Starting point is 00:00:00 to break into the lineup in the post as well. A young Chargers squad is looking to keep alive a string of six consecutive seasons with 19 or more wins, a stretch that includes four NCAA tournament appearances and two G-MAC titles, despite tough competition from a league that is rising rapidly in both talent and accolades. No matter what, this season is going to be a good season, and I'm excited to see what the Chargers have to bring to the table. Definitely. For ODIU, after four straight seasons of sub.5 records and three seasons of missing the GMAC tournament,
Starting point is 00:00:37 the Panthers are rebooting their program under a new head coach Casey Kaufman. Kaufman comes to ODIU after a successful run-at Malone, helping to lead the pioneers to their only NCAA tourney appearance. He'll do so with a near completely reconstructed roster that only returns one part. Start-time starter Nate Webb and includes six freshmen and three transfers. This new squad has shown definitely some promise with senior forward Jaywan Weatherspoon making an instant impact with 22.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game after transferring in from West Florida. The Panthers also have several strong freshmen including Sean McKittrick, Caleb Brooks, and Luke Ruth, who are all playing big minutes and making in
Starting point is 00:01:31 important contributions. Ohio Dominican has struggled with a one-three start, but the record is misleading, seeing as they have single-digit losses to very solid teams, Lewis, McKendry, and David and Elkins' teams. The Panthers have had no trouble scoring
Starting point is 00:01:47 points as they've broken the 70-point mark in every contest so far, but have struggled to consistently get stops conceding 78 or more points in all four games. That mark will have to improve for the Panthers, contend for a GMAC tour, birth this season. So sounds like they have a pretty decent offense, but are struggling defensively. So let's see if
Starting point is 00:02:11 the Chargers can maximize that weakness today. It looks like last week, the Chargers took on Lake Erie here at home on Thursday, November 30th. And we ended with a win, a 7670 win against Lake Erie. and it looks like we have four other wins with one loss at northern Michigan, 74 to 68. So it's looking good. We have a 5-1 streak so far, which is exciting for the Chargers with this turnover. We are starting. Starting with the national anthem, and then we will get right into the starting lineups. Welcome back to this Charger men's basketball game against Ohio Dominican University.
Starting point is 00:03:27 We are getting started with the starting lineups, starting with Ohio Dominican University. Ohio Dominican University. The coaches on Ohio Dominican men's basketball team are head coach Casey Kaufman. It's his first season at O'DU and the assistant coach Colton Everett who is also in his first season at O'DU.
Starting point is 00:03:58 We are starting with number four. Sean McKittrick, a freshman guard from Dayton, Ohio. We have number 10. Luke Ruth, who's also a freshman guard from Grove City, Ohio. We have number 15, Jeanne Weatherspoon, who's a senior forward from Columbus, Ohio. Number 20, Nate Webb, a senior freshman from Cleveland. And number 22, Caleb Brooks, a freshman forward from Florence, Kentucky. for Hillsdale College men's basketball team, we have head coach Kevin Bradley, who like I said earlier, is in his first season as head coach for the Chargers, and assistant coaches John Chang and Evan Morrissey.
Starting point is 00:04:52 John is in his second season, while Evan is in his first as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team. For Chargers, we are starting with number two. Ashton Janoski, a sophomore, guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Number four, Charles Woodhams, a junior from Estigo, Michigan. Then we have number 14, Walt Mattingly, sophomore from Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Next, we have number 13. CJ Yarium starting a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio. And finally, number 33, Joe Ruder Jr. from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:05:48 And these are our starters for this day's matchup. So Hillsdale seems to have a younger starting lineup than Ohio Dominican, but they've been pretty aggressive and done well so far this season. So it'll be interesting to see if. they can carry that through today. The Chargers were picked to finish 6th in the GMAC preseason poll released in late October. Defending GMAC tournament champion, Ashland, was picked to win the league. And this regular season champion, Walsh.
Starting point is 00:06:43 was picked to finish second. So since joining the league in 2017-2018, Hillsdale has never finished worse than third in the final GMAC standings. Let's see, so starting here for the tip-off, we have sophomore CJ Yerian for Hillsdale and freshman or senior, Juan Weatherspoon. See, Yerian got the tip-off.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Hillsdale's starting down the court with the ball. Let's see. Janowski passes. Now Yeran's got it. Let's see, he'll make... Oh, missed the shot there. It looks like the Chargers were fouled number 22, Sam. Vasu will shoot for two.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Vasu has a 71% free throw average. He just made the first free throw, so nice to start off for our game here. see if you can be two for two. There we go. Second free throw. Sam Vasu, that's number 22 on Hillsdale Chargers. Odeu's got possession of the ball.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Chuan Wetherspoon passes to Sean Kittre for O'DU. Let's see. On Wetherspoon shoots from behind. Oh, he made it. There's three points for O'DU. Joanne Wetherspoon seems like he knows what he's doing. Yeah, he does.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Junior Joe Ruter's got the ball for Hillsdale. Let's see. He's going to take the shot. Oh, he goes. Nice. There's two points for Hillsdale. The score is now four three in Hillsdale's favor. O'DU's got possession of the ball. Hillsdale's bringing the ball back down. Looks like CJ Yerrian screen the other team. So we have a turnover. O'DU is bringing the ball back down. Let's see. Based on those stats we were reading earlier, It seems like ODI's got a pretty good offense, but their defense might be a little bit lacking. So I think it just depends on if we can keep the ball on their side of the quarter or not this game. So Hillsdale brings the ball back down.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Oh, shot by number two. He misses. Odie takes possession of the ball. Number four goes in for the layup and he makes it. Two points for Odie. The score is Hillsville. Not in Hillsdale's favor. Four seven.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Let's see Hillsdale going in for the shot now. Oh. And the ball is out of bounds. Number 21 and number one are going in for Hillsdale. 31, 22 coming out. A foul was just called on number four, Charles Woodhams. Joe Ruda has a ball now. Shoots for three and misses.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Let's see. Hillsdale. No. Has a rebound. Number one. Let's see if we recover that. number 21's got the ball Joe Ruter's got the ball again going in for the
Starting point is 00:12:12 oh makes the layup let's go Hillsdale is now only behind by one point let's see if we can work to close that gap here soon ODAU makes a layup that's two points for ODAU the score is 6-9 with 16 minutes left in a half Joe Reader is standing outside the three point he passes to number one Caleb Glasser
Starting point is 00:12:40 who passes to number 21. Back to Joe Ruter. Outside. 21 pushes in. It's back out to Joe, and he shoots another three, but misses, just barely. Falls out of rounds. All right, so we are going to take a time out.

We are back on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM. Hillsdale is trailing by three points to O'DU. O'DU has a ball now. We are coming down the court. Number 10. Luke loose. Passes it, gets it back, shoots for three, and misses. Hillsdale gets the rebound, traveling back down the court. See, we're still working to close that gap. Charles Woodham's is going in.
Starting point is 00:15:17 He, no, he misses a jump shot. Nobody gets the rebound. O'DiU is taking the ball outside the line. Number two passes it in to Luke Ruth, pushing it down. Number zero has a ball outside the line. He comes in. He passes to 22 who comes in and misses a layup. Hillsdale gets the rebound.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Taking him back down the court, that's number four, Charles Woodhams. Passes 21, passes the one. Let's see if he goes in. Glazer passes to Cole McWenney. Passes to Mikey McCollum, takes a shot. There we go. That's three points for the Chargers. We are tied now, 9-9.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Just under 15 minutes left in the half. Let's see if Hillsdale can work to get the lead here and maintain that offensive position throughout the half. 15 has a ball now. He passes to number 10, Luke Ruth, who passes to two, Parker Schwartz, back to 15. Who misses a three-pointer. Those rebounds are so important and can make a huge difference in a game. All right. Col McGrini passes to Joe Ruter, who loses the ball to O'Dew. Number 22, Sam.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Vasu goes in for Charles Woodhams. We'll start off. Hillsdale's got the ball. Passes the Reuter. Reader passes to number 11, Jacob Meyer. A foul is called. Let's see. First foul for Hillsdale this game. Hillsdale's got the ball. Oh, lose it, recovers it.
Starting point is 00:18:02 It's number 11 taking it back in. Let's see if he's going to go for a shot. He passes number 22, 2-2 to 2-2, hands it off to 33. Back to 22. He takes it up. Let's see. He goes for the layup, and he misses it. Oh.
Starting point is 00:18:15 He'll gets the rebound. No, just kidding. A foul was called on number zero Lackland McDonald on O'DU's side. Vashu's going to take it back in. Throw it to Joe. Oh. That was a very near miss. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Looked straight for the layup and did not make it. Oh, ODIDU, brought it down the line, shot for three and missed. They rebounded it, and we have a little jump ball. A little dog pile on the floor happening there. We got some subs. Charles Woodhens is going in for number 21, Mikey McCollum. And number 10 is going to grab the ball. Luke Ruth from the ref.
Starting point is 00:19:20 He's going to throw it in to number. Number 22, Caleb Brooks. End up to number four there. He's sticking around. Pass it back to 22. Oh, he goes in. It's two more points for O'DU. The score is now 11-9 O'DU's favor.
Starting point is 00:19:44 It looks like number 31, C.J. Yarian, foul is number 22. So 22, Caleb Brooks on O'DU is going to shoot for one, I believe. feels like a pretty even matchup today i think it's going to be a high energy game and it might be playing this game of back and forth for for the next hour or so Caleb Brooks makes the point that's uh nine hillsill 12 o'du hillsill has it c j aurean right now passes the cole mac lilly it's outside back to vashu brings it in throws it to charles woodhams who makes it that's two for the Let's go. We're only behind by one point now.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Odie U dribbles it down, passes to 20 Nate Webb. Number four has it back to 22. Looks like he's going to push and makes a two-quarter. Garrett Bolt passes to McWinney, who's bringing it down. McWanee passes to Vashu, back to CJ Yarian, back to McWinney, to Bolt, to Yarian, outside the three-point line still, back to Vasu, just passing it around right now. Vasu tries for a two-pointer, doesn't make it. Bolt, I know, Woodham's recovers it.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Back to McWinney, who makes a three-pointer. Let's go. Let's go. The score is now tied, 14-14. I think as the game goes on, Hillsdale might be working better to exploit their deeds. defense. It seems like Odieu's, or offense is pretty aggressive, and that might be something that's hard to, uh, to battle this game. Their defense seems pretty good, too. Yeah, it's not bad. From last round, we saw. Hill's Hill Zill gets the rebound. Number two went for two. Bolt gets a rebound and moves it down.
Starting point is 00:21:57 He did Yarian passes it to Bolt, passes it to Woodhams, who pushes in. doesn't go for two get to lock me a little bit back to McWenny back to C.J. Yarian
Starting point is 00:22:12 it looks like the clock is going to run out oh he shoots for two and misses O'DU's got the ball now oh he goes for two number four misses
Starting point is 00:22:29 CJ Yarin gets a rebound and dribbles it down he'll make when he's dribbling it around outside the ball now. three point line. It's like we're setting some people out. And we are going to have another time out. So we are going to take a break. For a media break, you're listening to Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 AFM and we will be right back. Starting point is 00:24:15 We are broadcasting live from the Don Tibbitts Potter Arena here in Hillsdale, Michigan, where the Hillsdale Chargers men's basketball team is facing off Ohio, Dominican University. We're tied 14-14 now. Hillsdale's got possession of the ball and working to Changtack's It goes for the shot and he misses. It was number four. All right. O'DU is going to get the ball. Number 10.
Starting point is 00:24:45 Luke Roof passes it off. It looks like Jay Juan, Weber Spoon. Two. Oh, they lost the ball. Chargers pick it up. Hillside grabs it. Recovers it. Hillsdale's in possession now.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Bring it back down the court. Janouse. has it at the moment he passes it to Ruder back to Woodhams to Jemowski back to Ruder who goes for two and makes it let's go Hillsdale is in the lead now Hilsdale 16 O to you 14 with less than 10 minutes and a half it would be interesting to see if they can further that offensive lead and maintain it throughout the rest of the game or if we're going to be just playing a game of of tag here yeah O'DU has a ball in the paint, passes it out to number 10, who dribbles in.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Oh, it looks like he made to pass it to number 25, but it goes out. Reuter's going to get the ball for the Chargers. Ritter takes it, passes it to Janowski, who dribbles down, back to Woodham's. Let's see, passed it back to Glazer, who passes it to Ruter. To my column, who tries for a three-pointer and misses? Hillsdale almost gets the rebound, but rebounds it out of bounds. So O'DiU now has the ball. We're subbing out.
Starting point is 00:26:44 O'Doo passes it in. Brings it down the court. Defense is ready. Oh, but they go in for a two-pointer, miss it. Rebounded by Charles. Charles Woodham has a ball still at the moment. He passes it to Router. He passes it to Woodham's, who passes it to Glazer, and he makes a two-point shot.
Starting point is 00:27:13 We are now Hillsa 18, O'DU 14, eight minutes off in the half. Bill Zills working to increase and maintain that offensive margin. Number 10 for O'DU goes in for a two-pointer and misses. They have, it's been a couple of winners since they've made a shot. It looks like our defense is picking it up. Ruter got that rebound to get back down the court. All right. It is time for a media timeout.
Starting point is 00:27:49 So we are going to take a break. You are listening to Chargers Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.0.7 FM. We'll be right back. Welcome back to Radio Free Hillsdale where we are live broadcasting the Hillsdale Chargers men's basketball game from Don Potter to Bitz Arena versus O'D.D. The score currently is 1814 in Hillsdale favor. It's been kind of a game of tag up until this point, but it seems like Hillsdale's starting to find their groove and maintaining an offensive lead.
Starting point is 00:29:33 21 on Hillsdale's side, McComberon passes it in. Janowski has it now, passes it to Vasu, who gives it to Glasser. It goes for two, but narrowly misses. O'D has the ball now, is it taking it down the court. Number 10 is passing it outside the line. Has it again after passing it off a couple times.
Starting point is 00:30:03 They are just passing it around, juggling the ball. Number 10 goes for a shot and makes it. That's two for O'DU. Bringing the score up to Hillsill 18, O'DU 16. 21 McCollum has it. He passes it to Glasser, who passes it to Vasu, who passes it to Root. you're outside the line right now.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Glasser has it again. Back to Janowski. Back to Vasu. And Janowski has it again. Stron it around. Ruder goes for three and barely misses. It hits the rim and bounces off. O'DU rebounds it and is passing it outside the line.
Starting point is 00:30:51 21 K.N. Durdin passed it off. Oh, goes for the shot. Hillsdale with the rebound. Ruder takes the ball back down the court. Let's see if we can make something happen here. McCollum has the ball now, passes it to Janowski. Back to Vasu. Back to Janowski.
Starting point is 00:31:15 McCollum looks like he's going to go in for two and makes the shot. Wow. It was awesome. He had like four men on him and still made that. Yeah. Odie, you got the rebound. Are walking back. This score is Hillsdale 20, Odu 16.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Let's see if ODAUs... O'DU's... OU goes for the layup and makes it. That was number 20 on O'DU, but... Janowski takes the ball back down the court for Hillsdale. Rashu goes in for two and makes it. The score is 22, 18, Hillsdale's up. We have five minutes and 20 seconds left in the half.
Starting point is 00:31:59 It's been a really high-energy game today. Yes, it has. I'm in the edge of my seat. 21. Oh, 21 is blocked by Vasu who runs down, tries for a two-corner, and misses. Wow. That was crazy. Yumps. I kind of thought what happened for a second, but... Me too. All right, so we are stepping some people out. McCollum's out, Reuters out, Reuters out, Glacers out, Winem's back in, McWinney's in, and Bolt is in. Number zero, Lackley McDonald passes it off.
Starting point is 00:32:57 All right, number 22, pushes in. He goes for two and he makes it. When 22 can get in the paint, there's nothing going to stop him. It looks like he can body a lot of guys on our team. He's aggressive. He's large, very tall. Let's see, he is, he's 6'9 from Kentucky, 220. pounds. So when he's in the paint, nothing's going to stop him.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I was going to say that reach is probably helpful. Yeah, exactly. We are going to take another timeout break. Starting point is 00:34:49 where we are live broadcasting from the John Hibbitts Potter Arena, the Hillsdale Chargers men's basketball team versus Ohio Dominican. Hillsdale just made another shot. Hillsdale, the score is 27 Hillsdale to 20 ODU. So we are further increasing that winning margin. While we were gone, Garrett Bolt made a two-pointer, followed by Cole McWittie who made a three-point shot. McWenney has the ball now.
Starting point is 00:35:24 passes it to bolt to Vasu back to bolt and we are waiting for a shot to be made to further this growing gap between Hills Zone O'DU Vashto goes for two points misses it but it is it is pushed back up by Yarian and they get two points score is 29 Hillsdale 22 O'DU it's been a really high intensity game every time Chargers scores seems like ODAU scores again, and then maybe the Chargers will score a little bit more. So Hillsdale seems to be, they seem to have slightly established their offensive dominance, but not so much that I don't think something could turn around at the last second. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:36:18 We have two minutes and 30 seconds up in the game, and it looks like we're going to take another time out. You're listening to Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, and we'll See you after the break. Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we're exploring the universe 60 seconds at a time. I'm Lauren Smith, and today we're excited about a month of meteors. Each year while planet Earth illuminates Christmas lights, major meteor showers illuminate the November night sky. In 2023, three showers will fill the month. First come the torids, streaming from the direction of tourists in the south and east,
Starting point is 00:36:57 peaking November 12th. Next are the spectacular Leonids, appearing from the direction of direction of Leo in the north and east, peaking November 18th. And the finale, a second Orionids, radiating from the direction of Orion in the south and east and peaking November 28th. Remember that meteors can be seen for weeks before and after peak dates. So on any clear November night, bundle up and scan the sky for these dazzling astronomical lights. And that's your Astro Minute. Welcome back to the game. We've seen a lot of good work from Samuel. Batchez who's singing the first consistent means of his career for the Chargers this season.
Starting point is 00:37:43 He's making a huge impact for wholesale at the defensive team. Three and five games, he's one of the seven GMA players averaging two and more skills again. All right, so we're back. It looks like O'DU is going to grab the ball. Do you think he's doing well? Turn over.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Joe Ruter's going to get the ball. See, the Chargers working the ball back down the court. Rooters got the ball again. Passes back to McWenney. McCollum passes back to McQuinnie. Ruter has got the ball. Let's see. Oh, Ruter goes for the three. Misses. O'Dew gets the rebound. Take it back down the court. O'DU goes for a shot misses, but he'll still gets a rebound. That's McWenny works the ball back down the court. passes off to Woodhams, who passes off to McCollum, and balls now back in McQuinnies' hands.
Starting point is 00:39:01 McCollum, or nope, that was, Urian goes for the basket. Oh. The ball is rebounded by a senior, um, Weather spoon. They are down the court. And Weatherstone passes it. Number 28, 20, sorry. And O'DU shoots for two makes it.
Starting point is 00:39:29 The score is now 29 Hillsdale, 24, Ohio, Dominican. We have just over a minute left in this half. And it charges right now to have, so O'DU is going to get the ball. While Hillsdale has graduated four starters and three all GMAC players from last season's, 23-win team. The Chargers do have significant returning talent, primarily led by Junior Joe Ruter. The GMAC freshman of the year in the 2021-22 and second team All-G-Mack Honorie in the 22-23 season. Router averaged 12.5 points and six rebounds per game. Last year is a key player for Hillsdale. He's off to an impressive start averaging over 17 points and five rebounds in five games this season.
Starting point is 00:40:32 his shooting percentages are close to the 50, 40, 90 mark that's considered a holy grail for efficient basketball scores, as Router is making 51.7% field goals, 39.3% of three-partners, and 81% of free throws so far. With a young squad in the 23-24 season, the Chargers will be leaning heavily on his experience and leadership. And I think that has been evident throughout this game as well. Time is dwindling for this first half, and it looks like ODAU is going to try to run out most of the clock. Just nine seconds left on the clock. Scores 29, Hillsdale, 27, O'DU. There's not much time left, but still enough time for something to happen.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Hillsville fouled, and so O'DU took it out. Weatherswin's going to go for a shot. He misses a two and the ball is out of bounds. We have one second left in the half. All right, and that's going to be the half. So our score right now is 2927. I lied about it being the half. The Chargers are taking a time out.
Starting point is 00:41:57 So we are going to be right back. You are listening to Chargers Basketball on Radio Free Hills at 101.0.1.0.m. Hello and welcome back to Radio Free HILSA 101.7 FM live broadcast of the men's basketball game against O'DU. We are starting the second half with a Hilso lead 29 to 27. And right now O'DU is taking the ball down the court. Oh, ball. out of bounds after both Hillsdale and O'DU attempt to rebound it. This season, Hillsdale is looking to continue a very impressive run of recent successes over the last
Starting point is 00:42:57 six seasons or so that includes two GMAC championships, four 20 plus win campaigns, four NCAA D2 tournament berths, two Sweet 16 appearances and a Midwest regional title and an elite eight appearance in 2021-22 season. The Chargers have had 21 or more wins in each of the last three seasons and made an unprecedented three straight NCAA tournament appearance. It seems like while we were just taking a little break, ODAU scored a two point or so. The score is not 29 to 29. ODIU is back down the court again, passing it around the line. we'll see if they put any solid throws.
Starting point is 00:43:50 It's been consistent with sort of the pattern throughout this game where Hillsdale-Rode U gets a lead and the other words to close that gap. And so it's been pretty neck-and-neck this whole time, again, pretty evenly match competition. The fact that we're now starting out the second half tied. So that leaves, you know, the future or the outcome of this game really up to what's going to happen to the second half. Yeah. Yarian just put up a two-pointer in the paint. So 3129 with 18 minutes left in the half.
Starting point is 00:44:26 10 Ruth passes it. Weather spoon has it now. Back to Ruth. Ruth is dribbling. Passes it inside to number 20. Passes it back out. Pushes it inside and goes for two and makes it. It makes a shot.
Starting point is 00:44:46 31-31. Knack and neck. Exactly. The women's basketball team faced ODIU earlier this afternoon and won by a pretty large gap. So this is surprising to me, but it'll still just put in a three-border. So 34-31 is what we're looking at right now. Yeah. With a spoon passes it over.
Starting point is 00:45:20 Oh, Ruter. stops it and steals it back down the court to Woodhams, to Vasu, to Janowski, who passes it to Reuter. And Reuter goes in, oh, but it looks like a foul is called. Let's see what is going on. All right, looks like Hilsa was fouled. So we're going to be able to throw the ball in. else he's going to take it from the ref he is going to pass it to yarian to vashu to rudder he has it now vasu goes in puts up a two misses it's rebounded by odu who dribbles it down the court
Starting point is 00:46:12 whether spoon has a ball now he's going to go for two and he makes it well 34 33 hillsill takes possession of the ball and brings back down the court 31 passes number four Number four passes it to 33. Joe Ruter back to number four. Let's see. He takes it. He shoots and misses O'DU gets the rebound. 25 passes it to 22.
Starting point is 00:46:47 22 again just bodies CJ Yari and to go for a two-pointer but misses. Looks like a foul has been called. A foul is called on C.J. Yalia number 31. It looks like 22. Caleb Brooks is going to shoot for O'DU. It's been given the opportunity to close Hillsales winning their leading gap and maybe even take control of the game. The score right now is 34 Hillsdale 33 O'DU.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Misses his first free throw. Caleb Brooks has a 72% average. for three throws. Let's see if he can make the second one and, you know, close the gap. 34 would be right up against 34. Mm-hmm. And he goes for it. He misses.
Starting point is 00:47:52 He misses both. Number four is taking it back down the court. Woodham's has the ball. He passes it to Glasser, back to Rooter, to McCollum, back outside to Woodham. to Ruter who goes for two and it makes it. He falls down and slides across the floor. O'DU is dribbling it down the court.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Hillsdale score 36 to O'DU's 33. Hosedale seems like they're just barely maintaining the offensive lead right now. Odie you went for a three. My number 25, Zach Kimball, but missed. Oh, no. Wouldem put it up for two? missed. Glacer got the rebound and put it back up for two. We're at 38 Hillsdale, 33 O'DU with 15 minutes up to a half. O'DU has a ball right now. Wetherspoon is dribbling outside the line. He's
Starting point is 00:48:58 going to push in and go for it to, but it pushes it too far. Misses the basket. McWenney brings it down. Router has a ball now, passes it to Glacier to McWenny, to Rutter who's underneath the net looks like and he goes for it he went for the two and got it 4033 hillsdale hillsdale is receiving votes in both the d2 c sc media poll and the nabc poll this week um they were ranked sixth in the midwest region by the d2 c sc and hillsdale has been ranked in at least one pool during the season for each of the last four seasons aty you has a ball right now number 10 ruth It's dribbling it out. It looks like the shot clock is going down.
Starting point is 00:49:48 But the ref goes the whistle. We'll see what is going on. Fowell is called on Joe Ruder. And right now we are going to take a media time out. So you're listening to the Charger Basketball live stream on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. And we will see you after the break. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101. Starting point is 00:51:08 And Sundays at 3 a.m. on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. We are back. We are at about 14 minutes in the second half. This score right now is Hillsdale 40 in ODU. is at 33. It's in a really exciting match so far. Just neck and neck the entire game. Nobody's been able to really pull away and have a significant advantage over the other team.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Right now, O'DU has the ball. We're passing it around the three-point line. Wetherspoon has a ball right now. He's just going to pass it to Ruth, who's going to go in, and he goes for it, too, and he makes it. 4033 Hillsill is still up. Cole Mike Winnie's going to dribble it down.
Starting point is 00:52:06 Glacier has a ball now. He passes it to Ruter, and Ruter is going to go for three. And he misses. I've noticed Hilsl, last season we went for a lot of three-pointers, and that is how we, like, made significant advantages in the game. And I'm interested to see if under different leadership will take the same, we're changing things up. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:52:37 Weather spoon just, I believe he got fouled, was on the ground. So it looks like Wetherspoon might be shooting for two. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it seems like Ruter definitely is still at least attempting to make a lot of three-pointers. And I don't know if that's something from his natural skill set, or like you said, that might be partially because he's older and was influenced by past leadership, whereas our younger players haven't been as shaped by that. Looks like Wetherspoon has a 80% free throw average,
Starting point is 00:53:12 so we'll see if you can put these up. And in addition with shooting three-pointers, a consistent theme in the Chargers success over the last six seasons as an excellent three-point defense. And so the numbers on that is great for the Chargers. And now Router is holding the ball outside the line, passes to Woodham's basses to my column, who shoots for three and he makes it.
Starting point is 00:53:47 I think we have some really strong freshman talent on the team this year. Absolutely. It's exciting to see for sure. Speaking of talented freshmen, we have redshirt freshman. CJ Urian has been having an excellent season. He put together a special performance in his debut for the Chargers. He recorded 15 rebounds and eight assists in. Hillsdale's 71-65 victory over Wayne State a couple weeks back in early November.
Starting point is 00:54:15 It's the most combined rebounds and assists in a single game by a charger since Matt Lanarchek put up 16 rebounds and seven assists against Marcy Hearse. In January of 2003, which was over 20 years ago, the younger brother of three all-time GMAC players, Austin, Irian. CJ figures to be an important part of the rotation for the Chargers this season. He's one of those guys that are just big. Like he's 16, 230 pounds. He can grab those balls and push people out of the way.
Starting point is 00:54:47 It'll be interesting to see, too, yeah, what he does over the next four years if he's already made this much of an impact. Right, right. That's number four, I believe, just made a free throw for Hillsdale. Bringing the score to 46 Hillsdale, 36 O'DU. We've got a 10-point lead right now. Let's see if we can maintain that throughout the remainder of the half. 22 is dribbling. He passes it to 15. It looks like, oh, Witherspoon passes it outside. And number two goes for three, but misses. Vasu rebounds it, brings it down the court. Gives it to Woodhams, passes it to McCollum, back to McGillenny. And then Woodhams makes a three.
Starting point is 00:55:30 49, 36, hills those up. Just over 10 minutes, we're at 1150. It looks like the Chargers are making significant headway. Woodham's has been really leading and scoring. He has an average of 17.6 points per game in a career high, 21 points, in wins over Saginaw Valley in the University of Michigan-Dierborn. His 63.2% field goal percentage is fantastic for a guard and ranking him second among all GMAC players throughout five games. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:56:08 All right, it looks like we are taking a time out, so we will come back to you. You are listening to Chargers basketball on Radio Free Hillsome 101.7 FM. See you soon. On the court right now is number two.
Starting point is 00:57:33 Ashton Janowski, 21, Michael McCollum, number four, Charles Woodhomes, 31 CJ Yerian, and 24, Garrett Bolt. Garrett Bolt has the ball right now, passes it to Yerian. Back to McCollum, who goes for three in just misses. O.D.U. with a rebound, taking it back down the court. ODAU is going to be hard pressed to close up this gap. But it's definitely within the realm of possibility, given that they have been pretty offensively aggressive throughout their seasons this far. The whistle was blown. A foul was called on Charter's number four, Charles Woodhams. And so we are going to go into our media time out. We'll be right back. You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 101.1.7 FM. Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor.
Starting point is 00:58:44 Here's Jinnah Suhita. On September 17th, 1944, First Lieutenant Donald K. Schwab was leaving his company across exposed ground in France when intense enemy fire came without warning from the woods directly in front of them. Schwab protected his men and led them forward into the enemy fire. he rallied his force and struggled to within 50 yards of the Germans before ordering his men to hit the dirt. He rushed forward alone, firing his carbine at the German foxholes, aiming for the vital enemy machine pistol nest. He charged the German emplacement, ripped off the half cover, struck the German gunner in the head, and dragged him back through a hail of fire to friendly lines. First Lieutenant Schwab's action so disorganized hostile infantry resistance that the enemy forces withdrew, abandoning their formidable defensive line.
Starting point is 00:59:26 For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, above and beyond the call of duty, First Lieutenant Donald Schwab was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back. You are listening to Chargers basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we are giving you a play-by-play of the game live here from the Don and Tibbitts Potter Arena, where the Hillsdale College men's basketball team is facing off with ODIU. It's been a tight game so far.
Starting point is 00:59:58 We have 11 minutes left in the second half in Hillsdale's leading, with a score of 49 to O'DU's 39 points. Right now ODIU is attempting a free throw, which he made. So it brings us to a score of 49 Hillsdale to 40 O'DU. Luke Ruth, a freshman from Grove City, Ohio, has a 76% free throw average. And it looks like you made both. So now Hillsdale has an eight-point lead. Garrett passes to Yarian
Starting point is 01:00:34 Vasu has a ball, passes it to McCollum, back to Janowski, back to Bolt. Bolt has it, dribbles now, back to Yarian. Yarian passes it to McCollum.
Starting point is 01:00:47 McCollum's going in, and he's going to go in. Oh, it looks like it's going to be a turnover, so O'DU is going to get the ball. Number 20 is going to get that for O'DU, Nate Wav. freshman from Mafia and Diana.
Starting point is 01:01:03 He's going to walk it down with Ruth. North 4 has it now, passes it to 20, hands it off to 10, back to 22. 10 has it again. Back to 22, who's going to go in for 2? And he messes. It looks like Garrett Bolt got the rebound, passes it to He's going to run it down the court.
Starting point is 01:01:34 Ashton Janowski has it now back to Garrett Bolt to C.J. Yaron. To Janowski, who looks like he's going to go for two. And he just misses. ODI with the rebound, taking it back down the court. It's number four. Passes to number 10. Ruth has a ball right now. It looks like he tried to go in, passes it back out to two.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Who goes for three and makes it. At brings their score to Hillsdale 49 at ODU's 44. So like I said, never too late for anything, especially in basketball. They don't need much time to turn the game around a lot. We have about 10 minutes left in a half. Oh, and it looks like McCollum just went for two, got fouled, and it's going to shoot for two. My column is a freshman from Lewis, in Ohio, and his shooting average at the free point. line, free throw line, excuse me, is two for two. He is 100% average.
Starting point is 01:02:45 Oh, now it's three for three. Three for three. Can't complain about those stats. Ruter is coming in for CJ Yarium. Audio switched out some guys. My column's going to shoot again. Four for four, 100%. Free throw average. It's all right. Awesome. All right, O'DU has a ball. Number 20 passes and then to Ruth. Ruth's going to dribble it down. All right, it's outside the line. Four passes it to, what is that? Number 10? Yes. Ruth makes a layup.
Starting point is 01:03:42 5146 Hillsdale, nine minutes. Ruder's got the ball. He passes it 224. Here at Bolt, passes it 222. who's going in and looks like Nick Webb so foul called on O'DU
Starting point is 01:04:12 Mm-hmm Janowski's gonna get the ball passes it to bolt back to Woodhams he's got two guys on him but he makes it he just misses
Starting point is 01:04:27 Wether Spoon's gonna run the ball down his spoon passes it to number four to Ruth, Ruth looks like he's going to try to push in. And he's going to shoot for two. And it's just too deep.
Starting point is 01:04:48 Woodham is bringing it back down. Ruter has the ball now. Rooder throws Jannowski to Woodhams, who might go in, but doesn't throws it back out to Vashu. To Jannowski, back to Ruder. Ritter goes in, he shoots, and he just misses. ODI's got the ball and bringing him back down the court. It seems like they're going to really be trying to make their defense,
Starting point is 01:05:18 or their offense as aggressive as possible in this last few minutes. All right, we are going to take a timeout break. For media, so you've been listening to Chargers basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7F8M. We will be right here when you get back from this media break. Telling the stories of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor. Here's Jinnah Suhita.
Starting point is 01:05:45 On March 9 to 12, 1966, Sergeant First Class Benny G. Adkins' camp was attacked early in the morning. Adkins manned a mortar position to defend the camp. Fighting continued until early the next morning when enemy forces launched their main attack. When all mortar rounds were expended, he used every available resource to continue his resistance. In order to evacuate, Adkins and a small group of soldiers dug through the back of the bunker and fought their way out of the camp. When he learned that the last helicopter had already departed, Adkins took charge until they were rescued two days later.
Starting point is 01:06:15 During the 38-hour battle and 48 hours of escape and evasion, Adkins killed an estimated 155 enemy fighters while sustaining 18 different wounds to his body. For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Sergeant First Class Benny G. Adkins was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is Minute of Honor on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Welcome back to Chargers basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we are broadcasting live from the Don Tibbitts Potter Arena.
Starting point is 01:07:10 The Hillsdale College men's basketball game is currently facing off against Ohio Dominican University. The Chargers have a lead with the score at 51 to ODUs 46. We have just under eight minutes left in the second half, so still time for this to become anybody's game. Sean McHittrick on O'DU's team, a freshman from Dayton, Ohio. Just shot for two after being fouled and he made both of them. Buder has a ball now for the Chargers to Glacier, to McWenny, to Vasu, back to McWinney, to Woodhams. Seems like we're out of stand still right now, but it's gone to McWinney. And back to Woodhams who ran around.
Starting point is 01:08:02 He shoots, ah, it just misses. What are you going to run the bowl down? Number 20 passes it to Ruth. Number 10, to 4. To 20. Our defense is putting up a strong fight. 25 goes up, goes for two, misses it. Ruter rebounds, passes it to Woodham 2, who runs down and makes it two point.
Starting point is 01:08:36 It's 53, 47 Hillsdale, 6.52 left in the half. Number 25 has the ball. He passes it to Weatherspoon. Passes it to McCitrick. Weather spoon gets a ball again. Oh, he tries to do a fake, misses it, and then rebounds and gets the two. Weather Spoon seems to be a pretty strong offensive player for O'DU. He seems like he's been just all around the court today. And Ruth, too. Ruth is doing a good job on both offense and defense. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:09:17 It's a very high-energy game. I think it just really will come down to who wants it more and who's better prepared to be able to work both the offense and the defense. It's interesting because O'DU's team right now is, pretty much all freshmen. And so they have one returning senior and the rest of them are young kids who like don't have as much experience.
Starting point is 01:09:44 But they're putting up a solid fight even as a young team. Which is interesting to see. Definitely. You almost can't tell. They seem pretty cohesive. So that could mean a really strong team from them the next couple years. Right. Exactly. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:10:02 See, Hillsville's got the ball. 22 passes to 11. Mikey McCollum pass it back to Ruder Ruter's got the ball Oh he's going in for a lit Oh no he's got it Mm hmm dismisses Rebound weather spoon takes the ball
Starting point is 01:10:17 On O2U side is bringing it back down the court Let's see It goes in Oh Hillsdale with the rebound Bashers bringing it down Hands off to Gassu Gasselor
Starting point is 01:10:36 Gassler glasses Excuse me just went in for a shot But missed O'DU with a rebound. Weatherstein's pretty aggressive. We grab that ball. Number 10, Ruth, a shribling goes in for two and makes it. Oh, it's a close game.
Starting point is 01:10:56 Hillsdale 53 to ODIU 51. We still got five minutes, just over five minutes left in the game. So it's going to be, I think, a really high energy finish. It hasn't been this entire game. It's really coming down to the wire here, though, so I think it's going to come down to who can maintain that sort of aggression and energy. without giving up a strong defense as well. All right.
Starting point is 01:11:25 Mikey McCollum's coming in. Ashton Janowski and Cesar Yarian are all coming in. Cole McWittany and Caleb Glasser come out. It's like Janowski's going to get the ball. He's going to throw it into the chargers. Oh, grab the ball. Yeah. Out of the air.
Starting point is 01:11:46 So do you. Ruth grabs that ball. brings it down. Oh, Hills though with the rebound. Number four, number two's got it now, taking it back down the court.
Starting point is 01:11:59 Reuters got the ball again. Pass it off to Yerian. Passes it to number four. Charles Woodhams. Woodams has it. And he goes for a two jump shot that misses. And then 25s at Kimball brings it down for Odea. They're kind of at the standstill right now.
Starting point is 01:12:32 Odieu has a ball. trying to get it closer to the net, but Chargers defense is putting up a strong fight. Very strong fight. 22 shoots for three, excuse me, but misses. Joe Reader rebounds the ball and brings it down. All right, we are going to take a time out. Thank you for tuning in to Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hilldale 101.7 FM. We will be right back.
Starting point is 01:13:06 Hi, I'm Joshua Caledino, a PhD candidate at Hillsdale College. Here's master's student Nathan Nevo with a message from George Washington. George Washington, in his farewell address, said, Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports, in vain would the man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness. these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.
Starting point is 01:13:46 The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Hillsdale College, pursuing truth, defending liberty since 1844. Welcome back. You are listening to Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we are broadcasting live from the Don Tibbitts Potter Arena here in Hillsdale, Michigan,
Starting point is 01:14:23 where the Hillsdale College men's basketball team is facing off with Ohio Dominican University. The score right now is 53 Hillsdale to 51 Ohio, Dominican. We have just under four minutes left in the second half of the game. At this point, it could be anybody's game. It's been sort of a game of catch-up throughout this afternoon. Hillsdale's got the ball. Number four is going in. He passes to two.
Starting point is 01:14:59 He's a foul called on number zero from Ohio. So Hillsdale's got an opportunity for some free throws here. Number two, Ashton Janowski, who is a sophomore from ProWalky, Wisconsin. These free throw points could make a difference here in the end of the game. He misses the second free throw. So scores 54-51 Hillsdale. Ohio's got the ball. Bringing back down the court, 25 passes to 10.
Starting point is 01:15:47 Who misses? She just tips the ball out of bounds. Chargers have possession of the ball. Number 33 breeder is going to start. He's got the ball. He passed it off to number two. He's working the ball down the court. Passed it off to number four.
Starting point is 01:16:08 Number four to 31. Four gets the ball. It goes for the basket, but he misses. O'DU gets the ball and takes it back down. The other side of the court, number zero's got the ball. Pass it off to 22. It's been a pretty evenly matched up game. It's been high intensity.
Starting point is 01:16:29 And number 15, Weather spoon goes for a basket, but misses. I think it just comes. down to whoever can can have both a strong offense and defense because both teams seem to be doing pretty well in each respect. So we will see how the game plays out in the next three minutes. Weatherspoon, this is his first free throw. We'll see if he can make this next one here. It could mean all the difference for his team with just the three point, just losing by three point margin right now. Weather spoon makes his second free throw, giving Hill Zill just a small margin. of two points ahead of ODAU.
Starting point is 01:17:21 We're sitting with three minutes on the clock. Janasky brings the ball down. He dribbles it around the line. I think we're going to really get to see here who is better prepared to play under pressure for high stakes. Number two's got the ball. Pass to 21.
Starting point is 01:17:42 21. They miss. I feel like they're getting real nervous. O'DU's got the ball, bringing it back. on the court. I think that's true for the last couple of minutes. We've missed a lot of shots that we put up. Oh, goodness. We have a layout on the floor. Number two and number 33, Janowski and the Ruder were on the ground. And the whistle was blown. Looks like Janowski fouled number four. He's going to shoot for two, I believe.
Starting point is 01:18:19 leave. I think that was Janowski's third foul of this game. Number four makes, makes the free throw. Number 10 and 25 come in for O'DU. Hillsville's sitting at 54 and O'DU at 53. It's scary. It's a close game. It's very high stakes. I think since Hillsdale's won the last seven matchups against O'DU for both sides, it's an important game. Oh, missed that free throw. So Hill still up by a point, but obviously Hillsdale is not looking to break that winning streak. And at the same time, Ohio Dominican, I'm sure, wants it more than anything. So again, it comes down to, I guess, just who wants it more. Ritter has a ball now.
Starting point is 01:19:24 He dribbles it. I don't know if he's going to go for three. He fakes out for two and makes it. That brings Hillsdale's score to 56 to Ohio, Dominicans 53, with just. under two minutes left on the clock. It's an exciting game here this afternoon. Whoa, Hillsdale manages to keep the ball inbounds, bringing it back down to see if we can put some more points on the board.
Starting point is 01:19:55 I think that three-pointers, which we have been good out in the past, those are the points that are going to set you apart and put some space between you. Definitely. So see if our offense can pull some off. Janowski goes for a shot and makes it. Let's go. 5853, a minute and 15 seconds left in a half.
Starting point is 01:20:19 And we are going to take a break right here. Thank you for listening. To charge your basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM, we'll be right back. Starting point is 01:21:30 Hillsdale.com. You're listening to Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. We're back live from Dawn to its Connor Arena, with just a little bit over a minute left in our matchup where the Hillsdale College Men's Basketball. basketball team is taking on Ohio Dominican University. It's a high stakes game and there's not much time left. Hillsdale's looking to defend
Starting point is 01:21:54 their previous seven game winning strength against their last matchups against ODIU and I can imagine that ODIU is looking to break that pattern. Number 22 must have gotten foul if he shoots a free throw and makes it.

Starting point is 01:24:39 1-1.1.7 FM. We'll be right back. Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime. I'm Tate Christensen. Today we talk about Jackie Mitchell, one of the first and one of the only female baseball players in baseball history. Mitchell was born on August 29, 1913 in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up, Mitchell played many sports, including basketball, swimming, tennis, and baseball.
Starting point is 01:25:04 In her teenage years, the Mitchell family moved to Chattanooga, where she joined a baseball school and scouts from the Chattanooga Lookouts saw her pitch. In 1931, she signed a temporary contract with the Lookouts to play two exhibition games that year. On April 2nd, 1931, in a game against the New York Yankees, Mitchell, at just 17 years old, was put into pitch for the lookouts. The first batter she faced was Babe Bruf. She threw three pitches to him, two swings and misses, followed by a called third strike. After Ruth, Lou Gehrig was up to bat.
Starting point is 01:25:32 Again, she took only three pitches to ring him up. Many people are skeptical of this game, however, and think that it was staged or was a publicity stunt. Following this game, Mitchell played baseball on and off until her official retirement from baseball in 1937. This has been the old ball game on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
