Starting point is 00:00:00 is it supposed to simplify the following is a special presentation of WRFH Sports. First and 10 at the 25 in Dragon Territory. Then two whiteouts to his left, two to his right. As I say it, a little of a crossing pattern on the right side, he was going right to the post and nobody was anywhere near him. That's a touchdown, and this is a tie ball game now.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Touchdown for the Hillsdale Chargers. Are you ready? Hillsdale Charger Football on Radio 3 Hillsdale 101.7 FM starts now. Into Frank Moneywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer. Alongside me is the man, the myth, the legend. Dr. Arnd knows him by name. And the class president, tie-ready.
Starting point is 00:01:05 But first, before we get to the ball game, let's honor our country Oh, say can you see. Can you see by the dawns early What's over the twilight Who's brought stripes and bright Starry?
Starting point is 00:02:37 Unbelievable national anthem, folks, He had a World War II aircraft fly over the field. This is D2 football. I was not expecting that at all. Wow. Frank Muddyrider's Water Stadium rocking on this Saturday afternoon where Northwood Timberwolves come to town to take on the Chargers. Now, Northwood having a really good season, 5 and 1 on the year.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Last week, October 11th, they defeated Lake Erie, 52 to 6th. 7 led by sophomore quarterback Ethan Hammeuse completing 67% of his passes 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions now on the other side of the field Hillsdale last week tough loss to well the number 19th team in D2 that Finley at top of the rankings tie walk us through a little bit from that that close loss that Hillsdale had against the oilers last week yeah the charges went into last week knowing it was going to be a tough game but they sort of met the challenge for most of the game late in the fourth quarter down by just one possession drake badger came up with a huge strip sack for the chargers and they drove down they were inside the five with just over four
Starting point is 00:04:20 minutes left in the game and missed a 21 yard field goal to go ahead so a frustrating loss for the chargers the oilers then took the ball back and just sort of ran it out with about 340 left in the game and the charges went home winless. Like I said, frustrating loss, but they're looking to redeem it this week. So Hillsdale's 2-4. The last two weeks, they fell to Tiffin, 21 to 28. And then last Saturday, Finley, 14 to 16. But they're looking to get back in the wind column here.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Overall, Hillsdale 2-4, Northwood Timberwolves 5-1. Do you know where I was last weekend? I was at Notre Dame football game against NC State. Do you have any more funny stories? I actually do. So we will sprinkle those throughout the program. Now, folks, Ty's a little stressed right now. He's the, he's kind of the poster boy of Hillsdale, a very hardworking English major.
Starting point is 00:05:22 As I said before, Dr. Arne knows him by name. That's a very impressive accomplishment. He's got a lot of papers do. What, 300-word summary tonight? essay due Monday. So let's give us some peace of mind. Maybe say a Hail Mary for him as you're watching this game. And I don't deserve it.
Starting point is 00:05:43 There's, there's, the All Hillsdale College students are stressed. So I'm not more stressed than anybody else here. I just plan very terribly at the end of last week. So front loaded a lot of stuff this week. But we got some charger football today to keep it. Yeah, that is true. No one cares about Ty Ruddy's academic woes right now. Well, it's time for some football.
Starting point is 00:06:06 And it looks like Evan Mick. Mick the kicker. Micker the kicker. To start this ball game for the Chargers. And back deep to receive number 14 through Katie and number five. Carder. Back deep for the Timberwolves. Carter, Nick.
Starting point is 00:06:32 5-8-185-pound redshirt freshman so Mick standing at his own 26-yard line it kicked us one away trots up to the ball and we're underway at Frank Muddywater Stadium field by mix at the 10 he runs right up the gutties to the 30 head esteemed the 35 first forward to the 40 before being brought down by Jonathan Metzger so out trots this Hillsdale defense honestly last week had an unbelievable game against the number one team in the Mac only fell. Well, as we said before, Hillsdale lost 14 to 16, but seven of the 14 points for Hillsdale was from a defensive touchdown. A very impressive defensive stand by the Chargers last week, definitely the strong point of their team so far this season. Colin Morrow with
Starting point is 00:07:20 picking up the strip sack to cut the deficit to Finley to two, but here we go. Handi in pistol, gives it to Brown running right, looking for some blocks, and he's going to get back to the line Scrimmage, maybe one. Brought down by Ryan Nixa. That'll set up a second down in nine for the Timberwolves. Hamby now in the gun. Brown to his left, Brown, a senior 341 yards on the ground, transfer from Lake Erie College. Hamby, looking left, now claps, back to pass, looking right, throws.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Got a man open. Oh, nearly intercepted. at the 42-yard line. That was Jack Trachett who hopped in front and nearly had an interception, but the receiver played a little bit of defense there. It almost looked like offensive pass interference on the defensive player.
Starting point is 00:08:22 It looked like that's what Trachett wanted, but they did not give it to him. So now third down and eight. Ball at the Timberwold 40. Hamby in the gun, Brown to his right. Three receivers in the game, two to the far side, one to the near. Hamby back to pass looking left throws caught first down near the 49 yard line.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Nice pitching catch there from Hamby to Rivard, 6-2-207-pound sophomore. Not a first down. Oh, they did. Oh, the chains are moved and Timberwolves convert on their first third down of the ball game. Before we go much further, I want to point out something that Ted pointed out to me right before the broadcast. Hunter Spurling, senior defense alignment for the Chargers is not in pads. He is not playing today. So we'll be keeping an eye on that. First down in 10 for the Timberwolves at their own 49.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Referee comes in. Some substitution here. Oh. Now we got a timeout called by the Timberwolves. A little substitution confusion on the field. gonna give some breathing room for this charger defense but overall I mean the first three plays of the game
Starting point is 00:09:40 Ethan Hamby showing you why he completes 67% of his passes really sitting comfortably back there and delivering some nice ball I mean I guess the first ball is nearly intercepted by Trachet so he'll still showing a zone coverage here early in the game Trachet underneath to cut off the
Starting point is 00:10:01 the route nearly comes down at the interception. Yeah. The charges, I think, are very confident in their relatively senior secondary this year and even their defense aligned. Their defense is pretty experienced. They have a couple D1 transfers sprinkled throughout there. Shout out Hudson Jones. And the rest of the defense is just really experienced.
Starting point is 00:10:24 They're looking now for the offense. I'll be curious to see how the offense matches the defense's energy in today's game. So 1332 left first quarter. Northwood Timberwolves, nothing, Hillsdale, nothing. Hamby in pistol. Brown behind him, one receiver to the far side, one to the near. It's give the Brown up the middle, and he gets to the 45-yard line. So a nice job there by that offensive line,
Starting point is 00:10:54 which they're returning four of five starters from the 2024 squad. So they rank third in the GMAC for points per game, 27.3. So this is a very efficient Timberwolf offense. They're playing a little bit faster here. Second down and four. Hamby in the gun, Brown to his right, two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Hamby, back to pass, looking left, rolls right to the 50 throws and caught along the sidelines. A little tote bag there, impressive grab.
Starting point is 00:11:25 And that gets the Timberwolves all the way down to the charger 32-yard line. That's Lake Boos on the grab. That's going to move the chains again for the Timberwolves. Handy, in the gun. Ground in the backfield with him, two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Hamby gives to Brown running righties to the 40. Now the 30, and there's a flag on the field at the 32-yard line.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Usually when plays are running to the 30. the outside. It's usually holding, so we'll see what the verdict is. We've got... Offense, number 60. 10-yard penalty, first down. So that's going to put the Timberwolves behind the chains a bit. First down. And 20.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Ball spotted at the charger 42. Hambian pistol. Brown in the back field with him. Two receivers to the forest. side one to the near pitch option left Hamby keeps he's down to the 38 yard line brought down by Jensen transfer from Air Force Academy
Starting point is 00:12:47 some substitutions here Neil Leikins checks out Jory checks in for the Chargers third down in 17 Ball to charger 39 Hamby in the gun Brown to his right Two receivers to the near side, one to the far.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Handy, back to pass. Looking right now left throws. He's got one-on-one coverage down the left side, and it's going to be incomplete. Nice job there for Ryan Nix. A ball was way out of bounds. It's going to set up a third down in a Walmart parking lot. Some more substitutions for the chargers.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Look like they're bringing in a couple more defensive backs. They know Northwood is going to the air on this play. Make it laugh. An obvious passing situation. Third and 17. Ball to Charger, 39. Hamby in pistol. Brown to his left.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Two receivers to the near side. One to the far. 11.59 left in the first quarter. Hamby, back to pass. Looking right. He's got some time. Now, back to the left. Throws caught by boost,
Starting point is 00:13:54 but it's going to be pushed. He's going to be short of the line again. Pushed out of bounds by Ryan Nixa. Balls placed at the 27-yard line, so about five yards to go. and the offense is staying on the field. Timberwolves are going to go for it. It's five yards to extend the drive.
Starting point is 00:14:16 Fourth and five, 1148 left. First quarter, Hamby in the gun. Back to pass, looking right, got one-on-one coverage down the field. Touchdown, Timberwolves. A slant route by Lake Boos, and the Hand-Bea-Boose connection makes it
Starting point is 00:14:35 Northwood 6 Hillsdale nothing really nice pitching catch there cover 2 high cover 2 look from the Chargers and Boost took a post route and what really just went right in between the two safeties
Starting point is 00:14:51 and then yeah a way to thread the needle there by Hamby tough throw to make but he he made it right between two Hillsdale defenders now Drew Katie to make this a 7 point game Snap good, hold good, kick is up, and it's good. That's the 21st straight extra point made by Drew Katie,
Starting point is 00:15:13 and with that we'll take a 30 second break. You're listening to Charger Football right here on 101.7. Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Can you learn from young people? To be informed, inspired, and entertained, tune in to Radio Free Hillsdale. Radio Free Hillsdale. Radio Free Hillsdale. 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted. He's Ty.
Starting point is 00:16:00 If you're just tuning in, Northwood leads Hillsdale, 7 to nothing. Ethan Hamsby, really efficient leading these Timberwolves down the field. We're going to see Colin McCurnan and company for their first drive of the game for the Chargers. The win has blown the ball off the T's. We might need someone to hold it for Drew Katie, the kicker for Northwood. A little gusty winds here, but overall beautiful weather. Nearly 70 degrees and it's already almost October 18th. out over the horizon there's just well red and yellow and green trees it's just a beautiful
Starting point is 00:16:41 michigan fall afternoon the kicks underway by katie fielded at the two by shay ruddy running left tripped up at the 22 yard line really nice wedge there but could have been a much bigger gain on the kickoff return if it was that shoestring tackle You know, I woke up this morning. I always check the news. Okay. I go to the Columbus Telegram, and then I go to the Omaha World Herald, and then I go to Fox News, and you build out from local to national.
Starting point is 00:17:18 And I got a recommendation about the Ottawa Lake State Final. Really? And I rewatch some of it. I'll get back to that. But first, first down in 10 for the Chargers. It's a give to the right. A really nice gain on first down all the way up. The 38-yard line.
Starting point is 00:17:36 that's Ben Gishu. Ben Gishu, the standout freshman for the Chargers, and that's a huge gain on first down for Hillsdale. I think to get back in the mojo with this offense, you've got to get back to the run game, and that's a really nice start to this ball game. First down and 10. Chargers are at their own, 37.
Starting point is 00:18:02 McCurnan in the gun, Gishu 2 is left, two receivers to the near side. one to the far pitch to Gishu running right makes one man miss but then he's tackled by a pride of wolves back to the 36 yard line I really really want to see the ruddy carrico duo go off here today yeah I would I would love to see that for multiple reasons but I think it would just it would get their offense a little bit started able to mix up their their attack a little bit because Gishu Gishu's in his bag right He is, they can run with him all day. They need to get it to the air.
Starting point is 00:18:40 So now second down in 12. McCurnan under center, back to pass, looking left throws. Caught by Colin Davis, and he's brought down at the 42-yard line. That's not Colin Davis. Carson Slocum, a freshman. Carson Slocum with the grab. Excuse me, I got a little excited. I know Colin Davis rather well.
Starting point is 00:19:04 But it was not the size. sophomore with the play. But that'll set up a third down and seven. Balls at the charger, 42. Northwood, 7, Hillsdale, nothing. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu, two is left. Bunch formation to the near side. And Ruddy, Davis and Carrico. Davis, motions across the field, across the line. And now there's a flag, false start on the chargers.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Offense, number 18, five-yard penalty, third down. Carrico with the fall start and that's going to back him up to a third and 12. I thought it was calling for a second. I was going to give him crap about that later. So did I. He was in motion back and forth a couple times. It looked like he might have had some kind of legal motion there, but Carico got called for it.
Starting point is 00:19:53 So now third down in 12. Chargers at their own 37. Motion from Davis. McCurnin in the gun, Gishu, two is right, two receivers to the far side, one to the near. McCurnin back to pass. He's got Carico down the field. Incomplete.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Ball falls incomplete at the 34-yard line. Great defense there from the Northwood secondary. It was in Carrico's hands, but the cornerback from Northwood broke that up rather nicely. A pretty good ball there from McCona, actually, rolling to his right. Slightly underthrown. If he would have led Carrico, that would have been six points. Yeah, a little bit more room on the sideline. Chargers are going to punt this.
Starting point is 00:20:32 one away. Ian Woodyard standing at his own 22-yard line. Back to receive the punt is Carter Minnix. Snap is good. Woodyard's kick is low, bounces at the 26. Now finally dies. It's picked up by Minnicks at the 11, and he's brought down at the 12. Good coverage there from the Chargers. And now Ethan Hamby's going to come back out on the field to try to add to this seven-point lead Northwood 7 Hillsdale Nothing really efficient drive by the Timberwolves to start out the game
Starting point is 00:21:12 And you might have mentioned this already. The Timberwolves have the number three scoring offense in the G-Mack. Yeesh. So a very effective offensive attack from the Timberwolves. Play clock goes to 25 and it starts on my signal after the change of
Starting point is 00:21:27 possession. Raph gave it a little sass to the to the clock operator, but Yeah, the Hillsdale, experienced Hillsdale defense, definitely looking to keep this high-powered Timberwolves' offense in check today. And now, fresh set of downs for the Timberwolves. Handi back to pass, looking over the middle, incomplete. I thought there was fast interference by Ryan Nixa there.
Starting point is 00:21:52 A little bit of a stumbling route by a Timberwolf, but the ball falls incomplete around the Charger, around the Timberwolf 26-yard line. So now second down in 10907 left in the first quarter. Hamby in the gun. Brown to his right. Two receivers to the near side. One to the far.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Motion from the tide and give to Brown. Nope, keep. And Hamby's going to go up to the middle and smack down hard at the 15-yard line. A little RPO there. Read pass option. And Hamby elected to keep it. He's a strong and talented runner for the Timberwolves. And he's a big guy, too, at 6-2-2-20.
Starting point is 00:22:36 That's a pretty big quarterback. Here we go. Third down and eight. This is a big one for the charge of defense. Hamby and the gun. Brown, two is left. Only two receivers in the game. Oh, no, excuse me, three.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Two to the near side, one to the far. Balls at the Timberwolf 15. Hamby back to pass. Steps up in the pocket. He's got a man downfield incomplete. Great pressure there from Injori. Drake Badger and they're going to force a three and out here, a much-needed three-and-out for the Timberwolves.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Anyway, I was going through my news this morning, and I got a recommendation to watch the replay of the 2022 D Division 8 state championship between Udly. Ubley and Ottawa Lake Whiteford. And the man back to receive the punt was the star of that ball game. Nearly blocked by Carrico. It's rather bad punt. It's going to bounce at the Timber Wolf 40 and finally die at the 48.
Starting point is 00:23:40 So Ruddy does not get a chance to bring the punt back. But yes, back to that game. I skip through it a bit. There are some very impressive plays from, well, the Charger number one, Shea Ruddy. So we'll see if Hillsdale can get some production from him and put him in the opportunities to use his talents. because I think he's one of the best players in all of Division 2.
Starting point is 00:24:06 He's a talented guy and I know he's been frustrated as the whole team has been, how the year's gone so far, so looking to use him a little bit more today. Ruddy one-on-one down here at the nearest side. McCurnan in the gun, back to pass. He's looking right, and he throws incomplete intended for Davis. A little bit of an awkward throw there from McCurnan, Double coverage.
Starting point is 00:24:30 It falls incomplete at the Timberwold 35. Would have been an athletic play from the 6-4-240-pounder from Aidan. Not Aiden. Adrian, Michigan, excuse me. I was thinking of the national anthem singer who did an excellent job, Aidan Christensen. So now second down in 10. McCurnin standing at the charger, 47. Balls at, no, balls at the 47.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Oh, incomplete pass tipped up in the air. It's intercepted. Just a disaster play there. They were looking for the screen on the outside with Luke Stanton. Carrico kind of ran a little bubble and they were trying to get the screen to Stanton. Cole Simpson on the interception for Northwood. He's got 41 tackles on the year for this Timberwolf defense, 6 foot, 25 pounds. senior. Usually when the ball's in the air for more than something like two seconds, you kind of
Starting point is 00:25:32 hold your breath and that one was in the air for what seemed like 10 and able to pounce on it. So now the Timberwolves at the Charger 47. So Hamby in the gun, Brown to his left, one receiver to the far side, one to the near. Now motion from Minix from right to left. Handy back to pass looking left. Screen out to Brown and the flat. He's to the 50, 45, makes a man miss. Banks down to the 38-yard line. Oh, man, terrible luck there from the Chargers. Second down and one, excuse me, sorry, I cut you off. I was just going to say there's not much McCurney could do on that play, but it's over now.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Hamby and Pistol, Brown in the backfield with him. Second down in one, ball at their own 38, Hamby back to pass. Looking, looking, throws incomplete. It was in Minnix's hand. at the Charger 20, but Jack Trachett with a really nice job there breaking up that pass. We've already mentioned Tratchett's name a couple times today. He had that near interception on the first throw of the game, I think it was, and a very physical breakup there from Jack Tratchez.
Starting point is 00:26:47 So now it's third down in one. Chargers need to stop. Balls at the Charger. 38. Northwood driving here, trying to add to a seven-point lead. Gamby in pistol. He's just a quarterback power up the middle, and he's going to be really near the first down marker. Evan Biennick with a stop, beat his block, and Hamby really went nowhere, and it's fourth down.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I would assume that Timberwolves are going to stay on the field, but a very nice defensive stop there for the Hillsdale Chargers' defensive line. A lot of monsters up front there. So now another fourth down. The last fourth down of the game, Northwood scored a touchdown. We'll see what they do here. Northwood, Timberwolves at the charger, 38. Hamby in the gun. Two receivers to the far side.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Now Minx motions from right to left. Hamby keeps, throws out in the flat, and it's caught. 25, 15, 10, 5, touchdown. Timberwolves. Mitch Rivard with the touchdown, and that's the second score for Northwood on a fourth down. Yeah, that's right. So both of their scores now have come on fourth downs. A very strong play on the outside there by the Northwood receiver,
Starting point is 00:28:15 able to shake a tackle from Jack Trudgett and then a lot of green ahead of him. About 40 yards to the end zone, and he did it pretty easily. Drew Katie to make this a 14-point game, 629 left in the first quarter. There's a flag in the end zone. Delad game. Offense number 14. Five-yard penalty on the try. I'm rather liking this ref.
Starting point is 00:28:44 He does not mess around in the slightest. Some people kind of have that voice in him. I can't tell if it's just his voice, but he's coming to the booth twice now with the mic. And now the Northwood head coach is standing at the 20, just screaming at the head ref. I wouldn't mess with that head wrath. So now Katie,
Starting point is 00:29:05 gonna try to attempt the extra point with a five point penalty, and the kick is up, and it's good. Well, Northwood 14 Hillsdale, nothing you're listening to charge your football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
Starting point is 00:29:29 I'm Lauren Smith, and it's raining cats. and dogs in Hillsdale today. Actually, it's not, it's clear blue sky. I just said that to give you a taste of all the lovely clichés English has to offer. If anything about the previous sentences feels stale to you, that's because I've used at least three cliches already. I'm defining cliches as any commonly used sequence of words that is not direct and to the point. So, for example, give you a taste is a cliche. Don't get me wrong, these do have a place in good writing, but you have to use them with caution, because if the reader has heard
Starting point is 00:30:01 them often enough, or if they aren't used in a fresh way, they can make it sound like you're not expressing original ideas. What's stopping you from coming up with your own phrase, or just saying exactly what you mean? It's raining like the giant mushroom at the water park is entertaining. It's raining is concise. Take your pick. That's your grammar minute. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium. I'm Ted alongside me's tie. If you're just tuning in Northwood leads Hillsdale 14 to nothing drew Katie with the kickoff fielded by Ruddy at the 15 and he's brought down at the 17 yard line so round two this charger offense first drive ended in the interception off of a
Starting point is 00:30:48 ricochet and Timberwolf Cole Simpson came down with the INT to make it well seven points off of a turnover man I feel like the offense hasn't been on the field much for Hillsdale. They're already down by two scores, so we'll see what they do here. First down in 10. Chargers have thrown 22. McCurnan, in the gun, motion under center rather. Motion from Ruddy from left to right.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Another flag on the field, and it's going to be a fall start for the Chargers. First start, offense, number 85. Five-yard penalty, first out. Carson Sloakum, the freshman tight end. 6-1-2-40 So the freshman tied end, the guilty party and that's going to back chargers up to a first down in 15, 621 left.
Starting point is 00:31:40 First quarter. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his right, ready to the far side, Stanton to the near side. Give to Gishu, up the middle, and he gets maybe one, leans maybe for two.
Starting point is 00:31:55 Gishu He had one on the second down and 14 Kerrico checks into the game Gishu checks out Skura is also
Starting point is 00:32:11 in the game as well Hillsland's got a very talented skill room they just have to get these guys in space to make an impact on this game last week down by
Starting point is 00:32:23 they lost by two to the number one team in the GMA right now this team talented. McCurnan in the gun motion from Davis from right to left. McCurnan back to pass throws incomplete. He rolled right intended for Ruddy and the ball's airmailed right over him and bounces incomplete at the third. That could have been a dangerous throw for the Chargers. Now a third down and 13. Chargers are at
Starting point is 00:32:52 throw 19. 535 left in the first quarter. Been a lot of throwing so far in this game. So the clock, I mean, we're still in the first quarter. It feels like we've been here a while. McCarney, in the gun. Riffel 2 is left. Carricko, Stanton to the far side, motion from Davis, ready to the nearest side.
Starting point is 00:33:11 It's a quarterback power up the middle on a 3rd and 13. So the chargers look like they're just, they want to get off the field. I don't know. That's an interesting call. I don't get that strategy, but it is, I mean, even you watch higher level college football and into the NFL, A lot of times quarterback draws and double screens are the sort of thing they'll call him third and thirteen.
Starting point is 00:33:35 I don't, I've never understood that, but the coaches are smarter than me. So the ball start penalty on the first play of the second drive is going to put him behind the sticks, and now Chargers are going to punt this one away. Woodyard standing at his own six. Back to receive his minx. He's standing at his own 40. low punt bounces at the 45 and takes the charger bounce down to the 38th now tonight on nbcc the notre dame fighting iris you're taking on the u sc trojans oh now i hate to be this guy because
Starting point is 00:34:13 i've been a lifelong notre dame fan but i feel like i can't be a real fan until i go there as a student do you know what i mean i got you know what i mean that's fair yeah so if anyone out there that's listening to this program and has connections to Notre Dame Law School. Hit me up. I have a connection for you. Wait. I'll talk to you after the game. Who?
Starting point is 00:34:33 I can't tell you on air. Is it Dr. Arn? Maybe. But I also know a former class president of Hillsdale College. Okay. He attends law school at Notre Dame. So now first down in 10 for Northwood at their own, 38, 445 left in the first quarter. Gamby in the gun, Brown to his right, looking left, get some pressure.
Starting point is 00:34:54 He moves up in the pocket. Now he's to the 35, makes a man missing. at the 40 and leans forward to the 44 yard line. A lot of great movement there from Hamby who looked like he ran about 70 yards on that play really for about a five-yard game but able to turn nothing into something. Matt's going to set up a second down in five. Northwood 43. Hamby in the gun, Brown to his left, four receivers in the game. Three to the far side, one to the near.
Starting point is 00:35:25 Hamby back to pass. A lot of pressure. And it's caught by Minnicks. He's to the 45, down to the 43-yard line. Oh, man. There were Chargers everywhere around that football. Comedy of errors on that play. Jacob Vance, the leading tackler, incredible linebacker for the Chargers,
Starting point is 00:35:43 was running to cover the bubble screen, and Hamby threw the ball right behind him. I mean, he could have turned his head and housed the ball, but nonetheless, brings up a first down for the Timberwolves. Hamby in the gun Brown to his left two receivers to the far side two to the near first down in 10 there at the charger 43 Oh, Hamby hit in the back field and he's sacked He may get back to the line of scrimmage, but there was a charging charger in there It was Luke Panola right
Starting point is 00:36:13 sophomore Luke Panola out of Zion'sville Indiana one of the strongest men I have ever met in person had an offer to wrestle at Purdue Two-time state champion I believe at his high school in Indiana now a starting lineback for the the Chargers able to break through on that play to get some initial contact. So now second down 11 and 11. Hamby in the gun, Brown to his left. Now Brown shifts to his right. Two receivers to the near side.
Starting point is 00:36:39 One to the far. 254 left in the first quarter. Hamby back to pass. Looking left throws. He's got a man downfield and it's incomplete. Pass break up there from Ryan. Nick. So I thought he's going to do his signature seat belt celebration.
Starting point is 00:36:54 he did not. Nixza loves the seatbelt. But, you know, good defense there. So it deserves a celebration. Good defense from Nixen. That's going to make it third down in 11 for the Timberwolves. Northwood driving. They're at the Hillstill.
Starting point is 00:37:12 44. One receiver to the far side. Two to the near. Hamby in the gun. Brown to his right. Back to pass. Hamby looking left throws. And he's got a man along his sideline.
Starting point is 00:37:23 And it's caught for a guy. first down all the way down to the charger 30 that was actually some pretty good defense there by ryan nixie great defense from nix uh he was all over revard but very strong hands there by number 14 for the timber wolves whose name i do not have at the moment but a good catch to set up first down first down in 10 for the timber wolves at the charger 30 three backs in the back field with handy one receiver to the near side one to the far give de brown running lefties to the third 30 makes a man miss down to the 24-yard line. Case booze on the run for the timber wolves.
Starting point is 00:38:10 And that'll make it second down in five for Northwood. Hamby in the gun. Brown to his left. Two receivers to the near side. Both the Boose Brothers for Northwood. Revard to the far side. left in the first quarter. Hamby back to pass. He's facing a lot of pressure. He's going to run out of the pocket. He's to the 15, 10, and scoots out of bounds of the five. He'll still's getting a lot of good pressure, but they're just unable to bring down the mobile QB for the Timberwolves. Having a bit of a containment issue, yeah, despite the, despite the strong push up front. First down and goal. First down and goal. I've never heard that. First and goal. Man, Hamby, in the gun.
Starting point is 00:39:01 Brown in the back field with him, bunch formation to the nearest side. Hamby fakes two of the right, and he's going to run it up the middle. Touchdown. Incredible second hand for by Hamby. Stuffed at the line of scrimmage and just sort of bounced it to the corner. QB, power left. Just a power left, and now Northwood is up 20 to nothing, and we're not even through the first quarter.
Starting point is 00:39:26 108 remaining Drew Katie to try to make this a 21 point game we've got a Northwood fan at the South end zone behind on the track waving a Northwood flag
Starting point is 00:39:41 Wow the extra point we'll see if it's good snap good hold good kick is up and it's good That makes it 23 now for Katie right 22 straight And with that We're going to take the time out.
Starting point is 00:40:01 You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. This is What's in a Name on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. My name is Megan Hedcock, and today we'll be talking about the city of love, though maybe not the one that you're thinking of. Philadelphia is one of the most historic cities in America. Founded in 1882 by the English Quaker William Penn, its name roughly translates to brotherly love, coming from the Greek words, Phyllos, meaning beloved,
Starting point is 00:40:28 and Adelphos, meaning brother or brotherly. Penn, who gave his own name to Pennsylvania, was not the first to name a city Philadelphia, as it was a somewhat common name in the ancient world. The city quickly became prosperous, housing the nation's first library and hospital, both helped set up by Benjamin Franklin. During the Revolutionary War,
Starting point is 00:40:46 the founding fathers held the first continental Congress in Philadelphia, and after the war, they ratified the U.S. Constitution at the Philadelphia Convention. Though it doesn't have the same centrality as it once did, Philadelphia's name continues to connect the city to the Western tradition that influenced the founding fathers and, in turn, the shape of America today. Welcome back to Frank Muddy Waters Stadium. Northwood Leeds Hillsdale 21 to nothing and Ruddy had a huge kickoff return here all the way up to the Charger 45. But there's flags on the field.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Oh, so the refs are debating with their mic. on right now it looks like the umpire saw a false start on north it's like the continental congress on the field and the referee might have seen a block in the back on the chargers what does that mean is that offsetting this certainly not offsetting penalties this is a 15 yarder and a five yarder so i don't know but this head ref means business today sure does i guess what the verdict is there's a lot of discussion going on two umpires talking to each coach and then we got the head ref sauntering over to the northwood coach remember who was losing his mind and yelling at him probably five minutes ago their relationship may not be the best
Starting point is 00:42:15 there's two files on the play offside kicking team blocking the back number 33 receiving team those fouls offset will be playing down so it is offsetting penalties and they're going to kick again While we're waiting for the setup, I'm going to go ahead and request that Ted gives us a little bit of the broadcast today in Spanish. What? 100% on his most recent Spanish plays. Yeah, I'm just that guy. And plans to study in Spain next semester, right? Yes, I will be in Seville next Spain, or as they say, Sevilla.
Starting point is 00:42:54 I will be living with the family, and my Spanish is going to get better. going to get a lot better. There you go. Yeah, I mean, I'm from Nebraska, so that Midwest accent's not going to be good. Okay, we're going to replay the craziness that happened. So Katie's going to kick this one away, received by Ruddy at the 15, makes one man miss. He gets out outside the 30-two-yard line, and that was a really fun kickoff return.
Starting point is 00:43:29 I actually thought he bugered up his knee. there. I did too. He looked like he sort of, when he jumped he was trying to hop a defender. It looked like he might have popped something, but he got it. So Ruddy's okay. And that'll,
Starting point is 00:43:44 George's got 55 seconds left. And the ball becomes dead. The play clock's 40 and rolls. So we're going to start with my whistle now. There's a problem with the clock operator and the head ref. A free master class today from the head ref.
Starting point is 00:44:00 rules of college football. So 55 seconds left in the first period. McCurnin in the gun, Gishu, two is left, two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Give, no, McCurton keeps. He's to the 35 spin move. Down to the 41-yard line. What a, what command is that in Madden? It's a B button in Matt.
Starting point is 00:44:19 That's the B button. Getting funneled in the outside by the Northwood defense line and Conner-Pratt on the outside block. He started to hit the B move. Picked up a few extra yards. So that's a first down run. Not a first down run. Yes, a first down run, but a 10-yard pickup for McCurnan. Chargers got a nice start to this drive.
Starting point is 00:44:44 Chargers are thrown 42. McCurton in the gun. Motion from Ruddy. Another quarterback power up the middle, and McCurman gets to the 46-yard line. He'll still loves this jet motion. They keep sending Carico or they'll send Shea and J.
Starting point is 00:44:58 in jet motion and they love to play with that because they can do anything really in their run game from there and that's the end of the first quarter northwood 21 hillsdale nothing now folks up here in the booth i have this very special deck of cards that will be used throughout the broadcast to ask tie very funny questions so i'm going to grab one of the cards right now I'll observe this, all right. Ty. Please define the good. The good is that at which all things aim.
Starting point is 00:45:39 Wow. You just explained what it is, but like it's just what we all, I don't understand. Dr. Arn once said in a speech that's now becoming rather famous, he said, Look around and we can see things and we can call them by their name. We can see the goodness in them. And there's a ladder that reaches up to heaven. And when we can call those things by name, we can see God. And that's the ultimate good.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Wow. We've got goosebumps right now. To know the things around them and to know them in relation to God. Wow. That was electric, folks. I need to ask Ted a couple questions throughout the broadcast too. We have the magic deck of cards. McCurner and the pistol.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Gishu in the backfield with him. Motion from Davis to give the Gishu running, right? And he gets up to midfield. So start of the second quarter, Hillsdale's showing some life on offense, but they're down three scores. So they need points now. 8 points, Aura.
Starting point is 00:46:55 There's your panic. He delivers. So now third down in one for the Chargers. They're at their own, 49. McCurnan in the gun. Gishu, two is left, Pratt to the near side, Ruddy to the far side.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Northwood, 21. Still nothing. Motion from Rennie from left to right. It's a quarterback up the middle, and McCurnin's going to get the first down and lean forward to the 40. Seven-year line. Now, if you were listening to that last conversation about the good with Ty,
Starting point is 00:47:29 then you'll now know why Dr. Arn calls him by name. If someone's listening to this and they have Dr. Arn, I mean, just refer the broadcast to Dr. Arn. You know what I mean? It would be greatly appreciated. Yeah. First down in 10 for McCurna. Now they're in Northwood territory under center.
Starting point is 00:47:52 McCurnan's under center, Gishu in the backfield with him. It's a fake end around to ruddy. McCurnan had an open man downfield. It elects to run it up to the 30, excuse me, the 43 yard line. Now there's two flags on the field, so we get a listen to Mr. Head Ref extraordinaire. Tell us what happened. At the end of the play, one looked like it came after. It might have been the same thing, but.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Personal foul, basmast, defense, no one. The head ref is the good. Head ref is the good. Head refs. He sees things. He sees the penalties and he calls them by their name. He knows the good at the very least. So that's gonna tack on 15 yards to McCurnan's run
Starting point is 00:48:37 and it's gonna get the chargers down to the Timber Wolf, 28, 13, 22 left, second quarter, McCurton in the gun, Gishu to his right, ruddy and scurray to the nearest side. Motion from right to left. McCurnan rolls right, looking for Skura. Another spin move for McCurnan, and he's hit down. One yard. One yard, it's a two-yard, three-yard loss from the line of scrimmage. Back to the 31-yard line. He likes that spin move.
Starting point is 00:49:08 He does. It's his go-to right now. Some good pressure from Northwood, so. McCurnon's spin move is the good of spin moves. McCurton in pistol. He shoots who is right. Bunch for Mation to the top with Carico, Ruddy, and Skura. McCurnin back to past steps up in the pocket.
Starting point is 00:49:35 He's got a room to run, slides down at the 22-yard line. I think that's the first time I've ever seen McCurnan slide. Binky, as they call him on the team, is a very physical running, not a very big guy, but a very tough guy and a very physical runner. They're just sort of elected to live another day and slide there for a third and five. So a third down and four charges at the Timberwolf. 22, 1201 left in the second quarter. McCurton in the gun, Gishu to his right.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Ruddy and Davis to the nearest side, scurra to the far side. McCurnin back to pass, looking towards Scura. Now throws over the middle, and it's caught by Ruddy at the goal line. and it's going to be first in goal for the Chargers. Ruddy was open all day and makes a great diving play to put the Chargers at first in goal at the one. Kernan delivered even while being hit. The ball was a little underthrown, but Shay was able to come back to it, dive and make the catch. Setting them up at the two-yard line.
Starting point is 00:50:43 Well, it looks like it's at the one, sir. And it's a tush push. and the Chargers are waiting for the umpires to signal a touchdown. Chargers think they have it. A Tush push from the one has about a 96% effective rate and the Chargers score. A success rate on Tush pushes on the goal line are incredible. Is that true? 96%. That's what I've heard.
Starting point is 00:51:14 It drives me nuts when coaches on a fourth and one do not. do a quarterback sneak they go in shotgun and hand the ball off yeah so the freshman dario to try to make this seven point touchdown for the chargers likens to snap skirt a hole there's a false start so that's going to back the freshman kicker up five yards northwood leads hillsville 21 to 6 hillsdale try to make it seven cut this lead to 14 It's going to back the freshman up five. Hillsdale's had some kicking lows throughout this season so that five-yard penalty might not help. We'll see what happens here.
Starting point is 00:52:13 Snap from Likins is good. Hold is good. Kick is up. And it's good. Northwood, 21, Hillsdale 7. You're listening to Charger football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Where areth thou Romeo? Will I ever meet that special someone?
Starting point is 00:52:41 Ugh, why do my relationships never seem to work out? I need therapy. Is that a tavern? Looking for relationship advice? Tune in to Wherefore Art Thel Romeo on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to hear from me, Emily Shodi, and my father, licensed marriage therapist to Greg Shottie on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Hey, kid, what's you doing over there? Me, I'm listening to Radio Free Hillsdale. You're what?
Starting point is 00:53:15 Don't you know? All the cool kids listen to Radio Free Hillsdale. Oh. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. And that makes you a cool kid. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium and all those cool people out there listening to Radio Free Hillsdale. Chargers are trailing Northwood. 7 to 21. Dario to kick this one away for the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:53:47 Fielded at the 24 by the Timberwolves and a nice run up there for the kickoff. Returner all the way to the Timberwolf 35-yard line. And now the Charger defense to try to get a stop here and cut into this 14-point lead. Notre Dame USC tonight at 7.30 on NBC. Notre Dame loses, they're not going to make the playoff. USC loses, they're probably not going to make the playoff. So it's due or die in South Bend, Indiana. I really hope the fighting Irish can win that ball game.
Starting point is 00:54:26 Did you see the Miami game last night? They got upset by Louisville. I did not see that. First down in 10 for Northwood at their own 35. It's a give to Brown running left. And he gets out to the 43-yard line. Great running there and a tackle from Colin Morrow. Yes, Carson Beck threw four interceptions and they lost to Louisville or as they say,
Starting point is 00:54:51 I guess Louisville is the politically correct way to say it. Some people say Louisville. Hamby in the gun, Brown in the backfield with him. Two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Brown shifts from right to left, second down and seven. Timberwolves at their own, 38. Hamby, back to pass. And he's sacked in the back field by Jacob Vance.
Starting point is 00:55:14 37-yard line and the standout sophomore. It's going to make it third and long and pump some energy into this crowd. Huge play for the Chargers and Jacob Vans delivers again. I didn't know Miami was upset by Louisville. That vindicates me even more. I was talking to my brother earlier today about how Ohio State seems miles about anybody else. Miami number two losing the Louisville. I think it might have been right.
Starting point is 00:55:43 Hamby in the gun Brown to his right two receivers to the nearest side one to the far it's third down in 13, 954 left in the first half Hamby back to pass looking right he's going to get out of the pocket he makes a man miss at the 35 and tripped up by Jonah Jensen great open field tackle there that is the definition of a shoe string tackle my goodness And that Jensen tackle is going to force a punt for Northwood the first of the game. So a chance for Hillsdale now to strike within one possession of the Timberwolves after kind of digging themselves a hole early,
Starting point is 00:56:28 a chance to start to dig their way out. Drew Katie, standing at his own 29-yard line to punt this one away for the Timberwolves. Northwood leads Hillsdale 21 to 7. It's a high kick. Ruddy standing at his own 14 to receive it, and Entrots the Chargers try to cut into this 14-point deficit. Oh, please dial up. Play action, Carrico or Ruddy streaking down the sidelines
Starting point is 00:56:58 so I can just absolutely scream into the microphone. A quick strike. I once said that the kick return is the most electric play in football. I think close second. The NFL has really handicapped that. Yeah, it has. It has. I think a close second, though, would be something like an 80-yard bomb.
Starting point is 00:57:21 There's not much better than that. McCurnan, in the gun, Gishu 2 is right. Motion from Rottie from right to left. It's a quarterback power to the left. And McCurnan's going to get up to the 12-17-yard line. 8-54 left in the second quarter. Northwood 21, Hillsdale 7. Mentioned earlier today that Hillsdale has been running with that jet motion.
Starting point is 00:57:43 They've been sending Keriko or they've been sent in Shay and jet. And from there they can run with McCurnan or they can run with Gishu or they can hand it off to the receiver. They've been running with McCurnan a lot today. I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming drives, maybe even on this drape, they try to spring one with the receiver in motion. Now McCurman under center, Gishu in the backfield, motion from Ruddy. McCurton's going to go back in pass, caught by Pratt at the 27. and he runs up to the 29-yard line.
Starting point is 00:58:13 Connor, Brad, the best beard in the G-Mack. Oh, that is not close. Carico checks into the ball game now. First down chargers. Hillsdale at their own 30. They trail Northwood 7 to 21, 814 left in the first half. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his left. Scura and Carrico to the far side, ready to the near side.
Starting point is 00:58:37 McCurnan back to pass looking left got a man downfield double coverage and it's caught by Carico and he's brought down to the 20. A beautiful ball there from McCarney. A beautiful ball and great concentration from Tut Carico. Two defenders covering him like a blanket and able to just go up and get the ball. Great concentration and a great throw from McCarman. Double coverage, the safety over the top. Kerrico went right past the corner and then went stride with the safety, but a beautiful ball there from the sophomore.
Starting point is 00:59:19 About 50 yards on that play. McCurnan in the gun now, 7.20 left in the first half. Gishu to his left. Carrico to the far side, Netsker to the near side. McCurnan, give to Gishu running right and he's hit down at the 18-yard line. Tackled there by Coleshoe. Simpson he's got an INT for Northwood today man just what the doctor ordered for this charge your offense of 50 yard gain for the McCurnan Carrico connection
Starting point is 00:59:54 Metzger checks out ruddy checks back in 645 left in the second quarter McCurnan under center Gishu standing at his own at the Northwood 25 Carrico and Ruddy to the far side. Play action. McCurnan, looking for Ruddy. He's got him downfield, and is it caught? Touchdown. Chargers.
Starting point is 01:00:23 Another double coverage throw by McCurnan right over the top, and Ruddy snagged it for the touchdown. And there was a wrestling match going on probably, I mean, 30 seconds after he caught that ball. between the Northwood defender and Shea there. She came up with it. Sidelines now hype.
Starting point is 01:00:51 Darya to make this a seven-point game. Likens to snap, scurro to hold. Snap good, hold good. Kick is up, Ben. It's blocked. The kicking woes continue for the team from Hillsdale. The charges just cannot figure out. special teams this year.
Starting point is 01:01:14 Northwood 21, Hillsdale 13. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on 101.7. A nurse who left a new mom a note, and the full circle moment making the rounds on social media makes today's Dean's list. Maddie Nicole became a mom at 16, and her experience was both joyous and terrifying. Maddie did this on her own, and without a lot of help or encouraging. One day she received a handwritten message that changed her life. It said, just a friendly reminder you are doing a great job. Being a new mom can be overwhelming.
Starting point is 01:01:52 He's very lucky to have you. Be confident in yourself and don't be scared to ask for help. Every mom needs help, especially in the first few weeks. You're going to do amazing. Love your nursery nurse, April. And now a few years later, Maddie posted the note and said she is going into nursing to help others. And it doesn't end there. April, the nurse that left her the note saw Maddie's post on social media and the two are back in touch. Janiste, Fox News. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater
Starting point is 01:02:25 Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. Chargers have cut into a 21 point deficit by Northwood and Northwood leads Hillsdale 21 to 13 616 left in the second quarter. So on comes Ethan Hamby has had an excellent game here for the Timberwolves. Already two touchdowns today making it 13 on the season and still no interceptions for the 2025 campaign. First down in 10 for the Timberwolves at their own 20. Give to Brown running right. He's hit down at the 21 by Moro.
Starting point is 01:03:12 And Moro looks towards the crowd and get some nice energy from the sidelines. Definitely momentum in Chargers' hands. Second down in eight. Timberwolves at their own 22. Two receivers to the near side. One to the far. Brown in the next. Brown in the backfield with handy.
Starting point is 01:03:35 It's a quick out route to the outside, and he's thrown down by Nixon at the 26-yard line. A lot of production from this receiving core for Northwood. And we've got a typo in this program, because there's no 14 receiver listed in the program. Hamby in the gun, Browns, who's right? It's a third down and four. They're at their own 26.
Starting point is 01:04:09 It's going to be a long ball down the field. Incomplete. And there's a flag on the field. So the charger stands are already up in arms about this call because for those who, I mean, on the radio you can't see it. The ball was overthrown by 10 yards. Layton Scott is going to get caught here. with a hold and he's, well, he's going to be guilty from a flag thrown from the back judge standing at the 30.
Starting point is 01:04:40 And the Charger's sideline is not having it. Well, Coach Schreffler is not having it. It's the youngest-looking referee on the field. I remarked about this during pre-game. He looks almost my age. It looks very young. Threw it from far away, but nonetheless. Hamby, back to pass.
Starting point is 01:05:04 First down in 10, ball at their own 41, and Ambie's going to take another shot with Minnix. Minnick's had a step on Trach, and it's incomplete. Ball bounces at the 5. My goodness. Two shots here called by the Northwood O'Cordinator to try to take back some of the momentum. So now second down in 10, Timberwolves at their own.
Starting point is 01:05:32 41. 502 left in the second quarter. Hambian pistol. Brown in the back field with him. Two receivers to the far side, two to the near. Brown's got in the open field. He's to the 50. 45 all the way down, chopped down at the 35 yard line by Jack Tratchett. Great blocking there from the Northwood offensive line. A huge hole opened up on the left side of that line. Wow. Northwood's on the move. Do Timberwolves? even exist? Or is that a fictional mascot? That's a good question. First down in 10. Timberwolves at the charger, 35.
Starting point is 01:06:12 433 left in the second quarter. Hamby, back to pass. Throws caught by the mysterious receiver. And balls fumbled out of bounds of the charger 17. That receiver is not listed in the program. My thinking is that he's a backup court. He's listed as a quarterback. My thinking is that he's a backup quarterback
Starting point is 01:06:35 who they might just have at receiver. Almost certainly played quarterback in high school. A lot of these skill position guys do. That's my guess. So Hamby, in the gun. Brown in the back field with him, two receivers to the far side, one to the near.
Starting point is 01:06:51 354 left in the first half. Hamby, play action, looking towards Boos, and it's caught by Boos. at the three-yard line. Jack Trachet tried to undercut the route and hit Boost as he was in the air. And there's a flag. So an end-over-end hit,
Starting point is 01:07:10 and now there's a flag on the field. And it was thrown right as Trachet hit Boos. I'm curious what this would be. Trancet was about five yards off the ball. I don't think this could be past interference. It might be offensive if there was a push-off, but we'll get the call in a second here. party defense number 29 30's the kind it was all of the play first out so a rough
Starting point is 01:07:36 late scott called sophomore out of Texas the town is now escaping me of where he's from same town as blake hayward so play action or eye formation for northwood and they give it to their tackle who gets near the coal line. Oh my goodness. This is throwback to the fridge from the 85 Bears. That's a big, big boy, number 77 for the Northwood Timberwolves. And it looks like Northwood's going to line it again. Lining him up again.
Starting point is 01:08:14 Hamby under center, they give it to it again, and he scores. Kevin Brown, 6-5-38. And Kevin Brown makes an impact on this game and increases the lead. Redshirt Jr. Out of Lake Elsinore, California, in for the touchdown for the Timberwolves. The kicker looks like the receiver is the mysterious receiver, Drew Katie. Katie on to kick the extra point. Hold is good.
Starting point is 01:08:55 Snap is good. Kick is up. And it's good. So we'll get you more information on who this mysterious 14 is. I think before we go to a break two, we have a board operator. And part of the reason we have a board operator is to look up things that we can't look up on the broadcast. Board operator is the Timberwolf a real animal. We'll get back to you after the break.
Starting point is 01:09:17 You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. I'm Emma Wehrman, welcoming you to Far East Close Up, where we provide Westerners a front row seat to the customs, cultures, and everyday life in East Asia. Today, we talk about the history of the ninja. Ninjas were covert agents in feudal Japan, known for espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination. The word for ninja in Japanese is Shinobi. Shinobi were trained in ninjitsu, which is the art of stealth.
Starting point is 01:09:49 And they were most prominently used during the Sengoku period from 1467 to 1600, as this was a time of much civil war and social upheaval in Japan. While the ninja was characterized by stealth and adaptability, he did not achieve this with a black suit. Instead, he dressed like monks or peasants to blend in. Though ninjas of history no longer exist, there are still modern-day practitioners of ninjitsu, who choose to study martial arts, stealth, and espionage techniques. I'm Emma Weirman, and this has been Far East, close up. On Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 01:10:23 Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside these Thai Ruddy. Northwood leads Hillsdale, 28 to 13, and Drew Cady's kick is going to fly through the end zone, and he's picking a fight with Jack Tratchett and Tut Kerraco at the Hillsdale 30. That's probably not the best guys to pick a fight with. Tuck Caracos from Owensboro, Kentucky. Owensboro, Kentucky in the Appalachians.
Starting point is 01:10:53 It's not the kind of fight you want to get in, I don't think. No, sir. So Drew Cady better be careful what he's stirring up. 307 left in the first half. Chargers showing some offensive life here in the second quarter after Northwood went up 21 to nothing in the first quarter. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu 2 is left. It's an end around to Carrico and he's to the 20, 25, 30 attempts to hurtle him in at the 31-yard line.
Starting point is 01:11:25 and the safety for the Northwood Timberwolves got a shoe in the face. It looked dangerous for just a second. McCurney got hit as he was handing the ball off to Carico, but they were able to get it off for about a five-yard game. 244 and counting left. Six-yard game. The first half. Northwood 20-wait, 28, 28.
Starting point is 01:11:47 20-wait, what? Hilsdale, 13. Second down and four. Chargers are at their own. 31. McCurton and in the gun. Slocom in the backfield with him. McCurnan, looking left throws, and it's caught by Carrico,
Starting point is 01:12:05 enough for the first downout to the 36-yard line. Todd Carrico's got a brother on the team, Vince Carrico. He's also got a younger brother at Owensboro Catholic. John Paul Carrico, J.P. Carico, who's getting some Division I want interest. Some offers from Louisville, Kentucky, had a barbecue with Marcus Freeman. Wow, that I did not know. And we're hearing some booze here from the fans, and I might agree with them. They did not give Carrico first down yardage.
Starting point is 01:12:36 Third down in about half a yard. Balls at the charger, 34. And so now. And now we got a timeout call on the field. Shreff is saying to the ref right now, I let that questionable P.I. on the last possession go. I'm not sure I'm going to let this one go. walking out on the field of the ref.
Starting point is 01:13:01 They're still having a bit of a discussion. The timber wolf does exist. The eastern wolf, also known as the timber wolf, is a canine of debated taxonomy, native to the Great Lakes region in southwestern Canada. It's considered either unique subspecies of gray wolf or red wolf or a separate species from both. Thank you, Megan, for that.
Starting point is 01:13:22 So Great Lakes area region is telling me they exist in Michigan? It would seem to be so. And that would make sense. Northwood's a little bit north of here. Have you been to Northwood, Michigan? I went last year when my brothers played them. 14 to 13 victory. Pretty close game up there, wasn't it?
Starting point is 01:13:40 It was a good game. It was a sloppy game, but Hillsdale was able to, you know, put their nose to the grindstone and get that one, get that one, walk away from that one with a win last year, hoping to do the same again this year. And the call stands. I'm not sure they even, like, can review that. Keep raining down from Frank Muddywater's Stadium.
Starting point is 01:14:02 So the Chargers will have to get this third and one. It's probably four down territory with two minutes left. Third down and one. Two minutes left in the first half. Northwood leads Hillsdale 28 to 13. Eye formation pitch out to Gishi running right. And he's not going to get it. Hit down at the 32-yard line.
Starting point is 01:14:21 It's going to back him up to a fourth and three. And that. Reff decision did not give him. Carrico, the first down, is going to back the charger offense up and force a punt. There's a certain look coaches have when they're so angry that they can't even say anything. And Shreff has given that look right now to the side. That was a moment of silence for that unfortunate turn of events for the Chargers. Man, they just been unlucky today.
Starting point is 01:14:59 The tipped ball on that screen, the two fourth down touchdowns from Hamby to boost. and Ninnix for Northwood. Man, they've been so close. And that's been the story of the season so far. Talking to these guys, many of whom we and me and you, Ted, know pretty well. These put the game clock at 154. 154.
Starting point is 01:15:23 They know they have... Take 10 seconds off from the helmet off. We don't want to use their timeout to save it. So we'll be at 144, and we'll start on my signal. Okay. Good explanation here from the run. These Chargers know they have the talent to play. I mean, they played last week at the level with Finley.
Starting point is 01:15:41 It's just they're shooting themselves in the foot a lot of times here, and they seem to be running on some bad luck. So now a fourth down for the Chargers, and Ian Woodard is going to punt it away. Boydier's standing at his own 18. Minnicks back to punt. Not a very good punt. It rolls out of bounds at the Northwood, 44.
Starting point is 01:16:06 So here comes the Hillsdale defense. But first, a little guess who. We're going to pull from the magic deck here for Ty. Ty, guess who I am? I work in the English department. I got my undergraduate degree at University of Dallas and my master's and PhD from UNLV for English. I currently teach at Hillsdale College in English department. Are you Dr. Benedict Wayland?
Starting point is 01:16:37 Correct. Shout out to Dr. Wayland. He doesn't know who I am. I've never been in one of his classes. I've heard great things. But, man, Ty Ruddy, the poster boy of the English department, gets it right. He's a great professor. He actually happens to be my advisor.
Starting point is 01:16:54 So him and I have a fairly amicable relationship. Great guy. First down in 10 for Northwood. They're at their own 44, and Brown gets hit down at the 46-yard line. Man, it feels good to start. stand up folks. Man, sitting all day in class. I just feel my ankles
Starting point is 01:17:11 pooling with fluids. I mean, maybe invest in some compression socks. I've been wearing those around campus. Second down and six. Another give to Brown, and he's going to get pushed by the O line to about mid-field. And the,
Starting point is 01:17:29 just a reminder, the, Timberwolves did not take their time out. They took a 10-second off instead so they are working on three timeouts inside in into Charger territory now Charger's going to receive the ball for the second half but there's 56 left seconds left in the first half play action from Hamby he's looking long he's oh man he's got a man down field Layton Scott in coverage they keep going back to him and it looked like Val Deere had a step Ravard excuse me had a
Starting point is 01:18:05 step on Scott on that play but the ball was overthrown second down in 10 47 seconds left in the first half Northwood at the charger 47 yard line and be in the gun brown in the backfield with him two receivers to the near side one to the far to give to brown running right he makes a cut he's to the 40 another cut to the 35 brought down by jack trachet but that's going to move him in deep into charger territory and they're doing it not by throwing it but by running it 37 seconds left in counting northwood 28 hillsdale 13 Gamby in the gun brown to his left two receivers to the near side one to the far gamby back to pass throws caught the 29 yard line lake boosts on the grab and right now where they're at it's about a 39 yard field goal for Drew Katie who's made
Starting point is 01:19:08 made 50 on the year. So this is well within his range. Handy, in the gun. Brown in the back field with him, 25 seconds left. Second down in three. Threat the Charger 29. Slant route, incomplete. Leighton Scott breaks it up.
Starting point is 01:19:24 And now it's third down and three. That incomplete pass is going to stop the clock, and we have a complete change of the defensive line for the charges. Hudson Jones in at Nose tackle. The Division 1 FCS transfer from Western Carolina. Always good to shake things up in there. So here we go. We'll see if Jones can make an impact.
Starting point is 01:19:50 Third down and three. Handy in the gun, rolls to his right. Looking, throws incomplete. He had Boos in the flat, but the throw was too high, and Booth tried to one-handed. Odell, Beckham Jr. Shades at 2014. That did not happen.
Starting point is 01:20:06 So now it's fourth down and three. Drew Katie He's going to trot on here to attempt a 47-yard field goal and maybe 46 and a half. I'll be impressed if he makes this. 16 seconds left in the first half. The crowd getting loud.
Starting point is 01:20:30 Trying to distract the kicker. For Northwood, snap good, hold good, kick is up. And my goodness. Right down the middle. Good from 55. Drew, Katie. Get your telephone ready.
Starting point is 01:20:46 You might have some G1 coaches calling you up after that kick. My goodness. So that's going to extend the lead for the Timberwolves. They lead the Chargers 31 to 13. Some scores from around the state. I have three different ones and I don't know which one is the most recent. It's this one. Okay.
Starting point is 01:21:22 Finley leads Kentucky Wesley in 21 to nothing. Tiffin leads Thomas Moore, 42 to 3. Ashland, leading Ohio Dominican 31 14. All those games are in the fourth quarter. Washington and Michigan are all tied up at 7. Third quarter. Is Michigan ranked? Michigan and Washington are both unranked.
Starting point is 01:21:45 Nebraska was ranked over Michigan at 25th, and then they laid an egg yesterday against Minnesota. I do not know why I keep watching them, thinking that something will change. Insanities, doing the same thing over and expecting the same result. So Ruddy's going to take this one out. He actually fumbles it, and he's just going to take a knee. Now we have some yells from the crowd.
Starting point is 01:22:13 I thought he might have brought it out and need it in the end zone. That could be a safety for the charges. It might be a safety, but the line just waving it off. That was a dangerous thing. Oh, the ball. Oh, the ball. So pretty heads-up play there that had me hold in my breath. When it's correct, the game clock to 10 seconds.
Starting point is 01:22:38 On that kickoff. Brings it out to the 25. for the Chargers who are just going to knee it out of the half down 31 13 10 seconds left in the first half and McCurnan's going to take a knee and we'll be back for second half action Northwood Leeds Hillsdale 31 to 13 you're listening to charge of football right here on radio free Hillsdale welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on a beautiful campus at Hillsdale college I'm Ted Parenthood. I'm Ted Parenthood.
Starting point is 01:23:20 He's trying to pump this crowd up. Trying to get Hillsdale back into this ball game. They're trailing Northwood 13 to 31. First half of action really isn't really back and forth battle. The first quarter was all Northwood. 21 straight points. Two of those touched, two of the three touch. downs run fourth downs.
Starting point is 01:23:49 I mean, overall, Ethan Hamby has been extremely efficient as he's been all through the season. Still, not a single interception thrown by the sophomore quarterback. Well, second quarter, Hillsdale got back into the game a bit, scored twice. A nice touchdown grab from Shea Ruddy. And I'm trying to think of the other touchdown. It was a quarterback sneak. There was a push push and a passing touchdown to Ruddy. I mean, the most electric drive of the day for the Chargers was a, you know, 50-plus-yard completion of Carrico.
Starting point is 01:24:32 And then right off the back of that, another 15-to-20-yard touchdown pass to Ruddy. And that was kind of the height, the climax of Charger offense in the first half. So they missed an extra point. So they're going to be down here. Well, 31 minus 13. 18 points. Thank you, sir. That's why I'm a history major.
Starting point is 01:24:56 They missed an extra point. So that could come back to haunt them. Tye looked over at me after that happened and said, Hillsdale's going to lose by one point. So if that happens, it may come down to special teams like it has done the past couple weeks, especially last week against Finland. But here we go. Second half of action is going to be underway when Drew Katie kicks this one away.
Starting point is 01:25:27 And I have figured out with help from guys up in the box who this mysterious number 14 player is. His name is Gary Hansen. Gary Hansen is not even listed in the roster. He does not exist in the roster. The name is very suspicious like he works for the CIA or something. It looks like it might be like a Chad. type thing yeah Gary Hansen NFL player and some makeup trying to try to rejuvenate a college career but so Gary Hanson all right for the Northwood
Starting point is 01:26:01 Timberwolves Hillsdale College gonna start out with the ball in this half from the 25 here we go start of the third quarter starts right now McCurton in the gun motion from Slocom from right to left McCurnin back to pass looking long and it's intended for Luke Stanton, and there's not a flag thrown on the field? Man, there was a lot of contact on the sideline. A lot of Jersey in the hand of the cornerback covering Luke Stanton in no call. A slightly underthrown ball made Luke look back for it, and I really thought he was interfered there. I thought so too.
Starting point is 01:26:45 It was right on the sideline catchable ball, but nevertheless. Second down in 10. Chargers are thrown 25. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his left. Ruddy and Skir to the far side. Motion from Carico from right to left. He's got the ball, cuts up the field of the 30. Muscles forward to the 40. No, excuse me, the 37-yard line.
Starting point is 01:27:08 Look, I was at South Bend for a football game for Notre Dame last week. I think Tud could play at Notre Dame. Really? I really do. What's the, why so? I don't know. I just think he moves so well on the field in D2. She does.
Starting point is 01:27:23 I can just, he could play special teams or a slot at the Division 1 level. It could be a standout for the Hillsdale College Chargers. That is true. But I'm telling this guy's talented. I think Reddy, Herico are Division 1 talents on this Charger team right now. First down in 10. Chargers at their own 57. Motion from Davis.
Starting point is 01:27:47 McCurnet, back to pass. Rolling right, looking for Metzger, it's going to fall incomplete. Excuse me, David Dorn is the intended to target, but falls incomplete. Second down in 10. Yes, that is my claim. I don't know. Take with it what you will. I think you're probably right.
Starting point is 01:28:10 We have a friend who thinks that a backup quarterback for the Chargers could play Division 1, so sometimes the guys just have the intangibles, as Pierce Lehman would say. Second down in 10. McCurnan back to pass. He's got pressure behind him. He gets away and throws complete to Ruddy at the 46-yard line. It's going to be taken off the board. There's holding in the backfield, a flag lying at the charger 31.
Starting point is 01:28:37 And, man, it's been the story of this season. Production from Ruddy's been erased by penalties. It's been erased by really unfortunate stuff that I think on paper looks like he's not having a productive year. but that pitch and catch, that 15-yard completion does not exist anymore. Yeah. No, a lot of, and it's a lot of frustration, and I mentioned this at the end of the first half. It's a lot of frustration from these guys, I think especially the athletes who happen also to be the leaders on this team. They know they have the talent, and they know they've shown the talent to be a better team than they're being.
Starting point is 01:29:13 They just keep shooting themselves in the feet. And so now it's second and 20. Second down in 20. Chargers at the throne 27. McCurnan in the gun, Gishi to his right, motion from Davis. Two receivers to the nearest side, one to the far. McCurn, it steps up in the pocket. He shoots it downfield intended for Skura and another double coverage covered receiver
Starting point is 01:29:36 where McCurney attempts to fit the ball in, and that should have been picked off. Yeah, in and out of the hands of the Northwood defender. Scura had to play a little bit of defense there. was able to knock it out. But a dangerous throw from McCurnan brings up third and 20. Third and 20 for the Charger offense. We'll see if they can convert it here. They're at their own 27 still.
Starting point is 01:30:02 McCurnan, it's a little flat route out to Gishu. He gets to the 34 and up to the 30. Three yard line. And they were so far behind the chains. just going to have to punt it. A good pickup there, but yeah, not quite enough for the first down. So on trucks, Woodyard and company punt this thing away to the Timberwolves. Minix back to receive, standing at his own 35.
Starting point is 01:30:34 Woodyard standing at his own 19. Punt is low, end over end, and it takes a Timberwolf bounce up to the 38-yard line. So here comes Ethan Hamby, but I might be looking at some Division I football scores, see what college football universe is looking like these days. Interesting year in Division I, a lot of ranked teams I've noticed been losing, a lot of big upsets this year. The NIL era has made college football more egalitarian. It certainly has, and the top 10 looks a little bit different than it has in recent years.
Starting point is 01:31:23 Andy in pistol. Brown in the back field with him. Two receivers to the near side. One of our first down in 10 for Northwood at the 38. Brown gets about two. Wow. Vanderbilt leading number 10 LSU, 31 to 21. Start of the fourth quarter. Georgia Tech is all tied up with Manny D.S.'s squad. Duke Blue Devils, 10-10, fourth quarter as well.
Starting point is 01:31:48 14, Oklahoma leads South Carolina. 14 to 7. man, I mean, there's just aren't blowout games anymore, are there? Ambie, back to pass, throws out to Brown, the flat falls incomplete. Now, that's a PhD dissertation. The democratization of college football in the NIL era, which you would have thought would have made it more hierarchical because you would have thought that power program would have had more money to spend on players.
Starting point is 01:32:24 I have a theory about this. I think it has something to do with, you got to remember, these kids are 17 and 18 years old. It has to do with 17 and 18 year olds wanting to stay around home. If you grew up in Bloomington and you're good enough to play at Indiana and they're willing to pay you, you go to Bloomington, not Alabama. Third down in nine. Timberwolves at their own 39. 1230 left third quarter. Hamby, back to pass.
Starting point is 01:32:48 Play action throws caught first down at the 49-yard line by Ravard. Mitch Revard with the grab. Yes, that would probably make sense. You know, before the NIL era, you feel forced to go to these bigger schools because that's what you would get, where you'd get production and the coaching to go to the NFL. But nowadays, you're going to get paid to stay at home
Starting point is 01:33:10 with Kurt Signetti, who's one of the best coaches in the country. And you look at someone like Bryce Underwood, maybe 15 years ago, that kind of talent is thinking between Clemson and Alabama. He stays in Detroit and goes, or he stays in Michigan, goes to the University of Michigan. He's having a killer year. Hamby, give to Brown up the middle, and the Lake Erie transfer gets out to the 46-yard line, 1140 left in the third quarter. I don't want to make it clear that I have actually zero proof that this is what is causing the new democratization. But I think it is a fair theory about why many of the Indiana, number three in the country, who would have expected it five years ago?
Starting point is 01:33:54 You know? I think they're overrated. Okay. After they beat Oregon last week. Oregon was a good win. Second down and four for the Timberwolves. They're driving trying to add to this 31-13 lead over the charges. Handi back to pass in the pocket.
Starting point is 01:34:11 He's sacked in the back field by Vance back to the 48-yard line. And Hamby has had a nice pocket today. Here and there he's had a lot of time to throw. he just took an egregious amount of time to throw and the charges were able to get to him eventually. Third down in 10 for this Hillsville defense. They need a stop. The boys need a stop. Get it done. Here we go. Third down in 10. Let 10 33 left in the third quarter. Hamby in the gun, Brown to his left. Two receivers to the near side. One to the far. It's a sprint out right. Sprint out left for Hanby. Throne.
Starting point is 01:34:54 case boost but it's going to be short of our first down out to the 48 yard line of the Chargers and Hillsdale D forces a punt so you're down by 18 which means it's a three point it's a three possession game which means you need to start scoring as soon as possible true Katie to punt this one away for Northwood standing at his own 35 ready standing in the shadow of the gold post at the 15 and he's going to leave it and it's going to fall into the end zone so touchback and the charge is going to set up shop at the 25 the 35 charges need something here 9 to 56 left in the third quarter nice warm day for late October football.
Starting point is 01:36:11 I'm sweating up here. So that's why I said something. A little bit of a delay here from the Mr. Head Ref Masterclass, but we get it underway finally. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu 2 is left, three receivers all to the far side. Nope, to give the Gishu,
Starting point is 01:36:29 that was nearly fumbled. My guess would be that that was some kind of option. McCurnin held on to that ball a long time. And Gishu was trying to tear it away from him, which running backs are taught. to do. The ball is yours unless the quarterback grips it. And it looked like that was some kind of option, but almost the
Starting point is 01:36:47 disaster for the Chargers. Three yard gain for them. Two yard game, rather. Second down on eight. McCurton, in the gun. Slocum, in the back field with them. Ready to the nearest side, Pratt and Carrico to the far side.
Starting point is 01:37:04 Motion from Davis from left to right. There's another flag on the field. It's a false start. on the Chargers. The Chargers last week, or maybe the week before, had a stint of... Offense, number 80. Five-year-guilty, second down.
Starting point is 01:37:25 Colin Davis, the guilty party. He's going to hear it from me on Monday. The Chargers, like I was saying, fall starts have been one of their Achilles' heels. They had a series with four fall starts in a row last. week. McCurn and in the gun, Gishu to his left, second down at 13. He'll still have their own 17. A little out route to Carico and he takes a huge hit at the 23. Call something like that. Cole Simpson delivering the boom. But yes, hospital ball would be an accurate description of that.
Starting point is 01:38:02 Carrico is up and walking though. He looks like he's good. He was good for about five yards, four yards on that play. Springs up third and six for the Chargers. Third and six for Hillsdale. They need it. They must have it to stay in this ball game. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his left. Ruddy and Carrico to the far side. 824 left in the third quarter.
Starting point is 01:38:28 McCurnan, back to pass. Looking left, steps up in the pocket. It's a wobbling duck, and it falls incomplete. looked like McCurnan might have gotten tripped up right as he was throwing that ball. And just under through Shea a little bit. And that's a three and out for the Chargers. So Ian Woodyard's going to have to kick this one away. Woodyard, standing at his own 10.
Starting point is 01:39:07 Minix back to receive this one standing at his own 40 takes a Hillsdale bounce picked up by Minnicks at the 30 makes a couple of madness up to the 39 yard line You are the athletic director at Penn State Oh boy this is another magic card question You just fired James Franklin Who are you going to hire man? Yeah, that's a good question.
Starting point is 01:39:39 I've changed parties a couple times on whether they did the right thing. I mean, Franklin can't win the big game, but you'd rather have no coach or a coach who wins 10 games a year. I think Franklin kind of got the short end of the deal there. First down in 10 for Northwood. They're at their own 39. Hamby back to pass, and he's sacked in the backfield again. The defense is keeping the Hillsdale Chargers.
Starting point is 01:40:07 in this game. 100%. They are putting the team on their backs. And yeah, these animals up front doing a really good job with pressure, allowing that time it was Luke Pinola and maybe Jacob Vance, I think, to blitz their gaps and get to the quarterback. You need both levels to do their job, and the Chargers are doing a really good job of that on defense right now.
Starting point is 01:40:34 So now second down in 19, 726. left in the third quarter. Northwood 31, Hillsdale 13. Blitz from Panola, give to Brown up the middle, and he's hit down at the 33-yard line. More substitutions
Starting point is 01:40:53 in on the field, and that looks like it's the little baby ruddy's out on the field now. It's the middle ruddy is who it is. Well, I mean... Yeah, yeah. The baby of Hillsdale. Baby Hillsdale ruddy. The baby Hillsdale ready on the field.
Starting point is 01:41:07 We'll keep an eye on him, folks. Third down and 16. Northwood, thrown 33. Chargers need a stop. They lead Hillsdale 31 to 13. Hamby, in the gun, looking right, throws, and it's caught. And a little shoestring tackle there from Ruddy, and are we going to get a facemask called on the charger secondary?
Starting point is 01:41:33 I didn't think it looked like facemasked. A shoestring tackle, he was down. My guess is it's going to be. something on sports and like after the play if it's anything i didn't it didn't look like there was there could not possibly have been a penalty on that play but number 27 for the charges personal foul face mask okay number three defense said Ted saw it quicker than I did his helmet came off but i don't know if it was because it was ripped off or because a forearm hit it we will almost certainly see that in the film later on in the dorm
Starting point is 01:42:07 today. Casa Davis, I think, was in the refs' face there. Not happy with that call. First down in 10 now for Hamby and Company. Timberwolves driving. Motion from boost from right to left, hand knee up the middle, and he's hit in the back field by Beinnick. No, Drake Badger, rather.
Starting point is 01:42:26 Very strong. Play there from Drake Badger. Sacked him with one arm. He was on his knees and just... That's the fourth sack today. Grabbed him. Yeah, yeah, well, it's the third. sack this half that's defense is playing well I mean there's 31 points on the board
Starting point is 01:42:45 though but they're playing well this half the boys need a stop Hamby Hamby in pistol brown in the back field with him two receivers to the far side one to the near give to Brown up the middle and he gets back to the line of scrimmage up a 38 yard line so back to third and a mile as Ted said earlier in the game third and a walnut parking lot but they have had trouble in the back half of drives today with you know giving up touchdowns on fourth down a lot of late drive penalties basically giving free possessions to the timber wolves so they need to get off the field on this drive to give their offense the chance to score quickly before the third quarter ends third down in 10 timber wolves of the charger
Starting point is 01:43:32 38 trying to add to an 18 point lead they lead hillsdale 31 to 13 Andy in the gun back to pass looking looking throws got a man downfield it's caught touchdown Northwood Mitch Revard on the grab and that 18 point lead becomes a 24 point lead streaking down the sidelines Mitch Revard caught an absolute beauty of a ball from Hamby, and I am in stunned silence right now. Yeah, it's those, they get into the second half of the drive,
Starting point is 01:44:24 and it just sort of seems deflated. The kick is good for the Timberwolves. Katie, able to make it 38, 13, and it's the same old for the Chargers. 13 to 38, 503 left in the third quarter. We're going to take a break. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7. He's instituted some pretty sweeping reforms in our school. Like what, Connie?
Starting point is 01:44:55 Like taking the gum machine out of the cafeteria. What will you hear? A cup of coffee. Sanker, pinkie or schmanky. That was when radio was. Hear more of the golden age of radio. Weekdays at 10 p.m., Saturdays at 7 p.m. And Sundays at 3 a.m. on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 01:45:29 You found the Hillsdale archives. All the exclusive speeches and lectures. This mission, if you choose to accept it, is to listen to the Hillsdale Archives right here on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. This message will self-destruct in 10 seconds. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium. The Timberwolves just kicked the ball off. Shea Ruddy, fielded the ball with the goal line and wrestled down around the Hillsdale 14, so they will set up shop inside their own 20. 4.57 left in the game, down 13 to 38.
Starting point is 01:46:06 They got a lot of ground to make up if they want to improve in the win column this week. You guys are probably wondering, oh, quick. This is Ty Ruddy's inaugural. Inagrille. Play-by-play. Yes.
Starting point is 01:46:25 So, McCurnon. So, McCurne. From the gun, Gishu to his left, two receivers on the field. Pratt up top, ready to the near side. Ruddy in motion. And McCurnan keeps it to the right. Powers is way for about a three-yard gain,
Starting point is 01:46:41 and a pack of Timberwolves takes them down around the Hillsdale 19. What is the strategy moving forward for the Chargers? I mean, we got a lot of ground to make out. Okay, you're down by 25. 433 left in the third quarter. You have to start throwing the football. Yeah. Downfield, start pushing it downfield and expose, exploit this cover two defense.
Starting point is 01:47:13 McCurnan from the gun now, bunch up top with Ruddy and Davis. McCarrenan holding the ball, rolling, rolling, and sacked in the backfield by almost the entire Northwood defensive line. It looked like the Hillsdale offensive line just sort of collapsed there. McCurnan held the ball for a while. There's a flag at the 35. and Hillsdale is not happy. It looks like there might be an offensive holding up some kind.
Starting point is 01:47:44 As we await the call, now Northwood players are arguing with the refs, so there's hope that it might be a defensive holding. So some free yardage for the chargers there brings them up to the 29-yard line. Mekernan stays in the gun, Gishu to his left, ready to the near side, three receivers to the far side with a tight end in the game.
Starting point is 01:48:15 McCurton takes the snap, drops back, looking, looking, and hit as he throws, just under throws Colin Davis to the near side, around the 35-yard line that bounces incomplete to bring up second and 10 for the Chargers. Number 85. Really wasn't even close to Dave. Davis was on a crossing route across the middle. The ball fell out his feet. Probably good because it was tight coverage on the charger tight end.
Starting point is 01:48:44 Slocum now in on the opposite side of Davis. So they got a jumbo double tight end package in. Ruddy up top. Number 17, John Metzger to the bottom. McCurnin and the gun, Gishu to his left, fake the handoff. And Metzker on a, excuse me, that was Tuck Carrico up top. On a quick slant and the ball falls incomplete after Kekar. Kiriko stumbled into the route.
Starting point is 01:49:09 Another sub as our head ref is telling us, it looks like Ryan Skura checks into the game for Carson Sloakum. So going back to a three receiver set. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his right, takes the snap, drops back, looking, looking, rolling now to his right. Kiriko wants the ball, and he has it. Up at the Northwood 45. Carricko's thrown down in the white along the Hillsdale sideline and no flag is thrown.
Starting point is 01:49:44 Carrico stepped out of bounds and the little bit of extracurricular activity there from the Northwood defensive back but no flag thrown. Nevertheless, it's the first down for the chargers at the Northwood 47. Three receivers in the game, Keriko, Metzker, and. Skura up top recurring in the gun. Gishu to his right. He pitches it to Gishu to the left, trying to bounce it all the way to the sideline and good for about a five-yard gain around the end for Gishu. Who's been, I mean, the star so far of this Hillsdale offense this year. Definitely a standout, definitely a surprise to me at least. Had a good running back two years ago and Mike Herzog struggled a little bit in the run game last year,
Starting point is 01:50:34 but it looks like they found their answer in Gishu. This year, Skura now comes off the field. Karakow to the far side. Metzger to the near side. Slocum and Davis both in the game. Metzkeran in the gun, McCurnan in the gun, excuse me. And it's a RPO. Oh, he's got a man.
Starting point is 01:50:52 And it's Kariko to the far side for the 48-yard touchdown for the Chargers. The little sign of the cross at the end. And the Chargers cut into this 25-point left. lead. Now, Northwood was running a cover two defense, but their two safeties were really far down near the line of scrimmage, just shadowing over the corners. It looked like, yeah, it looked like they were trying to do some kind of like show blitz. I don't know what the deal was there, but it looks like one of the safeties, at least the one who should have bow on that side, might have bitten on the RPO because McCurnum. Yeah, they were playing very far back. They were playing almost
Starting point is 01:51:33 right over the top of the corner and now it looks like the charges are going to go for two here are going to go for two try to make up that extra point that they missed earlier mccernan in the gun gishu to his right bunch set to the far side and they throw it to the far end zone far corner of the end zone and it's overthrown just out of bounds some tight coverage by the northwood defense there falls incomplete chargers now trail northwood after a long touchdown 19 to 38, 2 minutes and 33 seconds left in the third quarter. We're going to take a break. You're listening to Hillsdale football right here on 101.7 Radio FM.
Starting point is 01:52:15 This is the Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group. At 512 a.m. on April 18, 1906, San Francisco suffered a massive earthquake killing 3,000 people, destroying 25,000 buildings, and leaving a quarter million residents homeless. Resulting fires ranged unchallenged for four days and nights due the broken water mains and exploding gas pipes. The earthquake shook the ground as far away as Oregon, Nevada, and Los Angeles. The San Francisco police mobilized throughout the city to protect people and properties with a standing order to shoot looters on site. Out of the ashes, city planners used the disaster to rebuild San Francisco from the ground up, and that is exactly what they did. This has been the Making of America.
Starting point is 01:53:07 I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com. Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted alongside Knees Ty Ruddy. You're just tuning in Northwood Leads Hillsdale 38 to 19, and it looks like Greg Jones gets out to the 35-yard line. Greg Jones. It's Gary Simon. It's Gary.
Starting point is 01:53:35 Gary. Hansen. So over the break, I get told by the workers up here that this mysterious player who's listed 14 in the program doesn't exist. And that his name's Gary Hanson.
Starting point is 01:53:49 Yeah. Gary Hanson is the mystery wide receiver number 14 who wears the same leg sleeve on his left leg as the kicker Drew Katie. I believe his name is Drew Katie. And so we were very confused.
Starting point is 01:54:05 It's one athletic kicker, but we were told that is not who it is. The handian pistol trying to respond to this Hillsdale six point score, and it's a pitch outside to Brown, and he gets knocked out of bounds at the 40. So we're going to put Ted back on play-by-play. Yes, how did I do? I just needed a break. Is it harder than you thought? It's a lot of moving parts at once.
Starting point is 01:54:28 It's like a dance, like swing dance. You know what reminds me of is trying to read piano music. I can do it fairly well. Yes. You can do it fairly well. It's just like you always feel like you're running up against an edge. Yeah, the rapidity of it, like the rhythm. But saying it differently, too.
Starting point is 01:54:47 If you keep saying the same thing over, it just sounds like you're an AI or something. So now second down in seven. North Wood at their own, 39. Gandy gives to Brown running right, and he's hit by Biennick and Morrow and a crew of chargers at the 42-yard line. struggle with a lot is just counting the tick marks yeah that I just feel like dyslexic when I'm like Tomberg was you know my my strategy there was was just say the first number and then just roll with it yeah I mean I think I think I said it was a 48 yard touchdown last
Starting point is 01:55:21 time I believe it was a 42 yard touchdown but I think I actually a 43 yard touchdown there they're on their own 43 not their 45 not your player needs to leave the game somebody's gonna have to leave the game somebody's gonna have to leave game says the head ref. And it's third down. Let's make it loud. I love the PA announcer here. I don't know his name.
Starting point is 01:55:51 But it's third down in three. Minute 13 left in the third quarter. Gamby in pistol. Brown to his left. Motion from Hanson from left to right. Gamby running left. It's QB power all the way and he gets hit down at the 47-yard line. there's your there's your short-rearded situation when they go with the shotgun
Starting point is 01:56:12 shotgun call for the quarterback maybe if you got a big quarterback it works to do some kind of draw like that you know quarterback draw has been an effective tool for both squads today and it was effective on that third down conversion to keep bleeding this clock and hold on to the 19 point lead now gambi it looks like they're hamby excuse me trying to speed up the offense a bit. He's in pistol. Brown's in the back field with him. One receiver to the near side, two to the far. Moro showing blitz, play action. He's got a man downfield. It's caught by Hansa the 15. Oh, tripped up at the eight-yard line, a shoestring tackle there from Layton Scott, and he's down on the field at the 11. We got an injury on the field, a shoestring
Starting point is 01:56:58 tackle by the sophomore. Saves six points, but Northwood, is in business again. Knocking on the door. And Layton Scott actually able to get up and jog off the field of his own. He's had a lot of looks today. Northwood's going after him. But Gavin Chenevee's injured. And we never talked about that.
Starting point is 01:57:23 Yeah, that makes sense. Layton Scott is a great player, but he's a sophomore and usually plays behind Gavin Chenevy. I didn't even notice that until Ted said something. That's the end of the third quarter. The third quarter comes to an end. Hillsdale 19, Northwood, 38. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. We'll be back for fourth quarter action. Welcome to the Grammar Minute,
Starting point is 01:57:50 where we're saving the English language 60 seconds out of time. I'm Lauren Smith, and let's settle this question once and for all. What does it mean to say that something is inflammable? Despite the misleading prefix, inflammable means the same thing as flammable. That is, it refers to to something which is easily set on fire. That prefix, by the way, comes from Latin and literally means in. Saying something is inflammable is essentially saying it is in flames. A common misconception is that inflammable means both easily set on fire and not easily set on fire. Fortunately, this is not the case and it only means easily set on fire.
Starting point is 01:58:28 The correct way to say that something is not easily set on fire is non-flammable. Or to reduce confusion, you might say incombustible, which kind of makes sense. things worse because it's the same prefix but it means the opposite thing and that's english for you that's your grammar minute visit the grammar minute dot com for more tips and tricks welcome back to frank muddywater stadium on the campus of hillsdale college i'm ted farringer a long side knees tie ruddy northwood leads hillsville 38 to 19 it's the start of the first quarter not the first quarter the fourth quarter northwood trying to tack on to the 19 point lead they're at the Hillsdale
Starting point is 01:59:08 9 Ethan Hamby in pistol brown in the back field with them motion from right to left from Boos Hamby looking over the middle incomplete intended for Hanson
Starting point is 01:59:21 Jack Tratchett on the coverage and I thought that was going to be P.I. there yeah I did too the refs have been very inconsistent avoiding on some stuff and then getting involved on other
Starting point is 01:59:34 things that seems to me to look exact opposite of what it should be. But it's hard to be a refs. So got to put some respect on the refs. Second down and goal from the Charger 9. It's a QB run all the way for Hamby, and he gets down to the 8. You know, it's very difficult to be a play-by-play-and-outter at the highest level.
Starting point is 02:00:01 That market must be awful. But to be a D1 ref and to be on the field, though, you can climb those. I feel like you can move up pretty quick. Don't you think? So here we go. Third down and goal. Seven yards to go for Northwood to try to extend this 19-point lead. Hamby, in the gun.
Starting point is 02:00:25 Brown in the back field with them. Play action. Hanby looking left. It's a corner route at the end of the end zone, and it's incomplete. Carter Minnix, the intended target. He caught it, but he was already on the white. By the time the ball was in his hand, so now Drew Cady to come out here to make it a 22-point lead. To hold is Case Boose, and it's going to be a 25-yard field goal.
Starting point is 02:00:57 He lines it up, takes two steps to the right, one prep step. We'll see how this snap is. Snap, good, hold good, kick. is up. Man, get that kit of scholarship. Very consistent. Mr. Automatic from inside the 30, really. Mr. Automatic on Northwood.
Starting point is 02:01:20 So the sun has gone away, which is not a surprise for Michigan. Climatological analog of Michigan is Ukraine. Who said that? Dr. Smith. That's a really good comparison. The climatological analog of my home state, Nebraska. is Russia. Is that true?
Starting point is 02:01:40 Yes. Okay. He's big into ecology and geography and they're involved in influencing people. Okay. So the music's really getting pumped up here and I'm trying to figure out why that is. Are they throwing something? I, it looks like that's what it was, yeah. See, I never get a free t-shirt.
Starting point is 02:02:16 So, Grady's kick is underway, and it's caught at Ruddy at the one, and he's going to take this out. He's running left. He makes it cut at the 15. Oh, my gosh. Makes another man miss at the 35, 40. He could go all the way to the 50. One kicker to beat.
Starting point is 02:02:33 And he hit out of bounds of the 45. He was 53-yard. 53-yard kickoff return for Roe. Ruddy and that was much needed to try to cut into this 22 point deficit right now to Northwood. Yeah, play action right here. Northwood won't know what you're not. Take a shot. So a good return, the sort of thing they've been looking for all day is almost broke a couple of them, finally broke that one.
Starting point is 02:03:03 First down in 10, Chargers at the Northwood 37. McCurn and in the gun, Gishu to his left, motion from Dave. from right to left. McCarnet, back to pass, looking left, a little screen, and it's intercepted. 50, 45, 30, down to the 15-yard line, goes a Northwood Timberwolf. Jayland Pitchford, with the interception in all momentum from that 53-yard kickoff return from Shea Reddy has disappeared into the ether. There is... Interception return.
Starting point is 02:03:44 So I have two brothers on the team. There is just an insurmountable amount of frustration with this season. And as that play was unfolding, toward the back half of the sideline is where a lot of the, you know, subs for the offense were sitting. And they turned around. You could just feel, you could just feel the frustration. Nothing is going the Chargers way.
Starting point is 02:04:12 this season. I mean, they... So now it's first down in 10 for Northwood. They're at the Chargers, 17. Give to Brown up the middle and he gets down to the 12. 41 to 19. Chargers are trailing the Northwood Timberwolves.
Starting point is 02:04:37 A lot of silence on the Hillsdale sideline right now. Hamby. In Pistol. Brown, to his right, we got a We got trips all the way to the far side near their Timberwolf sideline. Hamby is just going to give to Brown up the middle.
Starting point is 02:04:55 He gets through one tackler and then another hit down by Nixa at the five. There was a claim that he fumbled the football, but he was ruled down by the referees. First down and goal for Northwood. They're at the Charger 5. They lead Hillsdale, 41 to 19, 1238 left in the first, not the first, in the fourth quarter. Hillsdale's challenging the ruling on the field of Bill Fumble. So the Fumble will be challenged. And we will look at some around the state scores.
Starting point is 02:05:47 pulling away from Washington. Finley defeats Kentucky Wesleyan 28 to 0. Tiffin defeats Thomas Moore, 45 to 10. Nashville defeats Ohio Dominican, 31 to
Starting point is 02:06:03 14. Hillsdale, where the loss is going to drop to 2 and 5 on the year. They'll be back here at home next week against Lake Erie, who lost
Starting point is 02:06:17 It's in Northwood. Seven to 52. So an opportunity next week for the charges to get back in the wind column. But there will be a game coverage right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. I believe that game coverage will be by us. Or not? I signed up for all five. If you have papers to do, you have a ladybug on your face.
Starting point is 02:06:46 I thought it was a B. If you have stuff to do, just let me know. And I can find somebody else too. I'll make it work. He will make it work, he says. And the tie and Ted train continues chugging along through 2025 football campaign. Oh, and after Lake Erie, the last home game will be the very last game of the year against Ohio Dominican. Which is a rivalry of sorts.
Starting point is 02:07:19 They play them always in the last game of the year. I'm not sure how much our rivalry O'Dominion is for the Chargers. You know they're playing for a trophy here today. I did. I noticed that. I was wondering if we should mention that. Go ahead. Coach, I have to see his last name.
Starting point is 02:07:35 Pat Repna. Reepna, the Hillsdale College graduate, a stellar quarterback for the Chargers back graduating in 1983, then went on to coach it. Northwood took over the program after his 0 and 9 season and brought them to some Gleac championships. But the two schools decided to have a little trophy series for the new rivalry established, well, 2025. So Northwood will more than likely have the trophy as the first win of this new trophy series rivalry. But there's still 1237 left. And as I always say, Tom Brady, he still won that Super Bowl when it was 28 to 3 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Starting point is 02:08:21 That's true. First down in goal for Northwood. They're at their own five. They're at Charger 5, not their own 5. And we have more whistles on the field after a long discussion about whether the fumble was actually a fumble. Please correct the game clock to 12 minutes, 30 seconds. It starts on the snap. Clock operator again, hearing it from the head ref.
Starting point is 02:08:57 And now there's just... 1237, please, 1237. Now there's just kind of some awkward elevator talk right now. Everyone's just kind of standing around waiting for that clock to be fixed. And now it is. And here we go. 1237 left in the ball game. First down and goal.
Starting point is 02:09:16 Northwood at the Charger 5. It's a quarterback power all the way for Hamby, and he gets down to the 1. What am I going to do after this? I'm going to go back. After this game? I'm going to probably have my saga burger patties with rice. No catch up.
Starting point is 02:09:36 Don't need that red 40. And I'm going to go back and probably just lay down on my dorm floor and just decompress from talking for. three and a half hours straight. I guess the question I would ask Ted Ferringer is if he could do this for a living. Uh-oh. Oh. We have the fridge back in the game.
Starting point is 02:09:59 This is the 85 bears right here. They're not going to give it to him. They're going to throw it over the middle incomplete. So the tackle. So he was a diversion. Yes. Tackle has been used as a full back and he scored a touchdown in the first half. You asked me if I would want to do this for a living.
Starting point is 02:10:16 Could Ted Ferrenger's? A career. I don't know. What I want to. I mean, yes, it would be great to work at ESPN. I would love that, but I don't know if I want to spend those years climbing the ladder at, like, smaller radio stations and stuff. Third down and goal.
Starting point is 02:10:38 Northwood had thrown two. 11.59 left in the ball game. Motion from boost from left to right. Hamby, he's going to go in. No. I thought he was going to get in the end zone, but Jonah Jensen says, No, sir. Smackdown at the 1.
Starting point is 02:10:55 Hit from below by Joby and up top by Jensen and he went flying. He got a full 180 in the air. That was a hard hit from Jonah Jensen. The D1 transfer from the Air Force Academy. One of the most well-liked people on the team, I think. Very nice guy. but a monster on the football field. Down and goal.
Starting point is 02:11:20 Northwood. At the Charger 1. 1118 left in the ballgame. It's a give to the tackle. And he scores. No. The ball's on the ground. Colin Morrow's with the ball.
Starting point is 02:11:36 And now there's just pandemonium on the field. The tackle is doing a dance in the end zone. Kevin Brown moving in the end zone, but we've got a little bit of confusion here, and it looks like the refs are going to say, yeah, Kevin got it. That makes it 47 to 19. With this extra point by Drew Katie, kicker extraordinaire, will make it 48 here. he's never missed this season with extra points I did not jinx him
Starting point is 02:12:19 that was tactical the cabosh you ask if I would do this for a living and my answer would be under the right circumstances I would rather spend a year trying to get a novel published
Starting point is 02:12:37 than I would a year trying to climb the ladder of of play-by-play announcing. If anyone's listening out there that owns a broadcasting company, I mean, I don't know. I mean, I'll think about it. But yes, like college game day, I mean, that's all me. I could get paid millions of dollars to talk about football
Starting point is 02:12:59 and act like a buffoon. Duh. I watched college game day for the first time this year earlier this morning. Awesome. It's, man, I forgot how much fun watching that show is. I haven't really watched it since Pat McAfee has been on there. It's been politically incorrect, but they just kind of like let it fly. Like James Franklin was on this morning.
Starting point is 02:13:20 Really? Nick Saban just said, dude, it was unfair. She shouldn't have gotten fired. Really? Yeah. So there's been some room to work at the college game day. You know what that? By Ruddy at the 15 makes one manness and he's thrown down.
Starting point is 02:13:34 And there's going to be a block in the back again from the Hillsdale Chargers. There's a flag at the 21-yard line. that's almost certainly going to take some yardage off of this return and the hill's tail sideline is just so deflated
Starting point is 02:13:52 where once at the end of the first half there was tons of momentum a lot of electricity on that sideline they are they are as first let me pull a question out of this magical deck of cards let's hear it you are hosting a dinner
Starting point is 02:14:08 you can invite Three people that are currently living to the dinner, who would you invite? Three people who are currently living. Yeah. To this dinner. Man. Do you want me to open it up to anybody in human history ever? No, no.
Starting point is 02:14:27 I'm curious to hear your answer first, then I'll give mine. Okay. You seem like you already have. I mean, I think Joe Rogan would be good. Shane Gillis. It's definitely going to be a funny dinner. give de guicheu up the middle and he gets out to the 25 to set up a second down in five at the charger 15 who else would I invite Shane gillis Joe Rogan wouldn't a Jordan Peterson dynamic really be funny that would be good that would be really good
Starting point is 02:15:03 second down in five chargers at their own 15 1035 and running in this ball game mccurton rolling right now moves back to the left another spin move makes one man miss at the 15 and he sprints out to the 24 yard line so a nice scamper there my mccurnon for a first down he had two receivers that he was eyeing on the left side of the field neither of them got open a meeting so he just sort of did it himself a 14 yard gain 14 yard gain for the sophomore he's in the shotgun geish you to his right standing to the far side carricone ready to the near side first down in 10 threat chargers are out thrown on 25 McCurnet, back to pass incomplete. He had ruddy
Starting point is 02:15:46 across the middle, open at the 50. A lot of green ahead. That would have been a house call. Three people. Three people. I have a funny answer. I'm going to give two answers. My first one I think would be
Starting point is 02:16:02 make sure to keep it appropriate. Of course. I'll give the answer after this play. McCurton. He's in the gun. Gishu to his right second down in 10 charges are thrown 25 motion from Davis McCurnin rolls to his left against the grain makes one man miss at the 20 still looking and throws it
Starting point is 02:16:24 underhand seems like he could have gotten at least a couple yards out of that side line I feel yeah he could have at least gotten one or two but he opts to throw the rock into the ocean and so it's now four down territory the chargers are oh sorry it's only third down you got three names Save him. We'll go with Donald Trump. We'll go with Donald Trump. Larry Arne and Pierce Lehman. Wow.
Starting point is 02:16:52 Would be the three that I would invite him. Third down in 10 for the Dale. They're at the run 25 motion from Davis-McKernan back to pass. Looking left throws caught by Stanton, but he's short of the first down by two yards. He's got out to the 39-yard line. That would be a dinner. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:17:14 That would be fun. I think if we opened up to anybody all time, now you're looking at Johnny Cash is going to be in there for sure. Billy Graham's probably going to be in there. Fourth down and one for the Chargers. 931 left. In the ball game, it's a little QB sneak, tush push, Philadelphia, Eagle style,
Starting point is 02:17:33 and I don't think they got it. A 96% success rate on QB Sneaks. And the Chargers did not get it. So the woes continue for the Hillsdale offense. And Northwood's going to take over inside Charger territory with 919 left in the game. I'm going to amend my answer. I'm going to kick Pierce out and I'm going to invite the Pope. Dr. Ron.
Starting point is 02:18:10 Pope Leo the 16th or 15th? Pope Leo the 14th. 14th, you're right. Dr. Vincenzi would not be happy that I forgot the number on that. 919 left in the ball game. We got a new QB in the game, so Ty's going to tell me who that is. While he gives it up to Brown, up the middle, and he gets about three to the 32-yard line. Number nine, Paul Seeley. Paul, where's Paul from? Paul is from Alma, Michigan, played at Hampstead Wofford High School.
Starting point is 02:18:43 Is that a big school? I've never heard of it. I know Alma is a Division III school, rather small school, with I think of a fairly successful football program a little bit north here in Michigan. I actually almost went there. Alma College? Alma College to play football, if you believe it. They offered you to play football.
Starting point is 02:19:04 They reached out to me. Really? So a shotgun for the new quarterback, and he gives it to Brown a huge collision in the hole between. Panola and Brown. Paul last name? Paul Seeley. Seeley. And now it's going to be running clock here.
Starting point is 02:19:25 I think both teams you're just going to want to get out of this game with no injuries and move on to next week. Third down for the Charger defense. 8.07 remaining in the ball game. Eight yards to go for. The Timberwolves. They lead Hillsdale 48 to 19. Seeley in the gun.
Starting point is 02:19:51 Brown to his left. Two receivers to the nearest side. One to the far. Brown, back to pass. Throws caught the 26-yard line. And that's going to be close to a first down. Fourth and about three. Seven.
Starting point is 02:20:07 Sixth on the plate. Well spotted at the 33-yard line. Four-found. Fourth down. Northwood's going to go for it. They've got two touchdowns on fourth downs. Sealy, in the gun. Brown 2 is right.
Starting point is 02:20:30 Two receivers to the far side, one to the near. Sealy, looking left. He's got a man downfield. Oh, that has to be PI. The receiver for the Timberwolves tripped at the 10 coverage for the Chargers got tangled up with them, but no call. kind of surprising there was no call
Starting point is 02:20:49 in that play. Yeah. So this is the Hillsdale offense now back on the field. Chargers back out on the field. We cut into this 26 point lead. Yeah. 48. Yeah. No. 29. 29 point lead.
Starting point is 02:21:09 You were going to say something. A lot of ground to make up. I was just going to say they're taking over about where they gave the ball up. So a quick turnaround for the chargers. McCurton, in the gun. Gishu, too, is right. Looking down field, he's got Carico down the middle. It's incomplete. Ball falls incomplete at the 35-yard line.
Starting point is 02:21:26 If McCurney would have thrown it earlier, I think he would have had Carico that was bifurcating the too high zone of the Timberwolf defense. So now second down in 10. Chargers at their own 28, 702 left in the ball. game. McCurn in the gun, Gishu, too is right, looking right, still in the pocket, throws out to Davis at the 28, makes a nice move. Another cut for the sophomore from Adrian. He just completed an interview with GM yesterday. He thinks he got the internship. Good for him. This things I don't even know as my brother's roommate. He said it went well. For a summer internship? That is correct.
Starting point is 02:22:18 Gets to stay in Michigan. Highly coveted. Detroit. Highly coveted internship. Oh, wow. Big finance guy. Ty. Ty knows something about highly coveted internships. Something. Heritage. Something about it.
Starting point is 02:22:33 Foundation. McCurton, in the gun. Gishu, two is left. 6.15 left in the ball game. McCurnan rolls against the grain, loops it over to runny to the 49. He's pushed out of bounds. And he went sliding into the track.
Starting point is 02:22:53 that could not have felt good really late pushes there from players along the sideline yeah there's been a lot of this game but the refs are sort of letting him play I heard I heard Tom Brady say so he said there
Starting point is 02:23:10 used to be defenders who would play to the echo of the whistle I think that's what we've seen a little bit today McCurnan in the gun Gishu two is left first down in 10 they're at the Timberwolf 43 pitch and catch out to Carico to the Timberwolf 26-yard line. First down for the Chargers.
Starting point is 02:23:33 Two nice throws from McCurnan. We got Metzger. Davis to the far side. It's not Skira. Carrico and Stanton to the nearest side. Back to pass is McCurnan. He overthrows Carrico. There had to have been some miscommunication on that play.
Starting point is 02:23:58 One of those option routes. Carraco maybe thought he had a hole at about 10-yard line, and McCurney wanted it all. So overthrown. Second down in 10. Chargers at the Timberwolf, 26. McCurnan, looking to the sideline, trying to get the play. We got trips to the near side.
Starting point is 02:24:21 Stanton to the far side. Geeshoe to the right of McCurnan. Second down in 10. McCurnan, looking left, throws in the flat to the freshman tied end. Carson Slocum, and he gets out to the 24-yard line. Third down in number two, I'm saying to Gary. Third down in eight. Chargers at Timberwold, 24.
Starting point is 02:24:50 We're inside of five minutes left in this ball game. and in the gun. Gishu to his right, stand to the near side. Davis, running to the far side. Sloke him in at tight end. Northwood, 48, Chargers 19, trying to cut into this 29 point deficit and flags fly on the field. False start on the offense. It has not been Hillsdale's day. More substitutions in the ball game. Now third down and 13.
Starting point is 02:25:39 at the Timberwolf, 29. McCurnan, in the gun. Looking right, rolls out. He's to the 35, fakes the run, fakes the throw, and he's going to sprint down to the 20, no, the 15-yard line. A little pump-fake from him, nice played. Move the chains.
Starting point is 02:25:57 Take a slide to avoid number five, good winners. Balls at the 15-yard line. Balls at the 15. Fresh set of downs for the charger offense. McCurnan in the gun Gishu to his left Ruddy the far side Kerricone Pratt to the near side McCurnaned back to pass
Starting point is 02:26:19 and he's sacked in the back field all the way back to the 25 there's a flag on the field looks like it's going to be defensive holding there was a lot of contact up top on that play and maybe even a hands to the face call
Starting point is 02:26:38 personal foul defense base for the place we have to do distance to the goal. First down. Half the distance to the goal for the Chargers and that'll put the ball at about the 7 yard line. The result of the pedal ball spotted at the 7.5 yard line in the first goal for the Chargers. Chargers need a score here. Get some nice positive momentum in the next week's game.
Starting point is 02:27:18 First down and ball at the Timberwolf 7. Motion from Slocum. McCurnet, back to pass. avoids one rush, rolls, throws while being tackled, and it's caught. With a flag in the end zone. Flag in the end zone, and the refs now conferring
Starting point is 02:27:36 whether that was a touchdown or not. Was an OPI on hill? Offensive pass interference on that play? Pass interference, offense, number 80. 15-year-divity, first down. Who was even the target on the play? I've never seen that.
Starting point is 02:27:55 You don't see offensive pass interference penalties a lot. I didn't see what Colin Davis was doing on that play, but I thought an unbelievable touchdown grab from Shane Reddy that just disappeared into the ether because of a penalty. Now from a first in goal to seven, it's first in goal to 23. McCurton, in the Gishu, 2 is right. Bunch formation to the nearest side. McCurnet back to pass looking looking he sat in the back field all the way back to the 33 yard line
Starting point is 02:28:34 second goal from the 30 first in goal from the seven becomes a second in goal from the 32 that's that might be a first 32 yards to try to cut into a 29 point lead McCurnin in the gun Gishu to his left. Kerrico, Matt's go to the far side. Skir to the nearest side. McCurnan flips it out to Gishu, and he gets rocked at the 26-yard line. And there's going to be a holding in the backfield. The Chargers are going to be pushed back.
Starting point is 02:29:15 The Hurden goal. Are going to be pushed back. From the 40-yard line. I think holding's a spot foul, right? Holding. Offense number 67. That powers declares. Third down.
Starting point is 02:29:30 Third down for the Chargers. Northwood coaching staff declined a second in 42, or second and goal from the 42 rather. So it'll be a third in goal from the 26. The most egregious I've ever seen was a fourth in 77. But I don't think I've ever seen third in goal from the 26. McCurran, Vinaghan, Gishu, to his left, Stand to the nearest side.
Starting point is 02:29:58 Keriko, ready to the far side. McCurn, a back to pass, looking right, looking, looking towards Carico's direction,
Starting point is 02:30:05 trying to look him in the corner of the end zone, incomplete. Overthrown at the back of the end zone, and it's fourth and 26. I mean, it might as well be four-down situation.
Starting point is 02:30:17 They're not going to kick a field goal, I wouldn't think. Fourth down and goal. Chargers at the Northward. Wood 26-yard line, 215 left in the ball game. Northwood leads Hillsdale.
Starting point is 02:30:34 48 to 19. McCurnan in the gun, Gishu to his right, motion from Sloakum. McCurnan, back to pass, rolling right, looking, looking. He's at his own 30, trying to stay behind the line of scrimmage
Starting point is 02:30:49 and he throws to running and it falls incomplete out of bounds. So a turnover on downs. From the judge. Charger 26-yard line. And all energy has been deflated out of this place. So we'll see what the Hillsdale defense can do here. Give DeBrown running left, and he's hit by crew of chargers at the 30. So it'll be second down in about six.
Starting point is 02:31:39 Two-minute timeout, and you know what? We'll take a two-minute time-out with him. Well, not two-minute time-out. We'll take a time out with him. He'll listen to Charger football right here. on Radio Free Hillsdale. News twice an hour, every hour from SRN News. Catch up

On Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Hey, did you hear what happened in the news this week? Oh, you mean that thing the president posted?
Starting point is 02:32:41 No, what really happened? If you want to find out what really happened in the news this week, stay tuned for Under the Radar on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside an East High Ruddy. Hill Trails Northwood 48 to 19. A buck 55 left in this ball game.
Starting point is 02:33:04 Paul Seeley in the game for the Timberwolves to... Well, just close out this victory. Northwood's going to improve to 6 and 1 on the year. You're going to have a pretty tough backstretch of the schedule. Well, they'll have to play Tiffin and Finley. And Walsh in Kentucky Wesleyan. That is a gauntlet. Wow.
Starting point is 02:33:28 While Hillsdale is going to run into Lake Erie, Thomas More, Walsh, and Ohio, Dominican. So a little more manageable for the Chargers, but they're going to have to play a lot cleaner than this to start winning games in the GMAC in the second phase of the season, which they've been done a lot, actually, the past two years. The second half of the season's been excellent for them. So that will be interesting to see. but a tough performance here today from the Chargers and a phenomenal performance from Northwood probably more so Northwood just played a really good ball game on all phases of the game still no turnovers from that from that offense no interceptions from their quarterback Haiti Hamby Ethan Hamby no interception no I'm seven games six games
Starting point is 02:34:21 impressive stat there so as we mentioned next one week. Northwood is going to go on the road to Owensboro, Kentucky to play Kentucky Wesleyan. And, well, Hillsdale will be right here next week for Lake Erie. That's a 2.30 start time, so a little bit later. But we've got, man, do I love college football? And I'm serious about that. There's a good slate tonight.
Starting point is 02:34:53 there's a good slate tonight i saw Tennessee Alabama Tennessee Alabama Notre Dame USC USC Land Delight Hendon Hooker 2022 game was unbelievable
Starting point is 02:35:07 And from that moment on That's been a rivalry I mean it really shouldn't but yeah like it created a rivalry out of nothing right Certainly helps that Nick Sabin no longer coaches at Alabama
Starting point is 02:35:18 But that has been a rivalry of sorts in the past couple years I saw Georgia is playing old miss today too so that'll be a good game good slate coming up today in the gun brown to his right two receivers to the far side he throws nice pitching catch from the backup qb and he moves the chains ryan ruddy on the coverage so tonight i will probably just go to a nice cool place and just watch college football and I mean, it looks like that'll be ending it.
Starting point is 02:35:56 Ethan Hamby comes back out and it's going to take a knee and take us. Well, through the third home game of the year of the Chargers. Two more, folks. We'll be here next week against calling the game against Lake Erie right here at Frank Muddywater Stadium. You're listening to 101.7 Radio Free Hillsdale. Thank you all. I'm Ted. He's tie.
