On this episode of Rumor has it, we turn once again to an American scandal. This time we are spilling the tea on Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel.

You're listening to Rumor Has It with Addy Longnaker. Hello, hello, and welcome back to Rumor Has It. Today, we're diving into the story of Andrew Jackson. Long before Andrew Jackson's controversial presidency, he was married to a woman. woman named Rachel Donaldson in 1791. She had previously been married and believed that she was legally divorced when she married Jackson. However, not long after marrying Jackson, Rachel found out

that this was not the case. Rachel's ex-husband came forward and accused her of adultery with Jackson. They had to wait until 1794 to legally get married once again. Even though this happened over 30 years before his presidency. When Andrew Jackson was running for president, his opponents did not hesitate to bring this back up. The tabloids were so terrible and so nasty to Rachel that she grew ill and died just before Jackson won the presidency. Jackson never got over her death

and held John Quincy Adams responsible for his tragic loss. Some say that many of the poor decisions Jackson made throughout his presidency was due to the loss of his beloved wife. Either way, their decisions early in life were rather scandalous, but due to the time period and the difficulty with mail and the legal system, they genuinely thought that they had done the right thing.
