Starting point is 00:00:16 Welcome back to another episode of Heart on the Hill. As always, I'm your host, Michael Hart, and I am so excited to be in the studio today talking to you about all things politics. It is getting closer to Election Day as we speak, and there is a lot going on in the political world right now. So without further ado, let's get into everything going on. So first off, I just want to start with the horrific weather we're seeing down in Florida, and that area in the southern part of the United States, the southeast,
Starting point is 00:00:57 my heart and prayers goes out to everybody dealing with these horrific weather systems that are going through. We had Hurricane Helene, and now we're going to be seeing Hurricane Milton starting up. And it is just so heartbreaking to see these images, hear these stories of people who've lost everything and lost so much due to the chaos created by weather, and it breaks my heart. But I really want to talk about, on the other end of this,
Starting point is 00:01:31 the political side of this. And I've been seeing a lot of reporting on Harris and DeSantis that she called, he didn't answer, back and forth, Biden called, but they didn't go together to the location and to her damage, all of this political chaos. mess, all of it, while we're dealing with a horrific event that took place of and now trying to recover and seeing two storms now that these people are dealing with. And what I want to say on this is this, is that the American people can come together during
Starting point is 00:02:11 these times. The American people deserve answers from any politician, every politician on the right and on the left. They deserve to know what is going on, how they're going to get help. They deserve leaders, not people who just talk and cause arguments, but people who actually lead, who actually govern, who get results and help their people move forward from tragedies like this when businesses need to be rebuilt, when homes need to be put back up, when families need to come together and figure out how they are going to move forward. That's what this is about. This is not political. This should not be political.
Starting point is 00:02:47 I don't care what side you're on. We're all people at the end of the day. That's what matters. We all have lives. We all have stories. We all have experiences. People are going through a tragedy right now, and people are trying to make this a political statement.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Give me a break. That is not the America I want. That's not the America we should want. We should want an America where when people fall and when states have issues and when states are dealing with severe weather, that we come together and move forward. We come together to help them.
Starting point is 00:03:24 We support our communities because at the end of the day, we're all Americans. So my heart goes out to these people who are dealing with this horrific tragedy, these tragedies of these storms, and we need to always remember who we are and what we're doing and where we go from here because that's what matters is
Starting point is 00:03:45 how are people going, to get through. How are people going to rebuild their lives? How are people going to deal with the chaos that was created by these storms? That's what we should always be keeping in mind is how are people going to deal with this, not just how are policies going to deal with this. It's about people. So I hope our politicians can remember that. But more importantly, I hope the American people can always remember that. We are a people before we are a policy. So now I also want to just look at something that's an anniversary. So it's been a little over, like a day or two over the year marker for the Israel War,
Starting point is 00:04:35 the horrific scene we saw unfold last year on October 7th, where Hamas terrorists went in and brutally massacred. Over at least 1,200 people, Israelis and others were killed by Hamas terrorists. who just came in, stormed in, killed people at a music festival in their homes, did horrific and unthinkable things to these children and women and these families. And I just want to take a moment to reflect on that. And I want to take a moment to say every life lost is a precious life lost. We mourn the losses of all these people. And we should always know we cannot stop until every hostess.
Starting point is 00:05:22 is brought back home. We cannot. Israel cannot stop until every hostage is brought back home. And Hamas is completely eradicated. It completely gone. That is what they have to do. I've talked about this before. But Israel is their own country. As shocking as it made sound to some people, Israel's a country, has rights and can do what they need to do. Their first job is to protect their people. That is what their government needs to do. And I think they're doing. that. Now, I think we really need to look at where we stand, where our country stands on Israel. There's a big divide, but I think we always need to stand with our allies. I know we always need to stand with our allies. And Israel's an ally of ours. We need to stand with her. Allow her to do
Starting point is 00:06:08 what she needs to do. To get this done, go after Hamas, finish them, completely get rid of them. That is what needs to be done. And we mourn the lives lost. All the hostages are still being held by Hamas and we just pray for this to come to an end and Israel to win and be able to continue on with their way of lives and always continue to remember who they've lost and always remember though who they are the people they are so I just wanted to take a moment to remember that horrific day and remember where we were and where we're going within this conflict and what's going on currently in the Middle East. So it's it's been a long year for them. And we as Americans should always be standing with them, supporting them as they get through this, as they still deal with this tragedy.
Starting point is 00:07:06 So now I want to shift attention a bit to look at campaigns. The election is coming up. So I want to just focus on some races that I'm watching pretty heavily. And one of the ones is actually close by to us here in Michigan, and that is the Ohio Senate race, which I think is going to be a big one to watch. So I want to talk about this, not just because it's close by, but also because it is the home of Senator J.D. Vance. And Senator J.D. Vance is the Republican vice presidential nominee. So I think it's going to be really important to look at this state. So it's seeming like a pretty close race. I was reading some stuff from the Hill today, and they were saying it's a close race between Marino and Brown. Internal National Republican Senatorial Committee polling has it tied at 46%
Starting point is 00:08:01 according to article I was reading on the Hill. And Moreno is down by 7 in April. So it's getting closer, it seems like he's cutting that number pretty significantly by tying it. So if we look to at this, Sherrod Brown is the current senator from the state, okay? But then you also have J.D. Vance in the state. And you have a Republican guy. governor and Trump does pretty well in Ohio. So it's going to be interesting to see if Sherrod Brown is able to fend off of that strong Republican platform there in that state that they've been able to have. But it also is interesting to me that he's polling at 46%. He won in 2018, Sherrod Brown, by a little bit more than this. He was at 53% on election night. So we'll
Starting point is 00:08:50 see how undecided to look on that night. I think this whole race is also really interesting. because of J.D. Vance, because he is a senator from the state and he's at the top of the ticket. I want to see how that affects this whole Senate race because I think it will. I think it will have some impact. I'm excited to see results come back and see how that looks. I would love to find out more about that because I think that's going to be an interesting connection. Does the top of the ticket with J.D. Vance from that state as VP, not the presidential pick, but VP change anything. And I don't know for sure, but I'm interested to see where that looks. And I want to also focus to on Wisconsin today because that's a big Senate race we're looking at with an incumbent Democrat who has a close race against a Republican.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Timmy Baldwin will be running against Eric Covdy. And it's going to be a pretty close race, I think, as well. And these are a lot of your Midwest states, I think are going to be the close Senate race races in the country. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. I think you have to watch those three states. I obviously don't know how the vote in Senate and presidential and House races, but those are three really competitive states toss-up states to watch Cook Political Report just shifted Wisconsin toward the GUP now a little closer. Now it's a toss-up race. It was lean Democrat. So it's moving in the GOP's favor. It's going to be close. It's going to be a close night. We're going to be up late watching these results come in. I think they're going to be very close. I mean, if you looked at Wisconsin in 2022, Ron Johnson won to the Democrat, Medella Barnes,
Starting point is 00:10:18 by literally a percentage point. So these are really close races you have to watch. These are crucial for Trump to win and they're crucial for Republicans who want to take back the Senate. So I would really say focus on these states, look at them because they're going to be the ones that we need to watch along with. Republicans are watching West Virginia. They're watching Montana. They're watching these states. Democrats, I think Arizona is a big one that they will be watching to see how they can do out there. I think it's going to be a really very, very, very, very close night with the Senate as well.
Starting point is 00:10:53 as the White House and the presidency. So we'll see how it goes for everyone involved in these races. But I think that you have to be watching this one to just see Ohio specifically, really. I think really watch it because I think that VP effect will be interesting to see. So just watch out for that as you're watching results come in. If you are watching results come in, maybe look at that. I don't know if they'll talk about it. But it's something I'm really interested in.
Starting point is 00:11:17 And I think it's something that would be really cool to discuss more and look into. so we'll see where it goes, but there is a lot on the line with these races. Control the Senate is up, and you always want to have your party in power, especially if they are the president, just makes it a lot easier. So we'll see how that goes. It plays a lot into the Supreme Court nominees, and if they get approved or not whenever we have them. So the Senate, these races are huge deals that we need to all be looking at and thinking about.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I know I am at least, I will be watching these, probably all night on election night if we're being quite honest i'll be up for a while so very excited to do that though so now i want to talk about speaker of the house mike johnson and here's what he had to say at the new york stock exchange last week when he was giving a speech in brief summary we applied the principles of president regan the first sitting president to speak here by the way who reminded us that government isn't the solution of the problem government is the problem I certainly believe that. So Johnson also, he laid out a policy agenda that Republicans could follow if they win the majority.
Starting point is 00:12:35 And there were five things on it. It was basically this. Extending the Trump tax cuts, going after China, being on defense against China, increasing oil and gas production and really focusing on energy and energy independence, energy dominance is a big thing within the Republican platform. expanding school choice is big for them as well and cutting the size of the federal government really shrinking that to a more limited government is what I got from this and what I was reading about as I was preparing for this and looking at what is going on. And so these are things I think that are really interesting to see that these are the priorities. So tax cuts make sense. Economy is really big for the Republican Party. It goes hand in hand to hand.
Starting point is 00:13:21 for them. China as well. China is a big threat. It's a big competition piece economically and otherwise through other things with like Taiwan and those foreign um relation issues that we have to see international affairs. So there is that. It makes sense. Energy independence is just a really big thing in general of bringing back jobs here, bringing back oil production here, being reliant on our own resources rather than relying on other countries. Expanding school choice is a big one. This is when I'm very passionate about. I think every child has the right to go to school, no matter what is it code they live in. They have a right to go to a good school. More importantly, we need to be educating our kids. If we are not caring about our future, we are failing for our kids.
Starting point is 00:14:07 We're failing for our future. If we're not caring about education, if we're not caring about what is going on in classrooms, and we're failing. We are self-sabotaging our future as a country, and that is shameful. We need to focus on our kids. This is not about policy. These are about children. This is about children. This is about helping our kids become doctors, nurses, engineers, electricians, teachers, politicians, lawyers, whatever they want to be. This is about inspiring them and allowing them to do that. I think education is the great equalizer of opportunity. It allows kids to go forward. It should be a place where all kids have an equal chance to move forward and get ahead and allow themselves to achieve the American dream. That's what I think education should be.
Starting point is 00:14:50 We need to focus on making it more accessible to children, allowing children to go outside of their designated zip code for school. If that school's failing them and it's failing in general, they shouldn't have to go there. They shouldn't have to go to a failing school because they live in a certain district. That's ridiculous and actually is unfair and untrue to what we should be wanting for our children. And then the last one has to do with the size of the federal government. And I think this one, the speaker talked a lot about fiscal responsibility and where the government should be and should not be basically on that stuff and how they need to be fiscally responsible.
Starting point is 00:15:30 And I think that's a big thing to look at is how the government has dealt with the economy. How has money been dealt with? And we have a lot of debt. We have significant debt that we're all going to have to pay for my generation, future generations after me are going to have to deal with as a consequence. But we cannot continue to spend and do nothing about it. We can't just continue to throw money at the wall and say, oh, we'll be fine, we'll be fine, whatever, whatever, it doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:15:54 It's just we need to do all of this. We can't do that. We can't afford it, nor should we. We should have to balance the budget. Everyone else has to balance a budget. So the federal government should have to balance their own budget and deal with things accordingly and be able to put their money in the process. places where it needs to be and not go so excessive that we're trillions of dollars in debt,
Starting point is 00:16:15 which is absolutely ridiculous. And I think also a lot of this comes down to, for me, at least, within the federal government is returning power back to the states, allowing people to have their power, allowing people to have a say at the local level, the locality should be able to decide on things like how are children educated in our area? How do we deal with this crisis or that crisis in our area? People in D.C. and these bureaucratic agencies do not go. It's going on in small town, Hillsdale, Michigan. Now, the last thing I want to talk about, this just happened.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So I was actually, like, getting ready for the show. It's just looking on Twitter a bit, now called X. But I was looking on that, just going through it to see what's going on in the world right now. And I saw this clip from the view today, and I want to just play it for you quickly. Well, if anything, would you have done something differently than President Biden during the past four years? There is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of, and I've been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact. So that was Vice President, Kamala Harris. Obviously, she's running her president now.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And I find this clip infuriating because she keeps saying we're not going back. We're not going back. It's forward-looking. But frankly, we're not going anywhere if we're going to get Kamala Harris. If you get a Kamala-Harris presidency, it's just another forward. years of Joe Biden. That's what she literally just said right there. I didn't have to say it. Nobody had to say it. She said it herself. Nothing but she she agreed with Biden. She agrees with him. She'll continue those policies. And where have those policies gotten us? We've had higher prices of
Starting point is 00:18:00 food. We've had higher prices of gas. We've had chaos across the world. We've seen countries going to war. We had Russia and Ukraine. We have the Middle East conflict. We see threats with China and Taiwan. We have an insecure border thanks to her a lot because she was supposed to deal with that. and she did nothing. Does she visit much? No. So we have all those things going on. And she says she agrees with Biden. She would keep up what he has, basically, is what she was saying. And that is not what we need.
Starting point is 00:18:27 We need actual change. If policies aren't working, you don't stick to them. If you're, I don't care what party or if your party's policies are not working. You don't stick to those policies. You do what's going to improve the lives of Americans. What is going to allow people to have money in their pockets? It's going to make our world more secure, is going to secure our southern and northern borders. That's what you do.
Starting point is 00:18:51 You do what is best for the American people, regardless of party politics and what policies your party put in place. Because if policies are failing, people are failing. People are hurting. So that's what needs to be looked at. And Kamala Harris made it very clear there that, you know, she thinks these policies are working. Well, get to the middle America. Get to talk to people. hear from people because at least from what I've seen, they're not working. They're not working for me
Starting point is 00:19:17 as a college student who has to go out, buy food, buy gas, deal with things, is trying to, is nervous to enter the workforce after I graduate this year. I'm a senior. I'm graduating. I am frustrated and concerned about the economy I'd be going into under a Harris administration. These are things that need to be considered. These are things that need to be looked at. And Kamala Harris, frankly, just pushed those to the wayside and says, yeah, Joe Biden, things are working. Get out, talk to the people, see what they're saying about these things, because I frankly don't think they're working.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Well, thank you for tuning in to another episode of Hard on the Hill, as always. It's such an honor to have this time to talk about everything going on in politics. We have a few more weeks of the election. I know everyone's kind of getting excited to get it over with. I'm there with you. I'm ready to move on to see what happens and go forward. I think that's what we really need to do. So I am right there in that same spot.
Starting point is 00:20:19 ready for this to be over with and we can just see what happens and go from there as the American people. And I do know no matter what happens on election day that we will always be the American people. We will always be a strong people. We always need to be a people who are with each other, whether we vote one way or the other, no matter what we do and who we vote for, what policies we ascribe to at the end of the day, where the American people who should believe in each other and believe in our mission, our common mission we have of promoting life, liberty and the pursuit of That's what we should be focusing on. And I think that is something to always remember as we get closer to election day.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Thank you so much. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. And I'm like a heart on Heart on the Hill.
