You're listening to State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
I'm your host, Nate Gallagher, and I'm joined by Hillsdale's resident in New Jersey and Adam.
How you doing today, Adam?
I'm doing well, Nate. How about you?
Pretty good. So where are you from in New Jersey?
I am from North Bergen, a town called Emerson, it's near Paramus.
Okay. What is the capital of New Jersey?
It is Trenton, unfortunately, not Newark.
Big fan of Newark?
Well, not particularly, but that's where Liberty International.
airport is located, so you would think as a larger city, that's where the capital should be.
But that's a pretty common case for most states.
Very true. When was New Jersey admitted to the union?
1787?
Correct. Do you actually have like a date, or do you just know the year?
No, just the year.
Okay. New Jersey was the blank state admitted to the union? Like what number?
Fifth?
Close. Third.
Oh, it was sooner.
Okay.
Yeah.
Good that.
How about the population?
Population, not a clue.
See, it's called the Garden State, so a lot of it's like fairly rural, but Bergen County has a number.
I want to say somewhere in the low millions, say five to ten?
Nine million.
So, I mean, you're in the range.
It was in the range.
Funnily enough, the next question is the nickname of the state, which you did say.
The Garden State, yes.
So, which, because I live in Bergen County, a lot of it's more suburban, and obviously you have Newark,
is more of a city, Hoboken.
But most of New Jersey is rural land.
It's big, like, you know, country.
Nice.
How about the state reptile?
Nope.
The bog turtle.
Bog turtle.
Got bogs?
Because I think that's more like a, so that's more of a New England thing.
Well, I mean, there's, there's, we have a fair share of turtles around.
Just a quick story, I'm a golfer. I've been doing it all my life.
So a lot of times when you're out on the course, you'll come across turtles.
I feel like that's a thing for most states anyways, but you'll especially see a lot of them around our area.
So not a bad correlation there.
All right.
How about the state tree?
State tree.
any kind of oak or birch variety?
It is an oak.
It is an oak, okay.
Yes.
The northern red oak, to be specific.
It's a northern red oak, okay.
Not much of a tree guy.
No, not much into botany,
not much of an arborist.
Fair enough.
How about the state animal?
Animal, oh boy.
Which is different than the state reptile.
And different than the state bird.
Yes.
I guess you're asking state mammal,
but not a clue.
The horse.
You know horse ride?
For New Jersey?
Yeah, it's all horse.
That's strange.
Well, actually, maybe not, so, because it is the garden state.
No, I've not, I've ridden a horse before, but I'm not a horse rider.
In New Jersey, or, like, were you in a vacation?
No, in New Jersey, so.
All right.
How about the state fruit?
Orange.
The high bush blueberry.
A blueberry, okay.
I like blueberries.
Blueberries are nice, yeah.
It's unfortunate sometimes when you get the sour ones,
but I've had some really good ones that taste almost like cotton candy,
kind of like grapes.
New Jersey grown?
No clue if they were New Jersey grown or not.
I got them in New Jersey, but...
I mean, that counts for something.
It does.
How about the state juice?
State juice.
I didn't even know that these were...
Are these all like a...
It's real.
Wow.
This has all been real.
No, state juice, no clue.
Cran.
juice. It's cranberry. Okay, so at least
we get something Thanksgiving. I feel
like that's related to the bog turtle because
cranberries, they grew in a bog
which I also thought both of those things were more of a New England
thing because New Jersey is like a middle
state more so. Yeah, it's a
very like, it's a very
middle state in terms of like
climate, I would even say culture,
a geological location.
It's very average.
I might be called it a
melting pot. You don't have to go average. You can say it's a melting pot. All right, sure.
Melting pot. Well, I think that's all the time that we have today. Thank you for coming on the show,
Adam. Thank you for having me, Nate. I've been Nate Gallagher with State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale
101.7 FM. See you next time.
