Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the old ball game, where we talk about the past of America's favorite pastime. I'm Tate Christensen. Today we talk about the origin of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers were founded in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, by real estate tycoon and baseball fanatic Charles Byrne. They were originally named the Brooklyn Grays and played in a minor league. They were invited to become a member of the American Association in 1884, which they did under the name the Brooklyn Athletics. In 1890, they joined the National League, changing their name back to the World League. Brooklyn Grays. In 1895, people began calling them the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, which was a reference
Starting point is 00:00:36 to the New York pedestrians who often had to move quickly to avoid the newly implemented electric trolleys. The name stuck around, and they were known as the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1957 when the club moved to Los Angeles, where they remained today under the same name, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
