You can't believe a word she says most times, but this time it was true. Now, rumor has it, she ain't got your love anymore. Hello, hello, and welcome to Rumor Has it. I'm Addie Longnaker. Today, we're talking about the story of Dido and Annius as found in Virgil's Aeneid. See, Annius had escaped the burning of Troy and sailed off. The gods had promised him the founding. of a great city what would one day become Rome.

On the way, he stopped in Carthage, where Queen Dido ruled. Falling in love with her, Dido and Annius were secretly married by the gods, Juno and Venus. Aeneas was reminded, however, of his great calling, and was told by the gods that he must continue on his journey, for seeking Dido and leaving behind their marriage rights. When Dido realized what Annius was planning, she had him build a great pyre, and said, that she planned to burn all of the things that he had given her on it in order to cleanse her mind of him. What he did not realize is that she was planning on taking her own life. Aeneas sailed away at the behest of the gods on his way to a greater calling, founding Rome,

and Daita was left picking up the pieces. She ultimately died, and many are left to debate whether Annius was right in leaving her, or whether he was the cause of all her sorrows. This has been rumor has it on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. Till next time when we spill the tea once more.
