Welcome to the World Outside on Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, where we explore fascinating events and culture in foreign countries.
Turn in your Atlas to Switzerland and Europe.
Just like here in the U.S., the Swiss town of Richter's Will loves to carve jacko-lanterns every fall.
But there's a twist.
They carve not pumpkins, but radishes.
The tradition comes from the mid-1800s,
when local wives reportedly carved turnips as lanterns to light the way home from evening church.
Today, every second Saturday in November, Richter's Will celebrates the Turnip Festival,
or locals parade their carvings around town to celebrate the harvest.
That's all for now. I'm Jonathan Taylor on The World Outside for Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM.
Keep exploring God's fascinating world.
