Starting point is 00:00:04 You're listening to State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. I'm your host, Nate Gallagher, and I'm joined by Hillsdale's resident Marylander, Simon Vitz. How you doing today, Simon? Doing great, Nate. So where are you from in Maryland? I'm from Rockville, Maryland, right around, I guess, 40 minutes north of D.C., pretty chill town, I guess. A lot of malls, a bunch of old houses, which is cool, has a nice town square. right probably where i grew up we've moved since then but our old house where i was for maybe
Starting point is 00:00:41 10 12 years um there was a cool civic center with uh they would have like ballets and stuff musicals all sorts of fancy things um i remember funny like i guess story from the civic center a while ago there were these there were a lot of trees like lining the drive the driveway up and we would always pretend they were castles. So my dad and like the three oldest of us would always like hang out super funny. We would like move from castle to castle, you know. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:13 What is the capital of Maryland? Annapolis. It's a, I don't know, nice spot on the Chesapeake Bay. Yeah, there we go. That's where the Naval Academy is. Not, I guess, kind of typical to a bunch of state capitals in the U.S. It's not like the biggest city by any means in the state.
Starting point is 00:01:36 It has a bunch of like cool old houses and stuff like that. It's almost like a mini Boston kind of. When was Maryland admitted to the union? 1788, I'm pretty sure. April, something. I don't remember. Anyway. What number was it?
Starting point is 00:01:56 It was the seventh. Yeah. How about the population? six million, maybe a little more. I have no idea, though. Baltimore's like about one million. And that's the big city? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:11 How about the state crustacean? This is a fun one. I don't know if any other states have a state crestation, but Maryland has the blue crab, which there are tons of those. Annapolis is a good spot to get blue crabs. A lot of, I don't know if everyone has heard, but old Bay seasoning and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:31 is very, very popular in Maryland and Virginia. Does it come from Chesapeake Bay? Yeah. Yeah. How about the state bird? The Oriole, yeah, which full name is Baltimore Oriole. So I guess that makes sense, right? But let's see.
Starting point is 00:02:51 One of the other reasons might be because the Oriole is the colors of the flag. Yeah, it's like orange. It's like the golden orange and black, so which is cool. How about the state dessert? Smith Island cake. The only reason I know that is because my family loves the Smith Island cake. So I will say it's, um, let's see. So the, it's in April.
Starting point is 00:03:16 So we always celebrate like Maryland Day or something. It's in April and we always have like a Smith Island cake. It's right around one of my sister's birthdays. Is there like a Smith Island that it comes from or is it just? I assume so. I've never been there. But what's in it? It's a lot of chocolate.
Starting point is 00:03:35 It's a chocolate cake. I'm pretty sure seven or nine layers. Or the like legit one is seven to nine thin layers. It's probably like a centimeter thick. And then it has like chocolate between each and like really rich chocolate. How about the state sport? The state sport is jousting, which is pretty epic, I will say. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:03:59 So about that. a while ago, fourth grade. So I guess, what was that, 10 years ago or something? I went to a medieval times in Maryland. It was a pretty epic field trip, I will say. I remember our team was the blue team, and we were the first to lose. But I remember it was super fun. Had a lot of oily chicken and stuff.
Starting point is 00:04:21 But, yeah. How about the state drink? The state drink is milk, which I only found out a little bit ago. But it's pretty funny. I love milk. One of my sisters doesn't. So I'll have to drop that on her next time. She denies having milk.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Like a flex? Yeah. You fake Marylander? Exactly. Superior to you. Well, I think that's all the time we have today. Thanks for coming on the show, Simon. Of course.
Starting point is 00:04:49 I've been Nate Gallagher with State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. See you next.
