The following is a special presentation of WRFH Sports.
First and 10 at the 25 and Dragon Territory.
And two whiteouts to his left, two to his right.
As I say it, I live a crossing cavern on the right side.
He was going right to the post and nobody was anywhere near him.
That's a touchdown and this is a tie ball game now.
Touchdown for the Hillsdale Chargers.
Are you ready?
Hillsdale Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM starts now.
Well, you heard the intro, and this is Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
A beautiful day for football here at Muddywater Stadium.
I'm George Ackler joined alongside Mr. Palmer-Keddy.
Paul, what do you expect to see in today's game?
Yeah, we've got a great game coming up for you guys today.
It's going to be a close matchup.
Hopefully we get a good battle for this homecoming week.
I mean, the weather is beautiful, partly cloudy sky.
weather says it's 68 with a wind chill making about 64 beautiful fall day for some football yeah and especially
with this environment here we do have to mention this is the homecoming game for hillsdale college you see
all the sororities fraternities and dorms filing in it's going to be a packed house here tonight yeah it's been a
slow trickle of students filling up that student section for the past 10 minutes now um they're doing
some pre-game ceremonies honoring some of those alumni who have given a lot to this school and the
crowd is filling out and we're ready for some football today.
Now Paul, who do you see being a standout player in today's game as we look towards kickoff?
Yeah, for me, I think our game-changing charger of the day is going to come from the backfield
for the chargers on offense. I believe that to win this game, they're going to have to run the
football and really, you know, take it to the Walsh defense. We've really had it running back by
committee this year. Kyle Riffel and Ty Williams are listed as starters, but last week, we
Logan Van Eckford had a pretty good performance with lots of workload.
So I'd look for him to be your game-changing Charter of the week.
Yeah, and for me, I think I'm going to go with that defensive line.
I'm going to pick two.
I'm going to cop out right here.
But on the defensive tackle side, you got Zach Toki and Hunter Spurling.
Hunter 6-3-300.
He's a hard man to be moved.
Four tackles for losses, two sacks, and one safety forced already this season.
He's the first line of defense, along with Toki, who is well-loved.
as the big man in the middle for the Chargers defense recorded an interception last season and is very
nimble-footed. He played tight-in in high school. Being able to stop the run is something that the
charges have been relatively good at this year, giving up 145 yards a game. But yeah, like you mentioned,
they're going to face a challenge against a Walsh offense with 193 rushing yards per game,
have a running back by committee. And it's not just their running backs that you have to worry about.
Dallas Jet, who's now their backup quarterback, is a dual threat. He had division one off.
is coming out of high school. He's a player to watch for Walsh. Cameron Mackon, Dante Walker,
and Jake Gill all, you know, have contributed for this Walsh offense that has averaged, like I said,
193 rush yards per game. Yeah, and it's not going to just come down to the defensive line here for the
Chargers. Also look up for the linebacking core. Jacob Vance, lead tackler last year,
he's going to have to really step up and make sure that run offense for the Walsh Cavaliers
does not shred this Chargers defense and run up the score.
So it's going to be a big game up front for the front seven for the Hillsdale Chargers.
Yeah, and if you want to talk about a front seven, let's talk about Cam Hollaback,
the defender for Walsh.
He was named the 2023 GMAC defensive player of the year, had 91 tackles,
three interceptions, four and a half sacks, two fumble recoveries, two touchdowns,
and 11.5 tackles for losses.
So, I mean, saying all that stuff is pretty impressive.
He already has forced three turnovers this year.
He can be a game record if the Chargers' offensive line can't get to the next
level. Well, yeah, and speaking of the Chargers offensive line, I believe we have one of the
Affalter Twins who is a senior this year. He is out. He's on the sidelines, on crutches with his leg
all bandaged up. Looks like they're going to be going with a backup on the offensive line.
I believe it is his younger brother, actually. And that's going to be a tough challenge for the
offensive line as they face a tough Walsh defense, as George was saying. And hopefully they have what it
takes to hold up and, you know, really take it to them in the trenches.
And this isn't a typical Walsh team. I think when you schedule Walsh for homecoming,
you kind of expect, if not an easy win, you know, a less competitive team. But this year,
they're already three and two having blown out Kentucky Wesley in 54 to 10 and being going to
West Virginia for the first game of the season, bidding West Liberty 42 to 21. As you can probably
hear the cheers in the background. They're introducing the Hillsdale Chargers to the thunderous
pause here at Muddywater Stadium, which sees new head coach trying to win his first home game.
I think tonight would be a great way to get it done, and I think they have a great opportunity.
Yeah, Coach Nate Shreffler, he's in his first year as the Hillsdale College head coach,
and he's been here for 25 years.
He's headed up that offense, and he's looking for his first home win, as George mentioned.
He did get his first win last week against Northwood over in Midland, Michigan,
and he's trying to capitalize on that momentum.
and keep it rolling for the Chargers.
And we actually just received some out-of-town scores right before we get started in this football game.
The Ashland Finley game is 24 to 7 at half with the Ashland Eagles up on top.
Northwood beat Thomas Moore 20 to 3.
Ohio Dominican and Tiffin University are tied with zero.
And we are about to start our national anthem.
So we're going to go away for a few minutes, but keep on listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM.
Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen. Today we talk about the man, the myth, the legend himself, shoeless Joe Jackson.
Jackson was born in 1887 and spent the majority of his life in South Carolina.
In 1908, Jackson began his professional career with the Greenville spinners.
Eventually, he signed with Connie Mack to play for the Philadelphia Athletics.
In 1911, he began his first full MLB season, hitting a whopping 408 batting average, a record that still stands today.
Shoeless Jackson's famous nickname comes not from his time in the MLB, but from a mill game he played in South Carolina.
Jackson reportedly had blisters on his feet due to a new pair of cleats.
So he took his shoes off, playing ball in his socks.
As the game continued, a fan who was heckling the players, noticed that Jackson was running to third base in his socks.
The fan shouted,
You shulist son of a gun, you? The name stuck, and he was called shoeless Joe Jackson for the rest of his life.
This has been the old ballgame on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
The Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds out of time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and today we're welcoming distant neighbors.
Do we ever have visitors from the edge of the solar system?
Yes. In autumn and winter are perfect seasons to see their fiery trails.
Meteor showers are produced by comets, primordial balls of dusty ice that they're
the sun's powerful gravity draws in from remote regions of our solar system.
When the earth flies through a comet's messy trail at 67,000 miles per hour,
bits of ancient dust and rock burn through our atmosphere,
leaving fiery streaks of ionized gas in their wake.
Named after the constellations from which they appear to come,
several meteor showers are active the entire month of October,
including the drakenids which peak on the 8th,
the Torids peaking on the 10th, and the Orionids peaking the 21st.
That's your Astro Minute.
Welcome back to Muddywater Stadium for this game between Hillsdale College and Walsh football as we approach two minutes till kickoff.
Paul?
Yeah, I'm really excited to see this.
Everybody's out for a homecoming football game.
Hillsdale always has a great crowd for homecoming games.
Tailgates outside is always a great time.
and our captains for today's game are number four Matt Soderdoll,
number 26 Logan Van Eckfort, number 87 Ty Williams,
and number 96 Landon Van Beek.
And the captains are now at the center of the field for the coin toss.
Paul, if you're Hillsdale here, do you go heads or do you go tails?
I don't know.
Maybe they have a tradition.
They always goes heads or tails, but I'm more of a heads man myself.
Yeah, so...
Welcome to the day's game between Washington University and Hillsdale College.
So Hillsdale wearing those navy blue uniforms, Walsh, with white tops and those kind of gray bottoms, the coin toss is underway.
And it looks like Hillsdale wins the toss and chooses to defer in this one.
They're going to be defending the north end.
Looks like they're going to be defending the south end zone in this one.
Well, and as you mentioned, George, those Navy uniforms with those all white.
helmet looks pretty crisp on the Hillsdale Chargers.
And as we get ready to start this game off,
let's preview the kick returner, punt returner,
Shea Ruddy, which if he takes this ball out,
he's going to be over 1,000 yards on the season.
And really only five game, this being the sixth game for the Chargers this season.
Yeah, I mean, we didn't get to him in our pregame show,
but Shea Ruddy, definitely a stud.
He's only a sophomore for the Hillsdale Chargers.
Had a great year last year.
Definitely broke out on the scene as a true freshman.
but this year just one of the top players in the G-Mac.
Look for him.
I would even say Division 2.
I mean, he's second in all-purpose yards in Division 2 at 9-92 right now.
Leads the team in receiving yards with 361 yards and then 487 on kickoff returns.
But Chargers being the ones that kickoff will have to wait a little longer.
Walsh has their deep man, Joanne Jackson, back.
His long on the season is 30.
I think 34 yards as number 46 kicker for the Chargers gets set for kickoff.
Yeah, Evan Mick kicking off for the Chargers.
It's been our kickoff specialist for a long time,
but recently took over place kicking duties for field goals and extra points.
And does a little dance.
Got to get the muscles loose.
Evan Mick going in for the run-up.
And we are underway here at Muddywater Stadium.
It's a ball that Jackson will return across the 20 yard line, cuts right.
He has a man going down field, cuts back to the left side, across the 45 to the 50,
to the 45 to the 40 off the left side, one man to beat,
and he does get him, gets tackled down at the 15-yard line in plus territory of the Chargers.
However, we do have a flag on the play, and it looks like we will find out what this is shortly,
and the Hillsdale defense is walking out to...
Two fouls on the play, both by the receiving team.
Oh, both flags are on the play, are on the Walsh Cavaliers, and it will be pulled back.
Yeah, very fortunate for the chargers there, because that's not the way you want to start your homecoming game.
Instead, it looks like they're going to be inside the 25.
As the student section cheers, you can't do that for Walsh backed up in their own territory.
Yeah, very close for Hillsdale, as they almost let the kick returner take.
get all the way back. He only got to the 15, but thankfully they catch a break here, and now the
ball is spotted at the 15-yard line. And it looks like T.C. Mulk is going to come out for Walsh.
Let's see if the Chargers can get him under pressure and not let him go 16 for 16 like he did last week.
Running back to the right, takes a snap out of the shotgun formation, running back, running back, running off the right side.
Punches forward to the 20-yard line. That'll be a gain of about...
Five yards. About a five-yard game for... Who's the running back out there?
Number six, Cameron McCone.
Memorne McCann starting running back, broke off a 70-yard, five-yard run on the first play from scrimmage against Lake Erie.
And second and five, like you heard, two wide receivers out, left, one out to the right in shotgun formation.
Macon to the right, takes a snap, handoff middle.
McCon breaks three and surges across the 25-yard line to the 27.
Those chains will move.
It'll be first in 10 for Walsh.
Yeah, as we mentioned earlier, this is definitely going to be the pace that the
game is going to go. We mentioned that Walsh is going to be running that football a lot. And so far,
starting off with two run plays for over 10 yards. They've already got a first down. I think this is
going to be the way their offense is going to be rolling for most of this game. And that's why we
picked Spurling and Toki as the player of the game or my player of the game. They've got to be able to
stop that run inside. Walsh trips right, one receiver left out of the shotgun formation,
Mackon to the right, takes his nap, play action, fake screen, airs the ball out deep.
And it is caught on the sideline by number 12.
Oh, no.
Garrett Wade.
He waves it off, says it's out of bounds.
Well, we'll call that a good defensive play by Hillsdale's defense number six.
Will Wims will credit him for the breakup there, but it looked like he had a little separation.
And that is the first incompletion of T.C. Moulke's season, like I mentioned earlier, going a perfect 16 for 16 last week.
Yeah, Will Wims starting out at the strong safety position in on coverage on that.
That one kind of picks up the receiver running deep on the go route and, you know, comes out with a defensive stop.
Luckily, because he's out of bounds.
Walsh in shotgun formation with running back to the right takes a snap, hands off middle, and he powers ahead.
Looks like he gets about 10 there across the almost to the 40-yard line, and they will move those chains.
That's three straight.
That's not even a loaded set.
You have spreading the little spread offense getting the chargers out in space and, you know, forcing those in the middle.
Looks like they're running a little bit of a four-three right now.
And so far, Hillsdale hasn't had an answer for that draw play.
Walshers definitely doing a good job blocking and making holes for the running back to slice through and get those big yards.
Shotgun formation, two wide receivers right, one to the left, takes a snap.
Play action pass, land across the middle and overthrown.
It looked like he had a step on Matt Soderdale.
Matt Sodergall, who is the most experienced corner for the Chargers, has had a really good season.
Actually, two weeks ago, he went over 100 tackles for his career at Hillsdale has been a stud since he walked on campus.
Yeah, also Will Wims almost deflected that pass jumping up.
He was in a lower zone and just got it past him, but overthrow his wide receiver on that play.
Shotgun formation, two wide receivers to the left, two to the right.
We got a running back to the right side.
Motion Man goes to the right, little jet sweep action to the right, gets north-south across the 40, almost to the 45-yard line for a three-yard.
Yeah, jet sweep there to the wide receiver, Brady Gooding.
Freshman who's definitely a deep ball threat, but on this one, they throw them around the end for a nice jet sweep for a gain of a couple yards.
And if you'll notice, Dante Walker, their number two running back was in the game.
They'll be doing a lot of switching.
Something to watch is Muddywater Stadium gets actually relatively loud for this third and four from the, looks like the, we'll call it the 44 yard line.
they go spread.
One rider receiver right, three to the left.
Shotgun formation takes a snap.
Does a little slam play out of the slot.
Walsh wants a flag, but they will not get it.
Yeah, quarterback T.C. Molke looking for a flag there,
but does not get it as he throws it right through his receiver's hands.
And that was a close one there.
And it looks like the punt team is coming out for Walsh.
And we'll get to see Shea ready on the field,
getting his first punt return of this game.
And maybe he'll cross over 1,000.
all-purpose yards on this play.
Absolutely. And if we're going to look at
the punter, four, did we put
the punter on here? We've got to get the
punter love. Garrett Cashner, second
team, old G-Mack punter. He hit a 66
yarder last week.
Shea Reddy sets up
shop around the 20-yard line, so we'll
see if that's deep enough. And the snap,
rush is good, almost
blocked by the Chargers, low punt.
Shea-ready will take the return.
Jukes a few defenders, but
only has probably four or five yards on
the return as it takes a team of Walsh defenders to take him down.
Yeah, they all group up around him.
And as George mentioned early on in that play, the Chargers really blitzed that kick,
and one of them almost got there deflecting that ball, but he got it through.
Kick was a little wobbly, but did the job getting the Chargers just past the 20-yard line
in their own territory.
And like we said, Cullen McCurnan is the quarterback, the redshirt freshman from Brighton, Michigan,
and the Chargers line up, one wide receiver out left,
two or one outright, two to the left as we face the North End Zone.
Takes a snap in motion man, Shay Ruddy, QB power to the right side,
and it looks like they pick up about three yards.
Two, three yards on that, yeah.
Yeah, I think that's, you know, with the charges,
it's always going to be dangerous when you have Shea going in motion.
Linebackers really have to respect.
You want to keep the linebacker, Cam Hollabaw on his heels.
can't let this team tee off that has had a lot of success,
10 sacks already in five games.
As they go, two wide receivers out left, one out right,
running back off left side.
Shea Ruddy is in motion.
He'll stop and go back to the right side.
Takes a snap.
Drops back to throw, three-step drop over the middle,
and that is Kappa, number 23.
Connor Pratt.
Number two wide receiver for the Chargers this season,
and had a 14-yard touchdown last week.
against Northward that proved to be the difference in the game.
As the Chargers look to keep this drive going, right around the 42-yard line,
trying to get across midfield on this one.
This Chargers offense loves putting Shay Ruddy in motion.
He's definitely a very dangerous distraction,
whether or not he's going to get the ball or not,
and it always puts the defense on its toes.
As the snap, fake handoff, little RPO to Shea Ruddy, and that's overthrown.
It looked like they had him on a, a lot of.
little out route towards the sideline. Yeah, a nice little hitch route there towards the
sideline for Shea ready, but the ball is overthrown. He turns up to try to snag it, but to no avail.
And this will be second and ten for the Chargers. Let's call it the 42-yard line.
We talked about that offensive line up front, missing one of the aftor's, yeah.
Missing one of the afflter's, but looking to be dominant up front, we've only seen that one
run play so far. We got three, we got a tight end and two wide receivers out.
left running back directly off to the left takes a snap little play action and caught by shay ruddy
that'll be enough 42 yeah that should be enough to get him over a thousand all-purpose yards this
season so congratulations to shay ruddy for passing that mark second most all-purpose yards in division
two football we'll see if that stands after today and they'll take him out of the game
coach giving him the high five yeah this guy he's first in all-purpose yards in the g-mac he's the
receiver on this Chargers offense and he'll definitely be a weapon for this team for the years to come.
And we got two tight ends, a little power formation here with a wide receiver split out right,
takes a snap little pitch out left and makes one man miss, gets a necessary third and one conversion.
The Chargers are in plus territory at Walsh's 44-yard line.
Yeah, a nice explosive run there from running back Kyle Riffel just punches through that offensive
line to get that first down. I wonder if they'll be trying to run outside a little more today with
the defensive line including Cody Henry, Kyler Lerosa, and Nate Watkins, which have been pretty
solid all year. The defense has only allowed 124 rushing yards per game against teams that have
tried to run the ball a lot against them. As we got two wide receivers out to the right, a tight end
in on the left. Motion Man 17 takes a snap, fake jet suite, power left side, and he punches ahead
for about two, three yards to the 41 yard line of Walsh as Reddy checks back into the game.
As we talked about that Walsh defensive line, Cody Henry, already two tackles for a loss this season,
two sacks and two forced fumbles, not this season rather, against Wheeling,
which is a game that they narrowly lost.
Yeah, it looks like we've got Ben Affalter starting at center this time,
and his younger brother, Zach Affalter,
as the snap is little pitch to the left side,
number 26, finds a little room to run,
and that's going to be a ten-yard pickup for the Chargers,
bringing them across the 30-yard line,
and those chains will move.
Chargers just methodically going down the field
that have been able to show that they've primarily passing,
but have been able to pick up yards when they need to on the ground,
which has been something that's been lacking this season.
Only have...
Chargers have only had
80 rush yards per game on the season
which has not been what they wanted to do
2.6 yards per carry
as spread offense takes a snap
fake handoff looking to throw across the middle
oh caught up between the knees
number 18 as we start to get a little drizzle
here at Muddywater Stadium
yeah wide receiver tuck carrico on that catch
and very nice play
the Chargers offense just rolling right now
taking little chunk plays, not just blowing it all out in one big play, doing it one step at a time,
marching down the field, trying to get that first points on the board.
And they're really taking their time, making the substitutions they need.
But really, it looks like any play that they've drawn up, they've been able to get a couple yards off of it.
A pretty solid balance, too, run pass.
As you've got a little pistol formation with two running backs left and right, two wide receivers split out on the right side,
takes the snap, hands it out on the left side, little power running.
and oh, looks like he gets about five yards after contact there,
and that'll be enough for the first down, six-yard pickup,
as the Chargers are now in the red zone.
Yeah, and that's our third running back we've seen for the Hillsdale Chargers.
That was number 21, Zach Tetler.
As we mentioned earlier, this is going to be running back by committee for both teams,
and the Chargers have already pulled out three different running backs
with three very important first-down runs for those running backs.
as little shotgun formation with a running back directly behind the quarterback.
Two wide receivers split out right, a tight end in bunch towards the offensive line, takes a snap.
Fake handoff.
Shee Ruddy across, but the quarterback will tuck and slide down for about a six-yard game.
Looks like about seven yards there.
And, yeah, busted play, no-pass options for the quarterback, Colin, as he just finds a whole.
in the offensive line and runs it out and slides before he takes that hit.
Yeah, I mean, a great play when there wasn't a lot there.
And second down, we got two wide receivers out left.
Quarterback, again, with the running back directly behind him.
Shotgun formation takes the snap, hands it off left side.
Looks like a little bit of a hole powers through, and that'll be enough for the first down.
Looks like, depending where they spot it.
Yep, first down, first and goal for the chargers from the eight-yard line, seven-yard line.
as they'll bring in a little bit more of a power formation, power set.
Yeah, I mean, Colin McCurn and going back to that previous play,
breaking the pocket, I think that's something that is going to make him dangerous
against a Walsh team that tends to tee off on the past plays.
Got to make him guard more people.
For sure, for sure.
Two wide receivers split out right, one left,
running back off the left side, tight end in motion,
but he'll stay on the right side, running back to the left,
handoff and he runs along the right side has some blockers and he will find that edge and get in for
a charger touchdown eight yard scamper by is that Logan van Ingebert yeah Logan van ecbert i called him as
my game changing charger and he proves it right here he proves me right it's a nice uh six seven yard
scamper for a touchdown and he's definitely got the chargers on the board and looking to take the
win here on homecoming week and last week special team player of the week Evan Mick out to attempt
the field goal he was two for two last week against Northwood in his first start as the place kicker
and he looks to keep that perfect streak alive here today lining up the kick he's got the mismatch cleat
for the the soccer cleat ball is up and it is good for the PAT Chargers seven Walsh zero this is

Well, we won't be needing that because you can still get all of Radio Free Hillsdale's great shows and features online at Radio Freehillsdale.com under the student shows and features tab or wherever you get your podcast.
Anytime, anywhere.
All right then.
Let's hit the road.
And Evan Mick to kick this ball off for the Chargers second time of the day.
Return Man back deep, left side, across the 20-yard line, stops and slides.
down at the 18 can't get to the 25 you would get if you fair catch and there's another flag
second flag on walsh's presumably special teams unit hear the call
third return illegal block in the back we're seeing team number 48 after this and
yeah yet again yet again walsh is having problems on their special teams uh return team another
penalty that's actually their third because there were two on that first kickoff of the game
and we're looking at backed up against their own
end zone. The tailback is just one yard shy of the end zone line and tough sledding for the
Walsh offense to start off their drives because of some costly penalties. Absolutely. We got two
wide receivers out left on the short side of the field. One right on the long side takes a snap,
fake handoff little wide receiver screen makes the first man miss across the 20 yard line and that'll
be enough for a first down. Maybe a little bit of a late hit is what the flag is going to be after
taking out of bounds and another charger looks like he hits him late.
And that's one thing that I think Hillsdale has to work on this game
is they have been a relatively penalized team
with 53.2 yards of penalties per game.
First foul, leg hit out of bounds.
Defense over 12.
15-year penalty, first out.
Yeah, that's exactly the call George late hit out of bounds
and that's going to be a costly one for the chargers as they back up.
And, I mean, that was a very hectic play there.
with a lot of guys steaming downfield on that screenplay,
but you got to be aware and know when the guy's out of bounds there.
Otherwise, it's going to cost you like it did right now.
Yeah, and Walsh is going to spread it out again here.
One wide receiver left, two, right, running back left side.
Little read option, a quarterback pulls it,
and T.C. Mollock only picks up four yards there.
It looked like he had a little bit more space.
There wasn't the Reed man,
but linebacker was able to pick up the pieces.
Yeah, looks like Jacob Vance was there on the 10.
tackle and really drove into him.
Good form tackle there and
stops the quarterback in his tracks.
Yeah, when in doubt it's probably Jacob Vance
when we're calling this game because he is everywhere
on the field as only a sophomore,
if that's right, yeah.
So that'll bring up second and six for Walsh,
running back right behind the quarterback.
Fake handoff looks like a little four verticals,
little flag play on the play,
and the quarterback will run, pick up
five yards, but it looks like maybe a defensive
of holding in the second dairy there.
And we'll see what the call is, but...
Yeah, it looks like there was busted a pocket right there,
and he rolled out and ended up picking a couple yards.
But it looks like a defensive lineman, or Evan Benick,
is out with some sort of arm energy.
Number two, 10-yard penalty will be out into the end of the run.
First out.
Yeah, and that's a 10-yard penalty being that it is college,
and that'll be enough to bring Walsh across the 50-yard line.
So already 25 yards of penalties on this drive for the Chargers for a Walsh team that was backed up at their 8-yard line.
Coach can't be very happy about that.
Yeah, now the Walsh offense is across middle field at the 55- or 45-yard line in the Chargers territory.
And three wide receivers out left, one to the right, takes a snap, and a little delayed handoff action,
squirts through the line and picks up four or five yards on that play to the 40-yard line,
as we have four minutes and 10 seconds left in this first quarter,
which has gone relatively fast.
Clark has kept moving,
keeping the ball on the ground for the most part,
or completed passes.
But T.C. Mulk, yeah, we ruined his perfect,
Hillsdale ruined his perfect passing.
16 for 16 performance last week.
Was not able to continue that this week.
As we got two wide receivers to the right side,
to the left, motion man, fake jet sweep.
And he's taken down,
but he's able to get the ball away for about a three-yard gain.
and yeah ball's placed at the 35 yard run right there that's going to bring up third and short for walsh
it does look like the rain has stopped which will help these teams as they try to air the ball out but
both of these teams are just running the football as george mentioned and that really runs down the clock
and makes these types of games go very quickly we've got a tight end on the inside presumably to block
hopefully this charger's defensive line can patch the gaps takes a snap fake handoff little wide receiver
screen and not much there but it looks like it'll be enough about a 40 yard game to get that
first shoot down keep those chains moving now almost to the 30 yard line of hillsdale yeah right there
nice uh screen pass out to wide receiver tray martin for the walsh cavaliers after that play action
as tc moulks trying to get his offensive lineman's attention two wide receivers out left one out
right running back directly on that left side and that's going to be jake gill again that running back
by committee takes the snap fake handoff again and gets the tight end on a little oh fumble on the play and
the chargers have the ball number 25 for the chargers that's going to be vance francis gow and it is a
fumble ruled as a catch for uh tight end number 87 stephen gilland for the walsh cavaliers but he
drops that ball and the the chargers just scoop it up
up. Good awareness by Vance Francisco right there on the play. And now the Chargers are at their own 20-yard line.
Yeah, it looked like a good play to kind of get under that zone by the tight end, but you just got to hold onto that ball.
Yeah, definitely. Coming up clutch there for the Chargers, that Walsh offense was definitely rolling down the field and look like they were going to score on that drive.
They were in field goal territory, but you were hoping to prevent the touchdown, and that's just what the Chargers defense did.
Chargers 7, Walsh is zero as we come up on two minutes in the first quarter.
Tight end in motion running back on the right side.
Wide receivers bunched on the left side takes a snap.
Finds that tight end on almost the same play.
It makes it across the 40 to the 45, almost to midfield for our tight end,
which hasn't seen a lot of action.
Number 87, Stephen Gillen.
Yeah, definitely a big play there for the Chargers going from the 21-yard line to about the 46-yard line.
big gain of 25 yards there and that was a tight end Andrew no Stephen
Oh it was Stephen Gilland no that's the Walsh tight end oh Walsh Titan never mind
got the the wrong play call sheet but yeah Hillsdale in pistol formation now
one wide receiver split out right we got the tight end on the left side quarterback
barking out signals to his offensive line takes the snap almost dropped it
but he will run forward and it looks like a little bit of a broken play,
but he'll pick up five yards on it,
maybe a little late extracurricular activities.
There is a flag on the field.
Yeah, and offensive lineman number 61, Billy Collins,
had lost his helmet on that play as a result of that extracurricular activity.
That'll be defensive hands to the face,
which will move the ball 15 yards.
And he will not have to come out of the game.
And he will not have to come out of the face.
the game because the helmet coming off was not was a part of a penalty so just like that the
chargers it looked like walsh was going to maybe not up this game now it looks like the churches have
a chance to score about 15 yards outside of field goal range at the 35 yard line maybe 10 outside of
field goal range we got shay ready back in the game split out right we got two wide receivers on the left
running back directly to the left of the quarterback and cullen sends his tight end in motion
takes the snap out of the shotgun formation.
Five-step drop.
Looks deep.
He has ruddy, and there's a flag on the play.
It was broken up by number 29.
Jeffrey Mold, and he is not happy about that flag,
that flag that was thrown.
No, as soon as he gets up, he sees that there's a flag on the field,
and he throws his hands up in the air and spins around and yells something to the ref,
but not happy at all.
That ball was a little short, and as a result, that flag back.
No foul.
Well, I don't think it's fair to say that because he's complaining that they pulled the flag back.
But yeah.
No.
From the booth, it actually looked like pretty good coverage.
Maybe got there a little early.
We're not referees in this game, thankfully.
But second and 10 for the Chargers from the 33-yard line.
And I do have a correction to make that 25-yard gain for the Chargers was, in fact, half-back Ty Williams on the catch.
and it was not the tight end.
Shotkin formation ruddy in motion.
They'll give it to him on a sweep around the left side.
Jukes makes a couple of guys miss,
and that'll be a five-yard game that probably should have been only two or three.
So I think that's, you know, the Chargers on the catch-and-run you had,
the 25-yard game that maybe should have been 10.
And that's going to be the key to this game is being able to get those catch-and-runs,
fighting off, making the first-man miss.
Yeah, now you've got a crucial third and six coming up right now for the Chargers.
they're just inside the 30-yard line in their own territory
and if they can get this then they have a good shot to get another touchdown
and go up 14-0-0 on the Walsh Cavaliers.
Two wide receivers out right, one out left, takes a snap,
running back stays in pass protecting.
He'll throw the pocket and he'll throw deep has Ruddy in for the touchdown
but there is a flag on the play.
We'll see what that is.
As for now it's 14-0 Hillsdale.
It might be coming back though.
Yeah, flag was definitely in the backfield.
We'll see what that is.
Looks like the refs are bringing the ball back, and we'll hear shortly what that was.
There are two fouls on the play, one on each team.
Holding, offense number 51, holding, defense number eight.
Those 30s offset.
So it's going to be all that for nothing.
Replaying that third down is we have 33 seconds left in this first quarter.
The score is seven, Hillsdale, Walsh has nothing.
as you continue to listen to Charger football.
But this third and seven, yeah, huge for the Chargers.
It might be in field goal range.
It's going to be a long 46-47-yarder if they do choose to attempt it.
But you'd like to get it here.
Two wide receivers out right, one out left.
Tight end, kept in maybe to block on the right side.
Running back right side stays into block.
Takes a snap, three-step drop, errs it out on the right side.
And Hillsdale wants a holding penalty.
Definitely won a passing interference call right.
there. The crowd is not happy.
Wide receiver Connor Pratt
was the target for that one, but
no luck there for the Hillsdale faithful.
As the offense stays out on the field, we expected
this might happen being that fourth and six, it's going to be a long
field goal. Maybe it is a little slippery on the field.
We're not out there to know the conditions, but
yeah, that would have been huge. It would have brought the ball to the 10-yard
line. So fourth and six for the Chargers,
we've got a little trips right by the offensive line,
and that'll be double as the tight end goes in motion.
One wide receiver out left takes a snap.
Three step drop.
Looking for number 10 and that ball is overthrown.
Maybe could have gotten a holding, defensive holding
with a little bit better of a ball there.
And the Chargers turn it over on downs.
We'll see T.C. Molt come back for his third drive.
First drive ending in a pun second, in a fumble, in the red zone, actually.
Yeah, quarterback Colin McCurton right there.
He overthrows his wide receiver.
after that great pass to Shea Ruddy, he struggled there with those past last two throws to his wide receivers.
That one on the play was Ryan Scura, was the target, and now the Walsh Cavaliers come back out onto the field.
Yeah, as T.C. Moll comes out with Cameron Mack on, the number one back.
Two wide receivers out right, one far, far out to the left near the sideline, takes the snap.
And it looks like a little RPO action on a quick slant near the 40-yard line.
and we'll see how they mark that maybe a second and two.
Yeah, wide receiver grant night on the catch there.
But we'll see if they take this to the end of the quarter as we're at five seconds left.
It looks like Walsh will be content not snapping the ball.
Hillsdale Chargers 7, Walsh Zero.
You're listening to Chargers football on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the old ball game where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime.
I'm Tate Christensen. Today we take a look at baseball cards. In the mid-1800s, baseball and photography
were both becoming popular, so baseball teams would often have their pictures taken. Soon, some of
these photos appeared in wallet-sized editions, but they soon became a means of advertising.
Companies began printing cards with baseball pictures on one side and advertising on the other.
Most of these companies were cigarette companies. The oldest surviving card is from the Brooklyn
in Atlantis around 1860.
But the most famous baseball card of all time,
often called the Mona Lisa of baseball cards,
is the 1911 American Tobacco Company card of Honest Wagner.
Wagner was one of the greatest hitters and defensive players of his time.
His card was rare due to his objection to the use of his image for commercial purposes.
In 2022, the card sold for $7.25 million.
This has been the old ball game on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
As we welcome you back inside of Muddywater Stadium,
And Walsh is in spread formation with five wide receivers at their own 35-yard line heading towards the north end zone.
Takes a snap, three-step drop.
He's going to try to run.
It looks like a holding penalty is thrown.
For now, it's a first down across the 45-yard line, but let's see if that one comes back.
B.C. Molding, offense, number 71, 10-yard penalty.
And that is going to be a holding penalty.
That cannot be what Walsh wants.
You know, they had a second and two, look to get ahead of schedule,
trying to keep that running game going.
And with second and 12, you have a lot less options with what you can do on offense.
Yeah, some nice creativity there for the quarterback TC Mulk,
but it is to no avail as his offensive lineman was holding there.
As Walsh looks to line up with a similar formation,
we got three wide receivers out left this time, one right,
running down on the right side of the quarterback.
And he takes a snap.
throws a quick, looks like a curl route to maybe a tight end,
wide receiver trying to strip the ball,
but that'll bring up third and six from the 34-yard line of Walsh.
Yeah, and it looks like we have some updates from around the G-Mack.
We've got Ashland still up 27 to 7 in the third quarter
as this third down comes up for the Walsh Cavaliers.
Yeah, and that's good to hear actually looking to upset Finlay, but right now we got a game here.
Two wide receivers out left, one out right, takes the snap.
Three step drop, oh, he's under duress, but he has a lot of space to run across the 45-yard line to the 50, to the 40.
He could go all the way to the 30, to the 20, to the 10, one man to beat, and that he'll be in for a touchdown.
Wow.
Massive broken play there that the quarterback Mulk just turns into a touchdown.
Incredible.
He had blockers down the field.
his wide receivers immediately recognized what was going on and they kept those charges defenders pinned
allowing him to run right to the corner and then last second reverse direction right into the end zone
for a touchdown yeah and they have a kicker trend doer floor out for the p a t looking to knot this up
he's 25 out of 26 on p a t's in his college career hoping to make that charger faithful hoping that's
25 out of 27 soon the kick is up and that is good
So the score is now nodded up seven Hillsdale, seven Walsh, as we continue in this second quarter with Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds out of time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and today we're welcoming distant neighbors.
Do we ever have visitors from the edge of the solar system?
Yes.
In autumn and winter are perfect seasons to see their fiery trails.
Meteor showers are produced by comets, primordial balls of dusty ice that the sun's
powerful gravity draws in from remote regions of our solar system.
When the Earth flies through a comet's messy trail at 67,000 miles per hour,
bits of ancient dust and rock burn through our atmosphere,
leaving fiery streaks of ionized gas in their wake.
Named after the constellations from which they appear to come,
several meteor showers are active the entire month of October,
including the Draconids, which peak on the 8th,
the Torids peaking on the 10th,
and the Orionids peaking the 21st.
That's your Astro Minute.
And we are back at Muddywater Stadium in Hillsdale, Michigan.
An absolutely beautiful day.
The rain has held off with seven Hillsdale, seven Walsh.
Hillsdale had been holding pretty steady until a 60-plus yard rush by quarterback T.C.
Mulk, his second in his many weeks.
As we look for kickoff, we're at Ty Ruddy back deep as the return man.
Yeah, an impressive 66-yard run for Mulk.
but hopefully the Chargers can turn around on this offensive possession.
And Ruddy takes it from the 10.
Oh, a little reverse on the kickoff.
And there is no one there for Walsh except number 23 at the 40-yard line at the 45.
A little trickery there.
Everyone was selling out for Ruddy as they should with the explosiveness.
And they're able to do a little end around there.
Yeah, he flips the ball number 11.
Gavin Chevney, Shevri.
And he just takes it around and runs it out to the
the 46 yard line in Chargers territory.
Massive trick play on a kickoff and that got the crowd hyped up and now we look for the Chargers to score that touchdown.
Yeah, Chargers looking to get a quick score to go up by a possession.
As shotgun formation running back right, two wide receivers out left, one out right takes the snap.
It's going to be a little read option, but there are two people that meet him immediately.
Maybe a tackle for a loss there for Walsh, but there is a flag.
Let's see what that is.
personal foul chop lock offense number six one and 67 15 yards only first down and we got a chop lock on the chargers and that'll set them back far behind schedule on this play again i mean the chargers have 40 yards of penalties already in the first quarter and two minutes so um something that they'll need to clean up if not at halftime you know as soon as possible the 15 yard penalty will make it
second and 25 for the chargers.
We got three wide receivers out left,
running back off the right for number 13.
Colin McCurnan takes the snapshot ready in motion,
and a little QB keeper on this play takes it about three yards.
We'll bring up a second in 22.
Yeah, this charger O-line has done a good job blocking,
but definitely those penalties are starting to hurt now.
So while they have blocked very well so far this game,
they definitely need to clean it up in terms of,
of penalties and infractions.
Well, and exactly.
I mean, you don't want the momentum to shift.
It looked like the chargers were going to get a stop,
and then you had that 60-plus-yard run by T.C. Mulk.
They really could use a big play right here.
As he got two wide receivers out left, one out right.
Shotcome formation, Shy Roddy in motion from right to left as we face the south end zone.
Takes the snap.
Looks left.
Pocket is breaking.
And, oh, Shy Ruddy on the deep play.
That'll get much more than 20%.
The 25-yard line to the 22.
Massive catch and massive throw.
Beautiful ball thrown by quarterback Colin McCurnan,
just right over the defender.
It looked like that defender was going to jump up and pick it,
but he just seemed to miss it,
and it falls right into the hands of Shea Ruddy on that play.
Yeah, and that's why I didn't react right away
because it looked like it was going to be a pick,
but he jumped up.
He must have thought so, too, because he sold out.
Maybe he could have gotten a pass break up there,
but great route, great communication between Ruddy and his quarterback.
Now it looks like they're going to go a little eye formation,
keep the formation tight with two wide receivers right against that offensive line.
Takes a snap, a little pitch play off the right side,
patiently waits for that to develop where he does a little front flip to get about five yards,
bringing up second and five.
Yeah, that was a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch by Ty Ruddy right there,
and it puts the chargers in the run zone now after that rushing play by Zach Tetler.
Definitely looking to score this time after failing.
in their last time down the field on offense.
Yeah, and Tetler will stay in the game in shotgun formation right behind his quarterback with two wide receivers to the left.
Takes a snap, and he'll get the ball again.
Patiently wait, sees the hole, cuts it up to the left side.
First through, and that is a touchdown for your Hillsdale Chargers.
Nice 20-yard run from Zach Tetler there.
Beautiful blocking by the Hillsdale line, as I mentioned earlier.
They've been playing a pretty good game so far.
They just need to...
Looks like they were able to get to blockers to the second level,
which is something that's super important,
given the linebacker call of Rocco Iacino and Cam Halibath,
which have been game records so far in their first five games.
Now, Evan Mick on to attempt the extra point.
Yeah, Evan Mick, definitely keeping the chargers perfect in their extra points
ever since he started last week, and he gets yet another one.
That kick is up and good, and just like,
that it is 14 Hillsdale 7 Walsh as we continue on with our broadcast with Hillsdale Charger

As the Chargers look to kick it away, we're in Hillsdale, Michigan, Muddywater Stadium.
Evan Mick with a run-up, and the kick is hit to about the five-yard line.
Return Man takes it up the right side. Looks like there's a little bit of a hole, but special
teams for the Charger gets there one-on-one tackle, and the Better Man wins.
22-yard line is where Walsh will set up shot up for
I believe their fifth drive of the game.
Yeah, dragged down right about the 21, 22 yard line.
The refs have spotted the ball at the 22.
Definitely a good play by the Hillsdale Chargers special teams.
We saw some explosiveness from the Walsh Cavaliers on special teams,
but penalties have unfortunately set them back,
and Chargers shut them down on this kickoff.
Yeah, right now Chargers are winning in the special teams category
as it looks like you got two wide receivers out right, one left for Walsh.
T.C. Mulk for his third drive takes a snap.
And a little power run, but not much there is going to be about a three-yard gain for Walsh.
Met at the line by the Chargers defense and powers for a couple yards, but definitely cannot break away on that one.
It looked like a little bit of Hunter Spurling and Christian Hermero for that one.
second down and seven we'll call it at the 25 yard line tc mouk with three ride receivers out right one out left
running back directly to his right takes a snap fake handoff wide receiver screen is in the dirt for
number 19 wide receiver tray martin only has two catches this season but does did have a 46 yarder last week against
lake erie transferring from rival ashlin who is looking to avoid an upset right now or looking to upset
right now, rent number 20 in Division 2.
27-7 is the last update we know about that.
As we get a third and seven, this charger defense really needs to hold here if they want to
go up a couple possessions in this game and really capture on that momentum from that
left scoring drive.
Two wide receivers outright, tight end is in to block.
Takes a snap.
Has a while, and he airs it out deep for number three who comes down with it across the 40-yard
line into plus territory the 35 who is that number three is anthony harris he was co-freshment of the year
in 2023 with over 600 yards receiving and walsh will get up to the line a little no huddle maybe they
like the personnel that hillsdale is in and think they can beat it hillsdale has six little
pass to the running back off the left side and that's going to be about a seven-yard gain
we'll call it second and six yeah beautiful ball right now
it there by the quarterback Mulk. He just airs it out. And what a catch right there. Defender was
right over his shoulder, draped over him, and he still pulls that ball in for a big catch,
taking him down to about the 35-yard line.
Yeah, and Paul's talking about that previous play, which is probably a pickup of 40, 45 yards.
I don't know exactly where the ball placement is. But you got two wide receivers on the
short side of the field. One far out right takes a snap, a little wide receiver screen that they've
been going back to, and he's wrapped up for about a three, four-yard gain.
Bringing up third down for the Chargers, third and two.
Yeah, I mean, they've loved this short pass all game.
They seem to run the ball or throw the ball out on nice little screens or flats for their wide receivers.
And it's been very effective for them.
They've getting little chunk yardage that makes third down nice and manageable for this offense for the Walsh Cavaliers.
Two wide receivers right, two to the left.
We got number three who made the big catch in motion, takes the snap out of the shotgun formation.
and a little out route number three
Anthony Harris cannot hold that one in
he had a lot of space to make the catch
looks like he beat the zone there
and that's going to bring up fourth and two for the charger
or excuse me fourth and two for the Welsh Cavaliers
and they're keeping that offense out on the field
and now they send in the field goal unit
yeah that big pass play was 41 yards
for quarterback Mulk to his wide receiver
number three
Anthony Harris
and now they're going to cash in on that big play
and try to put three points on the board.
And we have Trent Dewar Floor attempting the 48-yard field goal.
He made from 60 in practice,
so we'll see if he can hit it here.
The kick is up.
The signal is that it is good,
so it's going to be 14 Hillsdale, 10 Walsh,
nine minutes remaining in the second quarter before half.
This is Hillsdale Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale,
101.7 FM.
This is The Making of America.

He single-handedly crushed Adolf Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy,

bringing him international acclaim.
Previously, at a Big Ten event, he had established four world records,

score is 14 Hillsdale 10 Walsh with nine minutes left in this second quarter the run-up and the ball is oh onside kick
sees a little gap that they like and that ball goes out of bounce which is very fortunate for the
chargers it looked like there must have been something in that return formation that they've studied in film
they saw that they want to try to go onside against that what did you see there paul yeah interesting
there he slowed down right before he kicked the ball and uh kind of gave a little bit of a tell and the
the special teams for the Chargers kind of reacted there.
But there was a flag on the play.
We'll see if they give us any information more.
Free kick out of bounds.
Oh, yeah, it's the out of balance.
Yeah, I think if Walsh pulls that off, I mean, there was a lot of space there.
It looked like their unit was compressed on the left side of the field.
It would have been like a six against three, Walsh against Hillsdale, but very fortunate.
And now they start with great ball position.
Definitely an interesting.
there the ball kind of went over that first line of the Chargers kick return and spinning the whole way and
spun right out of bounds as the sun pears through the clouds here at muddywater stadium one wide receiver
out left one out right running back right to the left that running back is 21 Zach Telter he runs
off the right side a little power and he has stopped immediately hit at the legs one guy got high one
guy got low and that's only a they're going to give him no yards there yeah met at the line for
no gain right there.
And Chargers
stuffed on that first play, but they have great
field position and hopefully they can cash in on this.
Yeah, it looks like that's Chris Jones
is going to add another tackle for a loss
if that's how they count it to his stat book.
He already has six this season, has forced
two turnovers.
So, you know, definitely a player to watch.
As the charges have two wide receivers
out left as we faith the north end zone,
one out right.
Tide end in motion takes the snap.
Five step drop.
A little tight end.
tight end screen and he had room to run it looked like across the middle of the field but that'll
bring out third and 10 for the chargers we haven't really seen the chargers in third and very long
yet this game will see how they approach that no we haven't and that seemed to be a little bit of
miscommunication on that play was definitely a screen play but did not look like the quarterback had a
receiver looking at him for the catch and he just threw that ball over the heads of the blockers
and right into the turf there well you got to have that next play mentality and it'll be
You're getting up third and 10.
Trips left, but right against that offensive line.
One wide receiver right, running back to the left side, takes a snap,
looks for the out route, but goes deep for Shea Ruddy,
who has opened across the 20 to the 10 to the 5.
Touchdown Hillsdale Chargers.
Little shaken bake there coming out of his route,
and he'll be able to score that,
putting the charges up 21 to 10.
Beautiful fade route from Shade Ruddy and perfectly placed football by Colin McCurnin,
just placing it right into his basket,
and defender falls over right as ruddy catches it and he avoids that nice attempt at a tackle by the defender there
and another six points on the board for the Hillsdale Chargers.
Yeah, great touch pass there by the quarterback Colin McCurnan.
Really, like Paul said, couldn't have put that ball any better.
Now we got Evan Mick again who we've heard a lot from for his PATs.
His on for the third one of the game.
Snap hold, kick is up and they're calling that good.
So the score is 8.21 Hillsdale, 10 Walsh. We got eight minutes left in the second quarter.
This is Hillsdale Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
This is The Making of America from the Jefferson Media Group.
In 1812, 41 years after the end of the Revolutionary War, Britain and America were at war again.
On August 24, 1814, British forces succeeded in occupying Washington, D.C.,
and quickly burned everything inside, including the Capitol and the White House.
President Madison was out of the city, but his wife, Dolly, worked to save as many treasures as possible,
including the full-length portrait of George Washington, which hangs in the White House today.
Stephen Pleasanton, a presidential appointee, was also able to prevent the British from burning some of history's most precious documents,
including the Declaration of Independence.
This has been the Making of America.
I'm Michael Emerson, and you can visit us at jeffersonmediagroup.com.
And we're back here in Hillsdale as Evan Mick runs up for the kickoff.
Walsh receiving 2110 in the lead and a fair catch signaled by Walsh.
We'll bring the ball out to the 25.
Maybe their kick return formation wasn't set up for a return like that on the left side
as they face this north end zone.
but T.C. Mulk, who hasn't had a great day looking to start something here from the 25-yard line for Walsh,
with eight minutes to go, see if they can sustain a drive here, which they've been unable to do.
Yeah, every drive they've had is puttered out except for that big run by quarterback Mulk for the Cavaliers.
And Chargers have had a lot of explosion on their offense with that last play and see if the Cavaliers can do the same.
And shotgun formation takes the snap.
Looks, pumps, fakes, looks deep.
And it looks a little underthrown.
Is that going to be, he caught it.
Oh, wow.
Number 21 for the Chargers defense.
Number 12, actually.
Number 12, Jack Tratchett.
And that's going to bring them across midfield all the way to the 34-yard line in plus territory.
That was definitely a busted play.
If you watch the quarterback, he turned to his right, but the running back was on his left.
I think it was most to be a play-action play there, but turns it into a one-term.
Wonderful pass play.
The snap, a little wide receiver screen again,
a missed tackle in the flat,
and he's pushed out of bounce after a three-yard gain.
That's Trey Martin.
Like I said, he only had two catches coming into this game,
but has already come up big for Walsh,
if only for making that catch right there.
Looked like he had him dead to rights in the secondary.
Yeah, maybe even an interception.
He threw that ball into double coverage,
and it looked pretty good for the Hillsdale defense,
but that wide receiver just comes up with the ball.
I think the front corner just jumped too early, Trach it, and the receiver got over him.
And shotgun formation, two-wide receivers right takes the snap.
Little fake handoff, and it is dropped by number 19.
And that is dropped by Trey Martin.
So they try to go back to Martin after his big play.
And now that brings up third and six for Walsh at the 29.
I think they're in field goal range if he hit from 47.
This would also be 47.
But they hit from around this area on the field last time on their offensive drive.
Of course they want a touchdown here.
Two tight ends off the right side.
One wide receiver left pitch play.
And that is stop off the right side.
Tried to get around the edge.
And number 25 on Hillsdale's defense,
Van Francisco was able to have him dead to rights there.
Also number 12, Jack Trachett, out on the play there, the free safety.
Making up for that miss in coverage against Trin.
Martin. So that'll bring out the field goal kicker. Looking to hit from, looks like 47 again.
We'll see if Hillsdale's defensive line can get a rush there, get a hand on this ball.
Presumably going to be pretty low. Takes a snap. Kick is up. And it looks like that is
no good. No good. Must have been wide right. Didn't really look that bad from this angle.

pesky grammar question
should you put a comma before and
as with all things English
the answer is it depends
in a list such as eggs milk and
cheese the comma before the

most style guides
all the correct ones anyway. Advocate using this comma to reduce confusion, although you can
technically leave it off. In a sentence with a dependent clause, such as, I read your note and was
delighted to hear the news, where there's no subject for that second verb, you don't need a
comma before and. If the clause were independent, meaning that the second half of the sentence
could stand alone as a full sentence, you do need the comma. Your sentence would read,
I read your note, and I was delighted to hear the news. That's your grandparent.

Well, we shouldn't have sent you off to break there being that it was a miss kick.
Turnover on downs.
So there was a play.
Shea Ruddy scampered for about 40 yards that was called back from a holding penalty.
So nothing lost there.
First and 20 for the Chargers at the 20 yard line, their own 20 yard line, facing an uphill battle here.
But remember, Shea Ruddy scored on the last second and 22 play.
I formation takes the snap, little pitch play.
and he's got blockers in front of him
across the 30 to the 35 to the 40
and that's a first down

man these chargers are just shredding through this
Walsh defense with some big plays
yeah this Walsh defense has actually been
so far this year they had been pretty solid
only allowing for example
they had only given up
14 points in their loss
to Wheeling which is a relatively
a strong, decent program.
They're two and three on the season.
But yeah, the church is really ripping through it.
As you got bunched up on the right and left side of the line,
you've got two wide receivers left, or two wide receivers right,
one on the left takes the snap of the shotgun formation,
three-step drop, looking deep, but he is sacked.
Did not see him coming on that right side of the offensive line.
Number 54 for the Walsh defense, that's going to be.
Nate Watkins, he was defensive newcomer of the year last year.
with four sacks and he transferred from a college that is now closed.
Alderson Broadus University.
So, you know, a big pickup for them and gets the chargers behind the chains.
Second and 14 ball on the 39.
Clock continues to run 4.45 in this second quarter.
Two wide receivers out right, one on the left on the short side of the field.
They'll put the tight end in motion while running back to the left side takes a snap.
Hands it to that running back and he has space to run.
And he will go across the 50.
Keeps pushing forward with that offensive lineman behind him.
Cross midfield across the 45 to the 43 and plus territory.
That's a big run from running back Zach Tetler.
Nice first down.
And the charges are going in to hurry up right here.
Shotgun formation and running back to the left side.
Two wide receivers, right.
One left takes a snap.
Hands it again to Tetler.
Looks like maybe the same play, but not the same result as maybe he gets a G.
yard there bringing up second and nine yeah the chargers have been in these long down situations
second and plus yards and they just keep finding a way to get out of it with these big plays
Logan and van Eckvert at the first play of this drive after that holding call and now we've got
Zach tetler with a nice run to put the chargers in Walsh territory there yeah Walsh looking if they
can get another sack here on this second and nine play looks like they're flattened
out the safety a little bit, have maybe eight in the box, takes the snap fake handoff,
and gets that tight end just on a little curl route, finds the weakness in the zone,
and that'll bring up third down for the chargers just outside a field goal range at the 35.
Yeah, caught right there by Ty Williams for a nice little gain, and it makes their third down
very manageable, only third and two. Yeah, and Ty Williams, technically on the roster as a halfback,
but I believe they utilize him more in that tight end position,
maybe kind of a little bit of a Kyle Jakuzawix type player.
That'll bring down third and two for the Chargers,
two wide receivers out right, one to the left.
Running back to the left side, that running back is Logan Van Incovert.
Takes a snap, hands it off to the running back.
Right side has room to run.
Gets to the second level, keeps on going across the 25 to the 21-yard line.
And again, this Chargers running attack keeps getting 10, 15, 20-yard gains.
I was not expecting this based on how last year, or in the previous five games,
they've only been averaging under 80 yards per game.
Well, if we're completely honest, George, they played some top schools in their first few games.
U-Indie, who is currently ranked in the top 25 in D2, as well as Finley and top conference opponent, Ashland.
And now they're getting to play teams more around their level.
Looks like they're going to send Ruddy in motion on the left side, takes a snap, hands it up the middle,
number 30 is going to break away a little power powered up to the 15 yard line.
That's a nine-yard run.
And it looks like Hillsdale is going to take out.
It's two-minute timeout.
Two-minute time-out.
So that means that we'll also take a time-out.
Score is 21-10, but Hillsdale driving, this is Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
The Medal of Honor.
This is Minute of Honor.
Here's Jinnah Suhita.
On March 28, 1966, Petty Officer Robert Ingram was serving as a hospital corpsman for Sea Company,
otherwise known as Suicide Charlie of the 7th Marines in Kwangnai Province of Vietnam.
Their officers thought they could drive out NVA elements in the area, but they were wrong.
Sea Company walked right into a three-point ambush.
In seconds, the platoon ranks were decimated.
As Ingram rushed to attend a down Marine, a bullet went right through the palm of his hand.
Wounded Marines were crying out across the ridge,
and Ingram, bleeding heavily, did his best to help them.
As he attended to one Marine, he received a line.
life-threatening bullet wound to the head, but he continued to push on, said Ingram, I was angry,
but all I wanted was to get out there and take care of my men because I was going to die anyway.
Though severely wounded, Ingram rendered aid to those incapable for hours.
For his fighting spirit, daring initiative, and unfaltering dedication on March 28, 1966 in Vietnam,
petty officer Robert Ingram was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
As we come out of the two-minute warning, student section is feeling good about their 2110 lead
with the Chargers driving.
Looks like they're going to go out of pistol formation
with Shea Ruddy to the right.
Running back number 30,
Kyle Riffel to the left.
Late substitution by Walsh is,
it looks like a little confusion.
Okay, Hillsdale.
Hillsdale takes a timeout coming out of the two-minute warning,
which is not something that you necessarily want.
But let's do some updates right now
for scores around the G-MAC.
Yeah.
As we mentioned earlier, Ashland was up on Finley in the third quarter.
That's going to be a big conference matchup.
Winner of that looks to take the conference championship.
Meanwhile, Northwood has beaten Thomas Moore 20 to 3.
Hillsdale beat Northwood last week in Midland, Michigan.
And as of our last update, I believe that Notre Dame is tied with Stanford.
Oh, that would be a big upset.
I think Notre Dame was double-digit favors on that one.
Well, actually, just ahead of the halftime, Notre Dame is up 21 to 7.
21.7.
Looks like the Chargers are going to come out in that same pistol formation,
though they have two wide receivers to the left this time.
Shea Ruddy to the right.
Takes a snap, hand off right side, and he is met immediately.
Let's see if that's enough to move the chains.
It looks like it's going to be enough.
Second and one was the previous down, and that'll bring up first down for the Chargers.
chain gain, the chain game wasn't quite sure right there.
Please reset the game clock to one minute 54 seconds.
154 please.
And it looks like they adjust the game clock a little bit.
It's going to be first and not quite goal, first in 10 from the 14 yard line for Hillsdale.
As they tried to score another touchdown to go go up by three possessions going into the break.
They're going to go eye formation here.
Shea ready out to the right.
Let's see if they send them in motion.
And they do from right to left.
Shea Ruddy takes a snap.
And the running back is able to pick up about four yards there.
Offensive line opened up a solid hole.
And that'll bring up second and six.
Zach Tetler taking that ball and charges are trying to go quick.
Going to hurry up here.
Now in shotgun, two wide receivers left and right takes a snap.
And running back squeaks through the hole there and is able to almost pick up a first down.
If not, it's going to be about third.
and one. Yeah, for the Chargers. See if they go hurry up again here as we have a minute 05 and
ticking for Hillsdale in this first half. Third and one for the Chargers. You don't want to leave
too much time in case you don't get it here and maybe you have to settle for a field goal or if you
have to score. But it looks like they're going to go a little power eye formation, bring that full
back in. Very tight takes the snap. Hands it to number 21. Andy finds a little space out on
right side and that'll be enough to make it first aim goal with 38 seconds left the clock should
stop for that first down a little confusion whether or not he made it there and yeah the rough is
going to have to put a little more time back on the clock again looks like maybe 10 seconds
i know i believe it's actually uh still are they're going to down are they going to call him short on that
I thought he got there.
It is fourth and inches, and Hillsdale calls a timeout with 28 seconds left,
trying to stop that clock and figure out what they're going to do here.
Now, that miscommunication coming down to the two-minute warning looms a little large here.
Now they only have one timeout remaining, so even if they get this,
they'll have to go back to the line.
Probably if your coach here, you're calling three of the next three plays,
assuming that you get the first down.
And then you have to imagine that Walsh is just going to kneel the ball out if they do get the stop here with 28 seconds.
go down into the locker room.
All things consider if you go in only down by 11,
if their defense can get a stop,
I think that's a huge win for them.
Hillsdale has really outplayed them on both sides of the ball.
Yeah, outside of some big plays by the Walsh Cavaliers,
they just haven't been able to do anything on offense.
Power eye formation.
Let's see if they go QB sneak here,
and Colin McCurnan takes the snap,
hands it back to the tailback,
who is met directly in the hole.
That's going to be very, very close.
Let's see if the refs say he got there.
Walsh definitely doesn't think he got there.
And the clock will stop running as they're deciding what to do here with the measurement.
They're going to take an official's timeout for the measurement, get that chain gang out there.
Depends on the spot.
It's hard to see it's on the far side of the field towards the south end zone.
So we don't have a good view from the broadcast booth here.
But yeah, definitely interesting.
This really changes the complexion of the game as Hillsdale, though, they'll get the ball coming out of the half.
If they are able to put a big drive together there, you know, that'll be super important.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, Hillsdale has just been marching the ball down the field,
and I think that the score is a little bit closer than what the game is actually reflected in terms of play on the field.
But we'll see here as they drag the chains out.
Oh, and they're calling it Walsh ball.
And the Hillsdale faithful are not very happy about that, but you got Walsh, who is a static going into the locker room, or will presumably be going into the locker room down by only 11.
So, yeah, Walsh's defense, that defensive line led by Cody Henry is able to get this stop.
I don't know who the first man to meet him in the hole.
I think that was a linebacker there.
And Walsh is going to, with only one time out for Hillsdale, they're able to take a knee here and go into halftime.
feeling pretty good about themselves.
Definitely close here because they're on the three-yard line,
but they're going to try to get that knee in
and hopefully get a better start to the second half.
As the student section lines up for those homecoming festivities for Hillsdale,
that's exactly what they do.
They do take a knee as Hillsdale's sidelines starts walking over towards the locker room.
Before we send them away for halftime,
let's look at just some final thoughts of what.
Oh, Hillsdale does take a timeout.
Okay, so they do hope that they're able to push Walshback,
maybe try to get a safety or something.
But that's interesting because you saw Hillsdale's sideline.
Most of those players thought it was halftime too.
Yeah, very interesting.
And that's something to consider here.
Ball is now on the two-yard line.
If they had that extra little bit of a timeout,
you know, maybe you could even push them back into the end zone
and force them to maybe do something differently.
But just another thing to consider.
sitter here as the teams both walk back out and are trying to get into half or maybe get a
couple of points on a careless knee. Yeah, I think T.C. Molk is maybe a little too professional
to be doing that, has a lot of experience in football. Actually, I wanted to bring this up,
and this seems like a good time. He was actually one of six finalists for Mr. Basketball
in the state of Ohio, which is a prestigious award, won by none other than LeBron James.
So a little tidbit there.
We'll see if he's able to sneak that knee in inside the one-yard line.
It doesn't look like Hillsdale's really loading up the D line too significantly either to try to get a push.
And, yeah, they're going to call that in-bounce outside of the end zone.
Hillsdale can't stop it again.
And they'll go into halftime as we have 21 Hillsdale, 10 Walsh.
Before we send it away to halftime,
halftime radio programming. Just some final thoughts of what you saw in the first half, Paul.
Yeah, I mean, outside of the big plays by the quarterback run and the big passing plays by the
Walsh Cavaliers, their offense has really just fallen apart on the other side of the field once they get
into Hillsdale territory. But Hillsdale, on the other hand, big plays and nice momentum on offense,
continuing to move the ball down the field, despite some struggles and some penalties on their
offensive line. Yeah, absolutely. And I think the players of the game that we,
noted that could make an impact really have that Hillsdale defensive line we were scared that it might
get gashed a little bit based on some of the history and Walsh's rush attack through the first four or
five games of this season we haven't seen that though as far and then the running back that you
pick he's played very well and you know really able to get the job done there so with that being
said I think we send this into halftime we take a few minutes away and thank you for
The score is 21 Hillsdale, 10 Walsh, as we continue our broadcast on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
We are back at Muddywater Stadium in beautiful Hillsdale, Michigan.
Temperature is about 65 degrees right now, as we've got about two minutes before Hillsdale receives the second half kickoff.
Paul, what did you see in the first half that impressed you?
Yeah, well, first of all, we got to talk about the time of possession.
Hillsdale just totally possessed the ball for a lot more than Walsh could have even imagined
18 minutes and 16 seconds for the Hillsdale Chargers to Walsh's 11 minutes and 44 seconds.
Pretty big discrepancy there.
And we just got to see the Hillsdale Chargers run the ball really, really well.
Total of 151 yards pat rushing on 255 attempts.
I mentioned his name earlier.
Logan Van Inkenford.
He had 50 yards total rushing with a touchdown.
And not to be done,
Zach Tetler had 65 yards with a touchdown.
Yeah, all around great performance.
We've talked about him so much.
We've said his name about a million times.
But Shea Ruddy, he only had five targets with three catches,
but he made them count with 107 yards.
Would have been closer to 150 if we didn't have that one called back.
He also had a touchdown.
on that. But the one saving grace for Walsh really has been Cam Holliba. The rest of their team has
13 tackles. He has 12 of them. A lot of them being able to get the Hillsdale running backs down in
open space as they've been able to gash through the lines. Yeah. And another thing to note is
quarterback Mulk for the Cavaliers. He had a nice 66-yard rushing touchdown, which has been the
only touchdown for the Walsh Cavaliers thus far into the game.
And they're hoping to turn things around offensively and as well as defensively and
bring this game back to a manageable distance.
But they will be kicking off to start off the half.
Yeah, and a little easier atmosphere here, as a lot of the students have left to participate
in the annual homecoming tradition, which is mock rock.
A big dance competition, 15 teams compete in Hillsdale's gym.
But that's not what we're talking about right now.
We're talking about Charger football, which has a chance to get the second win of the season
and the first home win for their new head coach, Nate Schreffler.
We've got the clock has struck zero.
Everyone's in formation.
The kicker places the ball on the tee, and we are almost underway in this second half for Hillsdale football.
Yeah, and I must say the Hillsdale offense has been quite impressive this game.
From last year, we've had quite the departure in terms of weapons.
they lost their leading rusher and Michael Herzog he is now on the CFL on a practice squad for the Montreal Alowitz as well as their leading receiver but that has really not slowed them down this game as they've just totally gashed the Walsh Cavaliers on on the defensive side well the kicker is ready and he'll take the three step and get the ball in the air second half is underway and kicks it out of balance so great starting field position for the chargers as we'll get that panel
penalty call.
Ball will be placed on the 35-yard line, first down.
So as you heard there, ball will be placed on the 35-yard line.
And really important to note here that the churches are trying to regain some of that momentum
that was maybe lost when they got stuffed in within two minutes of the first half,
had a chance to go up by 18, make it a three-possession game, instead 11.
So this drive is huge for them.
And the look to get it going here with the first play.
from the 35 yard line wide receiver out right another shay ruddy out left running back right behind
the quarterback she ready in motion takes a snap and it's going to be a handoff up the middle has a little
burst there for five yards where he's taken down by i think a pretty good bet is to guess that it was
cam holabaugh once he gets past that defensive line well nice misdirection there they had shay ruddy
moving in motion he was going around like an outside run so definitely
splitting the defense's attention there with that one and quite a successful run there for number 30
Kyle Riffle. Yeah and they're in a tighter formation here more obviously looking like a run unless they go play
action. Tailback catches a pitch and he burst through the right side gets past the first down and more
keeps those feet churning to they'll give him a generous spot at the 50 yard line.
So just like that in two plays the chargers are already knocking.
on the door of Walsh territory.
Yeah, another run by Logan Van Inkafort.
The Chargers just can't help but get big chunk yardage in these rushing plays.
And then you see how Walsh is loading the box now because they're expecting run.
That's when you can throw out Shea Ruddy and, you know, just throw the ball up.
He's down there somewhere.
They've got one safety.
It looks like they have nine in the box right now for Walsh.
And the pistol formation wide receiver left, hands it off the left side, has that
fullback blocking in front of Shay Ruddy.
And it gets around the corner for about a seven-yard scamper.
There is a flag.
The Hillsdale sideline does not look happy about that,
suggesting that it might be coming back here.
It looks like the Hillsdale offensive line is walking back.
So we'll see what this flag is.
And we can hear the player as it's miced up.
Don't know who that is on the offensive line.
Even if I did, I wouldn't call him.
out, but that's going to back up the charges.
And this really can't happen for the charges.
They need to stay ahead of the chains in rhythm so they can rely heavily on that run game
because ultimately they've looked good when they're a past first offense in the past few games.
But I really like the look when they're able to rush for 150 yards.
It gives them so much more options for explosive plays, which is the team's bread and butter.
Yeah, 150 yards in the half, no less.
And they've definitely looked very smooth at well-oiled machines.
out there on the offensive side of the ball.
But facing an uphill battle as it's going to be first and 20,
ball on the 40 moved on the other half of midfield in the Chargers territory.
Two wide receivers left, one right, sets the man in motion,
takes a snap, fake jet sweep,
power run on the right side, maybe gets a couple there
before he is swallowed up by that Walsh defensive line.
Yeah, quarterback keeps it there.
McCurton doing it himself, but I wish they would have just handed it off to the running back.
They've been pretty successful there,
and that one was only just one or two yards for Colin.
And I'd like to see those running backs getting in on that action.
They've got three really good ones.
And they're rolling today.
Yeah, and that's going to bring up second in 17.
It's going to allow Walsh's defense to spread out a little more,
keep the linebackers a little farther back than they have been.
In the past, we got two wide receivers out on the left as we face the north end zone,
takes the snap, three-step drop, has time, looks,
and DB falls down, first down if it counts.
Nope.
And they said the wide receiver dropped it.
That wide receiver was Tut, Carrico.
Ball bounces right before it bounces into his arms.
And it is an incomplete pass.
It is now third down.
Well, you got to believe that's a little bit of a missed opportunity right there.
Have a chance.
You're behind the chains.
Have a chance to get a first down.
Almost into field goal range.
And that's a pass that he's going to be thinking about all night.
So now third and 17, they're going to go a little more spread formation.
Keep one tight end in.
One right receiver out right, two to the left.
It's tight end in motion.
Takes the snap out of the shotgun formation.
And he's under duress and he's going to run with it.
Tuck it.
He has got a long way to go.
And, oh, gets fourth and eight is what it's going to bring up.
The Chargers thought there might have been a little bit of a late hit there.
But the laundry stays in.
So that'll be fourth and eight.
interesting decision but i got to believe the chargers want to pin him deep and that's exactly what
they'll do sending out the punt unit which we haven't had the chance to announce the punt unit for the
chargers until the third quarter ian woodyard who's averaging 39.6 yards a punt this season
if he gets it that far that'll pin walsh inside the 10 yard line see what he can do here yeah interesting
this is the first punt of the game for the chargers and the snap is good deep on low
drive and that'll bounce. Let's see if the unit can get there and he stays out of the end zone so
they'll down it at the three yard line. Fantastic special teams by the chargers. They actually are
placing the ball with the two yard line. And good semblance of mind for the charger's gunner there
not to run into the end zone. If he runs into the end zone there, it's a touchback. So yeah,
able to down that at the two yard line. Let's see if T.C. Molk and the first drive of the half has it in him to go
98 yards.
Yeah, definitely been tough for the Walsh offense.
Only one offensive touchdown, and that's come at the legs of hit their quarterback,
T.C. Mulk.
Let's see if he can air it out and hopefully get them rolling on offense.
And the Chargers have four down linemen facing against the six of Walsh.
It takes a snap, run up the middle, and really not much there.
Maybe a yard if we're being generous.
And that's how they'll spot at second and nine for Walsh.
You know, a three and out here in the Chargers probably get the ball closer.
than when they last punted due to that excellent special teams play.
I think in large part, Walsh wasn't really able to get a rush there.
Punter had more time, so even though it was a low drive kick,
gave the opportunity for his special teams man to get down there and down it.
Yeah, for sure.
Hillsdale's definitely outplayed Walsh on the special team side of the football.
Second and nine takes a snap, shotgun formation, fake handoff,
little read option squeaks through there.
The quarterback is past the 10 to the 15 to the 17, and now they're out of arms away.
With a little scamper there, it looked like initially there wasn't much on a read-option play,
but the quarterback able to sneak in there.
And that's got to make him close to 100 yards rushing due to that 66-yard earlier in the game.
Yeah, he's just shy there, but definitely closing in on that 100-yard rushing mark just for the quarterback alone.
Before any running back.
Shotgun formation, bunched wide receivers to the right of the offensive line, takes the snap,
run up the middle, and powers ahead.
That'll be a good run of 8-9.
nine yards for Walsh.
Yeah, running back
Jake Gill on the carry there
and
they've not really seen a lot of
success in the rushing game and
they're trying to get that going.
The best rusher on their team, as we've
mentioned, is their quarterback Mulk.
He's not even a running quarterback normally.
So he's going to take the snap out of the shotgun
formation, one wide receiver left,
two to the right, takes a snap,
gets it to the running back in the flat and he has a ways to
run. He'll get across the 40 there
for an easy first down.
13-14-yard pickup there for Walsh,
and they keep methodically going down the field,
starting this drive at their own two-yard line,
now at the 39-yard line.
And they'll go a little hurry-up.
They've got two wide receivers out to the left
as we faith that south end zone.
Running back directly behind the quarterback,
takes the snap, hand off left,
goes up the middle.
Oh, power safety misses a tackle there.
And number four for the Chargers.
Matt Soderdoll.
He's able to make the tackle there, but not after a 30-yard or more rush, bringing it down to the 28-yard line and plus territory for Walsh.
There's that big run that Walsh has been looking for this whole game, and they're now in Hillsdale Charger territory.
Great blocking there, and the Chargers just can't get past the blocks to take him down.
Yeah, it looks like the linebackers and safeties were a little out of position as he takes the snap and the spread offense.
Rush coming, and, oh, he's able to work his way out of a sack.
is going to tuck the ball. He's going to keep on going before getting taken down after a five-yard game.
Really should have been probably a sack five yards behind the line of scrimmage.
But T.C. Mulk really showing some nimbleness there. As they keep on going up out of that hurry-up offense,
two wide receivers right, one to the left, running back directly behind. They'll give it to him.
And he has swallowed up. Great play that quickly brings up third down.
Yeah, on that previous play, defensive end.
Christian Herrera, sorry, Christian Herrera was in the backfield and he hit the quarterback T.C. Mulk,
but Mulk able to stay on his feet and scamper for a couple yards on that one.
But now it's third down and scoreboard says four.
Looks like four or five to go.
And they've got their starting running back Cameron Macken directly behind the quarterback.
Slowing this down, this is a very important call as far as momentum goes in the game.
You've got two wide receivers on the left, one on the right.
Mulk takes the snap out of the shotgun.
It's a rollout to the left, and he throws it deep.
Oh, and it is almost picked by the Chargers.
Number six, Will Wims had it in his hands,
but unable to grab the ball and bring it down for an interception.
And let's also give Matt Soderdahl credit on that play.
It looked like he was in pretty good position there
forcing the wide receiver to the boundary.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, good defense all around by the Chargers.
didn't seem like he had much options
and he just threw the ball up there
hoping to get it to his wide receiver
for the touchdown.
Well, and the story of the game has been Trent Dewer-Fluer
who's going to be attempting
his third field goal. He's one for two
and this one comes from about 41
as the charger sideline
trying to get loud.
Snap hold, kick is up
and that is going to be good.
So the score is
Hillsdale 21
Walsh 13 as we continue on with our radio broadcast of Charger Football on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
To the grammar minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and let's settle this question once and for all.
What does it mean to say that something is inflammable?
Despite the misleading prefix, inflammable means the same thing as flammable.
That is it refers to something which is easily set on fire.
That prefix, by the way, comes from.
Latin and literally means in. Saying something is inflammable is essentially saying it is in flames.
A common misconception is that inflammable means both easily set on fire and not easily set on fire.
Fortunately, this is not the case and it only means easily set on fire.
The correct way to say that something is not easily set on fire is non-flammable.
Or to reduce confusion, you might say incombustible, which kind of makes things worse because it's the same prefix, but it means the opposite thing.
and that's English for you.
That's your Grammar Minute.

We're back at Muddywater Stadium
where Hillsdale looks to catch fire,
get a good offensive drive going here,
and punch it into the end zone.
2113, that's a one possession game
with the two-point conversion
in kick return formation for Hillsdale.
Walsh looking to kick it off here
and avoid a big return that we've seen.
One kick, two kicked out of bounce now.
and one big return on that reverse.
Yeah, Shea Reddy is definitely a threat back there in Hillsdale's deep territory
as he's already gotten one for 93 yards.
Well, and they kicked it directly to him at the five-yard line.
He fields it off the left side.
Shifts to the right side.
It looks like he has a hole opening and he'll break through.
There's a reason they kick it away from him.
He's going past the 40 to the 30 to the 20 to the 10.
No one's going to stop him.
Ruddy for the Tuddy.
And his teammates are going wild.
They're running out to celebrate with him.
And crowd is hyped up.
This is a great homecoming game.
As you get to see one of those big touchdown house calls for the return man.
Yeah, add 95 yards to his all purpose.
That's going to put him over, I believe that's going to put him over 200 for the day.
Just another incredible showing by Shea Ruddy.
And we'll see if Evan Mick can make this.
this a 28 to 13 game in favor of Hillsdale.
They needed a big play and they got it.
The kick is up and it is good.
Gets the job done.
Hillsdale 28, Walsh 13, as we continue on with the broadcast of Hillsdale football
on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Now, Paul, what do you expect to see Walsh coming back after such an explosive play?
Yeah, that was quite the response from the Hillsdale Chargers there with a nice kick return touchdown to respond to that field goal.
Man, the Walsh Cavaliers really just have to score a touchdown.
They can't keep settling with field goals.
They've got to really come down, march down the field, and put the ball in the end zone.
If they don't, then I foresee this game being over very shortly in terms of the score.
Well, don't do the old announcers, jinks, but I'm there with you.
I think the big thing is they have to stick with what works.
They can't get desperate.
Hillsdale's secondary has been relatively good this season.
So just making sure that you're still attacking the run game
with the opportunities present itself.
But yeah, not desperation time.
We've got eight minutes, 13 seconds left in that third quarter.
But if you're Walsh, you really need to score here down by 15.
Yeah, it is only a two-score game, but, you know,
it is time to get going on offense for the Cavaliers.
And Mick's kick is up.
It's going to be returned by number four of Walsh,
running along the right side. They've got a good push on the kick return defense, and he'll be
tackled down short of the 20-yard line.
So Hillsdale's defense, it's only given up 13 points. They've actually played pretty well this year.
They only gave up 13 to Northwood, 28 to a very good Finley team, and 24 to Ashland, 21 to Michigan Tech.
First game was tough against Indy with 42, looking to hold Walsh, which has had it, as we said earlier, a very explosive odds.
offense averaging almost 400 yards a game and we'll see Tise Molt take the snap out of the
shotgun two wide receivers right one to the left takes a snap free step drop and linebacker almost gets it
but it's caught for the first down off the right side just outside the hash yeah linebacker
kaden Evans almost tipping that ball jumping up but just short and instead it is a completion
for a first down for the walsh cavaliers now let's see if walsh continues with that hurry up offense
that served them pretty well in the last drive.
It looks like they made one substitution there.
But they got one wide receiver split out left,
one out right on the short side of the field.
And looking over the sideline,
let's see if they call an audible here.
Does not look like they're going to change the play.
Running back to the right, takes a snap,
three-step drop, airs it out deep.
He's got a man who's able to come up
and make the catch in Hillsdale territory
at the 43-yard line of Hillsdale.
that's going to be number 16
William Butler
a tight end he only has three receptions on the year
but a big one there to get Walsh going
they'll go no huddle
two wide receivers left one out right takes a snap
quick swing pass to the running back
who is able to trample down for
four yards
looks like the chain game didn't even have time
to set up there with how fast
Walsh was moving as we get below
seven minutes in this game
in the third quarter of this game
rather. This was a good play by Walsh. Nice pass play right into his receiver's hands and number two
Nolan's Drake was on the coverage there for the Hillsdale Chargers. Now second and six handoff
right side looking for space but he is taken down almost immediately by Hillsdale. That's going to be number 25
Vance Francisco. We've called his name a lot he had the pick in the first half and just an excellent player. He
plays what they like to call the Star Rule which is a hybrid linebacker.
safety DV role.
You never really know where he's going to be on the field.
And it's going to get loud in here for that third and four,
for Hillsdale, fall on the 33 yard line.
See what they do here with two wide receivers,
split out left, one out right, running back to the right.
Looks like a quick slam play that's tipped and almost picked off.
Number 41, Jacob Vance,
do for the interception that looked like it was tipped at the line of scrimmage.
But Walsh avoids it.
here and looks like they're going to keep their offensive unit out here for fourth and four.
Yeah, they blitz there on that play.
I think Vance Francisco took it in and was trying to get that blitz.
And pressured the QB, forcing him to throw that ball early and getting tipped.
Very good defense by the Chargers and now they're going for it.
And they have two wide receivers out left, one out right.
They got the tight end in against the line.
Wide receiver out left.
Defensive line, Hunter Spurling, picked up his hand, looks eager to.
get to the quarterback here we'll have to watch for that takes the snap out of the shotgun three-step
drop now going to the left defense almost there gets the crossing route across the 25 to the 22 yard
line that's going to be enough for a first down about a 10-yard game there on fourth down yeah as we
mentioned walsh definitely needs to pick up the pace and try to get a touchdown here and they go for it
on fourth and four and they ultimately convert so definitely taking that sense of urgency to heart
and trying to push the ball down and get that touchdown.
And they go, no huddle again, takes a snap, hands it off to the running back,
number six who powers up in there.
That's going to be another five yards for Walsh.
Keep moving down the field.
They're already inside the red zone at the 16-yard line.
Yeah, definitely.
They're going to get this touchdown if they really want to,
but the Charger defense really wants to keep them from doing it.
And so far, the Charger defense has been excellent at so.
Their will has been winning out in the rest of the red.
Red zone. Shotgun formation, two wide receivers,
takes a snap. Read option, and he has a wide
open hole. He's going to score there, but
wait, there's a flag on the play.
Yeah, sideline looks pretty happy for the Hillsdale
Chargers. They're clapping it up, and they're pretty happy, so it seems like
this play might be coming back for the Walsh Cavaliers.
And they start walking back for the penalty.
Holding, offense, number 16,
10-hour penalty, second down.
And that's going to bring up second down,
a huge shift in momentum there.
And you talked about how
Walsh could score if they needed to. I do
want to say, though, that the defensive coordinator for Hillsdale, Steve Otterbin, he has a very
bend but not break defensive mentality. The third down conversion percentage against him is 37% and on
fourth down 20%. So he's really been able to, he gives up a lot of yards. That's what the defense
has done this year. But when it comes down to it, they've been pretty solid when they've needed to be
solid as Mulk is going to set up shotgun formation, three wide receivers right, one to the left, three step
drop under duress and who's going to get there but hunter smirreling they call him the body hunter
because he gets to the quarterback what a great play star player of the game who i thought can make a
big difference and that's going to bring up third and from a different county for hillsdale
or not for hillsdale for walsh oh what's that going to be third and 20 something yeah the chargers
definitely brought the pressure on defense and they're trying to force the walsh cavaliers back
out of that red zone, which they were successful in.
And it looks like they're going to try to stop them here on third down.
Yes, they're going to spread it out.
Two wide receivers, right, one to the left.
Pressure gets there again, and he's not able to get out of it.
Is that no way that is 63.
That's not spurling again, but rather Drake Badger.
Team leader in Sacks, who else?
As we've got a charger who is slow to get off up off the field, Christian Herrera,
but it looks like he's going to be okay.
That's going to bring down, fourth down and 28,
and you have to bring the punt unit out now.
There's only 19 minutes left in this game,
four minutes left in the third quarter.
Yeah, Drake Badger, nice little leg tackle there,
grabs him at his feet and gets him to the ground.
His pads are a little bit uncovered by his jersey
because he's been really pushing through that defense
and getting pulled on as he goes through.
And let's see if Hillsdale can keep their special teams
amazing play up so far.
Shea Rottie chooses wisely to fair catch that low punt.
Now, Hillsdale's offense is going to take over here
with a chance to make it a three-possession game.
And I don't know about you, Paul,
but three possessions,
you have to imagine the drive is going to take them
to the end of the third quarter.
That's pretty hard to come back from.
So this is a huge drive for that Colin McCurman-led offense.
Yeah, I mean, the way the charges of running the ball,
they are just draining the clock out.
And if they keep that up and they just stay,
with what has been working. If it's not broken, don't fix it. And hopefully they keep that up and just
make sure that the Walsh Cavaliers get very little opportunities to catch up.
Takes a snap out of the shotgun formation, hands it to the running back directly behind him.
It powers up along the left side. That's going to be, oh, maybe that's going to be a tackle for a loss,
actually, for Walsh, getting Hillsdale behind the chains. I was going to say that offensive coordinator
Brad Otterban, I think, has done a pretty good job this game mixing in,
not being afraid to go to the run,
which the past game has been their bread and butter all season,
but really seeing the opportunities present themselves and running the ball.
But now they have a second and 10, two wide receivers out right as we face.
What end zone are we facing?
We're facing the north end zone.
Two wide receivers right, one to the left,
and it's going to be a full start.
Looks like they're going to get that left tackle.
And.
False start.
Offense.
Number 77.
I believe that's Ryan.
Strasser, who is coming back from injury, injured himself during that Michigan Tech game.
Can't be happy with himself there.
Going to bring up second and 15 for the Chargers.
Yeah.
Now backed up at their own 10-yard line.
As we mentioned earlier, man, the penalties for the Chargers O line has just been the number
one thing that they need to work on.
But in terms of everything else, they've just been excellent.
Creating holes, giving Colin McCurnin time to throw the football down the field.
and that's why they're winning the football game.
We got two wide receivers split out left,
running back to the left of Colin McCurn and takes the snap out of shotgun.
Little wide receiver screen is going to get not much there when he breaks out of it,
and he's across the 25, but there is a flag on the play.
We'll see what that is if that comes up.
It didn't look like there was a lot there,
but wide receiver, number 17, Jonathan Metzger.
It's actually number 18, Tut, I believe.
number 18 and 17 18 very close numbering scheme for hillsdale's offense but there is no foul so that's a huge play on second and long the officials thought they saw a block in the back there but it turns out they didn't in fact see it and it looks like the hillsdale chargers will get the first down there and that clock keeps running at 228 now down to 225 as he made it across the 25 yard line
So first in 10 chargers.
Shea Ruddy split out right side.
Wide receiver out to the left.
Send Ruddy in motion takes the snap.
And no jet sweep, fake jet sweep, looking deep.
None of his options are open, so he'll just choose to throw that away.
Looks like there's a wide receiver in the area, so no intentional grounding there.
Good job by Walsh's defense.
The pocket for Hillsdale was pretty strong, gave him enough time.
But the secondary there took down the deep read,
at the swing pass for Ruddy, and that brings down second and 10.
Yeah, he tried to throw the ball in the direction of Connor Pratt,
but ended up throwing it out of bounds.
He had the linebacker number 46, I believe,
bearing down on him from the Walsh Cavaliers,
and smartly gets rid of the ball.
Shotgun formation, three wide receiver set takes the snap,
a little pitch out to the running back off the left side,
but that play was pretty broken from the beginning.
It's going to bring up third and ten,
Not much there along as he tries to scamper around the left side.
Yeah, Logan Van Egford, the running back on that one.
And he's got not much to work with and is brought down at the line of scrimmage.
So this is a huge play for the Chargers.
If they're able to convert here, that'll take us basically at least this drive into the fourth quarter.
If not, Walsh gets the ball back, still in the third quarter.
Maybe he has a chance to get a quick score as we approach into the fourth quarter.
And then that makes it a totally different ball game.
But for now, focusing on this play, in shotgun formation, tight end goes in motion, two wide receivers out right, one to the left takes the snap.
Clean pocket delivers a strike and a flag.
Defender got there early.
That was number nine, the star Cam Hollabaw.
And the target on the pass was, I believe, number 85.
Andrew Kogniz.
Defense number nine, ball be placed in the spell of foul.
Yeah, that's going to be an automatic first down there.
Really not needed.
I don't know if you would have even guaranteed got the first down on that catch.
You would have had to run a little bit with it.
So a huge change in momentum.
I'm not going to play refram up here.
I think that was pretty clear pass interference, though, got there early.
Yeah, definitely a tight window that Colin McCurnan tried to put that ball into
and ends up being a penalty and pays off for the chargers.
It was a very good ball, though, for that short crossing route.
As we approach one minute, we're at 117 with a penalty stopping the clock.
And they're going to put two wide receivers out on the right side.
It looks like a little confusion.
And so offensive coordinator, Brad Otterbine, wants to talk to his guys.
So Nate Schreffler will take the time out there.
Now, Paul, who do you expect to step up in the fourth quarter?
for the Chargers.
Is it going to be their defense that needs to step up,
or do you think they can put the game away here with a big offensive drive?
Well, obviously the defense is going to have to hold the Cavaliers to minimal points
if they want to keep the lead.
But I foresee that the Chargers running game is going to be crucial here as, you know,
one quarter left in the fourth quarter.
And if they keep running the ball the way they've been running at the entire game,
then they should definitely be in control of this game.
And those running backs definitely need to gain your.
Nardage and keep the drive going in order to run the clock.
Yeah. Interestingly enough, Hillsdale is already.
They're averaging 15.6 points per game.
They're already at 28.
Like I said, they've had some pretty stiff competition going forward.
But I think if they get the wind here, your offense walks away from this with a lot to
build on.
As they split out three wide receivers to write as we're still facing that south end zone.
And Ruddy comes in motion, takes a snap, fake jet sweep, looking deep, but he'll break
the pocket, scramble across the 40
to the 45 where he
scamper's out of bounds.
For the Chargers.
Great play there.
Didn't look like there was a lot, but able to
pick it up for a very manageable second down
as the third quarter goes under
a minute remaining.
Yeah, and it looks like the clock
is still running after that.
Interesting there.
I think college rules is five minutes
in the fourth quarter if you go out of balance it doesn't run after that so makes sense why the clock
operator is doing that church is going pistol formation something we've seen a few times today two wide receivers
out on the right side tight end captain maybe to chip takes the snap hands it to shay ruddy has a lot of
room on the right side and he is able to keep going breaks the tackle across the 35 to the 30 to the 29
yard line very great run by shay ruddy looks like he was going to be taken down a few times
there and that might take us into the fourth quarter we shall see but the clock has stopped right now
for the chains to move but they might just let the clock run it run its course and take it into the fourth
quarter and try to give the walsh cavaliers less opportunity come back but they are in walsh territory
and it looks very promising for the charters offense that looks like what they'll do i mean when you have
to defend the run against three fronts the the side to side and north south and the quarterback run
It's going to be tough.
As the third quarter comes to an end, Hillsdale 28, Walsh 13.

And we're back and Hillsdale is threatening right now at the 28-yard line in plus territory.
Free rusher came off the right side, but he breaks, contain, scampers through the front of the pocket,
and he'll pick up five yards there.
Looks like the offensive line left a corner or a linebacker unlocked on the left side of the field,
but great pocket awareness by Colin, able to step up and turn a negative play into a positive one.
Yeah, and Shea Ruddy's been killing at this game.
We've got an update on how many yards this guy's got.
He's got over 200 yards of all purpose.
So my math was right.
Over 200 yards.
Still only 14 minutes left to go.
See if he can add on to that.
Tight ends in motion, a little tight bunch formation with two wide receivers on the right,
one on the left.
Takes a snap running back on the right side.
Great block by the offensive linemen to get close to a first down.
Looks like Hillsdale maybe wanted a little bit of a late hit right there,
but they're not going to get that.
And, yeah, I mean, that offensive lineman,
I'm thinking it's the guard that was pulling across,
really just crumpled the Walsh defender there.
Yeah, that is the first down for the Walsh.
For Hillsdale, rather.
Yeah, for Hillsdale, my bad.
And looks like they're moving the chains and in the red zone now.
As they go, I-Formation, something they haven't done a lot of,
looks like they have an extra tight.
end in there. Two wide receivers
bunched on the left side, close to the line, takes
his nap, pitch out right side. And he is met
immediately by
looks like a corner
or safety rather, Warren Bloodworth.
What a football name there.
Steps up and gets the tackle for Walsh,
making it second and 10 for
Hillsdale. Yeah, and we do have a score
update from the G-MAC. Ashland did prevail over
the Finley Oilers. Number
20, Finley. Yeah, 41-211
Ashland wins, and that game is
now over. And Hillsdale, if you remember, really had a close chance to beat Ashland. So I think that
kind of proves. And Finley. And Finley. I mean, they belong with the best if they can pull out
these close games. Shotgun formation, two wide receivers left, one on the right. Play action pass.
Looks for his tight end. And, oh. Just to his tight ends left. Just out of reach. Had to flip the
shoulders right at the end, the tight end did. I think some right over his left shoulder.
And that's a touchdown. He's dancing in the end zone. And that'll be a third and
10 well within field goal range field goal range still makes it a three possession game being 28 13
Hillsdale on top of finley with 13 minutes left or not finley uh finley did lose today um but on on top of
walsh with 13 minutes left in the third quarter and shotgun formation running back to the right
two wide receivers out left one out right in the spread offense and they'll give it to that
running back who's met immediately he's running backwards but he flips field across the right
side and he does a spin move to get back one yard short of the line of scrimmage he must have run 40
not 40 maybe 30 yards on that play um getting himself into trouble getting himself out of trouble and
pretty impressive run honestly yeah for for for a negative yard play it was very impressive about
as good as you're going to see dodging defenders out there bouncing off tackles and but ultimately
the rest of the walsh defense is able to catch up to him and bring him
down short.
So fourth and 12, they have their offense still on the field.
Trips left right against the offensive line.
Weird because a field goal makes it three possessions.
Let's see if they snap this.
They do out of shotgun dropping back, takes a shot for the end zone.
And that ball is tipped.
Hillsdale is going to want a flag there, but they don't get it.
And they turn it over on downs, giving the ball back to Walsh.
It's a 15-point game with 12 minutes left, and that's probably a best-case scenario for Walsh in that situation.
Oh, for sure.
I mean, that was number eight, Joe Schmidt on the target out there in the back left corner of the end zone.
And ultimately the ball is deflected by the two Walsh defenders in coverage.
And I believe Hillsdale doesn't really have much faith in their kicking game as Evan Mick just took over kicking extra points.
But the previous kicker was, I believe, his name.
We'll see.
I mean, you don't really know.
It could be strategic.
You get the first down there.
you get a touchdown you kind of put this game away but still interesting decision by hillsdale's
coaching staff still up by 15 fake jet sweep in the spread offense for walsh and the quarterback
was under duress from the snap able to get back to the line of scrimmage for walsh 12 minutes
left in this fourth quarter as hillsdale tries to win their homecoming game tries to get their new
head coach their first home victory of not only the season but his coaching career now in shotgun
formation. T.C. Molk, two wide receivers out right, one out left. Fake handoff, quick slant route,
and he is, gets the first down, but at what cost? Lit up by number 27 of Hillsdale's defense. That's
going to be Cost Davis. And wow, what a hit. Yeah, big hit. Tough pass up the middle. And, you know,
whenever you go up the middle, there's always going to be some fire coming down on you. Those
defenders are ready to get anyone who comes across their middle. And making them pay as they
go a little hurry up here. Shotgun formation, one left, two wide receivers to the right.
A little play action again and gets it out to the wide receiver running a little bit of a
curl. That's going to be a six-yard pickup. Number three, Anthony Harris for the catch for the
Walsh Cavaliers. And Anthony Harris, along with Trey Martin, have given this Walsh offense a little bit of
pop today. But let's see if, I'd be interested to see if Hillsdale tries to dial up something
here. Maybe not on the second and short, second and two at the 40.
yard line but to get Walsh behind the chains in the future it takes a snap fake jet sweep runs up the
middle and he has met immediately looks like in the A gap by number six of the chargers will whims
we've already been calling his name quite a bit today that's going to bring up third and one
huge call for Walsh though they will probably go for it on fourth down even if they don't get it here
yeah I would expect them to go for it I think you're in four down territory at this point in the
game you're down at least two scores if you go for a two-point conversion and they really need
this to go for them well they are bunched up tight at the 40-yard line of hillsdale have an extra
tight end in there takes the snap and they're going to hand it off to the running back um it looks
pretty close hillsdale does not think he got there doesn't seem that walsh has that much confidence
they got there either so that's going to bring down a huge fourth down call for walsh's offensive
coordinator who we haven't talked about much um but at one point actually jim purdle his first season is
walsh's offensive coordinator he has averaged 36 points per game most of that coming when he was a head
coach for st norbert he was at one point a top 50 winning his coach in ncdala but we definitely
haven't seen that today haven't seen his 36 points per game as it's fourth down they've only scored 13
points are they going to go out of shotgun here with uh running back directly behind two wide receivers
out right one out left and there's going to be a timeout let's see who that's taken by uh walsh takes
the time out on there so it looks like the head coach or maybe myrtle wants to or perdle rather wants to talk
with his boys about the play call but yeah under his leadership st norbert was a d3 school in green bay
they win 130 and 30 so a very good win percentage he already had walsh averaging 38 points per game this
year. One thing that they had struggled in was red zone touchdown percentage, but averaging close to
400 yards a game, they've gotten quite a few yards against Hillsdale, but really just not able to
put them over the edge, not able to get the scores when they need to. And when you're settling for
field goals, though their kicker has been good, have to shout out him, you're not going to win many
games, especially against a team when Shea Ruddy has two house calls. Well, credit this Hillsdale
defense, man. They've been tough all around. I mean,
There's been a couple of big plays for the Walsh offense,
but Hillsdale's been able to recover and really just lock down
and make sure that they let them go no further.
Yeah, especially on a second and two.
You kind of expect them to move the chance, keep moving forward,
and now we're fourth and one.
Looks like they're going to keep.
Hillsdale has four down defensive players
and going to keep four in the box.
It's going to be a rollout pass,
and he overthrows him.
He had the wide receiver number 12,
Garrett Wade, on the out route.
It looks like maybe that slipped out of his hands, though.
The rain has stopped about an hour and a half ago.
So, yeah, just a tough play there.
Good play call by the coach.
But that's what you get when you pass on fourth down.
Even if the player's open, you still have to play ball and catch.
Yeah, way over his head, not even close within fingertip reach.
And the Hillsdale offense gets to go back out there
and, you know, probably put the nail in the coffin if they can score this touchdown here.
Again, Paul, I don't like when you're talking about maybe jinxing things here,
but it does look like they have a little more of a power set in here,
give them more opportunities.
They do have two wide receivers out left, one out right.
They just don't have shade in the game at this point.
Wide receiver out to the left is Kyle Rifle, who has had a great game.
Shotgun formation takes the snap, and it'll be a quick throw, a little screen pass.
There is a flag, maybe that's off sides.
A lot of flags coming in.
Two flags on this play, for sure.
And that was wide receiver number 18, Tutt Carrico on the catch.
And we'll see if he gets any yards on this due to the penalties.
Well, as it stands, it's going to be a first down,
but Hillsdale doesn't look too confident that that's going to go their way as they're backing up.
Started this drive on the 41 yard line in plus territory.
But we'll see if they get backed up here.
We'll see the call.
Our two fouls limit put one on each team.
Legal formation, offense, five men in the backfield, personal foul, face mask, defense number two.
The only is offset.
Pre-play first-out.
So tough for Hillsdale, that face mask would have been a 15-yard penalty.
Instead, the offsetting, a legal formation penalty,
is going to just redo first and 10 with nine minutes left in this fourth quarter.
She comes back into the game.
Colin McCurnan, hoping to rally the troops to get into the end zone one more time,
at least in this game, to really make the homecoming crowd feel confident that they have this.
Out of the shotgun formation,
going to keep a tight end on the right side, two tight ends right?
rather, two wide receivers split out to the left, sends Ruddy in motion, takes the snap,
fake handoff, tries to go up the middle, but what a tackle.
That's going to be number zero, Chris Jones, who has made an impact tonight with his hard hitting.
Yeah, that was definitely a read option, and looks like he did not read that correctly,
and just kept the ball himself only to get tackled up by the defender by Walsh.
I mean, he was coming from the same direction that Ruddy was running, so maybe that was a lose-lose.
Yeah.
But definitely not a great play for the Chargers as they look to bounce back on this second down.
Well, all I can say is Shea is probably happy he didn't get lit up there and it was the quarterback instead.
Second and 13 as that one lost yards for the Chargers.
Two wide receivers split out left, running back off the left side.
Shotkin formation takes the snap.
Fake handoff off the middle.
They'll go back to that screen pass they did on first down.
And at the 40-yard line, he gets tackled down.
There's more laundry on the field.
Another flag.
Quite a few flags have been thrown in this game at halftime.
I know we were at about 50 yards apiece,
which is near the team's average for entire games this season.
But let's see, are they going to call that in illegal formation again?
Because that was the penalty they threw on the previous quick swing pass out to the left side,
or screen pass rather.
Yeah, very interesting there that we have two flags and we'll see what they are.
Holding offense number 39, 10 here from a previous spot,
replay second down.
So it is not an illegal formation, which is little consolation because instead of five yards,
it's going to be 10 yards.
And that's going to bring up second and 23 for the Chargers getting moved back into Walsh territory.
Well, by the end of the third quarter, both teams had 65 yards and penalties, as George mentioned.
So definitely not the cleanest game for either team.
And I'm sure they're going to be watching a lot of film this week.
You're going to have coaches in their ear talking about playing a cleaner game.
because a lot of the penalties were big, including a momentum shifting opening kickoff,
large return by Walsh.
Now Hillsdale in the shotgun formation running back left, two wide receivers out left, one out right
as they face that south end zone.
Takes the snap, looks down the middle, can't find anyone.
Oh, almost a strip sack, but our quarterback, Colin McCurnan, able to keep it,
keep the ball possessed there.
And maybe another holding there, doesn't matter.
It's going to be third and forever for the Chargers.
Yep.
And so the first down is at the 30 yard line of Walsh.
The ball is spotted.
How many yards away?
I got a, that's like 20, 30 yards away?
28.
3rd and 28.
Not a math major, so I apologize to the listening audience.
But, yeah, 3rd and 28.
See if they'll play this conservatively right here.
Time is on their side with 7 minutes and 43 seconds remaining as that clock continues to run.
ball on the 41 yard line.
Chris Jones for Walsh Cavaliers
on the sack, sticking his arm out
across Colin's arm as he was about
to throw, but he keeps a hold of the
ball and takes the sack instead.
Colin McCurnan's going to look to take
the snap with two wide receivers to the left,
or two to the right, one to the left takes a snap,
and it's just going to be a little handoff play
trying to gain a few of that back for pun formation,
but he makes the best of it, stays in-bounce
and gets to the 50-yard line,
so a solid nine-yard run there.
It's going to set up the punt unit
to maybe get Walsh pinned deep as we remember that they pinned them at the two-yard line last time.
It's going to bring up fourth and 18 for the Chargers.
Yeah, only their second punt of the game if they do punt this, and they will as the punt team heads out onto the field.
And that just shows you how successful this offense has been.
And now it's time for the defense to show their salt on the field and keep the Walsh team scoreless in this fourth quarter.
Yeah, we'll see if Walsh tries to bring more.
pressure here. I think that was a big reason it got down last time is because the punter had time.
So takes the snap coming off the edge, but he misses the block. And that ball is fielded at the 10
yard line. Jukes, and he might have the edge. He's going to go past the 20 to the 30. Block at the 40
turns up field, and he'll get there about to where the punt started at the 50 yard line. So good
return. Hillsdale's punt team, that was a low-driven punt. So that's really tough to get your
gunners down there in time.
And on that left side of the formation, they weren't able to,
looks like they over-pursued there allowing for that return.
Yeah, Ian Woodward, the punter, he seems to be like a very low-angle punter.
And as George mentioned, hard to get your guys downfield when that's the case.
But thankfully, the special teams of the Chargers prevents a touchdown right there.
Yeah.
Yeah, good for never giving up on the play.
As Walsh takes a snap out of the shotgun formation, fake handoff, quick, flat,
to their tight end coming out below their wide receiver.
And that's going to be a four-yard game,
bringing up second and six,
moving the ball ever so closer
into Hillsdale Charger territory at their 48-yard line.
Yeah, number 16, William Butler on the catch for the Walsh Cavaliers.
And shotgun formation takes a snap.
Two wide receivers left, one to the right,
heirs it out deep, and he has him if he can throw him in stride,
incomplete pass, but that's probably a touchdown right there.
It looks like number 43 on the Chargers defense was not able to got beat on that play.
It looks like a linebacker, and Chargers very fortunate there.
Now it's going to bring up third and six for Walsh.
There's been a couple of throws like that.
T.C. Mulk, obviously, having a perfect 16 for 16 last week.
He's been all but so far overthrowing a couple of his guys.
For Hillsdale, that's bailed them out a couple times.
Shotgun formation, two wide receivers left, one to the right, takes the snap.
Looks that same side, and he gets him this time on the out route.
Maybe a comeback route?
Very well-placed ball.
Did not miss that time, and that's going to bring it into plus territory at the 41-yard line.
Quick strike there, and Gavin Chenevi on the tackle there,
and, I mean, after that really bad pass overthrowing his wide receiver,
he hits him right in the chest right there and gets the first.
touchdown. Five minutes and 30 seconds left time is a factor here as we got two wide receivers
out right, one out to the left running back. Going to stay in and pass block and now go for a pass.
He's going deep for number three and he's got him for the touchdown.
Looks like a little vertical route. T.C. Molk puts the ball on his hands. That's going to be a
touchdown. Now interesting here to see if Walsh decides to go for two or try to kick that
PAT to not make it a two possession game earlier than they need to. But
Yeah, touchdown Walsh.
It looks like they've got their kicking team out on the field right now.
Yeah, you don't want to take yourself out of the game.
That's going to make it, right now it's 2819, looking to make it 2820, Trent Door Floor on the kick.
And very quickly, Walsh has come back here.
Yeah, and that was number three, Anthony Harris, on the touchdown reception.
And the kick is up, and it is good.
So Walsh inches closer, score Hillsdale 28.
Score Walsh, 2518

And we're back at Muddywater Stadium.
As a slight breeze comes in, those lights are really doing something now as we enter 621
PM, 518 left in the game, and Walsh with a great long route.
It looks like Hillsdale set up expecting an onside kick.
They've got 10 men up.
And yeah, that's what it's going to be.
Number 21 is going to field it cleanly, though, and just get down.
wisely as the Hillsdale return unit was not ready for a normal return.
So Hillsdale will take the field at the 25-yard line.
Five minutes, 14 seconds to go is all they need to run it down.
Up by 8 against Walsh, and they really need a couple big runs here to ice the game.
Yeah, rough drive last time out for the Hillsdale offense.
Lots of penalties pushed them back.
Ended up having a second and 28, and they look to be a little bit more smooth.
and cleaned up on this drive.
They have Zach Tetler out there who's been the go-to guy this game.
Two wide receivers out right, takes the snap, hands it off right side.
And he punches through the middle.
Oh, and he fumbles it.
And Walsh gets on top of it.
Walsh has the ball at the 33-yard line.
Their offense is going to go back on the field.
That is the one thing that Hillsdale could not afford to do there, coughing the ball up.
Yeah, linebacker number 51 Cameron Gill on the recovery for the Walsh defense.
and that was a tough break for the Hillsdale offense.
That is not what you needed right there.
Do we have any idea who punched that out?
I do not know, but it was very tight there.
Okay.
I mean, my guess is always going to be their lineback or Cam Hollabaugh,
but once we find out, we'll let you guys know.
33 yard line in plus territory, T.C. Mold.
All of a sudden finds himself down eight,
have a chance for a signature drive here with five minutes left.
one possession game as it starts to get darker here at muddy water stadium two wide receivers right one left
motion man number three takes a snap three step drop can't find someone immediately can't find running room
and he is almost sacked by number 91 christian herama herama of hillsdale's defensive line
and that's what they need to string together get the pass rush i think that was really if you would have
gotten there that would have been a coverage sack because
because he had enough time to look for his wide receivers down field.
Well, there was definitely a lot of pressure.
Molok was bouncing around that pocket because he was definitely feeling the heat
from the pass rush of the Hillsdale Chargers.
Now the Chargers sidelines starts to get loud.
Three wide receivers out right, one out left, sends 12 in motion,
fake jet sweep, and a little halfback screen,
and an open field tackle.
What a fantastic play.
That's number 25, let's give it to him.
Vance Francis gone.
We've been calling his name all day.
This guy's been bawling out, and he shows it here.
If that's not a third in 15, it's probably third and two.
Huge read by Vance there.
He breaks, sees that screen pass.
He sheds that blocker, that lead blocker.
Only one there, and he makes that tackle.
Make sure he does not break free for a touchdown and brings up third down.
And 15 for the Walsh offense.
And a field goal doesn't get you much here if you're Walsh,
so you're probably playing two downs.
Two wide receivers out left, one out right, tight end in, and it's a rollout left, looking deep.
He airs the ball out to number 19 who has separation, and that's going to be pass interference on number 11 for Hillsdale.
Yeah, very obvious pass interference there.
Number 11.
Gavin Chavani.
Yeah, he was way behind on the coverage, a step or two behind and trying to catch up and just ran right into his man, number 19, Tray Martin.
obvious easy call for the officials right there.
And it's hard to say there's ever a good pass interference,
but I think the fact that he got,
if he would have turned his head around,
he probably could have batted that down.
But when you get beat by a couple steps like that,
sometimes your only option is to take that 15-yard penalty
rather than see your guy dancing in the end zone.
Yeah, that was definitely going to be a touchdown
if receiver Trey Martin came down with that ball.
Well, now T. T.C. Mulk facing a new set of downs first in 10 here
at the 23-yard line in-plus territory.
Fake.
Oh, he pulls it on the reverse play, and look who that is, number 99.
Zach Tokey, who he said coming in was going to be a big player,
showing that nimbleness, putting on the seatbelt, showing that he can't get past him.
That's going to bring up second and 13 for Walsh's offense.
Yeah, huge play defensively for the Chargers, Zach Tokey,
be able to shed the blockers and read that QB keeper there, fake on the handoff,
and huge play for the Chargers.
The last time Hillsdale got behind the, or Walsh got behind the sticks,
Hillsdale couldn't convert and force a three.
Plunt takes a snap out of the shotgun formation.
He's looking across the middle and, oh, that number three, that's Harris.
He must have sticky glue on his hands because that was a tough catch in coverage,
but a perfect ball by T.C. Morg.
It's going to make it goal to go first and goal.
And, man, if the Chargers can get a stop here,
going to be a signature stop from their defense. They really could use this one.
Yeah, great pocket presence from quarterback Mulk of the Cavaliers. He steps up and nails his man on the crossing route.
Shotgun formation, wide receiver out left and right. Little read option, give it to the running back,
and he's got a ways to go touchdown Walsh.
Scamper around the right side and quarterback made the right read there. Ultimately, good blocker,
is able to pull ahead there. Looks like the offense is staying out on the field and they're going to go for two here and try to tie this game up.
why wouldn't you 28 26 down by 2 this might be the biggest play of hillsdale's season so far
for sure i mean look at looking at that previous play just perfect blocking by the walsh cavaliers
and wide open clear lane for the running back to just walk into that end zone well even if they do
tied up hillsdale will have three minutes left but hopefully it doesn't get to that point is what
hillsdale is hoping you've got two wide receivers that are going to be outright one left but he's
tight against the formation the right side is going to be that long side of the long side
It takes a snap, throws it, and he is wide open, well-designed play in the flat there.
Walks across the end zone line, 28, 28.
And just a few minutes ago, I didn't think that we were going to have this close of a game coming into this.
So we're going to stick with you, actually, down the stretch, not go to commercial here.
As we get ready for the chargers, they're going to have three minutes, six seconds, two timeouts,
see if they can go down the field.
If you're a coach here, as someone who's never coached football, Paul,
what are you telling your guys, how are you calling this last drive for Hillsdale?
Well, we just got to replicate the success that they had in the first half.
I mean, just running the ball, passing the ball, easy chunk plays down the field,
you know, taking your time, not too much time because you only have three minutes,
but you definitely have to just let that offense just do what it did in the first half.
But you still have Shay ready back there returning that kickoff.
And he's already gotten one, and maybe he can give the chargers a big boost.
to start off this drive.
Yeah, and it's a weird kickoff return formation for Hillsdale.
They've got five guys up close, a front,
and then really no one for 10 yards.
I don't know.
If I'm Walsh, I'm considering kicking it to the right side
and trying that onside kick again.
Yeah, I think it's definitely an anti-squib formation,
but we'll see.
Oh, it looks like they're going to switch it up
based on who their hands team is here for Hillsdale.
Very strategic kickoff and now looks like Walsh's kicker is going to switch it up.
So a little game of Cat and Mouse with 14 seconds on the play clock.
Walsh, let's see what they do here as they kick it off.
Is it a squib?
Is it a squib?
And they're going to squibb it down the field trying to avoid Shea Ruddy.
But somehow 17 comes up with it, gets it across the 30,
and that's where Hillsdale is going to set up shop.
Yeah, number 17, Jonathan Metzger on the,
return and the chargers will be just past the 30 yard line in their own territory with three minutes
exactly on the clock you could be anywhere in the world but it's a 28 28 game at muddy water
stadium there's no place i'd rather be as hillsdale's offense looking up to pick a signature
win in head coach's first season here trying to get his first home win it's going to be
tough down the stretch you've got overloading on the right side with three wide receivers none of
on the left, running back to the right side as well.
It takes the snap and they're going to hand it to him.
See if that offensive line can get a push.
And number 98 for Cody Henry,
who has played very well for Walsh,
is going to get the stop right there.
It's going to bring up second and 10 for the Chargers.
Yeah, no gain on that play.
Trying to get that running back loose on that left side,
but unfortunately the Walsh defender
is able to read that, shed the block and take down the running back.
Meet him at the line.
Hillsdale.
Going back to the line of scrimmage for second and ten here.
Two minutes, 25 seconds clock running.
Two wide receivers right takes the snap, hands it off again.
And he bursts up the middle.
Slams through that line of scrimmage and gets across the 40-yard line.
But wait, there's going to be a big third down call coming up here by the offensive coordinator,
Brad Otterbine.
Third and one.
You're about 30 yards away from field goal position, maybe 40,
based on the trust that you have in a kicker.
We're not really sure there.
And they're going to bring some extra linemen,
extra tonnage.
And the two-minute warning
is the two-minute warning.
We're going to quick go away for a little bit.
And 28-28, this is Hillsdale Charger Football
on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
And throughout the season,
the only is located at 256 Carleton Road
in its boat for the Plaza.
It is the perfect spot for your free game.
So I guess we're going to stay on for this two-minute warning break as we have this third-and-one call upcoming.
Paul, what are you looking to call if you're an offensive coordinator in this situation?
Well, we've got to just power through the run game has been the way to go with the offense.
And Logan and Eckford just got that big run to put it at third-in-one.
And I would stick with what's working.
Looks like they've got running back Kyle Riffel on the field ready.
to line up behind the quarterback and hopefully they can get that one yard and continue this drive to
win the game. Yeah, it looks like they're going to line up. I don't know if you'd call this a jumbo
set, but it's about the most weight we've seen Hillsdale bring out on the field at all this game.
You've got a fullback. You've got a power eye formation. Maybe they'll go with the sneak here.
Takes a snap and it is a QB sneak and he gets over the first down marker.
157 to go. They'll take time to move those chains or measure.
but that's going to bring up a new set of downs for the chargers depending on the spot it doesn't look like they need to measure yep they're going to bring bring the chain crew forward so first and 10 from the 42 yard line
eight yards away from midfield you got two wide receivers out left one out right look for shay ruddy here takes a snap looking off the right side has him on the out route and that's going to be another oh he almost fumbled the ball but he is able to hold on to
it. Wow, that was loud.
Yeah, ball popped out right there
and able to grab it
again as he spills out of bounds
and gives the Chargers a
nine-yard gain on that first down.
So I misspoke there. It's going to be second and one
here for the Chargers. Actually,
a little confusion. The chain gang, some are moving,
some aren't. They're saying move it on first
down. Looks deep for Shea
Ruddy and, oh, batting
down. Shea's looking
no, he's not looking for the
flag. That looks like pretty clean.
That's going to bring up second and 10.
A minute 37 left.
At this point, if you're Walsh, I think you're just, you're not really even thinking about
not overtime.
You're playing for overtime.
Hillsville has two timeouts.
Even if they get stopped here, the pun is going to pan Walsh deep.
Yeah, definitely some miscommunications on the officials part, and that was a first
in 10 on that previous play.
But good defense by the Walsh defender number four.
Running back to the left side, shotgun formation, two wide receivers out left, tight end on the
right side.
And they're going to run it off the right side.
punches through the line of scrimmage.
It's going to get to the 41-yard line in plus territory.
That's going to bring up a huge third and four for the Chargers.
Third and three is what they're going to call it.
And this is maybe, depending how confident you are,
maybe four-down territory, but with Walsh's kicker, probably not.
Two wide receivers out left, one to the right,
and takes a snap in the flat, has his man.
Number 23, that's going to be going right back.
to Connor Pratt. Great play call there. Nice little out route. Nice little hitch there too at the end.
He catches the ball, steps out of bounds, and stops that clock. So a minute eight remaining,
Hillsdale has two timeouts. Time isn't really the concern here. If they can get inside,
if they can get inside the 20, I got to believe you feel pretty good about your field goal chances
with Evan Mick. Both teams have two timeouts remaining in this game.
Two wide receivers out left, one to the right. That is Shay Ruddy to the right.
in motion from right to left.
But he goes back to the right, takes a snap.
And he's going to look deep for Ruddy.
He has the man.
He has him.
He gets him inside the five-yard line of Hillsdale.
What a huge play.
Massive catch by Shea Ruddy there, right over the middle, doing a nice little post route.
And Colin McCurton just gets him the ball right in his hands.
He had a defender beat by a step.
It was not even a contested pass.
And we're looking inside the five-yard line for the Hill-Dill Chargers.
And so here's the question poll.
If you're Walsh, you're probably trying to let the Chargers score.
Charger's probably going to try to run this down as it's P.A.T. distance now.
Trusting that Ivan Mick, who has been 4-for-4 on P.A.T.
is going to knock it through.
43 seconds left and a pitch back, and they're not going to let him score as he goes down to the right side of the field.
And gains maybe two yards on that.
So second and goal.
We'll see if Walsh takes the time out there.
Time out.
Hillsville.
Oh, Hillsville is going to take a time out.
I think if you're Hillsdale, you just try to get the touchdown.
You're at the three-yard line in.
Putting seven points on the board puts a lot of pressure on the Walsh Cavaliers's offense.
I don't know.
With how explosive Walsh has been all game,
especially in the last couple possessions where they've been able to air it out
and get past interference calls,
I don't know.
I think you're right in some ways that 7 is always going to be better than three,
but if you can ice the game with no time on the clock,
don't give T.C. Molle any more time than you.
You need to.
If they do explode and get a nice touchdown to tie the game,
it would only be a tie unless they go for two and try to take the lead and win the game.
So I think you'd feel very confident getting the seven points or the six from the touchdown
and hoping that you can hold them.
You have 30 seconds on the clock.
You're on the three-yard line.
Second down, you have multiple chances to run the football.
You have one time out.
Yeah, I think either way, though, the big thing is scoring here.
You can't turn it over.
We've already seen a critical fumble.
as Hillsdale is facing that south end zone facing towards the tennis courts.
One wide receiver, Shea Ruddy split out far left.
The rest is kind of in a jumbo set.
And a timeout Walsh, they're seeing the formation they're lining up in.
Going to give one timeout remaining to each of the team.
Yeah, definitely no risk timeout.
You want to prevent them from doing whatever they want to do against your defense.
And they're going to make sure that they got the right defense in the red zone
to prevent the charges from scoring.
I think Walsh right here definitely does not want the charges to score,
as evidenced by this timeout and that last play,
definitely trying to keep them tied,
if not make them to try a field goal and see if their kicker can pull it off.
Yeah, they also might be seen they might have a package that they like
for blocking a field goal that they've kept in their back pocket.
I know some special teams or defensive coordinators do that
where they have something for a big situation like this,
But yeah, the big thing is Hillsdale has to score with 32 seconds left.
You like their chances, no matter if you get a field goal or a touchdown.
Interesting, though, that Walsh only has one timeout left can only stop the clock one more time.
As Hillsdale is going to go in that same formation, don't change it out of the timeout.
Shea Ruddy far off the left side.
He goes in motion, and they're just going to hand the ball off again.
Fake Jet sweep.
And he gets in yard short of the end zone.
Yeah, it looks like the ref has called him yard shot.
short and 22 seconds clock is running. This is going to be a third in goal play. Let's see if they try to do a QB sneak here and then they take the time out if they don't get it. In the I formation, they're going to pitch it back, same play. And he's stuffed. So it's going to come down to an Evan Mick field goal here at Muddy Water Stadium. Homecoming night, coming down to a field goal or else we have overtime. It does not look like they've even got him.
Evan Mick is on the field.
Looks like he's putting his helmet on.
Like we said, he was perfect last week on PAT's.
It's been a solid kicker.
We do have an injured Walsh player on the field.
But let's just do a little game recap
as we have eight seconds left in this game.
How we got here.
It looked like Hillsdale was going to pull away.
2813 entering the fourth quarter.
And just, the T.C. Mulk, able to complete a deep pass.
It's actually an injured charger on the field.
Injured charger, that's going to be number 30.
They're running back from that play, Kyle Rifle.
So hopefully everything is okay.
He's able to walk off, albeit not putting any weight on that left leg.
So injuries, no one wants to see that here.
But that's a huge blow for the chargers.
But as this game's already coming to a close with the field goal kicking,
unit on the field. It won't have much impact on this game. But hopefully Evan Mick can nail this.
It looks like it's about PAT distance. Yep. So that's going to be a 20-yard field goal.
Sure he's made a lot of these, well, he's made a lot of these in-game, probably perfect in practice,
but this isn't practiced. This is the biggest kick in his college career. And of course,
Welsh is going to try to ice him, making the last eight seconds, last eight minutes. But
I mean, any way you slice this very impressive effort by Walsh to get back into this game,
could have easily gotten down and died in that fourth quarter,
but able to come back, able to take advantage of some Hillsdale miscues,
including that fumble when Hillsdale had a chance to ice the game on a drive.
Yeah, huge fumble there and huge capitalization by the Walsh offense,
but now Hillsdale looks to hopefully take the lead here with eight seconds left.
I mean, that was a first half showdown, I mean, first half domination by the Hillsdale Chargers,
just completely shutting down the Walsh offense outside of that big 60 or 66-yard run by quarterback Mulk for the Cavaliers.
But in the second half, it's pretty much been all Cavaliers outside of that Shea-Ruddy kickoff return for a touchdown.
Yeah.
And the passing plays have been just huge for the Cavaliers.
But the Chargers are looking to take the lead here.
when it matters.
And Evan Mick
lining up with eight seconds left
for the biggest field goal
of his college football career.
The snap, the kick,
the ball is up,
and it is no good.
Evan Mick hooked that left.
Snaphold would look good
from where I was at.
And, I mean, obviously,
very dejected,
walking back to the sideline.
This game's going to go into overtime.
Well, we've still got five seconds
on the clock,
Nothing is guaranteed, but it does look likely that overtime is coming up.
Yeah, and with the college overtime and with how fast-paced it is,
we're going to stay with you, probably not go to commercial the rest of the way,
as you continue to listen to Charger Football on Radio 3 Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
But Walsh, looking here, I'm guessing they'll just kneel it out and be content going into overtime.
But I think most of the fans in the stands are a little shocked right now.
If you would have told us 15 minutes ago in game time that Walsh has the chance to win this game in overtime.
Definitely disappointing, but if they get the job down, all will be well that ends well.
Well, four quarters wasn't enough to decide it, so we're going to go to the fifth overtime.
Now, Paul, do you want to explain a little bit of college overtime rules and how that works?
Because I know it's different from the NFL.
Yeah, so each team is going to get an opportunity with the ball from the 25 yards.
yard line and I mean it's not sudden death like the NFL so if the team who gets the ball first
scores the other team will have an opportunity to tie the game and push it into double over time
however if the first team fails to score it does become a sudden death for the team with the second
possession so yeah and it's also because normally you could say if walsh gets the balls first and
they don't score. You get the ball at the 25 yard line. Maybe you just kick a field goal pretty much
right there after a few running plays. But with the kicking game struggling a little for Hillsdale,
you probably are trying to punch it in for six here, no matter if you're going first or second in
overtime. Yeah, so we definitely see the answer to our question on why Hillsdale has gone
for it on fourth down despite being in the red zone or in plus territory. So after that Evan Mick field goal,
miss, you can see the Chargers thought process many times in their own territory, or in Walsh's
territory. And then as a reminder, if you get into double overtime, it's a two-point conversion
going forward into multiple overtime. So, yeah, very interesting, very interesting calculus there
for Hillsdale as, you know, both sides, talking with the coaches, trying to figure out
the strategy for this. But ultimately, the thing is just punt.
punching it in for Hillsdale the way their kicking game has struggled as only one captain from each
side will come out uh Logan van Engervort for Hillsdale and then for Walsh it's going to be
number 46 Rocco I Encino so the refs are going to describe the the rules for overtime yeah and I've
just been informed that in the third overtime period if it reaches that far it will be alternating
two point okay so it's the I was wrong it wasn't
second overtime, it's third overtime, that it starts those two-point conversions.
Well, the second does start mandatory two-point conversion.
After the score, though, but after that, it's just two-point conversions.
Yes.
So Walsh has won the toss.
They're going to play defense first, so Hilsdale, they really need Brad Otterbine.
Squad needs to score a touchdown here, I think, if they're going to have a good chance.
Like I said, I mean, the kicker for Walsh, notably one of their,
Better players, I would say, 25 of 26 on those PATs.
His long is 33 this year, but now it's going to be about 46.
4 because of this game, he hit a 46-yarder.
And he hit from 60 in practice.
So there's really no distance in overtime.
That's going to be a struggle for him.
But Hillsdale is going to go on offense here with some of the biggest drives of the season,
still seeking that first home win here.
Yeah, and as a reminder, we had a copy.
Riffle limping off the field on that last offensive play for the Hillsdale Chargers.
So he is no longer available for them in this overtime period.
Shea Ruddy in the backfield, they're going to hand it off to him going around the right side.
Give it to your best player.
And for a reason, he cuts up field, makes it past the 15 to the 13 yard line.
That's going to be a first down chargers.
15 yard line.
They're going to get the chains to move over.
Yeah, putting their most dynamic athlete with the ball in his hands, he sees that the outside
is clogged with Walsh defenders.
He cuts up inside and takes it for a first down.
Yeah, and even if you meet him in the hole with one player,
one player isn't going to get him down just with his craftiness.
Going to go a little eye formation here.
Two wide receivers split out left.
Takes a snap under center, pitches it out to the running back,
cuts up field, and he's going to get in for the touchdown.
A little double cut action.
Now, we'll see if Hillsdale's going to go for two here,
or if they're going to settle for that PAT.
It looks like they're going to go for two here.
No, they sent out Mick.
Yeah.
So Evan Mick with a chance to redeem himself.
34 Hillsdale, 28 Walsh.
Huge run there for Logan Van Inkvort.
He's just, that's his second touchdown on the game.
And as I said earlier, he's going to be our game-changing charger, man.
I called it.
And he's really stepped up big, especially with the injury to riffle.
And Hillsdale, the kick is up.
And that one is straight through the uprights.
A break kicked by Evan Mick.
Hillsdale's defense is one stop away from winning their homecoming game.
Here as it gets dark at Frank Muddywater Stadium, this game has already taken two hours, 47 minutes.
Hillsdale Chargers are hoping that it can be two hours, 49 minutes or somewhere close to that.
Getting that defensive stop.
Look for that defensive line to try to get pressure on the quarterback.
T.C. Mulk.
It seems like when they've been able to get pressure on him
and not have him break contained.
They've been able to help their secondary out
that struggled a little bit in the fourth quarter.
Shotgun formation, running back to the right side.
Two wide receivers split out, right, one out left, takes a snap.
Rolls to the right, looking downfield.
And he airs it out deep downfield.
Is that going to be no incomplete pass over through him?
Yeah, that ball went out the back of the end zone
and his wide receiver if he had caught that would have been out of bounds.
And he's a little slow to get up.
Got that Hillsdale track right outside of the end zone there.
Yeah, that's not a surface you really want to be falling down on.
Probably would have felt better if he caught it there too.
Maybe a good underthrow, though, or else it would have been picked off.
Two wide receivers out left, three to the right spread formation, sends the man in motion.
Does a little jet sweep.
He's met immediately.
Hunter Sperling, my player of the game, my former roommate, Hunter Sperlin, with a huge TFL.
He only had four coming into this game, but that was a huge one.
That's going to bring down third and 16.
Remember last time in third and long, Hillsdale committed a pass interference penalty.
And bailed Walsh out.
They cannot afford to do that in this situation.
Walsh is looking at their sideline for the play call.
It's two down territory here because they're definitely going to go for it on fourth.
Yeah, you have to to give yourself a chance.
They've got the quarterback running back right behind him.
Two wide receivers split out left, one out to the right, takes a snap, five step drop.
looking deep, airs it out, and he's got a man beat, but it's a bad throw.
Wow, two chargers ran into each other, and a good throw there,
and he can, like, sit under that ball.
That is tough if you're a Walsh fan, but great for the Chargers.
Huge break for the Chargers defense there.
As George said, two Chargers running into each other on defense.
I believe it was number one, Ryan Nixza, and number two, Nolan Strait,
and just misplaced ball there for the quarterback Moll.
and it's now fourth and 16 for the Walsh Cavaliers.
And Muddy Waters is getting loud right underneath us with this home throwed.
A bunch of alumni coming back to see their chargers hopefully win.
And Walsh is going to take a timeout.
Each get one time out for overtime period.
And I wouldn't be surprised if Hillsdale now takes a time out after Walsh comes back from the offense.
But what an exciting game.
Great play by Hillsdale's run game, getting two runs to scampers.
into the end zone.
Putting the pressure on this fourth and 16 play
that, you know, it hasn't been pretty.
They've made a lot of mistakes down the stretch,
but you forget about all of those if you win.
A win has something special about, you know,
making you have a short memory.
Yeah, and especially on your homecoming night,
it's just going to be a huge win for the Chargers.
And their defense has really stepped up in this drive for overtime.
Hunter Smirling with that tackle for loss on that nice outside run.
sweep play and just good coverage all around by the chargers.
That first overthrow in the end zone, there was double coverage.
The chargers were right there to prevent him from catching that.
So just stellar defense.
They've really stepped up in this overtime.
Well, I feel like I've already said this a lot, but this has to be the biggest play of the game
because it's the most recent.
Have a chance to get a stop on 4th and 16.
Spread three wide receivers left, one to the right.
Takes a snap out of shotgun formation, five-step draw.
He's hit while he throws, but he gets the ball off, and it's caught on the sideline.
caught by Walsh and that's going to bring it to the 13 yard line
first down and Mulk is a little slow to get up but he is
jogging down with the rest of his team I mean all credit all credit to TC Mulk
there he was under duress stood in the pocket got hit well he through
but delivered when he needed to and that's tough for Hillsdale but you still
have a chance the game isn't over it's going to be first and 10 from the 13
yard line shotgun formation Mulk dropping
back and oh he escapes the pocket right side to the five to the end zone is he going to score is he out
touchdown walsh dc mouk on a scamper his second touchdown of the night on the ground
and now we're going to see a double overtime assuming that they make the kick for walsh
no penalties on that last play so indeed we're going to see that p a attempt
from kicker Trent door floor well it looks like they're oh they're gonna go for two so this is do or die here
walsh trying to get the win on the road with a two point point conversion running back to the right two wide receivers to the right
pass rollout and it's a timeout by hillsdale looked like they were going to try a little they look like they're going to run a little
cuby rollout try to flood the right side of the field the long side of the field but instead hillsdale gets that time out off
and I don't know what you saw there.
Do you think that's a two-point scored if they get that playoff?
I don't know, man.
This is just incredibly wild game for the Hillsdale Chargers and Walsh Cavaliers.
I mean, adrenaline is running high, even up in this booth.
Everybody's hanging on the edge of their seats as we look to see the Chargers pull this off.
I mean, interesting move here from the Walsh Cavaliers just to go all in on the win.
I guess they see something in the defense that they really like,
that they can expose and walk away and really upset the Chargers on their homecoming week.
Well, I think they feel like they have the momentum, you know, having that fourth and 16,
being able to convert that.
But even still, if I were them, I just kick the PAT and then you get another chance to let,
well, I guess they have to go first in the next overtime period.
So that puts a lot more pressure on them.
Either way, if they get it, you look like very smart.
If you don't, you look like an idiot.
Well, they were successful in their last one, so hopefully, I mean, hopefully for Walsh, yeah.
Hopefully the Chargers can get a stop here though.
And shotgun formation running back right, two wide receivers to the right, takes a snap, play action,
and touchdown two-point conversion, Walsh, and they're going to win that homecoming game.
But there is a flag on the field.
There's a flag on the field.
Let's pull back the reins on this a little bit for the Chargers fans, and it's going to be roughing the passer on Hillsdale.
Walsh runs onto the field and proves to 4-2 in Hillsdale looking for.
for their first home win this year, narrowly escapes at this time.
What a tough way down to the game.
Yeah, Walsh celebrating in the end zone in front of the Hillsdale Faithful.
This is a tough one after such a dominant first half for the Chargers.
You hate to see this type of loss.
It's devastating and it really cuts to the heart, especially for the football team.
Yeah, I mean, I don't know how you recover from this because, again, 28, 13.
going into the fourth quarter.
You had the ball when it was an eight-point game had a chance to put the game away.
But ultimately, Walsh, a very gritty team was able to come back.
And now Walsh has already topped their win total from last year.
This one's going to hurt.
This is going to leave a bad taste in the mouth of Hillsdale for a while.
But you've got to recover and, you know, move on to the next week.
Yeah, it's tough losing these close games.
But they will have to bounce back next week against Lake Erie.
and, you know, get those conference wins added up on their record.
Now, let's, for a few minutes before we close out, let's recap the stars of the game
and, you know, try to end on a positive note.
The people we pointed out at the beginning really had excellent games.
And, yeah, let's do a little recap.
So, Shea Ruddy, he ends the game on the ground.
He had 38 yards on the ground, receiving he had 137,
and then he had that kickoff return for touchdown.
Two touchdowns.
Just a fantastic game as he continues.
His dominant streak,
I wonder what he'll be in Division 2,
All Purpose Yards ranking after this week.
I can't imagine he falls too much
after, you know, well over 200-yard performance.
Well, and, I mean, my game-changing charger, Logan, man, Inc.
He had 100 total yards of rushing
and two touchdowns with the longest one being 23 yards.
Definitely did his best to try to take.
take the chargers to victory on that one.
And George, your guy, Hunter Spurling, he had two unassisted tackles, four assisted with a total of
six and one and a half sacks and two and a half tackles for loss.
So definitely a big game for him as well.
Yeah, there were definitely bright spots.
And I do think throughout the course of the game, Hillsdale probably outplayed Walsh for the
first 55 minutes maybe.
But unfortunately, the football game is 60 minutes.
You got to play to the whistle.
And, you know, a wind narrowly escapes Hillsdale.
seems like it's been the story of this season losing to Ashland by three, losing to Finley by
seven. They're able to beat Northwood by one, but again, they're now back to their losing ways
of losing by one point here. You know, it's really tough. It was a winnable game, but again,
you have to move on to next week. And yeah, I don't know what more to say. Yeah, a tough one for
the Chargers. They got to recuperate, have a good week of practice, and look to the next week.
Well, I think that's about all that I have, unless you want to say anything, Paul.
But we just want to thank you for coming along with the ride with us because it was a ride.
Final score, 36 Walsh, 35 Hillsdale.
