This week we discuss the tumultuous rise, fall, rise, fall, and so forth of the relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Tune in to hear how Justin's wife, Hailey, plays into all this, which songs each artist wrote about the other, and, for some reason, a little insight into how Garrett's senior prom went. 

This is the social mediators on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM where we examine the truth disparity between what's on social media and what's actually true. I'm Julian Parks. And I'm Garrett Gouldsby. And today our little tagline is not fully true. We're doing a little bit of a reversal here just because truly and honestly social media is the expert when it comes to Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's relationship. In fact, social media is the thing that has cataloged the change. All of my sources were compilation TikTok videos of things from Instagram, from Twitter, from photos that they posted together on any social media app. So it's, social media is the expert here and they are the reasons that we know anything. It's true. So I will say, I just want to put out a disclaimer that this is going to be more of a crash course style video than like a comparing contrast style video in a way.

Because all the information is on social media. There aren't literally hours and hours and hours of like 14 part series is on this sort of thing there's extensive information about haley beber about selina gomez about jason beber if you were to search forever in your whole life i'm 100% sure you could find all of the information you could ever need more information than you could ever think possible so everything i found cited social media yeah there was no like our reporter went and found this out like nothing like that every article every magazine that i read was all about social media. Because this is all played out.

Well, and these are kids. These are kids. This is what they're using in social media. They are children. So I'm going to take us through a kind of a very, very condensed timeline. I'm going to tell you some of the songs that were written about each other, some of their classic favorites that we all watched unfold in real time as being related to one another. I'm going to give you a little, a few pieces about the Haley Bieber drama.

And if we want to dive into that in a different episode, we can. But Haley Bieber is actually her own. her own menace in this situation. So they actually met in early 2009 when I was seven years old. And they were also like basically seven. They were like 14. I think they were like 14 years old. They were kids.

Justin Bieber was born in 1994. I don't know. I think he puts them at 16. Selena, I think is two years older, so that's 18. They're kids. Tiny. They're little. So they were introduced by their managers and there was an interview where 15 year old, I think he was 15 in 2009

because it says 15 year old Justin Bieber says he had a crush on Selena Gomez. He said it on a radio interview, which is when things started to blossom a little bit. They were spotted together in 2010 for the very first time. 2011, they were seen together. And then they started dating officially. Well, they confirmed their relationship for the public in 2011

when they went to the Vanity Fair Oscar party together. It's a very iconic outfit. He's wearing a red, no, a black suit with like a little red, what's that called? A pocket square? A pocket square. And then she's running a red, dress. A handkerchief. Which is funny. And they, for, to put it kind of, uh, in a really condensed

sense, they were super on and off for many years after that. I think they broke up for the first time in 2012. Yeah, in 2012, they broke up for their busy schedules, but they were both clearly really heartbroken about it. Justin Bieber started, I mean, he got older, so that also kind of is a mitigating factor, but he started getting more into drugs. He kind of started citing more depression. There's a lot of outside factors. He was a kid who grew up in the media. He's surrounded by the influences. But from then on, 2014, 2013, there are so many videos and pictures of them back together and then not on together, back together and then not together, back together, and then not together. And all of this is just being posted on Instagram. So people who were really

big fans of both of them were just kind of along for the ride. Haley Baldwin, now Haley Bieber, is very much understood to be somebody who is watching all this unfold. She has lots of tweets about how she was teen Jolina and how they were like the teenage dream couple. But she always was a fan of Justin Bieber and the idea is that she stalked him like a lot before they ever actually got married. And there's a ton of evidence, a ton of evidence of her like conspiring with fan accounts and being like, do you know where Justin Bieber is right now?

And they're like, he's here and she flies to go be there in that hotel. tell in an attempt to try and see him. So there's crazy stuff like that. There's a lot of similarities between things that Selena Gomez would do and then Haley Beaver would do later. But again, kind of a different episode. In 2014, Justin officially unfollowed Selena Gomez on Instagram and then things started getting

kind of serious with him and Haley. They just started being seen together a lot more. And I think they officially dated, but I don't actually really know when they officially started dating because every time you think they're officially dating, Justin and Selena are spotted having dinner together. They're spotted going to a concert together. They're spotted in a car together, at a coffee shop together.

That sort of thing really does characterize a lot of the drama that we're seeing. And they kind of are talking about each other a lot too, about this really tumultuous relationship. In 20, oh, I think it was 2015. She released a song called The Heart Wants What It Wants. Do you remember this song at all? Do you remember when it came out? Yeah, I wasn't exactly what you would call a close follower of, Selena Gomez at what I would have been 13, 12.

Okay. Well, it was actually 2014. I was wrong. So when all this stuff is kind of going down, they're starting to break up, it's called The Heart Wants What It Wants. There is definitely, if you have any information on this, I'd love to hear about it. I kind of saw it in comments and stuff, but I wasn't able to find the timeline of when they both went to rehab or they check themselves into mental institutions.

Like, there are claims that when Selena posted that she was getting engaged to Benny Blanco, her current fiance, Justin checked himself into a mental institution and that when Justin announced he was going to marry or married or wasn't getting engaged to Haley Bieber that Selene did the same thing. But I couldn't find that in any of the timelines. So I'd be curious if you could find that, but we will come back to that. One thing that I think is so interesting is Justin Bieber and, well, now Haley Bieber, once Haley Baldwin, got married. Do you know what year they got married per chance? They got married in 2018. Okay. So in six months before he got married to Haley Baldwin.

He was not six months, six weeks, six weeks. He was spotted with Selena Gomez because her dad was getting married. And so I guess Justin was probably her plus one. And they were seen in Jamaica together for, I would assume, a week or a weekend. And they look very happy in all the paparazzi photos that were stalking them. But it's like one of those things where you're like, he's literally getting married to a new girl. And he's spending six weeks prior. He's with Selena Gomez, which is like why people are so,

tied to this idea that Justin and Selena are meant to be because they kind of mirrored that same sort of thing. So I would say that's as much of the timeline as I'm probably going to go into. There's a lot more of the logistics of when they were together at this cafe and this dinner and there is photo evidence for all of it, which is so funny because people really were. There were full-time jobs that were people meant to just stock down. I do have a question about this whole this unfolding. And if social media covered this, um, Selena Gomez. as physical issues or health issues. That has very much been covered.

She has lupus. She had to get a kidney transplant at some point. And she's talked a lot about how that affected her mental health. There's a documentary about it. And there, I don't know about the interactions between the two of them post-diagnosis, though. I think part of it seemed like she was, after she was diagnosed, there wasn't as much citing of them together or following each other on Instagram. like that kind of was an era post i feel like but i don't actually know the the actual date one thing i will say

before i pass it over to you and we talk a little bit about maybe some questions you have or uh things that you found that you want to check in on oh two things first is i'm just going to give you a list of songs that were written about selina um by justin he wrote confident about her he wrote sorry where are you now he wrote mark my words he wrote um those are the ones those are the ones that that he admitted to writing about her. I'm sure there's more. And then she wrote, Lose You to Love Me, which is classic.

Heart wants what it wants. Back to you is a classic. I think she wrote Same Old Love, but it's just on this list. I actually haven't heard Same Old Love Ever in my whole life. But there are all these songs about like, it's always going to be you.

Oh, there's another song. Oh, Flatline. Flatline is about Selena and that's a song that's like, whoa, he's very clearly still in love with her. And he performs that song still. And when he performs it, somebody films it. And they're like, he's singing about Selena right now.

It's, it's very much still, at least mentally intertwined. Selena seems to be a little bit more past it. Except she just released an album with songs that she wrote with her current fiancee. And people are like, no, the songs are about her fiance's ex-girlfriend. The songs are about his fiance's ex-girlfriend. But the song seems so pointed at Haley Bieber. Like there's one that's called, I think, don't take it personally or something. That's like, some things are just meant to be.

And it's, and it gives me and Justin her soulmates sort of. not that she reciprocates it, but that he's always going to love her and that she should just kind of give up in a sense. It's kind of a mean girl's song. There was a, there also were a lot of cheating rumors, as you probably could,

have suspected. Apparently just had cheated on her a fair bit, and she apparently cheated on him as well with a man named Zane. I'm assuming Zane from one direction, but it could be a different Zane. I'm not really sure. There are lots of Zanes in the world.

There are lots of Zanes. But that kind of characterizes their relationship. And then the last thing I'll say is that there is kind of this funny impulse in Haley Bieber to just kind of copy people. She has kind of a chameleian equality to her. And so one of the, I wouldn't say conspiracy theories, but just regular fan theories, is that when Justin was really going through turmoil, when he was experiencing the like lowest lows of his mental health and really experimenting with drugs, etc., etc.,

he did turn to the church. and he began to get really into his faith more so. And the theory is that Haley Bieber kind of swooped in and fanned this or feigned this sort of also Christianness to try and kind of win him over and to solidify his like safe coping mechanism as something that he could identify with her, which I think is kind of valid because once she posted this post that I remember on Instagram that was like, this is why we don't celebrate Halloween. And it very much gave like performative Christian in my opinion of like demons are out there. And there are people that are that don't celebrate Halloween. They have legitimate religious reasons for it. And I guess that's fine. We could talk about that in a different episode.

But it just gave very much like, yeah, guys, we're Christians now. So we don't do this anymore. It didn't, it didn't read genuine at all. I would have to read it to give you the idea of what it actually said. But people were really suspicious about it. And she deleted it very quickly after it was posted. So it clearly wasn't like a something that was really on her heart. It was probably more of a performative action on her part.

I think that's most of what I want to draw out. It's a really interesting relationship that I could have gone into in a crazy, more depth. But I want to see kind of what you found. Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber. Selina Gomez. They've been famous since they were very small. Yes. Unbelievably small, actually. Barney Age for Selena, right? Yes.

So December 2010. is the date I found for their first date. They were seen at IHOP. IHOP. Justin Bieber was 16. Gomez was 18. And previous to that, prior to this time,

there are some comments that sounds like Selena has made about viewing Justin Bieber as kind of like a little brother. Which, yeah, it's kind of an interesting dynamic just shows you how big an age gap two years is when you're that young.

Did you see that Ellen Show interview where she says that? She's like, he's a little brother to me. I would never date him. Yes. Awkward. Classic.

And I also. found, I couldn't exactly pinpoint the exact day when this happened, but it seemed like it was, my impression was that Beaver was only 18, so this is a few years later, that they move in together for a short period of time. And they, in Salina's words, engaged in a type of marriage thing, I think were the exact words she used. And it didn't go super well. There's this funny, I think it's funny as somebody who's about to get married. This just Justin Bieber quote where he was like, I was young and like living with a woman. And it was just kind of like, Dot, dot, dot, like, yeah, okay, actually, it's kind of complicated.

There you go, yeah. So I got a kick out of that. So I'll step through some more aspects of the timeline and draw out some other interesting things that I found that I didn't hear you mention, and I'm curious if you maybe saw it and just didn't bring it up. So you mentioned them coming out at the Oscars party as dating. That was kind of their debut. They split, like, the next, a few months later, this is November 2012. I'm told that, I'm told by the news, that part, some of their dating relationships, Consisted in like helicopter rides together. There was a rumor that Selena was pregnant for a while. Oh, that's a big theory. That's a big theory that that that was part of the dissolution of their relationship was that she had a miscarriage of some sort, which if true very sad, but that is a major fan theory that people do bring up a lot. Yes. Couldn't find any evidence whether or not that was true. But what I did find is that one of the dates that they had and again, this is a very a very young person. I think 18, 19, you know, maybe early 20.

he rented out the Staples Center. Did not see that. So that they could watch a movie together. Oh. Which is, I think it was the Staples Center, but a whole stadium. Wow. Yeah, so that they, as a like romantic date. Because he has one billion dollars.

He has lots of dollars. Speaking of, we'll get into things that he's done with his dollars in a minute because I found some, so when researching his addiction and rehab story, I found some great, rather comical instances of the overuse of, uh, of finance by a very young man. So you said they split in 2012. What I found was that they split in 2013. Were there two different splits or was my date just?

Oh, probably. Probably is probably true. Probably. There was, I read a lot of different timelines and they would pin different splits happening at different times. Yeah, I bet there were a bunch. There were so many coming back together and splitting up against.

And sometimes the splits were less dramatic, it seems like than other times. Like it was more like we're taking a pause. We're not spending as much time together. Less e-news. Instagram story post. That's right. So then 2013 we get Selena Gomez releasing a song about Justin Bieber.

I forget the name of the song. Do you know what it's called? But then later that year, Bieber says in an interview that they're not talking at all, but that he still loves her. This is like a pretty consistent theme, almost basically up until the point where he gets married to another woman. Is like, I still love Selena. You know? And so that's a little perplexing to me.

here's the thing that I've been waiting to come to that I'm just like I really hope like in my mind I want there to be like a drone video of this moment and I know there's probably not because I read it was just like shut up that's from a movie allegedly okay he was Justin Bieber was in Spain yes he's on a vacation in Spain and he got in a fight with Orlando Bloom like a fist fight and he lost probably I mean I mean I I don't know. I'm not sure. He's this legolus, right? Like, how is he going to beat the guy? I don't know. I don't know. I just thought that was so funny because I was like, these are like the archetypes for a pretty boy actor. And they're, it's like the world can't exist when they're in the same space. They are, they're foils. Like they're the same. You know? And they get put in the same space and they're just like, well, we have to fight. It's like showing up to prom and your best friends wearing the same dress as you. You can't abide by that. Does that happen to you when you went to prom? No, but I actually watched it. I've been to several of my friends and it got ugly. Yeah, it does. So I'm glad I never had to experience that. But yeah, I was really hoping. So did social media bring that up? Did you see any of that?

I mean, does Selena have anything to do with that? Well, only vaguely because they think that the fight was started over Selena in some way. Come on. No, I didn't see that. But I'm sure if I looked up Orlando Bloom, Justin Bieber fight, first video come up is going to be like a 15-minute documentary about this situation. Let me know if you can find that drone footage because I really would. I'll send it to you if I know it doesn't exist, but I just really would like to see Justin Bieber fight Orlando Bloom on a beach in Spain.

All right. That's a dream that I have, actually. Okay. So that's 2014. Haley Baldwin shows up in 2014, kind of for the first time in his life. But she was there the whole time. I need you to understand she was there the whole time. Okay.

I believe you. In this instance, I'm fully confident of the fact that I do not have the best information. I could send you so many docu-series. Oh, dear. But only in like 30 second chunks. I find also that 2015 is called The Lost in Jolina year. What does that mean?

I don't know. I just found that phrase a lot of times. What? Yeah. Apparently the year ends with this video of Justin Bieber like serenading Selena Gomez. Okay, I have seen that video. In a hotel somewhere.

I think he sings my girl. I'm pretty sure that's the song that he was singing unless he serenated her multiple times. He actually serenaded Haley Bieber at their wedding because it's a point of contention for Haley Bieber. Okay. So lots of serenading happening. Is a man that serenades?

It makes sense, though. Yeah, it does make sense. So August 2016, this part is a little bit confusing to me. His fans get really mad at him for posting a picture with... Sophia Ritchie. Yeah, with Sophia Ritchie, who he dated for, I think, six weeks is what I found. Makes sense. And Selena, like, he gets all upset, you know, and then...

Oh, I've seen this. Stop posting if you can't take the heat. Like your fans love you and they've been there since day one. Exactly. Just deal with it. They all start accusing each other of cheating and Suna actually I think apologizes in some form a way. So I guess that's kind of good.

Again, we have this series of they're together. They're not together. We see them in this public place. Oh, they just kissed at like a sporting event. That was on TV more than the game was. It was a hockey game. It was a hockey game. They hit pause.

I got this line and I was like, ooh, I have to know more. This was March 28. which is the same year that he marries Haley Bieber, okay? Just for context, this is like four or five months before. They are together and they hit pause and I quote,

to focus on their spirituality, which is very interesting. And now it comes to the point where we need to talk about Justin Bieber's spirituality. Fair enough. Because it plays into his whole addiction timeline. I found some very interesting things.

Oh yeah. Did you find the rehab stuff? Well, he actually never went to a formal rehab program. Did he go to a mental institution? He went to Carl Lentz's house. What's that? Carl Lentz is a famous preacher. He's like a celebrity pastor.

Oh, okay. And he, Justin Bieber, moved in with Carl Lentz. What? Carl Lentz, just picture, like, hip pastor guy. His glasses are probably fake. You know, you have the image. I do. I just didn't know that that counted as a mental institution.

Not exactly. Come on. So it sounded like he worked with various doctors in that time, but he wasn't in formal rehab. Okay. Some of the things that he was trying to get his act together about, he was arrested for drag racing his Lamborghini in Miami, which I just think is super funny.

I don't know why. It's probably cool guy in a sort of way. And then this one, this was my favorite one. He bought a pet monkey and it was seized in customs in Germany, which means that he tried to take it to somewhere. Like he tried to travel with his pet monkey. That's awesome. This wasn't just a home monkey.

This is an everywhere This is an everywhere monkey Yeah I would do the same thing So maybe the monkey Like maybe we should unpack that more

In a future Well maybe we shouldn't But perhaps The monkey has been there All along Just like Haley Bieber It's a really dumb observation Well I'm here to make it

Okay And yeah So then in September Justin Bieber Bauer marries Haley Baldwin For those of you that don't know She's this model lady

I have no idea How famous she is Her dad is Alec Baldwin Oh excellent So really famous I didn't know that My grandma hated Alec Baldwin.

I think a lot of people hate Alec Baldwin. But it was one of you, she had a unique ire for him. Yeah. The name always was accompanied by a visceral disgust, which I just thought was so funny.

Awesome. And then yeah, October 2020, we get this photo of Selena and Haley looking like buddies. And I think it seems like they're really trying to do publicly a lot of that,

seeming like friends, but I don't know if I buy it. Do you buy it? Yes. Okay, well, that's good, I guess. Oh, you don't buy. I was about to say,

no way. No, I don't. I don't, but it's okay. Turns out I'm a liar and Alec Baldwin is not her dad. I was about to say, I think she's not, I don't know if she's, she, she, Baldwin's niece, uncle, uncle. Alec Baldwin is her and Stephen Baldwin, who I guess is famous as well, is her dad, but I have no idea who Stephen Baldwin is.

Her uncle. Excellent. Now we know. Excellent. Sorry for the misinformation. I lied. She is not of color. She's just really tan.

I saw some pictures like, well, it doesn't make any. sense that she would be related to Alec Baldwin because I think of him as being kind of a pale guy. Yeah, he is a pale guy, but you just saw her in her tan form. Yeah. Oh my gosh. We're spreading misinformation. We are. We are. There's worse things we could do. Luckily, we don't need to grade it. I think we already, yeah. I think we get it. I think we get it. A and, and they will forever have the A. I think we don't get an A in 22 minutes. Impossible. We can't.
