Women's Basketball: Hillsdale vs. Cedarville, 02/15/24Evan Mick and Gabriel Vondrak on the call for WRFH

Yeah, Lauren McDonald looks to beat the press because Cedarville already pressing very early in this game and a nice little zone press, kind of a diamond-type formation. As Hill still beats it pretty easily. Lauren McDonald takes it all the way of the basket, jumps it off to Ashley Conkel, who unfortunately misses the layup, but Lauren McDonald grabs the rebound, kicks it out to Sidney Panassik, up to McCormick, who takes a drive, dribbles and unfortunately misses the layup. Heavily contested there, some pretty good defense.

It was a good move, but unfortunately she did not finish the shot. Cityville on the other end. Passing the ball up. She's Cat, Cat Weekly. Weekly. Out's a butterball. DeVille really trying to move that ball around. Yeah, a lot of movement.

Out to Kyle who gets, is that ball tipped there? I'm not sure, but he was an air ball as it traveled towards the rim. It's out of the other side. There's going to be a travel. Hold on, Kenham McCormick. She took an extra step trying to get that jump set, but didn't quite get her feet set. Unfortunately. Yeah, just a little bit out of control there. Cedarville.

Two early travels for the Chargers here. Back-to-back travels on Hillsdale. Don't see that every day. No, something that they're going to want to get rid of. You don't want to be turning that ball over freely. I mean, if Cedarville's going to make a great play, they're going to get some steals, but you can't just be turning it over on your own end. getting the ball in the hands of McCormick down to Panassick Panasic with a little fade away from the block and she makes it Hillsdale is now four to three with seven minutes left to go in this first quarter. Great awareness there by Panasic to find a soft spot in Cedarville's zone and take advantage of it. Yeah, Cedarville. Going to come down and take an early shot. Rebounds going to go to Panasic. Panosic, now with the ball on the offensive end, kicking it out to Sidney Mills,

who passes it under Ashley Conchle. Great pass and great wide open layup right there. It was a great find by Sidney Mills to have an easy basket for Ashley Conkle. Yeah, Hillsdale's offense dominating the pain so far in this one. And they definitely do have the size advantage here. As number zero, Breonna Zaycheck is going to take it in pretty easily. Score on the chargers, making it six to five. Hillsdale lead.

Hillsdale breaks Cedarville's press super easily. Pass up to Lauren McDonald. Lorne McDonnell for three, and she's going to sink the shot. Excellent shot from McDonald. In rhythm, no hesitation. Yep, calm, cool, confident. This ball is going to go up. Missed shot by number zero.

Rihanna's A-check Seychickel. Cedarville's slow to get back on defense here. Yep. Citi Mills. Sorry, Cini Panasic with the ball. Out to Lauren McDonald's going to take a drive. And they're going to call a charge on her.

Offensive foul on Lauren McDonald. Oh, wow. I thought they were going to call a blocking foul there. I think she's just as surprised as we are. Unfortunate for them, though, because she made the shot, too. So that would have been a possible three-point play for McDonald, who is a great free throw shooter. So some great defense there by number 22.

Casey Kyle to draw the charge. Conchle, McDonald, and Mills sit down for the chargers. Yeah, he'll still going to get some subs in, including Caitlin, the big three-point shooter. Cedarville going right after Splane. Trying to take advantage of her in the post. It doesn't work. Splane with the rebound there.

Hillsdale with the ball and the lead is Kailen Splain shoot the three-pointer, but she's unfortunately going to airball and it's going to go along and roll out of bounds. So before Cedarville, taking up the ball is Butterball, who just drew her first foul, which is why Hillsdale was inbounding the ball

and caused the immediate timeout. And then pass back to Butterball. Pass down number 44 in the block with some great help defense by McCormick. Cedarville rebound back out to Butterball. He's going to shoot the three and miss. Rebound Panace. Two really good looks for Cedarville there on offense. The pick and roll worked.

They got a decent look out of that. Then the offensive rebound, but unable to hit the shot. Yeah, Neely was wide open under the basket, but Kendall McCormick came into place some great help defense and made the shot a little bit more difficult. Unfortunately, he'll still keep away from those offensive rebounds and those easy looks under the basket. As McCormick is going to drive and draw the foul on number zero,

Rihanna's agent. Yeah, good strong drive there from McCormick. gets to the line. Let's see if she can capitalize. Yeah, Hillstall currently leads nine to five with four minutes left to go in this first quarter. One thing to keep a look at is... So when women's basketball, the fouls reset every quarter. So it's five fouls and then you're automatically in the double bonus. There is no single bonus.

But one thing to keep a eye on already is that Cedarville already has four fouls. So first of all, number zero, who is a starter for them, Brianna Zaycheck, already has two fouls, which not to say, you know, you're not worried yet. about two fouls but you're starting to get it's one foul away from yeah you're starting to be a concern especially in the game in the first quarter yeah yeah and already having four fouls the next time they foul hillsdale as long as it's not an offensive foul they will be shooting two shots as both the free throws are missed but offensive rebound goes to hillsdale hillsdale able to kick it out go all the way around the arc past track to city mills and she's going to draw foul so now hillsdale going to be shooting two free

So that's what we were talking about right there. That was a crazy sequence for Mills right there. Gets the offensive rebound off of the free throw, throws up a shot, and I think it may have bounced off of the underneath the underside of the rim. Then the ball started flying around for the chargers. Yeah, everybody just, I don't want the ball, I don't want the ball, I don't want the ball. I just pass it all the way around, and Mills is able to draw a foul off a drive. It looked a little chaotic there for a second.

Yeah, she's going to make the first free throw, so. three minutes and 43 seconds left in this first quarter Hillsdale up 10 to 5 now 11 to 5 as Sydney Mills makes the second free point Number one Peyton Adkins is checked in for the charges sophomore guard Yes ball's going to go to butterball

Luma's going to take a little dribble around. Find McDonald's under the basket. McDonald's going to make a great move and do a reverse layup. Great move. I think she may have gotten away with a travel there. It looked like almost like she took too many steps, but did it quick enough that nobody saw. Nice finish by McDonald.

Yeah, that's one of those ones where it's hard. You don't know if you want to call it or not. It's Neely for. for the Cedarville Yellow Jackets, sinks a three-pointer. Scores currently 13 to 8. Hillsdale leads with 2 minutes and 43 seconds left in the first quarter.

The ball's going to go to Peyton Adkins. She's going to pass it down to Lorne McDonald under the paint. And McDonald with another basket. Great movement so far from McDonald. A little two-player game there between her and Atkins. Got a good look right under the basket. That's back-to-back possessions where they've given the ball to McDonald under the basket.

Yep, just letting her work. Passes out to Butterball for Cedarville. Driving on Adkins has to kick it out. Shot, three-point shots. By number 22 is missed. It's Casey Kyle. On the other end, Cindy Mills with the ball, with a little move and a great shot.

Great move by Sidney Mills there. Stops, lets the defense fly by, hits the turnaround jump shot right into the basket. Yeah, a nice little pivot, like a four-foot shot. Great move by heart. Great touch. That's a harder shot than it looks.

Yeah. Now on Cedarville's end, number 44 with the ball. It's Evan Neely. Neely, with the missed shot, Mills with the rebound. Passed up to McDonald, who's taking some speed, but now deciding to slow this down and get the offense set up. I say the Chargers wasting no time in transition,

really getting the ball down the court fast. As Cedarville is going to get a steel, butterball, on the transition. Great defense. still by the chargers, but Savannah Smith draws a foul. Yeah, Smith will be called for a foul. I think she bailed Butterbaugh out there. Butterbaugh seemed to be trying to move that was a little bit outside.

I don't think she did what the basket was. There was no way she was going to make that shot. No, but I mean, Smith saw the right thing. The ball was out there, and she definitely could have got the block, just missed it. But I agree with you. I don't think that Butterbaugh really had much of a shot at making that one. No, she was out of control driving in and then sort of spun and threw up a layup. Worked out well for her, though, as she makes the first free throw.

Yeah, she's also going to make the second free throw, making it 17 to 10. Hillsdale Chargers with a minute and 21 seconds left in the first quarter of play. Ball up to Panasic after they break to Cedarville press. Laura McDonald with a drive-in but it tipped Cedarville ball in the past. Out to Panosick and the three-pointer and Panasic is going to miss short. Almost a great play by McDonald there. Pass was just batted away at the last second. She had Conkle wide open into the basket.

Good defense by the Yellowjackus to prevent it. Yeah, she had the two-on-one right there. Just great defense to get a tip pass in there. I see the real. I was going to give the ball up to number 34. Cat Weekly. Weekly. Passing it out to Butterball.

She was really not had much room inside the... It's just going to be a foul on Sidney Mills. They missed a kickball violation. The ball bounced off of Adkins' shoe. They called a foul on Mills. Yellow Jackets retained possession here. Yeah, embounding the ball. Kick out to Butterball.

Oh, but a basketball game, apparently a big game. The big game. The big game. 19 to 12 right now in Hillsdale's favor going into the second quarter. And I think Hillsdale has the, no, Cedarville is going to have possession going into the second quarter. McDonald's is off. Off to a great start for the Chargers. Let's see if she can keep that impact up.

She is. I'm going to get the ball down to Zaycheck. Zaycheck to Hale. Hale with the layup underneath the basket. Great drive there by Hale. Cedarville is going to get up set up in this press. Once again, which really has not worked in the first half. Giving him a little bit of trouble here.

A little bit of trouble here, but they break it then. Passing it down to Sydney Mills. Ball back up to Lauren McDonald's. 17 seconds left, still on the shot clock. for Hillsdale. Out to McCormick. McCormick has to pick up her dribble nine seconds left on the shot clock right now. As Conkel is going to draw a foul. So they get the ball down to Conkel and trying to intercept the pass.

Number 10 just gets her on. Cedarville being extremely aggressive on defense. A lot of pressure on anybody who had the ball for the Chargers. Yeah, and they don't really have anybody with the size to cover Conkla. I mean, number 10 is their starting point guard. And she's up there guarding the 6-2. Yes, Conkall. As she gets the ball on the top and finds Sydney Mills underneath the basket,

but Mills misses the layup. Offensive rebound, Hillsdale, to Sydney Panasic. And Panasic's also going to miss, and then out of bounds, apparently, trying to grab the rebound of Sidney Mills. Unfortunate miss for Mills there, very uncharacteristic of her. Yeah, she's upset with herself after that one. I would like to have it back for sure. Yeah, it was a great pass there by Concold to get the layup set up there.

As Butterball is going to get the ball. Pass it out. Long three-pointer. She thought about that one for a long time. She said, am I taking this? Oh, yeah. Yeah, so she ends up taking the three-pointer and misses very short. Ball up to Sidney Panasic now on the offensive end.

She's going to lose the dribble. Pass up to Cedarville. Cedarville's going to overrun the basket. Steel Hillsdale. Somebody used to slow it down here. Get this basketball under control. Yeah. Back-to-back turnover.

by each team. Cat Weekly, unfortunately, loses her dribble and, you know, effort to save it out of bounds, throws it right back to a Hillsdale player. As Panazis is going to drive in and miss the layup, but Mills on the rebound is going to get fouled, so it's going to maintain Hillsdale possession. You mentioned the fouls resetting every quarter in women's basketball. That's good for Zeterville because they'd have a lot of fouls right now. It doesn't seem like they're going to waste much time getting to five fouls here in the second quarter. but we just talked about it last quarter.

Brianna Zaycheck now with three fouls and she's going to have to be checked out of the game. It's a big loss. Big loss for them this early. Yeah, a little bit of foul trouble with eight minutes and 24 seconds left in the second quarter. Sohsdale currently leads 19 to 14. McDonald's with a three-pointer and she's going to hit it.

Great shot there by McDonald. Yep. Nice setup. As soon as she caught the ball, the ball's out of her hand. Yep. Second three-pointer of the game by McDonald. Hillstone currently leads 22 to 14 with eight minutes left to go in the second quarter

kicked out to Butterball for Cedarville Cedarville was going to miss the three-pointer McDonnell's going to grab the rebound. Try to take it coast to coast but she decides not to maybe wisely and then going to pass to Panasic and now Panasic draws a foul. Yep, another foul on Hale

for the yellow jackets. Yeah, that's her second, team third of the quarter, which remember, they only have to get to five in order to get to that double bonus. Like I said earlier, the Yellow Jack, it's being really physical on defense to anybody who possesses the ball. Yeah, a little bit of grab it in there all the time. Trying not to give him any space. As Splein is going to check back in for the chargers.

Down to McDonald, down to Conkel, as Conkow is going to draw the shooting foul. Great no-look bounce past by McDonald there to get the ball to Ashley Conkel, and all the Yellow Jackets could do is. foul or to stop it. Yeah. Conkul would have had a wide open layup there if they did not foul. So now Conkul shooting two free throws on the season.

She is a, she's going to make the first free throw. On the season, she is a- 70%? 70% free throw shooter. That's pretty good. She's going to make both the free throws, and that's going to help her average right there. Soilsdale now leads 24 to 14, with 7 minutes and 36 seconds left in the season. second quarter really dominating the Cedarville is McCormer's going to get a steal and then step out of bounds oh she was so close right there to stay in bounds almost took it coast to coast she wasn't she had all the space there was

no defense there by the way that she picked off that pass nobody in front of her but foot just stepped out possession will stay with the yellow jackets that's 20 seconds remain in the shot clocks they never gave the possession to Hillsdale but it's not going to go down as a steel just a tip pass hillsdale Cedarville with the ball. Pass out to, tipped off of, Butterball, tipped off of butterball.

Tipped off of butterball's hands out of bounds. It's going to be Charger basketball. Yes. As Cedarville once again, pressing Hillsdale, Mills with a pass down to Splain. This little zone trap here. Splane with the ball to McDonald's

kind of picked off, jumbled around, and then Cedarville grabs the, or grabs the, grabs the ball, and then Cedarville turns it over. Now Lauren McDonald with the ball. Taking on Casey Kyle. Misses the layup.

And the ball is still jumbled around. And now it's Cedarville's possession. I don't think anybody had possession there for about 15 seconds. That was a wild. I still don't know what's going on right now. Tip pass out of bounds. It'll be Cedarville ball. McDonald was the one who tipped it out for the charges there.

And we're finally going to get a breather in the action. A little bit of a break here because, yeah. There was about seven turnover. Possession changed, I think, five times in 15 seconds. As they're going to get the ball into Butterball. Guarded by Lauren McDonald. Ball out to Betts. Betts, taking the drive, taking on Sydney Mills.

Out to Hale. Hale, trying to drive it in. Ball's tipped by McDonald on some help defense. Stays with Hale, though, as she picks up her dribble. Ball up to Bets. Bets, with the layup on Savannah Smith, but misses it. Great defense there by Smith. is Hilda looks to take the ball on early

and Sidney Mills with a short little jumper. Great touch for Mills there. Same thing. She's dribbling. She's driving in hard, stops, pull up, jump shot from about eight feet out. Yeah, Butterball trying not to follow there.

Just try to draw the charge. Stood straight up. And Sidney Mills planted early. Took the wide open shot that they gave her. It's going to be a shot here by Neely. But Neely is going to miss. It's short. Chargers running in transition.

ball up to Splain on the top of driving in great drive and easy layup for her great move against Butterball Splane got her to move just a little bit on the shot fake there and drove right past her for the layup yep it's Butterbaugh looking to make up a little bit of points those are currently up 28 to 14 with five minutes left to go in the second quarter Neely passed up from Hale Hale trying to take on Kendall McCormick McCormick, great defense, hailed us to pick up her dribble, and she throws kind of an errant pass, but Neely grabs it,

Neely with a little fadeaway jumper against Smith, and she's not going to make it. Really solid defense by the Chargers on back-to-back possessions there, making everything tough for Cedarville. Yeah, Savannah Smith had that kind of questionable foul earlier that we talked about, but from then on she's been solid defensively. Lauren McDonnell with another reverse layup, almost identical move to the one that she had earlier, where she drove under the basket, under the baseline, and then hit that reverse layup with her right hand. McDonald was moving on an offense layer. Like she didn't, like there was nobody playing defense. Her defender did not phase her whatsoever.

She dribbled right past her for the reverse layup. Great move. She is on fire to start this game. Yeah, Betts. Pass out to Neely. Neely, Smith playing great help defense as she drives past. Pass out to Betts. Betts is going to miss the three-pointer, and McCormer is going to grab the contested rebound.

Trying to take it all the way. She's got a lane. And she makes the layup. A little bit of a hesitation, Euro step at the end of that fast break. I think she was unsure about what to do, kind of hoping for the defender to reach up and grab a foul, but she instead just makes the basket. Splay now on the other end driving, and she draws a foul.

And not super surprising, looking at these teams coming to this game.

Hillsdale, four-game win streak, playing some of their best basketball of the season. Cedarville really struggling coming into this game. Yeah, especially missing two of their better players. Their best player, the girl who averages 19 points a game, and the only player in the double digits average is out today. Zaychecks still in the game. They put Zaycheck back in and she's going to hit the and one, which is good for them because up until that point,

they had nobody with more than one basket. They had two people with three-point baskets, and those were their highest scores. Yeah, typically you wouldn't leave Zaycheck in the game with this many fouls early on, but they're not getting offensive output from anybody else, so you can't take her out. You literally. Hale is still in there as well. Yeah, Zayechek is going to miss the free throw, so it's going to stay at two-point possession,

but those are currently up 34 to 16 with three minutes and 43 seconds left in the second quarter. As Blaine's going to take a couple dribbles, pass it out to Pannasik. with a great pass to Adkins Adkin with the fake and the layoff's going to go around and fall in great move there by Peyton Adkins to get past to the defender a nice little pump fake

yep a little fadeaway jump shot from the short corner oh she almost gets to steal on defense going up against Hale though she makes the shot very contested and shot's going to be missed and rebounded by Emma Rulman Kaelin's Blaine now taking the ball up for the Chargers. Pat out to Panassik. Panasonic driving and going to make the layup over the Cedarville

defender. Nice job by Panasic recognizes she had a little bit of a mismatch and take advantage of it. Yeah, Hillstall at this point feels like they can do no wrong, especially when they're inside of that three point art. Well, they're taking good shots. They're getting really close shots to the basket. As Neely is going to hit the three-pointer for Cedarville, Hill still leading 38 to 19 double Cedarville. This ball's going to go to Emma Rulman out to Peyton Adkins. He's going to make another pump fake, another layup. well on offense, getting open looks close to the basket, and they're hitting them. On the other side, Cedarville has not done much to stop them on defense. They're trying to be physical, but they've really just gotten in foul trouble. We're also running that half court, or not half court, the full court

trapping press after made baskets. I think they've been able to force one turnover. I don't think any. They got one. Well, it was when we had that sort of weird back and fourth period of multiple turnovers on each side. But other than that, it hasn't caused a lot of problems for the chargers who've been able to break it easily and get right of their offense.

And I think part of the problem off of that is that he'll still started pushing the ball down because they realized not only can we beat this press, but we can beat this press and have the advantage on the offensive side, right? So Hillsdale really been a great job. I've actually seen a lot of individual players for Hillsdale on random possessions, just boxing out the one player that had a chance to get the offensive. Yeah, I don't, I don't.

think it's as simple as drawing it up to a height advantage, even though the Chargers do have a height advantage. They've also just played fundamentally well. Caitlin Splain has got a number of rebounds just by being in good position. Yeah. And even with her a little bit of a disadvantage at size against most players. Yep. Star clusters are gravitationally bound groups of stars, which form together in space and time and reveal much about the mysteries of star formation and development. In 130 BC, Greek astronomer Hipparchus first cataloged the double cluster, a pair of open star clusters in the constellation Perseus. The double cluster contains at least 20,000 solar masses of stars, including many blue-white supermassive stars. Every star you can see in the double cluster with binoculars is much brighter than our sun.

The double cluster is faint, but well worth the hunt. To see it, find the W of Cassiopeia, then look a little left of the wider side of the W for a large hazy patch. Yeah, there were some steps back taken, some mistakes made maybe in that second half, but overall, very commanding win. I don't think the lead, I don't think the score ever got closer than 17.
