Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and this is a very important episode.
Chances are you're not that interested in what I'm about to say.
Very important doesn't exactly generate hype.
These words are uninspiring.
Very is one of my least favorite adverbs because it doesn't mean anything.
What makes something very good rather than just good or great?
Important tells you nothing about why the thing is important.
Is it useful, inspiring, critical, or something else?
It's often best to avoid descriptive adverbs and adjectives altogether,
opting instead for punchier sentence structures.
But when you do use these words, choose wisely.
Add pizzazz and style to your writing with your descriptors,
but don't overcomplicate things by choosing long or little-known words.
It's a fine art, but well worth cultivating.
That's your Grammar Minute.
