You're listening to State Facts on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
I'm your host, Nate Gallagher.
And today is a very, very special episode
because I will be the resident New Yorker.
Interviewing me is Nicole Siggyartow.
How are you doing Nicole?
I'm good.
It's fun to be on the opposite end of this.
Thank you so much for doing this.
Yeah, of course.
Where are you from in New York?
I am from Farmingdale, New York.
a small town about 40 minutes out from the city
it's a little boring but I do find it interesting
that I went from living in a town called Farmingdale
I went to high school in Uniondale
and now I'd go to college at Hillsdale
I just I love Dales I love Hills
You need to keep that going in the future
Like anywhere you move has to end in a Dale
What is the capital of New York?
Albany
Very good
Yeah Albany
It's the second other city pretty much in New York.
New York, everyone always is like the city, New York City.
And that's pretty true.
I mean, upstate is beautiful, has a lot of great things in it.
But in terms of people, you have about three areas.
You have Albany the Capitol, Rochester and Buffalo.
And other than that, you have nobody.
When was New York admitted to the Union?
1789.
Do you want to throw in a month and a day as well?
I believe it was, it's in July.
Yeah.
July 22nd?
It is July 26th, 1788.
So close.
So close.
New York was the blank state admitted to the union.
So what number?
11th.
Very good.
I do know that one.
Nice.
What is the population?
of New York.
19 million people.
And that says of 20, 23.
Yeah.
So, okay.
Great.
What is the nickname of the state?
The nickname is the empire state.
The reason it is the empire state is because we are the, like, daughter of the British
empire.
Really?
That's what I was always told.
Also, it's super cool.
I, for some reason, always.
just attributed the Empire State to the Empire State building.
Why do you think it was called the Empire State Building?
Well, now that you mention it, I pieced it together, but before, for some reason,
I thought the building came before the nickname.
No.
It's like what came first?
The chicken or the egg?
Yeah.
The Empire State filling of the Empire State?
Yeah.
Well, the Empire State came first, yeah.
Okay, good to know.
What is the state fish?
The brook trout?
You are correct.
Yeah, I've done a lot of fishing.
So, because I live on an island.
So I can go either fish up in the Long Island sound, which is technically ocean, but it's a sound.
So it's sort of calmer waves.
There's not too much going on.
Or I could go and down to the Atlantic Ocean.
I've gone to fishing in the Atlantic Ocean a couple times.
It is insane.
The waves were flipping the boat to on.
Almost 90 degrees.
So you almost capsized?
Almost.
Apparently, the older guys on the boat were all telling me that it was fine, but I was like freaking out.
You know what?
Sailors will say that.
But be like you're fine.
I was like 12, so I was freaking out.
But apparently I was fine.
I caught a pretty big fish.
I don't remember how big it was, but I caught a pretty big fish.
Have you ever caught a brook trout before?
I don't think so.
I think the brook trout itself might be more of an upstate thing.
Okay.
I see.
What is the state drink?
Milk.
I wonder why that is.
Because it's the best drink.
Milk is so good.
Milk is the superior option.
Milk, if you could have any drink ever, the answer is always milk.
It heals your tongue from being burned.
That's true.
It strengthens your bones.
It comes from cows and goats and sheep.
And oat and almonds.
I mean, look at, I mean, there's, it's just the superior option.
And coconuts.
And because we're a superior state, we wouldn't deign to have anything else.
No, no.
The only option is milk for New York.
Well, I think that's all the time we have today.
Thanks so much for interviewing me, Nicole.
Of course, this was so fun.
I've been at Gallagher on State Facts with Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
See you next time.
