by Jensen, but it falls to the turf. Second down and 10. It's great pass rush on that one by Drake Badger.
Starting point is 01:16:26 Great job there from Badger. You can just tell that Hillsdale is undersized the defensive line of Hillsdale versus this offensive line of Finley. He's a mismatch, but nice job there for Badger to get his paw up. Second down in 10.
Starting point is 01:16:43 It's definitely a mismatch, and they're not creating a lot of chaos in the backfield, but they're playing very disciplined. They're holding their matchups, and they're not letting anything sneak by him. Second down at 10. Finley at their own 37, Harrison in the gun, Davis to his right, run receiver to the near side, two to the far, gives it Davis. He's running, he's running to his right, and he's hit. And it's going to go lost to one.
Starting point is 01:17:04 Colin Morrow and Luke Panoa on the play. Davis was looking for the edge, and Panola absolutely rocked him at the line of scrimmage. That captain of that defense, just a standout player. Third down in 11. Oilers, after all 36, Hillsdale leads Findlay, 19 to 14. It's a big third down here. Here, three receivers to the near side, two to the far.
Starting point is 01:17:36 Empty set. Harrison in the gun. Harrison, looking downfield, he's got a man and it's incomplete. Dropped it. What a ball by Harrison right into the basket, and the receiver just drops it. Furlong with the drop. Cost Davis came down, absolutely rocked Furlong at about the 35-yard line of Hillsdale. And now,
Starting point is 01:18:06 Finley, that's their first. So a sideline warning on Finley. It's forced down in 11. Finley at their own 36. They're going to have to pump this one away. So Ruddy will be back waiting for this punt at his own 20. Clevenger to punt this one away for the Oilers, standing at his own 20.
Starting point is 01:18:36 13, 22 left in the third quarter. Nice job there from that Charger defense to force Finley. And oh, the punty's blocked. It's going to be picked up by Scott Eaton down to the Finley 20. Zach Taylor on the block. And that was a huge prey. Ted, this one's coming back. Got a penalty marker around the 40-yard line.
Starting point is 01:19:08 I mean, we're going to get a defensive holding on the gunner. And special teams are not disappointing to start this second half. So there's a referee talking to coach Shreffler of Hillsdale. We have three reps conferring at the 25. Another ref talking to the head coach of Finley. The ball. Defense number 21. The ball will be...
Starting point is 01:19:43 Finley's going to keep the ball. They're getting 10 yards from the previous spot and an automatic first down on a defensive holding from the Hillsdale Special Teams player. The chaos continues. I cannot believe that just happened. So we had a blocked punt,
Starting point is 01:20:02 but then a gunner, was holding the bullet, correct? And that's enough for a first down for Finley. Oh my goodness. What a way to start the second half. And now the Hillsdale defense after that hard work on that stop are going to have to do it again. Man, oh man.
Starting point is 01:20:27 So first down in 10. The crowd does not like that call. first down in 10 for Finley at their own 46. Harrison and the gun. Bennett to his right, two receivers to the far side, one of the near. Play action, Harrison, back to pass. He's got good protection
Starting point is 01:20:43 and he's going to flip it to Bennett who's tackled by Panola at the 48. Did you see the hold on the previous play? Yeah, I did. Unfortunately, it was the right call. Just grabbed a hold of him, took him to the ground.
Starting point is 01:21:00 More unfortunate than anything I think. It looked like the gunner just lost his footing and accidentally brought the Finley player down with him, but it was a holding. So here we go. Second down in eight for Finley. They're at their own 48. Harrison in the gun, blitz shown from Panola. Bennett to his left, one receiver to the far side, two to the near, 1235 left, third quarter. Harrison to throw. Furlongs pushed out of bounds by Shenovie at the 45. So third down in one. Finley inside of Hillsdale territory. You've got to imagine this is four-down territory here,
Starting point is 01:21:40 especially with it only being one yard. Hillsdale leads the 16-ranked Oilers of University of Finley. 19 to 14. Finley driving, though. Harrison and the gun, Bennett to his right, two receivers to the near side, none to the far. Third down and one, Finley at the Hillsdale 45. Motion from Furlong from left to right.
Starting point is 01:22:01 Now he goes back to the right. Harrison, give. It's a give. And he's going to lose three. And Evan Bienick with a huge stop. All the way back to the 47. And now Finley's going to have to pump the ball away. What a play from Bienic.
Starting point is 01:22:23 To take this from fourth down and one potentially going for it on fourth, he breaks through that line and makes it a fourth down. and four. The ball never lies, Joe, ever. So Ruddy's back deep, waiting for this punt at his own 10. Clevenger to punt at his 38. They might go after this punt. No, they do not. It's a nice punt. Ruddy sprints away from the ball, and it nearly was down at the one. So after all that chaos, Chargers are going to start their first possession of the second half at their own 25. Wow, what a four minute. The first four minutes of his third quarter have been insane.
Starting point is 01:23:18 Picking up right where we left off in that first half. Special teams, special teams, special teams. We'll see if the charger offense can. still some control back into this game. Jet sweep to ruddy on first down in 10 and he gets out to the 21. Did a nice job to beat a man on that play, but it's only a one-yard gain, so second down in nine.
Starting point is 01:23:54 Hillsdale at their own 21, 1037 left in the third quarter. Chargers 19, Oilers 14. Boyce in the gun, Gishu to his left. Carrico to the near side, running to far. Boyce, back to pass. It's a slant, caught by Carico. He bounces off a couple of tacklers and gets out to the 31-yard line. That's enough for a first down.
Starting point is 01:24:22 There's a good ball from Boyce on that quick slam from Carrico. These Finley defenders are still given a decent amount of cushion to the receivers. line first and ten for hillsdown first down and ten that's a really nice job there from boys as you mentioned great catch from carico boyce in the gun gueshoe to his right it's one-on-one with reddy on the outside motion from carico from left to right boys looking that way but he's going to throw to carrico carrico with a nice move in the 35 that's enough for a first down the past two plays have all been the owensboro native Nice job from Tut. He needs a sub.
Starting point is 01:25:07 Ted Tut is getting wide open on these plays because if you watch Shay Ruddy move across the field, he's got a safety covering him over the top and a DB lined up on him at the line of scrimmage. They're taking two defenders with him wherever he goes. So the Chargers now taking their time. First down in 10, four Hillsdale, at their own 42. Wildcat formation. Ruddy in at quarterback.
Starting point is 01:25:30 Ruddy's going to run to his. left looking for some blocks and hit down. And it looks like he's going to lose three yards on the play. Chargers is having a really tough time running outside the tackles. Much of the run game has been shut down by this Finley defense and now mass substitutions on a second down in 13. 835 left third quarter. This run defense is the strength of Finley's defensive front.
Starting point is 01:26:04 So this is what we expected, but Hillsdale's doing a great job countering it with the pass. Voice in the gun looking towards Metzger. Now he sacked all the way back to the 28, and it looks like he was roughed up on the play as well. And that is not good news for Hillsdale. A really awkward tackle there. So it looks like McCurnan might come in at quarterback. Great news, though, for Hillsdale is that the backup is a very experienced guy, splitting time with boys throughout much of the year.
Starting point is 01:26:46 It'll be a third down in really long. Third down in 20. Hillsdale at their own 32. 816 left. It's good to see boys walking off the first. field under his own power. Hopefully this is something he's able to shake off and come back in, but looks like he got
Starting point is 01:27:04 his shoulder a little bit. So we hope he's okay. Just absolute, amazing quarterback for this Charger team. McKearnan now in at quarterback.
Starting point is 01:27:20 Third down in 20. McCurton in the gun, Gishu, two is right, two receivers here one in the air. McCurnan throws it out to Ruddy. Good block from Carico. Ruddy makes one man miss and gets out to the 37. And now the chargers are going to have to punt this one away.
Starting point is 01:27:40 And the momentum that they got from that stop. And the two first downs from those Carico catches are going to be pretty much a race. So no points in that venture. And now we've got Bennett back deep. to receive this punt. Now Ian Woodyard's back out on the field. The punt this one away for the Chargers, standing at his own 23.
Starting point is 01:28:03 Hillsdale 19, Finley 14. It's a low punt from Woodyard. It will be fielded by right, and he's immediately hit all the way back to the 26. It's great coverage by Hillsdale on that punt, low driving punt. Way to flip to field by the Chargers special teams. So the ball will be spotted at the 21.
Starting point is 01:28:34 And the Hillstale defense is going to have to put up another stop here. They played well on the first drive of the game. We'll see. We have a new quarterback in the game as well for Finley. It's 5'9 sophomore Andrew Leonard out of Powell, Ohio. The Leonard in a quarterback on this first down for Finley at their own 21. Nice throw from Leonard. And that's enough for a first down all the way out to the 35 before Vance and Jensen in on the tackle.
Starting point is 01:29:13 What a nice throw for Leonard on his first play of the game. We've got back-up quarterbacks on both sides of the field here. first down in 10 for finley at their own 36 Leonard in the gun davis to his left three receivers in the near side none of the far six 45 left third quarter Leonard back to pass looking to his right's going to move up in the pocket and run pinola's in pursuit gets him down at the 41 but right away Leonard is faster than chase harrison you can just tell immediately Leonard moved up in the pocket the blink of it I got a couple on that first down.
Starting point is 01:29:59 It's great coverage on the backside by the Hillsdale secondary, but it doesn't matter when you've got a quarterback who can escape like that. Picks up five yards. Second down and five for Finley. They're at their own 41 Leonard and the gun. Blitz shown from Vance. It's a give to Davis, and he gets out to the 45-yard line.
Starting point is 01:30:21 Third down and about half a yard. It seems the charge years are. the best in the business so far from what I've seen today in these short-yarded situations. Third down and one, Finley. At their own, 45, chargers clinging to a five-point lead. They lead Finley. 19 to 14. Leonard, in the gun.
Starting point is 01:30:49 Davis, two is right, three receivers to the far side. Now one, motions from left to right. Leonard's back to pass and there's a flag on the field it's going to go against Finley I believe and it is I think it was an illegal formation No it's going to be a timeout Before the snap by Finley So no penalty, it'll be third down in one still
Starting point is 01:31:17 When we come back to the field And we'll take a timeout with him Hillsdale 14 no Hillsdale 19 Finley 14. Third down and one for Finley.
Starting point is 01:32:34 They're at their own 45. George is bringing into a five-point lead. 19 to 14 over the 16th ranked Oilers. And there's a fall start. It's going to be a fall start on Finley. He's going to back him up five yards and make this third down a little more interesting. Now we finally got that flag, Ted. Thought we were getting one before the break.
Starting point is 01:32:58 Finley is staves it off at the timeout, and now false start. Going to make it third down and six. Third down and safe. Finlay, at their own 40. 524 left in the third quarter. See, here we go. Leonard, still in the game of quarterback for Finley. Two receivers to the far side, two to the air. The plane clocks down to two, down to one.
Starting point is 01:33:30 They finally get the snap off and it's a give. No, it's not. Leonard kept the ball, but he stopped in the backfield anyway. Drake Badger, Evan Beannick, causing absolute havoc in the backfield for this oiler offense, and they're going to have to punt this one away. It was miscommunication all over that fifth. backfield. I don't think any of them knew the plate call, didn't know the assignments, and the Chargers had six men in that backfield. Clevenger to punt this one away for Finley. Ruddy waiting
Starting point is 01:34:07 for the punt at his own 19. Nearly blocked again by Tetler, Farrakot by Ruddy at the 23. So we'll see who comes in at quarterback. And it will be McCurton. 439 left in the third quarter. Hillsdale trying to add to a five-point lead over the 16th ranked Oilers of University of Finley. Hillsdale 19, Finley 14. McCarrenan in the gun and Gishute to his left. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own 23.
Starting point is 01:34:49 Scura and Carrico to the far side. McCurnan's going to run it up the middle. He has some room, and he gets out to the 30, no, make that the 33 yard line. It's enough for a first down. And McCurton's picking up right where Eli Boyce left off. And that's a first down for Hillsdale. Chargers have to have one of the deepest quarterback rooms in all the GMAC. I mean, you can subs in a guy who has as much playing experience as McCurnan.
Starting point is 01:35:24 You're doing something right. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own, 33. Pass over the middle. Intended for Carrico falls incomplete. Second down in 10. The one thing McCurton doesn't have that voice had was that composure in the pocket. Just getting a little rushed there in that play and sailing the ball right past the open receiver. Second down in 10.
Starting point is 01:35:50 McCurnan in the gunning, Gishu to his right, Karakow and Skir to the far side, right to the near. Give to Gishu running left, and he'll get up to the 37-yard line. Third down. If the chargers can get a touchdown on this possession, it would put a lot of pressure on Finley. Third down and six. Chargers. Looking to add to this five-point lead. McCurner in the gun. Gishu to his right, go to the near side. Carrick-going, ready to the far.
Starting point is 01:36:31 McCurner throws out to Gishu in the flat. Gishu's going to have to make up some room, but he goes nowhere. He's not going to get there. And we have some tussling here between Kinesny and a defensive back of Finley, but there's no flags. And now, Chargers are going to have to. to punt this one away. So Ian Woodyard trots on for Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:36:55 Here's that defensive battle I was looking for in the first half, Ted. They slowed down quite a bit here in this third quarter. And the third quarter is nearly complete. We have two 50 left in the third period. Woodyard standing at his own 23 to punt this one away, right back deep to receive the punt. And a decent punt. from Woodyard and Finley's going to have field position starting at the 21-yard line.
Starting point is 01:37:28 So 2.37 left in the third quarter. We might have to cook up some scores from around the nation. Ohio State 13, Indiana 7. LSU 31, Mississippi State, nothing. And, oh, man. Florida, 2010. Texas 17. I do like the University of Florida.
Starting point is 01:37:55 And they are, they had an interesting October if I do say it myself. The first two weeks anyway. To give to Bennett, running to the left, and he gets out across the 25. We do have an injured Finley offensive lineman on the field. So they will tend to him. Have you ever seen a team like Florida go?
Starting point is 01:38:18 Completely dominated. Ole Miss. Complete domination, skyrocketed in the rankings in the top 15. No, top 10, I think. And then an absolute thrashing at Missouri. And then a loss to South Carolina. So four and two record. The first four were good.
Starting point is 01:38:39 The losses were horrible. It's kind of an interesting way to play. Win big, win unbelievably, and then lose horribly. Sweet. Kind of like how Nebraska does it. Lose close. Except Nebraska does not win big, ever. Especially not big games. But tonight is a big game, folks. Tonight is a big game. Unfortunately not playing Dylan Raola, the former Nebraska quarterback who transferred to Oregon. But they'll be going up against a reeling Oregon team,
Starting point is 01:39:14 injury ridden this is their this is going to be their chance to prove that they can hang with the big dogs in the big tent Nebraska's going to the college football playoff this year Joe I've heard that too I spoke it into existence
Starting point is 01:39:29 and it looks like Chase Harrison is coming back into the game for Finley he's starting in the back field with Dominic Bennett at running back second down and four for Finley at their own 27 Harrison in the gun Bennett to his last Two receivers in hereside, one of the far.
Starting point is 01:39:47 Harrison back to pass. Throws across the middle to Bennett. That's enough for a first down out to the 34. I wonder what the rationale was to put a new quarterback in the game for that last possession. My guess is just give the chargers a different look and see if it pays off and when it clearly didn't. Play action for Finley and Harrison snacked in the backfield rather. by Drake Badger. That's that new left tackle that just came into the game for the injured oiler,
Starting point is 01:40:24 and Badger wasted no time going right at him. Sets up a second down and 17 for the Oilers. Finley at their own 27. They're trailing Hillsdale, 14 to 19. Enties set, Harrison to the gun, two receivers in the far side, three to the knee. year. One 23 left. Third quarter, Harrison, back to pass, looking to his right, moves up in the pocket.
Starting point is 01:40:49 And he's sacked by Bionic. At the 25-yard line. Two sacks in a row for this Hillsdale defensive line. And I think they're making Ted Ferringer eat his words when I said they were undersized a quarter ago. Two big plays from this Hillsdale defense. sets up a third down and a country mile.
Starting point is 01:41:17 They can really pin their ears back and go after it now. Turn down in 19. Finley at their own, 25, 42 seconds left in counting in the third quarter. Vance and Panola is showing blitz. Now Vance moves off. Harrison in the gun. Bennett to his right.
Starting point is 01:41:37 Now we're going to get a delay in game. And this charger crowd is playing a role in this G-MAC showdown will make it a third down in two country miles. Third down in 24. That's right.
Starting point is 01:42:00 Harrison in the gun. Bennett, two is right, two receivers and earside, one to the far. Coming after him here. Vance moves off, Bennett. Erdo Harrison, back to pass. He's going to pass it out to Bennett. And he's hit at the 34 by Jensen, and that'll be the final play of the third quarter.
Starting point is 01:42:22 So Finley's going to have to punt that one away. Hillsdale looking for their first win against Finley since 2021. Could this be the day? You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. This is The Making of America from the Jefferson Media. Group. On August 18th, 1920, a woman's right to vote became constitutional law, but the battle for those rights actually began back in 1878 when Aaron Sargent, a California Republican senator, first proposed the legislation. In 1920, 36 states were needed to ratify the legislation,
Starting point is 01:43:09 but the battle for confirmation proved to be long and bitter with Southern Democrats blocking passage whenever and wherever possible. With time running out, Tennessee became the 36th state to grant women's suffrage, and in doing so, it became the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This has been the Making of America. I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Joe Van Kett.
Starting point is 01:43:44 Finley to pump this one away. Shea Ruddy back deep to receive at his own 22. Chargers lead the 16th ranked Oilers 19 to 14 at the start of this fourth quarter. We'll see if the charges go after the block. They do not. It's a decent punt fielded by Ruddy at the 25. So he's going to have the ability to run this one back. He's to the 30, 35, 40.
Starting point is 01:44:10 And there'll be great field position for Hills. to start this fourth quarter. It looked like they had ready dead to rights, three men on him, and he just manages to escape and turn that into a gain of about 12. Field position will play a big role. As this game winds down, Chargers looking for those points, that touchdown to go up by two scores. First down in 10 for Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:44:43 They're at their own 45. McCurnan and the gun, Gishu to his right, Metzger and Carico to the near side. McCurnan throws it out to Carico. Carico gets past one man and out to the 47. If you're Hillsdale, the clock is your friend. You're in no hurry here. Take all of the 35 to 40 seconds on the play clock. between every play.
Starting point is 01:45:16 Second down and eight. Chargers at their own 47. Hillsdale, 19, Finley, 14. It's a wildcat look. Ruddy in at quarterback. Hayward to his left. It's a pitch to Carrico running to the right. And he's going to get out to midfield.
Starting point is 01:45:36 Boy, oh, boy, did that play have potential for a second? I thought, oh, my goodness. If he could have got the edge there, He had nothing but green grass in front of him, but good job by the defensive back from Finley, setting that edge enforcing him back inside. Third down and five. This is a big third down for Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:45:54 They're at midfield. McCurran in the gun, Gishu to his left, three receivers in the near side. Carico, Ruddy and Scura. McCurton, back to pass. Looking, looking throws. He's looking, well, pass intended for Carrico.
Starting point is 01:46:16 and the sideline referee declares the ball on catch-a-ball. They'll look like pass interference either way. So chargers are going to have to bump this one away. So the offense is still looking for that definitive touchdown to make it a two-possession game. Finley is one play away from taking the lead in a half where Hillsdale, quite frankly, has outplayed them in every facet of the game. Ian Woodyer to punt this one away, right back deep to receive, and he'll field it at his own eight. And he's immediately hit at the seven-yard line.
Starting point is 01:47:00 He might have been better off letting that one bounce into the end zone. They're going to start this drive inside their own 10-yard line. Carrico on the tackle, the kid can do it all. So here we go. the fourth quarter Finley offense will see what they have in store. And we had no points in that third quarter. It's a far cry from that second quarter. We had points in chaos on every single possession.
Starting point is 01:47:35 So Harrison in the gun, Bennett to his left, two receivers to the far side, one of the near. First down and ten for Finley at their own eight. 13, 12 left, fourth quarter. Harrison gives to Bennett running right. Bennett gets past two guys before getting out to the 21. Man, has he had a good game. Bennett, he has a kickoff return, and every time he touches the ball in the backfield, it seems like it's 8 to 10 yards.
Starting point is 01:48:03 He's gotten a lot of help from this offensive line. They've struggled to protect the quarterback, but in run-blocking sets, they've created great holes and pushed this Hillsdale defensive line backwards. Second down in two, Finley, at their own 16. It's going to be a pitch out to the tied end, and enough for a first down to the 24 before being tackled by Davis and Mora. And that will be enough for a first down. 12-20 left, fourth quarter. Hillsdale 19, Finley, 14. Harrison.
Starting point is 01:48:47 and looking towards the sideline to get the play for this Finley offense. Now he's got it. Harrison in the gun, Bennett to his right, three receivers to the far side of this first down in 10 at the Finley. 24. Give to Bennett up the middle. And another 10-plus yard run, Bennett all the way out to the 37, and that's enough for a first down. This Finley rushing attack is just gashing the charges right up the middle. You need better gap discipline by these interior. defensive lineman. Now Finley's taking their time. Harrison in the gun, Bennett to his right, right to the nearest side.
Starting point is 01:49:29 Two receivers to the far. First down and 10 for Finley. They're at the Oiler 37. Give to Bennett up the middle and he's got more running room. So it looks like this Finley offensive line is getting a lot of good push up in the trenches, dominating on this possession. It'll be a second down in five at the Finley 42. So this Hillsdale defense will have to try to bend but not break late fourth.
Starting point is 01:50:04 Harrison, in the gun. Davis back in the game, running back. One receiver to the far side, two to the near. To give the Davis up the middle. And he's tackled by Panola at the 46-yard line. And it seems like this is the secret sauce for this Hillsdale deep. defense. It's third down and one. A lot of success on third and short here in this second half.
Starting point is 01:50:28 Let's see if they can do it again. We will see if Charger defense dials up the blitz. Third down and one. At the Finley, 46. Harrison in the gun, Davis, two his left. One receiver to the far side, two to the near. Moro showing blitz. Now he backs off.
Starting point is 01:50:49 It's a give note. Harrison's going to keep. running along the sideline. He loses the ball. And it's recovered by a Finley receiver. And could it possibly be enough for a first down? O'Brien with the tackle that caused Harrison to lose the ball as he was sprinting to his left. And then a receiver for Finley picked a ball up, but was it enough for a first down?
Starting point is 01:51:18 It looked like he fell forward when he recovered the ball. So we have an injured defensive player on the field. I'm interested to see if they review this because it looked like the ball popped out after he hit the ground. There's a chance that Harrison was down in the backfield about two, three yards back. So O'Brien gets up under his own power, which is great news. And now that was determined a incomplete pass. Was there intent of throwing that football? I don't know about that one, Ted.
Starting point is 01:52:06 Man, interesting calls. To me, to me, he's down in the backfield and the ball pops out when he hits the ground. Well, now it's fourth down in one. And this oiler offense is still on the field. So here we go. Who still leads to 16th rank? Finley Oilers, 19 to 14, 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Fourth down and one.
Starting point is 01:52:29 Finley, after around 46, Harrison in the gun. Davis to his right, two receivers to the near side. One to the far. Harrison, back to pass, throws incomplete. Shennevy on the coverage. Blacks his finger into the crowd. No, sir. Turnover on downs.
Starting point is 01:52:49 And Hillsdale's going to get this ball with great field position, under 10 minutes to go. Let's see if they can get something going here, Ted. They've got to be able to move the ball, got to move the chains, take some time off this clock, and hopefully add some points to the board. I have never seen a defense get gashed on first and second down running, and then on third and fourth down with less than a yard. They're looking like the best defense in the nation.
Starting point is 01:53:20 First down in 10, four Hillsdale. They're at the Oiler, 46. Quarterback run all the way from McCurton, and he gets some nice blocks out to the 39. And Ted, to go back to that last play on fourth down, if you're the Oilers, why are you throwing the ball there? You've picked up five, six, ten yards on every single run. Fourth down in a yard, and you're throwing the ball.
Starting point is 01:53:45 Second down in six. Hillsdale, taking their time. They're at the Finley, 42. 5-5 against the nationally ranked Oilers 19 to 14 McCurnan in the gun looking toward Kinesny now surveys across the field
Starting point is 01:54:02 and throws it out he's going to live another day unfortunately an incomplete pass stops the clock 9 is 16 left in the fourth quarter and here we go again
Starting point is 01:54:22 you've got third down if you're the Chargers. You got to pick up a first down here. You cannot punt the ball back, having only taken a minute off the clock. McCurner in the gun, Gishu to his left, Scura, Ruddy, Carrico to the near side, third down in six at the Finley
Starting point is 01:54:37 42. McKearnan, back to pass, looking, rolling to his right, and he's just going to run out of bounds. And that will cause the clock to keep running, but now it's fourth down in three. you go for this?
Starting point is 01:54:55 You're up by five. Looks like they'll punt it. He had Gishu out in the flat on the left with a lot of running room. If he could have worked through his progression all the way across the field. Chargers could have picked up a first down. Woodier to punt this one away of fake punt would be unbelievable. Fourth down and three for the Chargers at the Oiler 39. It's a good snap.
Starting point is 01:55:24 and Woodyard's going to try to pin them deep. It's close to the goal line and it's down by Carrico with the one. The Charger Special Team's team has been spectacular today. What a punt. What a down by Carrico inside the one yard line. Let's see what this Charger defense can do here. This is a master class in special team. I could not have worked out any better.
Starting point is 01:56:02 This is really dangerous for Finley. They are at the half-yard line. Chargers with the way they're playing on a defensive line are going to try to fight for a safety here. 826 left in the fourth quarter. First out of ten for Finley at their own one. Harrison, the guy, Davis to his right. Panola is showing blitz. And Davis gets out of the end zone.
Starting point is 01:56:24 and he's going to give Finley some breathing room out to the seven-yard line. After all this Charger dominance on defense, the fourth down stands, Hillsdale has not added points. It's still a five-point lead, Chargers 19, Oilers 14. So Finley could take the lead in a half. They've been outplayed it. Second down and four for Finley. They're at their own seven. Harrison, back to pass.
Starting point is 01:56:56 Looking along the sideline's going to watch it down there. Incomplete. Harrison's pass and Pindler. And that will bring up third down in four. Finley, deep in their own territory at the seven. Seven-downs, 478 left. Fourth quarter. Harrison, in the gun.
Starting point is 01:57:23 Bennett to his left. Two receivers, three receivers rather to the far side, one of the air. This is a big third down, folks. Blitzch Jones from Vance. He backs off. Harrison, back to pass, throws, caught. First down, Finley. And that silences the crowd here at Frank Muddywater Stadium.
Starting point is 01:57:50 That was a clutch throw from Harrison. and 727 left in counting in the fourth quarter Hillsdale fans holding their breath Harrison in the gun Bennett to his right one receiver the far side three to the near it's a give to Bennett up the middle he stopped by Beannock at the 21 yard line
Starting point is 01:58:11 how much longer can this Hillsdale defense bend but not break I mean throughout all of the third and half of the fourth quarter they have not allowed one of the best offenses in the G-MAC to have any points on the board. They're playing a great game, very disciplined, especially on the outside. We've just got to stop the run.
Starting point is 01:58:35 Second down in five, four, Finley. They're at their own 21. Harrison, back to pass, looking left, now moves up in the pocket, makes a move past Panola, and it looks like it's going to bring up a third down and one. Here we go again. Scott Eaton checks in the game for Hillsdale as we have another injury for the charges. 6.15 left, fourth quarter. Hillsdale, 19, Finley, 14.
Starting point is 01:59:13 The Oilers trying to cut in to this five-point deficit. Third down in one. They're up to wrong. Harrison in the gun, Bennett, two is right, two receivers to the near. Sottie to give to Bennett up the middle and he's got enough for a first down but just barely out to the
Starting point is 01:59:31 32. That's a great defense by that interior defensive line but he fights forward just enough for the first down and they're going to keep this moving. Clock's running down though.
Starting point is 01:59:47 Five minutes left, five and a half minutes. Five 33 left. Fourth quarter. First down in 10 for Finley at their own 27. Harrison back to pass looking to his right throws. Incomplete. And a huge hit from Jonah Jensen absolutely delivered the boom at the 31-yard line. And that will bring up a second down in 10. The incomplete pass will stop the clock. Second down in 10, Finley at their own 27. Panola showing blitz. 25 left, fourth quarter. Harrison in the gun.
Starting point is 02:00:33 He's going to throw, and it's caught to the 36-yard line. And we have another third down and one. Nice job there from Harrison standing in the pocket, throwing a nice ball into that zone coverage. Third down and one. Finley at their own 36, under five minutes left in the ball game, folks. Hillsdale 19. Finley 14. Oilers trying to take the lead.
Starting point is 02:01:04 Preserve their GMAC championship hopes alive. Harrison, he's going to throw it out in the flat, and that's enough for a first down to the 40. It's a great play call. Had the whole stadium thing can run. Just hits the quick strike out in the flat. Pick up of a couple yards. It's enough for a first down.
Starting point is 02:01:27 Keep these chains moving for the Oilers. Finley doing a nice job on these third down in shorts instead of trying to run in between the tackles. They're getting it out on the perimeter. First down in 10 for Finley. They're at the Oiler 39, 410 left in the ball game. Harrison in the gun. Bennett to his left, one receiver to the near side, two to the far.
Starting point is 02:01:51 Harrison, back to pass. Throws, and it's caught at the 46-yard line. White on the grab. Kalee White has had two really clutch grabs for Finley on the last two plays. Second down. Both followed just inside. Outside shoes in the 45 girls. 3.39 left in the ball game.
Starting point is 02:02:19 Second down in three for Finley. They're at throw. 46. Harrison in the gun. Davis to his left. To give to Davis up the middle. and he gets down inside of Hillsdale territory to the 43. This is danger time. And another injured charger on the field.
Starting point is 02:02:47 This is really unfortunate. They've been plagued so far in this game. Four or five starters have gone down with injuries. This is Evan Vienic. Interior defensive lineman who's played. played a great game today. He's been living in the backfield, the Oilers, and his presence will be missed if he's not able to come back in this game.
Starting point is 02:03:13 So first down in 10, Finley, driving. They're at the Hillsdale 43. 316 left in the ball game. Chargers clinging to a five-point lead. Hillsdale, 19. Finley, 14. The defense is going to have to stand strong one more time. Harrison in the gun.
Starting point is 02:03:42 Davis, two is left. Two receivers to the far side, one to the near. To give to Davis running right. And he's got enough for a first down to the 31. And Finley's marching right down the field. This is by far the best drive. These Oilers have been able to put together in the second half. And it's coming out a great time for them.
Starting point is 02:04:06 We're ticking down towards two minutes. Discharge your defense is going to have to hold up their last stand right here. First down in 10 for Finley. They're at the Hillstale, 31, 219 left in the fourth quarter. Harrison in the gun, Davis to his left, one receiver to the near side, two to the far, give to Davis up the middle. And yes, a stop there from Panola at the 19. So only a one to two-yard gain on first down,
Starting point is 02:04:36 and they're going to have to probably sell out on this second down in eight to try to stop these oilers from really dashing any G-back championship hope for this Charger team. So we'll see, I mean, the boys in the during this timeout, they got to look to their leaders here, really get a stop, dig deep one more time. and they've done that so much of this second half. Chargers have pretty much outplayed Finley throughout, I mean, the entirety of the second half. That two-minute warning could not come at a better time. That defense is gas. They've been out on the field for about six minutes now. It's a long drive from the Oilers.
Starting point is 02:05:33 And hopefully that break there gives this defense time to catch their. breath, settle down and hold up. They got two more minutes. Hillsdale has not beaten Finley since 2021. Second down in eight for the Oilers. Chargers, 19, Finley, 14. Ball spotted at the Charger 29. Harrison and the gun, Davis to his left, two receivers in the airside, one to the bar. Motion from right from left to right. Give to Davis up the middle. And this is going to bring up a third It's four down territory now for the Oilers. Ball spotted at the Charger 25. The clock continues to run down under two minutes here.
Starting point is 02:06:21 We've got third down and four. You're the Chargers. You got two more plays here. Call in all out blitz. Bring the house. And the crowd's getting into this one now. Here we go. Third down and four.
Starting point is 02:06:37 Finley. At the charger 25, Harrison in the gun. Davis in the backfield with him. It's a gift of Davis up the middle, and he's got the first down to the 21. And oh my goodness, just barely made the line to gain. And with a minute, 10 seconds left, Finley's running out of time, and they're not going to be able to keep the ball on the ground. much longer. They're running out the clock now. There's under a minute left, so
Starting point is 02:07:11 Hill still probably will not get the ball back. The defense is going to have to stop him here. First down in 10 for Finley at the charge of 21. Harrison and the gun, Davis 2 is left. Play action. Harrison flips it out to Davis and he's brought down by Panola at the 14, but now there's 39 seconds left. So Finley is going to have to call a time out. Oh my goodness. 39 seconds left. Chargers, 19.
Starting point is 02:07:55 The number 16 team in the nation. Finley University, 14. It's a second down in three. They're inside the Charger Red Zone. the Hillsdale 14. So this is it. If you're Finley, you still have two timeouts, so you can work the middle of the field. You've got everything available to you. This is it. The crowd is chanting defense because they need it here. They have played so well throughout this game. They've held this offense, this prolific offense, only 14 points. They need.
Starting point is 02:08:37 One more stop. Second down in three. Ball spotted. At the Hillsdale 14. Harrison, in the gun. Davis, two his left. The receiver to the near side, two to the far. Got to keep an eye on the running back in the backfield here if you're the chargers.
Starting point is 02:08:59 Harrison, back to pass, throws. It's caught. It's enough for a first down. Jonah Jensen on the tackle, so it's going to stop the clock momentarily. And now the clock runs, 34, 33, 32. And Finley's not going to call a timeout. They're content to let this run. So if you're the Chargers, you've got just a few more plays here.
Starting point is 02:09:21 Hillsdale, 19, Finley 14, first down and goal. 20 seconds remaining. Harrison in the gun, Davis to his right. We're under 15 seconds left. Play action. Harrison looking towards the end zone. Touchdown, Finley. Touchdown, Finley.
Starting point is 02:09:41 inconceivable. With 12 seconds remaining, Finley, 20, Hillsdale, 19. And that is an unbelievable drive from the Oilers, started deep in their own territory, took upwards of five minutes off the clock, and with 12 seconds left, crossing route over the middle of the field,
Starting point is 02:10:10 Harrison delivers a strike. Timeout called by Hillsdale. It looks like Hillsdale's going to challenge the play. It looked like he caught it, although he was sliding towards the end of the end zone so that outward boundary. The only thing I can think of on this review is maybe his foot goes out of bounds on that slide
Starting point is 02:10:41 before he has possession. But with three timeouts in only 12 seconds, if you're Hillsdale, it doesn't hurt to try. So the challenge flag is thrown out. 12 seconds left in the ballgame. Finley, 20, Hillsdale 19. And you have to think, if this call is confirmed, Finley's coming out to go for two. Make sure that a field goal can't win this game for the Chargers. And they're still checking whether it was a touchdown catch or not.
Starting point is 02:11:31 Both teams are lined up on the field like they expect this call to be confirmed. They're going to the instant replay booth. And there's just silence now across this stadium. I cannot believe I just saw that. That was honestly a lot like the Nebraska Indiana game last week. You outplay them for 97% of the game. And here comes the referee with the call. That's a review of the Ronald Phil is upheld.
Starting point is 02:12:08 It's a touchdown. A touchdown for Finley. And now the Oilers are on to attempt a two-point conversion. Twelve seconds left, folks, in the ball game. And the number 16 team in the nation just took the lead over Hillsdale. Harrison in the gun, Bennett to his right. Three receivers to the far side, one in the near. Harrison back to pass.
Starting point is 02:12:47 He's going to throw it towards the end. Towards the end zone. And that there's a penalty marker in the end zone now. Gavin Chenevee on the coverage. And they're going to get Chenevy of pass interference. So it'll be a retry of the two-point conversion. It doesn't have to have the distance to the goal. I mean, it doesn't really matter that much.
Starting point is 02:13:14 It doesn't, there's no clock runoff. You're still going to have 12 seconds, but. It matters if they get it. They get this two-point conversion, and you can't get a field goal to potentially win the game. But with 12 seconds left, getting into field goal range is going to be a tall task either way. Well, even if they get the two-point conversion, you can still tie it up with a field goal. So it's still a field goal game.
Starting point is 02:13:42 But 12 seconds with two timeouts as a tall task. Quarterback run all the way. Two-point conversion is good. Finley, 22, Hillsdale, 19. And with 12 seconds left in the game. game. What we need here, if you're the Chargers, it's a little Shayruddy magic, he's had one. If he can get another kickoff return touchdown, this place will go crazy. But you have to imagine, if it is kicking the ball to anybody but number one in blue.
Starting point is 02:14:17 Yeah, so they do a squib, but the rationale of the squib then is it's better field position, right? So you can kick it deep and just risk if number one runs it back or not. But if he gets tackled to 20-yard line, it's pretty much the game. So we'll see what they do here, a short squib away from number one, or just kick it long and see what happens. You still have two timeouts, but 12 seconds in your starting quarterbacks not in the game. We'll see if they have any tricks up their sleeves, this Hillsdale special teams. It's a long kick.
Starting point is 02:15:06 It's going to be fielded by Ruddy at the 7. He's running right. He has some room. He's to the 35 and he's brought down at the 34. It's five seconds on the clock. So this is just, there's really time for one play here. Even with two timeouts, you can't pick up. much here without the clock running out.
Starting point is 02:15:36 So they're going to have to do the old Miami Duke. What do you call those things? The hook and ladder. The hook and ladder? The laterals? Is this going to be the Frank Muddywater's miracle? We shall see. Five seconds left.
Starting point is 02:15:57 First down in 10. McCurnin, he's going to throw. It's pitched out to Carrico. Carico's brought down and that's the ball game folks. And the Finley Oilers are going to walk it off 22 to 19 with a six minute 85 plus yard drive to defeat the Hillsdale Chargers, 22 to 19. And that's the final year, folks.
Starting point is 02:16:27 Finley, 22. Hillsdale 19. We thank you for tuning in.
