The following is a special presentation of WRFH Sports.
Crowd is roaring. It's a sold-out game here.
Takes the three. We've got that one to go.
With the left hand, off the glass.
G-MAC player in the year.
Two shots to layup, bounces off the left side of the rim, offensive rebound.
Sidney Mills puts it back up and in.
There's that size advantage, easy layups.
Hillsdale Charger Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM starts now.
Oh, hearty, hello to you from the George C. Roche Sports and Athletics Complex here, the beautiful Hillsdale College.
High atop Don Tibbitts Potter Arena, Louis Thune, joined by Payton Hughes, as we prepare to tip off the 2025-2020s.
Hillsdale College women's basketball season.
Tonight, the hometown chargers welcome the University of Illinois Springfield, Prairie Stars, in game one of the Midwest region crossover.
it's great to be back up here with you.
It is always a pleasure.
Hillsdale coming off a great season last year.
Cannot say the same for UIS.
That's right.
Hillsdale enters off a red-hot 2024, 2025 campaign,
finishing 21 and 10,
and second in the GMAC regular season,
but Payton, this team has lost a lot of its productivity.
That's right, exactly.
Three starters for the Chargers graduated.
Lauren McDonald, Caitlin Splain, and Kendall McCormick.
Kendall McCormick obviously being pivotable, pivotable for defense,
and Lauren McDonald being the key all-workaround player for the Hillsdale Chargers.
She was leading in rebounds.
She was leading in assists.
She was great in the paint.
She was great anywhere from mid-range.
But that's, speaking of mid-range, we're going to go to the three-point.
Look at Caitlin Splain.
She was the three-point threat for the Hillsdale Chargers.
Completed 71 of 225 three-point attempts.
more than double any other player on the Hillsdale Chargers team.
She was a, she was the threat from deep for the Chargers.
We need to see who's going to fill that today.
Contrast this Hillsdale team with the Prairie Stars from Springfield.
And they look far better comparatively at 24 point win last year.
And Springfield coming off of a 5 and 23 season lost 10 of their 13 roster players,
retaining guard Kayla Rice and center Alicia McDaniel.
But apart from those two, every starter from that Prairie Star lineup and much of the bench is gone.
They do welcome in two transfers and guards Kennedy Osterman from Wisconsin Oshkosh and Brin tabling from the now defunct limestone University Payton.
Hillsdale enters this matchup as the clear favorite, returning two starters and Annalise Petrizik,
who is a critical role player last year.
What's the key to victory going to be for Hillsdale tonight and how can Springfield counter them?
Well, losing Splane this year, obviously, like I said, a minute ago is going to be a pain from that three-point game.
So what I want to see is a good working one, two, out of Savannah Smith and Ellie Bruce.
Both were very dominant in the pain last year.
As Savannah Smith went down with an injury with the last month left, Ellie Bruce came in really strong.
She was averaging eight points a game.
So we want to see them, we want to see Hillsdale work the pain, free up that ball to get better outside shots.
Hopefully you see the average move out from the three point.
That's right, Payton.
The post game was so critical for Hillsdale last year.
It really helped him in a deep GMAC conference.
On the other side, you have Springfield, obviously returning Kayla Rice,
their top score from last year, top in productivity,
but started the season off poor and was not able to rebound from that.
Is it going to be a story of Kayla Rice for Springfield tonight?
Are they going to need to rely on productivity elsewhere?
No, I think you have to.
You have to rely on Kayla Rice.
She was averaging 15.8 points per game, three steals per game.
She led the offense last year, and now she's only one of three returning players,
one of two returning starters.
Kayla Rice needs to be the pivotal moment, the pivotal point of this offense,
and she needs to lead that defense, getting turnovers with steals.
Hopefully the rest of the team, which brings in a couple transfers, like you said,
and Bryn Tabling and Osterman, so you need to see them rallying around Kayla Rice,
get her open, get her shooting the best shots on the team.
It's also going to be interesting to see these Hillsdale guards, obviously all of them new in the starting lineup, save Petrizik, who was an occasional starter last year.
But a thing we saw from Hillsdale last year, they struggled with the press in critical moments and they really leaned on Caitlin Spley and Lauren McDonald in every facet of the game, but especially under pressure to break that press and produce points in close games.
Obviously, young guards here between Sarah Alecinovicious and Magdalena Solarski
will be starting tonight for the Chargers.
Do you think Springfield is going to come out in that press early on in the game?
We saw plenty of teams do it last year against a really experienced Hillsdale lineup.
Is it possible we could see Springfield turn up the intensity early on
and try and catch this Hillsdale team Napa?
That's what I'd like to see.
I mean, we called a few games last year.
It was pretty obvious that Hillsdale couldn't do too well, like you said.
Caitlin Splain was able to be super quick, super fast.
She was a great ball handler.
It allowed the floor to open up for Hillsdale when she was playing.
They were able to break the press that way.
Lauren McDonald, very strong.
She will impose her will on that defense so they could break the press there.
But now with those two gone, we need to see who that strong point guard figure is going to be for the Hillsdale Chargers
to be able to break through that, you know, really strong defense.
The worst thing for Hillsdale last year was scoring under 60 points.
In games where they scored under 60 points, Hillsdale couldn't be.
win. They have a losing record
very consistently. Do you want
to be able to break through that 60 point
mark? That was the number last year.
All right, catching you up on starters. At center
for Hillsdale, it'll be Ellie Bruce,
Emma Rulman as the other forward, and then
Petrusik, Alicanavicious, and
Magdalena Solarski at the guards.
For Springfield, starting
at center, will be Alessia McDaniel,
Allison Wheeler at Forward,
and Molly Knight,
Kennedy Osterman, and Kayla
Rice as the guards.
The opening tip off is underway, and Annalise Petrizik walks up the court and buries a three for Hillsdale as Springfield now gets the ball.
Kayla Rice bringing it up for the Prairie Stars.
Obviously, their biggest contributor last year.
Passing around the perimeter, they moved the ball to the transfer Kennedy Ostroman, the grad student from Wisconsin, Oshkosh, missed the three.
Rebound to Hillsdale as Solarski will bring the ball up.
Passes left to Petrissik and back to center court.
right there is alicanavicious hands the ball off to salarski who looks for something on the perimeter
cutting deep is patricic gets a pass and attempts to enter it to emma ruleman but it is intercepted by
alison wheeler who moves the ball up court for springfield ball is to caler rice and back to wheeler
molly knight has the ball on the left wing drives puts up a floater with the left hand from mid range
it's no good contested rebound ellie bruce comes away with it and solarsky will bring the ball up
the Chargers.
Entrance pass to Petrizik.
Patriczic doesn't see it.
It is intercepted there from Alessia McDaniel.
Ball goes to Springfield and bringing the ball up is Molly Knight.
She drives left side immediately.
Quick pace there from Springfield.
She is fouled and we'll head to the line for two free throws.
Real, real quick pace here to start the game, Peyton.
Real quick.
This is not what you want to see for Hillsdale.
I mean, Springfield is not playing tight defense.
They're not playing full court press, but Hillsdale is throwing the ball where they don't need to be,
throwing it where the players just aren't looking.
Correction. Foul called, they're on the ground, so Springfield will inbound.
Once again to Molly Knight.
She drives errant pass, but Springfield corrals it.
Move it out to the corner for Osterman, who makes the three, three, three game.
Solarsky brings the ball up for Hillsdale.
Obviously, this is the first time in a long time.
It hasn't been Splained McDonald, but Salarsky, looking like,
Lauren McDonald there sees a lane takes it the layup is good from the left side Hillsdale moves up
five to three with the ball there is Springfield once again passing it around the perimeter
now in for Springfield is Julia Mingus Osterman gets the ball on the right wing puts up a three
and it is no good rebound to Magdalena Solarski a jump ball is called and Springfield will take
possession. Subs coming in for Springfield. See this trying to really work the deep bench
incoming brim tabling transfer student from limestone here for this Springfield lineup. So much
needed experience. There's three juniors and two grad students on this Springfield lineup and the
rest of them are freshmen. Rest of them are all freshmen. Very young. And they're Kayla Rice.
Kayla Rice steps up with the three off the inbound pass and makes it.
Solarski will bring the ball back up for Hillsdale.
She passes left to Rulman, who puts up an open two-pointer.
It's no good, but the rebound goes to Ellie Bruce.
She puts up a right-hander, no-good.
Rebound to Sarah Alecanovicious, and she is fouled in the paint.
Some great offensive rebounding there for Hillsdale.
Those created a lot of opportunities last year.
Between Bruce, between Smith, Marilyn Popowell putting in work there.
Well, once again, foul was called on the ground, not in the air.
So Hillsdale will inbound.
Ellie Bruce takes the inbound
pass and hands off to Magdalena Solarski
He'll look to set up the offense
Alecanovicious left side of center court
Passes right to Petrizik
Over to Solarsky in the corner
Who enters it to Ellie Bruce
That's what we wanted to see out of Hillsdale
They run the four ones on the outside
Keep Ellie Bruce on the inside
They work things around
Got it up and over to Bruce
And she just laid that right in
When you're moving that ball lightning fast
Around the perimeter it's opening up a window
For that entry pass
They're fronting Ellie Bruce
but it was great pass from Salarsky as Bruce puts it in.
In for Springfield is Libby Blythe and she puts up a three contested, but it's good.
9-7 Springfield and now checking in for Hillsdale is Savannah Smith, the junior,
and checking out is Ali Bruce.
So we'll see Smith's first minutes of the season.
A key contributor for Hillsdale last year started in most of the games when she was not injured.
obviously that injury is a heavy toll for this Hillsdale team Smith gets the ball entered off the inbound pass puts up a shot and this one is in the air she will go to the free throw line for two with a chance to tie up the ball game here six minutes into the first quarter first play back in the game Solarsky doing exactly not Solarsi I apologize Savannah Smith doing exactly what we saw last year
Ellie Bruce Ellie Bruce was a freshman last year Savannah Smith got injured Ellie Bruce got to start and showed her strength down in the paint Savannah Smith comes in
Ball goes into Rulman down low.
Rulman sees Smith, just an arm open.
That was enough for her.
She gets at the Smith.
Smith gets some shots up, immediately making a play.
Smith made free throws last year at an 86% pop.
She makes the first, misses the second, but rebound is to Hillsdale,
as Petrizzik will run the offense.
She enters the ball to Alicanovicius, who drives close.
Fowl is called.
It looks like a push on Springfield.
Alloconovicius was driving to the basket.
contested call there could have been a charge there on Alecinovish's but it goes
Hillsdale's way they have the ball here 9-8 and now coming in for Emma
Rulman is number 11 Sydney Panassick a good shooter last year for Hillsdale he could
look to get her the ball off of this inbound pass Salarsky will inbound to Savannah
Smith she passes to Patrizik at the top of the key ball is entered to Panassik
Panassik reverses it back out to Solarski who had the open three turned it down
got open yet again and made a three of her own she passed up a good look to create a better one you love to see it out of a young guard
Springfield will bring the ball up hillsdale did not get back in time little opportunity there for springfield but they're able to close the window
ball is entered and tied up another jump ball is called it was Libby blythe trying to get the ball to brin tabling the five four guard inside
And Magdalena Solarski got her hand in there to cause the jump ball.
11-9 Hillsdale as they take over five minutes through the first.
There just wasn't a lot of movement for Springfield on that drive.
They got it out to the corner and then kind of let it sit there.
He tried to go low but people weren't moving on the perimeter.
People weren't moving on the inside.
Hillsdale was able to keep a couple girls down low and get a stop.
Solarsky will bring the ball up smothered by Molly Knight.
She enters the ball to Annalise Petrissic.
Gets open on a two-pointer.
but it is no good
rebound goes to Kayla Rice
who passes the ball
to Kennedy Osterman
and once again
they move the ball
into the left corner
for Allison Wheeler
she passes back out
to Molly Knight
nothing going
good defense from Annalise Petrisick
is Kayla Rice
will take the ball
drives penetrates
and finds an open
Olesea McDaniel
but it's no good
Springfield
corrals a long rebound
Kayla Rice with the ball
out
at the three point line shot is no good barely beating the shot clock hillsdale will take the ball
petrizzik brings it up for the chargers looking to go up two buckets here entrance pass is sent
inside and off savannah smith's hands too far out there and it is called out of bounds springfield
will take the ball aden 119 not a great performance to start from hillsdale but definitely could have
been worse? Oh, for sure. I mean, Hillsdale's doing somewhat of what they want to do. The first
couple drives were not, not exactly where they were trying to go. They were too fast. They were making
too many passes too quickly. It led to a couple of early turnovers from Petrizik, from Solarski.
Solarski liked to drive. She had two open looks, ended up converting one of those. I like to see
that, open the floor for the rest of your team. But then we also see Ellie Bruce down low. We see Savannah
Smith down low. Right there, Smith on the pick and roll. The pass could have been a little better,
but the eyesight was there.
That was the right play call.
Just didn't end up working out.
That will turn out next time.
They will do better.
Hillsdale is seeing the floor right now.
They're making plays happen.
And then defensively,
Hillsdale's not having to move very much.
I mean, the nine points that it seems like Springfield has
are coming from good shots
rather than really moving the floor,
working their offense the way that they want to do.
Springfield is going to have to slow this game down,
work that offense around the key.
They haven't been working down low.
So Savannah Smith and Ellie Bruce have been real strong down in the box,
preventing McDaniel from doing just about anything.
Both offenses running four around the perimeter and a post player in the middle.
For Hillsdale, that's been Ellie Bruce.
You also saw Savannah Smith checking in for Hillsdale.
And Springfield has been relying on Alicia McDaniel to front Ellie Bruce and the post.
That's created turnovers for them.
Only one bucket for Smith so far, or for Smith and Bruce combined so far.
Two turnovers off of it.
Hillsdale comes out of the timeout in a half court.
In a one-three-one press, it looks like.
Springfield breaks at the ball.
It's past a Molly Knight in the corner, and she steps out of bounds.
Turnover, ball goes to Hillsdale.
Now we will see.
Also note, number 15, Maddie Smith coming in at Point Guard, the freshman from Alabama.
We haven't seen her.
before. We'll see the first action from the
freshman here tonight. She brings the
ball up, passes to Solarski.
Alecanovicious enters the ball to
Smith and Smith with the bucket. Great pass
between two defenders. Savannah Smith, great
footwork to put that up. Another two points
in the post for Hillsdale. Ball
in the corner to Allison Wheeler
and she passes the ball
to Kennedy Osterman. Osterman
looking for something, can't quite get it.
Passes back out to Molly Knight who penetrates but can't
find an open pass.
aborts the shot, sent the ball back out to the perimeter.
Springfield reverses the ball back tonight.
She drives once again, and this time she puts up the shot.
It's good.
13-11 Hillsdale, Springfield narrowing the deficit as Aluconovicious takes the ball for Hillsdale.
Passes the ball out to the left corner to Panassik who enters it to Savannah Smith.
But the trap is there from Springfield.
Once again, McDaniel fronting, and Kennedy Osterman got a hand in there,
knocked the ball out of bounds.
Hillsdale will retain possession, but it looks like Springfield has adjusted to those post entries,
and they're now doubling off of the catch where the Hillsdale Post could present some issues.
Like we said, this Hillsdale team has relied heavily on their guards in the past couple years.
If they have to lean on the forwards, and Springfield is able to shut down the forwards,
as you see, another entry, and the ball is doubled down,
but Smith passes the ball back out to Sydney Panasic.
They're doubling Smith down low.
What that means, that opened up Solarski to come down and get a drop,
but Smith ended up going back out for the three.
Next time, let's look for that position download of Solarsky.
And that would be Amelia Solarski now checked in for Magdalena.
The twin has Hillsdale.
It appears another jump ball is called,
but Springfield will retain possession.
Some careless passes early on in this game from both Hillsdale and Springfield.
Springfield. A lot of inbounds plays. None have cashed in yet.
Ball is inbounded to Allison Wheeler and quickly set out to Kennedy Osterman on the perimeter who passes to Kayla Rice.
Kayla Rice with the isolation against Maddie Smith.
Still has the ball up at the top of the key.
Gets three steps in from the perimeter and step back two-pointer is no good.
Rebound goes to Ellie Bruce. Ball is moved up to Amelia Solarski to Petrizik.
And the entry pass to Ellie Bruce.
It's good.
Once again, quick passes from Hillsdale, opening up the post.
And that's what you love to see from your post player,
not having to take a dribble in order to get an open shot up.
Springfield brings the ball up.
Immediate penetration from Julia Mingus.
She's able to pass the ball into the post to look like Libby Blythe,
and Blythe makes the two.
An intercepted pass from Kayla Rice.
Springfield will bring the ball up.
And moving with speed is John.
Julia Mingus, she puts up a shot, but it is blocked by Ellie Bruce.
Bruce got the block there, but these, both of the last two possessions,
Maddie Smith has gotten beaten, gotten beaten to the ball.
And Smith and Ellie Bruce has had to come back over and either get a block
and then turn in the last game.
In the last possession, she got foul.
Ball is blocked and out of bounds off of Hillsdale, so Springfield will keep it.
And here, once again, is Kennedy Osterman looking to penetrate.
Back up to Kayla Rice, she passes to the corner for Julia,
Mingus, who's able to penetrate off the left hand
under the basket. Out to the corner
to Kennedy Osterman and Osterman
with the open three off
of that penetration from Mingus puts it in
18, 16, Hillsdale.
Magdalena Solarski brings the ball up, attempts to enter
to Amelia and the pass
is picked off by
Kayla Rice. Fowl is
called on Amelia Solarski trying to wrestle
that ball away from Rice. Springfield
will keep the ball a minute 30 left
in the first quarter.
and Hillsdale is now in a full court press.
Ball is inbounded to tabling who passes up to Rice and the press is broken.
Rice looking for penetration yet again off the left hand.
Can't find it.
Ball is back out to Blythe and into the corner to Kennedy Osterman.
She passes the ball to the top of the key, the free throw line to Alandon Simmons,
who quickly reverses the ball back out to the corner to Kennedy.
Kennedy Osterman, who makes the three putting Springfield up 1918 with a minute to play in the first quarter.
Annalise Petrizik with the ball for Hillsdale.
She gets penetration, but is not able to find Ellie Bruce in the post.
Pushes the ball out to Panassik, who dribbles in, puts up a floater from inside the paint.
It's no good.
Rebound Springfield as Osterman brings the ball up, passes to Rice.
And back to Osterman on the left side.
She sets up the offense guarded by Amelia Solarski.
ball is reversed out to Kayla Rice
and then to Bryn tabling
in the left corner is Kennedy Oesterman
putting up another corner three
this time it's no good
but Springfield gets the rebound
Alandon Simmons
a foul is called on Hillsdale
attempting to go for that jump ball
Alandon Simmons will check out and back in
is Alicia McDaniel
37 seconds left to play
in the first quarter. Springfield
will inbound the ball up one.
Balls passed out to Osterman
on the key, drives with the left hand
and passes to the left corner.
Kayla Rice, with her left hand right by
the baseline, reverses to her right,
puts up a wobbly shot. It's no good.
Rebound to Megdalena Solarski.
She will bring the ball up for Hillsdale.
He's able to shake, tabling,
passes the ball to Alecanovicious,
and then to Amelia Solarski, who puts up the three,
and it's good.
on that shot coming off of a high screen Amelia Solarski put it up and put it down 21 19 Hillsdale
seven seconds left to play Springfield looking to create a shot on the perimeter Molly Blythe
smothered by Emma Rulman but the foul is called on Rulman there at the perimeter with 0.9 seconds to
play careless foul there from Emma Rulman as Hillsdale will not send Blythe to the line foul was
called on the ground. Thankfully, as Blythe threw up a shot over her head. No shooting foul was
called, so Springfield will have 0.9 seconds to create a shot. Ball is given to Osterman. She puts
up the shot. It is no good. Sarah Alicanavicious on the defense 21-19 Hillsdale at the end of
the first quarter. We'll recap it and prepare you for the second quarter. But for now,
we'll sign off for just a minute for some station programming. You're listening to Hillsdale

Welcome back to Dawn Tippett's Potter Arena, Louis Thune, alongside Payton Hughes,
one quarter of action down in the season tip-off for the Hillsdale Chargers women's basketball team,
up 2119 on Illinois Springfield.
Payton, what is the story of that first quarter for Hillsdale?
Hillsdale turnovers again.
and again and again, four turnovers in the first quarter.
Eight of 13 from shooting, so really solid there, 61.5% completion percentage.
But when you're giving the ball away way too many times, way consistently,
and Springfield has been able to make something out of those turnovers, get points.
They've taken four more shots than Hillsdale, even though they have half as many rebounds.
Hillsdale is dominating the game from a scrappiness perspective,
but they're making too many stupid mistakes to need to take their time on offense,
work the ball outside, just like we've been saying, work it back.
inside. Still a strong offensive performance from Hillsdale in that first quarter, obviously
21. Defense is poor, gave up 19, but if you remember, that magic number from last year was
60 points. If Hillsdale can put up 60, they're winning the game. Obviously off to a great start
here in the first quarter, we're not sure if this Hillsdale defense is what it was last year,
as Hillsdale will turn the ball over off of a jump ball, and Springfield will take it to begin
the second quarter.
Out on the perimeter is
Julia Mingus. She falls over, tries to throw up
a pass. It's intercepted by Hillsdale, who
moved the ball on the fast break to Emma Rulman. Left
hand and layup is good uncontested.
2319 Hillsdale.
Nice turnover force. They're good.
Hillsdale defense, obviously.
Losing Kendall McCormick was big, and there's another
mistake for Springfield.
Mingus once again sending the ball
around the perimeter, but no one
was there. And it was, and it
flies straight out of bounds. Hillsdale takes the ball with speed. It's Magdalena Solarski.
Crosses to her left hand and the ball is stolen. Attempted to cross up Brin tabling.
They're tabling attempting to slow down on the fast break, sends the ball off of her foot.
And they give the ball right back to Hillsdale. That's three turnovers to start that second quarter for Springfield.
Three turnovers in the span of one minute.
Now Kaylee Rice and Allison Wheeler subbing in for Springfield. Hillsdale defense, they
They're shifting something up.
Alecanovich is here.
She's not playing tight, man.
She's playing within the paint.
That's six people on the court for Springfield.
Looks like they're debating it.
Bit of confusion there between the officials and the Springfield coaching staff.
Young team, obviously, for coach Olivia Burt.
And first game of the season.
But here we are.
All right.
Springfield has the lineup figured out.
It'll be Kayla Rice up at the top of the key guarding Magdalena Solarski
He passes to Alecinovicious, guarded by Molly Knight.
Ball is entered to Emma Rulman.
Rulman smothered, passes the ball back out to Alicanavicious.
13 seconds on the shot cock.
Alicanavicious drives with the right hand.
No good there.
Passes out to Annalise Petrissik, who takes the contested three
and puts it in from the left side.
Petrissick's second three-pointer of the night.
It's good for Hillsdale, 2619, opening up a seven-point lead.
Kayla Rice drives straight off of the inbound
and moves the ball to the corner for Julia Mingus.
Her shot is no good, but she collects her own rebound,
sends the ball back out to Molly Knight on the perimeter,
and Knight is able to put it in for Springfield.
Three-pointer is good.
26-22. Hillsdale will take the ball.
Solarsky drives in immediately and passes the ball to Ellie Bruce,
misses with the left hand off of the pivot, Springfield.
Opening up the pace here, ball is sent out to Molly Knight.
She moves it over to Julia Mingus,
who once again puts up a corner three shot is no good.
Fowl is called against Springfield there on the rebound,
so Hillsdale will keep it.
Hillsdale works the ball to Ellie Bruce on that last possession,
but Ellie Bruce surrounded by three Springfield girls there
just couldn't do enough.
Springfield is collapsing the second that ball gets into the paint.
That's going to leave those more shots open.
Why are shows open?
Pace, pace, pace with the rapid subs for Springfield.
They're sprinting up and down the court,
checking in once again is Alandon Simmons for Paula Streletsky.
Hillsdale puts up a long two.
It's no good for the Chargers rebound is to Springfield.
And once again, moving the ball with pace.
Mali Nard, guarded by Alikenovicious on the perimeter,
throws up a careless pass, tipped by Alkaovicious,
picked off by Petrissik, back to Alikenovicious on the fast break.
They choose to hit the brakes and send the ball back to Petrissic.
She enters the ball to Ellie Bruce fronted by a Landon,
Simmons, but Bruce is able to put
in the shot off of a tough catch
there. Looked like she bobbled it, but
off the backboard and in for Ellie Bruce
Hillsdale 2822.
Springfield, right back to the post
to Landon Simmons with the right hand.
No good, barely, and Magdalena
Solarski will take the ball.
Passes to Emma Rulman, who will
control the offense from the left side of the court,
dribbles to the center, look
to enter it to Alicanavicious, thought against
it, and to the right corner to Solarski.
A beautiful entry pass to
Bruce, who sends it back out to Petrizzik, inside-out game.
Payden, the three-pointer is good for Petrizzik.
Once again, 3122 Hillsdale, an offensive explosion here in the first four.
You just saw Kaylee Rice and Molly Knight collapse down low.
Again, leaving that three-point open.
It's just going to be there if Ellie Bruce is still a threat down low.
Kayla Rice needs to buy this Springfield offense.
A bucket.
Let's see if she can do it.
And once again, the ball is turned over.
Rice sent the ball over to Mingus,
who drove, attempted the entry pass to Alandon Simmons, and went awry.
Ball was not touched by either team, straight out off of Mingus's hands.
And the ball comes to Hillsdale, a nine-point advantage, and a scoring offense that is
clicking on all cylinders, as Solarsky will bring the ball in.
Springfield will once again substitute.
Rice nearly poked the ball away from Petrissik, but Petrissac corralled it, dribbled back in
and entered it to Savannah Smith, who took an open jumper from what looked like about 12 feet out.
It's no good.
Ball has moved to Kayla Rice.
She passes the ball to tabling on the left side, who immediately rifles it back to the right corner for Libby Blyde.
It's no good, but the rebound is to Alessia McDaniel, and she puts up a two with the right hand.
It's good.
31, 24, as we take a timeout.
A great offensive showing and some turnovers there for Springfield.
We'll pause for a minute.
You're listening to Hillsdale Women's Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
My name is Megan Peacock, and you're listening to What's in the Name on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Today we'll be talking about the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, Arizona.
Its history starts in 400 AD with the Hojokham people who built an effective irrigation,
system through canalways in the desert, which still exists in pieces today.
It is believed a drought led to their demise in 1400 AD.
Its modern history starts in the 19th century, when, in 1867, a Confederate soldier by the name
of Jack Swilling founded the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company.
He moved there to take advantage of what the Ho-Hocum had already built.
Because it was a city rising from the ashes of a past civilization, fellow pioneer Daryl Dupac suggested
the name Phoenix after the mythical bird who did the same.
Thus, the city of Phoenix was born and officially put on the record on May 4, 1868, now the capital of Arizona, and the fifth most popular city in the United States, is named fittingly pays tribute to both the spirit of Pioneer America and the people of ages past.
Once again, I topped on Tibbitts Potter Arena, Lewis Thune, Payton Hughes, midway through the second quarter here as the Hillsdale Women's Basketball Squad opens up their season against Springfield.
ball is inbounded to Salarsky
Hillsdale ball and intercepted
immediately by Kayla Rice who takes the
ball down on the fast break. A quick two
points for Springfield. Hillsdale
tries to counter with pace off the inbound
bad pass to Amelia Solarsky
and out of bounds off of Hillsdale.
So Springfield all of a sudden in the span
of about five seconds
two possessions.
Bryn tabling will bring the ball up for Springfield
passes to the transfer
Kennedy Osterman at the top of the key
and then to the corner for Libby Blythe
reverses it to the other corner off the drive for Kayla Rice puts up a wide open three it's no good
gets her own rebound a great job following her shot there puts up a two as the hillsdale defense
collapses and a shooting foul is called rice will go to the line for two shots amelia salarsky just got
caught guarding the top of the key as she moved down to watch that corner as you moved down to
watch that corner springfield drove she got caught off her feet there's a foul easy points
Hillsdale is really trying to work that ball to the post,
passing it around the perimeter in and then working that inside out game
with Annalise Petrizik.
Counter that, Springfield is seeing an open corner three,
and they're taking it every time.
Not too focused on the post play for Springfield,
which post play is Hillsdale's strength right now.
And Hillsdale has really been focusing on stopping that post play.
They've been having Ellie Bruce work really strong down low.
You're watching Elkanavichis,
bring in down low too and you just saw solarski try and collapse as well it's leaving that corner open a wise decision from coach olivia bert for springfield to play to her team strength and not try and beat hillsdale at their own game as hillsdale misses the three there looked like sydney panassick springfield with the rebound it's once again brin tabling at the top of the key again passing to the corner to liby blythe but this time caler rice is out at the top of the key they'll give the ball to her she passes left side to tabling left side to oesterman who dribbles out back to
center court five seconds on the shot clock no look there for springfield they'll have to throw up a three
it's oesterman and it did not hit the rim a shot clock violation called on springfield a great
defensive possession there for hillsdale strong shell around that perimeter not allowing any
penetration and springfield had to settle for a bad shot i think i saw what four passes on that
possession for springfield that was a full possession just nothing going there springfield's been
playing with pace that is the one exception
as Salarsky brings the ball up for Hillsdale
and enters the ball to Sarah Alicanavicious
who's fouled on a block right there inside the paint.
So Hillsdale will inbound from under the basket
as Savannah Smith checks in for the Chargers
and coming in for Magdalena Salarsky
looks like is Annalise Tertrizik checking back into the game.
She's open for the three off the inbound.
It's no good rebound to Kennedy Osterman for Springfield
who looks to bring the ball up quick,
passes over to Kayla Rice. Rice is not able to get her drive,
but she passes the ball to Bryn Tabling, who is able to enter,
but ruled a double dribble.
An excellent move she put on the Hillsdale defender there.
That looked like, I believe that was Petrizzik there,
got Petrizzik to jump on the pump fake, but double dribble called.
Hillsdale will take the ball.
Yet another turnover for Springfield in this second quarter, down 331, 28.
Alicanavicious with the ball for Hillsdale.
Osterman tries to steal it away,
not off the dribble,
tried to reach into a held ball,
and the reach is called.
Four fouls there for Springfield as Hillsdale will end down.
It's Alica Novicious.
Petrizzik, Panassic, and Green,
the freshmen stacked up on the perimeter
with Savannah Smith alone in the post.
They'll give the ball to Smith,
who catches it.
No dribble, sets her feet,
and it's up with the left hand for a two-point shot.
Easy, although contested there, from Alessia McDaniel.
McDaniel gets the entry from Springfield immediately, once again, pace from Springfield,
but it's no good.
Hillsdale with the rebound, and they'll look to slow the offense.
Check that.
Sidney Panasic will fire, and it is no good.
Elysia McDaniel with the rebound for Springfield ball, up to Bryn Tabling,
who penetrates with the right hand, passes out to the perimeter,
but Maddie Green picks it off for Hillsdale, passes the ball up on the fast break to Sydney Panassick.
Eurostep with the right hand.
No good. Out of bounds. Annalise Petrizik cannot corral the rebound. Springfield ball
as mass subs for both teams right now. Checking in for the first time this season is the senior
Peyton Adkins for Hillsdale. Panasic will stay on the floor. Alicanavicious will stay on the floor
and the freshman Maddie Green will stay in. Coming in is Ellie Bruce for Savannah Smith.
Osterman will bring the ball up for Springfield and Kayla Rice will of course stay on the
floor vital to this offense with these two guards
Osterman and Rice
Osterman enters the ball to number
35 Paulus to Roselsky
passes batted away from Hillsdale but
corralled there by Molly Knight and reversed back out to
Kayla Rice five seconds shot clock she
penetrates against Alecinovicious puts up a
contested two from inside the paint it's no
good Panassick grabs the
rebound and passes to Maddie Green who will
bring the ball up at point for Hillsdale
pass to the right side
for Alicanavicious
and inside to Ellie Bruce
but Bruce can't quite catch it
it out off of Bruce
Springfield takes the ball
33, 28
2 and a half minutes
love to play in the second quarter
The Springfield
inbound goes to Osterman
Osterman
All right Springfield
looking to use a set play here
Offense is taking their time
20 seconds on the shot clock
Molly Knight
Oh Molly Knight lost the ball
Some great defense from the front
freshman Maddie Green as she'll give the ball to Peyton Adkins. Hillsdale will bring it up
forcing another turnover there from the Prairie Stars. Ball is passed back to Maddie Green
who abandons it, tosses it back out to the right corner. Looked like no one was there, but Panasic
was first to get to the ball. Passes to Adkins in the left corner. She enters the ball to
Ellie Bruce and inside out game once again. Springfield collapses on the post. Bruce
sees Alecinovicious out on the three point line sends it out to her and the open three is good 3628 Hillsdale as Springfield looks to find an answer
her points are coming from penetration and their own inside out game and they can't do it this time molly night hurls a pass from corner to corner it's picked off by Peyton adkins who once again gives the ball to sarah alkenovicious who decides to take another three it's no good rebound goes to a landin simmons she will give the ball to kennedy osterman springfield
down eight here, wants to close this deficit as much as possible before half time.
Osterman will take the three.
It rolls around on the rim and is good.
Once again, Kennedy Osterman, providing this vital spark on offense for Springfield.
Such a fast guard.
Plays a lot like Caitlin Spley, who we remember from last year, an absolute motor for Hillsdale.
Springfield bringing some pace to this game as the ball is entered to Panasic inside.
fouled check that that ball was entered atkins on the inside she was fouled on her way up did not get
the ball up into the air very high but the shooting foul was called springfield tried to pick up right
at half court there but alkenovitch just blew right by them and Peyton adkins was ready down low
tries to put up a shot and now she gets two free throws generous call on the shooting foul she was
She was getting grabbed just before she had the ball.
Was not able to get it up to the rim,
but ref thought it enough for Peyton Adkins
as she hits the first free throw
and prepares for the second.
Almost a full line change for Springfield
as they need some buckets here
to close out the first half.
Adkins makes the second.
It's 3831 Hillsdale
and bringing the ball up for Springfield
will be brim tabling.
She passes up to Osterman
hands the ball back off to tabling.
as they set up the offense.
Two high screens.
Tabling decides to use neither.
The ball, her pass is picked off by Peyton Adkins,
intended there for Allison Wheeler.
Adkins on the fast break.
Cashers in the two.
Another turnover.
40 to 31, Hillsdale, 25 second left to play.
The shot clock is nearly off.
This will be the last possession.
Assuming Springfield doesn't turn the ball over again.
Once again, tried to huck a corner to corner pass.
It was batted away by the combined.
efforts of Emma Rulman and Peyton
Adkins. The ball goes out of bounds.
Springfield will keep it.
20 seconds on the game clock, 20 seconds
on the shot clock. Kennedy Osterman
breaks open for the inbound pass, catches
it, and quickly heaves the three.
It's good. I believe
that is Kennedy Osterman's fourth three-pointer
on to this
evening's action. Hillsdale
will take the ball five seconds to make something
happen. Petrizzik all alone.
Beautiful move there from Petrissik.
dribbling in with the right hand to the right corner.
Couple steps in from the three point line.
Waits for the double team and as soon as she feels a hand on her,
she puts up the two-pointer and the foul is called.
So Petrizzik with two and a half seconds left in the first half
will get her two free throws.
First one is no good for Hillsdale.
40 to 34, six point lead and foreseeably Springfield will take their time out.
Make or miss to try and set up a last second shot.
Petrissick makes the second free throw.
No timeout called for Springfield is Brin Tabling.
Brin tabling with the left hand from half court nearly puts it in.
Rims out.
That would have been quite a way to end the half, Payton.
But Hillsdale up 41, 34 as the first half draws to a close.
Payton, I haven't seen Hillsdale play like this in my time here.
It's been Lauren McDonald.
It's been Caitlin Splain, reliable three.
point shooting reliable post work we saw less speed from this hillsdale offense really trusting
the design of that offense less post entries but those created a lot of open three point shots for
annelese patricic who's a vital shooter for this hillsdale offense exactly patrizic is three of four
from three point already nine points just from the three hillsdale is shooting 50 percent from the field
15 of 30 50 percent right now with how this game is going without how with how turnovers have been with
strong defense springfield has been playing 41 points is just surprising to me because hillsdale
is just making everything that they possibly can they're working that ball inside outside they're
making from deep they're making from low i don't know how springfield is supposed to stop this
offense we've set it over and over again for springfield it's all about that pace pedin
basically every springfield player has seen significant minutes tonight they've been
leading on Osterman and Rice to provide that spark.
But from guard to forward, they're running the court very quick,
looking for fast break opportunities and taking advantage of Hillsdale's mistakes,
but they shoot themselves in the foot time and time again with careless passes.
A lot of turnovers in that second quarter,
what's going to be the key to them cleaning up these errors?
It's just, it's like you said, it's slowing down your pace.
Both teams need to slow down.
Springfield is working that ball inside,
but then they're not trying to pass that ball out back to the corner.
Earlier in the game, we saw them working both corners back and forth, back and forth,
and they made a lot of threes.
It brought them back into the lead at the end, in the beginning of the second.
Then you saw them keeping that ball down low where Ellie Bruce, Savannah Smith,
whoever is blocking that box, they have been getting strong steals.
You'll see Petrizzik, you'll see Alkenovic and you'll see Maddie Smith hold down low
and try and get that help defense.
It has been too much.
They've been forcing too many solid turnovers.
that's hillsdale forcing against springfield you've seen hillsdale's offense they've been working
that ball in to ellie bruce and to savannah smith and then back out to the perimeter and that's created
the opening threes springfield's threes have come from perimeter action penetration from guards
it might be the height differential there but alicia mcdaniel and alandin simmons just haven't been
able to get that ball inside for springfield and that's taken away a lot of open three opportunities for
them to the point where they've had to lean
on these fast guards in Kayla Rice
and Kennedy Osterman, who are also the best
shooters in this lineup in order
to create those open shots. They have
not been able to trust this young
lineup yet to this point, and the
post-games isn't there. Well, like I
said, they're trying to move the ball inside
before they move it outside, rather than just going straight
to the corner. If they're going straight to the corner,
it's going to be open, because you're seeing
Alecinovichis and you're seeing Petrizik
try and come back in and clump
inside the box, inside the paint.
To the extent that they can just get nothing going down there,
you're not seeing a lot of postwork at all from Springfield.
McDaniel's been shut down, Wheeler's been shut down,
Simmons have been shut down, down low,
Streletsky has been shut down.
Hillsdale's defense is stacking that paint,
and it's just not allowing for anything.
So if Springfield wants to get some more points on the board,
which they've done great so far, 34 in the first half,
this is a solid Hillsdale defense.
They need to be getting this ball right to the corner,
put up a shot, or then work it back inside and out.
We've got an offensive battle here, Hillsdale up on the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars 41 to 34.
Coach Brennan for Hillsdale and Coach Bert for Springfield.
We'll be having a chess match here at halftime to make the proper adjustments and bring their teams out.
In Springfield's case to try and close this deficit, in Hillsdale's case to try and get this defense active.
And that's where we'll leave it for this first half.
We'll step away for about 10 minutes and be back for some second half action here.
at Don Tibbitts Potter Arena.
You're listening to Radio Free Hillsdale 1.1.7 FM,
and this is Hillsdale Women's Basketball.
Well, welcome back to George G. Rote's Sports and Athletics Complex
here at Hillsdale College in the Dawn Tibbitts Potter Arena.
Lewis Thune, alongside Payton Hughes,
the second half of the Hillsdale Chargers women's basketball
season opener against the University
of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars
is just minutes away. Payton
it has been a clash of styles
in this first half. Something
fierce. Two lineups that lost
a lot of experience from these past
years lineup and
wow they've
actually shown a lot of
strengths for game one of a
new season and breaking in so much new
talent. Precisely. I mean
we saw in those first couple minutes there were a lot
of early turnovers as
Springfield was trying to speed the game up.
Hillsdale was deciding to match that speed rather than slow the game down like they like to do.
And so you saw early turnovers, but both teams have tried to fit into their desired game plan.
You're seeing Springfield constantly speed down the floor, down the floor, down the floor,
get the ball to the corner, pop the three.
They've put up 34 points in the first half.
Then you see Hillsdale, they're getting down the floor.
They're slowing the game down.
They're working the ball around the perimeter and then into either Ellie Bruce or Savannah Smith
with the threat of players like Petrizik who can put the three back from the perimeter.
It has been a great offense, 41 points in the first half.
It's been only speed for Springfield.
Coach Bert has been on top of subs.
She's putting her players in for sprints and sprints and sprints and checking them out.
All of Springfield is seeing action tonight on the Hillsdale side,
especially in that second quarter.
They slowed down, they ran their offense their way,
and it resulted in a lot of open shots.
lot of fouls. Springfield kept giving them the ball on turnovers. Springfield can eliminate that.
We could be looking at a very different second half as Springfield will inbound the ball to begin the
second half. And once again, speed, Molly Knight will penetrate with the right hand, puts up a layup,
contested. It's no good. Hillsdale gets the rebound. Bring the ball. Okay, Springfield has moved to his
zone defense here as Hillsdale will look to break it. The ball is out to Magdalena Solarsky.
She enters the ball into Ellie Bruce, inside out, once again, to Annalise Petrissic.
This time she is not able to make it.
The rebound goes to Allison Wheeler for Springfield, and she will give the ball to Kennedy Osterman,
the leading score for Springfield in the first half.
Kayla Rice, back to Osterman, center, and Springfield will look to use a set play here.
Osterman off the screen, passes the ball to Wheeler, back to Osterman, does not use the three,
passes instead to Molly Knight who penetrates and once again finds Osterman open on the outside so there you see Osterman passing up a good look to create a great one Molly Knight penetrates with the right hand she's able to reverse that ball out to Osterman and the three-pointer is good and a quick turnover here for Hillsdale Steel comes to Springfield and ball to Osterman again they will set the offense two high posts on the elbows two guards in the corners Osterman at the top of the key they reverse the ball quickly to the corner it's Kayla Rice for three
Short, rebound. Magdalena Solarski bringing the ball up at the top of the key.
Kayla Rice nearly steals the ball there.
Magdalena picks up her dribble and the ball is passed right to Sarah Alikenovicious,
who penetrates up with the left hand and is fouled by Alicia McDaniel.
Two shots for Sarah Alicanavicious, 41-37 ball game.
You have to note right there, Ellie Bruce comes up to the high post.
Hillsdale still running four on the perimeter.
that left the room for Alekenovitchis to push that left elbow and draw the defender
that was Elysia McDaniel in for the foul as Alicanvichis had the open shot.
Coach Bert, for Springfield, two big adjustments in the second half,
went into his own defense.
It looks like a one-three-one.
And then offensively, she has her two posts on the elbows,
her two guards in the corners, and then she has Kennedy,
Osterman running the offense as Alkenavish is able to make both free throws, 43-7.
And Osterman will bring the ball up for Springfield.
Let's see if it can generate some points for this Springfield offense.
At this point, they've relied entirely on speed.
It looks like the offense is broken here, and they're just going to rely on a thrown-up shot from Osterman.
Never mind there.
Osterman nearly cashes in a two-point shot.
She abandoned her own shot, gave the ball.
to Alicia McDaniel, who put it up, missed it, got her own rebound,
and sent it back out to Oesterman on the perimeter.
So Springfield will get another opportunity there off that offensive rebound.
It's Osterman in the corner, passes to Kayla Rice at the top of the key.
She pump fakes, Rulman does not bite.
Drives with the right hand, gets past Rulman,
and the shot is blocked by Ellie Bruce and then batting out of bound by Alicia McDaniel
for Springfield.
So Hillsdale, we'll take the ball.
Yeah, you saw there two rebounds integral.
That was almost a minute-long possession.
for Springfield. They worked the ball around. They played slow. As opposed to what they've been doing,
they've been trying to move fast, worked the ball outside to those corners for that three, open three.
But there they moved the ball around. The one time they just tried to work inside, Ellie Bruce is there for
the block. Hillsdale is still dominating in the paint. A great defensive set there for Hillsdale
as Maddie Smith will check in for Mike Delana Solarski and Savannah Smith in for Ellie Bruce.
The three point shot is up from Emerulman. It's no goods. But Smith gets the rebound, sends it back out to
Alecanovicius and it's intercepted there by Allison Wheeler.
So Osterman will bring the ball up for Springfield.
Passes the ball to Wheeler on the right side.
She enters in close to Paula Strasletsky.
Shot is no good.
Once again, an offensive rebound to Springfield.
They swing the ball out to the corner for Julia Mingus.
But her shot is no good.
Hillsdale will take the ball now.
Smith brings the ball up, passes to Petrissik.
Petrissik inside reverses back out to the free throw line,
giving the ball to Savannah Smith.
and Smith hits the open jump shot from the free throw line.
Two points for Hillsdale.
Eight point advantage here, nearly halfway through the third quarter, 45, 37.
As Molly Knight will take the ball for Springfield against Sarah Aliccanavicious.
Nothing going there.
She reverses the ball back to the other side.
It's batted away by Emma Rulman.
Springfield will keep possession.
Ball called out of bounds off of Rulman.
And once again, quick substitutions here.
Coach Burt for Springfield.
It looks like she'll be relying on the guard.
Liddy Blythe, Julia Mingus, Kennedy Osterman, and in the corner, Molly Knight.
And then her post right now will be Alandon Simmons, who's had some success in the post tonight.
Knight drives, shot clock runs low.
She reverses the ball.
Another corner to corner pass.
We saw that a lot in the first half.
Julia Mingus from the corner.
It's good.
45, 40 for Hillsdale.
Springfield, able to cash in three points on that possession.
Hillsdale will once again move the ball to Savannah Smith,
but guarded tightly by Alandon Simmons.
Hillsdale sends it back out to the perimeter.
Petrizzik will look to reset the offense.
Up with a hasty two-point shot,
hung in the air for Petrissik off the front rim and no good.
Ball is to Osterman, who pushes it up court.
Passes to Julia Mingus in the corner.
She penetrates with the right hand and looks to enter it to a Landon Simmons.
The foul is called on Hillsdale.
Looks like a hold on Maddie.
Smith. These last five possessions have been key for Springfield. It's a five point game again.
They're speeding that game back up. As opposed to those first couple possessions of the half,
they were slowing things down. Now they're speeding it back up. They're getting the corner to corner to corner,
in and out, and it's opening things up. Oh, ball is entered off the inbound pass to Paula Streletsky for
Springfield. She goes up with the two, but it looked like Sarah Alikenovicious there, took the charge.
and it was called.
So Hillsdale will take the ball
some smart defense there to post up
and take the hit for Hillsdale as
Maddie Smith passes to Annalise Petrusik
on the right side of the court.
Back to the top of the key to Emma Rulman
and to the left.
Maddie Smith.
Top of the key yet again, Sarah Alkenavish
has reversed right to Emma Rulman
and entered to Savannah Smith.
But Smith finds nothing, passes back out to Kayla Rice.
A pass intercepted by Kayla Rice
who takes the fast break layup.
It's no good.
by Streletsky but intercepted by Hillsdale and they look to put together a fast break of their own
Rulman decides against it passes the ball out to Maddie Smith and once again Hillsdale will
never mind Hillsdale will not set up the offense Patrizik looks for the drive
draws the double team passes out to Savannah Smith and Smith good for two for Hillsdale
the pass up from Bryn tabling check that the pass was from Julia Mingus up to Kayla Rice
and some smart defense there from Maddie Smith,
right up at half court, is able to bat the ball away
and take a fast break down.
It looked like she was fouled on the way up.
Well, you just mentioned that Hillstale did not set up their offense there.
I think they did.
You watched us both guards.
It was something different.
Savannah Smith is normally sitting there in that paint
and they're going to work it in her and then work something out from there.
Rather, you have Petrizzac pushing, pushing driving the lane.
Then you see Savannah Smith jump to the other side.
of the other side of the box jumping to the other box opening the lane for her as both guards on either side of the elbows are moving up leaving room bringing their defenders up savannah smith is drawing her defender out that leaves room for patricic to turn into that paint and get two points
deceptive play from petrissick puts hillsdale up seven we'll pause for a media timeout you're listening to hillsdale charger women's basketball on radio free hillsdale 101.7 fm
Number one, two and three.
And he's her.
Jayzer.
Thank you for playing in the basketball set.
Thank you for playing in the basketball set.
Back from the United States.
This is that to me.
Back from the media timeout, it's Hillsdale ball up 4740 in this season.
40 in this season opener against Illinois Springfield for the Hillsdale women's basketball team.
The ball is inbounded from Maddie Smith to Emma Rulman immediately enters it to Savannah Smith,
who's fouled on the ground. Hillsdale will inbound yet again from under the basket.
Smith passing in Rulman likely going to receive it as Hillsdale lines up looking like the exact same play just run.
In fact, this is different.
Three screens around the top or around the left elbow.
opens up Petrizzik for a long two, but the shot is no good.
Rebound goes to Kennedy Osterman in for Springfield.
The Springfield offense dig in their heels.
Osterman finding nothing around the top of the key, dribbles to the left corner.
Passes out right to Allison Wheeler.
She looks to penetrate with the right hand, crosses on Rulman, gets to the paint, but no further.
Back out to Osterman.
Osterman puts up the long two.
it's no good rebound to ruleman passes up to mattie smith smith with the right hand
enters to savannah smith and she is once again fouled again the springfield double when the
post catches the ball they've done it to ellie bruce they've done it to savannah smith
and they're getting called reaching too far for that ball hills deals just making good passes inside
good solid strong bounce passes savannah smith and ellie bruce really strong really strong
in the paint. They're grabbing that ball and they're trying to go up for shots and they're
getting them a lot of the time and they're getting that foul a lot of the time. That foul was called in
the air apparently so Savannah Smith will go to the free throw line. She makes her first and here's
the second. Also good. Once again, 86% free throw shooter there in Savannah Smith as she will check
out after a hard rotation for the Chargers. Excellent play as Ellie Bruce will step back in
and bringing up the ball for Springfield will be Bryn Tabling as she gives the ball
to Kennedy Osterman.
Osterman passes to
Julia Mingus, who penetrates with her left hand.
Back out to Osterman
on the left wing.
And right after that pass, it was Mingus
who doubled back to the left corner
some quick heads-up thinking for her
finding an open spot in that corner, and it's good.
So Hillsdale will bring the ball up.
49, 43 game, three minutes to play
in the third quarter as they look to enter in the post
yet again, some quick movement around the perimeter,
opened up Ellie Bruce's left hand for the entry pass and she was foul on the ground.
Hillsdale is getting that ball back inside.
Ellie Bruce does a great job of positioning herself right in between the defender and the goal
and opening up that big arm either side.
We got a great bounce pass just like I said that last possession.
It goes in just below the hands of the Springfield defender.
Ellie Bruce is able to grab onto that.
It's fouled there.
Five fouls on the quarter.
So Bruce will head to the line to shoot two as she makes the first.
and this is big in getting this ball into the post
Hillsdale has put Springfield in immediate foul trouble this quarter
and that's free points as Bruce Cash is in the second free throw
and bringing up the ball once again will be Bryn tabling for Springfield
she will give the ball to Osterman the two grad transfers for Springfield
passes intercepted tabling intended once again for Osterman
as they move the ball around the perimeter Hillsdale will take it
Emma Rulman to the left passes to Peyton Adkins at the top of the key
back to Rulman off the give and go.
She's open for a short two-pointer pass rims out and the foul.
It appears is called on Annalise Petrizik going for the rebound.
Springfield will take the ball and checking back in as Kayla Rice.
That's another thing Coach Olivia Bird is done for Springfield.
In the first half, you saw Kayla Rice and Kennedy Osterman on the court at the same time.
This is the first time they've been on the court together in this third quarter.
She's been subbing them in as the two sparks of this offense.
and she needs them going on and off for one another
and providing this offense some life
as Springfield looks to close this eight-point deficit.
51-43.
There will be Osterman at the top of the key.
Passes to Rice in the corner.
Rice gets open and puts up a two.
It's no good against Petrizzik.
Ball bounces out a long rebound
and a jump is called between what looked like
Annalise Petrissic and Allison Wheeler going for the rebound.
Ball goes to Hillsdale.
One of the weaknesses of the Springfield offense is that while they're running four players on the perimeter,
they're leaving one in the box, normally Alicia McDaniel,
but they're playing McDaniel on the opposite post from the person who has the ball.
So she's never close to the ball, and you're never going to get an inside pass directly from the ball handler.
So that leaves things, it doesn't leave many options as you're trying to drive
because you don't have much support, and then rebounding doesn't leave many options either,
just because the players on the opposite.
the side of the court. So it leaves the situation lack luster on offense unless you can really
trust those one-on-ones. And Hillsdale defense has been solid, not giving up opening drives.
Hillsdale has been playing lockdown defense, really solid man.
A great rotation for Hillsdale's young freshman guard, Maddie Smith, as Hillsdale turns the ball
over off of an errant patricic pass. Springfield takes the ball and they'll bring it up here.
Passes to Kayla Rice, who nearly, nearly drops the pass out.
of bounds against Sidney Panassick. She drives, penetrates, gets another open two-point shot from
close, but it's no good. Panasic with the rebound, passes up to Petrizik, and then back out to
Magdalena Solarski at the top of the key, reverses to Peyton Adkins, who looks to enter to
Ellie Bruce. Bruce guarded well. Adkins will settle, passing the ball out to Petrizzik, who
reverses it to the left corner for Sidney Panasik fires up in open three. It's no good. Rebound
goes to Kennedy Osterman, bringing the ball up for Springfield. She passes to Kayla Rice, who looks to enter
the pass to a wide open
Allison Wheeler, but that pass is batted away
from Sydney Panassick. Great awareness
there from Panassick.
Rice gets the ball back and is blocked
by Panasic attempting to go for the penetration,
which is something she's been able to do a lot
tonight, but not convert critically.
You've seen it time and time again.
Kayla Rice driving, but those shots
just won't fall for. No, that's
just like what I was saying. Their offense is
leaving open those one-on-one opportunities,
but she's not getting those opportunities because
Hillsdale is moving over, help defense, so
solid. She's getting contested
shots rather than open shots. It's led
to her not having anywhere near the game she's
normally having. Rice will check out
as the two young freshmen for
Springfield check in, Julia Mingus
and Molly Knight alongside Libby Blythe.
Blythe, open in the corner, puts up a
three and it's good. It's good.
A little hasty three pointer there, but
Springfield will take it. It's three points
as Solarski brings the ball up for Hillsdale,
looks for the immediate entry to Bruce,
and that's intercepted by a Landon
Simmons. Springfield has the ball now
down five chance to close this game to one bucket.
Osterman quickly moves the ball to the corner to Julia Mingus.
Mingus puts up the three and once again a three hit for Julia Mingus.
Deficit closes 51-49.
Hillsdale up to 40 seconds left to play in this third quarter and head coach Brianna Brennan
calls timeout for the charges.
We will take a time out with her as they talk this over and look to adjust to this new
springfield offense.

A 51-49 ball game with less than a minute to play here in the third quarter
as Hillsdale Women's Basketball looks to win their season opener here
against the University of Illinois Springfield.
Maddie Smith back in for the Chargers
as they'll get likely one possession left to close out this quarter,
hoping to open up this lead once again.
to two scores entering the fourth quarter.
It's Smith with the ball at the top of the key,
guarded closely by Mingus.
She enters the ball to Alecinovicious on the post.
Alicinovicious passes up a look back out to Smith
and doubles back to the perimeter.
Smith to Alicanavisius for the three.
It's no good.
Rebound goes to Kayla Rice for Springfield
as they will hold the ball for the last possession.
Osterman coming off the screen.
A hectic, a hectic last five seconds there.
Osterman looked like she lost the ball for a second coming off the screen.
It bounced around.
She corralled it, pivoted back off, put up a fadeaway shot,
falling to the right to try and tie the game 51-51 from the elbow.
No Hillsdale defenders were there.
The, probably the oddest set play we have seen tonight there at the end of the quarter.
No good.
It is 5149, Payton, as we enter the critical quarter.
of the game. It's going to come down to how
clutch these teams are going to be. Now he said
at half that this was
going to be a story of which
freshman or which young lineup
is going to start working first.
We've seen the experience
for both of these teams. Kayla Rice,
Kennedy Osterman, Bryn
Tabling for Springfield
and for Hillsdale, you've seen
Ellie Bruce and Savannah Smith put in
key minutes, Annalise Petrissic
leading the Chargers shooting
but these young lineups dueling
This is probably their first experience in clutch moments like this at the collegiate level,
certainly for Springfield with as many freshmen are on this team,
but certainly for Hillsdale with how long these young guards have sat behind
players like Lauren McDonald and Caitlin's playing with how well they were able to play Peyton.
How's this fourth quarter going to shape out between these two young teams?
Well, just when you thought, okay, Hillsdale's finally going to run away with it here.
They were up eight, nine points.
Then you see Springfield rush that offense again.
Their possessions were less than 10 seconds.
They're getting that ball down court.
They're getting it to the corner.
They're popping the three, and they're shooting really well.
You're seeing Libby Blythe shoot two of three from three.
You're seeing Mingus shooting three of six from three.
They combined for 15 points.
Both freshmen, this might be battle freshmen, just like you said.
And Springfield's really coming into their own right now.
And they see the open three-point shot in the corner.
Springfield has taken it as they will get the ball to start.
this fourth quarter. It's Blythe, Osterman, Rice, Mingus, and on the inside of Landon Simmons
against Hillsdale's, Patricic, Alecanovicious, Rulman, the freshman Maddie Smith, and the senior
Savannah Smith. A tough defensive possession from Hillsdale as Kayla Rice throws up a desperation
three while the shot clock is going down. And it's good, it's good. A very nice shot there from
Kayla Rice in the pressure moment.
And that is Springfield's first lead of the game.
It's 52 to 51 here as Hillsdale immediately moves the ball up the court.
Alecinovicious puts up a two as Springfield failed to get back on defense off the late bucket.
And she gets fouled and is sent to the line.
Springfield scored on three of their last five possessions, each of those being three
pointers.
That's nine points in the last roughly two minutes of game time.
they're bringing this game back hillsdale now takes the lead from both free throws 53 52
but they're playing springfield is playing the game they want to play right now fast motion 50% from
three a real weird end to the third quarter and the first possession of the fourth quarter continues
a pace hillsdale puts in 29 excellent seconds of defense only for kela rice to hit the three
and take the lead obviously alecinovicious takes it back as springfield gets the ball and mingis
once again steps out in the corner
that's her second turnover in the corner today
so Hillsdale will take the ball
when you're in the corner
not a lot of space between that three point line
and the out of bounds line
and Hillsdale will take advantage of it
they'll take anything they can get
because they enter the ball to Annalise Petrissic
the short guard as she puts up a fadeaway
it's good that's her first
hanging jumper of the day she loves
shooting those shots
this one is finally good for Petrissic
it'll roll in and Hillsdale
will go up three oesterman with the ball for springfield as they look to tie this game up once again
passes to mingis mingis on the right side to the right corner it's rice who dribbles back left to the top
of the key ball goes to liby blithe who puts up a three and nothing but air for liby blive
on the top of the key left as she will sub out for springfield the hillsdale student section loves it
Hillsdale's student section loves it. I mean, Hillsdale's in proper positioning on defense.
They're playing. Help man. They're doing exactly what they need.
But Springfield slowed their offense down. We just said it.
When they're having 10 second or less possessions, they're getting the open shot.
But when they're slowing things down, Hillsdale is always in position.
It didn't work out there.
The three ball is tending to fall for Springfield.
Hillsdale, seeing if they can respond with a three ball,
Alaconavicious is no good from the top of the key as Osterman is.
checked out for Springfield replaced by
Bryn tabling the other graduate

it is tabling
it is Wheeler
it is McDaniel

as well and yet again more fresh
legs for Hillsdale the shot is

from Springfield Hillsdale grabs
the rebound Maddie Smith
nearly loses her footing there
she looks okay as she passes the ball
to Annalise Petrissic.
Patricic drives, penetrates with the left hand.
Kayla Rice bites on the pump fake.
And Petrissic puts in the two-point shot,
an easy drive-and-score for Annalise Petrissic,
the senior leader of this Hillsdale team.
Springfield will take a timeout, down 57-52,
seven-and-a-half to play in the fourth quarter.

Back from the timeout, 5752, the Hillsdale women lead, the Springfield Prairie Stars,
and they come out in the press, a five-point lead with seven minutes to play.
Hillsdale looking out to close out, looking to close out this season opener.
Springfield breaks the press, Molly Knight penetrates and passes off to Alicia McDaniel,
Daniel misses, gets her own offensive rebound and puts it back in.
The Hillsdale Press failing spectacularly there, 57-54, an easy bucket for Springfield off the penetration.
As Hillsdale will bring it up, it's Annalise Petrizik yet again, controlling the ball on the right half of the court around the perimeter.
Enteres to Savannah Smith, who moves with her left hand to the paint, turns around just in front of the free throw line.
Another two-point jump shot for Savannah Smith.
It's good.
Hillsdale up 59 54 ball is to Osterman for Springfield she drives and it is blocked by
Sarah Alicanavicious an excellent penetration there from Osterman but a great response from
Alicanavish is getting beat off the dribble coming up a clean block it's out of bounds off
of Hillsdale Springfield will retain possession with 20 to shoot under seven minutes to play
Osterman catches the inbound pass Rulman bites on the three point fake Osterman
reverses the ball, but Springfield is unable to find the open man.
It's back out to Osterman at the top of the key against Savannah Smith.
A mismatch there.
She penetrates, but cannot put the shot in over the taller Smith.
The ball is up.
The rebound is contested, and a foul is called against Paula Streletsky for Springfield
a foul committed against Maddie Smith, the freshman guard for Hillsdale.
So it'll be Rulman.
Petrizik as Smith checks out Adkins.
Alikenavicious and Savannah Smith
an experienced lineup for this Hillsdale team
as we wind down here in the fourth quarter.
Smith with the ball entered into the post.
She attempts to reverse it out to Rulman in the left corner.
It's batted away by Springfield.
Hillsdale keeps possession of the ball,
inbounding from under the basket.
Hillsdale has a five-point lead right now.
59-54.
Springfield is trying to do what they can,
but their offense is playing reactive.
They're trying to work around.
around whatever Osterman is trying to do offensively.
When she drives, the offense is reacting to that.
When she pulls up to shoot, the offense is reacting to that.
Passes inbounded to Petrissik, an absolutely instrumental piece of Hillsdale's offense tonight.
She passes to Smith.
Smith with a jump shot from the elbow, it's no good.
Rebound to Springfield as they move the ball up to Kayla Rice, the big motor for this offense.
Passes out to Osterman to the corner.
It looks like that'll be Allison Wheeler driving for Springfield.
she gets open and is fouled check that that is not wheeler that is julia mingis the freshman
with some great three-point shots tonight some key moments for springfield mingis drives in
against the hillsdale double team puts up a shot she is fouled going to the line for two down five
five to play hillsdale played that defensive possession just as they wanted to they had three down
in the post you had ruleman you had petrizzik they're ready for that drive but you just fouled
what he didn't have to you don't need to be putting those hands
45 degree angle over the other player.
Just put them straight up.
You have the player just like you want them.
Play that defense just like you know you can.
It's clear that head coach Brianna Brennan for Hillsdale wants this experience team.
She does not want to test her freshman in a clutch moment right now.
So you've got Petrizzik, the junior.
You've got Adkins, the senior.
As Petrizzik puts in another contested two-point shot in the clutch for Hillsdale.
And you've got Alicanavicious, the sophomore.
As a foul is called, it looks like a foul is called against Hillsdale off the penetration from Kayla Rice as she was trying to pass the ball out.
And then obviously you've got Emma Rulman, the senior, Ellie Bruce, the sophomore.
All of these players have played in clutch moments before.
She's not testing the Solarski's, the sophomore guards, or at this point, Maddie Smith, the young freshman guard out of Alabama.
Springfield will take the ball.
They made their last free throw.
And then Hillsdale responded, obviously, with Petrissix Buggin, 61, 55.
The three-pointer is no good.
from Osterman. The rebound goes to Hillsdale. They run in transition, pass up to
Aliccanavicious. The right-handed layup is no good, but she is fouled on her way up, and she
will go to the line 4-2. A great response there from Hillsdale as Springfield came out. Once
again, looking to set pace, Hillsdale responds and hits Springfield where they're weakest.
Exactly. I mean, it's just, I think it's just like you said, head coach Biana Brennan has
those, has the players out right now who have the experience. They've been in these tough moments
before and they're ready to react to this fast-paced game with the more fast-paced.
They've been here before. They know what to do on offense. They know how to break the press
and they're doing the offense exactly what they want to do. We've gotten, we've had three points
in the last just couple minutes. There's the fourth.
Alicanavicious, once again, putting in both free throws as Hillsdale will once again
audible to a partial press. Kayla Rice breaks it for a springfield and moves it to the corner.
Osterman passes up the open three point shot, sends it back out to Rice. Rice with the open three
passes up, gets past Alicanavishas, penetrates, moves it out to the corner to Julia Mingus.
Mingus with the open three, misses, goes for her own rebound, and runs over Annelese Petrizzik
as Petriss looks slightly shaken up from that hit. The foul is called against Mingus. Petrizzik
taken charge here in this fourth quarter for this Hillsdale team, and her shots have begun to fall.
Maddie Smith checks in for Hillsdale and throws a pass for Petrizzik that is not caught.
Turnover for Hillsdale.
There again, you see, freshman guard comes in, has not played in a game down to the wire at this point.
First collegiate game throws that pass out of bounds.
These are turnovers you can't have in the fourth quarter.
As Springfield enters the ball to Landon Simmons, she puts up a two guarded closely by Ellie Bruce.
And the foul is called.
A Healsdale student section does not like that foul call.
Springfield was able to work number 21, Lyndon Simmons, up to the high post,
and then half her wrap down in a one-on-one with Ellie Bruce.
Ellie Bruce didn't have a lot of help there, like we've seen out of Hillsdale this whole night so far.
And so she had ended up fouling.
Students' section didn't like the call.
The refs certainly did, though.
This is really the first action you've seen in the post for Springfield.
They've been relying on their guards.
A Landon Simmons able to hit both free throws.
Deficit closes to six.
Four minutes, 20 seconds left to play.
Maddie Smith in for the Chargers.
The freshman guard bringing the ball up.
Emma Rulman behind.
Petrizzik and Alecinovicious on the wings.
Petrizzik looks to enter the ball to Bruce, decides against it.
Passes back out to the top of the key to Emma Rulman.
Rulman catches it and reverses quickly to Smith.
Alicanavisius in the left corner.
Back out, Patrissik, wide open at the top of the key.
For three, it's good.
Annalise Petris.
once again another clutch bucket from the junior
nine point lead for Hillsdale with under four minutes to play
with under four minutes to play Springfield
needs some scores here and they'll look to Kayla Rice
and Kennedy Osterman once again to try and get them a score
it's Julian Mingus with the ball at the top of the key passes back out to Libby
Blythe Osterman getting open around the edge puts up the three
No good. Airball called as the clock was winding down. Osterman had to put up a three with one second left on the shot clock.
Hillsdale student section loves an airball. Springfield will take the timeout with 3.30 left to play 66-57 for Hillsdale.
Payton, Hillsdale has broken 60 points. But before we talk about what that means for this team, we've got to take a break with the timeout.
You're listening to Hillsdale Women's Basketball on Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM.
Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.
I'm Lauren Smith, and this episode was requested by a grammar fan from Florida.
This episode, by the way, as you may have noticed, is free.
You're getting it for free.
Or are you?
The economist in me wants to say that it's not free.
It's zero cost, so there's one problem.
But the other problem, which is more relevant to grammar, is that free isn't a noun.
It's an adjective, meaning that it describes a noun.
And four is a preposition which must precede a noun.
So, for free is wrong because it's a preposition and not a noun.
This runs into all kinds of problems.
You want to say that you're listening to this episode for free,
so are you listening to this episode free or freely,
and does that even mean the same thing?
For Free is broadly accepted in modern English
and is even included in the Collins English Dictionary.
Personally, I think the distinction is interesting,
but I don't mind this expression at all.
That's your grammar minute.
And welcome back to Don Tibbitt's Potter Arena.
Inside three minutes here to play
in the Hillsdale Women's Basketball Season opener.
Maddie Smith brought the ball up for the Chargers,
gave it to Sarah Alicanavicious.
The ball was poked away by Kennedy Osterman for Springfield,
but came to Ellie Brewing.
Inside, Bruce put up the two, and Hillsdale expanded their lead to 11.
A double-digit lead here, three minutes to play.
Springfield misses another shot in close, and Sarah Alkenovicious gets past the defense.
Springfield, not able to get back in time.
The ball is lobbed way cross-court to Alicanavisius on the fast break.
It's in 70 to 57.
Payton, when this Hillsdale team breaks 60, they win the game.
We saw it all of last year.
We're seeing it here tonight.
they've turned it on here in the fourth quarter.
In their last 10, when Hillsdale breaks 60 points, they're 8 and 2.
When it is a high-scoring game, Hillsdale is going to find a way to win.
They just do.
They're maybe going to run away with it.
Even if it's close, Hillsdale is going to find a way to win.
Now, what was a five-point game just a minute and a half ago is a 13-point difference, 70 to 57 Hillsdale.
You've got to be scoring on every possession now if you're Springfield.
They will inbound the ball after it was batted out of bounds.
It will be Osterman and Rice, the two key role players, or two key starters for this Springfield team.
The pass is inbounded to Libby Blyze.
She puts up a two, felt a hand on her, and the foul is rightly called Blythe.
We'll go to the line to shoot two.
Down 13, Springfield needs these free throws to narrow this deficit.
Every possession they can get is critical here, and no doubt we will see the press, Peyton.
I think you are going to see the press here.
They need to pick up the pace.
They need to get points quickly.
And so they're going to try and force Hillsdale to make some quick and early mistakes.
Sure enough, Blythe misses the first, makes the second.
It looks like a soft press, but a press nonetheless.
Maddie Smith will bring the ball up for Hillsdale.
She's broken the press against Kayla Rice and entered the ball to Emma Rulman,
who sends it back out top of the key to Alika and Avisious.
Rulman then breaks to the left side.
And just outside the left corner is Emma Rulman for three.
It's good.
That should put the game away.
It is now a 15-point lead.
Hillsdale's largest lead of the night in the biggest moment.
Emma Rulman comes through the senior for Hillsdale.
Springfield needs a score right now.
Kayla Rice in the corner driving against Annalise Petrissic.
She penetrates.
She puts up a two.
It banks in a minute 37 left to play.
Springfield will take a very quick timeout.
Hayden, what a moment for this Hillsdale team.
the most experienced players at the biggest point in this game coming through and after a pretty
lackluster third quarter for Hillsdale the scoring just swells wide open that's experience emma ruleman
that was a contested three on that last possession she put it in without a second doubt she got that
ball she goes up it was in from the moment that left her hands she knew exactly what she was doing on that
field on that court petrizzic let's look at petrizzik for a second
She is 7 of 12 from the field, four of six from three points, shooting 67% there, six rebounds, five assists, three personal fouls.
She's getting down and dirty.
She's leading the team in rebounds and assists and points.
This is a Lauren McDonald-esque game.
Petrizzik, a key role player started plenty of games for Hillsdale last year, and you see it here.
Just a great performance, and then Emma Rulman knew she wanted to shoot that ball the minute she passed the ball out.
out to Alicanavicious.
Alicanavicious gave it back,
and Realman had created just enough space.
She put the three down,
and now with a minute and a half left to play,
Hillsdale breaks the Springfield Press.
The foul is called on Julia Mingus
against the freshman Maddie Smith,
who's shown herself very capable.
In this high pressure moment,
obviously her first collegiate game
looked very good at guard as Hillsdale will inbound the ball.
It's batted away by Kayla Rice,
So Hillsdale will inbound again, 73 to 60 right now.
No cause for alarm yet against this press for Hillsdale,
but you cannot turn the ball over.
The inbound passes to Petrizzik, who's beaten her defender.
Steps on the brakes and passes to Emma Rulman, left wing.
Rulman to the right wing, hands off to Maddie Smith, Smith to Petrissick,
back to the left wing, enters to Ellie Bruce.
Bruce, wide open for two.
It's good.
75 to 60 with a minute left.
to play hillsdale's lead is now insurmountable for this springfield team they'll look to make
shots nonetheless kennedy oesterman drives passes to aland simmons a landin simmons is fouled by ellie bruce
bruce does not like the call simmons will go to the line down 15 for springfield with 55 second to
play rice and oesterman moved the ball a lot on that last possession that opened the world for simmons
to just come down and ellie bruce had no other option kennedy oster's
has been the difference maker for the
Springfield team. She's kept them in this game.
She's hit clutch threes.
But her vision across the court
has been great. She's found the
freshman, Julia Mingus, Molly Knight,
and they've made shots when they've needed to.
So even though you're down
15 here for Springfield, as Simmons
misses the first free throw,
this is exactly the type of play
you want to see out of a lineup
that's almost entirely freshman.
Yeah, Osterman is
showing a poise that you really
need right now. Like I said, their offense has been very reactive. She has been establishing
the movement in the offense. She only has one turnover on the day. That's what you want to see
out of your transfer. Simmons makes the second free throw and the Hillsdale inbound pass
goes untouched. So Springfield will take the ball here, down 14, still 55 seconds to play.
There's no time has elapsed from the clock. And please note, there's only four fouls for
Springfield so far. So if they want to get into this and into this bonus and one error on their
fouls that they can get the ball back, they got to give up a few fouls early.
It's going to be interesting, no doubt. They're looking for a sure thing bucket right now.
They're not going to be looking for three-point shots specifically until likely we've seen
another 20 seconds go down. But you have to be looking for Osterman right now.
The passes to Allison Wheeler who gives the ball to Osterman, precious time elapsing from the
clock back to Wheeler. Wheeler with the left hand passes out to Kayla Rice.
Kayla Rice gets Savannah Smith the bite on the fake.
Tries to pass out to Osterman in the corner.
It's batted away by Sarah Alkenovicious,
who dribbles up the court and is fouled by Osterman.
The intentional fouls have begun for Springfield.
7561, Alikenovicious.
Very efficient from the free throw line tonight.
She will go there to shoot two.
Five fouls now for Springfield.
And Hillsdale will not contest the board.
Very confident in this 14-point lead with under 4.
40 left to play as Alikenovicious puts in the first free throw.
Alecinovicious poised right there.
We've been talking about experience being the marker of this Hillsdale team
in comparison with Springfield, only returning 3 of 13 from last season.
Alicavit just knew exactly what to do.
She slowed her game down once she had that steel.
She got across court.
And then they were forced to foul.
It takes her to the line.
She makes both free throws.
The entire defense collapsed on the drive,
which generally you don't want to see the full defense have to.
collapse, but Alikenovichitz was able to get a hand in there as Peyton Adkins will check in for
the Chargers. Springfield misses a three. Rulman brings the ball up for Hillsdale, but looks like she
put it off her own foot. 77 to 61, 30 seconds left to play in the game, and Osterman will bring
the ball up for Springfield. Hands off. Once again to Kayla Rice.
And a moving screen called on Allison Wheeler,
which should be the final play of this game
unless Springfield keeps the press up
or else this inbound and Hillsdale will dribble out the clock.
And it does look like Springfield has let up.
Rulman will inbound to Maddie Smith,
and the last 15 seconds of tonight's game will tick off the clock.
hillsdale didn't run a super fast-paced or super slow-paced offense here they really just adapted to the speed that springfield was giving to them and they made it work the experience played with whatever springfield wanted to do here in this fourth quarter but was a close game
hillsdale started to take the better opportunities to have less turnovers make the shots when you have them in the in the necessary moment when that was a four-point game five-point game
game. Hillsdale said, all right, this is our game. We are the better team and we're going to
come out here. We're going to shoot well. We're going to avoid those turnovers and we're going to
play the game how we need to play it. The final buzzer has sounded as Hillsdale will walk away with a
7 to 7 with a 77 61 win over the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars. Payton, I think I probably
have a good idea of who tonight's MVP is. But tell me anyway.
And why is it Annalise Petrizik?
It cannot be anyone but Annalise Petrizzik.
I mentioned it just a few minutes ago.
She's leading the team in rebounds and assists.
She has just been in points too.
She has led this offense.
Four three-pointers, seven total field goals made, 19 points.
She played the game just as she wanted to play.
She played Scrappy.
She had three personal fouls, not five personal fouls, not no personal fouls,
just enough to play Scrappy,
Just enough to have that energy for Hillsdale's offense and Hillsdale's defense.
What looks like it was going to be a slow start, she had two turnovers early in the first.
She slowed that down.
As much as she was getting the ball, only having two turnovers for the entire rest of the game after the first couple minutes, that's special.
That is that expertise that we've been talking about.
The experience came through for Hillsdale in the clutch moment.
It was Petrizzik and it was Emma Rulman, especially down the wire in that fourth.
quarter taking care of the ball, making clutch shots, and making sure that this young lineup between
Maddie Smith, between the Salarski twins, was able to slow the pace down and take care of the
ball. But don't overlook freshman Maddie Smith. This is her first game. She had four steals. She
was empowering this defense into something greater that led that offense to have better opportunities
to score late in that fourth quarter. With Kendall McCormick gone and graduated for this Hillsdale
team. Maddie Smith has definitely stepped up
in defense and Petrissac has stepped
up for McDonald and first plane offense.
You're going to need to see more out of
the guards as the season wears
on, but tonight, an excellent
showing for the Hillsdale
Chargers. Payton, give me a final thought.
I think Hillsdale
did solid in the first half.
They played the game kind of how they wanted
to play the game, but as they moved into the second
half, they did exactly what they
needed to do. They weren't trying to
make something happen, forcing any play.
They were just playing with the rhythm of the game.
If you needed to speed up, they were going to speed up.
If you needed to slow down, they were going to slow down.
If you needed to shoot that three, they're going to trust him a rulement.
They're going to trust Annelings Petrizek.
If you needed to get low, they're going to trust Savannah Smith.
They're going to trust Ellie Bruce.
It seems like this Hillsdale team has exactly what they need at every position if they want to utilize it.
It's going to take a lot of trust as the season goes on for this Hillsdale team,
forming up after losing three key starters from last year's lineup.
But they showed everything they needed to tonight.
A 16-point victory over Springfield.
They'll play Purdue Northwest tomorrow.
And then the Hillsdale men on Sunday will open up their season with a home game
against Saginaw Valley State.
I believe they play Saginaw Valley State tonight away as well.
So we hope you'll be tuning in as the Hillsdale Bowson.
Basketball season gets underway, both the men and women will be playing, and this weekend is the beginning of it all.
But tonight, Hillsdale 77, Springfield, 61, a 1-0 start for the women's basketball team.
And Payton, it was quite a game.
So, for Payton Hughes, I'm Lewis Thune from Dunn to its Potter Arena.
Good night to you.
We'll see you next time.
