You're listening to State Facts on Radio for Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
I'm your host, Nate Gallagher, and I'm joined by Hillsdale's resident Kentucky
and Braxton Harstein.
How you doing today, Bragg?
I'm doing great.
So where are you from in Kentucky?
I'm from Louisville, Kentucky, the home of Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer,
arguably the greatest athlete in all of sports.
My childhood, I love watching Muhammad Ali highlights.
My dad would always show me his, like,
past matches and just how dominant he was.
And that's just a really cool childhood memory for me.
Is it required by law for you to put as few letters in the word as possible?
It is.
Well, you'll be shamed if you don't.
So if I say Louisville.
You'd be shamed in my city.
They would not like that.
What is the capital of Kentucky?
Fortunately, it's Frankfurt.
Why fortunately?
Well, unfortunately, because it should be Louisville.
And there's literally nothing in Frankfurt.
It's just a bunch of fields.
And then you have the state capital.
And it's out in the middle of nowhere.
And I've literally been there one time.
When was Kentucky admitted to the union?
1792.
What number was it?
Number 15.
Just after the calling.
Nice were added in.
What was in between?
Because it would be 13 and then 14.
Tennessee?
It was Tennessee, wasn't it?
I think so.
I think you're right.
How about the population?
I would say about 5 million.
That might be a little bit too much.
I'm not sure.
4.5.
I'll give it to you.
Okay.
Have it the nickname of the state.
The bluegrass state.
The bluegrass state.
I don't know what bluegrass is,
but bluegrass music, it's pretty good.
A lot of people listen to it in Kentucky,
especially in eastern Kentucky.
Not many people in Louisville,
but just, I guess, that's a common thing to listen to in Kentucky.
It reminds you of horses,
open fields, all that stuff.
How about the state bird?
It's the Cardinal.
For the Louisville Cardinals,
the greatest college in America.
We just beat Clemson this past week.
We have one of the best football programs.
We have definitely one of the best basketball programs.
And hopefully this year we can make some noise, make a tournament run
after two abysmal seasons under Kenny Payne.
But we're coming back.
How about the state horse?
State horse is the thoroughbred.
The Kentucky Derby is a huge thing in Kentucky.
So all the horses in Kentucky Derby are basically from Kentucky, and it's a huge event.
It's two minutes, but it's the greatest two minutes of your life.
There's a lot of parties going on in Kentucky, and it gets super busy, and it's actually in Louisville.
So during that week, so many people come in, so many celebrities, and it's just great to have a derby party every year in May.
How about the state fruit?
Is it strawberry?
Blackberry.
I love blackberries.
Not as good as strawberries, but they are, they are a top five fruit, and I would always eat them on the trails.
When I go hiking with my family, if we see blackberries on the side of the trail,
we'll always go out and pick them and eat them while we're hiking.
Isn't that a little dangerous?
No, it's not dangerous.
At least my mom said it's safe.
I trust what she says.
But I haven't died yet, so I think we're good.
How about this state drink?
Milk.
I haven't drink much milk.
But whenever I went to my grandparents' house,
Oreos and milk are great.
I would dunk them in the milk.
and just that was literally the only time I would have milk
but it was a good memory.
Me and my grandparents eating those for breakfast
and just it was super fun.
Well, I think that's all the time we have today.
Thanks for coming on the show, Brack.
Yep, thank you.
I've been Nate Gallagher with State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
