Starting point is 00:00:03 The following is a presentation of WRFH sports. Game day is here. The players are ready. The fans are ready. This is Charger football. Ruddy's standing at his own 35. He's initially hit up a 35, but they got room. He's going to go.
Starting point is 00:00:23 He's a 50. One man to beat. See a leader. Touchdown Chargers. Cook back to fast. He's back to the backfield. Badger again. Badger on the sack, receives it at the charger.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Ten, he has some room and a burst of speed. Make the kick or miss at the 50, 30, 20, 15, 10, touchdown chargers. McCurn and in the gun, it's not a game. It's not thrown to Rennie. It's caught at the 45. He's to the 40. 35, 30, 20, 10, 5. Touchdown.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Chargers. Hillsdale Charger football on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM, starts now. Welcome in to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower for the homecoming matchup between the Hillsdale College Chargers and the Walsh Cavaliers. We apologize for coming on to the air late. We had some technical difficulties, but now hopefully we are up and running. Hillsdale leads Walsh 7 to nothing in electric field. 55-yard touchdown reception by Shea Ruddy.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Great throw by Eli Boyce. And now we will see these Walsh Cavaliers. And their first drive of the year, they're four and one in the GMAC. Last week, they had a tough loss at Thomas Moore. Hillsdale, on the other hand, is also four-and-one. They defeated Lake Erie 29 to 9. So we have two teams with the same record. records and we will see who will come out on top.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Now, two years ago, Hillsdale played Walsh for the homecoming game. They lost 35, 36 in overtime, so we'll see if they get some redemption air. Third down in two for Walsh on their first possession of the game. Ball spotted at the Walsh 33. It's a give up the middle. And I don't think the running back got to the line to gain. Jake Gill on the carry there. Redshirt Jr. out of Crest in Ohio.
Starting point is 00:02:41 That main running back for this Walsh running attack. So we'll see if they're going to punt this one away. And yes, Walsh will punt this one to the awaiting arms of Shea Ruddy, the electric special team's player for this Charger team. Ruddy standing all the way back at his own 23 yard line 1044 left in the first quarter. It's a low punt. It's going to bounce at the Hillsdale 41 and trickle out of bounds at the 32 yard line. So as I already mentioned, Hillsdale leads Walsh 7 to nothing.
Starting point is 00:03:26 10, 35 left in the first quarter. We saw Eli Boyce start out the game and he's going to also trot out. here for the second possession. So maybe the Chargers are going away from the two quarterback system between him and Colin McCurnan. It sure seems like that, especially to start the game, seeing two straight series from Eli Boyce. Definitely the more accurate passer of the two,
Starting point is 00:03:50 and we saw that on display, a crucial third down pickup by Boyce, and then the 55-yard dime to Shea Ruddy. First down in 10 for the Chargers at the 33. It's a give-doing Gishu up the middle. He gets to the 39-yard line. It was a tough play to miss, Carson, on that last possession. Just a beautiful throw from Eli Boyce across the field all the way to the far side. Great grab by Ruddy and he just sprinted to the end zone.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Showing off some arm strength from Boyce native out of Holland, Michigan. He's known for more the dual threat quarterback for this charger off. At second down and four for Hillsdale at their own 39. It's a give to Ingeishu up the middle. and he fights to the 44. Yard line of Hillsdale. It's been a fantastic start for the Hillsdale Chargers on both side of the ball, kind of having their way at the line of scrimmage.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Huge stop on third and two for that Walsh. Offense brought pressure up the left side of the defensive line and got home, dropping him short, and now controlling it in the run game to start the second offensive drive. First down in 10 for the charge. They're at their own 44. Boyce under center. Motion from Ruddy from left to right. It's a give to Ruddy running left.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And he's hit out of bounds at the 45-yard line. A little end around there from Shea Ruddy. He had three touchdowns last week against Lake Erie, 120 yards receiving. Just the main guy on this offense, really the feature player for Hillsdale. and he's looking to go to medical school. So I know he has some upcoming interviews with Michigan State and some other big med school. So that's neat as well. Second down in nine.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Boyce back to pass. Looking, looking. Now he's going to roll to his rights. He's pressured, but he's going to get away from the pressure. And then finally brought down inside a Walsh territory at the 48-yard line, showing that athleticism there from Eli. Boyce. Nice job from him. Sure felt like they had him dead their rights around the line of scrimmage.
Starting point is 00:06:03 but Boyce stumbled, fell forward, bringing up third and short, opening up the playbook a lot more for this Charger offense. Going back to that second downplay, as you mentioned, Chey Ruddy is kind of the guy to watch all day. And as soon as you put him in motion, all of the Walsh defensive backs keyed in on him. Third down and two for Hillsdale at the Walsh, 48. It's a run all the way up the middle for Boyce, and he's not going to get it. Great stop there from Luke Dobbins, 6-2-220-pound inside linebacker for this Cavalier squad. And that will bring up a fourth and two in decision time for Coach Schreffler. And Schreffler is going to punt this one away.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Ian Woodyard for the Chargers is going to try to pin the Cavaliers back. Deep Ryan Page is the returner. for Walsh. Now, I was looking at the scouting report, and Carson, you might have to update the audience, but there's an Ohio State grad transfer on this Walsh team as the punt bounces inside the 15 down at the 14-yard line. Yeah, on this Walsh offense, you pointed out to me in the little booklet that there's a there's a grad transfer from Ohio State playing in this game. wide receiver, Sean Lodge. And then when you see an Ohio State transfer at the D2 level,
Starting point is 00:07:38 you're kind of like, I wonder how this guy really fared at the D1 level. But he actually had 20 receptions for over 200 receiving yards during his career at Ohio State. So probably going to have to have someone rolled over the top of him most of the day. Wicker in the gun, Gibbons to his right. It's a throw and it's going to fall incomplete on that first down in 10. Walsh. trying to get some points on the board as they're trailing hillsdale seven and nothing they're going to set up shop on their own 15 yard lines second down in 10 710 left in the first quarter wickered in the gun gill in the back field with him two receivers in near side one of the far it's to give to gill and he's initially stopped the line of scrimmage and then breaks it outside to the 20 yard line great run there for the junior running back he's
Starting point is 00:08:32 He's going to make it third in about five. Yeah, you really feel like Walsh has to get something going here with that explosive charger touchdown and then pinning them back at their own 15, but that's a great run to make it third. Very manageable for this Walsh offense. Enties head on this third down in five for Walsh. Wicker in the gun, looking to his right, chukes out Evan Bienek. He's going to throw down field and incomplete. Nice QB pressure there from Bionick.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Hudson Jones also in on that play to hurry the quarterback, and it's going to be another punt from Walsh. And Ruddy comes out on the field for the Chargers. To return this punt, he'll be standing at his own 35. Yeah, it looked like Hayden Wickard had a lot of room to maybe run and pick up that first down, but he looked almost scared to run at one of your favorite players there, Luke Panola. for the charges. So yeah,
Starting point is 00:09:34 big beer span for those years. It's a decent punt. It's going to bounce at the 45-yard line. Ruddy backs away from it, and now the ball trickles down to the 36.
Starting point is 00:09:48 And Eli, voice, is still the quarterback here for Hillsdale, third possession of the game for Hillsdale. 622 left in the first quarter.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Hillsdale leads Walsh, six, no, seven to nothing. And this field last night was in use. We'll have to update you on some of that. The Fred V. Fundy match up that Carson Brower was a quarterback in for flag football. We'll tell you about that as the show goes on. First down in 10 for the Chargers, pass intended for Shea Ruddy. Ball falls incomplete.
Starting point is 00:10:25 A little inside and low there. And now it's a second down in 10. Chargers at their own 41. I like what I'm seeing from this charger offense. They had one good drive. The second one resulted in a pun. But I like how they're taking their time, calling the plays they want to play,
Starting point is 00:10:42 and get into the line of scrimmage and really executing. That was a great route by Ruddy. He was open. Boyce just missed him a little bit. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, Ruddy to the nearest side, Carrick-O and Stanton to the far. Second down in 10.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Boyce is going to run it up the middle. Call his own number. and he fights to the 45-yard line. And that quarterback keeper is going to have a gain of nine and set up third down in short. Third down and about a yard. There's a couple explosive runs here from Boyce to get the game started, really showing off the agility, making a couple defenders miss.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Third and manageable is going to be huge today for the Chargers. Keep the playbook open. Maybe take those shots downfield. say ready like we saw on that first drive. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, third down in one for Hillsdale. At their own 45, motion from ready from right to left. It's a quarterback
Starting point is 00:11:39 run to the right. Boyce cuts it up looking for that first down and he's got it out to midfield. Excellent blocking there from that charger offensive line. And that's another first down
Starting point is 00:11:55 for this Hillsdale offense. Yeah, great play from the left side of that line there. Ethan Josah and Josh Holba getting out maintaining their blocks, just creating a little bit of a gap so that Boyce could fall forward for that first down. First down and 10 for Hillsdale at midfield.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Boyce in the gun and Gishu to his right. Play action. Boyce looking for Ruddy down the field. Now he's surveying his options rolling to his right and he's just going to run for it. And a huge hit at the 46-yard line of
Starting point is 00:12:25 into Walsh territory. and Boyce gets up under his own power, so he's okay. But boy, oh, boy, was that a collision? You love to see your quarterback pop right back up after that. It shows he's got the adrenaline going, and he's excited for the game. But man, was that a hit? You could almost hear it all the way up here in the box. Kind of see why you have quarterback sliding so much nowadays.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Second down in six for Hillsdale. They're at the Walsh, 46. Boyce in the gunning. He's right. Skir to the far side. Metzger to the near. It's a give to Enkishu running left. And he gets out to the 39-yard line.
Starting point is 00:13:05 And that's another first down. Move those chains. It's rarely ever the first guy that gets being Ben to Gishu that brings him down. Probably three or four broken tackles there. Couple Walsh defensive linemen punching at the ball as well. But Ingishu, which is powerful run,
Starting point is 00:13:23 driving those legs to get another first down. In Gishu, the sophomore, from Texas really does well with patience in the hole waiting for his blocks to develop. First down and 10 for Hillsdale at the Walsh 38, boys in the gun. Hayward to his right to give to Hayward. And Blake gets to the 37-yard line. So only a one-yard gain on first down. It is homecoming today, and I have to say I must give a shout out to Mother and A.
Starting point is 00:13:57 chair. It's a beautiful weather here in south central Michigan. 72 degrees. A little breeze and sun. It's perfect football weather. And you can see it from the amount of students they even turned up to watch this game. Everyone's excited for Charger football. Second down in nine, boys back to pass. He throws out to Rabido at the 29 yard line. And Rabido gets down to the 26 of Walsh. So here we go. Hillsdale doing a nice job mixing up the play calls. 50% run, 50% pass so far, taking advantage of those soft spots and that zone defense of this Walsh secondary. And as the clock is ticking down here,
Starting point is 00:14:46 the first quarter is almost done in a blink of an eye when the offensive possession just keeps chugging along. It eats up much of the clock. First down at 10 for Hillsdale at the Walsh 26. Boyce back to pass, and he's going to move up in the pocket. Makes one man miss at the 24, and that's enough for a first down inside the 15. And the junior quarterback is showing some elusiveness there. Boyce being a little reckless with that ball, but it sure was flashy.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Pops the ball up over the linebacker's head, makes it miss, makes another man miss, really seeing some explosive plays. And by running the ball, they're keeping the clock moving. has now covered six minutes of game time and the charger offense has kind of just had their way. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at the Walsh 12. Boyce in the gun, Gishe, two is right. Metzger and score to the far side, ready to near. It's a quarterback run all the way and Boyce is inside the five.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Even with that 55-yard pitch and catch to Shea ready to open the first quarter, Eli Boyce might now have more rushing yards than passing yards. which is just a testament to the dual threat nature of his quarterback play. And it's really impressive for this Hillsdale offense that of recent years been stagnant, but this year pretty explosive. 106 left in the first quarter. Second down in one. Ball at the Walsh three.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Boyce in the gunny. He's shoot to his right. Ruddy motions from right to left. Scur to the far side. Boyce back to pass looking for Ruddy. Now he's going to throw into the end zone. It's tipped up and falls incomplete. Andrew Kinesny, the tight end for that charger offense, it ricocheted off his arm, went up in the air,
Starting point is 00:16:39 and then as he was laying on the ground, he had another chance of reeling it in. Those are the sorts of plays that kind of make your heart stop for just a second. Andrew Kinesne did great to get a hand up on that ball, almost reeled it in, but instead it's batted up in the air. You see two D.Bs converging on it, it falls between them and almost right into the lap of Andrew Kinesney. seconds left in the first quarter. Hillsdale leads Walsh. 7-0. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, motion from ready from left to right. Ball is at the Walsh two, and it's a quarterback run all the way. And that's a touchdown for Hillsdale to make it 13 and nothing. Eli Boyce with the touchdown run and Boyle Boy on that possession.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Eli Boyce with some really nice throws and nifty runs to really jumpstart this. drive. Now Dylan to Dario to attempt the extra point. Scuro to hold. Likens to snap. Good snap, good hold. Kick is up. And it's good. Hillsdale 14 Walsh, nothing. You're listening to Charge your football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time. I'm Lauren Smith, and I'm here to talk about how to make comparisons. How do you know whether to form a comparative adjective by adding more before the word or ER afterward? Is it livelier or more lively? The rule is a little complicated and it depends on how many syllables the original word has. For adjectives of one syllable, add ER.
Starting point is 00:18:22 For adjectives with multiple syllables, add more if the word doesn't end in Y. If it does end in Y, change the Y to I and add ER. This is obvious most of the time. You can generally tell just by looking if there's a mistake, but here are a few examples to show where things can go awry. Funnier is correct and more funny is wrong. Thinner is correct and more thin is wrong. Weirder is correct and more weird is wrong. That's your grammar minute on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower. Hillsdale leads Walsh 14 to nothing on this homecoming matchup between these two G-Mac foes. 43 seconds left in the first quarter. It's been all Hillsdale so far. First touchdown of the game was a 55-yard touchdown reception from Shea Ruddy. And then just moment to go. Eli Boyce with a three-yard touchdown run for him, called his own number.
Starting point is 00:19:33 and that's how we're at 14 to nothing. Looks like we have a new quarterback in the game for Walsh now. The Cavalier starting their possession at their own 25. And no gain on first down for that quarterback run. It's going to bring up second down in about nine. The new quarterback is Brendan Zerbrug. 6, 390-pound junior out of Alliance, Ohio. And with 19 seconds left in running in this first quarter,
Starting point is 00:20:06 this might be the last play of the first quarter. Zeebrook, it's a give jet sweep. And Jonah Jensen on the tackle at the 28-yard line, and that will be the final play of the first quarter. Hillsdale, 14, Walsh, nothing. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. In 1492, Columbus set sail from Spain to make the discovery of a lifetime. Rememned we sail if at dawn, gentlemen.
Starting point is 00:20:46 After 70 days sailing the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Land ho! History remembers this as Mr. Columbus's greatest discovery. But... Sir, the islanders want to show you something. They call it a radio. Little had Columbus known. The islanders had been tuning into Radio Free Hillsdale for years.
Starting point is 00:21:13 You mean to tell me we could listen to this anywhere, so long as we had Radio Free Hillsdale? Columbus's greatest discovery was made. Yet, on the return journey, he forgot to record the channel number. Don't make the same mistake. Tune into Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Discovery comes to you. Welcome back to Frank Buddywater Stadium.
Starting point is 00:21:42 I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower. Third down and seven for this Walsh Cavalier offense. Zerbug in the gun, looking to his right, and the ball falls incomplete at the Cavalier 38. And they're going to have to come on and punt this one away, and that brings out Shea Ruddy. Every time he's on the field for any kind of special teams play, we have to mention his name.
Starting point is 00:22:07 He's considered one of the best special teams players in all of D2. He's standing at his own 30-yard line. Jake Gill to... No, correction. Andrew Carnara, to kick this one away, he's standing at his own 14. So far, the Walsh offense has been struggling when facing that Hillsdale.
Starting point is 00:22:36 defense. It's a good punt. Ruddy will have a chance to try to run this one back. He's at the 25, weaving to the 30, gets a nice block at the 40, and sprints out to the 44-yard line. And so it'll be phenomenal field position for Hillsdale. As you all already know, I'm a Nebraska native, which means I'm a part of the Nebraska football cult and they're playing. The number seven ranked Hoosiers of Indiana. They're leading them right now. end of the third quarter, 10 to 6. They have the ball. So I will have to keep you updated.
Starting point is 00:23:12 You all will probably witness the usual five steps of discontentment as a Husker player. Your hopes get really high and then they're demolished. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own 45. It's a pitch outside to Inkeshoe and he cuts it up and gets inside of Walsh territory down to the 48-yard line. Nebraska's 0-in-30 against top 12. 25 ranked teams. The last time they beat, a ranked opponent was in 2016 against 22nd ranked Oregon.
Starting point is 00:23:45 2016, I was in sixth grade. So if something could happen today, that would be great against the defending national champs. Second down in three, four Hillsdale. They're at the Walsh, 48, and timeout called by the Chargers. It looked like it was a wildcat look from Ruddy is that coaching staff is trying to use creative ways to get the ball into Ruddy's hands. Now, Indiana had a seven and a half. Well, the line was seven and a half. Indiana was favored.
Starting point is 00:24:22 So Nebraska could still cover and lose, but I don't care about the line anymore. I want a victory. It sure would be a statement win for the Cornhuskers, especially getting to the end of the third quarter winning. That's fantastic. I feel like there might be a little bit of frustration coming out, maybe playing with a little bit of extra intensity after not being ranked after being 5 and O. You just really don't see that from Power Conference teams.
Starting point is 00:24:46 The last time the SEC had a team go 5 and O and become unranked was 1943. It feels like it's a little bit of disrespect to a historically great Cornhuskers. They were great in the 90s, three national championships, and since then it's just been not good. overall. They can compete in the close games, but they can't win right now. So we'll see if they can change that
Starting point is 00:25:17 as one of their wide receivers had a false start on the prior play and they have to punt it away. It's unfortunate. Unfortunate. So here we go. Second down in three for Hillsdale. They're at the Walsh 43. It's Wildcat look and it's a gift to Carrico. He's running.
Starting point is 00:25:34 running to the left and inside the 35 yard line. Beautiful play call there on that timeout. I think everybody in the stadium thought Ruddy was going to run to the right. As Carico unfortunately comes off the field with an injury. So we hope he's okay. Looks like just a little bit of a stinger from how he's holding his hand. should probably be good to go back in in a few plays from the looks of it.
Starting point is 00:26:07 First down in 10 for Hillsdale at the Walsh 32. It's Wildcat look from Reddy. He's running to the right. And he's going to get hit down at the 31-yard line. So two consecutive Wildcat looks from Hillsdale. And now Eli Boyce is going to come out. So the quarterback, the normal quarterback is back in the ball game. Hillsdale 14, Walsh, nothing, 13.
Starting point is 00:26:32 minutes left in the second quarter. Phenomenal crowd here from the Hillsdale Faithful. The student section is packed. Second down in nine, ball at the Walsh, 31, Boyce in the gun, looking towards Scura. Scura catches it at the 15 and gets down to the 14-yard line. Nice job from him, and so far, Eli Boyce is really showing off his arm. armed talent throughout this first half. This could be really, really be a big statement win for these Hillsdale Chargers.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Northwood atop the conference, Hillsdale's only lost, and then a four-way tie at four-in-one behind them. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at the Wall, 16. Quarterback run to the right for boys. Makes a nice cut. And he gets hit down at the four-yard line. Yes. This Hillsdale College football team is for real, folks.
Starting point is 00:27:36 I mean, Northwood now is the top 15 team in all of D2, Hillsdale, lost to them a few weeks ago, 7 to 10, and had a chance at a game-tying field goal. Walsh was ranked last week at 24 in the country, and Hillsdale so far is dominating them. First and goal for the Chargers. They're at the Walsh 3. It's a give, no, it's play action for Boyce.
Starting point is 00:28:04 He's going to throw it out to Ruddy. That's a touchdown for the Chargers. You just can't find a single DB who can stay with Shea Ruddy. Boy, oh boy. Dr. Ard would be proud of that route from Ruddy. He went flaring out in the flat and caught the ball right on the goal line. And now it's 20 to nothing. It's been a very technical start to this game from Eli Boyce.
Starting point is 00:28:35 really sound two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and awaiting this kick for a 21-0 nothing lead. And DeDario's kick is good. Hillsdale 21 Walsh, nothing. Welcome to the World Outside on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we explore fascinating events and culture in foreign countries. Turn in your Atlas to Switzerland and Europe. Just like here in the U.S., the Swiss town of Richter's Will loves to carve jacko lanterns every fall.
Starting point is 00:29:18 But there's a twist. They carve not pumpkins, but radishes. The tradition comes from the mid-1800s when local wives reportedly carved turnips as lanterns to light the way home from evening church. Today, every second Saturday in November, Rister's Will celebrates the Turnip Festival, or locals parade their carvings around town to celebrate the harvest.
Starting point is 00:29:42 That's all for now. I'm Jonathan Taylor on The World Outside for Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Keep exploring God's fascinating world. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower. Dylan Dadario's going to squib this squib kick in. and Walsh will have decent field position at their own 42-yard line. 1129 left in this first half.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Now, as I mentioned, my color commentator, Carson Brower, was quarterback last night for the Frat v. Fundy matchup, the third annual game put on by campus rec. It's a flag football event between the Independence and the fraternity brothers. And unfortunately, Carson Brower's team lost 14 to 34, but it was close. As Whitaker gives it to kill up the middle to the 42-yard line. You surprised me. You're pretty athletic guy, not going to lie. You had some nice throws.
Starting point is 00:30:53 You were flushed out of the pocket. You stayed calm and collected. But I think overall, it was just some unfortunate mistakes by some of the fun. As the independents are known as Fundy's around here, and the frats just kind of got away with it. So Whitaker, back to pass. He's going to throw to gill out in the flat. The ball falls incomplete at the 38.
Starting point is 00:31:18 I must say, coach Van Cat, correct? Yes. Dialed up a blitz on the two-yard line that got you guys his safety with about five minutes left. That was quite impressive. We come over to the sideline, and senior Luke Jones goes, we're getting the safety right here.
Starting point is 00:31:34 And then sure enough, We pulled the flag in the end zone and then punched. We did not score on that drive, but definitely was a big momentum moment for us. Third down in 10, Whitaker back to pass. And it's the exact same play from the previous snap. It was a throwout to Gill in the flat and it falls incomplete and they're going to have to punt this one away. I feel like I just watched the same play on repeat.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Just got an instant replay. It just hit his left hand. and then just fell incomplete. This Walsh offense really has nothing, even for their best field position of the day. Canara is going to have to punt this one away, standing at his own 28. Ruddyback deep to receive this punt.
Starting point is 00:32:26 He's waiting at the Charger 19, 10.51 left in the first half. Hillsdale 21. Walsh, nothing. It's a good punt. Fair caught by. Ruddy and then Muffed before Ruddy gets back on top of it at the 14-yard line.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Really weird rotation on that punt and it seemed like the wind might have played a factor as it's picked up a little bit and the sun's gone behind in the clouds but Ruddy gets on the ball before disaster
Starting point is 00:32:59 for any kickers listening to the show that looks sort of like an X ball that's like not the ball you want to kick on a field goal but it sure makes punts hard to catch especially when it goes higher than the muddy water stadium roof first down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own 14
Starting point is 00:33:14 Boyce in the gun and Heshoe to his right looking towards Ruddy now Caracow running down the sidelines and Boyce is going to throw this one away it looked like Hillsdale was going to try to have some trickery here
Starting point is 00:33:30 fake the screen to Ruddy and then have Kariko goes streaking down the sidelines on a fly route, but Walsh was not fooled there. A lot of these plays on his charge, your offense, the quarterbacks have options and progressions, but nice shot by boys there to not throw that screen. He would have put Ruddy in a difficult situation.
Starting point is 00:33:56 Second down 10 for Hillsdale. They're at their own 14. Boys in the Gunning, Gishu 2 is right. Play action. Throw out to Ruddy at the 18. and that's a five-yard gain to the 19 of Hillsdale, rather. And it'll set up third down and five. One thing I've been really impressed with, even though the score is 21-0 by this Walsh defense,
Starting point is 00:34:21 is the open field tackling. It sure feels like these D-Bs, when they're the first to the play, they're bringing the man down and not really giving up too many yards after the catch. Third down in five, 10 minutes left in the first half. Boyce in the gunning, Gisha 2 is right, Boyce back to pass, looking for Ruddy at the 25, and he sprints out of bounds of the 29-yard line.
Starting point is 00:34:42 Move those chains, that's enough for a first down. So far, Ruddy might be on track for 30 touches in today's matchup. I would guesstimate he already has about 10. I would say
Starting point is 00:34:58 they've given him a couple carries, if you count the punt returns and kick returns, and then probably five or six, receptions. So definitely trying to make their impact player involved. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own 30 to give to Ingeishu running right and
Starting point is 00:35:14 he's brought down at the line of scrimmage. That'll set up a second down and 10. So Kara goes okay. That's great news for this charger offense as Blake
Starting point is 00:35:32 Hayward and Shay Ruddy check in. Jonathan Metzger checks out. Second down in nine. So In Gishu had a one-yard gain on that previous run. Chargers at their own 31 trying to add to this 21-nothing lead. Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right. Play action, Boyce rolling to his right at his own 23, throws to run at the 40. And Shea is brought down at the 45-yard line. Another first down grab for the senior from Temperance, Michigan.
Starting point is 00:36:11 Shea Ruddy had two receptions and one carry in the first quarter, but it sure feels like there's been an uptick in his usage. But on a day where the score is 21-0 with eight and a half minutes left in the first half, it just feels like everyone's getting a lot of touches. And the time of possession is very heavily favored to the Hillsdale Chargers. First down in 10, it's a give to Hayward up the middle. to the Hillsdale 48 yard line. And we're already under eight minutes left in the first half.
Starting point is 00:36:45 As Connor Vermeulen checks in for the Chargers at the running back position. Second down in seven for Hillsdale. They're at the throne 48, Walsh defense trying to stand, stand strong. Boyce in the gun, Vermeulen to his left, Stanton to the nearer. motion from Caracow from right to left. And he's immediately hitting the backfield, but he gets away from it. And he runs into Walsh territory. Athletic running there from the junior from Owensboro, Kentucky, creating something out of nothing.
Starting point is 00:37:21 Wow, what a play there from Tuck Carico. He was like dead to rights wrapped up in the backfield. Quick little spin move, evade, and then turned up field and exploded field. for that first down. Really an awesome carry and a little bit of trickery is. You see the eyes go to Shea Reddy, but the ball goes to tuck Caracow. First down in 10 for Hillsdale. They're at the Walsh 42, Boyce Under Center and Gishoe in the backfield.
Starting point is 00:37:48 Play action, voice rolling to his right. He's got Stanton down the field, and it's a diving. A tent to there from Stanton at the Walsh 12. That would have been a monstrous play. but the ball falls incomplete. Great coverage from the Walsh defensive back. Torel Greer. Kind of had Stanton blanketed.
Starting point is 00:38:11 Good throw, good effort at the catch, but just good coverage over the back end of that play from the Walsh defense. Second down in 10, four Hillsdale. Chargers at the Walsh, 42. 6.56 left in the first half. Carrick Owens and Stanton to the nearest side.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Boyce, back to pass. Looking for Davis, and the ball falls incomplete. Colleen Davis, a tight end from Adrian, Michigan. The ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage, and it falls incomplete. It looked like they had enough for a first down if that ball hadn't been tipped. So great play from the defensive line of Walsh. Just a little quick flip over the top from Boyce. Just exposing that spot right behind those linebackers.
Starting point is 00:38:59 Third down in 10. Chargers at the Walsh, 42, Boyce in the gun, Hayward to his right, Metzgeron, ruddy to the near side, Carico to the far. Boyce, back to pass, looking across the middle, it's caught by Carrico at the 40, and he weaves around to the outside and brought down at the 22-yard line. Great yard after catch there, yards after catch there for Tut Carrico. Cover zero there from the Walsh defense, bringing everyone trying to try to. to get home on voice forced the ball out pitches it about two yards short two yards from the line of
Starting point is 00:39:37 of scrimmage but then tuck carrico does the rest making one man miss and then exploding up field putting them on the edge of the red zone first down in 10 four hillsdale they're at the cavalier 22 trying to add to this 21 nothing lead over walsh on this homecoming game boys in the gun vermilin to his right boys looking to his left past intended for Jonathan Metzger, but the ball is throwing a little low. And that'll bring up second down in 10. Donovan Detweiler from that Walsh secondary. Got a hand in there.
Starting point is 00:40:14 There's a good ball. Good play design. That ball came out before Metzger even looked back for it. And then just a great play from the DB to dive and get that pass breakup. Second down in 10, four hillsdale. They're still at the Walsh, 22, Boyce in the gun, Vermeulen to his left, Karatko to the far side. It's a quarterback run.
Starting point is 00:40:37 No, Boyce is going to throw it back across the field to Kinesny, and Kinesny reaches across the goal line, but he's called down at the one. What an effort. Those are the plays you wish you could see on instant replay. Kinesny goes full extension with a man around his waist, and comes up just a little bit short. First and goal from the one for the Hillsdale Charger offense.
Starting point is 00:41:05 First and goal from the one for the Chargers. And we'll see if they can punch it in here to make it a four-score game. I formation. Boyce under center to QB sneak all the way. A little touch push. And it's a touchdown for Hillsdale. Chargers now have 27 points. to the Cavaliers
Starting point is 00:41:35 nothing points and now Dylan DeDario comes on to kick the extra point to make it 28 Neil Likins to snap scurro to hold Nebraska Cornhuskers
Starting point is 00:41:50 just scored on the Indiana Hoosiers so they lead them 17 to 6 could this be the year that the 30 game streak continues against ranked opponents finally is broken.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Hillsdale, 28, Walsh, nothing. 509 left in the second quarter. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Fox on Football. I'm Frank Lanzup. Week 5 of the NFL, we kick things off Sunday morning in London. It's the Eagles battling the Jaguars.
Starting point is 00:42:29 In the early games, Joe Burrow and the Bengals are in Miami against the Dolphins. Drake May and the Patriots host the Raiders. In New Orleans, the Saints entertain the undefeated Vikings. The New York Jets play host to the Cleveland Browns. Aaron Rogers and the Steelers host the cults. The windless Texans are on the road in Tennessee against the Titans.
Starting point is 00:42:50 The Giants are in Washington against the commanders. And the Bears are on the road in Green Bay against the Packers. In the late games, the Broncos traveled to L.A. to face the Chargers. The Lions battle the Cardinals in Arizona. The undefeated 49ers take on the defending Super Bowl. champion Seahawks in Seattle. Sunday night, the Ravens without Lamar Jackson will battle the Atlanta Falcons, Monday night football, bills and Rams in L.A.
Starting point is 00:43:14 Frank Lanzum, Fox News. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the beautiful campus of Hillsdale College. Dylan Dadario kicks this one away for Hillsdale and a nice return from Walsh before Scott Eaton brings him down at the Walsh 33. So Hillsdale leads the Walsh Cavaliers, 28 to nothing on this homecoming game. 504 left in the first half. It's been very clinical from the Hillsdale Chargers on both sides of the ball and even special teams, starting with great field position, punching in when necessary,
Starting point is 00:44:00 and getting stops on every Walsh drives thus far. So it's our first down in 10 for the Cavaliers. gives it to Gill and he runs up the middle to the 38-yard line. Luke Panola there on the tackle. And it's really great news for the Chargers to have Jacob Vance back, the fifth-year-senior, one of the G-Mack pre-season linebackers of the year. And that linebacker core for the Chargers is one of the best in all of D-2, second down in about five for, and company. He rolls out to his left and he's pressured by Drake Badger.
Starting point is 00:44:41 And the ball falls incomplete, but there's a penalty marker at the 34-yard line of Walsh. Looks like it's going to be a hold on the Walsh offensive line. Full rush from the right side just pancakes the Walsh offensive linemen and then just holds Jaden Nogorre as he tries to get up. When the official took the flag out of his pocket, it even hit Matthew McElroy in the helmet. Wonder if that's why he didn't get home with the quarterback, but still, a 10-yard penalty nonetheless.
Starting point is 00:45:25 So that will make it a second down in 15. Wicker in the gun, Gill to his right, three receivers to the near side, one to the far. Wicker back to pass, rolling to his left. He's going to launch it downfield, a looping ball, and the ball falls incomplete, but there's a penalty marker at the Hillsdale 29. Andrew McCarthy looked like he just got a little handsy there, a handful of Jersey, and that's why the penalty marker came out.
Starting point is 00:45:59 Sideline judge right there to make the call. And that will put it at the spot of the foul. believe they got to figure out well it looks like we're finally figuring it out where to actually spot the ball no I am wrong it's just enough for a first down I was always under the impression that if the pass interference
Starting point is 00:46:26 occurs beyond 15 yards then it's at the spot of the foul but maybe he called a hold he might have called a hold actually called a hold and that's what they called during frat v fundy last night they gave our pass interference at the spot of the foul. So a looping ball from Wicard on a play action play, and that's going to go for a touchdown for Walsh. I think on that prior play, the holding call kind of lulled
Starting point is 00:46:53 this Hillsdale defense to sleep a bit. And what a beautiful ball there from Wickert. Brady Gooding just over the top of that Hillsdale Charger defense, they had no safeties back there. And so once he beat his man, Wicker just had to loft that ball. He got under it and took it the rest of the way to the crib. And now the Cavaliers are going to attempt an extra point. The kick is up and it's good.
Starting point is 00:47:27 And that makes the score. 28 to 7 Hillsdale leads over Walsh. You're listening to Charter Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. This is The Making of America from the Jackson. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution outlawed the manufacturing, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquors. The Volstead Act then gave federal authorities the power to enforce prohibition, but with only 30 agents per state, organized crime had no problem quenching America's thirst. In his 1932 presidential campaign, Franklin Roosevelt endorsed the repeal of prohibition with his slogan,
Starting point is 00:48:13 I think we all could do with a beer. A year later, the 21st Amendment was passed repealing prohibition. It remains the only amendment in the U.S. Constitution repealed by the passage of another amendment. This has been the Making of America. I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater's Stadium. On the campus of Hillsdale College, I'm Ted Ferrenger alongside these Carson Brower. 408 left in the first half.
Starting point is 00:48:52 Hillsdale leads Walsh 28 to 7. Nice possession there from Hayden Wickard. The starting quarterback for Walsh in company, they drove right down the field and put their first points on the board. So we'll see how Hillsdale responds. At halftime, Hillsdale is crowning. homecoming king and queen I would like
Starting point is 00:49:19 Michael Bougamel to win if I had to pick Boyce in the gun quarterback run to the right Hayward is the lead blocker and he's going to fight back to the line of scrimmage second down in 10 from the Charger 25
Starting point is 00:49:34 I will say my vote did go elsewhere for homecoming King being a part of Simpson one of the dorms here on campus I had to vote for my head a Alex Brewer but Michael Bogumau also such a just a character of campus. Just a goat.
Starting point is 00:49:50 Alex Beer is also awesome. A lot of nice people here at Hillsdale, so you really can't go wrong. Second down in 10, Hillsdale at their own, 25, Boyce in a gun, Hayward to his right. Boyce moves in the pocket, throw to Ruddy to the 31-yard line. And that'll set up a third down in about four.
Starting point is 00:50:11 When we get a stat sheet at halftime, We'll have to check on your prediction of 30 touches because, man, it sure looks like that's the first place Boyce's eyes go. Every single play is to Ruddy. We will see. He will, he might have close to 15 by the end of the half, but to upkeep that in the second half will be a tall task. Boyce in the gun on this third down in three at the Charger, 32 and Gishu to his right. Boyce, looking to his right, throw out to Skura, and he gets a first down out to the 42. yard line. Nice job from the
Starting point is 00:50:46 Zionsville native. Way to step up in the pocket there by Boyce. Put that ball in the money and then just absorb the contact. He got absolutely rocked. He's been taking some hits, but good to see him still stepping up. Taking the contact and making the play that needs to be made. Boyce has done a really nice
Starting point is 00:51:06 job throughout this first half. First down in 10 for Hillsdale at their own 42, 219 left in the first half. Play action, boys, back to pass. Looking for Ruddy downfield. And Ruddy attempts a one-handed catch at the 21-yard line of Walsh, but it falls incomplete. He's shown me videos of him doing that all the time in practice, and that would have been a highlight reel for sure. That would have been one to put on the NFL mixtape.
Starting point is 00:51:39 Maybe we'll get a Tavon Austin-esque mixtape from Shay Ruddy when he graduates. But great coverage down the field there. Great work from the DB to get his head around so that the flag doesn't come out because they're both being pretty handy down the field. Second down in 10 for the Chargers at their own 44. Boyce back to pass. He's got Carico along the sidelines. And Carico finally brought down at the Walsh 26. and that'll be the final play before the two-minute warning.
Starting point is 00:52:13 And we'll take a time out with them. Chargers leading the Cavaliers 28 to 7. You're listening to Charger football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Hi, I'm Ariel McDowell here with The Word to the Wise. Allegedly, as Americans, we live in a constitutional republic. This means that if the legislators pass laws we don't like, we can vote them out. However, especially since Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal in the 1930s, that power has been largely distributed among bureaucrats.
Starting point is 00:52:40 For example, instead of Congress making rules that keep the air clean, they will assign an agency that responsibility. That agency then creates as many rules as they feel accomplishes their mandate. Often these rules can incentivize loophole games over construct and change, and you can't vote these guys out. Over the past decade, federal bureaucratic agencies have averaged 23 rules for every one law that Congress has passed. These are most of the rules that constrain your life, like where you can build a fence,
Starting point is 00:53:05 where you can fish, how and where you can start a business. The only solution is for the Supreme Court to start penalizing delegation violations at a much stricter threshold than they currently do. So there's not much we can do. But anyway, as an American, you should know that's how it works. Have fun with this information. This has been a word to the wise on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower.
Starting point is 00:53:34 Hillsdale trying to add to a 28-7 lead over Walsh. First down at 10 for Hillsdale at the Walsh. 26, pass intended for Ryan Scura along the boundary, and it falls incomplete. Ryan Scurra with a quick little hook route by the sideline. It looks like he just slipped coming out of his break. Would have been a good ball by Boyce, but maybe check the cleats at halftime to see if they still got that grip. Second down in 10, 155 left in the first half. Boyce in the gun and Gishu to his right.
Starting point is 00:54:09 Metzger to the near side. Carricko and Stanton to the far. And it's a quarterback run all the way. Boyce waving through the defense. He's to the five. And down to the three-yard line of Walsh. And there's a penalty marker lying at the goal line. So we'll see what that call is, as well as an injured Walsh defender.
Starting point is 00:54:30 at the five. So a really chaotic play. And they're going to take a timeout for the injured defensive player for Walsh. And we will take a timeout with them. You're listening to charge your football right here on Radio Freehillsdale 101.7. I'm your host James Jawski and welcome to factual selection. Starting point is 00:55:16 Do you have what it takes to make it to the end? The timer starts now. How many wheels does a bike have? Two, who is SpongeBob SquarePants' best friend? Patrick Starr, which is the largest state in America? Alaska. What gas do plants absorb? from the atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:55:37 Carbon dioxide. Who was the third U.S. president? Thomas Jefferson. What does USB stand for? Universal serial bus. And that is it, folks. Tally up the casualties and see who made it the farthest. My name is James Joscy and I will see you on the next round of factual selection.
Starting point is 00:55:58 I'm Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Muddy Waters, standing in mind. Ted Ferringer alongside me's Carson Brower. Hillsdale leads Walsh, 28 to 7. And with 139 left in the first half, Chargers at the Walsh 2 to try to add to their 21-point lead here on this beautiful
Starting point is 00:56:33 fall afternoon in South Central Michigan. It's eye formation. Boyce under center In Gishu in it Running back It's another tush push And we'll see if Boyce got across the line
Starting point is 00:56:50 As they Try to sift through The pile on the goal line And he's short of the goal line So with 54 seconds left In counting in the first half I would imagine the charges Are going to run this clock down
Starting point is 00:57:09 and then add to this lead. Really, it might have helped them to not score on that prior play. Now this half is going to end with the charge of possession, especially the timeouts in their back pockets, and now the ball inches from the goal line. Eye formation. It's another QB sneak, and this time, Boyce is for sure in the end zone for a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:57:37 Now. Hillsdale, 34, Walsh 7, as Dylan Zadario trots on the field to kick the extra point. And there's another Walsh injury on the field. It looks like it's a defensive lineman, but he gets up under his own power. But he will be attended to by the athletic trainers. Nebraska leads Indiana 17 to 13. I'm quite nervous. I don't know if the fan base can take another loss to a top 25 ranked opponent. This one would be a little bit heartbreaking,
Starting point is 00:58:19 especially being up 17 to 6 at one point in this game. Just saw that punt go back into the end zone for a touchback. So we'll see what Indiana can do, but hopefully the courthouse can hold on. With 22 seconds left in the first half, Dill and Dario on attempt the extra points. Gora to hold, likenes to snap. Good snap, good hold.
Starting point is 00:58:39 Kick is up. And it's good. Hillsdale, 35. Walsh, 7. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. I have moderate to severe news fatigue. Starting point is 00:59:52 And welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium. Dylan DeDario kicks this one away. Gil's going to return it for Walsh, and he gets out to the Cavalier 35. So good return from him. And with 16 seconds left, I'm going to imagine Walsh is going to just take a knee. and then going to half and really go back to the drawing board here because they're trailing Hillsdale 35 to 7. Other than that one explosive play over the top for the touchdown,
Starting point is 01:00:26 they really haven't had anything. And that might be the most first downs they picked up on a drive. And I think it was two. So Hillsdale Charger defense has been very stifling. Whitaker back to pass. Walsh is going to try for a play here in the final seconds of the first half and that falls incomplete. He had Brady Gooding open down the middle of the field right between the hashes. Almost in time to take a time out, run another play and then maybe get a field goal up.
Starting point is 01:01:00 But instead it's incomplete and second down in 10. So now a second down. Cavaliers at their own 35, wickered in the gun. It's just to give up the middle. And the Walsh running back is taken down at the 44. And that's the end of the first half. Hillsdale College, 35, Walsh University, 7. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:01:37 We will have second half action and we'll let you know who won Homecoming King and Queen for 2026. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College. I'm Ted Ferrenzer alongside me's Carson Brower for second half action between Hillsdale College and Walsh. Chargers lead the Cavaliers, 35 to 7, as Walsh will start out the second half with the ball. Wickard in the gun, Gill to his right. It's the second down in one for the calves at their own. 34. Wicked back to pass, caught out in the boundary, and Nixiexha brings down Stanford at the 40.
Starting point is 01:02:34 A couple quick, productive plays from this Walsh Cavaliers offense to start the second half. I wonder what the coaches said to them in the locker room. Coming out, down 35 to 7, this is the most crucial drive of the game. You have to come away with a touchdown here if you're the Walsh offense. Wicked in the gun, Gil in the backfield with him. Stanford to the nearest side. Motion from right to left. It's a give up the middle.
Starting point is 01:03:02 and he gets out across the 46-yard line. And 13-43 left and counting in the third quarter. With a gain of seven, that'll be second down in three. Wickard in the gun, Gill to his right. Stanford to the nearest side, two receivers to the far. Wicked back to pass, throws out to his tight end, and that's enough for a first down into Hillsdale territory. It looks like Walsh is getting more comfortable here on the offensive side of things.
Starting point is 01:03:41 It sure feels like it. Every play has been a positive game, keeping themselves in second and short, has really opened up the playbook for them. A quick little out route to the tight end. It's another first down into Hillsdale territory. First down in 10 for Walsh. At the Charger, 47, Wicker back to pass. Looking to his left, now moves to his right,
Starting point is 01:04:01 throws along the sideline and it falls incomplete William Butler the 6-3, 225 pounds tight end, the intended target and that will make it second down in 10
Starting point is 01:04:21 Walsh at the Charger 47 trying to break this lead that the Chargers have over them Hillsdale, 35, Walsh 7. Wicked in the gun, Giltz, who is right. Wicker, back to pass, throws caught by Stanford at the 36-yard line
Starting point is 01:04:39 before being forced out by Ryan Nixa. Well, that's enough for a first down. So two first downs here for this Walsh offense. And now they'll be spotted at the charger, 36. Wicked in the gun, Giltu is right, two receivers in the airside, one to the far. Blitz shown for Morrow. Now he backs off. Thrown out to the far side to that Ohio State grad transfer we were talking about earlier today.
Starting point is 01:05:15 They're showing a lot more composure here to start the second half. Getting through their progressions, making the pitching catch, keeping them in the short yardage plays. Second down in two for Walsh. They're at there at the Charger 28. Wickert's going to look at for Stanford down the sideline, and it's a touchdown. Touchdown for the Cavaliers. And there may be some life here for Walsh. Boy, oh boy, what a beautiful throw there from Wicked.
Starting point is 01:05:55 That was a beautiful ball from Wicard, a two ball, as the quarterbacks call it, kind of layered. It's got a little bit of loft under it, but it is a little bit of. of those sky go route sort of passes, kind of layered it right in between, and Scooby Stanford did the rest for the Walsh Cavaliers. With 1150 left in the third quarter, Walsh on to complete the extra point. And that'll make it 35 to 14.
Starting point is 01:06:22 You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor, this is Minute of Honor. Here's Jinnah Suhita. On March 9 to 12, 1966, Sergeant 1st Class Benny G. Adkins's camp was attacked early in the morning. Adkins manned a mortar position to defend the camp. Fighting continued until early the next morning when enemy forces launched their main attack.
Starting point is 01:06:48 When all mortar rounds were expended, he used every available resource to continue his resistance. In order to evacuate, Adkins and a small group of soldiers dug through the back of the bunker and fought their way out of the camp. When he learned that the last helicopter had already departed, Adkins took charge until, they were rescued two days later. During the 38-hour battle and 48 hours of escape and evasion, Adkins killed an estimated 155 enemy fighters while sustaining 18 different wounds to his body. For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Sergeant First Class Benny G. Adkins was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium.
Starting point is 01:07:33 drive kick for Conara is picked up by Ruddy and he weaves through some defenders up to the Charger 30-yard line with 1144 left in the third quarter. Here comes Eli Boyce and company. So we'll see how the Chargers respond to that nice touchdown drive from the Walsh Cavaliers. Folks, it looks like Nebraska is going to lose to Indiana 20 to 17 and extend their unbeaten streak against ranked opponents to 31 straight. And I am depressed right now. Boyce, back to pass, rolling to his right on this first down at the Hillsdale 30. The ball falls incomplete.
Starting point is 01:08:22 He'll bring up a second down in 10. He had his man standing over the middle. Just a little bit of a misplaced ball there from Boyce for a very, very good first half, very accurate first half. Just not the start you want to get off to in a second half. Second down in 10. Chargers at their own 30. Boys in the Gun, In Gishu 2 is right, ready to the near side. Stanton and Carrico to the far.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Gisou running right. Cuts it across the 30 out to the 38-yard line. And that'll bring up a third down in short. That's more of what we saw from the charger offense in the first. half. Eli Boyce in the first half accounted for over 300 total yards and five touchdowns. Just really amazing stats for this charger offense this season. Third down in two, four Hillsdale. They're at their own 38. Boyce in the gun in Gishu, too, motion from right from right to left. Quarterback run to the right. Boyce gets leveled at the
Starting point is 01:09:31 40, but it's enough for a first down. Tough running for the junior quarterback. And now that clock will keep running here, as Hillsdale is trying to add to their 35-14 advantage over Walsh, Boyce in the gunning. Heeshoe to his right, Carricone, ready to the far side. Chargers at their own 40. Give to Inguishu up the middle and he's going to churn forward to the 43.
Starting point is 01:10:13 It's a below average carry for Ben Gishu, who averaged 4.8 yards per carry in the first half. Only picking up three on that carry. It brings up second and seven for the charger offense. Just trying to get out of their own territory. Second down in six. He's going to his right. Chargers at their own, 44. One-on-one coverage here against Ruddy at the far side.
Starting point is 01:10:46 And Ruddy is the intended target, but it falls incomplete. I thought it was one-on-one coverage, but they had a safety hovering over the top, and it made it for a difficult window for boys to throw into. I'm a little surprised we didn't see a flag come out there. It looked a little handsy at the top of the route. Kind of stopped Shea Ruddy from getting out of his break. Otherwise, he might have gotten to that. Well-placed ball from Boyce right along the sidelines.
Starting point is 01:11:12 Just a little bit of hindrance on Ruddy's break. Third down and six for Hillsdale. They're thrown 44, Boyce back to pass, looking towards Scura. Scura breaks on his route, and it's a obvious pass interference. That'll be marker lying at the way. Walsh 48. Terrell Greer just got there a little bit early. Ball hadn't quite gotten there and he hits him in the back.
Starting point is 01:11:50 Makes it a very, very easy call on the officials, first down chargers into Walsh Cavalier territory. Ball will be spotted at the Walsh, 48. First down in 10. Boyce in the gun. Vermeulen to his right, scurro to the near side, Carrickone, Metzker to the far, give to Vermeulen running right.
Starting point is 01:12:16 He cuts it up and lunges forward to the line of scrimmage. Maybe got a yard on that play, but not much room there for the sophomore running back. For as productive as this charger offense has been, they haven't really gotten too much going on the ground. The most successful runs have actually covered. from the quarterback position with Eli Boyce averaging 6.4 yards per carry in the first half. But the tailbacks haven't really gotten too much going.
Starting point is 01:12:48 Second down in 10. Boyce play action looking towards Metzger at the 45 and Metzger lowers the shoulder. Down to the 37-yard line of Walsh. Great way to power through that tackle. keep those legs going. I know when I watched the drills in high school football, I was a kicker, so I didn't have to do all those drills. But they would always tell the defensive backs,
Starting point is 01:13:17 you got to keep your legs going so that the receiver can't fall forward. Great job from Metsker there to fall forward for that first down. Hillsdale, the first down in 10 at the Walsh, 36. Boyce in the gun, Gishu is right. Ruddy the far side, Kerikon, secure to the near. Boys, looking towards Ruddy. It's a go route from Ruddy. One on one down the sideline and the ball falls incomplete.
Starting point is 01:13:45 You can hear the groans from the crowd below us. It sure looked like the feet got tangled up. Don't know if it was intentional, but the trip from the DB definitely caused Ruddy to be to not be able to get under that pass. Great ball from Boyce. Probably should have been a touchdown or at least a flag. Ruddy was on the ground as the ball was in the air. thought he got pushed down, but then he might have had a chance to grab it while he was on the
Starting point is 01:14:14 turf. That would have been an amazing catch. Second down in 10 for Hillsdale. At the Walsh, 36. Boyce in the gun, he used you to his right, play action. And Simpson, the freshman with a nice grab. And that'll set up a third down in about five. Nice little pitch and catch there from boys. All the pressure in his face. Kind of just lofted a ball up over the line, picked up some solid yardage so that they are in a third and very manageable on the fringe field goal range.
Starting point is 01:14:51 Third down and four, rather. Ball spotted at the Walsh 30. Chargers break the huddle. Boy, send a gun in Gishu to his right. Carrick-going ready to the near side. 728 left in the third quarter. Ruddy motions to the fourth. Boyce throws it out to Carico at the 24.
Starting point is 01:15:14 And the pass was on the money there. And enough for a first down. That is teach tape play from Eli Boyce. He sees Carico at the top of his route. Throws the ball before he even makes the break. Balls right on his numbers. Really good anticipation. And that's a lot of chemistry that comes from lots of reps on the field.
Starting point is 01:15:37 First down at 10 for Hillsdale. They're at the Walsh, 23, Boyce in the gunny Gishi to his right, skirt in the near side, Metzger and ready to the far. Boyce rolling out to his right pressured, and he's going to throw it out of bounds. He did a nice job to live for another day there, and that'll make it a second down in 10. Hart skipped a beat when that throw came out. Walsh got pressure right off the bat, red the bootleg,
Starting point is 01:16:05 Boyce just had to throw it away, just a little too close to the outstretched hands of the Walsh defensive back to be comfortable, but falls incomplete nonetheless. Second down in 10, Hillsdale. The Cavalier 23, Boys in the Gun, and he's going to run it up the middle and leans forward to the 19. Well, the side judge makes it seem it's going to be put, yes, it will be put at the 20. yard line as ruddy checks in rabidow checks out third down and seven for the chargers time of possessions very important here they're going to want to just chew up as much clock as possible and add to this
Starting point is 01:16:54 21 point lead boys in the gun and guisha to his right one-on-one down here between carico and a cavalier cornerback and it's a stutter and go for Carrico but the ball falls incomplete and that'll make it a fourth down and a 30 yard field goal
Starting point is 01:17:19 attempt well a 37 yard field goal attempt rather for Dylan Dodario voice made the right read there Tyrell Greer you've heard his name a lot he's been playing good coverage on the back end. Helmut actually got in the way of that pass.
Starting point is 01:17:38 Brings up fourth down for the Chargers. Dylan Dadaria on a complete attempt, rather, a 38-yard field goal attempt. And there's a flag on the field as the kick is up in good. But Chargers are adamant that it's on Walsh. And now the Chargers defense, three, single. Five-R-Dar penalties, feel fourth down. And now the Chargers are. your offense is going to come back on the field.
Starting point is 01:18:14 It's a good little confidence kick, though, for Dylan Dadario. Watch that ball sail through the uprights and over the white tents at the back of the north end zone. Really great. But it brings up fourth and short. I haven't heard of disconcerting signals in Division 2 football before. Disconcerting signals. I don't even know what that means.
Starting point is 01:18:35 Fourth down in two for Hillsdale at the Walsh, 15. The offense is back out on the field. motion from Ruddy to quarterback run all the way and voice is going to convert and that's a first down for the Chargers out to the Cavalier 12-yard line. Defensive delay of game really comes back to bite the Walsh Cavaliers. Disconcerting signals for the listeners at home is when someone lined up on the defensive line sort of barks or like mimics are snows. cap count, almost intending to get the offensive line to jump, but instead it costs the Walsh
Starting point is 01:19:16 Cavaliers five yards. Boyce in the gun and Gishu 2's right, right to the far side, skirt to the near, quarterback run to the right. Boyce weaving up inside the 10 and down to the 5 before the Hillsdale offensive line is going to push him into the end zone. And that's just an unbelievable effort there. from that charger offensive line. And Hillsdale, 41 Walsh 14.
Starting point is 01:19:48 That play was absolutely dead on the four-yard line, and then just a swarm of blue jerseys showed up, pushed Eli Boyce into the end zone, probably off his feet by the end of it, for his fourth rushing touchdown of the day. DeDario, on to attempt the extra points. Skir to hold, Likins to start. snap.
Starting point is 01:20:11 Kick is up, Ben, good. Hillsdale 42, Walsh 14. You're listening to Charge Your Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. I'm your host James Jawski and welcome to factual selection. The game of trivia where your future is determined by six questions. Here, your first-run answer will be your last. Do you have what it takes to make it to the end? The timer starts now.
Starting point is 01:20:37 How many wheels does a bike have? Two, who is SpongeBob Square Pants' best friend? Patrick Starr, which is the largest state in America? Alaska. What gas do plants absorb from the atmosphere? Carbon dioxide. Who was the third U.S. president? Thomas Jefferson.
Starting point is 01:20:58 What does USB stand for? Universal Serial Bus. And that is it, folks. Tally up the casualties and see who made it the farthest. My name is James Jawsky and I will see you on the next round of factual selection. I'm Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferrenger alongside me's Carson Brower.
Starting point is 01:21:31 Hillsdale leads, Walsh, 42 to 14 on this homecoming matchup. And we'll be. You'll see what Hayden, Wickard and company for this Walsh offense can draw up as they are really going to have to get some points here. To try to get back in this game, but it's going to be a really tall task. Down by 28. Wicked in the gun. And he's going to roll to his left. Play action.
Starting point is 01:22:12 Panola on the quarterback pressure. And that will set up a second down in 10. It seems like they had a lot of success keeping Wicked in the pocket. So kind of interested to see why they got him rolling out. The best place he's made have been stepping up in the pocket and making plays down the field. Instead, he's rolling out and he's fully exposed for Luke Pinola to get the quarterback pressure. Second down in 10. It's a give to Gill up the middle to the 20.
Starting point is 01:22:45 seven yard line. Alex Lee on the tackle. And now it's third down in seven for this charger defense. So here we go. Third down and seven. Wall should throw on 27. Wickard in the gun. Guilt, who is right? Wicked.
Starting point is 01:23:12 Back to pass. Pressured from Bradger. And the ball falls incomplete. Fourth down and seven for the calves, and they're going to have to punt this one away. Great pressure from the interior of that defensive line. Forcing Wicker. Fort flushed out of the pocket.
Starting point is 01:23:30 Really, with nothing to the weak side, just throws the ball almost all the way up into the stands of Muddywater Stadium. And Ruddy's standing back at his own 35-yard line. 4-17 left in. the third quarter. Harper to punt this one away for the calves. It's a good punt. And then takes a Hillsdale bounce.
Starting point is 01:24:01 It's going to fall all the way back to the charger. No, correction, the Cavalier 42. So great field position for Hillsdale to start out this drive. And after their worst starting field position of the game, last drive. Now they have their best. Starting all the way in the Walsh Cavalier offensive territory. First down in 10, four Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:24:32 They're at the Cavalier of 43. Boyce in the gun, Inguishu to his left. Rabido to the nearest side. It's just to give Dan Gishu up the middle and he leans out across the 38. I'll really be at the 39-yard line. And Hillsdale, I'm assuming they're just going to have a pretty run-heavy offense now. Chew up as much of the clock as possible. And come away with their fifth victory of the year.
Starting point is 01:25:13 That would be the smart play. Just kind of get the ball on the ground. You've controlled the line of scrimmage all game. You've been getting a good push up front. Just run this clock. Hopefully this drive takes us to the end of the third quarter. It's a jet sweep for Ruddy, and he's out to the 20-yard line, down to the 19. Beautiful play call there from Coach Otterbine, and Hillsdale is inside of the red zone.
Starting point is 01:25:44 First down in 10 for Hillsdale at the Cavalier 19. Chargers huddling at the 23. Two, 56 left in the third quarter. Boyce in the gun, Ingeu to his left, Stanton to the nearest side. Spinazzi and Rabido to the far. Give to Ingeesu running right, and he gets mauled in the backfield.
Starting point is 01:26:10 Pushed all the way back to the 32, so we'll see where he's spotted. It's the first side. of life we've kind of seen from this Walsh defense on this drive. It just feels like they don't really have their legs under them. And you can't really blame them. They've been on the field for probably twice the time of the offense. Just trying to contain this Hillsdale Charger offense that's just been so productive today.
Starting point is 01:26:38 Second down in 15. That's a loss of five. Chargers are at the Walsh. 24. Boy, in the gun. he rolls out to his left, throws towards Carico at the 18. Carico makes a cut and finally pushed out of bounds at the 13-yard line. Carico is showing his athletic ability there, and that'll make it a third down and manageable.
Starting point is 01:27:07 At number 37, Anthony Sportinado. Great play by Carrico there. Secure the catch, make it third and short, but also. when he went out of bounds. He went out of bounds backwards, which keeps the clock rolling and should hopefully drag this possession almost to the end of this third quarter. 124 left in the third quarter. Boyce in the gun, Carricone Stanton to the near side. Metzger to the far. Boyce back to pass looking for Metzker and it falls incomplete. Fourth down. and Hillsdale is going to attempt a field goal here.
Starting point is 01:27:51 Didario will now attempt a 30-yard field goal. So fourth down in three, ball is at the Cavalier 12. Didario, his kick is up and no good. Hillsdale 42. Walsh 12. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Welcome to the world outside on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we explore fascinating events and culture in foreign countries. Turn in your atlas to the Isle of Man in the UK. Locals used to speak a language called Max, but the last native speaker died in 1973. So, how are there more than 50 native speakers today? Before the original speakers died,
Starting point is 01:28:59 concerned locals began making recordings of the language. Thanks to these recordings, residents of the Isle who grew up speaking English learned Manx as a second language. Once they had kids, they began speaking only Max at home, raising a small but growing new generation of native speakers. That's all for now. I'm Jonathan Taylor on The World Outside for Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Keep exploring God's fascinating world.
Starting point is 01:29:32 Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferrenger alongside Nice Carson Brower. And as the final seconds ticked down in this third quarter, we will see if the Chargers add to their 42-14 advantage over the Walsh Cavaliers. Third down for Walsh, third down in eight, to be specific. Ball at the Walsh 22, and that's the end of the third quarter. Hillsdale 42, Walsh 14. You're listening to Charger football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale.
Starting point is 01:30:23 Fox in the fast lane. We're at the halfway point in the 26 NASCAR Cup Series Chase as drivers head back to Charlotte this weekend for the Bank of America 400. 267 laps around the oval track marking the first time since 2017 that the fall festivities at Charlotte are on the one and a half mile oval layout rather than the track's roval configuration that was in place for the last eight years. It was an exciting finish last week in Vegas as Chase Brist. He dominated the field and took the checkered flag in the South Point 400. The win moving them up to sixth place in the chase standings, as the number 19 cars still has a lot of work to do for the final five races of the season. Kyle Larson remains at the top of the leaderboard,
Starting point is 01:31:08 followed by Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Joey Legano, and Ryan Blaney. The action gets underway from Charlotte Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern. For Fox in the Fast Lane, Tony Genualdo, Fox News. Welcome back to Frank Muddywater Stadium. Third down and eight for Walsh to start this fourth quarter. Wicked in the gun. Looking to his right, pressure from Badger and Biennick's going to throw it into the stands. And that'll set up a fourth down in eight.
Starting point is 01:31:46 And Walsh is going to have to punt this one away. It's back-to-back third down plays by that charge of defensive line. Getting home on the quarterback, forcing the ball out. really early before anything can really develop down the field. Great play from Badger, getting that penetration right up front and getting his hands up so the quarterback doesn't have the visibility down the field to make a play. So here we go. Matt Harper to punt this one away for the Cavaliers, standing at his own eight.
Starting point is 01:32:14 Shea Ruddy waiting for the punt at his own 38th. And the ball's going to bounce. all the way down to the 20-yard line. So here comes this charger offense. Hillsdale leads Walsh 42 to 14 on this pristine Saturday afternoon in Hillsdale, Michigan. Now that all my hope has been lost in this Nebraska defeat, I don't know, I'm speechless, man. But the Ironman World Championships are going on right now in Kona, Kailua, another sport I keep up with.
Starting point is 01:32:58 Pretty niche. Do you keep up with this sport? It's very niche. I'm just starting to get into it. But I was watching it on my phone earlier, and my friends were like, you want to watch people swim 2.4 miles? I was like, Iron Man World Championships in Kona. Like, there were seven foot waves yesterday. This is awesome to watch.
Starting point is 01:33:16 A sport that was invented in the 1980s When three buddies in Hawaii I believe it was on the big island Or maybe Oahu I don't know which island specifically But they decided to swim 2.4 bike 112 and run a marathon And then it just became super popular
Starting point is 01:33:42 As there's a pitch outside here to Ingeishu out to the 30-yard line. A journalist was visiting in the 80s covering maybe a surf competition that ended up writing an article and covering the Ironman event with some local people. And since then, it's grown into a very serious sport.
Starting point is 01:34:08 I think it's getting a lot more popular among young people. Second down in 10 for Hillsdale at the Charger, 3rd. Boise in the gun and he's shoot to his left, two receivers to the far side, quarterback run up the middle, and Boyce is going to lean forward to the 32. Nowadays with Iron Man, a lot of the top athletes have YouTube channels, so there's weekly vlogs, a lot of equipment goes into the sport,
Starting point is 01:34:39 and maximizing speed and V-O-2 maxes. it's very scientific in diets and unbelievable athletes. It's definitely not a cheap entry barrier either because some of these bikes that these pros will be using in this world championship today cost about as much as my car, if not more. The barrier to entry is very high as the pass is complete at the 40-yard line. Out to, it looks like.
Starting point is 01:35:15 like that's a new name we have for the Chargers. I would assume it's a freshman as we get more people filtering through. Lewis Raffin on the grab. 6-285-pound freshman. So good for him. We're ticking down in this game so far, down to 12 minutes remaining. Boy, in the gun. It's a give to Ingishu.
Starting point is 01:35:45 And he's going to fight to the 43 on that first down. Set up a second down and long. Another endurance event of note this weekend is the Chicago Marathon. So I told him I'd give him a quick shout-up. Andrew Spiegel, sophomore here at Hillsdale College, is actually running the Chicago Marathon. Andrew Spiegel. Was he here yesterday at the Frat Vee Fundy game? She was here.
Starting point is 01:36:06 So he's traveling. It's probably what, three hours? I think he's about a three-hour drive staying with his brother. And I think his wake-up call is 4 a.m. tomorrow. What was his goal? What does he want to, is he looking to just finish or does he want to break his specific time? He's trying to run 3.30 from what I've heard, which is about a 750 pace per mile. He has run one marathon before, which he ran 348.
Starting point is 01:36:35 So significant jump to shave off 18 minutes. Good for him. Chicago. Beautiful weather to do it. I guess if you want to see a city, you can just sign up for the marathon and run through downtown. Third down and five for the chargers. They're at their own 46. Boyce, back to pass, looking towards Rabido.
Starting point is 01:36:59 Now he's just going to run for it. Gets out across midfield and down inside the 45. There is a campus rec employee named Micah Gregory, ran a 303 marathon. It's astounding. I think what? Last month, I believe. Yeah, I was about, I think it was about a month ago. I think you're right. But it's just, that's honestly just insane. Those people are just built different. I was going to try and run the Chicago, but unfortunately injured my knee.
Starting point is 01:37:34 But I was just like, let's finish or go sub four. Meanwhile, these guys are like, let's try and qualify for Boston, which is honestly insane. What is the qualification time for a 21-year-old for Boston? It's got to be sub-3. This year it is 249-43. Whoa. I do not believe I will ever be able to run a 250 marathon or sub-250. You've seen a ginormous uptick in the fitness industry for people our age.
Starting point is 01:38:08 And so I guess they're getting more competitive. this is the first year it's ever dropped below three hours for a cutoff. We have a penalty marker on the field after a nice run from Ingeishu. So we'll see what the verdict is. And unsportsmanlike conduct. And unsportsmanlike conduct will push the chargers even further into Walsh territory. But yes, I absolutely love.
Starting point is 01:38:41 the triathlon world. I like where it's going. I really do like the interest in the endurance sports among the youth. I think it's a really cool movement. One day it would be very fun to run a marathon. However, right now I'm busy with Hillsdale schoolwork. I do not know how people find the time to run probably marathon training 60 to 80 miles a week. Yeah, I think the highest I got up to is about 65 miles a week. Would you go on weekly like 18 mile runs and stuff? My longest was a 20-mileer leading up to, I mean, now I have tendonitis, but leading up in that prep, 20 miles just around Hillsdale, kind of just get lost on the country roads. You mentioned you ran a marathon already. I have not. Okay, you were supposed to run and got injured.
Starting point is 01:39:41 Yeah, unfortunately. Dang, what kind of shoes are you wearing? Are you wearing them right now? Brooks. These aren't my running shoes, but it's the same style. Okay, okay. But Brooks adrenaline. So maybe if they want to throw a sponsorship,
Starting point is 01:39:55 if they listen to Radio Free Hillsdale. Shout out to Brooks for making the best running shoes for high-arched. You think Brooks are better than the Hoka Clifton's. as we have a new quarterback in the game and that is Colin McKearinen and then he's going to go down with an injury. So, boy, oh boy, we've had two really quick injuries
Starting point is 01:40:22 as McCurnan and boys are both injured. So now Cole Cantor. The third quarterback, the third stringer is now in the the game that transfer from Wayne State. Boy, oh boy. That's not good for the quarterback room.
Starting point is 01:40:46 It's a third in 23, 841 left in the ballgame. Hillsdale 42, Walsh, 14, Cantor. It's going to run it up the middle inside the 30. Have you run a half marathon before? I have run a half marathon. I split in 1.49, 43. So that was my only race that I've actually run. I've just run them around Hillsdale County before.
Starting point is 01:41:17 So the injury was what? Do you think it was over-training? Did you do any biking to try to get zone two without much of the impact? As cancer back to pass on this fourth and 20 is going to launch it downfield and the ball falls incomplete. I have done a little bit of biking, a little bit of swimming. There's a whole lot of ways to train. I injured my knee in, like, sixth grade, and then I injured it again in high school, and it's kind of been nagging with me.
Starting point is 01:41:47 So I went to a specialist up at Michigan State University, Go Green, and it turns out I had shipped the bone on the underside of my kneecap and messed up the tendon, and so it was just a whole thing. And I was like, can I run? And he goes, absolutely not. You cannot run a marathon a week after you do that to yourself. Will you have to have surgery or? I think it's time to heal therapy is what we're looking at right now.
Starting point is 01:42:18 A couple months of physical therapy. Wicker, back to pass on this first down in 10. He's got a man downfield all the way to the Hillsdale. 30-yard line on that first down in 10. as the clock's winding down inside of eight minutes remaining. Beautiful back shoulder throw there from Wicker to find his receiver down the sideline. Also a twisting catch from Stevie Diamond. The most explosive play we've seen from this Walsh Cavalier's offense,
Starting point is 01:42:50 and unfortunately it's coming with less than an eighth of the game left. Wickert in the gun, Gill to his left, first down in 10 for the calves. The Charger 29 and Gill gets inside the 25. If for nothing else, I feel like the Hillsdale Charger offense, Hillsdale Charger defense would like to keep Walsh out of the end zone for pride. As of now, Hillsdale College is just conceding 10.3 points per game, which is the third fewest in Division 2 football. Pretty impressive stat.
Starting point is 01:43:26 Wicker back to pass, and he's got an open man downfield in a time. touchdown for the Caves. Stevie Dillon with the grab and Hillsdale. Now their lead is being cut into a bit. Chargers 42, Walsh 20. Nice throw there from Wicked. Kinara on to attempt the extra point. We will see if the kick is good.
Starting point is 01:44:02 Good snap, good hold. Kick is up and good. Hillsdale 42, Walsh, 21. You're listening to Charger Football right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor. Here's Jinnah Suhita. On February 20th, 1945 on Iwojima,
Starting point is 01:44:23 Private First Class Jack Lucas and his three companions were sneaking towards the front lines when they were suddenly ambush. Two grenades landed directly in front of them, and Private Lucas unhesitatingly hurled himself upon one grenade and pulled the other under himself, absorbing the force of the explosions in his own body in order to shield his companions. Amazingly, Lucas survived the explosion. He had just had his 17th birthday, six days earlier, making him the youngest Marine to receive the Medal of Honor. Lucas enlisted at the age of 14 without the permission of his mother.
Starting point is 01:44:54 He lied to the recruiter about his age, claiming he was 17. But by his inspiring actions on Iwo Jima, the young man protected his comrades and enabled them to continue the advance. For his valiant spirit of self-sacrifice, private first class Jack Lucas was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Starting point is 01:45:14 Welcome back to Frank Moneywater Stadium. I'm Ted Ferringer alongside me. Carson Brower, 649 left in the ball game. Squib kick, rolls past Carrico, and Ineushu's going to pick it up at the 20 and right out of bounds of the 25. Hillstill
Starting point is 01:45:30 42, Walsh, 21. We'll see what quarterback trots in the game for the Chargers, and it's Cole Cantor, the third stringer. Wayne State Transfer from three years ago. And now with 645 left, I'm going to assume it's going to be a lot of runs called by this offensive coaching staff. Yes, so right now in the Iron Man World Championships, there's 31 miles left in the bike. and in the lead a kid named Barnaby
Starting point is 01:46:06 that's a nobody but I would presume Christian Blumenfeld out of Norway will try to run himself back into the race as he always does Matthew Marquod and second Magnus Ditlev and third and Sam Laidlow and fourth whoa
Starting point is 01:46:22 the 2023 world champion from France not a lot of people like him Sam Laidlow. We will see if he can get his second Kona World Championship. I realize that up front talking about Iron Man on Radio Free Hillsdale is a very niche thing to do. But I'm coping with the fact that Nebraska's 0-1-31 against ranked opponents, so I really don't want to be thinking about football.
Starting point is 01:46:58 outside of Frank Moneywater Stadium. And oh no, your Spartans are trailing to Indy, Illinois, rather. Illinois, yeah, both bottom feeders of the Big Ten. And it's just, we're well past our glory days of Kenneth Walker and Connor Cook and all those guys. So I can't wait for basketball season to start. Nice throw there from cancer. Zane Zader with the grab, and that's going to put the chargers all the way out to their own 44. And here we go. The clock is working in the Chargers' advantage.
Starting point is 01:47:43 Now the sun's kind of gone away, and it's a little bit overcast. What do you have planned for this evening? I'm going to go to Mock Rock, and then what? Do you have any midterms this week? I don't. Oh, I do have a sports marketing midterm this week, and that's a great reminder that I should probably study for that. Is that on Monday? It is not.
Starting point is 01:48:00 It's on Thursday. So I've got a little bit of time. But my best friend from home is actually in visiting from Texas. So I'm going to hang out with him and show him the sights of what Hillstale has. Right now, there's really not much to see. The entire quad's being torn up, but the construction is pretty impressive. I have midterm with Dr. Moss, his Reformation class on Monday. So shout out Dr. Moss, the department chair.
Starting point is 01:48:28 of the history department. He, phenomenal teacher, and it will be a very interesting midterm on Monday at 8 a.m. So I might have to get in about two hours this evening, so Sunday tomorrow will not be hell, but at least the Nebraska game was during the day and not in the evening. I must say, they have to do a study to compare the GPAs of,
Starting point is 01:48:58 Non-college football fans, only college football fans, and then college football fans and NFL football fans. I would be willing to argue that the GPA of the non-football fans is better than the college or NFL fans. It really eats up your weekends. It does when you can turn on a great game like Indiana, Nebraska at noon, and then There's Georgia, Alabama at night, and then the games kick off in the morning all the way in London tomorrow. So definitely just like choose up your weekends, and it just can't happen here at Hillsdale, where the course load is so demanding that you just got to be locked in and you've got to study on the weekends if you really want to succeed. It is true. At least I'm not an NFL fan. So my Sundays are open for getting stuff done, but Saturdays are a bit rough.
Starting point is 01:49:58 Good snap. Woodyard's going to kick this one away for the charges. It's a booming punt. And it's fielded at the 10. Fair cut. Springer with the fair catch. Okay, 240 left in the ball game. Hillsdale 42, Walsh, 21.
Starting point is 01:50:19 Chargers will improve to five and one on the year. And next week, it's the big one. They've got Finley at home at 1 p.m. We will have that coverage right here on Radio Free Hillsdale. Finley, top 25 ranked team in D2. So Chargers are going to have to win that game to try to stay in contention for the G-Mack. But if they keep winning out, they're going to be in the playoffs. This Hillsdale Charger team has really seen quite the turnaround.
Starting point is 01:51:04 I know there's a lot of buzz around campus. We love to talk about it. But my friend who's up visiting from Texas A&M goes, man, I might have to transfer to Hillsdale where there's actually a college football team that wins. It is insane to watch in the NIL era. I think every year it's very unpredictable whether your team will be good or not. Because next year you can just buy a new team. If the chemistry doesn't work this year, it doesn't work.
Starting point is 01:51:32 So a screen pass to Gill, and he's going to get out to the 23-yard line. Unfortunately, it was one of those guys that Indiana just paid a bunch of money for that scored the game-winning touchdown. Well, it is true. However, Nebraska's team is valued at about $35 million. It's got to be one of the most expensive payrolls in the NCAA. Ohio State is it number one in the 50s. So Nebraska is paying their team, but even then, right?
Starting point is 01:52:11 You lose by three, you have the ball with 80 seconds left. You have it all. And it's just those little moments that can determine this season in a way. So we'll see how the corn huskers bounce back. but it's a tough one to swallow for the fans that have paid for 415 consecutive sellouts. Really? The Christhiker faithful is that present? 450 consecutive sellouts.
Starting point is 01:52:45 It extends all the way back to the 1960s. And they are 0.31 against ranked opponents. Thank you, Dan, for the Spirit. to Monday Wattis Stadium. And that's the end of the two-minute warning. So Hillsdale 42, Walsh, 21. First down in 10 for the calves at their 23. Their own 23, Whitaker, back to pass.
Starting point is 01:53:14 And Gill catches it and sprints out to the 38-yard line. Things don't get much easier for you guys next week on the road at number 13 to Oregon. How are you feeling about that game for the cornhuskers? Well, in a really interesting game, the quarterback that just recently transferred from Nebraska, Dylan Riola will be starting against his former team in Eugene. Well, if you play within three points of the seventh ranked team in the country, I hope they're in the game with the 13th ranked team. But you just never know.
Starting point is 01:53:53 And as we kind of tick down here, first down to 10 for Walsh at midfield. 1.34 left in the game. And Walsh is going to get a completion. William Butler with the grab, the tied end. That's enough for a first down. So Walsh might get some extra points here at the end of the half and mess with the Charger defensive statistics
Starting point is 01:54:25 that had been so strong throughout the year. So we'll see if this charger defense can stand strong and not give up any late game points. Wicker, back to pass. He's got a man downfield and it's incomplete. Great coverage there by Koss Davis, Gavin Chenevy, Ryan Nixie. And it'll be a second down.
Starting point is 01:54:50 will be interesting to see if these Walsh get some garbage time points like happened in the Frat v. Fundy game. But overall, Hillsdale College right now, kind of playing a defense, letting them have everything in the middle of the field because everything down the middle just keeps that clock running.
Starting point is 01:55:07 With a minute and eight left in the game, you've got to think that's all she wrote. Second down in 10, it's a throw out in the flat to Gil, and that's enough for a first down to the 26th. yard line. And he went out of bounds, I believe. Oh, they're running the clock now.
Starting point is 01:55:28 It's under a minute. 57, 56, 55, 54. Wickard, in the gun. He's going to throw it downfield intended. For Sean Lodge, Ohio State Transfer, and that'll bring up second down in 10. He had his man wide open right by the pylon. Kind of airmailed him almost out the back of the end zone.
Starting point is 01:55:56 Didn't really seem like there was a whole lot of pressure on him, but with 48 seconds left, you kind of wonder how mentally checked in these players are. Wicked in the gun, Giltz, who's left, second down in 10, Cavs at the Charger 26. Wicked steps up in the pocket. He's going to try to run. And he sprints out of bounds at the 20. And third down and about three. Unfortunately for the Chargers,
Starting point is 01:56:33 the Cavs are marching down the field here and stopping the clock when they go out of bounds. So. The last one we're going to get today. So let's make it loud! On this third down and three. Cavs, at the Charger 19.
Starting point is 01:56:50 Whitgard throws across the middle caught by Butler inside the 15. And that's enough for a first down. And that first down is going to stop the clock momentarily as Walsh calls in a play. And the center judge winds the clock. 24, 23 seconds left. Whitkerd caught inside the tent. Boy, oh boy, where is this Walsh offense early in the game? And it's going to be the final play of the half, or of the game, rather.
Starting point is 01:57:31 7, 6, 5, 4 seconds remaining. 3. On a second down, 8, at the Charger 8. And it's an unbelievable touchdown grab for Walsh. Del with the grass. I mean, that's how we end the game on a one-handed grab. Just a diving one-handed effort from Trey Bell to end the game with a touchdown. But in the end, that is a 42-27 victory for your Hillsdale College Chargers
Starting point is 01:58:07 as they improved a 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in G-Mac play. Well, we'll be here next week, 1 p.m. against Finley. So tune in to game coverage on 101.7 Radio Free Hillsdale.
