Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to State Facts, The Show Where I, State Facts about the U.S. States. Today I'm here with Hillsdale's resident Bostonian, Trevor. How are you today, Trevor? I'm good. How are you, Nate? Good. So where are you from in Massachusetts? I am from a small town called Lexington, Massachusetts. It's about 20 minutes west of Boston. The Lexington?
Starting point is 00:00:19 The Lexington, Massachusetts. Wow. You got a lot of, like, battle stuff out there? Oh, yeah. Yeah, we have the Lexington Battlegreen, where the first shot heard around the world was fired, you know, contrary to popular belief it was actually fired in Lexington and not conquered. Although if you go and go on tours around there, all the tours in Concord will tell you it was fired and conquered, and all the tours in Lexington will tell you was fired in Lexington. A little bit of a rivalry going on there. There is a rivalry. So what is the capital of Massachusetts? Capital of Massachusetts is Boston.
Starting point is 00:00:52 When was Massachusetts admitted to the union? When was Massachusetts? I would have to do a little bit of research on that, but I feel like it was pretty early. February 6th, 1788. That's when you ratified the Constitution. Got it. Do you know what number it was? Like, which state it was admitted? Like, what number it was?
Starting point is 00:01:15 I definitely win this in my A-Push class. Four? Sixth. Sixth? Okay. So pretty close. What is the population of Massachusetts as of 2021? Population of Massachusetts?
Starting point is 00:01:30 I don't know, like 80 million? No, no, no. No, no. 80? No, I have not. Let's say 40 million. Seven million. Hey, we're pretty close.
Starting point is 00:01:42 What are the nickname of the state? Let's see. I don't know about the state, but we do call Boston Bean Town. That's the colloquial nickname for Boston. It's my research said that you guys are either the bay state, the codfish state, or the old colony state. I've heard Bay State a lot, but it's mostly there's a store called Bay State. Maybe it's Ocean State. What's the state bird?
Starting point is 00:02:10 State bird. I don't know. Seagull? No, no, it's like a Robin or something. It's a black-capped chickadee. Okay. Hey, don't feel too bad. Not a lot of people on the show are bird people.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Yeah. That one, usually people are a little bit stumped on. All right. How about the state flower? State flower? I know what it looks like. It's white. I think.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It's a pretty famous ship named with his flower. Pretty famous ship, huh? Like the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria? A little bit later and a little bit more English. Oh, I don't think I know any English ships, Nate. The Mayflower. Oh, the Mayflower. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Okay, okay, facts. Mayflower. Do you know the state's tourism slogan? You'll enjoy it here? Pretty close. It's all here. It's all here, okay. Do you indeed have it all?
Starting point is 00:02:59 Does Massachusetts have it all? I don't know, it's pretty close. For such a small state, I'd say we have a lot. We have ocean to the east. We have a couple mountains to the west. We have city. We've country. Pretty good spread.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Yeah. How about the state fish? I think it's a cod. That's correct. Yeah. How about the state sport? The state sport? We have so many good sports in New England.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I want to guess it's baseball. It's basketball. The state sports basketball? Yeah. That's crazy. I guess the Celtics really have a capital on that, huh? Yeah, how about them Celtics? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:36 How about the state beverage? Oh, geez, okay. State beverage? It's got to be coffee. It's cranberry juice. Cranberry juice is crazy. Do you guys have the cranberry bogs, or is that New Hampshire? I've never seen one.
Starting point is 00:03:50 I always see them in commercials on TV, but I've never actually seen one in person. Never seen one in Massachusetts, that's for sure. How about the state tree? Is it a pine tree? It's an American elm, and I am not a tree guy at all, so an elm might be a pine tree, but I don't think it is. Might be a type of pine tree. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:04:14 I don't know. Never mind. Maybe if I saw a picture of it. Yeah. How about the state song? The state song. Shipping up to Boston by the Dropkick Murphys. It's all hail to Massachusetts.
Starting point is 00:04:27 That's a crit. I've never heard that before. and I've lived in Massachusetts for 19 years. Yeah. How about the state insect? State insect. Geez, a mayfly? That's actually a ladybug.
Starting point is 00:04:39 A ladybug. I was just going off the Mayflower flower. The Mayflower flower. I think the mayflies are from the south. Oh, really? I don't think they're from like the north. Well, thanks for coming on the show, Trevor. Yeah, of course.
